HIS & HERS MAGAZINE

Welcome

to the high summer fashion issue, featuring four big style shoots showcasing His & Hers’ pick of this season’s key trends. Every month we scour the North West for the best locations for our fashion shoots, and we rarely have to travel far before inspiration strikes. However, when an opportunity arose to work with one of our favourite US fashion labels, Fashion Rocks, on a photoshoot on Hollywood Boulevard, we simply couldn’t resist a change of scenery! The result is our Americana-themed shoot (p35) and – just as exciting – a US launch party to celebrate this edition hitting the shelves. Please look out for breaking news and pictures from our American launch party on His & Hers’ Facebook and twitter accounts (www.facebook.com/HisandHersmagazine and HisAndHers_Mag) and, of course, in the next issue. We’re also very proud to bring you fashion inspiration from the UK, having teamed up with Harvey Nichols, Liverpool ONE, Cheshire Oaks and Weavers Door (within Cavern Walks) as well as Illamasqua and Jo Malone to bring you our must-buys for summer. And in case all of the above isn’t enough to raise a smile, our new health and fitness columnists from Pellaris are on a mission to up your heart-rate and get those endorphins going (on p39), and we’re also proud to feature City Yoga, one of the businesses His & Hers turns to when we want to look and feel better, on p38. Also, if you’re feeling lucky (or even if you’re not), we’ve done our best to tempt you with some of our biggest competitions to date, courtesy of the brilliant Stenna Line (p10), Malmaison (p30) and Illamasqua (p32). And you’ll also find a competition to win over £500 of teeth whitening at Tracey Bell on the His & Hers website: www.hisandhersmag.co.uk We’ll be back in September with more exclusive interviews, plus news, reviews, fashion shoots and competitions. See you next month.

STREET SMART This month, Hannah made it her mission to find out how you’ve been tackling the challenge of dressing for August’s variable weather. WORDS and PICTURES: Hannah ramsay

Emma, 26

Miss Selfridge Supervisor Emma’s vibrant H&M jacket injected a muchneeded splash of colour into a dull day! She paired it with a statement gold necklace, peplum top and classic denim jeans, all from Miss Selfridge and finished the look with black ankle boots, also from Miss Selfridge.

18

Emma, 25

Works in Topshop It’s all in the details in Emma’s pared-back look. The nude blazer and classic white tee can both be found in Topshop, while her pleated skirt was from Primark. The bowler hat and chunky jewellery give her look a cool, quirky twist, and she finishes it off with New Look boots.

George, 23

Hair and Makeup artist for TV George was beating the unpredictable British weather by layering a tea-party print blouse from owntherunway.co.uk with an on-trend fringed waistcoat and vintage beaded collar. Her jeans and studded shoes were from Topshop, and her bag from Selfridges.

Harriet, 18

Works in American Apparel I stopped Harriet on her way to work in American Apparel, and what a good job she is doing modelling the range! A sheer black blouse worn over Disco Shorts, both from American Apparel, longline white blazer from Zara and a coveted Mulberry bag make for a sharp monochrome look.

Hannah, 20

Hannah layered a classic Gap jumper over her floaty polka dot Topshop dress. Her tights and boots are from Urban Outfitters and the practical but stylish rucksack is from Topshop. The casual look is topped off perfectly with those beautiful Ralph Lauren sunnies.

Laura, 28

I loved Laura’s chic continental look, especially the Breton striped top which she picked up in a charity shop. The stylish cropped chinos and leather sandals were found in Zara and her timeless leather satchel was a fab find from Urban Outfitters.

We heart statement jewellery and Emma’s pink pearl necklace is a perfect example. We’ve found this lavish pearl and diamante version at Martine Wester. Necklace, £57, martinewester.com

Take a leaf out of Emma’s book and add a cute bowler hat to your look... We spotted this bad boy in the Debenhams sale, reduced from £18 to £5.40. Hat, £5.40, H! By Henry Holland at Debenhams When wearing a statement necklace, we’d suggest keeping your other accessories simple. We’ve opted for this chunky bangle similar to Emma’s. Bangle, £7.50, M&S

S teal her style We’ve picked the lovely Emma as this month’s high street stylista. We heart her simple choice of colour palette and clean-cut silhouette. WORDS: Hester brodie

Last year we were all rocking Topshop’s ‘Mighty’ boots. However, I think we’ve found the perfect replacement in these gorgeous Bertie numbers. Cowskin-style boots, £119, Bertie.

A loose fit basic tee should be a staple in every fashionista’s wardrobe. However, they don’t always have to be so basic. Add a little luxury to your day and invest in a silk version like this one from Topshop., Silk Tee, £60, Topshop Boutique

You can’t beat a classic pleated skirt like Emma’s Primark find. Although we couldn’t bring you her exact one, we have found this little gem from River Island. Leather look skirt, £25, River Island

A nude blazer is great for dressing up or down. Emma uses this gorgeous Topshop number to create a flattering shape when teamed with a loose fit tee. Blazer, £40, Topshop

19

women’s Fashion

Primarini comes up trumps again for a cheap holiday find. Try this floral bikini as your throw-away friend this summer - perfect for sea, sand... and foam parties! Floral bikini, £8, Primark.

Leopard print never goes out of fashion, but can be hard to get right. However, this little gem ticks all the boxes! With its smaller print, it’s definitely our goto leopard print for spring/summer 12. Leopard print bikini, £169, Melissa Odabash at the-editeur.com

Blue skies and white sandy beaches? Sounds like a dream, right? Well if this is what you’ve got planned then this is the perfect bikini to match your holiday! Blue and white floral top, £8, and bottoms, £6, Matalan.

Hester’s looks

It’s holiday season and we want to show you where to pick up the sexiest swimwear around. Style Editor Hester Brodie shares her pick of the best.

If you’re after something special with a bit more longevity we’d suggest dropping in to The Editeur in Chester (or take a look online) to check out this gorgeous black and orange number. Bikini, £158, Melissa Odabash at the-editeur.com

20

Here’s one for the surf chicks! The slightly thicker halter neck on this bikini gives a little more coverage for those planning more than just sunbathing. Reversible bikini top, £22, and bottoms, £18, Fat Face.

Whether you’re wearing a simple T-shirt or a bikini, you can never go wrong with a classic black and white stripe. This simple triangle shape bikini is ideal for a smaller bust. Striped bikini, £26, Topshop.

Emma McHarrie’s Entertainment News H

ello everyone! Hope you’re having a great summer? I thought I’d be rocking my wedges & flip flops by now but the lovely British weather has put paid to that – ah well, I shall still be taking some inspiration from this month’s holiday-inspired fashion shoot and living in the hope of some sunshine! All of the recent activity around the Jubilee & the Olympic Games is making me feel very patriotic, so whilst flicking through the Echo Arena What’s On leaflet I was pleased to see so many great British acts booked to perform, including Noel Gallagher, John Bishop, Cheryl, Madness, Olly Murs, George Michael and Jessie J – it’s definitely cool Britannia! Continuing my love of all things British, we have our first ever pantomime coming to The Waterfront Big Top at the Echo Arena this December. The heated Big Top tent will be erected on the King’s Dock site, adjacent to the BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena as part of a Christmas Family Festival extravaganza. Sleeping Beauty, one of the best-loved pantos of all time, opens here on 14th December with Corrie favourite Andrew Lancel playing the role of Carabose, the Wicked Wizard and Master of the Underworld, and with early bird savings until 15th October, what’s not to like? Whatever your age, make sure you get involved in the great British panto tradition! Right – that’s all from me for this month. Have a great summer and I’ll be back soon with my top tips for September. For more information visit www.echoarena.com

Scent essentials

Master Perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin shares his secrets with His & Hers words: Hannah RAMSAY

A

t His & Hers we love good perfume, even more so if it’s from luxury brand, Jo Malone London. It seemed only right then that we caught up with Fabrice Pellegrin, Master Perfumer and the name behind our favourite Jo Malone™ scents, to find out about his career in perfume and, of course, hear about his newest fragrance, Blackberry and Bay… What is your first fragrance memory? My father was a perfumer, so awareness of the smells around us has always played a big role in my life. One of my strongest memories from when I was little was walking past a famous perfume house in

28

Grasse on my way to school each day. I remember vividly the smells of earthy moss and sensual patchouli. To this day I still find these notes to be very comforting, transporting me back to my childhood days. When did you realise you wanted to be a perfumer? As a young child I dreamt of becoming a pilot. However, every summer whilst I was a student, I worked with my father in his perfume house, where I was responsible for receiving deliveries of raw materials from all over the world. It was a time of discovery, as I was introduced to new and different ornate natural aromas every day.

His&hers Beauty

I became fascinated by where they came from and how they were transformed from a raw ingredient into perfume; little by little my interest in perfumery grew and I was eventually completely drawn into the world of scent. Can you tell us about your new scent, Blackberry & Bay? The idea was born out of rambling, autumnal country walks in deepest autumn; of blackberry picking in overgrown English woodland. I have always wanted to create a fruity fragrance that captures the richness of red and black berries and so I embarked on this journey to create a scent that is full of juicy sweetness, bursting with the sparkling tartness of just ripe blackberries, while playing with the green, leafy earthiness of the bay accord. How would you describe the fragrance to wear? After the first spray you are instantly introduced to bright freshness from the vibrancy of the berries. The clean green note of crushed bay leaves gradually unfolds and combines with a light floral whisper, before you are taken into the deep, sensual woody base encompassing the cedarwood and vetiver. Which notes did you choose to include in Blackberry & Bay and why? There is a blend of blackcurrant, blackcurrant buds and bucco tree essence. The blackcurrant buds bring the fruity, juicy note to the fragrance but also an herbaceous accent which complements the bay. Bucco tree essence, which adds to the aromatic crunch of blackberry leaves, is quite bitter and is sweetened by a side of ripened blackcurrants. The bay accord

is based on natural galbanum, blended with ingredients to reproduce the natural freshness of rustling bay leaves. The bright essence of grapefruit adds emphasis to the juicy freshness of pressed bay. Some might say that bay seems an unusual ingredient to use in a fragrance; would you agree? Yes, definitely. Twenty years ago perfumers were using a lot of green accords in their creations and today we are seeing a comeback. However, modern green accords are far more complex thanks to recent advancements in technology. With the bay note I really wanted to reproduce the effect of fresh, crunchy and vegetal green bay leaves on the tree. Unlike dried bay used in cooking, the fresh bay embodies the vitality of living leaves. To produce this scent, you have used synthetic ingredients as well as natural essences; generally which do you prefer to work with? Naturals are not necessarily superior, although they do give a distinct identity to the fragrance. The natural ingredients live and evolve with the scent whereas synthetic notes add clarity and consistency. Each has advantages, and the blending of both often works best. What is the next challenge to look forward to in perfumery? It would be to develop the technology to extract natural essence from fruits. Today we know how to extract scent from flowers, plants, roots and even seeds but all fruit notes are still synthetically created. Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet’s

Workwear Focus His & Hers joins forces with Cheshire Oaks to bring you the latest expert advice on dressing for success.

L

ast month, Cheshire Oaks partnered with charity Dress For Success London to run a week long campaign with the aim of helping women back into the workplace. Activities included brand discounts on their workwear ranges such as Walford and M&S, goody bags and makeover tutorials and professional pop-up panels providing career consultations and expert style sessions with the aim of helping women thrive in work and in their personal lives. His & Hers asked Gabbie Cowely (Style Consultant at McArthurGlen’s Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet) to share her pick of summer’s most wearable workwear trends. For effortless work chic, team a light blouse from Reiss or Jaeger with a pair of sleek trousers in black or French navy. Finish the look with bold jewellery from Pilgrim Jewellery to inject a touch of personality. The high waisted pencil skirt is an

office staple, showing professional style with a feminine twist. Head to French Connection or Karen Millen for a variety of skirt lengths to suit any shape – a cut just below the knee is flattering for most. A fitted blazer is a work wardrobe must. Nicole Farhi and Hobbs have a great selection of tailored styles which work perfectly over a simple white shirt or stylish dress. Mix different textures and fabrics to create an instant lift to your outfit. Classic court shoes with a medium height heel are a top

choice for work. For all-day glamour, choose a pair in patent black leather or Middleton-worthy nude which will take you straight from the desk to dinner. Complete your look with smart accessories from Mulberry, Radley or Osprey London. A leather tote in a classic colour like black or cream will hold all your essentials and match any outfit, while a striking handbag in a bold, eye-catching colour will accentuate your workwear look. www.cheshireoaksdesigneroutlet.com

Investing in Your Wellbeing This month we introduce His & Hers’ new fitness experts who’ll be sharing their advice for healthy living every issue.

E

verything we do requires some form of investment whether it’s an investment in the form of time, energy and even money. We invest in our friends and family, clothes, work and pastimes. We should also invest our time, money and energy in ourselves - to become happier and healthier. Your body and health are your most valuable resources. Goods can be exchanged if they become faulty, we cannot! Sooner or later we’ll spend money on our healthcare, it all depends on whether we want to determine the circumstances or have them dictated to us. Would you rather invest in your wellbeing now, or pay to treat health problems in later life? Few of us want to contemplate spending later life in poor health, yet how many of us are doing something to prevent it? Let’s be clear, wellbeing is a lifestyle decision. If you don’t like how you feel at the moment, how do you really want to feel? We should be thinking about sustainability and our long term health, not being driven by vanity, current fads and fashion or hype. Despite the increasing trend for quick fix solutions and instant gratification, this is ultimately incompatible with our long term

health and vitality. Can you really see yourself carrying out that ‘extreme workout’ DVD or milkshake diet for the rest of your life? Your investments should leave you happier, healthier and more vital, and be compatible with your values and beliefs. No matter your level of expertise, some individual high quality training or coaching can make a difference. At Pellaris we pride ourselves on providing a comprehensive service that gives you everything you need to succeed. From strength and conditioning to Yoga, Pilates, injury rehabilitation and NLP, we can teach you how to invest in yourself. Email: info@pellaris.com www.pellaris.com #challengeyourself

Chris & Mark’s Beauty Secrets

Mark and Chris Johnson White share their impressive knowledge of beauty and hair-care in their regular column. This month it’s Chris and Mark’s take on British and American style.

H & H: Your own individual approach to style and fashion is different and perfectly reflects this month’s British versus American style theme. Who favours the British approach to style and design? Chris: I love British designers such as: Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Fred Perry and I really appreciate vintage. British design is often an understated look, underpinned by beautiful tailoring. The Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton) wears Alexander McQueen (as well as high street brands) and completes the look with a natural, seemingly effortless, hairstyle. This is achieved with long layering (or extensions) and depends on sheer shine, which can be achieved with L’Oreal Lumino gloss serum. The biggest demand in the salon right now is for hair extensions, which can be expertly applied using Microloops (pre-bonded), which are light and easy to place and produce a luxurious, long textured look. We’ve been delighted to welcome people coming from as far afield as Ireland. Keep it natural with Tracey Bell’s Age Perfecting pure crushed minerals makeup for luminous healthy skin. H & H: What would be your interpretation of American style and fashion?

Mark: I love the ‘preppy’ look from American designers, such as: Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, Tom Ford and True Religion. As a beautician, you can only get results if the tools (brushes and accessories) are tailored to achieve a professional finish, with high quality products and Tom Ford is a favourite of mine because of this: the whole range is awesome. Bobbi Brown and MAC are other brands that project that sleek, sophisticated look. There is a wilder side to American design: think Lady Gaga (who crosses over to embrace European Avant-garde). Harvey Nichols is coming to Liverpool and I’m excited about their Beauty Department and Boutique Stand, which will offer a memorable experience - state of the art facials and other treats. (H&H can confirm this in spades.) Chris & Mark celebrated the opening of their salon at the wonderful White Knight White Haus Launch at Tracey Bell and would like to thank: Martin from Mojito Bar, Bev from Dolphin Dance Studio, Indigo City, Unique Events, Bellini, and friends at Tracey Bell who helped to organise this event.

CHRIS AND MARK CAN BE CONTACTED ON: 0151 7097604. START YOUR HOLIDAY PLANNING AT THE SALON. 45

We Toast to the Roast

F

That perennial British classic, the Sunday roast, has become one of Malmaison’s best-sellers. His & Hers downed our kitchen utensils to find out why.

or several months, we’d been hearing very good things about Malmaison’s three-course Sunday roast. Friends who’d once boasted about their perfect roast potatoes, home-grown vegetables or way with goose fat were suddenly talking instead about lazy afternoons spent being waited on hand and foot at one of our favourite hotels. So was it finally time to put down our oven gloves to find out what all the fuss was about? We thought so! Upon arrival at Malmaison’s restaurant, we were ushered to our table amidst a quiet hum of conversation from our fellow diners. Our party couldn’t resist the classics when ordering starters, opting for a prawn cocktail (an old favourite which was given a pleasing modern twist with its chic contemporary presentation) and pâté on toast, which was also immaculately presented and so tasty that it was demolished in a flash. For mains, we chose the prime rib of beef and free range chicken, both of which were cooked to

46

perfection and served with all the trimmings. Unable to resist the temptation to load our plates with Yorkshire puddings, light and fluffy roast potatoes, seasonal veg and home-made gravy, we set aside any week-day worries about calorie counting to devour the best roast dinner we’d been served at a restaurant. After the indulgence of the first two courses, only the strongest made it through to the dessert course, opting for a delicious crème brûlée. As the atmosphere was warm and the service friendly, we were in no hurry to leave, so ended our meal with more wine and coffees. At just £15.95 per person for a three course dinner, we think this represents excellent value. For your chance to win a roast dinner at the Mal for six people, turn to p30.

His&hers dines out

The Best Cocktails in the City? This month, His & Hers’ quest to ferret out Liverpool’s finest cocktails found us propping up Hotel Indigo’s understated but immaculate bar and raising a glass to their talented mixologists.

U

ntil relatively recently, cocktail lovers were largely overlooked by most Liverpool bars (and bar staff), but over the past five years, this sad state of affairs has been addressed with a flurry of new cocktail bars opening. As a result, rather than being pathetically grateful to find someone willing to fix them a Bellini, cocktail drinkers can now choose from an array of bars with good word-of-mouth reviews. One of His & Hers’ favourites is Hotel Indigo’s main bar, where the efficient and knowledgeable bar staff are happy to rustle up any cocktail you request. The hotel prides itself on making up drinks to order, even

if they’re not on the cocktail menu. They’ll serve up the classics with a flourish, but the His & Hers team’s advice would be to try one of Indigo’s most famous cocktails, the Cotton Candy Martini (pictured). Don’t be fooled by the fact that the first thing to go into this drink is oh-so-innocent candy floss. Despite its apparent sweetness, this cocktail packs a punch, but with its clever blend of sweet and sophisticated flavours, chic appearance, plus, of course, the fact that it’s a delight to watch it being made, this is His & Hers’ first choice. And as to the question of whether it’s the best cocktail in the city, we suggest that you pay a visit to Hotel Indigo to decide for yourself! www.hotelindigoliverpool.co.uk

We seem to be going through each season every day recently but fear not, fashion followers, good weather is on its way! WORDS & pictures: Luke Trevaskis

Matteo, 28

Trainer As a trainer, it is evident that Matteo also knows his stuff in the style stakes. Teaching Liverpool a thing or two, Matteo wear an All Saints jumper with emerald green Jack Wills gilet and Zara bag. His Mangano pants reflect his inner Italian and his Prada shoes champion his heritage perfectly.

Martin, 24

Suit Specialist As a suit specialist by trade, it is no wonder that Martin instinctively knows what to wear with what. Spending most days in T M Lewin, it is no surprise that we have this brand to thank for his shirt, tie and pants combo. Martin has carefully paired the brand with a Nicole Farhi jacket and Paco Rabanne messenger bag.

Martin, 30

Revenue Manager As a revenue manager, Martin knows exactly how to make his figures add up and it is clear he knows where to spend his money at the end of each month. Opting for a simple yet sleek look, Martin pulls off the white-tee-and-jeans look perfectly, with shoes from Zara and a pair of black framed RayBans.

Paul, 28

Drama Teacher As a theatrical impresario, I would not expect anything less adaptable from Paul. Although casual, this look is a great top-and-pants combo that can be ideal for almost every situation. Dressed in River Island and Topman, I would recommend throwing on a cape next time to keep flying that dramatic flag!

Mark, 24

Online Marketer As a marketer by trade, it is no surprise that Mark knows exactly which features to promote. Going with a nautical Zara top, Mark’s Topman pants and Barcelona pumps work perfectly with his new Urban Outfitters bag. Accessories have been picked up on Mark’s travels around the world and his smart glasses come from Silverberg Opticians.

Bruno, 30

Restaurant Owner Bruno has recently brought a taste of Italy to Liverpool with his new restaurant, Bellini. In true Italian fashion, Bruno does not let his style slip and sports some of Europe’s leading menswear brands. Wearing a Daniele Alessandrini jacket and trousers, Bruno pairs his Emporio Armani shirt with Cesare Paciotti shoes. Amore!

Luke’s Looks

As we move past the high summer season (which seemed to encompass a combination of all weathers this year), no doubt many of us will be heading to the coast to catch those last rare glimpses of fleeting British sunshine or jetting off to warmer climes, sandier beaches and clearer oceans. One thing to remember this month is that while you may be on holiday, there is no excuse for your style to take a vacation, so keep up that outward fashion show and stay on par with my guide to beach style.
