Steps needed to open in Tennesseea coffee shop

If you are currently researching what the steps are to open a cafeteria in Tennessee, at Hispanos Emprendedores we have prepared a small guide so that you can successfully start your specialty business.

Starting a coffee shop can be challenging, especially since you often don’t know where to begin the process. For this reason, we advise you to investigate the niche and develop your concept, you can look into ideas such as bookstore-cafeteria, mobile coffee truck, coffee stand, etc.

Then develop and analyze your budget, write the business plan, and create an action plan. Keeping in mind that 90% of the United States consumes caffeine, there is room for more coffee shops. Tennessee ranks 41st for the number of coffee shops per capita, or less than one establishment for every 7,681 residents. This leaves a void of local coffee shops that must

be taken advantage of according to representatives of the Crimson Cup chain.

Remember that you will not only offer coffee, you should also include cake, other specialty drinks, and a cozy place to work, relax or socialize. Another important aspect to consider is that, although coffee consumption has increased, consumers have tended to buy online or through a mobile application. Furthermore, baristas are requesting to be unionized.

What are the start-up costs of a coffee shop?

These can vary according to the size and type of coffee shop you want to open. For a small kiosk, you will need about $5,000; an independent drive-thru can require between $80,000 and $200,000, while

3

a space with seats and tables requires more than $200,000 rent, personnel, taxes, equipment, and machines included.

The equipment must include a grinder, a drip coffee maker, and refrigeration, among others.

Meanwhile, the current expenses are for labor, which must be kept below 15% of sales, in addition to the public amenities and the cost of the goods that you are going to serve, for example, coffee, milk, syrups, cups, glasses, etc.

Besides the business plan and niche research, you must register your business with the Tennessee Secretary of State. Various state, city, or county departments have to give their permission for the cafeteria to operate.

For example, before signing a lease or buying a place, verify some points. First, contact the building inspectors of the city council for guidance on the property.

Make sure the wiring, plumbing, and physical structure meet the demands of a cafeteria. Likewise, if it is handicap accessible and if it complies with the health code.

is viable, choose a commercial structure. The most requested are the corporations and the Limited Liability Company (LLC) that separate the personal assets of the business.

Check name availability, appoint a registered agent, and file articles of incorporation. Next, apply for the Federal Tax Identification Number (EIN) at the IRS and register with the state collection department.

Obtain the business license according to the chosen business entity and the other licenses or permits required to operate in the sector. Among the requested is the food handler’s permit, which you can obtain in training centers endorsed by the state government. There are three essential steps, complete the course, pass the exam and make the payment for the card.

A food service license is required by the Tennessee Food Safety Law which states that the person in charge must have adequate training. It is also achieved through a government-assessed certification program. This is usually requested if the food you are serving is cooked on sight.

and the local tax rate depends on the county in which the cafeteria is located.

Likewise, it is mandatory to comply with the construction permit for operating within the city limits. It indicates that the business can operate within the chosen building if safe for employees and customers.

Approval from the county fire department and the county health department is required. Call local government offices for more information. Additionally, you have to take out liability insurance. This policy covers cases in which you or the company may be responsible for any damage caused. Find out if you need to apply for a signage permit in the city and if you want to create a certain ambiance in your premises by including music, you must apply for a music license.

The latter is a requirement of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), among other organizations linked to copyright. If you are going to sell beer, wine, or other liquor, you must obtain a license from the Tennessee Liquor Commission. Visit their website for more information on the requirements.

When you have all this information and you are sure that the business

Furthermore, there is the Department of Revenue sales and use tax license. It is charged on the sale at the time of purchase. The general state tax rate is 7%,

Although there are quite a few steps that must be taken to open a cafeteria, the statistics indicate that it is a solid business.

the Latino Student Help Center

---Under the motto, “where strangers become friends and friends become family,” the Austin Peay University’s Latino Community Resource Center’s main mission is to support this community during their academic training.

Latino students at The Latino Community Resource Center (LCRC) at Austin Peay University, located in Clarksville, Tennessee, have a space of support and guidance that aims to empower, retain and help them. It is directed by another member of the Hispanic community, Yanaraliz Barnes.

Yanaraliz told Hispanos Emprendedores that the center has been operating at the university for 17 years and that it was in 2019 when she became director and focused on giving it a new vision, going beyond the campus. She wanted them to put down

roots in the city of Clarksville and Nashville, and wherever they are needed.

What does the Resource Center offer the Latino community?

The work has not been easy, but with dedication, they have been able to “provide resources so that our Latino students can learn how to apply to college, how to stay in college, give them advice about careers, and access free tutoring. They provide other resources like mental health, being part of a club, and getting to know each other. Every year we have

9

a retreat in which we do activities, there is food and they get to know each other. The purpose is for them to realize that they are not alone,” narrated the young director.

Between 2021 and 2022 more than five thousand people visited during the two school semesters, “they keep coming because they are always received with a smile. That constant support has definitely caught on, students stay, graduate, and have their careers. Sometimes I am surprised at how quickly time passes, I see them from their first year of university and then in their last year, I am so proud of them and that makes me very happy,” confessed Yanaraliz.

Un espacio de apoyo y orientación que tiene como meta empoderarlos, retenerlos y ayudarlos.

Given the lack of knowledge about how to handle the scholarship application and fill out the federal aid application, the center begins its advice from this point together with the admissions office to provide these services in Spanish, but the advice does not stop there.

Cultural programs and free coffee

el centro ofrece gratis café todos los días, aparte los estudiantes pueden disponer de microondas, disponen de una nevera, un horno tostador, una sala y oficinas privadas estudiar.

“Every year we help them renew the financial aid application because for them it is challenging, it is a service that they always use. We also help register for classes and sign up for a new semester. Most of the time that is a big obstacle for them, for that reason we tend to focus on financial aid and class registration because we know that is where there are more problems,” he emphasized.

With a smile, Yanaraliz commented that the center offers free coffee every day, apart from that, students have access to a microwave, refrigerator, toaster oven, a room, and private offices to make calls or simply study. They have graphing calculators, computers, laptops, and a printer. They can rest between classes in an area equipped with a TV, comfortable seats, and board games.

They carry out cultural programs such as the celebration of Hispanic

Llevan a cabo programas culturales como por ejemplo la celebración de la herencia hispana entre otubre y noviembre, y otras actividades en las que todos puedan participar.

heritage between October and November, and other activities in which everyone can participate.

In addition, at its headquarters located on the first floor of the Morgan University Center in room 115, each month they implement various programs such as group mental health sessions, depending on the needs. Those that are permanent are the ones that help them incorporate themselves to student life.

The center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the university, “it is a

complete center, it has a place to eat, offices, and other resources.” She clarified that to enjoy most of the services you have to be a student.

Significant achievements

YYanaraliz maintained that the center completely changed its programming to support Latino students, but clarified that assistance is not only provided to this part of the population but that it is open to all. She did not hesitate to show her satisfaction and affirm that she is proud of everything that has been achieved, especially of, “the

presence we have now, people know that our center is here, we have expanded the community and been to many events, you can see the fruits.”

They receive help from various businesses, “if they are experts in a subject they can talk to students, the doors are open. We like to bring people from the community so they can expand their minds and see more of what’s here.”

They also grant a scholarship and for this reason they are constantly raising money to give it to the chosen student each semester

1111

who wins it with an essay and good grades. So those who can contribute will be welcome, “it would be great because, in the end, they help them.”

Laughing, she points out that she alone directs the center, but stressed that she relies on the students, “I have a graduate assistant and two student assistants who have been with me for a while. This is a labor of love. This is always full and we have close to 40 programs a year.”

Projects

Although they are few and the work is a lot, they always set goals. For now, the director wants to expand her work team, to have at least one other person who is full-time, “as we expand our team, we can expand our initiatives.”

She also aspires to have larger headquarters, “the place where we are sometimes feels small, Latinos are rowdy and we party, before you know it there are many of us and there isn’t enough space for everyone,” she said smiling.

At the same time, she plans to continue strengthening the relationship they have with the community and to count on a guaranteed scholarship because at present there is not enough to be awarded every year, she proclaimed with some concern.

Entrepreneur’s Log

Integration of the Hispanic community “Getting Clarksville’s Hispanics on board took a little time,” confessed Barnes. She realized that to connect with the Hispanic community of the city, she needed the performance of “emissaries” and from there came the ambassador program through which they included members of the group of Latinos who live in Clarksville.

“They help us connect to different businesses and places so that we can expand our support network,” said the director, who accepted that it was difficult at the beginning because there were many things to change, “but now I am very grateful for the support that I have. I can go to any business and they help me. We have definitely grown,” she said with certainty.

She announced that they will hold an event to guide people to opt for the benefits the university provides and it will be carried out thanks to the support of the community, “it has been very nice to see how we started and to see how we are now, that we are holding events.”

Top PROFITABLE BUSINESSES IN THE US IN 2022 (PART II)

Before taking the final step in your venture, we advise you to learn about the businesses that were most profitable in the US in 2022 part II.

Keeping our previous edition in mind, we continue with the list of profitable business ideas in North America in 2022. We close the year by evaluating these options and preparing for 2023.

We wrote about mass consumption products (food, drinks, etc.), accounting services, and health care (pharmacies, telemedicine, etc.) and we finished talking about the technology area, an area that grows and changes according to market innovation. Below are four more alternatives:

1-Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) must be dealt with separately. This market is projected to generate $190.61 billion by 2025. AI applications involving machine learning,

predictive analytics, and neural networks are growing every day.

There are several ways to participate in this business idea, for example, go for self-driving vehicles, robotic process automation, customer service, logistics, delivery, chatbots, and marketing, as well as data analysis, voice assistant, human resources, manufacturing, etc. Whoever decides to invest in this market niche must be prepared to adapt to the many changes it might bring.

2-Green Energy

President Biden plans to invest some $400 billion in clean energy over the next 10 years. This will boost support for green energy solutions, as the plan is to end harmful emissions by 2050.

15

The electric vehicle, solar panel, rainwater harvesting system, and wind generation businesses will benefit, as will the manufacturers of energy-smart appliances and technologies. Environmental initiatives that were left behind are expected to resurface and become profitable businesses by 2022.

The disadvantage is that it is a long-term bet. The return on the investment will be seen in a few years.

4-Cybersecurity

Another type of business that is profitable in the US is cybersecurity due to the accelerated digital transformation. The increasing number of data breaches is a threat that will remain regardless of the economic situation.

This year the global market for information security will reach $170.4 billion. It is possible to offer assistance in cloud security, network security, infrastructure protection, and endpoint security, among others. It is necessary to be

aware of the regulations, the type of existing threats, and the stiff competition.

To decide on which of the most profitable businesses is convenient for you to enter into or invest in, it is of upmost importance to understand the market environment and landscape. Similarly, it is important to understand your capabilities and consider the unexpected events that affect the industry and therefore your company.

Lean on different resources to collect the necessary data to ensure long-term success. If you can’t find the right guidance, Hispanos Emprendedores offers advice for entrepreneurs.

3-Real estate

Faced with a low mortgage interest rate, real estate investments are attractive at this time. It is feasible to buy a property with a loan and then resell or rent it for a profit. Another good idea is to invest in a real estate fund by acquiring a trust with partners willing to finance a project in this sector. Currently, being a real estate agent will be very useful.

The Forgiveness

I want you to join me in thinking about the topic of forgiveness and emotional healing. This is an issue that we all have to think about and handle. Every person is going to go through pain caused by someone around us, especially those who are called our friends. Perhaps in these moments, you yourself feel resentment, pain, disappointment due to wounds in your life that others have caused and forgiveness is the best solution for that pain. Forgiveness is defined as: disregarding the offense or fault committed against you; and release someone from an obligation or punishment. When we’ve been deeply hurt, we don’t want to free someone from the punishment they deserve or not take their offense against us into account, but forgiving is one of the most important parts of emotional healing and of healing ourselves

from the disease of resentment, which leads to emotional death. Spiritual and emotional health is essential for a long life, which we all want to have.

The Word of God tells us in Proverbs 17:9 “He who forgives an offense cultivates love; he who insists on the offense divides his friends”. Love nourishes our lives and also those around us. On the contrary, resentment is like a cancer that infects everything. So how can we come to forgive?

First is to know that forgiveness is for you, to root out what causes you pain and makes you sick. Second, when you forgive, you do what God does for us, He forgives us. If God can extend forgiveness from Himself to us, why can’t we extend forgiveness to others? Finally, to continue to live an

emotionally healthy life, you have to emotionally disconnect from other people, and the way you disconnect is through forgiveness. Forgiveness is for oneself and leads us to understand more of God’s love for us. Now God forgives, not for him, but for us. Wow! If God loves us that way and shows it to us through Jesus, as he tells us in John 3:16, what more can’t He do for us. Ask God to show you His love and you will see how your life changes. God bless you.
