LAS COFRADÍAS MEDIEVALES EN ESPAÑA MEDIEVAL CONFRATERNITIES IN SPAIN

Resumen En este artículo se analiza el primer censo general de cofradías medievales de España con 436 identificadas durante los años 1122-1521, la mitad de ellas ubicadas en Sevilla, Zaragoza y Valencia. En su mayoría son de los siglos XIV y XV y se conocen sus advocaciones, con un claro predominio de las cofradías de oficios. El estudio establece una interpretación general del movimiento confraternal hispano en perspectiva económica y política más allá de los aspectos religiosos y asistenciales. Abstract This paper presents an analysis of the first general census of the medieval confraternities in Spain. Four hundred and thirtysix confraternities are identified between the years 1122-1521; half of them are located in Seville, Zaragoza, and Valencia and the majority of these are from the 14th and 15th centuries. This analysis shows both their venerations along with the clear predominance of trade associations. This study establishes a general interpretation for the confraternal, Hispanic movement using economic and political parameters more than the religious and welfare aspects.
