Introduction to the Heroʼs Journey Graphic Story assignment: Students in the course Discovering a Historic Imagination started the school year discussing the concept of heroism in response to the summer reading text, A Snow in August by Pete Hamill. Students then crafted a graphic story while utilizing the archetype known as “the heroʼs journey.” This archetype, or pattern found in stories across cultures and throughout time, helped students to develop a story which expressed their views on what it means to be a hero while communicating their values. Many students remarked during their presentations of their graphic stories to the class that there are many examples of heroes in everyday life. Students created these projects using the application Comic Life on their laptops. Our school participates in the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI) program. Students were taught how to search for images that are distributed on the web as “free to use, share, or modify.” When students wanted to use images that did not meet this criteria, they were instructed to provide credit for the images appropriately either through a URL in a text box or by providing a Works Cited at the end of his or her project.
