Indiana: Where the buffalo roam
By Lisa Tiernan
You’re driving the back roads of Indiana, windows down, a summer breeze blowing. The air is thick with the scent of freshly turned farmland and the rich soil that produces endless fields of corn and soybeans. Suddenly, you spy a herd of buffalo grazing. Buffalo? Yes, buffalo, right here in Central Indiana, American bison to be exact, owned by rancher Carl VanMeter. When VanMeter moved to the area fifty years ago he knew that he wanted to start a ranch of some sort. “I have always been fascinated by exotic animals. My first thought was to own a herd of Musk Oxen, so I headed to Fairbanks, Alaska, where I visited with the experts, researching the advisability of bringing them here. They convinced me that the Arctic mammal would never survive the summer temperatures in Indiana.” Not to be deterred from the dream of owning his own ranch, VanMeter did some further research, and, taking his cue from the nearby town of Buffalo, Indiana, decided that the American bison, or buffalo, would be a great fit for his plans. The animal, once almost extinct, is thriving on small farms, and larger, publicly owned state and national parks across the U.S. Its numbers, down to 750 in 1890, had reached 360,000 in 2000. VanMeter began his ranch with 4 buffalothree females and a male, that came from Custer, South Dakota, and his herd has grown over the years to the 75 head which he owns today. “We sell every conceivable part, processing two animals a month. We provide meat to three health food stores, two restaurants, and we are licensed to sell frozen meat from the farm.” The bison are grass fed, which is their normal diet in the wild, and produce a high quality meat that is similar in taste to a good cut of beef. It is lower in fat and cholesterol, and higher in protein than beef. “It is a quality meat that is extremely lean. Because of its low fat content, it cooks much faster Page 6

than fattier meats, so it can be overcooked if you don’t recognize this, and set temperatures and cooking times accordingly,” said VanMeter. In addition to providing high quality meat, the buffalo ranch is a fun place for the family to visit, and if you’re lucky enough to catch him outside working, VanMeter will provide you with a rich history of the American bison, along with a tour of his office, which includes a wall covered with hundreds of signatures of folks who have visited the ranch from all across the USA. He is proud to point out that there are also signatures from visitors representing 29 different countries, including Brazil, Finland, Germany, Holland, and China. He has thank you cards and letters pinned to the wall from American soldiers who were gifted with jerky from his ranch, and several visitors to the ranch pinned currency from their nation onto his wall. “I didn’t want to have to paint it, so we just let our visitors take care of it with signatures,” VanMeter said with a grin. The best time of day for a guaranteed sighting is early morning, but with 75 head roaming freely, almost any time of the day is good for getting a glimpse of the stately animal grazing alongside the roadway. The ranch is located at 7095 E. 1000 N., Monticello. For more information, you may phone 574-278-7555.

Historic Delphi A central starting point for a visit is the Delphi Courthouse Square Historic District, named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. On the east side of the square at 109 S. Washington St., the Opera House Gallery holds a collection of local artists’ work, with special exhibitions throughout the year. The Gallery is currently closed as it and the next-door historic Opera House itself undergo extensive restoration work. But just about 1 1/2 blocks north and one block east at 118 N. Union St. is the Delphi Opera House 2., an annex to the Opera House Gallery, where art exhibits, performances and special classes are held.. Wabash River Trail The Wabash River runs 475 miles from Fort Wayne to Evansville, and has the longest stretch of undammed waterway this side of the Mississippi. The river is home to otters, eagles, herons and an abundance of fish. Through this region, a designated Wabash River Trail offers several places to put in and take out canoes, kayaks, and in some cases motor boats. Starting from France Park in Cass County, and ending in Lafayette in Tippecanoe County, there are at least eight access points. www.wabashriver.us/ access_points. Like fireflies and lemonade stands, drive-in movie theaters are a summer time phenomenon. The McLachlan family who have owned the theater since 2000, and kept up with all the modern technology, offer state of the art picture and sound to their drive-in fans. The comfortable and casual atmosphere lends itself to an experience that no home theater will ever replicate. Take time to enjoy the decades old tradition of taking the family to an outdoor theater and enjoy an evening of entertainment under the stars.

Continued from page 3 Indiana Beach provides entertainment for thrill seekers looking to experience roller coasters and water rides, along with a carnival-like atmosphere complete with corndogs, funnel cakes, lemonade shakeups, and any other delicious treat you can think of. If you’re looking for something a little more laid back, step back in time at the Lakeshore Drive-In and catch the latest movie, while enjoying a treat from the well-stocked concession stand. Whether relaxing at the Whyte Horse Winery, taking a dinner cruise on the Madam Carroll, playing a round of golf at the Pine View golf course, or checking out the cars at the downtown Cruise Ins, you will always find something to do in this community. With all of its modern-day amenities, Monticello clings tightly to the nostalgia of a gentler, simpler time, when you could walk down main-street and nod to your neighbor, or relax at the park with a picnic basket while the children play nearby. Welcome to our town. We know you will enjoy your stay in Monticello.

WHAT TO CATCH According to Indiana Department of Natural Resources Biologist Thomas Bacula, species of fish excellent to catch are walleye, catfish, white bass and hybrid striped bass and can be found below the Norway and Oakdale dams. Other fishing depends on the spot, when a fish species spawning season is and the amount of water going through the dam.
FISHING LICENSES
A fishing license can be obtained from the Twin Lakes Fish and Game – located at 1880 N. Francis St. – or online at http://www.in.gov/ai/ appfiles/dnr-license/. Annual license, $17; nonresident, $35; short-term licenses also available.
Bacula said the best tips for fishing depends upon what species one is fishing for. One good tip to catch a variety of fish is to “troll along drop offs with minnow-style baits.” Twin Lakes Fish and Game suggests going to local bait shops and asking what is biting and what people are using.

Cass County
The land where two rivers meet As your travels take you through the heart of north central Indiana you may find yourself in Cass County, where friends, family and two rivers meet. We hope you take the time to walk one of our scenic trails, shop Logan’s Landing (our downtown retail-shopping district) and take a turn on the Cass County Carousel, an original Dentzel Carousel, where you can grab for that brass ring. While visiting Cass County, discover the best that outdoor recreation has to offer at France Park. Swimming or scuba diving in the crystal clear water of a long ago abandoned stone quarry, hiking, biking or cross country skiing the 5-7 miles of wellmaintained trails, fishing in Lake Trimer, camping at one of the 200 modern or primitive campsites and the 18 hole Disc Golf course are some of the many activities available. Take a ride on Indiana’s second longest ZIP Line across the lake. Visit the Jerolaman-Long home built in 1853 that houses the Cass County Historical Society Museum. The museum is open February thru December and in January by request. George Winter, an early Indiana artist is represented along with various examples of fine arts and other treasurers. From Crooked Creek Horseback Riding Trails to US 24 Speedway with their modified midget races you will find plenty to keep you busy in Cass County. Cass County is home to two great wineries, The People’s Winery in downtown Logansport and Indian Trail Wines off of State Road 16 near Royal Center Indiana. In June you will want to attend Pioneer Days in Royal Center and the Med Flory Jazz and Blues Festival in downtown Logansport. July 4th is celebrated throughout the county but nothing beats the Twelve Mile 500 Lawnmower Races featuring Briggs and Stratton and other modified engines. August of course brings us to the Taste of Cass County in downtown Logansport along the banks of the Wabash River. Local food and beverage vendors sell samples from their menus and there is enter
tainment and an adult beverage tent. September is the month for Art on the Avenue. Along the banks of the Wabash at Little Turtle Waterway Plaza this juried art show and sale is highlighted with food and entertainment. Whether you are visiting friends, gathering with family or just wandering your way through north central Indiana; Visit Cass County. You might arrive as a visitor but you’ll leave as a friend.
