Welcome to Twin Lakes Wrapped up in the trappings of an ordinary “small town, USA, Monticello, Indiana has all the charm of a Matryoshka, or Russian nesting doll. As you explore the community, you discover exquisite treasures awaiting you around every turn, with one surprise leading to another. From the two lakes at each end of the town that explode with a wide variety of activities May through October, to the beautiful downtown area that offers unique shops, entertainment and dining, Monticello has perfected the art of living well, maximizing its natural and man-made resources for the pleasure of visitors and its hometown residents. With something for everyone, Monticello offers lodging for both the outdoor enthusiast and those looking for a little more pampering. Resorts and campgrounds abound, from rustic to all inclusive. The Best Western Brandywine Inn and Suites offers a luxurious conference center for special events and a state-of-the-art fitness center where you can push yourself with an intense workout in the gym, play a game of basketball on the high school regulation-size court, play

tennis or racquetball, or simply relax in the swimming pool, hot tub or sauna. Indiana Beach provides entertainment for thrill seekers looking to experience roller coasters and water rides, along with a carnival-like atmosphere complete with corndogs, funnel cakes, lemonade shakeups, and any other delicious treat you can think of. If you’re looking for something a little more laid back, step back in time at the Lakeshore Drive-In and catch the latest movie, while enjoying a treat from the well-stocked concession stand. Whether relaxing at the Whyte Horse Winery, taking a dinner cruise on the Madam Carroll, playing a round of golf at the Pine View golf course, or checking out the cars at the downtown Cruise Ins, you will always find something to do in this community. With all of its modern-day amenities, Monticello clings tightly to the nostalgia of a gentler, simpler time, when you could walk down main street and nod to your neighbor or relax at the park with a picnic basket while the children play nearby. Welcome to our town. We know you will enjoy your stay in Monticello.

The gem of White County One simply cannot talk about the Twin Lakes area without mentioning the famous gem of White County – Indiana Beach. Whether it is through commercials or word-of-mouth, for decades whole generations of families have spent their summers bonding over a trip to the amusement park, which has been a staple of the Monticello community for 91 years. Earl Spackman opened Indiana Beach, originally Ideal Beach, in 1926. Though the venture merely started as a place for locals to swim, in 1927, it added the excitement of a pair of toboggan slides and throughout the years built roller coaster rides, water park rides and much more. Indiana Beach was recently given a new breath of life through the purchase of the park by California-based company Apex Parks Group, who have spent countless hours and much funding in order to bring the beach back to the former glory and shine on the lakefront

that those who had visited it as children remember. According to Indiana Beach General Manager Scott Cooper, Apex Parks Group spent in excess of $2 million for capital projects around the park in the lead up to its May 26, 2017 opening this summer, with a focus on infrastructure. These projects include a new deck, new lighting packages, and a sticker package for the Scrambler ride at the park, at a cost of $36,000; infrastructure work on the wood coasters of the park, The Cornball Express, the Hoosier Hurricane and the Lost Coaster of Superstition Mountain, for a cost of $250,000; $60,000 on creating a new walkway to go to the entrance of the slides at the park; $50,000 to $60,000 on a complete refurbishing of the Tig’rr rollercoaster with a whole new deck, a new lift chain and a new entrance; bringing the railing in Kiddy Land up to ASDM standards; repainting the Sea

Dragon coaster and getting a new lighting package for the coaster and the Zero-G coaster; and the group has also done an extensive renovation on the Skyroom at a cost of $150,000. However, the renovations are not the only change to the Skyroom, and also the Roof Bar, this year, as the group has contracted a third party to oversee both areas of the park. “DT Kirby’s are going to be managing that for us this year,” Cooper said. “It’s one of those things where we just have a lot on our plate, and we really want to focus on the amusement, theme park experience, which is where our expertise is. It’s not so much in the sit-down, dining type environment. So that’s the kind of food we’ll be serving in the Skyroom this year.” The golf course at the campground has also been completely redone at a cost of $50,000. The park has also expanded its international program this year, with 145 people from eight different countries working at the park during the season. Apex has converted the hotel on the property into a dormitory in order to house international students at a cost of $50,000. It is the park’s hope that this will offset staffing issues that the park has seen in previous years. However, the biggest project of the park this year focused on accommodations at the park’s motel, which Apex spent $500,000 on. Cooper states that the process entailed “taking her right down to the studs and putting everything back

together.” “They’re all going to be high-end finishings, granite countertops, new fixtures, carpeting, a complete overhaul of the accommodations, and we’re going to be focusing on the penthouse suites. We have four penthouse suites, which are getting a total refurb. The beach clubs are getting a total refurb,” he said. Though there are many changes and renovations that have taken place at the park, there will also be many familiar aspects and faces, such as returning vendors Pronto Pup, the Taco Shoppe and Elephant Ears. However, one new business, John’s Bakery, has come on board to offer services to the campground and is housed in the building near the campground store.

“And they’re going to be focusing on early morning donuts, coffee, danishes and that type of thing, and then they’re going to convert into pizza at lunchtime and the evening. And I believe they’re going to be doing delivery within the campground. Because it’s one of those things where the pizza delivery truck is always at the front gate of the campground. So we’re going to try to get some real good pizza out there to the campers and so on,” he said. Indiana Beach opened for the season on May 26 this year, and those looking to learn more about the beach, including food options, lodging options and much more, may contact the beach via phone at 574-5834141 or visit their website at www.indianabeach.com. Keeping things ‘Kopacetic’

In the first quarter of 2017, residents of the region were given another reason to visit the city of Monticello and the Twin Lakes area: the Kopacetic Beer Factory. The factory, run by brew master Sean Manahan, offers craft beers of Manahan’s creation, along with other craft beers from breweries around thes state of Indiana. “The local people are definitely the most important to me, but we’re also such a tourist community,” Manahan said. “When we get people coming from out of the area and definitely out of the state, I want to be the location here close for those type of people to really showcase what we do in Indiana.” Manahan is no stranger to brewing different varieties of beer. The Twin Lakes High School graduate has been working at several different breweries over the past seven years, since graduating from Purdue University in 2010. “I went to Purdue initially for law school, because my dad is an attorney here locally. He’s in Delphi. I wanted to do that, but when I turned 21 and realized I could go into a liquor store and there was more than Coors Light, more than Bud Light, that really sparked some interest. So I really got reading into it. Right at that time, I graduated in 2010, People’s Brewing Company opened. So I went in there and was hassling them for a long time and finally got a job there,” Manahan said. He served as head brewer for People’s Brewing Company for three years before transferring to Flat12 Bierweks in Indianapolis and serving as brew master there for three and a half years. “For the past seven years that’s what I’ve been doing, is brewing. Page 8

People from all over the region lined the bar for a taste of what the factory had to offer at its soft opening on Feb. 25, 2017.

It’s kind of a very specific trade,” Manahan said. After leaving Flat12, Manahan joined the family business in Monticello, the Scoreboard, where he worked to keep local, Indiana beers on tap and introduce the community to a variety of craft beers. The Kopacetic Beer Factory, which opened in February 2017 and is located at 12195 N. US 421 in Monticello, not only offers the community and region craft brews thought up by Manahan and his friends at other craft breweries in Indiana, but it also allows visitors a chance to hop in on the process, by allowing them to create their own brews at the business that can be enjoyed in its side room. “It’s important to me to keep the community involved,” Manahan said. “Say you like hoppy beers, come in and brew a hoppy beer with me. I’ll show you the design part; we’ll go through and do the brewing and then you get to name it; and then I’ll have it on tap. We’ll be able

to have these private parties where people can taste the beer with their friends before I put it out to the public and just continuously doing that type of stuff…I think giving people that little push, that little more incentive to come in and try it, I think that’s going to go a long way. I also just like hanging out with people. So if I can brew beer and hang out with people, drink a couple beers, it’s win-win.” The business is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 9 p.m., Fridays from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 9 p.m. They also offer food from the Scoreboard restaurant, which is housed in the same building as the factory. For more information on Kopacetic Beer Factory, visit its website at www.kopaceticbeer.com, visit its Facebook page at facebook. com/KopaceticBeer/, give them a call at 574-808-3378 or email them at kopaceticbeer@gmail.com.

Around the Lakes WHAT TO CATCH According to Indiana Department of Natural Resources Biologist Thomas Bacula, species of fish excellent to catch are walleye, catfish, white bass and hybrid striped bass and can be found below the Norway and Oakdale dams. Other fishing depends on the spot, when a fish species spawning season is and the amount of water going through the dam.

FISHING LICENSES

A fishing license can be obtained from the Twin Lakes Fish and Game – located at 1880 N. Francis St. – or online at http://www.in.gov/ai/ appfiles/dnr-license/. Annual license, $17; nonresident, $35; short-term licenses also available.

Bacula said the best tips for fishing depends upon what species one is fishing for. One good tip to catch a variety of fish is to “troll along drop offs with minnow-style baits.” Twin Lakes Fish and Game suggests going to local bait shops and asking what is biting and what people are using.

Boating safety is a must when on the water By Joe Martino HJ Correspondent

Summertime means fun on the water for most of us. Be it fishing, skiing, tubing or just cruising and relaxing, many Hoosiers find being on the water a great way to relax and enjoy being outside. If you are one of them, then you have undoubtedly noticed that, just about regardless of any impoundment you are on in north-central Indiana, unless it is one with a horsepower or speed restriction that is, our waterways are generally quite congested. This is especially true on weekends and holidays. This doesn’t mean that you can’t spend an enjoyable day on the water, however. In fact, at times it can add to the fun as you make your way into certain coves or areas where many boats tie up to hang out. It does mean, however, that you must stay vigilant at all times and practice both boater’s etiquette and common sense.

Come join us for Church SUNDAY SERVICES 8am Early Bird • 9am Contemporary • 10:30am Traditional More information: www.mccwired.com

For starters, remember the “rules of the road.” It’s that simple. Just as you would on the street, always drive on the right side of the lake. What if the lake is pretty empty? While that may give you a little more lee-way, it can get tricky when other boats do appear. When passing another boat, do so with as much space as possible between you and said boat while staying in a safe depth of water and without getting into other boat traffic. Reduce your speed if you need to in order to remain safe. This is especially true if you are passing, and there are other boats around. Likewise, slow down if another boat is passing you. This is safer for both of you. The faster you are going, the faster the other boat must go in order to get around you. For us fishermen in the group, never cut off another fisherman. I had this happen to me once during a tournament – by another outdoor

writer nonetheless. We were fishing the bank heading north along the shoreline. Just as we were approaching the point that was our main reason for being there, the other guy and his partner cut right in front of our boat at a distance of only about fifty yards or so, dropped his trolling motor and began fishing the very point we were approaching. I was sure to inform him of his error, but not before he had already ruined the spot for us, along with my mood for the day. Always keep an eye out when motoring past docks or piers or along the shoreline. A lot of the time people will be fishing from them and will have lines cast out. Be sure to give them room and respect their right to fish. Remember, a boat is a motorized vehicle; therefore, operating one under the influence of alcohol is not only illegal, but not a safe choice either. If you choose to consume an alcoholic

beverage, that is fine, just be sure to have a designated driver. Lastly, avoid “road rage” while on the water. You are bound to encounter other boaters on occasion who either do not exhibit courtesy or respect the law, but losing your cool will only lead to problems. Enjoy the summer days out on the water of your local waterway, just be sure to drive defensively and follow the law and use common courtesy when you do.

Honoring local veterans with annual boat parade On Saturday, July 1, the 450-passenger Madam Carroll excursion boat will fill up with military veterans and again lead a line of over 100 patriotically-decorated boats on Lake Freeman in Monticello for the 13th annual Proud to be an American Patriotic Boat Parade to honor our military. The parade is open to all military veterans and the young men and women currently serving. This year, organizers will be honoring veterans of the Global War on Terrorism, serving from 1990 to the present. The veterans on the Madam Carroll will receive medals, a picture with Monticello Mayor Ken Houston, a commemorative letter from Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb and a box of Girl Scout cookies, with 350 boxes of Girl Scout cookies donated by Cutler Girl Scout Liz Brobst. During the boat parade, some 600 people will gather on the deck of the Sportsman Inn to watch a waterski exposition and the parade pass in review. Overhead, the five-member Hooligans precision flight demonstration team will thrill the crowds with five passes. The boat will dock at about 12:30 p.m. Then, it is on Page 16

to what this Independence Day weekend is all about in small town America. People will come to the Monticello City Park for the Celebration in the Park, where there will be live entertainment; the Indiana University Health LifeLine helicopter will land in the park; and the Jordan Manufacturing Cannonball Express will have free rides for everyone. Families may also enjoy free face painting for the kids. What could be better than free hot dogs, watermelon, ice cream, chips and free family games on this Independence Day weekend. Scholarships are also awarded to area high school students for an essay on Proud to be an American. Monticello Mayor Ken Houston said it best: “This is the only event of its kind in the state of Indiana. What makes this event even more spectacular is the simple fact that everything is free. Corporate donors underwrite all expense and provide all food, games and entertainment to not only the veterans, but also for the general public as well. This event certainly speaks volumes about patriotism and American values.

Where the buffalo roam

For many within and outside of the community, White County has become well-known as the place where the buffalo roam. This growing reputation can be credited to Zona and Carl Van Meter and their longstanding Buffalo Ranch. The ranch started in 1974 with the Van Meters, but not as a business. The couple purchased three heifers and a bull as a hobby; they figured their children could show them in 4-H, and Mr. Van Meter was interested in keeping exotic animals. But over the next few years, they discovered that the buffalo were wild, independent creatures and wouldn’t be too willing to be shown off at local fairs. In 1979, the Van Meters began selling buffalo meat, which has provided them with supplementary income well into their current retirement. “When (the buffalo) started reproducing, it got too expensive to be a hobby,” Mrs. Van Meter said. “We accidentally got into the meat business by butchering one of our animals, and a lot of people asked if they could buy some of the meat.” The Van Meters decided they needed to get into the meat business after their four buffalo quickly reproduced into 16. Forty-three years later, they are still in business with nearly 80 buffalo roaming their 150-acre ranch. “It’s just been growing and maintaining ever since,” Mrs. Van Meter said. While never their primary source of income, it took several years before she and her husband started turning a profit. Because buffalo don’t start reproducing until they’re a couple years old, they need to be cared for longer than other livestock used for meat, Mrs. Van Meter said. But the upkeep is pretty simple Page 22

because the buffalo like to take care of themselves, she added. “You just let them graze and do their own thing,” she said. And they don’t particularly like being helped either, she noted. One year, on their wedding anniversary, Mr. Van Meter got too close and was struck by one of the buffalo, receiving heavy bruising and chest trauma. “That was a very painful lesson for him. You do not go out to the animals on foot,” she said. The Van Meters faced their first obstacle early on in the business, when they needed to switch from selfbutchering to taking the buffalo to a meat processing plant. “We had to go through a frustrating process with the state department, because when we first started butchering, we needed to do it ourselves,” Mrs. Van Meter said. She and her husband then spent the next two years filing with the state to use professional butchering facilities. But despite the challenges and initial expenses, Mrs. Van Meter enjoys raising buffalo and offering tours to the public. “You meet a lot of interesting people,” she said. “We’ve had people who have visited us from over 20

countries outside the United States.” The Van Meters got the idea for a hayride tour after being visited by a family from Chicago. Mrs. Van Meter doesn’t know how the family heard about their ranch, but her husband decided to give them a tour and show them the buffalo up close. When the family returned, the father told the Van Meters that many people from the city never get to see livestock and farmland, so they should consider giving tours. “We decided, ‘OK, let’s try it,’” Mrs. Van Meter said. They started the first tour about seven or eight years ago with about 40 visitors. And now hundreds of visitors come each year. She and her husband were born and bred in the Buffalo area, and both retired in 1996. She worked as a cosmetologist and travel agent, while her husband worked as a school administrator. Mrs. Van Meter encourages area residents to come out for a hayride and a meal because it’s a unique experience for many. “It’s not an ordinary thing. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be able to go out and sit in the middle of a buffalo herd,” she said.

Cass County fun

Much to ‘uncover, discover’ here

Outdoor recreation is in abundance in Cass County. Visitors and residents alike enjoy the outdoor recreational facility, France Park, for its scenic trails, waterfall, and clear swim lake with picturesque cliffs, quiet fishing areas, and spacious camping facilities. The 9 to 11 miles of trails are active all year long with hiking, mountain biking, and winter-time cross-country skiing. The swim lake is an abandoned spring-fed quarry that attracts SCUBA divers from across Indiana. France Park offers WI-FI and, to camping enthusiasts, both primitive camping and more modern camping with bathrooms, showers, water and electrical hook-ups. Park guests can enjoy fishing in the separate 17-acre lake filled with a variety of fish, including the popular Bass, Blue gill, and, Catfish. France Park has a challenging 18-hole disc golf course that cuts through a scenic, wooded section of the park. Visitors may want to take a ride across the Stone Quarry on the 1400-foot long Zip Line for a high flying good time. Little Turtle Waterway, River Bluff Trail, Eel River Run and the Panhandle Pathway offer over nine miles of paved and well-maintained walking/biking trails in Cass County. The Panhandle Pathway trail encompasses three counties with 9 miles of the trail running through Royal Center in the northwest part of Cass County and ending close to France Park. In 1987 our carousel, that was hand-carved 100 years earlier by artisan Gustav Dentzel and his crew, was named Cass County’s only National Historic Landmark. One National Park Service historian stated that, “The carousel is one of the oldest and rarest examples of its type.” It is housed in the McHale Complex at RiverPage 34

The zip line travels for 1,400 feet.

side Park. The most exciting part of the carousel ride is catching the brass ring. During each ride the shiny ring chute swings into place, filled with approximately 70 silver rings but only one brass ring. Each pass around, excited riders grab for the ring but it’s the luckiest rider that catches the brass ring and receives a token for a free ride. Cass County Tourism officials invite you to “Uncover and Discover” Cass County’s annual events, including The Twelve Mile 500, a unique day of racing, featuring riding lawn mowers with Briggs and Stratton and other modified engines and is held each July 4th. There is also the Taste of Cass County, which is held the second Saturday in August and welcomes visitors from across Indiana to sample food and drink from local eateries. Held at Little Turtle Waterway Plaza along the banks of the Wabash River, this festival brings food, fun and music to entire families. In September each year, Cass County celebrates the arts at Little Turtle Waterway Plaza in downtown Logansport with Art on the Avenue.

Wabash River Trail The Wabash River runs 475 miles from Fort Wayne to Evansville, and has the longest stretch of undammed waterway this side of the Mississippi. The river is home to otters, eagles, herons and an abundance of fish. Through this region, a designated Wabash River Trail offers several places to put in and take out canoes, kayaks, and in some cases motor boats. Starting from France Park in Cass County, and ending in Lafayette in Tippecanoe County, there are at least eight access points. www.wabashriver.us/ access_points.
