Talented Indians using guide to lead them

BY TRENT WRIGHT HJ Sports Correspondent

MONTICELLO — The 2018-19 version of the Twin Lakes boys basketball team has talent up-and-down its roster. Even with players who make other area coaches envious, long-time head coach Kent Adams is first coaching to areas of the game that take zero talent to execute. “Our goals are always the same — play hard, play smart and play together. Do the best you can with what you are working with and play to your potential each and every night,” Adams said. “That’s why we say there are 10 things that you can do that take zero talent or ability.” The items include being tough, don’t foul and always talk, to name a few. “We are working really hard on defensive fundamentals, being aware of situations and talking to each other on defense. We also want to be tough,” Adams said. “We want to establish a tough mindedness or mentality, even when things don’t go right. We have to be more physical, especially on the perimeter, than we were last year.” Twin Lakes is coming off a 15-11 record last season and starts its season on Nov. 20 against Winamac. “If you look at our schedule, we only have seven home games. We gave up a home game to go to Calumet the second game of the season to play at our sectional site because we wanted that experience,” Adams said. “Winamac has every single point and rebound back this season. So, that will be a tough test. It’s a great time of the year and I’m excited to get going.” Calumet New Tech ended the Indians’ season last year in the sectional final, ending Twin Lakes’ streak

Seniors Michaiah Galvin and Ethan Luzadder will lead this year’s Indians. “Things are going well so far. We have more experience back this season than we did last year, even though we are younger and only have two seniors in Ethan and Michaiah,” Adams said. Galvin and Luzadder, along with junior Jace Stoops, will be the Indians’ front line while juniors Dayton Minthorn, Colby Smock, Jadden Ousley and Brayden Houser will be perimeter options. “We kind of have two phase lineups. One that will have some size and bulk and the other that has a lot of quickness, athleticism and smaller, but hopefully can play fullcourt,” Adams said. “There are only seven juniors and

seniors. So, we are going have other players step up. That is what we are trying to determine right now. “We have seen some good things out of people, but we need to establish consistency from day-to-day because you, if get high on somebody one day, the next day you could be back to the drawing board. The good thing is, that the next day, they come back again. We are just trying to get that consistent effort and performance level,” Adams said. According to Adams, who enters is 23rd year at Twin Lakes and has gone 302-209 over that time, sophomore Noah Johnston has been one of the players that has impressed so far. “Noah has impressed us and opened our eyes. We have seen some improvement from him from last year to this sum-

mer and even this summer to now. The sophomore class had a great successful run last year. So, how will those guys step up and fit in,” Adams said. Sophomores Cade Baer, G a g e B u s i n g e r, L e w i s Dellinger and Kahari Jackson are also in the mix for minutes this season. “Cade Baer, at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, is a big kid. He’s improved by leaps and bounds. Even though you might think he isn’t quick, he has improved by light years ahead of where he was last year. He works at it and doesn’t stop short if he’s running and is the last one in a drill,” Adams said. “Freshmen Clayton Bridwell and Caden Harker are two guys that can fit in. We are going to

Girls Basketball

Despite low numbers, Indians have expectations BY TRENT WRIGHT HJ Sports Correspondent MONTICELLO — Twin Lakes girls basketball fans need to make sure they are on time for tip off this season. With nine girls on the squad, the Indians will only play a varsity schedule this season, but that doesn’t mean head coach Brad Bowsman is lowering expectations. “It’s a disappointment not to have our JV team. A month before the season, the call out numbers looked promising but, as the season approached, we had girls decide that basketball wasn’t something they wanted to put effort and time into,” Bowsman said. “I’ve told the girls that are playing that I’ve got the nine girls who want to play. We aren’t going to worry about anything else.” According to Bowsman, the smaller numbers will have its benefits. “It allows us to just focus on the varsity game and to have the entire staff prepare for that. “I know our younger girls have put a lot of time in on their games and it has to be in the back of the minds of the older girls because maybe they have seen the writing on the wall. I would hope it’s not. I would have hoped that those girls would have played and earned playing time. I really feel like our older girls realize that basketball wasn’t where their hearts were,” Bowsman said. “After the scrimmage (Oct. 30), the girls have seen a glimpse of what type of team we can be, but that was just a glimpse. “Our goal is win a sectional and compete in our conference. The regular season is practice for the goal of winning a sectional,” the Twin

There are really big shoes to fill when you have to make up 30-35 point per game along with the senior leadership. That will be difficult,” Bowsman said. The veteran Twin Lakes head coach stated that seniors Maggie Gutwein, Kayla Bennington, Sidney Myers and Camryn Mummer will need to start that process. “I think you would have to start with Maggie (Gutwein)

TWIN LAKES INDIANS Girls Swimming

Indians building for more successful state run

BY TRENT WRIGHT HJ Sports Correspondent

MONTICELLO — The Twin Lakes girls swimming and diving team is ready to build on last season’s highly successful campaign. The Indians advanced to the IHSAA State Finals in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays while McKenzie Vogel advanced in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. Emma Lamb, Ayanna Thompson, Amy Lyons and Vogel broke the school record in the freestyle relay and won the sectional title while Vogel also broke the school record in her two events. Vogel, Thompson and teammate Danielle D’Andrea return for the medley team. “We have very high expectations this year and we should be able to go to state again this year. We just need to switch some people around to fulfill our goals. We have lots of talent to fill those slots and succeed Amy Lyons, who graduated,” Twin Lakes head coach Beth Lyons said. According to Thompson, the trip to Indianapolis has helped motivate the returning Twin Lakes’ swimmers. “Our state experience last year pushes us swimmers to want to achieve that goal again this year. The state experience is such an amazing one, so truly knowing what it is like, it makes you want to put in all the work it takes to have the chance to go back,” Thompson said. Leading the pack will

She swims year around and has a very strong work ethic. She takes very little time during the year off,” Lyons said. “She is swimming for not only our high school, but swims in Lafayette. So when she isn’t swimming during the varsity season, she has practices before and after school. “She sets very high goals for

herself and works and works,” Lyons said about Vogel. Thompson also added that Vogel pushes her teammates to achieve more. “When I look at McKenzie’s work ethic and how driven she is, it not only inspires me, but it makes me want to put in that much more effort so I can support her as a teammate and fellow relay swimmer,” Thompson said. Lyons admitted that she would like more numbers on

her roster. “Our weakness is our numbers. I wish we had a few more girls to give us some more depth. There are always strokes that certain swimmers don’t have the experience or physically can’t swim,” Lyons said. “Those events are sometimes hard to fill all three lanes. Bigger teams will have a bigger pool of swimmers to draw from.” Lyons has high hopes for juniors Madi Miller and Abbi

Boys Swimming

Increase in roster has Indians filling every lane

BY TRENT WRIGHT HJ Sports Correspondent

MONTICELLO — In boys swimming and diving, the Indiana High School Athletic Association has 11 events. During a dual meet, teams can fill three lanes during each of those 11 events. That task was almost impossible for the Twin Lakes last season. The Indians finished the season with seven boys. But a growth spurt on the roster has TL head coach Beth Lyons smiling entering the upcoming season. “We have 18 boys this year!” Beth Lyons said. “I am super excited about the growth in numbers!” Second-year swimmers Jacob Scott and Blaine Lilly, along with newcomer Brock Deno, make up the team’s senior leadership. “We definitely have more depth, but not a lot of experience. Our most experienced swimmers are junior Cody Trahin and sophomore Hunter Bick,” Lyons said. “I’m

a number that Bowsman was impressed with. “Coming into the season and losing our top two scorers, I was worried about our scoring, but we scored 52 points in the scrimmage without Maggie. We were well-rounded and that’s a little surprising because that was more than we averaged last year,” Bowsman said. “We’ve told the girls that they have to stop looking around for other people to score — you have to

be that person.” Lane is another player that Twin Lakes will be counting on for good minutes. “She is a very hard worker and she is going to do the little things. She won’t let mistakes bother her, but instead makes it up with effort. Hopefully, we get our other girls playing that way,” Bowsman said. Falcons drawing from experience of late run

BY JEFF ARENZ HJ Sports Editor

CHALMERS — The Frontier Falcons would like to begin this season the way it ended a year ago. Frontier won six of its last nine games after a 2-14 start. The Falcons (8-17 overall) captured their first postseason victory in 15 years and played for a sectional title for the first time in 25 years, falling to Class 1A state runner-up Southwood on March 24. Frontier head coach Joe Smith said his team came together late. “We changed our offense a little bit and the kids bought into what we were trying to do at that point,” Smith said. “When we were 2-14, we were in a lot of those games. South Newton had a really good season, and we were down by 3 with about at the minute mark. We had a shot to tie that game, and it just rimmed out. There were a lot of other games that ended the same way. We were right there, but the ball didn’t bounce our way.” Smith said his players kept a positive attitude throughout the season. “Most important was the kid’s attitudes. They kept with it, didn’t give up and believed in themselves,” Smith said. “We kept talking about our end goal, and that was winning a sectional title. We talked about the journey, and getting there. They bought into that. “The kids were really excited about our sectional performance last year. We ran into a buzzsaw in Southwood, which played for a state title, but even though they handled

Our kids saw what type of a team Southwood is and it gave them a visual measuring stick entering this season. Now, we know what it takes.” Guards Cody Gutwein (14.1 points, 2.6 rebounds) and Colt McCracken (9.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.5 steals) were two Frontier starters who graduated last spring. “Cody shot the ball really well for us and Colt was just a winner with that kind of mentality,” Smith said. “We’re going to have to find someone who can shoot the ball for us.” The Falcons have three starters back, including guards Luke Bower (7.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.7

steals) and Jack Mikesell (5.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.6 steals) and forward Dilyn Cullum (7.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.7 steals). “I can see Luke and Jack stepping up in shooting rolls and Luke can drive the ball for us, and Dilyn does a lot of the little things for us,” Smith said. “Those three guys, we know about. It’s the other guys we need to find out about. When we made our run last year, there were five to six guys in our rotation, but we would like to go deeper than that.” According to Smith, Max Copas (1.0 points), Treven Girard (2.3 points, 2.9 rebounds), Coby Ingersoll and Cameron Mickle have impressed with their skills

during practice. Luke Blissett (1.4 points) and Carson Bell are post players who Smith is looking to develop. “It’s really going to be by committee as to who is going to step up and get those final two starting spots,” Smith said. “But I feel like we’re a lot farther along now compared to where we were at this point last year.” Smith said the Falcons’ attack is developing. “With our offense, we don’t have a true post player. We could stick guys like Dilyn Cullum, Luke Blissett, Carson Bell or Treven Girard down there on the block, but they’re better players when they’re facing the basket instead of having their backs to it,”

Teamwork has Falcons excited

CHALMERS — Without top scorer Katelyn Hall, the Frontier Falcons are looking to replace 50 percent of their scoring entering the 2018-19 season. Hall, who led White County by averaging 20.4 points per game, moved with her family to Florida last spring. Frontier produced 41.0 points a contest during a 4-18 campaign a year ago. Falcons head coach Minshen Ho said Hall accomplished a lot in her time at Frontier. “In three years here, Katelyn is our all-time second-leading scorer,” Ho said. “That tells you how much she can score. Had Katelyn stayed, she probably would have broken the school scoring record.” Ho said his team is working to improve its offense. “I have learned that our team is very coachable,” Ho said. “This is my third year with Frontier, and I have seen us make progress. We are farther ahead with mastering the fundamentals than when I began coaching here. And I’m looking forward to seeing more improvement.” Guard Kyra Wilson (6.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.8 steals) took a step forward in filling the role of being a top scorer. She had a team-high 15 points as the Falcons fell 43-37 in their season-opener at North Montgomery on Oct. 30. If Frontier fails to have a dominant scorer, Ho has another plan. “On some nights, we could have scoring by committee, but I was really proud of Kyra Wilson and the 15 points she scored,” Ho said. “We also had a plethora of players who scored four, six and eight points. My goal is to have players on the floor that can score about six points game. If you do the math with eight who can score six points that

That should be very competitive in most games.” Six-foot sophomore center Lily Martin stepped up with eight points against the Chargers after averaging 0.9 points a year ago. Freshman guard Emma Blissett came away with six points. Senior forward Cait Lewis, who averaged 3.5 points and 2.9 rebounds last season, had four points in Frontier’s first game. Not only are the Falcons seeking offensive options, they’re a team searching for an identity. “After losing our main scorer and a couple of other key components, we still trying to figure it out,” Ho said. “Our post players are not used to scoring in bunches. Our guards need to be comfortable with scoring on the drive, and our wings have to get comfortable with jump shooting. I believe in balance.” Breanna Hines (2.3 points, 4.0 rebounds) and Jenna Breedlove (2.2 points, 2.8 rebounds) graduated last

spring. In addition to Lewis and Martin, 5-10 sophomore center Lauren LaOrange (1.1 points, 3.1 rebounds), sophomore forward Schelby Clothier (1.0 points, 1.0 rebounds) and junior forward Myah Krintz, a state-qualifying cross country runner, will see time close to the basket. Krintz, who transferred from Harrison to Frontier, did not play basketball last season, but brings agility and quickness to the court. Aside from Wilson and Blissett, Ho has more options at guard, including juniors Emi Frier (4.6 points, 2.4 rebounds), Abbie Carter (2.4 points, 2.0 rebounds), Hannah Simmons (0.0 points, 0.2 rebounds), Maddie Matthew (0.0 points, 0.1 rebounds) and freshman Daisy Christopher. Like scoring, rebounding may have to come by committee, too. A defensive-minded coach, Ho believes his team can be See TEAMWORK, Page 6

Sipkema accepts challenge of molding Vikings

BY JEFF ARENZ HJ Sports Editor

FAS T FACTS: NORTH WHITE VIKINGS

MONON — North White went through a miserable 1-22 season a year ago. Now, the Vikings, under new head coach Matt Sipkema, are seeking to turn the corner in a new direction. Sipkema, in his first season as a head coach overall, succeeds Ron Best and wants to leave his mark on NWHS program. “My philosphy is to play solid man-to-man defense, sprinkling in a zone, occasionally. Offensively, I would like to spread the court and look to run,” Sipkema said. Forward Tyler Hook (4.9 points, 6.0 rebounds) was the only primary player who graduated last spring. Guard/ forward Ramiro Benitez, who averaged 8.5 points and 5.8 rebounds, played in just a handful of games before graduating. Sipkema has a decent group of players who are back in camp. Junior guard Cale Robertson (15.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.1 steals) was fourth-leading scorer in White County while having the ability to set up teammates last season. Senior guard Grant Buschman (9.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.4 steals) is another impact player in North White’s backcourt while junior center Trey Cobb (7.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.1 blocks) gives the Vikings a big presence inside. “Those are going to be my three key players, along with Colson Steinkamp and Tyler Orr, who were the main scorers on the junior varsity team last year,” Sipkema said. “We also have two freshman in Hunter Pogue and Bentley Buschman, who should be

This year, I can see him playing at the 1 through 4 spots on the floor.” At 6-foot-4 of tough muscle, it’s hard not to notice Cobb on the inside. “He’s a big body and he’s in the weight room five days a week. He loves the weight room,” Sipkema said of Cobb. “We’re looking for the same things that he gave us last year with a body that’s perfect for being a football tight end.” Grant Buschman serves the

Vikings in a dual role. “Grant is going to be one of our captains this year because he provides leadership, but he’s also our defensive stopper,” Sipkema said. “One of things were trying to do is to get the players to understand their roles this season. I told Grant, ‘I don’t need you to get me 15 or 16 points every night. Just give me 7 or 8 points, but stop the other team’s best player from scoring.” Pogue and Bentley Buschman are a pair of freshmen who are stepping into varsity roles. “It’s going to be Hunter’s job to distribute ball to more experienced players because he’s a great ballhandler,” Sipkema said. “Bentley, if he’s not starting, he’s going to be my sixth man because he can

also handle the ball.” Sipkema is a familiar face to most of the North White players after coaching the Vikings’ junior varsity team the last three seasons. “Since I have been teaching at North White, I’ve had most of the boys in class the last few years,” Sipkema said. “I know what these players want. I know that they are hungry. This is about making a fresh start for everybody. They have come to practice this first week, looking to carry that onto the court.” Sipkema knows an improved defense and a good team chemistry will go along way to help North White. “We have been dedicating 70 percent of our practices to improving our defense. But the strength of our team is the leadership of Grant

After Heimlich, Vikings still have experience

MONON — Despite the loss of point guard Maci Heimlich to graduation, North White is back with an experienced squad in 2018-19 after making another solid postseason run. The Vikings went 20-5 overall en route to an undefeated Midwest Conference championship, an IHSAA Class 1A sectional tournament title and an appearance in a regional championship game for the third straight year. Defending state champion Marquette Catholic ousted North White from the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Heimlich (17.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.2 steals, 2.0 blocks) was an important part of the Vikings’ success, leading them in every statistical category. But North White head coach Bryan Heimlich is confident his team can be successful again this year. Heading into his fifth season at the helm, Coach Heimlich has guided the Vikings to 80 win in 106 games.

and Olivia (Allen). Emma (Provancal) also played a little bit last year.” Seniors Rose (11.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.2 steals) and Valdizon (6.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.0 steals) and sophomore Allen (4.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 1.1 steals) figure to contribute significantly as guards. Provancal (1.8 points, 4.8 rebounds), a 5-foot-9 senior, hasn’t been a significant scorer but has asserted herself as a solid rebounder. “There is experience there, but the players this season know they’re going to have to fill some different roles,” Coach Heimlich said. “We’re going to try to do some different things, utilizing the roster that we have. We will see how that goes. “We like to share the ball in a motion offense, looking

for the best available shot. We encourage passing, but sometimes our girls almost overpass. But looking back, it’s been one of the strengths over the years.” Allen took on the role of a dominant scorer while producing a team-high 15 points in a 47-39 loss at North Miami, where North White began its season Nov. 3. Valdizon and Lynzi Heimlich, who finished with eight points apiece, supported the Vikings’ attack. Valdizon and Rose were the top rebounders for NWHS with seven and six, respectively. “It would be great to get consistent rebounding from our guards,” Coach Heimlich said. “I like the chemistry I have seen from Sara, Chandelle and Olivia in practice, and we can benefit from that if it can transition into our games.”

TRI-COUNTY CAVALIERS

Graduation has Cavaliers looking for scorers

BY HARLEY TOMLINSON Community Media Group

WOLCOTT — Tri-County coach Mark Gretencord knows there is no replacing talents like all-state guard Bennie Patterson or interior force Bryce Cook. Those two players — plus four other seniors who played instrumental roles — were key figures in last year’s stateranked 19-6 squad. Only a leg injury to Patterson late in the season kept the Cavaliers from cutting down nets at sectional for a second straight season last winter. The departure of seven seniors from last year’s team that reached a No. 2 ranking in Class 1A behind a 16-2 start means a major reduction of the team’s point total. The Cavaliers averaged 61 points per game a year ago, but lose nearly 50 points, including the scoring averages of Patterson (20.1) and Cook (15.7). The task facing Gretencord is finding a roster that can absorb much of that scoring this year. He thinks he’s found it with a lineup that includes seven seniors. “I think one of our strengths will be balanced scoring,” said Gretencord, who begins his second season. “We won’t have to rely on one, two guys to carry the load. We’ve got four or five guys who can put in 15 points a game every night. Our willingness to share the ball with be an asset.” At the forefront of TC’s balanced lineup is senior guard/ forward Kale Lawson, who started many games for the Cavs in 2017-18. A strong ballhandler, Lawson averaged 5.4 points and 3.1 rebounds

Lawson is coming off a superb football season in which he led the area in rushing touchdowns and gained over 1,000 yards. Also back is senior Sam Getz, who picked up his scoring in last year’s postseason in the wake of Patterson’s absence. Another role player last year, Getz will be asked to improve on his 7.0 points, 4.5 rebounds per game averages. “We will build around those guys because they have the most playing experience,” Gretencord said of Lawson and Getz, who was the area’s leading rusher. “Hopefully, they can bring along the other

guys.” Those other guys include seniors Luke Lehe, Chase Kirby, Hunter Musser, Jacob Flynn and Vidal Solorzano. Gretencord’s son, Zach, will also be counted on for quality minutes as a junior. “We’ve got scoring to catch up on and lots of leadership,” Gretencord said. “But I think we have guys ready to fill those roles.” Much of TC’s roster is filled with players who helped the junior varsity squad finish 18-4 last season. Gretencord said the richness in talent made for some exciting practice sessions last year. “These kids are ready,” he said. “They’ve had to go against guys like Bennie

Patterson, Bryce Cook, Logan Waibel last year. What better way to prepare them for varsity than to go against those guys every single day?” Gretencord’s JV and varsity roster will feature 24 players. He expects a handful of the younger players to fight for varsity time by the end of the season. One underclassman who will be counted on early is sophomore guard Jaedan Johnson, who will help the Cavaliers spread the floor with his perimeter shooting. The Cavaliers, however, lack a true big man, so rebounding is a concern for Gretencord, who likes his team’s ball-handling and scoring abilities.

Cavaliers seeking next step forward this season

BY JEFF ARENZ HJ Sports Editor

WOLCOTT — Tri-County has shown improvement over the course of head coach Missi Tyler’s tenure. When Tyler took over, the Cavaliers struggled through a 2-22 season in 2014-15. But Tri-County won six games a year later and preserved 10 victories in each of the last two campaigns. Now, TCHS is looking to continue its forward march. Tyler said she is looking for mental toughness from her players. “We need to be able to ride the storm in the tough games, when we hit some resistance and things aren’t going our way,” Tyler said. “We have to have the mentality that the game isn’t over and we will fight to the end. We need have the intensity to win those close fourth-quarter battles.” Tri-County will be without center/forward Grace Michal (13.8 points, 12.2 rebounds), forward Dakota Allison (8.4 points, 6.2 rebounds), guard Madison Bullington (5.7 points, 1.8 rebounds) and center Savahana Williams (2.8 points, 2.9 rebounds), all of whom graduated last spring. After losing 32.7 points and 23.1 rebounds from their roster, the Cavaliers are rethinking their strategy entering the 2018-19 season. “We’re trying some different things on offense, in addition to the basics and some of the things we have run before,” Tyler said. “Man-toman is still our go-to defense, but there are times when you have to go into a zone and other times when you have to do something different.” Speed and perimeter shooting look to be assets for Tri-County this season. “I feel like we are a quick, outside shooting team. What we lack in height, we pick up in hustle and we’re able to transition into getting up-anddown the floor,” Tyler said.

Head coach Missi Tyler, assistant coach Brian Tyler and assistant coach Paul Brooks are not pictured. “The things that we need to improve are rebounding and defense because I feel (to compete) that’s where it’s at. Offensively, we can find ways to score, but we’re going to have to limit opponents to one-shot opportunities per possession, get the rebound and hustle in transition.” Guard Kinzi Brooks (6.7 points, 3.0 rebounds), guard/ forward Odyssey Whitcomb (5.5 points, 3.1 rebounds) and forward Chloe Auxier (3.4 points, 2.5 rebounds) are expected to contribute heavily this season. “They are my three seniors who have played at the varsity level since they were freshmen. They bring an extra level of intensity for us,” Tyler said. Whitcomb (31.8 percent) and Brooks (28.7 percent)

Junior guard/forward Emma Michal, another returner for the Cavaliers, drained 26.3 percent of her shots behind the arc en route to averaging 3.8 points and 2.5 rebounds last season. At 5-foot-10, sophomore forward/center Myah Alberts, who saw limited varsity action in 2017-18, is Tri-County’s tallest player. She is back to give the Cavaliers a presence underneath the basket. With a roster of nine, Tyler knows healthy players are a key to this season. “We need to keep healthy because we don’t have the numbers,” Tyler said. “I have six varsity kids with some level of experience, and two of them are coming straight

successful by not allowing too many points. “I believe, to understand the game of basketball, it’s not just about winning. It’s also about learning the proper techniques, and manto-man (defensive) fundamentals are very important,” Ho said. “We caused more than 30 turnovers and allowed only 43 points in our first game this season.” Ho knows that, if the Falcons take advantage of the turnovers they force and keep opponents off the free-throw line. “We need to covert our steals and other turn-

overs that we create because that can lead to scoring points in transition,” Ho said. Ho is excited to watch the progress of his players, a group that he has been in his tenure at Frontier. “These juniors and Cait Lewis, our senior, have been with me since Day 1,” Ho said. “Even though the sophomores, like Lily Martin and Lauren LaOrange, have only been with me for a year, but I have seen tremendous growth in them. If everyone can contribute just a little bit, I think we can be successful as a team.” NOTE: Jeff Arenz can be contacted by calling (574) 583-5121 or by sending email to sports@thehj.com.

Twin Lakes Indians

Indians bring back mixture of experience, depth

BY JEFF ARENZ HJ Sports Editor

MONTICELLO — Twin Lakes graduated a few talented wrestlers last year, but returns for the 2018-19 season with a lineup full of depth. Semi-state qualifiers Kayvn Watts (25-14 at 120 pounds), Rhys Dodt (34-13 at 152), Jeremy Pugh (40-5 at 182), regional qualifier Tyler Lord (21-20 at 195) and sectional fifth-place finisher Jeremiah Bush (27-15 at 285) have moved forward after being seniors a year ago. Now, a mixture of experience and new competitors has Indians head coach Chris McWhirter optimistic this season. “I think we going to be a little bit different team. Last year, we were a little topheavy in that we had a lot of really tough seniors who won a lot of matches for us, but we didn’t have the depth that we’re going to have this year,” McWhirter said. “We probably won’t have one or two standout guys this year, but we could have 14 wrestlers who are super solid and win matches for us any weekend.” Three of the top four wrestlers on White County’s wins list hailed from Twin Lakes last season. Pugh led the county with 40 victories while Dodt was fourth with 34 wins. Senior Kaleb Cauble (36-12 at 160, regional qualifier), who ranked third in county victories, returns for the Indians. “If we have the numbers (on our roster), it leads to competition in our room. It leads to guys fighting for spots in our lineup,” McWhirter said of Twin Lakes’ depth. “I think early on this season, we could take our lumps because we are young. But with numbers we have, the guys will be battling, and I think we will see a sharp increase toward the end of the season, when it really counts

I look for him to win quite a few matches again this year,” McWhirter said of Cauble. “I think he has a chance to be a state qualifier, which should be everybody’s goal. We will have to see how he works. As far as being hard-nosed and working hard, he’s really going to help us a lot with that stuff.” McWhirter sees some untapped talent in second-year wrestler Zion Cosgray (20-16 at 126, sectional sixth-place finisher). “Zion was a brand-new wrestler last year after playing basketball before,” McWhirter said. “He’s super athletic and super quick. As well as he did

last year, the sky is the limit for him now because he’s going out there knowing what he’s doing. He’s strong and better equipped for the season as a whole. I think he may be a surprise to quite a few teams at the sectional and beyond.” Sophomore Ryan Denton (33-14 at 113, sectional runner-up, regional qualifier) made an immediate impact last season. “As a freshman, Ryan was great for us last year. I look for him to make another great big leap forward this year,” McWhirter said. “He does a great job on the mat by being technically sound. He’s one of our captains this year, which Ryan deserves. He works so hard every day and sets a good example for everybody else. I’m looking forward to watching him another year with more experience under

his belt.” Other Indians bringing back varsity experience include juniors Anthony Pulliam (1418 at 145, sectional fifth-place finisher) and Kaleb Roth (1420 at 170, sectional fifth-place finisher) and sophomores Ella McNulty (8-7 at 106) and Isaac Lashbrook (14-22 at 132, sectional fifth-place finisher). Other returners are senior Kolby Kellogg (182); juniors Dre Bottoms (145), Zach Kesling (195) and Dylan Farmer (145); sophomores Jonathon Rans (160), Horacio Flores (132), Wyatt Clevenger (220) and Jace Gochenour (152) New wrestlers include seniors Austin Phillipson (126) and Alex Cruz (145); juniors Wesley Kennington (182) and Jacob Milligan (160); sophomore Dailan Reece (138); and fresh-

I think we will be a little below that this year, but we still have a good turnout,” McWhirter said. “It looks like we’re going to be able to fill all of the weight classes … maybe not heavyweight … but have multiple people in each class. That’s a big, big deal in being a smaller school.” McWhirter said his team will be well-conditioned. “I think we will have great conditioning because our guys have worked hard so far this season. Tri-County Cavaliers

Cavaliers growing with incoming freshmen

BY JEFF ARENZ HJ Sports Editor

WOLCOTT — The TriCounty wrestling program is growing. In their third year on the varsity mat, the Cavaliers have six wrestlers, including three freshmen, on the roster this season. “I think we have several junior high wrestlers who are excited about competing in high school,” Tri-County head coach James Wamsley said. “I see our junior high program as a pipeline for us. “This is a tough sport, especially in high school. So we try to build the excitement at the junior high level, no matter if they win or lose. It doesn’t matter what their record is. My goal is to keep them excited about coming back the following year.” Wamsley said the stability of the junior high coaching staff has laid a foundation for future varsity wrestlers. “They’re being taught how to do things the same way by the same coaches in junior high,” said Wamsley, who also helps guide the junior high program. “I want to keep stability at both levels. That way all of the wresters have a direction of which way to go.”

Senior Drake Farrell (182) said Tri-County is trying to use a great work ethic to establish its program. “I think we need more guys to come out because we want to create a wrestling culture here. I think if we work hard

every day, people will see that and they will want to wrestle,” Farrell said. “All three of our freshmen have wrestled the last three years at the middle school level. So they have that experience to give us.” Junior Luke Ulrich returns along with Farrell while senior Ethan Lanoue (170) decided to try wrestling this season. Farrell has taken on a lead-

PREP WRESTLING North White Vikings

Vikings looking to overcome graduation losses

BY JEFF ARENZ HJ Sports Editor

FAS T FACTS: NORTH WHITE VIKINGS

MONON — North White enters the 2018-19 season without a good chunk of its varsity lineup. Vikings head coach Dennis Siburcrist is working to solidify spots in all 14 weight classes with wrestlers who competed primarily at the junior varsity level last year. “We lost a lot of seniors, so a lot of our experience isn’t varsity experience. Only time will tell on how we develop,” Siburcrist said. “We have to get them going, get them ready for the season. Our wrestlers feel like they’re ready but, as a coach, I would like them to be more ready.” North White graduated five wrestlers from last year’s 16-7 squad that won the Midwest Conference Tournament championship. That includes all-time wins leader Leevin Ball (39-4 at 145, sectional third-place finisher, regional runner-up, semi-state qualifier) who notched 145 victories as a Viking. Our technique needs to improve, too.” Siburcrist said North White is building for a late-season peak. “A good goal for this team is to win conference because that will give us momentum and confidence,” Siburcrist said. “I think that a young team, like this, needs that going into the sectional tournament. We have to go there thinking we can be competitive because we don’t have the hammers that we’ve had in the past.” NOTE: Jeff Arenz can be contacted by calling (574) 583-5121, by sending email to sports@thehj.com or by following him on Twitter, @jla74m.

CHALMERS — Colin Reagan, the first wrestler from Frontier to qualify for the IHSAA State Finals, made his way back to Indianapolis last February. Now, he’s a senior and returns to see if he can do it a third consecutive year this winter. “Coming from a small school, you’re really not expected to make it that far,” said Reagan, who compiled a 33-3 record at 106 pounds a year ago. “(In a single class state tournament series), you’re competing against a lot larger schools that have a lot of tough wrestlers on their rosters. “To be the first state qualifier from a school the size of Frontier, it shows other wrestlers from small schools that it’s possible to make it to state and it shows other people that we can be do it, too.” Falcons head coach Tony Metzger described Reagan as a high-energy, highly athletic kid. “Everyone in this room has seen how Colin has progressed in making it to the big tournaments. I think that creates more belief for everyone else,” Metzger said. “It gives people a belief that it’s possible.” Metzger said Reagan is a leader by example. His teammates have improved by

tournament,” Metzger said. “Pretty much everyone who has wrestled with Colin gets better.” Senior Caleb White (152), who transferred from Harrison and did not participate in varsity competition last season, has an opportunity to make an immediate impact, according to Metzger. “This will be Caleb’s first season here after competing in exhibition matches because he was wasn’t able to wrestle

at the varsity level,” Metzger said. “He had a bunch of impressive wins because I know he’s been wrestling for a long time. He’s my nephew, and he’s been around this sport a long time. He was about 4 or 5 when I was wrestling in high school.” Metzger sees White as someone who can mentor upper-weight wrestlers. “It’s hard for Colin to wrestle the big guys because he’s so small,” Metzger said. “Caleb is a middleweight guy who has been watching wrestling most of his life.
