It is a pleasure and privilege to welcome you to this performance at the 46th HKAF. This year, we take the notion of "what’s real to me" to celebrate the realities created through the artistry, creativity and thoughtfulness of our participating artists. Many works are informed by highly personal views, whether responding to some aspect of human experience as a matter of artistic motivation, or as a narrative device. Taken as a whole, I hope this Festival will provoke us to think about – and perhaps to question – our own understanding of what’s real. I hope that you will allow yourself to be immersed in the realities presented on stage at this and many other performances at the 46th HKAF, and enjoy the resulting co-created experience. I would also recommend the many PLUS performances and events that have been designed to enrich your Festival experience. Together with the entire team, I would like to thank you for your participation and support which sustains us in the mission to present a world class Arts Festival in, of and for Hong Kong.

Tisa Ho Executive Director, Hong Kong Arts Festival

of French musicians. This charismatic musician started learning cello at age 5 and played in some of the leading international youth orchestras during his meteoric rise to fame. Schubert, who was even younger than Mozart when he died at 31, is also represented on the programme with his youthfully charming Fifth Symphony. Also included on the Verbier programme is Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 4; the composer himself began his career as a young keyboard virtuoso, and his piano concertos are the living memories of his personality as a performer: No 4 was the last one

he himself played for audiences, before increasing deafness made performance impossible. Hong Kong’s own Rachel Cheung, 26, will be the soloist for this most poetic of the Beethoven concertos. Having started out as a remarkable prodigy, in 2017 she was Finalist and Audience Award winner at the 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Featuring youthful energy, freshness of vision, and classics that have stood the test of time: this concert promises to be rejuvenating for music lovers, no matter what their age. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Symphony No 35 in D major, K385, “Haffner” In 1776 Mozart was commissioned to write a serenade for the wedding of the daughter of Sigmund Haffner, a wealthy merchant in Salzburg, and what he produced left a lasting impression. When Haffner’s son (who was of a similar age to Mozart) received a noble title in 1782, the family desired more music from the same source for the ceremony. Mozart’s father Leopold (a friend of the Haffners) requested a new, celebratory serenade. The trouble was that Mozar t, by this time resettled in Vienna as a freelancer, was at the time overextended in his commitments and unable to fulfil this request with his usual lightning speed. He may even have missed the original deadline. Heightening the tension was the fact that Mozart was preparing for his own wedding to Constanze Weber in August – a match of which Leopold disapproved, causing considerable emotional pain for Wolfgang. The musicologist Neal Zaslaw speculates that Mozart possibly experienced a slight writer's block owing to “disaffection toward Salzburg and anger at his father.” Whatever feelings of resentment may have been involved, Mozart managed to keep them from affecting the musical content, instead, producing one of his most sparkling and ebullient orchestral works. For example, it opens with a unison leap of joy: a two-octave-spanning smile that sets the spirited Allegro in motion. Mozart remarked to his father that it “must be played with great fire.” The Andante entertains with urbane pleasures, perhaps nodding to Mozart’s new public in the big city, while the Minuet more clearly evokes the festive, unforced mirth of Mozart’s music for public celebrations from the Salzburg years.

As he completed each movement, Mozart sent what was ready to Leopold back in Salzburg – and then forgot about the project. The following spring, when he needed fresh material for one of the Vienna concerts, Mozart looked the score over again and made some revisions, such as adding flutes and clarinets to the ensemble for the outer movements. Writing to Leopold, Wolfgang remarked that “my new ‘Haffner’ symphony has positively amazed me, for I had forgotten every single note of it. It must surely produce a good effect.” Mozart’s prediction came true when the music was played at his Vienna concert in March 1783. A contemporary newspaper reported that among the “exceptionally large crowd” in attendance was the Emperor, who stayed for the whole concert “against his habit” and joined in “such unanimous applause as has never been heard here.” As a counterpart to the “great fire” of the first movement, Mozart asks for the finale to be played “as fast as possible.” The main theme is clearly a derivative of one of the hit tunes from his first great operatic success in Vienna, The Abduction from the Seraglio, but it foreshadows the spirit of another opera as well: the boisterous music of The Marriage of Figaro he would write four years later. Mozart seems to celebrate not only his Salzburg friends of old but the liberating prospects of his new life in Vienna, where he was just beginning to make his mark.

Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Concerto No 4 in G major, Op 58 In his first three piano concertos, Ludwig van Beethoven had fully absorbed what he could learn from Mozart’s model. The Piano Concerto No 4 (1805-06) strikes out into new territory – and, incidentally, represents Beethoven’s unintended farewell as a solo performer of his own concertos, since worsening deafness would make it impossible for him to premiere his fifth and last piano concerto (known in the English-speaking world by the nickname “Emperor”). The composer was the soloist for the world premiere of the Piano Concerto No 4 in 1808, as part of a marathon concert that incredibly also unveiled both his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, among other works. Taken as a whole, the Fourth Concerto is in a sense a meditation on the concerto idea itself. It’s as if Beethoven has taken a step back to reflect on untapped possibilities in this interplay between the one and the many. His opening gesture is the astonishingly simple one of having the pianist-asprotagonist launch a monologue of its own – before the orchestra has had a word. Embedded within the opening bars, with its illusion of an in-the-moment improvisation, is the energetic rhythmic motif that binds the movement together. This tension between the lyrical and the dynamic is a fundamental feature of the Fourth. The magical point of transfer when the similarly subdued orchestra takes over from the piano brings a luminous change of key, prolonging the aura of reverie and further signalling that much of the concerto’s drama will play out as new ways of presenting and staging the rapport between soloist and orchestra.

In an essay on the interpretive tradition that has long linked the Fourth Concerto’s enigmatic middle movement with the myth of Orpheus taming the Furies in the Underworld, musicologist Owen Jander declared that this “may well be the most totally programmatic piece of music – great art music – ever composed.” Beethoven organises this movement as a dramatic dialogue, with the (reduced) orchestral ensemble of strings playing the music associated with operatic recitative while the soloist plays soft, lyrical pleadings that Leon Plantinga, in his study of the Beethoven concertos, characterises as being presented “in nonresponse to the orchestra.” The result, he continues, is that “this movement joins many others among Beethoven’s instrumental works that conjure up the idea of voices and song and dramatic situation.” Eventually, “as the two forces contend, they come to inhabit the same musical universe.” The rondo finale contains the most straightforwardly extroverted music of the Fourth Concerto. The main theme pushes forward with an irresistible rhythmic charge, while the sonority of timpani and drums evokes the military sphere. Yet Beethoven continues to explore the implications of the contrast between the lyrical and the dynamic, so characteristic of this Concerto: a sweetly pensive second theme strays far from the battlefield spirit evoked by the call-toarms main theme. A shift to presto concludes the Concerto. Here, after the rethinking of concerto interplay that has prevailed, virtuosity re-emerges in a fresh light to bring down the final curtain.

Camille Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No 1 in A minor, Op 33 Camille Saint-Saëns, like Mozart, ranks among the greatest child prodigies in music history. For his first public recital in Paris, he performed piano concertos by Mozart and Beethoven, offering as an encore to play the audience’s choice of any of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas – by memory of course. He was 10 years old at the time and would live a long life spanning from the heyday of Romanticism through the birth pangs of Modernism and the trauma of the First World War. His most familiar compositions – including the Cello Concerto No 1 in A minor of 1872 – date from the 1870s and 1880s, when Saint-Saëns was at the peak of his fame. Like both Mozart and Beethoven, Saint-Saëns was a brilliant pianist and played an important role in introducing all five of Beethoven’s piano concertos to sceptical French audiences. He also composed and performed a cycle of five concertos of his own for the instrument. In spite of his later reputation as a fading relic, out of touch with early Modernism, Saint-Saëns did not simply parrot the Classical forms he inherited. The First Cello Concerto condenses the conventional concerto’s three-movement format into an organically compact single movement that mimics the impression of the expected fast-slowfast design. Moreover, Saint-Saëns here transcends the Romantic cliché of the solo protagonist as a hero in conflict with the orchestra. The composer instead generates drama by keeping the cellist at the centre of attention throughout much of the work, carefully integrating the solo instrument into the orchestral fabric.

The Concerto opens with a single orchestral chord before the cellist fixates our attention with an idea based on fast-flowing triplets – these come to a pause on a rising-then-falling semitone (a central motif of the piece). Although Saint-Saëns shows great ingenuity in developing his thematic ideas, he never does so at the expense of the immediacy of the music, giving us many beautiful surface details to enjoy. A lyrical interlude provides passage, through a change of tempo and key, to an enchanting middle section: muted strings supply a sweet minuet accompaniment for the cellist, who plays in the instrument’s high register and affably joins in the serenade. In a flash, agitated strings stage a return of the opening ideas. Once again, the cellist explores contrasting themes as the orchestra contributes its nuanced commentary. A new but subtly related theme is also introduced by the soloist into the proceedings. Saint-Saëns concludes the Concerto with a coda that steers the music from A minor to major and allows the cello more moments of glory.

Franz Schubert

Franz Schubert Symphony No 5 in B-flat major, D485 I n 1 8 1 5 , w h e n h e wa s o n l y 1 8 , S c hu b e r t experienced a tremendous outburst of creative energy. It would be his single most prolific year as a composer. Schubert’s unique genius had begun to emerge first and foremost in his songs – a development heralded by Gretchen am Spinnrade in 1814 – but by 1816 he was beginning to channel more of his creativity towards large-scale instrumental forms. In April 1816, Schubert completed his Symphony No 4, an impressive work in the key of C minor. While it demonstrates the looming presence of his older contemporary, Beethoven, Schubert’s original voice is unmistakeable. He was already at work on a new symphony less than half a year later: the Symphony No 5 in B-flat major – a work of blissful, spring-like freshness in contrast to the stormy emotionalism of the tragic Fourth (indeed, Schubert himself nicknamed the latter the “Tragic”). For his Fourth Symphony, Schubert employed his largest orchestra to date. The Fifth is of more chamber-like dimensions, limiting the orchestral palette by omitting clarinets, trumpets, and drums (Schubert even limits himself to one flute instead of the usual pair). The biographer Brian Newbould observes that the overall attitude of this work expresses a “nostalgia for pre-Beethoven symphonism.” In particular, Schubert’s intense love of Mozart is very apparent. Interestingly, Mozart’s great Symphony No 40 in G minor had provided some inspiration for Schubert’s previous symphony, and it does so as well here, though the two works – Schubert’s Symphonies 4 and 5 – are in a sense as opposite as night and day.

Schubert doesn’t worry about a slow introduction to prepare the way: the Fifth starts by merely taking a few “breaths” and then the sunny main theme sets sail, its ascending motion typical of this music’s light-hearted, optimistic spirit. That opening “breath” actually plays an important part as well, as the movement continues to play with these ideas. When we call this music “Mozartean,” what that really means, as Newbould describes it, is that “melody reigns supreme and one could sing [the movement] through from beginning to end.” The slow movement continues to radiate Schubert’s signature lyrical gift, but it also benefits from his original harmonic sensibility, with a modulation to a distant key and through the minor before the reprise of the main theme. The third movement is a study in Mozartean influence: anyone who knows the Symphony No 40 cannot help hearing echoes here of the parallel minuet in Mozart’s work. The choice of key itself is unusual for Schubert’s context (G minor), since this is a major-key symphony. The theme, however, comes from one of Schubert’s recent operas. For his final movement, Schubert recaptures the airy, cheerful spirits of the first movement – and its nostalgia for an already bygone age of Classical perfection. Programme notes by Thomas May

Cello

Gautier Capuçon is a true 21st century ambassador for the cello. Performing each season with many of the world’s foremost conductors and instrumentalists, he is also founder and leader of the “Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle” at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris – based in the stunning new Auditorium designed by Frank Gehry. He is acclaimed internationally for his deeply expressive musicianship and exuberant virtuosity, as well as for the glorious sonority of his 1701 Matteo Goffriller cello. A regular recital and chamber musician, Capuçon appears annually in the major halls and at festivals worldwide. Highlights this season include a return to Carnegie Hall (with Daniil Trifonov), an extensive international recital tour with duo partner Jérôme Ducros, supporting the international release of the album Intuition, and performances at Verbier Festival with Lisa Batiashvili, Christoph Eschenbach, Janine Jansen, Leonidas Kavakos, Yuja Wang and Tabea Zimmermann. Other artists with whom Capuçon regularly performs include Nicholas Angelich, Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, Frank Braley, Renaud Capuçon, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Menahem Pressler, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and the Artemis and Ebène quartets. As a concerto soloist, Capuçon continues to work regularly with conductors such as Charles Dutoit, Semyon Bychkov, Valery Gergiev, Gustavo Dudamel, Lionel Bringuier, Andris Nelsons, Christoph Eschenbach, Andrés Orozco-Estrada and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. In 2017/18 he appears with orchestras such as Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Wiener Philharmoniker, hrSinfonieorchester, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National du Lyon, London Philharmonia, Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, and the China National Center for the Performing Arts Orchestra.
