歷經五十餘年,香港藝術節已成為享譽國際的文化盛 事。今屆藝術節續放異彩,雲集約1,400名本地及海 外藝術家,帶來逾150場不同類型的表演,由音樂、 歌劇、戲曲,以至戲劇、舞蹈、跨媒體藝術和大型特 備節目等,必定是另一場令人難忘的藝術盛宴。
今屆藝術節以李察.史特勞斯的《拿索斯島的亞莉安 妮》揭開序幕,由巴伐利亞國立歌劇院獻上這齣莊諧 並重的精妙劇作,令人期待。個多月後,上海芭蕾舞
團將呈獻中國與法國聯合製作的《花樣年華》,作為 藝術節的閉幕表演。這齣精彩絕倫、中西協作的芭蕾 舞劇,正好反映香港獨特的中西創意文化根源,並彰 顯我們作為中外文化藝術交流中心的重要地位。今年 藝術節匯聚全球各地佳作,包括別具一格的「聚焦當 代阿拉伯」系列,更形豐富多采。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 52nd edition.
Over this past half century and more, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has grown into a celebrated international cultural event. This year promises to be another memorable Festival, featuring about 1,400 overseas and local artists in more than 150 performances across multiple genres, from music, opera and Chinese opera to theatre, dance, multi-arts and large-scale special events.
This year’s Festival opens with the Bayerische Staatsoper’s presentation of Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, a bravura mingling of high art and comedy. It closes, more than a month later, with the Sino-French coproduction of the Shanghai Ballet’s A Sigh of Love. This inspired East-West collaboration reflects Hong Kong’s singular East-West creative and cultural roots and our growing role as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. Indeed, this year’s Festival is rife with performances from all over the world, including a special Arab Arts Focus series.
I believe in Hong Kong’s creative promise, and my Government is determined to do all it can to encourage our local artists and ensure that they have the performance access they need and deserve. As I mentioned in my Policy Address, our newly established Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency will promote 60 industry missions, overseas exhibitions and other cultural showcases annually; a total of $4.3 billion will be injected into the Film Development Fund and the CreateSmart Initiative to support our film industry; and the Signature Performing Arts Programme Scheme will be launched to assist largescale, local performing arts productions and nurture the development of Hong Kong cultural brands internationally. The Government will continue to work hand in hand with relevant sectors to proactively promote the development of arts, culture and creative industries.

I warmly welcome you to the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival. Thank you for your staunch support, especially during and after the tumultuous period brought by the pandemic. With the Festival now back in full swing, we cherish this opportunity to come together once again and appreciate the arts with you. As we celebrate the Festival’s full-scale comeback and contemplate the development of the arts in this ever-changing environment, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has played a critical role in nurturing and sustaining the performing arts scene.
I would like to thank the HKSAR Government, acting through the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, which has graciously provided an annual subvention that serves as the bedrock of our ongoing efforts. 走過半世紀的香港藝術節,一直為國際與本地最優秀 的表演者搭建舞台,積極促進中外文化交流。經歷了 三年疫情的洗禮,藝術節終於在第52屆再度迎來「花 樣年華」,在全面復常的狀態下再度為本地觀眾與遊 客獻上今天和明日的經典,不單讓大家可以從眾多音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇、戲曲和多媒體作品中重新細賞遺世 瑰寶,更邀來多位重量級中外大師坐鎮,陣容鼎盛、 豐富多元,足以滿足不同觀眾群體的喜好。

For more than half a century, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has provided a stage for the most outstanding local and international performers, and actively enhanced cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. After three years of the pandemic, we are delighted to come back in full force and present to local audiences and overseas visitors treasured classics of today and tomorrow. Our programme features an eclectic lineup of music, dance, theatre, Chinese opera and multimedia productions, with a range of Chinese and international legends set to command the stage. With such a rich and diverse programme, there is something to delight everyone.
This year, our ongoing support for the development of local artists provides opportunities for them to flex their creative muscles through collaborations with leading artists from all over the world. At the same time, we also empower artists to innovate through the power of technology and create refreshing experiences for our audiences.

香港藝術節 於1973年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的 文化盛事,於每年2、3月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國 際藝術家的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育 活動,致力豐富香港的文化生活。
香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2023/24財政年度預 計收入(包括第52屆香港藝術節及2024年「無限亮」) 約港幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔 總收入約12%,另外約25%需來自票房收入,約48% 則須依賴來自各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊 助和捐款。預計餘下的約15%則來自其他收入,包括 政府針對捐款和贊助收入而提供的配對資助。

香港藝術節 積極與本地演藝人才合作,並致力為新進 藝術家提供展示才華的平台。藝術節至今委約及製 作逾250套本地全新創作,包括粵劇、戲劇、室內歌 劇、音樂和舞蹈作品,不少製作更已在香港及海外多 度重演。近年的藝術節新製作包括《飯戲攻心》踏台 版、《末戀 無愛合約》、《我們最快樂》、《鼠疫》、 《陪着你走》、《百花亭贈劍》、《香港家族》三部曲、
The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts, as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events, in February and March each year.
The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2023/24 (including the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2024 “No Limits” programme) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 12% of the Festival’s total income. Around 25% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 48% from sponsorship and donations by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching grant scheme, which matches income generated through private-sector sponsorship and donations.

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced more than 250 local productions across various genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include Table for Six on Stage, Loveless Romance, We Are Gay, The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

香港藝術節 多年來與知名海外藝術家及團體聯合製作 不少優秀作品,當中包括由香港藝術節、香港歌德學 院及翩娜.包殊烏珀塔爾舞蹈劇場聯合製作的《抹窗 人》、由倫敦老域劇院、布魯克林音樂學院與尼爾街 製作公司製作、香港藝術節為聯合委約機構之一的 「橫貫計劃」之《暴風雨》及《李察三世》、由香港 藝術節及上海國際藝術節聯合委約的《青蛇》、香港 藝術節與三藩市歌劇院聯合製作的《紅樓夢》、香港 藝術節與芬蘭國家歌劇院及芭蕾舞團聯合製作的《拉 娜》等。
香港藝術節 大力投資下一代的藝術教育。「青少年之 友」成立31年來,已為逾820,000位本地中學生及大專 生提供藝術體驗活動。藝術節近年亦開展多項針對大、 中、小學生的藝術教育活動,包括由國際及本地藝術家 主持的示範講座及工作坊、學生展演、演前講座、公開 彩排以及欣賞藝術節演出。同時,通過「學生票捐助計 劃」,藝術節每年提供約10,000張半價學生票。
香港藝術節每年主辦一系列多元化並深入社區的「加料 節目」,例如電影放映、示範講座、大師班、工作坊、 座談會、後台參觀、展覽、藝人談、文化導賞團等, 鼓勵觀眾與藝術家互動接觸。
香港藝術節亦銳意將共融藝術理念拓展到社區每一角 落。由藝術節與香港賽馬會慈善信託基金聯合呈獻 的「無限亮」計劃於2019年正式開展,透過一系列的 演出及多元的教育及社區外展節目,「無限亮」致力 創造共融空間,讓不同能力人士均可以一同欣賞、參 與、擁抱藝術。
為創造更穩健的財政環境以及確保藝術節的長期可持 續性, 香港藝術節基金會 於2022年成立,旨在讓藝術 節在未來進行年度預算以外的大型特別項目。

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer), co-produced by the HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch; Richard III and The Tempest, produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with the HKAF as a co-commissioning institution; Green Snake, co-commissioned with the Shanghai International Arts Festival; Dream of the Red Chamber, co-produced with the San Francisco Opera; and Laila, a co-production of the HKAF and the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.
The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. During the past 31 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached more than 820,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 halfprice student tickets each year.
The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions and guided cultural tours.
The HKAF actively promotes inclusion via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.
To provide greater financial security and long-term sustainability for the Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation was officially launched in 2022. Donations to the Foundation will be used towards enabling the Festival to present in the future large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for.

故事大綱 Synopsis
平凡的「留守少年」阿娟自幼體弱多病,終日 被人欺負,一天他遇上一位與他同名的少女。
少女對舞獅的熱情,為阿娟打開了夢想的大 門。阿娟聯同兩位好友組成雄獅小隊,拜入隱 世舞獅高手鹹魚強的門下,師徒四人一往無 前,日夜接受艱苦特訓,向着「全國醒獅大賽」 的目標昂然踏步。但當醒獅大賽日子漸近,阿 娟家中卻遭遇不幸……他會放棄一直追逐的夢 想,從此營營役役過日子,還是不顧一切拿着 獅頭一躍而上,與戰友並肩,在高樁上傲視群 獅,採青而歸?
Ah Kuen, a frail “left behind” teenage boy, has experienced a life of bullying. One day, he encounters a girl with the same name whose passion for lion dancing inspires him to learn the art form. He puts together a team with two close friends, and together, they strive to become protégés of reclusive lion dance master Salted-Fish Keung. As they work hard to prepare for the National Lion Dance Tournament, unfortunate events at home throw obstacles across Ah Kuen’s path. Can he let go of his dream and return to his mundane and purposeless life? Or can he bite the bullet, take a big leap forward with his friends, and dance all the way to the top as the fiercest lion of all?

《雄獅少年》的音樂設計上,最重要的成分是 醒獅的鼓聲,在傳統舞獅音樂中,它喚醒沉睡 的雄獅,在戲劇裏則喚醒失落的心靈。
主角阿娟是一個沒有生活方向的人,受了 鼓聲的啟蒙,便有了人生方向,大步向前。戲 裏的鼓樂從「傳統」變成「不傳統」,它會隨 着人心進化改變,從外在的源起,變為內心的
交湧,能快能慢,能輕能壯,甚至演化成像芭 蕾、現代舞及拉丁舞般的旖旎細緻,捕捉人性 的鬥志和初心。

The sound of the drum is undoubtedly the most important aspect in the music of I Am What I Am. In traditional lion dance music, the drum serves as an invocation to the sleeping lion. In the musical, it wakes up the dormant heart.
Ah Kuen, the main character, has led a rudderless existence until the magical power of the lion dance drum enters his life and propels him forward. As the story progresses, the drum music meanders from relatively traditional to unconventional, with nods to ballet, modern dance and flamenco music, all following the ever-changing course of the human heart Dream big, stay true.

作詞人的話 Lyricist’s Note
從來寫歌詞,尤其是音樂劇的歌詞,也跟寫 台詞無異,只是歌詞是嵌進旋律裏,稍為須 要在句子結構上做一點點增潤,令其韻味切 合旋律線條(或曰「句形」)而已。
提到寫台詞,我就想起老舍說的「連人 帶話一齊來」。戲劇台詞務必要角色一開口, 就令觀眾知道這個人從何而來,為何而生, 為何而去等等等等,哪怕只是一句短短的對 白也要能傳達這些信息。
音樂劇的歌詞,亦然。
廣州大劇院的同事說我為《雄獅少年》 寫的歌詞很「接地氣」,我猜意思大概就是指 歌詞裏的「生活氣息」夠濃厚吧。她們問我 怎樣寫到「接地氣」,突然間,我想到的就是 老舍先生的那句話。
就像《城市漫遊》這一首歌,一大群群 眾,究竟他們是甚麼人?普通話版和廣東話 版我都用了「社畜」一詞,就突顯他們是屬於 現代都市的上班族。又或者在普通話版的歌曲 《想入廢廢》裏,用「費玉清」和「費翔」兩 位姓「費」而不「廢」,來切入去罵某些人很 「廢」。兩位姓費的大咖今天依然家喻戶曉,里 巷皆聞,是很好用的社會語言素材,給三姑六 婆唱,最適合不過。
另外,《雄獅少年》是個勵志故事,同 時也勵志得很立體,就是不論電影原版還是 現在的音樂劇版,劇本都呈現了現實的艱難 和奮進。珍姐唱的《笑容》或許體現了這一 點。普通話版的歌詞「也許是生活不是《天 若有情》/柴米油鹽總是會打贏」和廣東話版 的「夢還夢可惜始終要計家用/咬實牙關手緊 不見鬆」就是最好的例子。前者用《天若有 情》來借代浪漫轟烈,後者用夢和家用的反 差講「面對現實」這四個字。
通常我寫歌詞,都會考慮歌唱的角色從 哪裏學到這些詞語,因為這可以用歌詞來側 寫角色。也許廣州大劇院的同事說歌詞「接 地氣」,是來自於此吧。
期待這批歌曲也接到各位觀眾的心裏。

Writing lyrics for musicals is the same as writing dialogue. The main difference is that it involves fitting words into the melodies, then adjusting the syntax to enhance the aesthetics and fully immerse the words in the music.
Whenever I write dialogue, I am reminded of Lao She’s quote “Bring the person along with the words” as a writing technique to describe the character’s life and personality traits. Even for a very short line, it needs to serve the purpose of telling the audience everything they need to know about the character: where they are from, why they are here, why they are leaving...
Lyrics in musicals work exactly the same way.
I once heard my colleagues at the Guangzhou Opera House describe my lyrics for I Am What I Am the Musical as “down to earth”. I guess they were referring to the rich and lively atmosphere presented in the lyrics. When they asked me how I managed to achieve this, I had nothing in mind except this quote by Lao She.
The song Wandering in the City explores the collective identity of crowds through its lyrics. In both the Putonghua and Cantonese versions, I used the term 社畜, which loosely means “corporate slaves” in Chinese to highlight how the crowd in a modern city is formed by office workers. Similarly, in the song A Desire to be Useless featured in the Putonghua version of the musical, I used the word 費 (pronounced “fei”) in the surnames of successful singers Fei Yu-ching and Fei Xiang mentioned in the song. A word with several meanings, 費 sounds the same as 廢, meaning “useless”. As a result, using this word becomes a witty and ironic play on words to comment on those who are “useless” in society. This also serves as a good sociolinguistic example, making the song a fun and easy tune that anyone can sing.
I Am What I Am the Musical is an inspiring story. Whether it’s the original film or the musical version, the story also solidly presents the harshness and challenging endeavours we experience in life. I also demonstrated this in the song Your Smile sung by Ah Chun. The Putonghua lyrics include the lines: “Perhaps life is not always A Moment of Romance / Fuel, rice, oil, salt will surely win”. A Moment of Romance (a renowned Hong Kong romantic film) symbolises the vigorous excitement of intimate relationships. On the other hand, the Cantonese lyrics “Dream on but we still need to count our household expenses / Hands are tied but our minds are not” uses “dream” and “household expense” as metaphors to explore what it means to face reality.
When I write lyrics, I usually consider where the characters pick up their vocabulary since using particular words can help build their personalities. Perhaps this is the reason why my colleagues at the Guangzhou Opera House thought my lyrics were “down to earth”.
I hope these songs can reach every one of you and strike a chord in your hearts.

編劇的話 Playwright’s Note
自從決定要將《雄獅少年》的動畫電影改編 成音樂劇,我一直想着兩個問題:第一,到 底要保留多少原著的部分?第二,如何以音 樂劇來呈現這個故事?
這兩個問題,由普通話版本到廣東話版 本,由第一稿到第八稿,我們一直鑽研思考。
難度在於,有動畫的珠玉在前,每個人對音樂 劇版本帶有不同的想像與期望。而作為編劇, 我所執着的是,如何選取動畫裏最有「戲劇」 的部份,推動情緒,讓音樂產生。
《雄獅少年》並不是一個複雜的故事,難 能可貴的是劇中簡單且熱血的信念。曾幾何 時,我也想過對主人公阿娟這個角色加入複 雜的轉變,但幾經嘗試,最後還是決定還原 基本步。因為動畫的精采之處,其實是少年 追夢的那份純粹。相比複雜的轉折,我相信 這份「純粹」更能打動觀眾。
一切看似簡單,其實也不簡單。除了劇 本之外,高世章及岑偉宗兩位老師在歌曲上 也有多次修改、增減。由始至終,團隊上下 每分每秒精益求精,我們努力尋求用最好的 方法,演繹出這個故事,以作為我們對原著 動畫的致敬。

I kept thinking about two questions when writing the musical adaption of the animated film I Am What I Am: to what extent should I retain the original scenes? And how do I present this story in the form of a musical?
These two questions challenged us as we moved from the Putonghua version to Cantonese, from the first draft to the eighth. As the original film was animated, we understood that everyone would use their own imaginations and have different expectations of the remake. Therefore, my task as the playwright was to wisely select the most “dramatic” parts of the animated original, generate music from them and stimulate people’s emotions.
I Am What I Am is not a complicated story. In fact, it is quite straightforward in the way it portrays the protagonist Ah Kuen’s pure yet resolute belief in pursuing his teenage dreams. I once thought of adding intricate twists and turns in the story. But after several trials, I decided to return to the simplicity we started with as this was the best way to capture the audience’s hearts.
However, this simplicity is not achieved through simple means. Apart from the script, Leon Ko and Chris Shum also made numerous revisions and improvements to the music. While showing great respect to the animated original, we constantly sought the best methods to tell the tale and strived to present this story to the fullest.

「要記住,所有音樂劇其實都是戲劇。」

接手執導《雄獅少年》廣東話版本的確 是個大挑戰。此山芋雖不至於太燙手,但最 大敵人始終是時間。本來只預了由普通話版 本過渡到廣東話版本的時間,變成必須排練 一齣新作品,當中曲詞本台燈聲也有改動。
在不足兩個月的時間下,所有工作只能集中 在戲劇上,安分又帶點激情地訴說這個勵志 的故事。
一個無名小子的成長故事,表達的都離 不開「愛」和「勇氣」。對我來說這個故事的 動人之處,是主角成長的勇氣來自不想讓父 母失望。在我的成長過程中,也時刻想證明 自己,不讓父母失望。而我偏愛《夠》這首 歌,因為這首歌正正描述我對兒子的期許: 去追夢吧,只要能發揮自己,爸媽就會開心。
「放棄縱有萬般理由,堅持只須一個就 夠!」這部作品令人感動的不僅僅是角色的堅 持,也是一班只接受短暫舞獅訓練的演員大 灑血汗的堅持。他們咬緊牙關堅持下去,只 希望給觀眾呈現最感人的故事。

Taking over as Director of the Cantonese version of I Am What I Am has been a great challenge. Although the task was not entirely a hot potato, we still had to face our biggest enemy: time. The original plan was to simply translate the Putonghua version into Cantonese, but I was compelled to help create an entirely new production, with modified lyrics, music, lighting and sound design. With less than two months to execute the plan, our attention had to be focused on the drama itself. And despite the various constraints, we were still able to tell a compelling story about passion and inspiration.
The story of a boy’s growth usually revolves around the themes of “love” and “courage”. What touches me the most about this story is the protagonist’s courage to grow, driven by his determination not to disappoint his parents. During my own journey, I also attempted to prove myself to my parents constantly. My favourite song from the musical is Enough and it aptly describes my expectations for my son: that he chases his dreams. As long as children make full use of their potential, all parents should feel satisfied.
“There could be a million reasons to give up, but it only takes one to persist!” Not only does the perseverance of the characters move the audience, but it’s also been soul-stirring to see the persistence of the actors who only received a small amount of lion dance training. They gritted their teeth and endured the hardship solely for one purpose: to present the most touching story to you all.

《雄獅少年》原創音樂劇(下稱《雄獅》)
改編自2021年同名人氣國產動畫電影, 其廣東話版本於第52屆香港藝術節首次公 演。音樂劇由知名香港班底創作,包括作 曲及編曲高世章、填詞岑偉宗、編劇張飛 帆及導演冼振東。高、岑、張三人繼得獎 音樂劇《大狀王》後再次合作,摩拳擦掌 炮製又一力作。
The original musical I Am What I Am is adapted from the popular 2021 Chinese animated film of the same title. The Cantonese version is premiering at the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival. Created by a Hong Kong musical theatre dream team, it also marks the first reunion of composer Leon Ko, lyricist Chris Shum, and playwright Cheung Fei-fan since their collaboration on the award-winning musical The Impossible Trial.
音樂劇由廣州大劇院、廣東歌舞劇院及 廣州歌舞劇院等多個內地單位與香港藝術家 合作製作,由北京精彩聯合出品。《雄獅》 以舞獅為題材,講述一群在廣州追尋夢想的 「留守少年」。男主角阿娟被與他同名的謎之 少女娟然啟發,與好友阿貓、阿狗向 隱 世舞 獅高手鹹魚強拜師,備戰大賽。但現實的打 擊接踵而來,阿娟面臨放棄夢想的抉擇。
The musical is produced by various mainland Chinese units with Hong Kong artists, including the Guangzhou Opera House, the Guangdong Song and Dance Theater, the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theater, co-executive-produced by the Beijing Splendid Culture & Entertainment Co., Ltd. 使不斷跌倒,依然屢敗屢試。
為了加強戲劇張力,比起電影版,張飛 帆讓阿娟跌得更痛。除了保留電影中阿娟為 了醫治父親而不得不放棄舞獅,打工賺錢的 情節,音樂劇還加入阿娟在追逐夢想時,所 面臨的現實與夢想之間的落差。他屢次被現 實碾壓,最終迷失了自我,把劇情的情緒推 向高峰。幸運的是,師傅最終拯救了他。
「年輕人沒有錯過,又怎叫年輕呢?舞 獅與做人一樣——跌倒,就站起來。有一句 話說得好:『成功其實只是比失敗多一次嘗 試』。」張飛帆道。
作為一套勵志青春劇,岑偉宗卻不想歌 詞流於媚俗的醒悟。想不到,他竟為一個鄉 村少年寫出了「catharsis」(情感宣洩,精神 淨化)!戲內不乏硬橋硬馬的舞獅情節,描寫 阿娟一步一步踏上高樁:「每步/進步/一起 /進步/更好/先進/精進/新進/長進/跨進 /更高」。曲調限定兩字一組,層層遞進的詞 組,形象化地描繪舞獅邁步向前的動態,造 就岑偉宗這句得意之作。
張、高、岑三位主創不約而同認為《雄 獅》非常適合做音樂劇,因為它包含很多情 感。高、岑更同被鹹魚強與珍姐的愛情觸 動。兩個不言愛的鄉下人,在歌詞間低調談 情:「麻煩避不過/鬼叫當初/整鬼整馬/係 都鍾意揀我」、「夢還夢/可惜始終要計家 用」,通俗而率真。
高說這可能是香港第一部以舞獅作主題 的音樂劇,技術挑戰雖大,但亦是非常大膽 的嘗試。「只要鼓聲在心中響起,我們就是雄 獅!」喚醒人心的舞獅鼓聲,就留待觀眾親自 入場感受了。

“This story is about underdogs finding success,” Ko says. Hungry for change, Ah Kuen falls in love with lion dancing and starts pursuing his dream. At the beginning, he is like a toddler learning to walk and keeps trying even though he continuously falls down.
For the stage version, playwright Cheung has introduced a devastating plot twist that increases the dramatic tension. As in the original film, Ah Kuen must give up lion dancing to earn money for his father’s medical expenses. In the stage version, Ah Kuen is discouraged by the gap between the harsh reality and his dream. With his dream dashed, he descends into depression and bewilderment, which paves the way to a climax in the story. Thankfully, his master saves him.
“Things go wrong for everyone during their youth. But we just pick ourselves up from wherever we’ve fallen—both martial arts and the art of life are like that. As the saying goes: 'success is but one more attempt than failure'," says Cheung.
For this inspirational musical, lyricist Shum didn’t want to create lyrics that dealt with a melodramatic awakening, but instead revolved around the theme of catharsis: “Every step, to progress, we together, to progress, to advance, to pioneer, to refine, to invent, to grow, to leap, to go higher.” While the ascending melody dictates the use of two Chinese words per line, Shum wisely adopted a combination of words with a progressive meaning, visually depicting the leaping motion of a dancing lion.
The three core creators, Cheung, Ko and Shum, agree that I Am What I Am is a perfect story for musical theatre as it deals with a wide range of relationships. Ko and Shum were also touched by the unwavering love between Salted-Fish Keung and his wife, Ah Chun, two humble peasants who rarely speak about love. Their love is subdued; this is reflected in the plain but sincere lyrics: “Troubles unavoidable, just blame yourself, left no stones unturned, chose no one but me at first”, “Dream on but we still need to count our household expenses”.
Ko remarks that it is probably the first musical in Hong Kong centred on lion dancing, which makes it a fascinating experiment despite the considerable technical difficulties involved. If you come away with anything from the show, it will be a renewed belief in the maxim that we should “listen to our hearts”.

Composer, Music Arranger, Music Director Leon Ko
Leon Ko received a Master’s degree in Musical Theatre Writing from New York University. He received the Richard Rodgers Award for his musical Heading East. In 2011, he wrote the musical Takeaway for the Theatre Royal Stratford East in London. For his Cantonese musicals The Good Person of Szechwan, The Legend of the White Snake, Field of Dreams, The Passage Beyond, Our Immortal Cantata, Sing Out, The Woman in Kenzo and The Impossible Trial, Ko received ten awards at the Hong Kong Drama Awards.
Ko served as Musical Director for the Mandarin version of Jacky Cheung’s musical Snow.Wolf.Lake, and composed the musical component of Cheung’s The Year of Jacky Cheung World Tour and Jacky Cheung 1/2 Century Tour
He also composed music for films. His work Perhaps Love won the awards for Best Song and Best Music at the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan, the Hong Kong Film Awards, the Asia-Pacific Film Festival and the Golden Bauhinia Awards. His theme song Ding Feng Bo for the movie The Last Tycoon won the award for Best Original Song at the 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards. He was also nominated for Best Original Film Score at the Golden Horse Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards for his work on the soundtrack of The Warlords. He also won an ASCAP Screen Music Award for his work on the soundtrack of Monster Hunt 2.

Lyricist Chris Shum
Chris Shum holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Hong Kong Baptist University and a Master’s degree in Philosphy from The University of Hong Kong. He is a Hong Kong lyricist whose lyrics have been featured in musicals and stage dramas, as well as in films, television and pop songs.
He won the award for Best Original Film Song at the 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards, Best Original Film Song at the 43rd Golden Horse Awards, two CASH Golden Sail Music Awards, Best Original Lyrics at the Hong Kong Drama Awards four times, and Best Lyrics at the 31st Hong Kong Drama Awards.
Shum’s works as a playwright and lyricist include The Woman in Kenzo, the a cappella musical Pica Pica Choose by Yat Po Singers and Mr. Wing Theatre Company from Taiwan, and the a cappella theatre production This Victoria Has No Secrets also by Yat Po Singers. He also wrote the Cantonese lyrics for the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s La Cage Aux Folles. He has written lyrics for film scores, including the Cantonese version of Disney’s The Lion King (2019) and Frozen II (2019), and the interlude Step on High for the movie The Rescue. His latest musical theatre lyrical works include The Impossible Trial by the West Kowloon Cultural District and the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and Yat-sen at the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Playwright Cheung Fei-fan
Cheung Fei-fan is a Hong Kong stage, television and film scriptwriter, columnist and lyricist. He graduated from the Department of Cinema and Television at Hong Kong Baptist University's School of Communication. He is currently the Dramaturge for Theatre Space, Creative Director of Chasing Theatre, and a member of the Radio Television Hong Kong Board of Advisors. He has written scripts for various theatre companies including the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, the Hong Kong Dance Company, Theatre Space, The Nonsensemakers, Actors’ Family and more. He has also written three highly acclaimed Hong Kong musicals: The Impossible Trial, A Tale of the Southern Sky and The Passage Beyond He won the award for Young Artist (Drama) at the 2010 Hong Kong Arts Development Awards, issued by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the award for Best Script at the 24th Hong Kong Drama Awards for Checkmate in 2015; the Hong Kong Television Award for Best Screenplay for Elite Brigade IV in 2019, and the award for Best Lyrics at the 30th Hong Kong Drama Awards for A Tale of the Southern Sky in 2022. He was named Artist of the Year (Drama) at the 17th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards in 2023.

Director Terence Sin
Terence Sin Chun-tung is a theatre director, playwright and actor from Hong Kong. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Drama from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and won the Best Director award during his studies. He also holds a Master’s degree in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University in the UK, a Master’s degree in Applied Theatre/Drama Education from Griffith University in Australia, and a Doctor of Education degree from The University of Hong Kong.
Sin has performed, translated, written and directed more than 120 productions. He directed five revivals of Our Time, Our Hong Kong for the Hang Seng Call for Young Talent in Theatre in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. He also adapted several dance productions for the Hong Kong Dance Company, including three revivals of L’Amour Immortel, and two revivals of Storm Clouds and Eagle Companions.
Sin currently serves as the Director of StoryCast Studio, the Assistant Principal of Performing Arts at Caritas Charles Vath College, a performing arts specialist with the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, an examiner at the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and a member of the judging panel at the Hong Kong Drama Awards.

A graduate of the Macao Conservatory, Florence Cheong is a director, choreographer, playwright, dancer and actor with more than 10 years of experience in the arts and entertainment industry. She has served as the Dance Director for the musical film Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars; playwright, director, choreographer and actor for Call Out The Musical by the Macau TDSM Dance Studio; choreographer for Chung Ying Theatre Company’s The Woman in Kenzo; choreographer and actor for the Broadway musical First Date; choreographer for the musical Sing Out, which was named Best Production at the Hong Kong Drama Awards. She also worked as a choreographer and assistant director for the Shanghai Disney Resort performance Frozen.

Co-Choreographer Liu Zihao
Liu Zihao is a young choreographer from the Guangdong Song and Dance Theater. He graduated from the Beijing Dance Academy, majoring in Chinese Classical Dance. His choreography has been shortlisted for numerous national awards.
His major works include the choreography for the musicals Misson Must Be Achieved and The Jinming Cabaret, the ballet Fragrance of the Snow, and the drama The Deep Sea. He also choreographed for the opening ceremony of the 27th China Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival, and served as the Programme Director for the Cultural and Sports Gala at the closing ceremony of the 15th Guangdong Provincial Games and the eighth Paralympic Games. Additionally, he directed the Reunion in Guangzhou: Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening-up evening event organised by the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese.

Music Arranger Pong Law
Pong Law graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Master’s degree in Composition and Electronic Music. He is now a freelance musician and mainly works as a composer, arranger and instrumental performer. He has composed and arranged for various orchestras, including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. In recent years, he has actively contributed towards various theatre productions. These include serving as the Music Director for Draft My Life by We Draman; the arranger for The Impossible Trial by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre; and the Music Director for Blood Brothers and Next to Normal by the Hong Kong 3 Arts Musical Institute. In addition to musicals, he has also worked as an orchestral composer for several films, including Zero to Hero. His orchestration for the film My Prince Edward won the award for Best Original Film Score at the 39th Hong Kong Film Awards.

Music Director Tony Tong
Tony Tong is the Deputy Troupe Leader of the Guangdong Song and Dance Theater and the leader of its electroacoustic band. He is also a National ClassThree Composer.
He has served as the composer, arranger, band conductor and music director of the musical Farewell, 1990; the composer and arranger of the China National Arts Fund musical Misson Must Be Achieved; the arranger, producer and keyboard player for the GRT Satellite Channel’s Chinese Music Ceremony, The Songs that Flow, Labor Chant and Sing Cantonese. He was also the Music Director of the 13th Guangdong Arts Festival’s closing ceremony, and the Guangdong Federation of Trade Unions’ Greater Bay Area cultural performance celebrating the 70th National Day and the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to China.

Scenographer Jan Wong
Jan Wong is a spatial designer and stage designer, specialising in set and costume design.
His recent theatrical credits include Heading West 3: The Final Trail, Miracles of the Namiya General Store, The Shape of Things, The Woman in Kenzo, We Are Gay and Skylight. Wong’s musical and operatic work includes The Originals, Songs of Portrait and Love Streams. His dance work includes The Last Dance, Dance of Strings, and many more. He has received several set design awards for The Island Whispers…, Reveries of the Red Chamber, and Nezha: Untold Solitude.

Lighting Designer, Scenographer Yeung Tsz-yan
Yeung Tsz-yan graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Stage Lighting Design. She has worked with several major arts groups in Hong Kong and Macau and is now a freelance stage worker.
During her studies at the HKAPA, she won the award for Best Lighting Design at the Hong Kong Drama Awards for her work in Phaedra. Since graduating, she has received the same award four times for her work in Wedraman’s Iron and the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s Attempts on Her Life, Marriage and Le Père. In 2011 and 2015, she was selected as the Hong Kong representative at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space.

Ha Yan-pui graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ Theatre, Sound and Music Recording Department, and has worked as a sound designer, engineer and sound consultant for music festivals both in Hong Kong and overseas. Her recent work includes the West Kowloon Cultural District and the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s The Impossible Trial by (for which she received the award for Best Sound Design at the 31st Hong Kong Drama Awards); The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s The Palace of Eternal Life on a Moonlit Night; the Hong Kong Arts Festival’s Yat-sen; Chung Ying Theatre Company’s The Woman in Kenzo (which received the award for Best Sound Design at the 30th Hong Kong Drama Awards); and The Originals (Reimagined).

Costume Designer, Stylist Demon Zhang
Demon Zhang graduated from Central Saint Martin’s at the University of the Arts London, majoring in Fashion Design and Print. She is currently the Creative Director of MITHRIDATE, having previously worked for Alexander McQueen and Dior.
In 2019, Zhang became the Creative Design Director of MITHRIDATE, a pioneering fashion brand in London, and her 20SS collection released the same year was selected for the official programme at London Fashion Week. MITHRIDATE received numerous praises from Harper’s Bazaar UK as “the best show of London Fashion Week”.

Zhao Weibin is an expert in Guangdong lion dance, which is part of the nation’s intangible cultural heritage. He represents the fifth generation of the Zhao family in the art form and is the son of the “King of the Southern Lion Dance”, Zhao Jihong. He is also the chairman of the Guangzhou Dragon and Lion Dance Association.
Zhao participated in the Hong Kong Luminous Dragon and Lion Dance Championships for nine consecutive years, winning the gold prize and other international awards. He also participated in the 60th Anniversary of the National Day Global Chinese Dragon and Lion Dance Competition and was named champion at the Plum Blossom Pile Lion Dance Competition.

Repetiteur Beilosi Fung
Beilosi Fung graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), majoring in Vocal Music, and studied under the famous soprano Ella Kiang. She later went to the UK to study Estill Voice Training with well-known singing coach Anne-Marie Speed and completed the Advanced Level with famed vocal coach Naomi Eyers.
Fung teaches musical theatre singing at the HKAPA. She also founded Beilosi Music Studio, where she teaches as a private singing coach. She has taught many famous singers in Hong Kong, such as Vincy Chan, Gigi Leung, Ekin Cheng and Kary Ng.

Jordan Cheng as Ah Kuen (Lau Ka-kuen)
Jordan Cheng is a musical theatre performer, creator and vocal director. He graduated from the Guildford School of Acting in England with a Master’s degree in Musical Theatre. He also studied theatre under the Artistic Director of the Hong Kong 3 Arts Musical Institute, Mohamed Drissi.
He was named Best Actor at the 2018 Toronto Theatre Critics Awards for his acting in Mr. Shi and His Lover, and was nominated as Best Leading Actor at the 2017 Hong Kong Drama Awards for A Midsummer Night’s Dream and as Best Supporting Actor at the 2020 Hong Kong Drama Awards for Le Cage aux Folles. In 2023, he had his first win for Best Actor (Tragedy/Drama) in the Hong Kong Drama Awards for the musical The Impossible Trial In the same year, he won the 17th Hong Kong Arts Development Award for a Young Artist (Drama).

Kit Chan as Ah Chun (Chui Wai-chun)
Kit Chan is one of Singapore’s most established and multi-faceted artists. She graduated from the LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore. In 1997, she starred in the musical Snow.Wolf.Lake with Hong Kong singer Jacky Cheung as Artistic Director. Her song Wait and Wait from the musical, as well as her popular songs Liking You, Heartache and Worried, have become part of the collective memories of Mandarin pop music listeners.
She has starred in several original musicals in Singapore, China and other regions, and is one of the few musical actors who are fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese. Her repertoire includes Snow.Wolf.Lake, The Legend, What’s Love About?, Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress, Matteo Ricci and The LKY Musical.

自由演員,畢業於香港演藝學院戲劇學院表演專 業,曾是香港中英劇團全職演員,2022年憑音樂 劇《穿Kenzo的女人》獲第30屆香港舞台劇獎最 佳女配角(悲劇/正劇)。

Belinda Chan is a freelance actor who graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ School of Drama, majoring in Acting for Drama. She has worked as a full-time actor at the Chung Ying Theatre Company. In 2022, she was named Best Supporting Actress (Tragedy/Drama) at the Hong Kong Drama Awards for her performance in the musical The Woman in Kenzo
Her performances for the theatre company include Pride and Prejudice and The Miracles of the Namiya General Store. During her school years, she won the Award for Outstanding Performer twice, and was also awarded the Fredric Mao Scholarship and the Grantham Scholarships Fund. She was nominated for the Actor of the Year Award at the 2017 IATC(HK) Critics’ Awards and as Best Actress at the 10th Hong Kong Theatre Libre for her role as Nina in The Seagull.

Fung Chi-yau as Cat (Lau Fook-kwan)
Fung Chi-yau graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a Bachelor’s degree in Drama, majoring in Acting.
He has appeared in numerous productions including the musical Final Call: 929G and Om Encounter by Yat Po Singers, The Impossible Trial by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre in collaboration with West Kowloon Cultural District, the musicals Dani Girl and Next to Normal by Hong Kong 3 Arts Musical Institute, Sing Out organised by the Lee Hysan Foundation, Xiyang Zhanshi and A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Dionysus Contemporary Theatre, and February 14 – a musical, Female N °7 and Invisible Men by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre.

Sam Lau as Dog (Lau Chi-hung)
Sam Lau is a musical theatre actor, playwright, lyricist, director and singing coach. He is one of the associate artists of Yat Po Singers and the Programme Director of the Jockey Club Yat Po Happy A-gecappella group. He graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and received a Master’s degree in Drama, majoring in Playwrighting. He won the award for Best Original Music of the Year at the 2022 A Cappella China Beehive Awards for The Water will Tell, and was nominated for Best Original Lyrics at the 27th Hong Kong Drama Awards for Save The Next Song for Me. His recent performances include February 14 by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre; Om Encounter, Love, Death and Everything In-between, Our Immortal Cantata, the musicals Matteo Ricci and Fly Bao to the Moon; and Art School Musical by Edward Lam Dance Theatre.

Guangzhou Opera House
廣州大劇院由廣州市政府投資建造,歷時五年落 成。由著名建築設計師扎哈.哈迪德和聲學大師 哈羅德.馬歇爾聯袂設計,曾獲《今日美國》評 為「世界十大歌劇院」之一。
劇院開幕十三年以來以「國際性、創新性、 原創性、探索性」為原則,舉辦文藝演出、生產製 作演藝作品。先後有一千七百多個中外藝術院團 和四萬七千多名藝術家,帶來了三千三百四十二 場精采的演出。
劇院曾與羅馬歌劇院、紐約大都會歌劇院、 英國科文特花園皇家歌劇院等世界一流劇院合 作,製作了多部歌劇,並匯聚全球藝術家製作了 歌劇《馬可.波羅》、話劇《活動變人形》、《呼 吸》、實驗戲劇《存在與時間2.0》、線上戲劇 《等待戈多》等。該劇院也曾攜粵港澳機構聯合 製作音樂劇《朝暮有情人》、舞劇《舞跡可尋》, 以及沉浸式獨幕喜歌劇《麗塔》等。
The Guangzhou Opera House is funded by the Guangzhou Government and was constructed over a period of five years. It was designed by leading architect Zaha Hadid and acoustics expert Harold Marshall, and was included on the list of the “10 Best Opera Houses Around the World” by USA Today.
In the 13 years since its opening, the Guangzhou Opera House has hosted and produced various performances and performing arts programmes under the principle of “international, innovative, original and explorative”. More than 1,700 Chinese and foreign art institutes and groups, and 47,000 artists have brought 3,342 wonderful performances.
The opera house teamed up with the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Metropolitan Opera House in New York and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London to produce several world-class theatre operas, including Marco Polo, the dramas Huo Dong Bian Ren Xing and Zhong Nanshan, the experimental drama SEIN UND ZEIT 2.0 and the online drama Waiting for Godot. It has also co-produced a number of works in collaboration with art institutions in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, including the musical The Lily of the Valley the dance theatre Dance the Trace and the immersive one-act comic opera Rita.

廣東歌舞劇院是廣東省文化和旅遊廳直屬的國有 專業藝術表演團體,前身是成立於1949年7月的 華南文工團。
七十多年來,廣東歌舞劇院創作並排演了 多部文藝精品,包括舞劇《沙灣往事》和《田 園》、音樂劇《使命必達》、舞蹈《灣》等。多次 獲文旅部文華大獎、中宣部及廣東省「五個一工 程」獎、全國舞劇觀摩演出大獎、全國舞蹈比賽 金獎、中國舞蹈「荷花獎」金獎、國際德爾菲藝 術比賽特別大獎、中國中央電視台電視大獎賽表 演金獎、廣東省藝術節一等獎等殊榮。
Founded in July 1949, the Guangdong Song and Dance Theater is a state-owned professional performing arts group directly under the Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, formerly known as the South China Cultural Troupe.
During the past 70 years, the Guangdong Song and Dance Theater has created and rehearsed several literary and artistic masterpieces. It includes the dance drama Dragon Boat Racing and Awakening, the musical Misson Must Be Achieved and the dances piece Tide. It has been awarded the Wenhua Award by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the “Five One Project” Award by the Central Propaganda Department and Guangdong Province, the Grand Prize at the National Dance Theater Observation Performance, the Gold Medal at the National Dance Competition, the Gold Medal of the Chinese Dance Lotus Prize, the Special Grand Prize at the International Delphi Competition, the Gold Medal for performance at the CCTV Grand Prize Competition, and the First Prize at the Guangdong Provincial Art Festival, among other awards.

Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre
廣州歌舞劇院前身為廣州歌舞團,成立於1965年, 曾被《光明日報》譽為「羊城的一束鮮花」。劇院 創作並演出了多個作品,包括:舞劇《星海.黃 河》、《醒.獅》、《龍.舟》、音樂劇《星》、《西關 小姐》、《和平使者》、小舞劇《醒》、《英歌》等, 榮獲全國「五個一工程」獎、文化部文華大獎等多 項獎項。多年來,該劇院也承擔着廣州市重要的政 治外事文化交流使命,在弘揚中華優秀傳統文化的 藝術實踐中作出積極的貢獻。
Founded in 1965, the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theatre (formerly the Guangzhou University Song and Dance Troupe), has been praised as the “bouquet of flowers of Guangzhou City” by the Guangming Daily, a national daily newspaper published in mainland China. The theatre has created a large number of outstanding works, including the dance dramas Xinghai Yellow River, Awakening Lion and Loong; the musicals Stars, Ladyship of Xiguan and Messenger of Peace; and the mini dance dramas Awakening and Yingge Dance. The theatre has won numerous top awards, including the “Five One Project” Award and the Wenhua Award. Over the years, it has undertaken important political, foreign affairs and cultural exchange tasks in Guangzhou, and has actively contributed to promoting traditional Chinese culture.
