第五十二屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可喜可賀。
歷經五十餘年,香港藝術節已成為享譽國際的文化盛 事。今屆藝術節續放異彩,雲集約1,400名本地及海 外藝術家,帶來逾150場不同類型的表演,由音樂、 歌劇、戲曲,以至戲劇、舞蹈、跨媒體藝術和大型特 備節目等,必定是另一場令人難忘的藝術盛宴。
今屆藝術節以李察.史特勞斯的《拿索斯島的亞莉安 妮》揭開序幕,由巴伐利亞國立歌劇院獻上這齣莊諧 並重的精妙劇作,令人期待。個多月後,上海芭蕾舞
團將呈獻中國與法國聯合製作的《花樣年華》,作為 藝術節的閉幕表演。這齣精彩絕倫、中西協作的芭蕾 舞劇,正好反映香港獨特的中西創意文化根源,並彰 顯我們作為中外文化藝術交流中心的重要地位。今年 藝術節匯聚全球各地佳作,包括別具一格的「聚焦當 代阿拉伯」系列,更形豐富多采。
我對香港的文藝創意事業前景充滿信心。政府銳意竭 盡所能,鼓勵本地藝術家奮發向上,並確保他們獲 得所需和應得的表演機會。正如我在《施政報告》所 述,新成立的文創產業發展處每年會推動60個業界考 察團、海外展覽及其他文化展演活動;「電影發展基 金」和「創意智優計劃」共獲注資43億元,以支持本 港電影業;「重點演藝項目計劃」亦即將推出,協助 本地大型表演藝術創作,以及培育代表香港的國際文 化品牌。
政府會繼續與各界攜手合作,積極推動文化藝術及創 意業界的發展。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 52nd edition.
Over this past half century and more, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has grown into a celebrated international cultural event. This year promises to be another memorable Festival, featuring about 1,400 overseas and local artists in more than 150 performances across multiple genres, from music, opera and Chinese opera to theatre, dance, multi-arts and large-scale special events.
This year’s Festival opens with the Bayerische Staatsoper’s presentation of Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, a bravura mingling of high art and comedy. It closes, more than a month later, with the Sino-French coproduction of the Shanghai Ballet’s A Sigh of Love. This inspired East-West collaboration reflects Hong Kong’s singular East-West creative and cultural roots and our growing role as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. Indeed, this year’s Festival is rife with performances from all over the world, including a special Arab Arts Focus series.
I believe in Hong Kong’s creative promise, and my Government is determined to do all it can to encourage our local artists and ensure that they have the performance access they need and deserve. As I mentioned in my Policy Address, our newly established Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency will promote 60 industry missions, overseas exhibitions and other cultural showcases annually; a total of $4.3 billion will be injected into the Film Development Fund and the CreateSmart Initiative to support our film industry; and the Signature Performing Arts Programme Scheme will be launched to assist largescale, local performing arts productions and nurture the development of Hong Kong cultural brands internationally. The Government will continue to work hand in hand with relevant sectors to proactively promote the development of arts, culture and creative industries.

With the Festival now back in full swing, we cherish this opportunity to come together once again and appreciate the arts with you. As we celebrate the Festival’s full-scale comeback and contemplate the development of the arts in this ever-changing environment, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has played a critical role in nurturing and sustaining the performing arts scene.

走過半世紀的香港藝術節,一直為國際與本地最優秀 的表演者搭建舞台,積極促進中外文化交流。經歷了 三年疫情的洗禮,藝術節終於在第52屆再度迎來「花 樣年華」,在全面復常的狀態下再度為本地觀眾與遊 客獻上今天和明日的經典,不單讓大家可以從眾多音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇、戲曲和多媒體作品中重新細賞遺世 瑰寶,更邀來多位重量級中外大師坐鎮,陣容鼎盛、 豐富多元,足以滿足不同觀眾群體的喜好。

For more than half a century, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has provided a stage for the most outstanding local and international performers, and actively enhanced cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. After three years of the pandemic, we are delighted to come back in full force and present to local audiences and overseas visitors treasured classics of today and tomorrow. Our programme features an eclectic lineup of music, dance, theatre, Chinese opera and multimedia productions, with a range of Chinese and international legends set to command the stage. With such a rich and diverse programme, there is something to delight everyone.
This year, our ongoing support for the development of local artists provides opportunities for them to flex their creative muscles through collaborations with leading artists from all over the world. At the same time, we also empower artists to innovate through the power of technology and create refreshing experiences for our audiences.

香港藝術節 於1973年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的 文化盛事,於每年2、3月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國 際藝術家的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育 活動,致力豐富香港的文化生活。
香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2023/24財政年度預 計收入(包括第52屆香港藝術節及2024年「無限亮」) 約港幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔 總收入約12%,另外約25%需來自票房收入,約48% 則須依賴來自各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊 助和捐款。預計餘下的約15%則來自其他收入,包括 政府針對捐款和贊助收入而提供的配對資助。

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts, as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events, in February and March each year.
The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2023/24 (including the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2024 “No Limits” programme) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 12% of the Festival’s total income. Around 25% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 48% from sponsorship and donations by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching grant scheme, which matches income generated through private-sector sponsorship and donations.

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced more than 250 local productions across various genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include Table for Six on Stage, Loveless Romance, We Are Gay, The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

香港藝術節 大力投資下一代的藝術教育。「青少年之 友」成立31年來,已為逾820,000位本地中學生及大專 生提供藝術體驗活動。藝術節近年亦開展多項針對大、 中、小學生的藝術教育活動,包括由國際及本地藝術家 主持的示範講座及工作坊、學生展演、演前講座、公開 彩排以及欣賞藝術節演出。同時,通過「學生票捐助計 劃」,藝術節每年提供約10,000張半價學生票。
香港藝術節每年主辦一系列多元化並深入社區的「加料 節目」,例如電影放映、示範講座、大師班、工作坊、 座談會、後台參觀、展覽、藝人談、文化導賞團等, 鼓勵觀眾與藝術家互動接觸。
香港藝術節亦銳意將共融藝術理念拓展到社區每一角 落。由藝術節與香港賽馬會慈善信託基金聯合呈獻 的「無限亮」計劃於2019年正式開展,透過一系列的 演出及多元的教育及社區外展節目,「無限亮」致力 創造共融空間,讓不同能力人士均可以一同欣賞、參 與、擁抱藝術。
為創造更穩健的財政環境以及確保藝術節的長期可持 續性, 香港藝術節基金會 於2022年成立,旨在讓藝術 節在未來進行年度預算以外的大型特別項目。

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer), co-produced by the HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch; Richard III and The Tempest, produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with the HKAF as a co-commissioning institution; Green Snake, co-commissioned with the Shanghai International Arts Festival; Dream of the Red Chamber, co-produced with the San Francisco Opera; and Laila, a co-production of the HKAF and the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.
The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. During the past 31 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached more than 820,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 halfprice student tickets each year.
The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions and guided cultural tours.
The HKAF actively promotes inclusion via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.
To provide greater financial security and long-term sustainability for the Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation was officially launched in 2022. Donations to the Foundation will be used towards enabling the Festival to present in the future large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival (“HKAF”) reserves the right to refuse admission of any latecomers to the event. 關於評彈 About Pingtan
評彈是源於蘇州的說唱藝術,最早見載於明 朝,稱為「說書」。「書」即故事之意。評
彈形式簡單,傳統上一至三人即可組成演出 團體,在江南各地演出,並以吳語區人民為 主要聽眾(俗稱「聽客」)。所謂「評彈」是 「評話」與「彈詞」兩種曲藝類別的總稱。二
者都用蘇州話演出,不同之處在於前者的表 演純粹 為 口述故事(稱「大書」),而後者在 講故事時伴有音樂與唱段(稱「小書」)。鑒 於一直以來「大書」和「小書」的場地以及 觀眾對象並無區別,兩邊的藝人也常常一起 演出,因此到了1940年代,二者便被正式統 稱為「評彈」。
評彈演出的劇目以歷史故事為主,過去 大多以長篇形式演出:說書人每天演出一小 部分,連綴成為一個完整的故事,與今天的 電視連續劇類同。1949年以前,一些長篇 演出甚至可延續幾個月至一年以上,如今則 通常限定為十五天。演出場所最初為露天場 地,後來進入茶樓酒肆。評彈成功在二十世 紀進入上海市場後,亦漸漸出現了評彈專業 劇場。這些場地統稱為「書場」。
Pingtan is a folk art involving storytelling and ballad singing that originated in Suzhou. It was first recorded during the Ming dynasty as shuoshu, which literally means “storytelling”. The format of pingtan is simple. Traditionally, a group of one to three people formed a troupe and performed throughout the Jiangnan region. Audiences (known as “listening guests”) were speakers of the Wu language. The term pingtan is a collective term for two art forms: pinghua (storytelling) and tanci (ballad singing), with both performed in the Suzhou dialect. The difference between the two is that pinghua involves only oral storytelling (also known as dashu), while tanci combines music and singing to tell the story (also known as xiaoshu). Since both forms used the same venues and played to the same audiences, and the artists often performed together, pinghua and tanci started to become collectively known as pingtan in the 1940s.
The pingtan repertoire is mainly made up of historical stories. In the past, most of the performances were long, with the storytellers performing a small portion each day, from the beginning to the end, similar to a television series nowadays. Before 1949, some full-length performances would last for months and even more than a year. These days, the duration of a full-length performance is often limited to 15 days due to the faster pace of life. Pingtan performances were first staged in open-air venues, and later moved to teahouses and restaurants. After the art form successfully entered the Shanghai market in the 20th century, professional pingtan theatres gradually appeared. These venues are collectively known as shuchang.

評彈演出的魅力在於曲折離奇的故事情 節、優美的音樂唱腔以及靈活多樣的表演。
評彈吸收崑曲、京劇乃至電影等藝術形式的 音樂及表演方式,漸漸從純粹的講故事變成 多元化的表演藝術(如姿態、身段、動作)。
這是評彈與中國其他講故事的曲藝形式最大 的不同——如粵語講古沒有音樂;有音樂伴 奏的福建與台灣的唸歌仔及溫州的鼓詞則缺 乏表演要素。
評彈演出由五大要素組成:「說」、 「噱」、「彈」、「唱」、「演」。
「說」Shuo
「說」 又稱「說表」或者「說 白」,即陳述,亦是評彈表演最 基本、最常用的技巧。評彈演員 通過「說」這一手段,時而從局 外人的角度描述故事背景或發表 評論,時而進入故事扮演當中 角色。這種在業內稱為「跳進跳 出」(即說書人反覆進出故事內 外)。
The charm of pingtan performance lies in the twists and turns of the storylines, the beauty of the music and singing, and the flexibility of the performers. By adopting musical and performative features from kun opera, Peking opera and even movies, pingtan gradually transformed from pure storytelling into an art form with a variety of performance styles (such as unique gestures, stances and movements). This made pingtan stand out from other types of Chinese storytelling art forms. For example, Cantonese storytelling does not have music, while Fujian and Taiwan’s liam kua and Wenzhou’s guci, which are accompanied by music, lack performative elements. Pingtan performances involve five main elements: shuo (talking), xue (joking), tan (instrument playing), chang (singing) and yan (acting).
Shuo, also known as shuobiao or shuobai (which literally means “narrating”), is essentially the most basic and commonly used technique in pingtan. Through the shuo technique, a performer may describe the background of a story or comment from an outsider’s point of view, while at other times, they may enter the story and play various roles, jumping in and out of a narrative throughout the performance.
「噱」Xue
「噱」即開玩笑或講笑話,為 「噱頭」之簡稱。作為評彈第二 重要的因素,「噱」被稱為「書 中之寶」,因其大大豐富了表演 的趣味性。有些噱頭與劇情直接 相關,被稱為「肉裏噱」;另外 一些則與劇情無關,被稱為「外 插花」。後者包括一切知識掌 故、政治評論或八卦新聞等等。
有人認為評彈「說」與「噱」的 技巧十分接近當下的「棟篤笑」 (內地稱「脫口秀」),也有一定 道理。
Xue is a shortened form of the word xuetou, which refers to telling jokes during a performance. As the second most important element of pingtan, xue is considered the “treasure of the books” because it greatly enriches the performance. Some jokes are directly related to the plot and are called roulixue (“jokes in the flesh”), while others are unrelated to the plot and are called waichahua (“inserting flowers outside”). The latter can include all types of information and knowledge, political commentary, gossip and more.
Some believe the techniques of shuo and xue in pingtan are similar to those of contemporary stand-up comedy (known as a “talk show” in mainland China), and there is some truth to this.

「彈」Tan
「彈」即樂器的彈奏,主要指彈 詞演員配合及襯托唱腔的器樂 伴奏。如一人演出(稱為「單 檔」),只須彈奏三弦;如二人演 出(稱為「雙檔」),則「上手」 彈奏三弦,「下手」彈奏琵琶。
彈奏的旋律,是唱腔中的過門 (即前奏、間奏、尾奏等),以及 雙檔演唱時相互襯托唱腔的旋 律。
Tan refers to the playing of an instrument. For one-person performances (dandang), simply playing the sanxian is sufficient. For two-person performances (shuangdang), one performer plays the sanxian while the other one plays the pipa. The instrumental piece either serves as a prelude, interlude or coda of a sung passage, or as a foil for the singing part during a two-person performance.
「唱」Chang
「唱」,顧名思義,是彈詞演員 的演唱。長篇故事中的唱以表現 人物內心活動為主。另外,在長 篇故事開場之前,藝人常會演唱 一段與故事內容無關的唱段,稱 為「開篇」。二十世紀中期是評 彈極盛時期,評彈界出現了一些 影響深遠的唱腔流派,它們都 以開創者的姓或名命名,如「蔣 調」(蔣月泉)、「張調」(張鑒 庭)、「沈、薛調」(沈儉安與薛 筱卿)及「琴調」(朱雪琴)等。
其中「蔣調」瀟灑、「張調」激 昂、「沈、薛調」節奏明快,既 繼承了評彈傳統,也吸收了戲曲 (主要是京劇與崑曲)以至當時 流行音樂的特點。
Chang refers to the singing of tanci performers. The singing in full-length stories mainly expresses the characters’ inner landscapes. In addition, it is customary for an artist to sing a tune unrelated to the content of the story before the opening of a full-length story. This is known as a kaipian (opening piece). The heyday of pingtan in the mid-20th century saw the emergence of several pingtan singing schools with a far-reaching influence. All of them are named after their founders, such as the Jiang Style (Jiang Yuequan), the Zhang Style (Zhang Jianting), the Shen-Xue Style (Shen Jian’an and Xue Xiaoqing), and the Qin Style (Zhu Xueqin), and so on. Among them, the great panache of the Jiang Style, the passion of the Zhang Style and the rapid rhythms of the Shen-Xue Style have inherited the tradition of pingtan. But these styles also absorbed elements of xiqu (mainly Peking opera and kun opera) and even pop music of the time.

Yan (acting) refers to the simulated movements and gestures of a performer. Pingtan uses a technique known as qijuese (role playing), which means to imitate the language and actions of the story’s characters. Therefore, yan can also be regarded as a part of qijuese. In the early days of pingtan, performers were not required to perform to any great extent. But with the arrival of pingtan in Shanghai in the early 20th century, performers were influenced by theatre productions and movies, and gradually increased the amount of acting in their shuchang performances to meet the needs of contemporary audiences.
評彈雖然歷史悠久,但絕非只是「遺 產」,而是有着非凡的再生能力。過去二十多 年,有彈詞演員將《還珠格格》、《瑯琊榜》 等影視作品改編成長篇故事或開篇節目;另 有彈詞演員用評彈方式演唱周杰倫《青花瓷》 這樣的流行歌曲。評彈的生命力之旺盛,可 見一斑。

A Romance of Pingtan: Breaking the Boundaries Between Dialects
台上一桌兩椅,兩位評彈說書人各彈奏小 三絃和琵琶,說唱中國古典文學故事,時 而一人分飾多角,時而擔當旁述,以現代 人角度點評情節,遊走眾角色的內心世 界,難怪上海評彈團團長高博文形容這門 藝術是「善於被打扮的小姑娘」。
On the stage sits a table with two chairs. Two performers skilled in the art of storytelling and musical performance are seated at the table, playing a xiao sanxian and a pipa respectively. They start reciting and singing classical Chinese literary tales. At times, one performer takes on multiple roles, while at other times they provide supplementary narration. From a contemporary perspective, they offer commentary on the plot and navigate the inner worlds of its various characters. With such an elegant, complex approach, it’s no wonder that Gao Bowen, the director of the Shanghai Pingtan Troupe, describes this art form as a “malleable young lady”.

評彈是源自明朝蘇州的說唱藝術,以蘇 州方言「吳語」演出,吳語被形容為「吳儂 軟語」,聽起來輕婉柔美,情感豐沛。習藝近 四十年的高博文解釋,在傳統演出中,一位 說書人可以連唱多天,每天唱兩小時,把一 個長篇故事說完。不過上海評彈團為香港藝 術節帶來的《紅樓夢中人》彈詞流派演唱會 屬大型綜合表演,陣容鼎盛得多,當中包含 〈黛玉焚稿〉、〈王熙鳳〉等十來首曲,各由
不同演員獨自或兩人演出,呈現多種評彈流 派和腔調,藉以展示最切合角色的性格。為
了讓香港觀眾容易投入和易於理解,評彈團 還選取了一些較廣為人知的經典愛情劇目, 如《白蛇傳》、《長生殿》、《啼笑因緣》等。
其實所謂「善於被打扮」,不只是評彈 的表演方式,也指其音樂特質,連爵士樂、 搖滾、流行音樂都可融入其中。說書人一開 聲,無需戲服、實物道具或佈景,就能帶觀 眾入戲,讓人猶如置身江南園林、古鎮。這 種氛圍更令評彈打破言語限制,吸引各地不 懂吳語而又嚮往老江南的年輕觀眾。
「語言是種障礙,但不是不可逾越的障 礙。」高博文指出,雖然普通話普及化,不 利保留方言及推廣傳統地方戲曲藝術,但劇 團以往在內地演出,都會因應觀眾理解能 力,配上字幕並調節演出內容,例如在上海 演出,會較多表述;到東北或廣東地區演出 時,觀眾不懂蘇州話,他們則加強演唱。
Pingtan, which originated in Suzhou during the Ming dynasty, is a storytelling and singing art form performed in the Suzhou dialect, known as the Wu dialect. The dialect is often described as the “soft speech of the Wu people”, as it sounds gentle, melodious and emotionally rich. Gao, who has studied and practised pingtan for nearly 40 years, explains that in traditional performances, a storyteller could sing for two hours each day continually to complete a lengthy story. However, at the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Shanghai Pingtan Troupe will take a more condensed approach for Dream of the Red Chamber: A Concert. This large-scale, comprehensive performance features an extensive lineup, including more than ten pieces such as Daiyu Burns Her Manuscripts and Wang Xifeng, performed individually or by pairs of different actors and actresses. It’s a showcase of the various styles and intonations of pingtan, aiming to accurately depict the characters’ personalities. To engage and facilitate understanding for the Hong Kong audience, the troupe has chosen to perform excerpts from well-known classic romantic plays such as The Legend of the White Snake, The Palace of Eternal Youth and Fate in Tears and Laughter in separate programmes.
The concept of being “malleable” does not just refer to the performance style of pingtan—it also encompasses its musical qualities, with the potential for integration of genres such as jazz, rock and pop music. As the storyteller begins to speak, audience members will understand why there’s no need for theatrical costumes, well-crafted props or elaborate sets. The mere sound of the performers’ voices is enough to immerse the audience, transporting them back to the ambience of a Jiangnan-style garden or an ancient town. This atmosphere further allows pingtan to transcend linguistic barriers, attracting a wide range of people from diverse regions who may not understand the Wu dialect but are drawn to the charm of old Jiangnan.
“Language is a barrier, but not an insurmountable one,” Gao points out. Despite the widespread use of Putonghua, which poses challenges to the preservation of regional dialects and the promotion of traditional local theatrical arts, the troupe has historically tailored its performances within mainland China for local audiences by, for example, using

subtitles and adjusting the contents of the performances. For instance, when performing in Shanghai, more narration is used because the dialect is more widely spoken. And when performing in regions such as Northeast China or Guangdong, where the audience may not be at all familiar with the Suzhou dialect, it emphasises the musical aspects of the performances.
“In the past, they said the aroma of wine would reach even the depths of the alley. Nowadays, it’s not the same. We must take the initiative to get out of the alley,” he says. In recent years, he has adapted the popular mainland Chinese novel Blossoms into a pingtan programme titled Gao Bowen Performs Blossoms. He also collaborated with a mobile gaming company to create a scene for live performances in which players can simulate entering an antique Jiangnan teahouse and enjoy a new pingtan work titled Meeting You in a Dream, which features a pop music soundtrack. On its release, this piece quickly received more than a million views, and even attracted interest from other mobile gaming companies wanting to collaborate. All further evidence that under the guidance of the Shanghai Pingtan Troupe, tradition is no longer a burden, but rather a springboard for innovation.

上海評彈藝術傳習所(上海評彈團)成立於1951 年11月20日,是首個致力於中國評彈藝術的國 家級院團,也是中國評彈界目前最具實力的演 出團體之一。院團的宗旨是「出人、出書、走 正路」,傳承評彈藝術,弘揚民族文化。

Established on 20 November 1951, the Shanghai Pingtan Troupe is the first national pingtan troupe of its kind. It is also one of the greatest troupes in the pingtan industry today. Following its motto “Nurture talent, create new works and follow the right path”, the troupe aspires to pass on the art of pingtan to future generations and promote China's cultural heritage to the world.
Since its inception, the troupe has gathered famous pingtan masters and founders of various stylistic schools. These include Jiang Yuequan (Jiang Style), Zhang Jianting (Zhang Style), Yan Xueting (Yan Style), Yang Zhenxiong (Yang Style), Xue Xiaoqing (Xue Style), Yao Yinmei (Yao Style), Zhou Yunrui (Zhou Yunrui Style), Zhu Xueqin (Qin Style), Xu Lixian (Li Style), as well as Liu Tianyun, Yang Renlin, Zhang Hongsheng, Tang Gengliang, Wu Zian, Zhu Huizhen and more.
The troupe has developed many major productions from classics, including the full-length tanci work The Jade Dragonfly, The Pearl Pagoda, The Legend of the White Snake, The Eagle-eyed Gunslinger, Fate in Tears and Laughter, The Three Smiles, The Gilt Phoenix, The Perfect Match, Yang Naiwu, Wu Song and more. The mid-length pingtan is a unique performance style pioneered by the troupe. Original and recreated pieces include We Certainly Must Fix The Huai River, Naval Hero, How Green the Reeds Are, The Strong Army, The Song of Youth, True Sentiments and False Emotions, At the Herbal Shop, The Orphan of Zhao, Sun and Pang’s Battle of Wits, Chords of the Spring and Autumn, The Four Beauties, Lin Huiyin, Gao Bowen Performs Blossoms and more.
Over the years, the troupe has received several awards, including the Wenhua New Programme Prize (Quyi); the Performance Award and the Production Award at the China Quyi Peony Awards; the Outstanding Production Award (Repertoire) and the Performance Award at the Chinese Suzhou Pingtan Art Festival, the Gold Production Award (Mid-length pingtan) at the Chinese Suzhou Pingtan Art Festival, the Shanghai Labour Day Award and more. The troupe is also a recipient of the prestigious title from the ninth National Advanced Collective in Serving Farmers and Grassroots Cultural Construction.
Each year, the troupe holds more than 4,000 performances in China. To further promote traditional Chinese culture and arts worldwide, the troupe has also performed in over 20 countries in Europe, America, Asia and Africa. By sharing the unique artistry and charm of pingtan with the world, the troupe has been hailed locally and overseas as “the most beautiful voice from China”.

Gao Bowen is a National First-Class Performer. He is the Director of the Shanghai Pingtan Troupe, Director of the Chinese Ballad Singers Association, Vice-Chairman of the Shanghai Ballad Singers Association, and an Adjunct Professor at the Shanghai University and the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He is also a Representative Successor of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Shanghai.
He has studied under famous tanci masters such as Rao Yichen, Chen Xi’an and Zhao Kaisheng. His representative works include the full-length tanci productions The Pearl Pagoda, Wen Zhengming, The Gilt Phoenix and Eternal Regret of Dynasty Ming, the mid-length pingtan operas Lin Huiyin, Gao Bowen Performs Blossoms, The Four Beauties, and so on. He received the Production Award at the 12th China Quyi Peony Awards, the Performance Award at the eighth China Quyi Peony Awards, the Production Award at the fifth and seventh China Quyi Festivals, the Outstanding Performance Award at the first to fifth Chinese Suzhou Pingtan Art Festival. Additionally, he received the title of Shanghai’s Outstanding Artist, among others.

He is also a National First-Class Performer. He studied under famous pinghua artists Gu Hungbo, Wu Junyu and Shen Shoumei. His representative works include the full-length pinghua operas The Water Margin; the mid-length pinghua works The Legend of the Wolf Valley; and the short pinghua operas Night Walk on Langshan Mountain and Changes in the Rainy Night.
He received the Literature Award at the third China Quyi Peony Awards, the Performance Award at the eighth China Quyi Peony Awards, and the Production Award at the 10th China Quyi Peony Awards.

She received the Production Award at the 12th China Quyi Peony Awards, and the Silver and Bronze Performance Awards at the Chinese Suzhou Pingtan Art Festival. She is also one of the Top Ten Artists at the first Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai Youth Pingtan Grand Prize Competition.
Wu Jinghui is a National ClassTwo Performer who studied under tanci masters Wang Boyin and Jiang Wenlan. Her representative works include the full-length tanci works The Legend of the White Snake, The Jade Dragonfly, The Jade Goddess of Mercy, and so on. She received the Second Prize at the Nanshan Cup National Quyi New Talent Showcase, the Bronze Performance Award and Full-length Repertoire Inheritance Award at the Chinese Suzhou Pingtan Art Festival, and the Outstanding Performance Award at the Shanghai Stage Art Excellence Showcase (full-length productions).
Wang Ping is a National ClassTwo Performer who studied under tanci masters Yu Ruijun, Zhuang Zhenhua and Qin Jianguo. Her representative repertoire includes the full-length tanci works The Gilt Phoenix, Meng Lijun, Huang Taiji and Lin Ziwen.
