第五十二屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可喜可賀。
歷經五十餘年,香港藝術節已成為享譽國際的文化盛 事。今屆藝術節續放異彩,雲集約1,400名本地及海 外藝術家,帶來逾150場不同類型的表演,由音樂、 歌劇、戲曲,以至戲劇、舞蹈、跨媒體藝術和大型特 備節目等,必定是另一場令人難忘的藝術盛宴。
今屆藝術節以李察.史特勞斯的《拿索斯島的亞莉安 妮》揭開序幕,由巴伐利亞國立歌劇院獻上這齣莊諧 並重的精妙劇作,令人期待。個多月後,上海芭蕾舞
團將呈獻中國與法國聯合製作的《花樣年華》,作為 藝術節的閉幕表演。這齣精彩絕倫、中西協作的芭蕾 舞劇,正好反映香港獨特的中西創意文化根源,並彰 顯我們作為中外文化藝術交流中心的重要地位。今年 藝術節匯聚全球各地佳作,包括別具一格的「聚焦當 代阿拉伯」系列,更形豐富多采。
我對香港的文藝創意事業前景充滿信心。政府銳意竭 盡所能,鼓勵本地藝術家奮發向上,並確保他們獲 得所需和應得的表演機會。正如我在《施政報告》所 述,新成立的文創產業發展處每年會推動60個業界考 察團、海外展覽及其他文化展演活動;「電影發展基 金」和「創意智優計劃」共獲注資43億元,以支持本 港電影業;「重點演藝項目計劃」亦即將推出,協助 本地大型表演藝術創作,以及培育代表香港的國際文 化品牌。
政府會繼續與各界攜手合作,積極推動文化藝術及創 意業界的發展。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 52nd edition.
Over this past half century and more, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has grown into a celebrated international cultural event. This year promises to be another memorable Festival, featuring about 1,400 overseas and local artists in more than 150 performances across multiple genres, from music, opera and Chinese opera to theatre, dance, multi-arts and large-scale special events.
This year’s Festival opens with the Bayerische Staatsoper’s presentation of Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, a bravura mingling of high art and comedy. It closes, more than a month later, with the Sino-French coproduction of the Shanghai Ballet’s A Sigh of Love. This inspired East-West collaboration reflects Hong Kong’s singular East-West creative and cultural roots and our growing role as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. Indeed, this year’s Festival is rife with performances from all over the world, including a special Arab Arts Focus series.
I believe in Hong Kong’s creative promise, and my Government is determined to do all it can to encourage our local artists and ensure that they have the performance access they need and deserve. As I mentioned in my Policy Address, our newly established Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency will promote 60 industry missions, overseas exhibitions and other cultural showcases annually; a total of $4.3 billion will be injected into the Film Development Fund and the CreateSmart Initiative to support our film industry; and the Signature Performing Arts Programme Scheme will be launched to assist largescale, local performing arts productions and nurture the development of Hong Kong cultural brands internationally. The Government will continue to work hand in hand with relevant sectors to proactively promote the development of arts, culture and creative industries.
I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its longstanding commitment to the arts, and to the Festival’s many sponsors and donors for their generous support.

With the Festival now back in full swing, we cherish this opportunity to come together once again and appreciate the arts with you. As we celebrate the Festival’s full-scale comeback and contemplate the development of the arts in this ever-changing environment, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has played a critical role in nurturing and sustaining the performing arts scene.

走過半世紀的香港藝術節,一直為國際與本地最優秀 的表演者搭建舞台,積極促進中外文化交流。經歷了 三年疫情的洗禮,藝術節終於在第52屆再度迎來「花 樣年華」,在全面復常的狀態下再度為本地觀眾與遊 客獻上今天和明日的經典,不單讓大家可以從眾多音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇、戲曲和多媒體作品中重新細賞遺世 瑰寶,更邀來多位重量級中外大師坐鎮,陣容鼎盛、 豐富多元,足以滿足不同觀眾群體的喜好。

For more than half a century, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has provided a stage for the most outstanding local and international performers, and actively enhanced cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. After three years of the pandemic, we are delighted to come back in full force and present to local audiences and overseas visitors treasured classics of today and tomorrow. Our programme features an eclectic lineup of music, dance, theatre, Chinese opera and multimedia productions, with a range of Chinese and international legends set to command the stage. With such a rich and diverse programme, there is something to delight everyone.
This year, our ongoing support for the development of local artists provides opportunities for them to flex their creative muscles through collaborations with leading artists from all over the world. 香港藝術節 於1973年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的 文化盛事,於每年2、3月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國 際藝術家的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育 活動,致力豐富香港的文化生活。
香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2023/24財政年度預 計收入(包括第52屆香港藝術節及2024年「無限亮」) 約港幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔 總收入約12%,另外約25%需來自票房收入,約48% 則須依賴來自各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊 助和捐款。預計餘下的約15%則來自其他收入,包括 政府針對捐款和贊助收入而提供的配對資助。

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts, as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events, in February and March each year.
The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2023/24 (including the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2024 “No Limits” programme) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 12% of the Festival’s total income. Around 25% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 48% from sponsorship and donations by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching grant scheme, which matches income generated through private-sector sponsorship and donations.

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced more than 250 local productions across various genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include Table for Six on Stage, Loveless Romance, We Are Gay, The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

香港藝術節 大力投資下一代的藝術教育。「青少年之 友」成立31年來,已為逾820,000位本地中學生及大專 生提供藝術體驗活動。藝術節近年亦開展多項針對大、 中、小學生的藝術教育活動,包括由國際及本地藝術家 主持的示範講座及工作坊、學生展演、演前講座、公開 彩排以及欣賞藝術節演出。同時,通過「學生票捐助計 劃」,藝術節每年提供約10,000張半價學生票。
香港藝術節每年主辦一系列多元化並深入社區的「加料 節目」,例如電影放映、示範講座、大師班、工作坊、 座談會、後台參觀、展覽、藝人談、文化導賞團等, 鼓勵觀眾與藝術家互動接觸。
香港藝術節亦銳意將共融藝術理念拓展到社區每一角 落。由藝術節與香港賽馬會慈善信託基金聯合呈獻 的「無限亮」計劃於2019年正式開展,透過一系列的 演出及多元的教育及社區外展節目,「無限亮」致力 創造共融空間,讓不同能力人士均可以一同欣賞、參 與、擁抱藝術。
為創造更穩健的財政環境以及確保藝術節的長期可持 續性, 香港藝術節基金會 於2022年成立,旨在讓藝術 節在未來進行年度預算以外的大型特別項目。

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer), co-produced by the HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch; Richard III and The Tempest, produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with the HKAF as a co-commissioning institution; Green Snake, co-commissioned with the Shanghai International Arts Festival; Dream of the Red Chamber, co-produced with the San Francisco Opera; and Laila, a co-production of the HKAF and the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.
The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. During the past 31 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached more than 820,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 halfprice student tickets each year.
The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions and guided cultural tours.
The HKAF actively promotes inclusion via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.
To provide greater financial security and long-term sustainability for the Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation was officially launched in 2022. Donations to the Foundation will be used towards enabling the Festival to present in the future large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for.

韓經 arte 愛樂樂團 Hankyung arte Philharmonic
2015年9月,韓經arte愛樂樂團由《韓國經濟日 報》創立,以「成為文化與經濟之間的橋樑」為 口號,迅速成為南韓的頂尖樂團之一。他們以充 滿精力和青春活力的演出而聞名,現時每年舉辦 逾三十場音樂會。
該樂團的音樂會定期在韓國兩個古典音樂電 視頻道之一的韓經arte電視頻道上播出,讓觀衆 在音樂廳外都能重温樂團的精采演出。
自創立以來,兩位音樂總監金蘭世( 금난새 ) 及洪錫元一直帶領樂團。樂團亦定期與南韓的頂 尖指揮家與獨奏家合作,例如成沶妍、林憲正和 孫旻秀。吳懷世現為樂團的首席客席指揮。
韓經arte愛樂樂團致力培養下一代音樂家。
在韓國教育部及現代汽車鄭夢九協會的支持下, 樂團為全國中學生提供教材,以激發、培養和為 年輕藝術家與音樂愛好者開展音樂路。
除了每年主打的古典音樂演出、教育活動及 社區節目外,樂團亦定期獲邀參加音樂活動或節 慶表演,如首爾藝術中心日場音樂會系列和樂天 音樂廳古典革新音樂節,並與韓國國家歌劇院和 韓國國家合唱團等合作。
The Hankyung arte Philharmonic quickly established itself as one of the leading orchestras in South Korea after its foundation by the Korea Economic Daily in September 2015 under the slogan “A Bridge Between Culture and Economy”. Renowned for its energetic and youthful performances, the orchestra currently presents more than 30 concerts annually.
The orchestra’s concerts are regularly broadcasted on the Hankyung arte TV channel—one of two classical music TV channels in South Korea— allowing audiences to relive the wonders of the orchestra’s live performances beyond the concert hall.
Since its founding, the Hankyung arte Philharmonic has been led by the music directors Nanse Gum and Seok-won Hong. The orchestra has also regularly performed with some of South Korea’s leading conductors and soloists such as Shi-Yeon Sung, Heon-Jeong Lim and Minsoo Sohn. Wilson Ng is currently the Principal Guest Conductor of the Hankyung arte Philharmonic.
The Hankyung arte Philharmonic is committed to inspiring the next generation of musicians. With the support of South Korea’s Ministry of Education and the Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation, it has supplied middle and high schools nationwide with educational materials to inspire, nurture and create musical pathways for young artists and music lovers.
Apart from its annual schedule of core classical performances, education activities and community programmes, the Hankyung arte Philharmonic is regularly invited to perform at music events and festivals such as the Seoul Arts Center Matinee Concert Series and the Lotte Concert Hall’s Classic Revolution festival, and collaborations with, among others, the Korean National Opera and the National Chorus of Korea.

吳懷世被《尚流》雜誌譽為「世界上最享負盛名 的青年指揮家之一」,他自2012年起多次與香港 藝術節合作。在2021年,他與首爾愛樂樂團參演 了第49屆藝術節的節目,其後在2023年的藝術 節指揮香港管弦樂團兩場音樂會。
吳懷世最近獲任命為韓經arte愛樂樂團的首 席客席指揮,他將帶領樂團在首爾演出多場音樂會 及在韓國其他主要城市巡演,而他們所有的演出均 由韓經arte電視頻道直播。吳懷世在2023/2024年 樂季的其他重點演出包括他與瑞士洛桑室內樂團、 札幌交響樂團、北京國家大劇院管弦樂團的首次 演出,並再次與統營音樂節樂團及圖魯茲首都樂團 合作。最近,由他指揮的圖魯茲首都樂團與曼陀 鈴演奏家馬提諾合作錄音,由法國 Naïve 唱片公司 發行。

Conductor Wilson Ng
Described by Tatler Asia as “one of the world’s most acclaimed young conductors”, Wilson Ng has had a longstanding relationship with the Hong Kong Arts Festival since 2012. In 2021, he led the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra for a performance at the 49th HKAF. In 2023, he returned to the HKAF and conducted the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra again for another two performances.
Recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Hankyung arte Philharmonic, Ng will lead the orchestra for several concerts in Seoul and around South Korea. All performances will be broadcast live on Hankyung arte TV. Other highlights of the 2023/24 season include debuts with Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, and the China NCPA Orchestra in Beijing. Ng will also return to the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra and the Orchestra National du Capitole de Toulouse, where he and mandolinist Julien Martineau collaborated on a recently released recording under the French label Naïve.
Born in Hong Kong and educated in Europe, Ng won several awards at the Mahler, Sir Georg Solti and Evgeny Svetlanov conducting competitions. In 2018, Ng was named Associate Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. He was only 28 years old at the time and became the youngest conductor ever appointed by the orchestra. He also frequently serves as a guest conductor for other major Korean ensembles, including the KBS Symphony and the Korean National Symphony orchestras.
In 2015, Ng founded the Gustav Mahler Orchestra in Hong Kong and launched “Musicians without Borders”—an innovative project for audiences to enjoy immersive musical experiences. He also co-founded the aboutMusic Foundation to provide underprivileged students in Hong Kong with free international-level music education. Additionally, Ng is a member of the Artistic Advisory Board of the School of Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.
Although he is deeply familiar with the traditional Western canon, Ng is a passionate champion of Asian composers, including Ye Xiaogang, Unsuk Chin, Tōru Takemitsu and Doming Lam. In 2019, he conducted the opening concert of the Beijing Modern Music Festival, and in 2023, returned to lead its closing performance.

普羅科菲耶夫具有極其生動的想像力,以至 於是他最抽象的作品,似乎都在娓娓訴說故 事,其交響曲、奏鳴曲和協奏曲便是最佳例 子。他音樂敍事的精湛造詣,也在其芭蕾舞 劇如《羅密歐與茱麗葉》的成功中可見一斑。
說到作曲家另一部為兒童而作的作品, 則是1935年的《兒童音樂》,箇中十二首鋼 琴曲盡顯童心,跟舒曼等前人之作遙相呼 應。1936年,普羅科菲耶夫返俄未幾,便 欣然接受莫斯科中央兒童劇院的委約,創作 《彼得與狼》。原作記述一名年輕的蘇聯少 年先鋒明辨是非,敢與成年人對着幹,唯作 曲家對此不甚喜歡,遂將故事改成敍述一個 名叫彼得的小男孩,如何憑一己智謀捕獲野 狼。這樣既保留原作的元素,彼得英勇的表 現又與當時蘇聯社會對青年的期望形象不謀 而合。
《彼得與狼》本來的目的乃是向年輕聽眾 介紹樂團中的樂器,所以普羅科菲耶夫除了 以音樂塑造每個角色,更以特定樂器象徵個 別角色:長笛演奏小鳥、雙簧管飾演鴨子、 單簧管代表花貓、來勢洶洶的圓號是大灰 狼、巴松管象徵爺爺、木管樂器與小號演繹 獵人,而弦樂組則屬彼得本人。雖然此作首 演未捷,卻迅速廣受歡迎,成為作曲家最成 功的作品之一。
Sergei Prokofiev had an extremely vivid imagination so that even his most abstract compositions such as the symphonies, sonatas and concertos all seem to be telling a story. The success of his ballets, such as Romeo and Juliet, attest to the wonderful way he could create a narrative in music.
The only other work of his which is specifically for children is his Music for Children, a set of 12 piano pieces from 1935. These demonstrate that, like Schumann and others before him, Prokofiev had not forgotten his childhood. He was delighted, shortly after his return to Russia in 1936, to receive a commission to write a piece for the Central Children’s Theatre in Moscow. The original text, about a young Soviet Pioneer who puts matters right by standing up to an adult, was not to the composer’s liking, so he wrote his own story, about a young boy, Peter, who, by guile and resourcefulness, captures a wolf. Elements of the original story remain, with the bravery of the young Peter resonating with the then Soviet ideas of how youth should behave.
The original intention of Peter and the Wolf was to introduce the instruments of the orchestra to the young audience, and Prokofiev depicts the various characters, not only musically but by using specific instruments for each— the bird by the flute, the duck by the oboe, the cat by the clarinet, the wolf by menacing horns, the grandfather by the bassoon, the hunters by woodwind instruments and trumpets, and Peter himself by the strings. After a first performance which made little impression, the work soon became popular and has become one of Prokofiev’s most successful compositions.

林樂培的音樂創作嫻熟,創作整體與 表現手法富含中樂底蘊,同時糅合當時在西 方樂壇前衛的技藝,令作品具有獨特韻味及 力量。例如為兒童創作的鋼琴作品《舅舅組 曲》,便流露其敏銳樂思,箇中技法靈巧生 動,媲美舒曼和普羅科菲耶夫的同類作品。
另一首近乎傳統風格的樂曲《春江花月 夜》秀麗如畫,巧以鋼琴韻律模仿中國器樂 聲響。《謝灶君》構思源自中國傳統習俗,卻 採用西洋樂團為主要配器,仿摹中樂聲響, 並加入中國笛子。他曾創作許多為中樂團而 作的樂曲,如抒情的《秋決》,令人印象難 忘。
林樂培不時糅合中西樂器創作,論乎作 曲家妙想奇思之致,便要數其為1979年國際 兒童年創作的《昆蟲世界》。此曲共有五個部 分,分別描述蜜蜂、蠶蟲、蜻蜓、蝴蝶和其 他昆蟲,箇中描繪活靈活現,喚起聽者無窮 想像,象徵大自然一片盎然。閤眼聆聽,你 將感受每種昆蟲的曼妙姿采。
林樂培於1926年在澳門出生,他來港 後協助創立中英管弦樂團(香港管弦樂團前 身)。他曾於荷里活工作,後來返回香港在電 台及電視台工作。他亦曾任教於香港大學音 樂系,並於2020年獲香港演藝學院頒發榮譽 博士學位。

Doming Lam was a composer known as the “The Father of New Music in Hong Kong” whose works combined traditional Chinese melodies with the avant-garde.
Lam’s mature music is always fundamentally Chinese in outlook and expression, but gains its unique flavour and power from the ways in which he incorporated what were then avant-garde Western techniques into the mix. The strength of his musical imagination and the technique he used to express this can even be heard in such works as his Uncle Suite for piano, a set of pieces for children which can stand alongside those of Schumann and Prokofiev, for example.
Another almost traditional type of piano piece is his Moonlight over Spring River, which is highly pictorial and evocative of the sounds and effects of Chinese instruments on the piano. Thanksgiving to Joe Kwan, the Kitchen God for Western orchestra again is thoroughly Chinese in conception, but uses a highly enriched palette through its evocation of traditional Chinese instruments and his use of dizi. Many of his works were for Chinese orchestra, such as the highly impressive and expressive Autumn Execution.
He often used Western and Chinese instruments in combination. His highly developed imagination can be heard in The Insect World, written in 1979 for the International Year of the Child, and his portrayal of each of the insects is intended to awaken the listener’s imagination. Comprised of five sections dedicated to bees, silkworms, dragonflies, butterflies and other insects, The Insect World paints a picture of little creatures living in harmony. If you close your eyes when you hear the music, you will enjoy all the colours and grace of each insect.
Lam was born in Macau in 1926. He helped found the Sino-British Orchestra—the forerunner of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. He spent some time working in Hollywood but then returned to Hong Kong to work for the radio and TV station. Lam taught at the Music Department of the University of Hong Kong, and in 2020 The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts awarded him an honorary doctorate.

韓經arte愛樂樂團成立年僅八年卻不容小 覷,這隊由《韓國經濟日報》創立的管弦 樂團,除充滿活力的現場演出外,更有自 家電視頻道全天候播放古典樂音樂會,在 韓國打響名堂。我們邀請了與樂團多次合 作的知名指揮吳懷世受訪,發掘此樂團的 魅力所在。
The eight-year-old Hankyung arte Philharmonic may have a somewhat concise portfolio, but its audience throughout South Korea is anything but concise. After being founded by the Korea Economic Daily, the orchestra quickly became a household name throughout its home country, not only due to its energetic live performances but also because it operates a television channel that broadcasts classical concerts around the clock. Ahead of Hankyung’s appearances at the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival, we caught up with renowned Hong Kong-born conductor Wilson Ng to discuss the power and influence of the orchestra, which he has collaborated with on multiple occasions.

Ng notes that Hankyung, which has always been dedicated to promoting classical music, has not only catered to existing listeners, but also always aspired to widen the audience base. As a privately owned orchestra inaugurated in 2015, Hankyung became so popular that all of its concerts during the past eight years have been fully booked. And those unable to see the orchestra in person have benefited from its paid television channel arte TV, which presents concerts by Hankyung

親子及交響兩場音樂會均由吳懷世指 揮,前者將演奏《彼得與狼》與香港作曲家 林樂培的《昆蟲世界》。吳懷世指《昆蟲世 界》因編制較大,較少上演,觀眾難得有機 會欣賞。而交響音樂會則會演奏中國作曲家 葉小綱的《消失的銀杏》,吳懷世特別珍惜指 揮中國作曲家作品的機會,因能代表自己的 身份。他認為葉小綱的作品帶中國韻味,其 和聲卻又是世界性的,值得欣賞。
在交響音樂會中,樂團將與鋼琴家孫旻 秀合作。吳懷世表示:「他對音樂非常細膩認 真,琴音充滿哲學意境……他的音樂十分吸 引我。」選曲拉赫曼尼諾夫的D小調第三鋼琴 協奏曲,作品30,因為孫旻秀的高徒任奫燦 正是憑此曲在2022年美國范.克萊本國際鋼 琴比賽奪得金獎。
2024年韓經arte愛樂樂團首度來港演 出,屆時香港觀眾能親身欣賞他們嚴謹認真 的演奏,一睹韓國新生冒起樂團之風采。

and other orchestras from around the world. Ng notes that Hankyung is in a unique position to also have the TV channel, given the high production costs of pre-recorded concert programmes around the world.
Hankyung also regularly organises concerts that are tailored for specific types of audiences, such as concerts to thank medical staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ng has conducted the orchestra at concerts for the fire service, the police, and their families. Usually at these concerts, the orchestra performs celebratory and renowned works that are specially chosen for the occasions.
Hankyung is giving three performances at the 52nd HKAF, including playing alongside Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company at Le Corsaire, a Family Concert and a Philharmonic Concert, which are all regular programmes of the ensemble. The orchestra has regularly appeared with various ballet troupes, and many of its South Korean followers will recall when Hankyung presented Peter and the Wolf with sand painting at a Family Concert, not to mention its sought-after Philharmonic Concert.
Ng will be conducting Hankyung at the Family Concert and Philharmonic Concert. The Family Concert will feature the famous Peter and the Wolf and a symphonic work called The Insect World, created by the late Hong Kong composer Doming Lam. The conductor points out that The Insect World, in particular, will be an exceptional piece for the local audience to experience live due to its extensive instrumentation. Meanwhile, the audience at the Philharmonic Concert will be treated to a performance of The Faint Ginkgo by Ye Xiaogang, a Chinese composer. Ng says he treasures opportunities to perform Chinese composers’ works and believes the piece by Ye perfectly captures the beauty of Chinese culture, adding that the harmonies in Ye’s works resonate with global audiences.
Joining Hankyung at the Philharmonic Concert is pianist Minsoo Sohn, “whose renditions have been exquisite and earnest, characterised by a philosophical execution of notes that is always intriguing,” says Ng. The pianist will play Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3 in D minor, Op 30, the piece that won his protégé Yunchan Lim the Gold Medal at the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
At Hankyung’s 2024 HKAF appearances, local audiences can expect brilliant performances from an emerging orchestra playing with great.

Narrator Lai Ying
Hong Kong singer-actress Lai Ying is active in music, films, TV shows and online channels. She is famed for her petite figure, and sincere and funny personality. Her self-assigned nickname, “a girl who doesn’t look good from any angle”, has captured the attention of audiences.
Lai Ying made her debut as a singer-songwriter in 2020, performing Japanese pop music. In the same year, she was nominated as the Discovery of the Year at Chill Club Chart Award Presentation 20/21, and was awarded the same prize at the Metro Radio Hits Music Awards 2021. Lai Ying has a passion for Japanese culture and loves performing covers of Japanese songs, and has released Japanese versions of some of her songs.
Lai Ying was included among the top five female singers at Chill Club Chart Award Presentation 22/23. She was also selected by Spotify EQUAL to make an appearance on the big screen at Times Square in New York in February the same year. A singer before she becomes an actress, she has appeared in films such as Mama’s Affair, Everyphone Everywhere and The Lyricist Wannabe.

《星空》曾獲2008年北京夏季奧運會開幕禮 選奏。葉小綱生於上海,在北京中央音樂學 院學習,後來負笈紐約伊士曼音樂學院,師 從阿歷山大.郭爾。目前則在其母校中央音 樂學院教授作曲。
上海音樂周及國家藝術基金委約他創作 《消失的銀杏》,他這樣談起此作:「銀杏在 地球上生存了數十億年,是種古老的植物, 美麗而神秘,使我印象深刻。」他思索在氣候 變化加劇下,銀杏能否存活下去,所以希望 以此曲喚起大眾關注。《消失的銀杏》由墨爾 本交響樂團於2021年首演。
Ye Xiaogang’s compositions cover many genres, including symphonies, concertos, vocal works and chamber music. His work Starry Sky was performed at the opening of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Born in Shanghai, Ye studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and then at the Eastman School of Music in New York, where one of his teachers was Alexander Goehr. He now teaches composition at the Central Conservatory in Beijing.
The composer says of his composition The Faint Ginkgo, which was commissioned by Shanghai Music Week and the China National Arts Fund: “Ginkgo is an ancient plant that has survived billions of years on our planet. I’ve often been impressed by its beauty and mystery.” He wonders whether it will survive the effects of climate change and hopes his piece will help raise people’s concerns about this. The piece had its world premiere performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2021.

柴可夫斯基最著名的作品包括他最後創作的 三首交響曲、他為鋼琴和小提琴創作的協奏 曲、他的歌劇作品《尤金.奧尼金》及《黑 桃皇后》、芭蕾舞劇《胡桃夾子》、《天鵝湖》 及《睡美人》,還有他為鋼琴創作的作品《季 節》。其中第六交響曲的創作歷程頗為曲折: 調性非但由原本降E大調突然改為B小調,樂 章編排也另闢蹊徑,先讓三個快速的樂章接 續鋪墊,迎來哀戚難休的慢板終章。作曲家 曾跟弟弟談及此作本為標題音樂,最終卻決 定隱瞞意圖,讓動人的音樂為自己說話。
巴松管在低處徘徊,為此曲吹響陰沉開 局。第一樂章的快板戰戰兢兢,卻出現作曲 家筆下其中一段最能安慰心靈的主題旋律。
第二和第三樂章舞蹈翩然優雅,每個小節卻 以異於平常的五拍貫穿,接續的進行曲明媚 輕快,詎料終章又再度愁緒作序,緩然復陷 深谷。縱然另一段和煦旋律充作強大撫慰, 樂曲旋即折返至小調,使作品走向悲愴,陰 沉的巴松管再度響起,直至寂寥與沉痛收結 全曲。
Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include his final three symphonies, his concertos for piano and for violin, his operas, such as Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades, his ballets—The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty—and works for piano such as The Seasons. His final symphony began life as a work in E-flat Major, a key he suddenly abandoned and instead composed the work in B minor, with its unusual scheme of three fast movements and ending with a tragic adagio. Much has been made of the fact that he told his brother that there was a programme to the work, but in the end Tchaikovsky decided not to divulge what this was and to let the music speak for itself, which it most eloquently does.
It begins in the depths, in the bassoons, and at the end of the last movement sinks back into the depths again. In between, the allegro of the first movement is nervously excited, but contains one of the composer’s most consoling melodies, while the middle two movements are an elegant dance (in an unusual five beats per bar) and a brisk march. The final movement begins tragically, but brings another powerful consoling melody. However, this returns in the minor, adding to the sense of tragedy, before the work comes to its quiet and sombre conclusion.

拉赫曼尼諾夫自小跟隨母親學習音樂,隨後 入讀聖彼得堡音樂學院,最終前往莫斯科音 樂學院深造,師從塔涅耶夫和阿連斯基。他 深受柴可夫斯基及林姆斯基-高沙可夫的影 響,旋即發展出獨一無二的音樂語彙。1917 年俄國革命後,許多流亡海外的俄人曾評 論,拉赫曼尼諾夫的音樂真正反映了俄國靈 魂。
拉赫曼尼諾夫或許是二十世紀最傑出的 鋼琴家及作曲家。1890年代末,他對作曲失 去信心,一蹶不振,直至與研究催眠術的尼 古拉.達爾醫生數度交談,終於迎來蓬勃的 創作顛峰期。1900年代,他先後交出大提琴 奏鳴曲、第二及第三鋼琴協奏曲和第二交響 曲。拉赫曼尼諾夫更以飛快速度寫成第三鋼 琴協奏曲,且於1909年從歐洲赴美作首度巡 演前,僅憑一台靜音鋼琴鍵盤在航程期間完 成作品的最後潤飾與練習。由於印刷樂譜需 時,樂師最終只能以手抄分部樂譜完成作品 首演。作品再度登場時,由馬勒執棒指揮, 非但演繹一絲不苟,指揮聯同樂手日夜排 練,連彩排超出正常時間亦毫無怨言,使拉 赫曼尼諾夫深受感動。
第一樂章以看似簡單的主題開局,隨後 迎上情緒高峰。間奏曲基本上是一組變奏, 涵蓋舞蹈、沉思與激昂的情緒。終曲則以侏 儒的歡樂漫舞作序,及至歷經迥異多舛的波 瀾後,恢宏的旋律才宣告樂曲步向光彩絢麗 的尾聲。在音樂性和鋼琴技藝上,此曲無疑 都屬作曲家最具挑戰性的作品之一,正好為 造詣超群和理解音樂的鋼琴家度身訂造。

Rachmaninov gained his musical education from his mother, and then at the St Petersburg Conservatory and finally the Moscow Conservatory, studying with Taneyev and Arensky. Influenced by Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, he soon developed his own distinctive mode of expression. Many Russian exiles abroad after the 1917 revolution remarked that Rachmaninov’s music truly reflected the Russian soul.
Probably the most outstanding pianist-composer of the 20th century, Rachmaninov suffered a loss of confidence in his ability to compose towards the end of the 1890s, but, after conversations with a Dr Nikoleg Dahl, who was known to be interested in hypnotism, he entered a prolific number of years in the 1900s, during which he produced his cello sonata, the second and third piano concerto, and the second symphony. The third piano concerto was written at great speed for performance during his first tour of America in 1909, and he put the finishing touches to it and practised it during the sea voyage from Europe, on a silent piano keyboard. The first performance took place using hand-copied parts, as there had been no time to print it. When the work was performed a second time, Gustav Mahler conducted and the composer was highly impressed with Mahler’s meticulous attention to detail, and to his taking the rehearsal well beyond the normal finishing time—with no complaints from members of the orchestra.
The first movement begins with a deceptively simple theme and rises to heights of passion, while the intermezzo is basically a set of variations including dance and contemplation as well as high emotion. The finale starts out like some gnome’s dance of delight, but passes through many different emotions before the final grand melody sets the seal on a wonderful musical journey. This is one of Rachmaninov’s most musically and pianistically challenging works, but is a wonderful vehicle for those with the right technical prowess and musical understanding.

Piano Soloist Minsoo Sohn
Described by The New York Times as “a genuine artist, with a thoughtfully conceived and poetic interpretation” and The Boston Globe as “born to play the piano”, Minsoo Sohn is a Korean-American pianist known for his musical intelligence and masterful virtuosity—qualities that have earned him acclaim throughout the United States, Canada and South Korea. His readings of the works of Bach and Beethoven in particular have placed him among the elite in this repertoire, and the inspired ingenuity of his orchestral performances have earned him many accolades. Sohn has toured extensively throughout North and South America, Europe, Israel and South Korea.
Sohn is particularly noted for his interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, with The New York Times praising his Honens-label recording of the work as a “beautifully articulated, radiant interpretation”, including it among its top classical recordings of 2011. His recordings have also received critical acclaim from The New Yorker magazine, Gramophone, the Calgary Herald and the Toronto Star, among others.
Sohn owes much of his success to his mentors, Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun, with whom he studied with at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. After teaching at Michigan State University, Sohn returned to South Korea where he became a sought-after performer and instructor at the Korean National University of Arts. He has also served on the jury at prominent international piano competitions including Honens, Top of the World and the Busoni Competition.
Sohn continues to expand his reputation as a teacher, performer and musical thinker. In autumn 2023, Sohn joined the piano faculty at the New England Conservatory of Music.
