I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

在 1 9 1 7 年俄國革命百年之際,《三個女人搞革
This year marks the hundredth anniversary of the Russian Revolution of 1917. Burning bright in the forest of the night addresses this anniversary and some of its potential repercussions, both artistic and political, in today’s world. It is hard to ignore the similarity of many of the problems faced by the majority of the world’s population a hundred years ago to those we face today. It may be a simplistic view, but the conflicts arising from inequality, redistribution of wealth, workers’ rights and the fight against new forms of exploitation seem just as relevant today as they were in 1917.
命》不僅是對該運動的紀念,也讓我們聽到了 其在當今世界的隱隱迴響,不論是藝術還是政 治方面。一百年前,世上大多數人面臨的眾多 問題,竟與我們今日所面對的如出一轍,相似 得令人難以忽視。也許這樣說有過於簡化之嫌, 但不平等、財富再分配、工人權益,以及反對 新形式剝削的鬥爭,這些問題與其帶來的衝突, 即使在今天看來,也與 1917 年時一樣切實和重 要。 《三個女人搞革命》以三位當代女性的故事為 中心。她們的生活經歷截然不同,卻都以某種 形式受俄國革命的深遠影響。三個故事分別採 用三種表演模式:木偶人有一天去觀看了一場 戲劇,而劇中的人物又去看了一場電影。整部 作品如同一個巨大的俄羅斯娃娃,一個故事嵌 套着另一個,且每個故事彼此影響。藝術像革 命一樣,可以創造出很多我們之前無法看到、 卻可能存在的世界。俄國革命後,先鋒派藝術 蓬勃興起,追求重述無法以其他方式講述的事 物。我們又是否能夠帶着謙卑的態度做到同樣 的事情?大型虛構作品的創作,是否烏托邦式 行為?

Burning bright... is a work composed of stories centred on the lives of three contemporary women, whose experiences are intersected by the Russian Revolution in very different ways. The narration uses three different formats for each section. It is a work with puppets, who one day set off to see a play, whose characters are going to see a film. The story is like a big Russian doll made up of fictions within fictions, each of which changes the others. Art, like revolution, creates possible worlds which were not visible before. Are we able to invoke— with a suitable dose of humility—the explosive artistic avant-garde which followed the Russian Revolution and which aspired to recount things that could not be recounted any other way? Is the creation of mega-fictions a utopian action?

Burning bright... takes as its inspiration the Soviet revolutionary and feminist Alexandra Kollontai, and some of her concerns about the body, liberty, sexuality and how capitalist societies model women’s identities to suit their own convenience. Kollontai is a relatively obscure figure of the Russian Revolution, like many women involved in revolutions around the world. After the triumphant events of 1917, a series of radical transformations took place at all levels of society, and her influence was felt in areas such as divorce, women’s suffrage, legal abortion, same-sex unions and more. But above all, the idea of the body as a revolutionary field of action took root.

Amongst other things, Burning bright... asks questions about how capitalism controls bodies, and particularly how the control of women’s bodies is representative of the more complex control of one class over another. The bodies of the actors are shown at different scales, with distinct power relationships created in each format. The body is no longer just a battlefield; it becomes a personal theme park, for which you have to pay to enter. 3 A personal diversion: I am about 8 or 9 years old, living with my family in secrecy, using false names, and moving from place to place in Buenos Aires, like a bad spy movie, because my parents are left-wing political militants and there is still a military dictatorship in Argentina. At that time, while listening to the conversations of adults, I discovered a history for the first time: after the 1917 revolution, many Russians immigrated to northern Argentina, where some of them intended to found utopian colonies in the forest. Someone mentioned that one of these colonies was for women only. The image of these socialist Amazonians creating an alternative society in the middle of the crazy Latin American forest at the beginning of the 20th century has always remained engraved on my mind.

A few years ago, I became father to a little girl, and my perception of how a woman’s identity is carved out by capitalism today became a daily and far from abstract concern. As a symptom of the age, in recent years feminism has once more become one of the clearest, most active and revolutionary of movements in Latin America. 4 In the process of constructing Burning bright..., which took around two years, we talked to revolutionaries, both past and present, and to femi nists organising new social movements in unlikely places. We travelled to the forests of northern Argentina in search of the traces of the Russian immigrants of a hundred years ago, and we also attended anniversary events, for and against the revolution. We saw how the far-right was winning elections all over the world, and we found that Eisenstein had been a theatre director before turning to cinema, and his last theatrical work had included showing a film. The characters of Burning bright... are transformed by watching the lives of other people in works of art, thinking about them, and starting to wonder whether they themselves want to be spectators or protagonists in History. In a world filled with terrible injustices, the possibility for them to find radical change, in society and in their own lives, like a crouc hing tiger which bursts into flames, continues to illuminate and give hope in the darkest of places. The 1917 Bolshevik Revolution ranks amongst the epic tales of human civilization. It lifted Russia’s peasants out of centuries of agrarian feudalism, spawned a radical social, political and economic ideology, and launched a superpower, not to mention a slew of films and novels celebrating its most romantic and tragic threads. The Bolsheviks’ ideals died an inglorious death (even the Kremlin ignored the centenary), yet they can still prove seductive, as evidenced in the latest work of Argentine theatre director Mariano Pensotti. Burning bright in the forest of the night considers the contemporary relevance of one of Communism’s most rebellious thinkers, the Marxist feminist Alexandra Kollontai (1872–1952). Yet Pensotti, who grew up during Argentina’s Dirty War and the rise of military dictatorships across South America, has revolution in his blood, too, and it informs the theatre he creates: his unclassifiable, interdisciplinary, exorbitant storytelling is begging to overthrow theatrical form itself.

Burning bright… is an object lesson in Pensotti’s theatre practice, forged over two decades and 20 plays that resist containment in any one genre. The piece tells three stories in one, using a trio of narrative planes to create different perspectives on the precarious state of feminism in the 21st century. In each of the triptych’s chapters, women’s bodies and the social and political realities they are trying to confront are seen through a progressively magnifying lens, from the make-believe of marionettes, to the corporal reality of live theatre and film’s close-up gaze. As if he were also taking a page from the Russian Formalists, who upended literary criticism at the time of the Bolshevik Revolution by prioritizing text over authorial intent, Pensotti allows his stories to be defined as much by the forms they take as by any predetermined narrative. The women of Burning bright... derive purpose from casual encounters with works of art narrating stories similar to their own, just as chance and accident are given free rein in Pensotti’s other work. immersive works set in an apartment building and on a city street, respectively, allowing audiences to experience at their choosing the everyday stories taking place in multiple locations around them. In others, text is written and performed live with audience participation, as in Sometimes I think I see you, which was created in train stations by writers observing travellers, who in turn could influence the texts being written about them. Still other works relentlessly attempt to recast the past and its mythologies through a multitude of stories and characters. Pensotti’s expansive vision finds inspiration in many voices (he has collaborated with close to 40 writers, including Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek) and sources as diverse as a caché of discarded photos, his father’s own revolutionary activities, James Joyce’s The Dead, and Jean-Luc Godard’s La Chinoise, a film which encapsulates Pensotti’s deep engagement with both cinema and revolution as structures of being in the world. His prolific theatre is to be understood not only within the context of

the Digital Age’s profusion of stories, images and performers, but as an extended interrogation of the porosity of fiction and reality, where the codes of TV, film and advertising are powerful purveyors of identity. Such extravagant storytelling, as well as the demanding collaborative work it requires with the actors of Grupo Marea, have earned the 45-year old director an enviable international stature. Where he came from to get there is hinted at in one of his most toured works; The past is a grotesque animal is a Balzacian homage to his generation of Argentines who came of age at the brink of the economic crisis of the late 1990s and early 2000s, performed in four intercommunicating sets of a rotating plywood stage. If identity is a narrative construct, it is forged here in the collective experience of 20- and 30-somethings for whom the social and political struggles of their parents are a haunting reminder of what they have yet to accomplish themselves.

In Burning bright in the forest of the night, Pensotti proposes an agitator for our times: Kollontai’s views on women’s oppression by capitalist systems have found expression in the #MeToo movement’s exposing of workplace sexual harassment, while her Marxist positions legitimise criticism of the movement’s under-representation of minority women. The title’s reference to William Blake’s awestruck portrait of power’s contrasting forces, beauty and strength, suggests that Pensotti is himself an ardent admirer of women’s marshalling of both to overturn convention and disrupt order. Make no mistake, Pensotti does not call for political resistance as artists from the former USSR still must and do, but if revolution demands immoderation, his theatre throws down a barely restrained challenge to orthodoxies of form and urges us all to play a role, in theatre as in life. Mariano Pensotti is an Argentine author and theatre director. He studied cinema, visual arts and theatre in Buenos Aires, Spain and Italy. His work divides into two directions. The first is stage performances based on his own literary texts and developed through direct work with actors. In parallel, he produces site-specific performances, with the intent to create a contrast between fiction and reality by performing fiction works in public spaces. In theatre, as an author and director he created more than 15 performances in the past 12 years. Recently, he worked on Diamante for Ruhrtriennale 2018. In theatre, she has worked under the direction of Lola Arias in Poses para dormir (2004), Sueño con revolver (2007) and Temporariamente agotado (2005). She also worked with Romina Paula in Fiktionland (2011). In film, she has performed in XXY (2007) and El niño Pez (Lucia Puenzo, 2009), Amorosa soledad (Martin Carranza and Victoria Galardi, 2008), Glue (Alexis Dos Santos, 2006), Medianeras (Gustavo Taretto, 2011), La mujer sin cabeza (Lucrecia Martel, 2008), Días de Vinilo (Gabriel Nesci, 2012) and Voley (Martin Piroyansky, 2015).

A former lawyer and lifeguard, he began his training with Alejandro Catalan, Guillermo Angelleli and Javier Daulte. In 2005, he co-founded the company El Silencio, with which he performed in three plays in Buenos Aires, Europe and South America. He has also appeared in Ala de Criados (2009). In film, he has worked on Un mundo misterioso (2011), Secuestro y Muerte (2010), Villegas (2012), Cetáceos (2017), La Cordillera (2017), Jauja (2014), Como Funcionan Casi Todas las Cosas (2015), El Jugador (2017) and El Aprendiz (2016), among others.

In her work with Grupo Marea, she has designed sets and costumes for diverse productions in theatre, site-specific performances and installations in Argentina and many countries around the world. She has also collaborated with Argentinian directors and companies, including Grupo Krapp, Lola Arias, Pablo Messiez, Agostina López, Lisandro Rodriguez, Matías Feldman, Ariel Farace, Diana Szeinblum, Carlos Casella, Ana Frenkel, Román Podolsky, Claudio Tolcachir and Julio Chávez. She was technical director of the fourth and fifth Buenos Aires International Festival, Bienal de Performance 2015 and 2017 and Espacios Revelados in Santiago, Chile. She won the Trinidad Guevara Award in 2011 for her set design for The past is a grotesque animal (Mariano Pensotti), Premios Teatro del Mundo 2013 for Cineastas (Pensotti) and Melancolia y Manifestaciones (Lola Arias), and was nominated for the Florencio Sanchez Award 2012 for La laguna (Agostina López).

For the last 15 years, he has also composed and designed music for theatre and dance pieces, films and audio-visual work, and installations with artists such as El Descueve, Mariano Pensotti, Carlos Casella, Julio Chávez, Federico León, Martín Rejtman, Andrés Di Tella, Javier Daulte, Santiago Loza and Agustín Alezzo, among others.

Since 1992, he has worked as a technician, operator and lighting assistant. Since 1997, he has worked exclusively on his own designs for opera, theatre and dance at Argentinean and foreign theatres. Between 2000 and 2003, he attended the Institut Supérieur des Techniques du Spectacle (Avignon, France). His design on Monteverdi Metodo Belico (El Periférico de Objetos, 1999) was awarded with the Trinidad Guevara Award by the government of Buenos Aires and the UBA Theatre of the World. He won similar accolades for his work on Los Murmullos (2002) and Dolor Exquisito (2008). Several of his designs were nominated for the ACE Awards. Since 2005, he has worked as an instructor in undergraduate lighting design at the National University of the Arts (Buenos Aires), at the Municipal School of Dramatic Arts, and as technical advisor for the Instituto Nacional de Teatro and the Consejo Federal de Inversiones.
