衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年邁向第4 7屆。今屆藝 術節陣容鼎盛,共有超過1700名來自香港和世 界各地的藝術家傾力演出,為觀眾帶來近1 7 0 場精彩表演。 今年藝術節的節目多姿多彩,當代及古典音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇等不同形式的藝術表演共冶一 爐。每個節目從幕後製作到台前演出,均盡顯 精湛的藝術造詣和超凡的想像力。 我很高興知道最近完成活化的中區警署建築 群,即現在的大館古蹟及藝術館,會在兩個周 末呈獻約5 0場舞蹈表演,供公眾免費入場觀 賞。大家更有機會一起參與在大館的檢閱廣 場、監獄操場,甚至是監獄囚室進行的表演節 目。牛棚藝術村亦會打造為藝術共生創造社, 首度成為藝術節發展作品的平台,場內設有不 同創意領域的工作坊,觀眾並可以欣賞一些創 作中的作品,感受藝術家的多元創意。 除了精彩表演,藝術節亦一如以往,悉心籌備 各項教育和外展活動,致力培育本地藝術人 才。「香港藝術節青少年之友」計劃讓本地學 生有機會觀賞世界級的表演和參與各式各樣的 藝術活動。此外,藝術節亦透過後台參觀和大 師班等「加料節目」,讓觀眾與國際頂尖藝術 家互動接觸,了解節目的幕後製作過程。 衷心感謝香港藝術節團隊一直致力推動本港的 藝術發展,成績斐然。我亦感謝贊助商和捐款 者的大力支持,令每年的藝術節圓滿成功,大 獲好評。 謹祝二零一九年香港藝術節所有觀眾、參加者 和表演者可以盡情享受這次藝術之旅,留下愉 快難忘的回憶。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Hamnet Shakespeare lived and died. He was eleven years old. Not much else is known about him. Rather more is known about his father, who lived and lived, and continues to live (perhaps longer than some of us would like). Hamnet is a typo— one letter away from greatness. And from what we know, his father wasn’t able to offer him much help towards achieving greatness during his eleven years. He was too busy offering it to the rest of the world: to us. In his plays, Shakespeare has an obsession with parents telling their children how to live. But the parents are often confused, angry, scared and wrong. Perhaps we shouldn’t look to the plays of Shakespeare for a guide to how to live. Perhaps the greater conundrum is how to die. Shakespeare’s poetry is heavy with grief. There is surely no doubt that he wrote from a place of compassion and personal devastation. Because again, however much Hamnet might stand as a symbol, he also stands—or stood—as a little boy. He lived, and then he died. We are so often told to deal with grief through acceptance; we must accept reality. Claudius sadistically councils his nephew: “Thou know’st ‘tis common, all that lives must die.” But, whilst it might be common, it may even be natural, that does not mean it should ever be acceptable. It is notable how often ghosts walk Shakespeare’s stages. The dead haunt the living, and the living haunt the dead. Theatre stages that space, the dead holding the living to account, the living suspended like ghosts, in a world that is not always acceptable. Bush Moukarzel and Ben Kidd

I am sitting across from two very articulate young men from Dublin who are familiar faces: Ben Kidd and Bush Moukarzel. The duo brought Chekhov’s First Play to Find17 last year, and now they are premiering their work Hamnet. No, I did not just misspell the name of the piece. Over our conversation, it becomes clear just how important a single letter can be. The piece explores the story of Shakespeare’s son, Hamnet, who died at the age of 11 in the year 1596 while his father was absent with work. Three years later, presumably in his grief, the Bard wrote the play Hamlet. Joseph Pearson: What made you two write and direct a play about the (dead) 11-year-old son of Shakespeare? Bush Moukarzel: The name. We were just one letter away from something recognisable. We knew it would seem like a typo in a lot of brochures, and thought it lovely that the audience would be drawn

into why there is an “n” as opposed to an “l”. The play starts with the misreading. It’s a good way to start. Of course, there is almost nothing known about Hamnet Shakespeare, only that he was born and eleven years later died. It was attractive to have to conjure up material, out of the virtue that there was none. Could you tell us about the connection between Hamnet’s short life and Hamlet the play? How do you imagine the connection? Ben Kidd: Harold Bloom, the critic, wrote an essay on Hamlet called “Poem Unlimited”. The phrase appears in the play itself, in Hamlet. The idea is that the universe of Hamlet is a poem unlimited. Bush: No performance can capture the expanse of the play; no interpretation of the character can catch up with its magnitude. That's why Bloom conceives it as the limits of representation and consciousness. The subtitle of our piece is Poem Limited. It’s all too knowable, unfortunately.

Ben: Although that doesn’t preclude the idea that you shouldn’t try. There is almost nothing known about Hamnet’s life. How, then, did you do your research? Bush: We had two methods for research. We looked to Shakespeare biographies and to the experiences of children at the time—how they lived and how they died, and how that world was presaging this one. But we also had an eclectic method, which was that I read all the Shakespeare plays and extracted any moments when a parent spoke to a child. With them, I made a document. We imagined that Hamnet’s problem of not knowing his father, who was away, could be helped by an indirect self-help book, of all the fathers and mothers of Shakespeare’s plays telling him how to live. The problem is that he doesn’t understand them; they are cryptic codes he cannot crack. He can’t change an “n” to an “l”.

Ben: But organising a script around this idea was too complicated. It meant including a large amount of Shakespeare’s text, and it was brutal on the ear for the audience. So what we did became a little more conceptual, a little arch. Bush: But the original plan informs the backbone of how Hamnet navigates the universe, how Hamnet would turn that “n” into an “l”, and he casts the audience as children of Shakespeare. They join Hamnet in the cultural decoding of a canon. Hamnet’s problem becomes the audience’s. And might you tease us a little with your style? The staging of Chekhov’s First Play last year was strange and surreal, also somewhat Beckettian. What can we expect from Hamnet? Bush: One thing I am keen to mention is that one of the things we wanted to pursue with this image of Hamnet, as a dead boy, was “unnaturalism”. Something so self-evident as death is experienced in grief as unacceptable. Its experience is unnatural. So, in fact, Hamnet’s scenario, which is so inevitable—that he lived and died—wants to become sort of a cry of this Poem Limited, as the world shouldn’t be as it is. He doesn’t want to let it. Tonally and emotionally, I thought it would be quite joyous to imagine a type of theatre called “unnaturalism”.

Dead Centre was founded by Bush Moukarzel and Ben Kidd in Dublin in 2012. Their first project, Souvenir, was created for the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2012 and later toured to London, New York, Brisbane and Seoul. LIPPY premiered at the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2013 and has since travelled to Berlin, New York, the Traverse in Edinburgh and the Young Vic in London. It has won multiple awards, including the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Production, two OBIE Awards, and a Fringe First. Chekhov's First Play premiered in late 2015 at the Dublin Theatre Festival, and has played in Russia, France, Germany, London and Amsterdam. Hamnet (Dublin Theatre Festival 2017) premiered at the Schaubühne, Berlin in 2017, and has since toured to London, Holland, Boston and Berlin. Dead Centre's most recent production, Shakespeare's Last Play, premiered at the Schaubühne in 2018.

Ben Kidd is co-artistic director and co-founder of the Irish theatre group Dead Centre. He has served as co-author and co-director of various Dead Centre productions such as LIPPY (Dublin Fringe Festival, 2013), Chekhov’s First Play (Dublin Theatre Festival, 2015), Hamnet, a co-production with Abbey Theatre (Schaubühne, 2018), and Shakespeare's Last Play (Schaubühne, 2018). Other productions as a director include Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind in a new adaptation by Anya Reiss (Headlong Theatre, UK, 2014) and In the Night Time by Nina Segal (Gate Theatre, London, 2016).

He is a theatre graduate from Universidad de Chile and Trinity College Dublin. Jiménez serves as associate artist to Project Arts Centre and is also one-third of the artist-led initiative DRAFF Magazine. Jiménez established The Company in 2008, with whom he directed Who is Fergus Kilpatrick? (Spirit of the Fringe Award 2009) and As you are now so once were we (Best Production Fringe 2010). Jiménez has developed extensive work as a video designer, collaborating with theatre, dance and visual artists. These include Blanca (Maria Nilsson Waller), Elemental (Siobhan McDonald), 3D Wabi-Sabi Soul (Dylan Tighe, Lighthouse Cinema) and Medicated Milk (Aine Stapleton). His latest documentary film, See the Man, was nominated for Best New Doc at Tempo Dokumentär Festival 2017 in Stockholm, and received the main award at LightMoves Festival of Screendance. He was nominated, alongside Andrew Clancy, for an Irish Times Theatre Award in 2018 for his video design in Dead Centre’s Hamnet.

O'Donoghue is a co-founder of DRAFF, an international platform both in print and online, focusing on process in dance and theatre.

衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年邁向第4 7屆。今屆藝 術節陣容鼎盛,共有超過1700名來自香港和世 界各地的藝術家傾力演出,為觀眾帶來近1 7 0 場精彩表演。 今年藝術節的節目多姿多彩,當代及古典音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇等不同形式的藝術表演共冶一 爐。每個節目從幕後製作到台前演出,均盡顯 精湛的藝術造詣和超凡的想像力。 我很高興知道最近完成活化的中區警署建築 群,即現在的大館古蹟及藝術館,會在兩個周 末呈獻約5 0場舞蹈表演,供公眾免費入場觀 賞。大家更有機會一起參與在大館的檢閱廣 場、監獄操場,甚至是監獄囚室進行的表演節 目。牛棚藝術村亦會打造為藝術共生創造社, 首度成為藝術節發展作品的平台,場內設有不 同創意領域的工作坊,觀眾並可以欣賞一些創 作中的作品,感受藝術家的多元創意。 除了精彩表演,藝術節亦一如以往,悉心籌備 各項教育和外展活動,致力培育本地藝術人 才。「香港藝術節青少年之友」計劃讓本地學 生有機會觀賞世界級的表演和參與各式各樣的 藝術活動。此外,藝術節亦透過後台參觀和大 師班等「加料節目」,讓觀眾與國際頂尖藝術 家互動接觸,了解節目的幕後製作過程。 衷心感謝香港藝術節團隊一直致力推動本港的 藝術發展,成績斐然。我亦感謝贊助商和捐款 者的大力支持,令每年的藝術節圓滿成功,大 獲好評。 謹祝二零一九年香港藝術節所有觀眾、參加者 和表演者可以盡情享受這次藝術之旅,留下愉 快難忘的回憶。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. I am grateful, too, to the many sponsors and donors who, each year, help make the Festival a resounding success. I wish audiences, participants and performers alike a delightful and memorable 2019 Hong Kong Arts Festival experience.

Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

「我的處女作中有兩場戲稱得上天才之作。但 整體來說,即使創作時年少無知,它其實是一 個無可辯駁的詐騙。」 — 契訶夫 安東.帕夫洛維奇.契訶夫 1860 年生於俄羅斯 南部的塔甘羅格,十九歲寫下一部戲劇之後, 就轉向短篇小說創作,被譽為世上最偉大的短 篇小說巨匠。多年後,他重新開始創作戲劇, 主要作品包括《伊凡諾夫》、《凡尼亞舅舅》、 《海鷗》、《三姐妹》及《櫻桃園》。契訶夫 也是一名專業的執業醫生。不過,他自己患上 肺結核後,卻數年來都未能正確地診斷自己, 最後因而逝世。他的弟弟曾說:「每個見到他 的人都暗暗覺得他離終結不遠了,但似乎〔他〕 離終點愈近,就愈意識不到這一點。」1904 年, 契 訶 夫 病 逝, 遺 言 據 說 是「 我 好 久 沒 喝 香 檳 了。」

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in 1860 in Taganrog, southern Russia. After writing a play at the age of 19, he turned to the short story, and is widely acknowledged as the greatest exponent of the form ever to have lived. Returning to plays later in life, his major works include Ivanov, Uncle Vanya, The Seagull, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. He also trained and practiced as a doctor. He suffered from tuberculosis, but failed to diagnose himself correctly for several years leading up to his death. His brother said of this, “Everyone who saw him secretly thought the end was not far off, but the nearer [he] was to the end, the less he seemed to realise it.” He died in 1904, and his final words are reputed to have been, “It’s a long time since I drank champagne.”

The play usually regarded as Chekhov’s first was discovered after he died. Without a title, scholars usually consider it identical to a work he referred to in his letters, which he titled Безотцовщина, most accurately translated as “Fatherlessness”. A sprawling, youthful experiment, most renderings of the play through the years have named it after the central character, a philandering charismatic schoolteacher called Platonov. Never produced during Chekhov’s lifetime, it first appeared in Germany in 1928, under the title Der Unnützige Mensch Platonoff (That Worthless Fellow Platonov). It has been revisited by writers and directors throughout history. Although things of worth have often been found, the general conclusion is usually that the play remains, in the words of noted Chekhov scholar Laurence Senelick, “a conversation piece, rather than a viable addition to the repertory”. To this day, it is unclear which two scenes Chekhov was talking about.

I imagine Dead Centre staring into the darkness, casting its gaze to rough and unfinished cultural objects in the dim. Chekhov’s first play (1878), also known as Platonov for its protagonist, is a rambling 5-hour mess, rejected at the time as not performable, and subsequently subject to various acts of resuscitation by zealous Chekhovian dramaturges and directors. Dead Centre’s version compresses the play to a fifth of the original length, and adds a wry meta-commentary on headphones worn by the audience. I spoke to Bush Moukarzel about the play, Dead Centre’s peculiar perspective on it, and why he does theatre.

You’ve spoken of heightened banality in regards to your previous work, LIPPY (2013), which brings me to reflect on Chekhov’s First Play. Why did you choose to perform a piece that is known as “un-performable”? I have the feeling that is precisely why you chose it. Am I wrong? Heightened banality: yes, that works for Chekhov. If you do nothing well enough, in the end that is something. The piece is full of figures waiting. We really exaggerate that quality of waiting in Platonov, a world that always seems to expect something. Chekhov’s First Play is part of a wider project of looking at first plays of 20th century masters: the other two are Brecht’s Baal, which he rejected as non-Brechtian and indulgent; and Beckett’s
Eleutheria, which one cannot stage. In the case of Eleutheria, there are no rights available, which is a gift to us, because it provides us with the question of censorship and how to do it (without doing it). We feel a great kinship with all three: because they are bad works, rejected works. We have a strange affinity with bad works. They are excessive, dramatically incorrect, precocious. Perfect works don’t need me; I’m not about to direct The Cherry Orchard. These are unfinished plays for unfinished people. The audience feels closer to them, because of their incompleteness. We are not going to correct them, there is no dramaturgical tidying; we do not correct their texture, which is schizoid and fractured. The incompleteness is instead metaphysical and joyous.

But is there not some level of tidying by using a voice over, the directorial meta-commentary listened to by the audience on headphones that you use to introduce Chekhov’s First Play? The voice-over is a way in. There is the question: how do you start a show? Why are we here? We need to negotiate our relationship to the artificiality of the event. How do we talk to each other? This has become a historical necessity. The big question is: why, for some reason, have we reached a juncture where we need to negotiate why we’ve gathered together in the theatre? It’s like with a drug where we have grown immune to its delivery systems. We need to find novel interfaces of welcoming. The director’s commentary becomes a joyous opportunity. It can start as a method that is recognisable, but then break down in twists and turns. It can appeal to us at a primary, gut level; the voice can be joyous and curious. It is also metaphysical: it does a job, the voice controls the event. But then the project stalls, the voice withdraws, and nobody is in charge. We are left to our anxieties. Chekhov charted one social order breaking down and asked what’s coming. Platonov proposes a “superfluous” man, and it is not clear what Chekhov makes of this vicious, sadistic portrait. I have been thinking of Maurizio Lazzarato’s The Making of the Indebted Man (2012), who speaks in the context of the sovereign debt crisis, and how the greatest subject of late capitalism is the indebted subject, and how every subject takes on literal individual debt. But the effect is not just literal but also psychological, because it determines behaviour; there is hegemonic social control. The future is controlled by forces such as guilt, a Judeo-Christian shift where there is a price to pay. I believe there is a through-line from the superfluous man to the indebted man in late capitalism.

After we finish our conversation, I am left considering the configuration between audience, theatre company, and material that Bush Moukarzel proposes. When the centre is dead, intangible, perhaps the creative move is to turn our attention to the edges—to what is happening off-stage. We might shift our gaze from the unfinished plays and their indebted subjects to the painfully unfinished predicament in which we, the audience, live. But I’m sure Dead Centre would resist a simple Marxist turn in the analysis, an effort to sew up their efforts, the invitation to pursue moral or political perfection beyond the edges of the stage. This is rather too neat for me as well, and I find myself, nervously, half in love with Dead Centre’s negative capability, with the tugging gravity of imperfection. Dead Centre invites us to take part as unfinished people in an unfinished process. As Moukarzel says, “I’m not sure what theatre is for, but perhaps the shows are answering that question.”

Dead Centre was founded by Bush Moukarzel and Ben Kidd in Dublin in 2012. Their first project, Souvenir, was created for the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2012 and later toured to London, New York, Brisbane and Seoul. LIPPY premiered at the Dublin Fringe Festival in 2013 and has since travelled to Berlin, New York, the Traverse in Edinburgh and the Young Vic in London. It has won multiple awards, including the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Production, two OBIE Awards, and a Fringe First. Chekhov's First Play premiered in late 2015 at the Dublin Theatre Festival, and has played in Russia, France, Germany, London and Amsterdam. Hamnet (Dublin Theatre Festival 2017) premiered at the Schaubühne, Berlin in 2017, and has since toured to London, Holland, Boston and Berlin. Dead Centre's most recent production, Shakespeare's Last Play, premiered at the Schaubühne in 2018.

His sound installation work has been presented internationally and in many Irish galleries, including National Concert Hall Dublin, IMMA Ireland, Edinburgh Festival, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Centre and Barbican Centre. He is a founding member of the Crash Ensemble and worked with them as audio engineer and technical manager from 1997 to 2015; in 2015, he was made the ensemble's first creative partner. He won the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Sound in 2011 and 2016. He has trained extensively with international audio companies, including Meyer (USA), L'Acoustic Audio (France) and Rational Acoustics (UK). Eadie has collaborated with artists, composers and performers from varied backgrounds and genres, earning many music award nominations and much critical acclaim. He has worked with, Pan Pan Theatre, The Abbey Theatre, Dead Centre Theatre, RTÉ and the National Concert Hall, among others. He has toured worldwide with Irish acts as engineer/producer and sound designer.

O’Hara has also recently designed special effects and onstage design for Philip Connaughton’s Extra-terrestrial Events. She was previously associate designer to Pan Pan Theatre and worked on many projects with Pan Pan including: Quad, Americanitis, Everyone is King Lear in his own home, The Rehearsal Playing the Dane, All that Fall and A Doll House.

Since then, she has worked with companies including Dead Centre, Liz Roche Company, Fearghus Ó Conchúir, United Fall, Irish Modern Dance Theatre, and Junk Ensemble, touring widely throughout Europe, Australia and the USA. Her own work has been presented widely in Norway, France, the USA, Austria, Italy, the UK, Sweden and Germany. O'Donoghue is a co-founder of DRAFF, an international platform both in print and online, focusing on process in dance and theatre.
