I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Classic repertoire is reinvented through brave homages and boldly experimental retellings, and the original designs, technologies and storytelling modes of new works crash through the boundaries of the traditional stage. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

About HOME
《家》是一部探索及展現「居所」與「家」 之間關係的大型形體表演作品。《家》為觀 眾帶來一場視覺盛宴,作品集合舞蹈、幻 象、現場音樂、DI Y 工程,以及充滿創意的 觀眾互動,讓人反思:家在何方?如果家不 是一個地方,那麼家是甚麼?面對支離破碎 的社會,我們努力建立基礎、家庭、社區和 藝術。失敗了,便重新來過。 舞台上,一座房屋拔地而起。就像縮時攝影 一樣,房子很快就蓋好了。住客搬入搬出, 被逼遷、房子遭縱火、打劫、出租、改建; 住客在裏面結婚、離婚、成長、死去、徘徊 流連。他們活在現在、過去和將來住客的痕 跡中,而自身也留下痕跡。這些住客舉行派 對,就像所有曾經在那裏居住過的人都可以 同時出現,超越了時空的邏輯。 《家》這部作品旨在喚醒我們對目前本地及 全球住屋困境的關注。全球各地都面臨的城 市士紳化和移民議題,透過編導濃縮在作品 中:居住在一幢建築物中的普通人,因為社 會、政治、個人以及美學等原因紛紛離開, 一個取代一個,反反覆覆。劇場中的房屋成 為一面透視鏡,通過它我們可以看到各種因 素帶來的影響:家的假象;居所的短暫本質; 時間和金錢限制;對房屋結構不切實際的要 求;及試圖將居所視為家這個荒謬、甚至難 以實現的念頭。
HOME is a large-scale performance work that explores and explodes the relationship between “house” and “home”. A visual physical spectacle, HOME combines dance, illusion, live music, home-spun engineering, and an inventive use of audience interaction to compose a work that asks: where is home? If it is not a place, what is home? In the face of entropy, we struggle to build infrastructure, family, community, art. We fail, and we try again. On stage, a house appears from nothing. It goes up fast, choreographed like time-lapse photography. Residents move in, move out, get evicted, burn it down, loot it, rent it, remodel it, get married and divorced in it, grow up in it, die in it, haunt it—and all the while, they leave and live among traces of residents present, past and future. They throw a party, as if everyone who ever lived there could cohabitate, transcending the logic of time and space. HOME aims to awaken us to current housing dilemmas—local and global. The universal and timely themes of gentrification and migration are rendered in the choreography of ordinary people inhabiting a structure, leaving that structure through a variety of social, political, personal, and aesthetic forces, replacing one another, repeating. The project seeks to use the house of the theatre as a lens through which we might see the impact of these forces at work: the illusion of home; the transitory nature of dwelling; the constraints of time and money; the impossible structural demands of a house; the absurdity, and at times the impossibility, of trying to make a house a home.

Just sit comfortably. It’s a good seat, isn’t it? Sure, there may be better ones—every seat has its plusses and minuses—but this place, your place, this is a good place! At any rate, it’s all yours, so just make yourself at home. Feel your feet on the floor, your back against the backrest, maybe take a few deep breaths…Feels good! To have YOUR seat. It’s all yours! You have it all to yourself. You don’t even have to share! There was someone here the other night…another person that came here before you and sat here…but no matter. It’s yours now. It used to be theirs—but not now. Now, it’s your place. ALL yours. Can’t even remember that other person! Oh—and tomorrow. Tomorrow it will be someone else’s. So in a way, you are kind of sharing it, if we’re speaking frankly. But don’t worry about that right now. That doesn’t concern you now—by the time they’re sitting here, you won’t even WANT this seat! Can you imagine? Hard to believe, but it’s true! You’ll gladly give it away and be happy to sit somewhere else. Maybe in a nice restaurant. Or on a park bench. A train maybe. Or at home, wherever that might be. But right now this seat—this place, this space—it’s all yours. Enjoy it.

But it IS funny, I suppose, this migration from one seat to another…True story there is a little crab, called a hermit crab, that makes use of other animals’ shells when they outgrow their own. They just move from shell to shell as it suits them and their lifestyle. Once they’ve outgrown a shell, they just find another one. Sometimes they don’t even use shells—they get super creative and use all kinds of things. Old camera lenses, bits of debris, whatever…Sound familiar? Just migratory animals looking for a place to eat and sleep and poop and call their own. By the way, octopuses (that is correct by the way: octopi is just a fancy Latinisation; it’s not actually bona fide) are the only animal other than humans who put decorative things in their apartment for no other purpose than aesthetics. Not hugely important, but I thought I’d mention it since we were talking about interesting sea creatures. Is that what we were talking about? OH! Your seat….Yes, it’s a good one. I can’t remember— you’ve been here before? What were you seeing? It’s a good space isn’t it? They put on some great shows here. Can you remember any particular moments? It’s funny, isn’t it? When the show is really going, you kind of forget the space of the theater, don’t you… You get so drawn into the action that it’s kind of like the theatre itself sort of vanishes. They call a theatre a "house" by the way. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this is the HOUSE, and you are right now residing in this house for just a short while before some other body takes this same space and claims it as its own for a little while and have their experience of pretty much the same thing, though completely different of course, and they bring all of their own stuff with them to this same space and it informs what they see…Anyway, I’m just stating the obvious since we have this time to kill before the show starts, but it’s great to have you

here. Love talking about this stuff. Take a look around at all these people! Total strangers! For now, they’re your neighbors, and they’re having a similar experience to you. Reading this. Looking around…Thinking about hermit crabs… It will be a great feeling too when all of this is done and you can just unwind and head on back home again. Love that feeling. Where are you staying by the way? Are you living near here? Long commute? Funny isn’t it, how you can just head on home without really having to even think of it…Unless of course you’re not from here and you’re really working hard to navigate the area to make it back to a friend’s place or a hotel or some place that—try as it might—won’t ever really feel like home…But if you ARE heading home after this…well you barely even need think of how you’ll get there. You can just think about all of the events that have transpired in your day and before you know it, you’ll just be floating through your doorway and hanging your hat and haunting your haunt and flopping on your lily pad and whatever other adage comes to mind… Some internal compass will just unconsciously follow that trail of breadcrumbs and before you know it you’ll be snug up in your bed and dreaming once again… Dreaming of other homes you once made. Other spots, other places…Other seats where you once sat, other cities you once called yours, other shells where you once curled up, other gardens you once tended. Other rooms. Other dens. Other nests. Remember the feel? The light. The smell. The un-nameable thing that turns a simple set of coordinates into some psychic shelter rooted deep inside of you. C a n yo u e x p l a i n t h e m o m e n t w h i c h k i c k started HOME? I was invited to consider the creation of a project that would perform at BAM’s Harvey Theatre in New York. I had not created work for a large proscenium-style theatre before, so I began to think about HOME with this space in mind. My first thought was how much I’d like to see many, many bodies on stage—of all sorts, ages, and kinds. I came to thinking about houses initially because of Chaplin and Keaton—wanting to create a work where we would see a house fall apart on stage would be a tremendous amount of fun. But HOME ultimately is the opposite—we really see the house get constructed and lived in much more than how it falls apart. I think it’s more hopeful and it gets at something else—our need for shelter and how all people, regardless of nation or demographic, create something called “home”. You collaborated with your sister, Stefanie Sobelle, for this production. What was working with her like? Stef had never worked officially as a dramaturg before, but is one of my closest friends and trusted artistic allies. We had often talked about working together in a more official capacity, and this project was a natural fit. Beyond Stef’s obvious academic knowledge and scope of research on the poetics of space, she and I also shared a home for the first 18 years of our lives. Trying to remember our childhood home, and discovering where our memories both came together and diverged, was fascinating. What have you discovered through personal research and practice to frame your own definition of “home”? When I ask people what “home” means to them, generally they come back to a mysterious thing that they can only define as a kind of “feeling”. I can empathise with this sensation. It might be about the way the light plays, or the way that smells hit you, or sounds. I have many places that I call home. It seems to be something that, while hard to define, is clear and unarguable as an experience. Did Gaston Bachelard’s Poetics of Space inform your practice in any way? Yes, very much! Both Gaston Bachelard and Georges Perec’s Species of Spaces and Life: A User’s Manual were big influences. Gaston’s book is a kind of reverie—he opens a space to dream, which is very much akin to how I see the house of the theatre. I want to open a space for the audience to dream—perhaps about their history or fantasy of dwelling, or perhaps about all sorts of other things that may need to find the light while the watcher watches. Unadulterated daydreaming is vital to the integrity and vitality of our imaginations, of our mental health, and emotional wellbeing. That is the service that artwork can provide—and perhaps most notably, performance, because it plays with time in such a distinct way.

Is it fair to say that the defining virtues of house versus home are becoming regularly, and increasingly, discussed in response to our time of mass migration, housing crises, and so forth? Yes, both on a local level as well as on a global level. Where I live, in Brooklyn, we talk a lot about “gentrification”. In our city, and in many cities, people are losing their houses, and neighbourhoods are changing. There is a hostile and violent displacement of people based on economics. It seems to be a very complex problem that involves a ruthless and inhumane real estate development culture, too many people, not enough space, and not enough basic respect.

In this space, building a house often means depriving someone else not only of their housing but also their home. Cultures are disappearing, and whole neighbourhood ecosystems are obliterated—or at best endangered. As I visit other cities in the US, I see or hear of this same scenario everywhere—and yet the new person that came to rent in Brooklyn may have done so innocently. The forces at play are much larger than individuals—and yet individuals need to stand up. It’s a complicated and deeply divisive issue. And then there’s immigration. From my perspective as an American, I can certainly say that “house and home” are constantly at play in the news, and in conversation. The US is having something of an identity crisis about its roots as a safe haven for immigrants and refugees from all sorts of situations, and a newfound isolationist and nativist way of thinking that is shaping its policy. The US isn’t the only one dealing with this identity crisis. Nations all over the world are trying to figure out who can come and who can’t—as well as what determines their own national identity. Meanwhile, the planet is rapidly changing too. The earth is changing, and our home—locally, globally—is collectively changing, whether we like it or not. So the questions “Exactly whose home is this? What do I need to live? What does home mean to me?” seem not only pertinent but immediate. And personally necessary. Finally, what do you hope the audience will walk away with after seeing your play? I hope that they host more parties—and that they invite us. We will come! Interviewed by Anna Harriet Hamilton

Geoff Sobelle is an actor, director and maker of absurdist performance works. His independent work includes Flesh and Blood & Fish and Fowl (Edinburgh Fringe First Award), The Object Lesson (Bessie Award, Edinburgh Fringe First Award, Carol Tambor Award, Total Theatre Award, NY Times Critics’ Pick) and HOME. His works under the name Rainpan43 include: all wear bowlers (Innovative Theatre Award, Drama Desk nomination), Amnesia Curiosa, machines machines machines machines machines machines machines (OBIE Award for Design) and Elephant Room. He was a company member of Philadelphia’s Pig Iron Theatre Company from 2001–2012. His work has been supported by the Independence Foundation, the Philadelphia Theatre Initiative, the Wyncote Foundation, USArts International, the Princeton Atelier, the MAP Fund and the New England Foundation for the Arts. While he works primarily in collaboration with his brother Billy as the Dufala Brothers, he also works on as many other projects in as many other fields as possible, being drawn in particular to works that explore overlapping concerns of various disciplines. He makes drawings, clothes, furniture, prints, music, sculpture, photos and books, and thinks an awful lot about what all these things have in common and what on earth people do with them. Dufala has been working intermittently with dance and theatre as a designer for about 20 years, and over this time has worked with Pig Iron Theatre Company, BalletX, anonymous bodies, Geoff Sobelle, Thaddeus Phillips and others. With his brother Billy, he received an Obie Award for Design with Rainpan43’s machines machines machines machines machines machines machines, and shared a Bessie Award with the entire design team for Geoff Sobelle’s The Object Lesson (2015). Both Dufala brothers co-teach sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and are represented by Fleisher/Ollman Gallery in Philadelphia. Their work is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the West Collection, and many private collections.

He was also the production manager and lighting director for Ralph Lemon’s How Can You Stay in the House All Day and Not Go Anywhere? He has also worked with the the Chocolate Factory, Fusebox Festival, On the Boards, San Francisco Symphony, Jacob’s Pillow, Carnegie Hall, Santa Fe Opera, Beijing Music Festival, Queer Zagreb, MAC France, Santiago a Mil Theatre Festival, and the Holland Festival. He has received Sherwood, Drammy and Horton awards, two Ovation awards, and Bessie Awards in 2014 and 2015 for Outstanding Visual Design. Kuhl is originally from New Mexico, a graduate of CalArts, and an associate artist of Hand2Mouth Theatre.

The band, with whom he has toured extensively, also released the 6-track Doomsday EP in 2009 on the same label. In the past two years, Elvis has made two film scores: I am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House (Netflix, 2016) and The Blackcoat’s Daughter (A24, 2017). A soundtrack album for the latter was released via Death Waltz Recording Co. in March 2017. He currently calls Hudson, New York and Cape Cod, Massachusetts home.

He was a co-founder and co-artistic director of The Candidatos, a twoman theatre company that performed their most popular show, I’m Sorry & I’m Sorry at the New York Clown Theatre Festival and Dublin Fringe, and in St. Louis, Minneapolis and Philadelphia. He is a graduate of the Pig Iron Theatre Company’s Advanced Performance Training Program and The University of Iowa. Rose is a certified yoga teacher and teaches at studios around Philadelphia.

As part of the drama department at school, he most recently played Bert in Mary Poppins. Crouch is very excited to be part of the HOME company after participating in workshops at BRIC and ArtsEmerson.

Since 2006, Beth Morrison Projects (BMP) has been a tastemaker at the forefront of musical and theatrical innovation by supporting living composers and their collaborators during the creation of ground-breaking new works in opera, opera-theatre, and vocal-theatre. BMP encourages risk-taking in all its artists, resulting in provocative works that represent a dynamic and lasting legacy for a new American canon. Over the past five years alone, BMP has produced works in 43 venues in 22 cities around the world. BMP’s commitment to cutting edge musical expression has created “its own genre” (Opera News) of originality. In 2013, Beth Morrison Projects and HERE Arts Center co-founded the PROTOTYPE Festival, which showcases contemporary opera-theatre and music-theatre projects over ten days each January. The New Yorker recently wrote that the festival is “essential to the evolution of American Opera”, and the New York Times called the festival “Bracingly innovative…a point of reference”. The 2014 bi-coastal expansion to Los Angeles sprang from growing partnerships with institutions such as the LA Opera, the LA Phil, the Ford Theatres and RVCC. BMP is a National Sawdust Artist-in-Residence.
