I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Since winning the 11th International Tchaikovsky Competition, Denis Matsuev has become a virtuoso in the grandest of Russian pianistic tradition and has quickly established himself as one of the most prominent pianists of his generation. Matsuev performs with the world's best orchestras, such as the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Filarmonica della Scala, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Mariinsky Orchestra and the Russian National Orchestra, as well as numerous others. Matsuev regularly appears with the most distinguished conductors on a stage today, including Valery Gergiev, Yuri Temirkanov, Mariss Jansons, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Chailly, Christian Thielemann, Kurt Masur, Lorin Maazel, Paavo Järvi, Antonio Pappano, Charles Dutoit, Alain Gilbert, Leonard Slatkin, Myung-Whun Chung, Semyon Bychkov, Iván Fischer, Ádám Fisher, Gianandrea Noseda, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Manfred Honeck, James Conlon, Vladimir Spivakov, Mikhail Pletnev, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Yury Bashmet, Alexander Sladkovsky, Kristian Järvi and others. He was viewed by billions of spectators around the globe while performing Rachmaninov at the closing ceremony of the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014. In 2016, Matsuev started the Grand Piano Competition for young pianists in Moscow as artistic director. Additionally, he is the president of the charitable Russian New Names Foundation that discovers and supports talented children and helps to develop music education in regions of his native Russia.

In the 2018/19 season, Matsuev performs with the New York Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, and Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Gergiev; the Israel Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta; the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with Christian Thielemann; the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Mariss Jansons; the London Symphony and Chicago Symphony Orchestras with Gianandrea Noseda; La Scala Orchestra with Riccardo Chailly; Konzerthausorchester Berlin with Thomas Sanderling; Vienna Symphony Orchestra with Alain Altinoglu; the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra of London and Gewandhaus Orchestra with Yuri Temirkanov; the Montreal Symphony Orchestra with Kent Nagano; and the Orchestra of the Teatro di San Carlo with Neeme Järvi. He performs recitals at Carnegie Hall, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Vienna Konzerthaus, Pergola Theatre in Florence, G. Verdi Conservatory in Turin, Tonhalle Zürich, Tonhalle Dusseldorf, Berlin Philharmonie, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Théâtre des ChampsÉlysées, Tivoli in Copenhagen, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Smetana Hall in Prague, Gasteig in Munich, Santa Cecilia in Rome, Milan Conservatory and Flagey in Brussels. He also takes part in concerts and tours with Staatskapelle Dresden as this season’s Capel-Virtuoso.
In 2017, Matsuev was awarded with the State Order of Honour and the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation for his Stars on the Baikal Festival in Irkustk. As Ambassador of the FIFA World Cup Russia, Matsuev organised a globally broadcast concert featuring Valery Gergiev, Anna Netrebko,

When we think of classical and jazz musicians, it is easy to visualize the two occupying different musical worlds, as different as day from night, ebony from ivory, uncompromising control from unchecked spontaneity.

It was quite a different story back in the Roaring Twenties, when jazz became the byword in cosmopolitan Paris and American societies. Few classical composers were left untouched by the influence of the "jungle sound" and the sense of great vitality and audacious liberty underlining this new genre. Milhaud’s La Creation du Monde, Kurt Weill’s Threepenny Opera, Stravinsky’s L’histoire du soldat and Shostakovich’s Tahiti Trot blended classical forms with the sounds of jazz. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, brimming with exotic sounds, biting syncopations and sensual blue notes, was rooted in the composer’s fascination with American jazz and the inimitable George Gershwin.

That admiration was mutual—Gershwin aspired to be a serious composer of symphonic music. He ventured so far as to ask for lessons from Ravel, only to be told, “Why become a second-rate Ravel when you're already a first-rate Gershwin?” Gershwin’s wildly popular Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, Piano Concerto in F and Porgy and Bess proved that he was capable of holding his ground in the classical realm. The examples do not stop there: around the 1960s, there was a surge in popularity of the “Renaissance man” of music, who traverses easily across the borders of classical, jazz and pop—including, most notably, the pianist-composers Leonard Bernstein and Dave Brubeck. In recent years, another name could be added to this list of musical polyglots proficient in the idioms of both classical and jazz: piano virtuoso Denis Matsuev. The best of both worlds While Denis Matsuev is often viewed as heir to the Russian lineage of Rachmaninov, Horowitz and Richter, it makes equal sense to view him as a pianist straddling the classical and jazz divide. In fact, Matsuev grew up listening to jazz and playing TV jingles on the piano at an early age. At his very first TV appearance in 1990 on Moscow’s Morning Star, Matsuev played a jazz piece of his own: Paris Memories. “My father used to collect recordings of outstanding jazz musicians. I listened to them all my life as far as I can remember myself, and I always tried to improvise,” Matsuev recalled in an interview with TASS in 2017. “I like it, and I do not see any reason why I should renounce this pleasure. And sometimes, I feel like taking it easy and making fun on stage to put smiles on people’s faces.” Apart from carrying his "trunk-concertos" with him to stages across the world, Matseuv has become increasingly known for his ingenuity in improvisation. At age 25, he won over the audience with an improvisation of “Happy Birthday” to the knowing winks and chuckles of the conductor

Vladimir Spivakov and members of the Moscow Virtuosi. Matsuev's sheer spontaneity and rich vocabulary of the stride, walking bass and rag-time showed his mastery of the jazz keyboard idiom. Improvisation on the macabre “Hall of the Mountain King” from Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite and Duke Ellington’s Take the ‘A’ Train share equal billing on his recital programme. Matsuev’s unconventional (though, in fact, historically-informed) approach to Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, extending the cadenza into an improvisation by a jazz trio, has not only won him recognition as one of the leading virtuoso pianists of our time, but has also brought classical music to the attention of a wider audience.

Composer, producer and double bass player Andrey Ivanov is an Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation and a creator of new principles in double bass performance. He is the author and producer of many art projects created under the Ivanov Brothers’ International Art Production Center. As a child, he started his musical journey by learning to play violin and later completed his academic training at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music. After graduation, he taught the double bass in the Conservatory. In 1989, he won the Grand Prix of a prestigious jazz contest in Brussels with his brother, Mikhail. He has since gone on to participate in top jazz festivals around the world, including the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Montreal and Montreux Jazz Festivals. Today, he performs on stage with the most recognized contemporary artists, including Denis Matsuev. He has worked with a number of conductors such as Valeriy Gergiev, Uriy Simonov, Dmitriy Yurovskiy, Vladimir Spivakov, Aleksandr Sladkovskiy and others. By combining jazz and academic principles in his thinking about music, Ivanov has developed new solo techniques for the double bass, realised in his performance of the Concertino solo with Uriy Simonov at the Crescendo Music Festival.

Born in 1981 in Moscow, Aydar Gaynullin is a worldrenowned button accordion player, vocalist, composer and member of the Cinematography Academy. He began playing button accordion at the age of eight under the instruction of T. Krupchanskaya. In 1994, he was nominated a fellow of the New Names Charity Foundation and the International Association of Peace Foundations. In 2000, he graduated from the Alfred Schnittke Moscow Music College and enrolled in the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, where he pursued post-graduate studies. He has also studied at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik in Berlin under the instruction of Prof. Gudrun Wall. Gaynullin is winner of the Nika Award and the White Elephant National Prize of Film Press and Critics for composing music for Ivan Vyrypaev’s film Euphoria. He is also winner of the Best Film Music prize of the XX Open All-Russia Kinotavr Film Festival for his work on Vyrypaev’s film Oxygen (2009). Gaynullin is a winner of 18 international accordion and button accordion competitions, including the World Accordion Cup in London (2001). Gaynullin has performed in major venues, including the Great Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Salle Gaveau in Paris, Wigmore Hall in London, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Kennedy Center in Washington, Moscow International House of Music, and the State Kremlin Palace. He is a regular participant of the Crescendo Music Festival. In 2003, Gaynullin was included in the President’s Golden Book of Talents of Russia for his outstanding button accordion artistry. The same year, he received scholarships from the Mstislav Rostropovich, Friedrich Lips and Russian Performing Arts Foundations. Gaynullin is an Honorable Member of the Kaunas Conservatory in Lithuania, a recipient of the government’s Young Gift of Russia Award (2007), and a jury member for prestigious Russian and international music festivals.

Andrey Alexandrovich Gorbachev is a leading balalaika player who came to prominence in 1992 as the GrandPrix winner of the Kubok Severa (Cup of the North) Folk String Instrument Competition (Cherepovets, Russia). In 1993, Gorbachev won first prize at the International V.V. Andreeva Competition (Tver, Russia). In the last fifteen years, Gorbachev has performed more than 1,000 concerts on stages across Russia, the UK (where he performed for Queen Elisabeth II), Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Ukraine, Poland, Portugal, Hungary, Turkey and Japan. As a leading balalaika player, Gorbachev is often invited to take part in various music competitions as a jury member; to date he has participated as a chief or participating jury member in 70 music competitions in Russia, Germany, Ukraine and Japan. Since 1997, Gorbachev has worked as a teacher for the S.V. Rachmaninov Institute of Music in Tambov. Since 2000, he has also been teaching in Russia’s Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow. In 2004, he took over the lead of the Folk String Instruments Department and, a few years later, was assigned the title of Professor. A number of students have been taught by Gorbachev, seven of which have gone on to win top music competitions in Russia and abroad. Gorbachev has developed new techniques of balalaikaplaying and is in constant and close cooperation with a number of composers, including Sergey Slonimsky, Mikhail Zeiger, Mikhail Bronner, Efrem Podgaits, Kirill Volkov, Anatoly Kusyakov, Alexander Tsygankov, Evgeny Derbenko and Alexandr Rogachev. Gorbachev has made a contribution of seventeen compositions to the balalaika music repertoire and is author of ten books of music, as well as more than thirty articles published in professional journals in recent years.

Famed Russian drummer Alexander Zinger began studying percussion at the age of six. In 1998, he completed his jazz studies at the Rostov State Music School and entered the school's Jazz Department. During his years there, he played with three big bands under the batons of Peter Nazaretov, Victor Budarin, Kim Nazretov and Yuriy Kinus.

In 2002, Zinger moved to Moscow and started collaborative work with Marimba Plus and Arkady Shilkloper. There, Zinger entered the Percussion Department of the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, from which he graduated in 2007. In 2003, at the 2nd “Uniti” International Jazz Festival in Kiev, Zinger was awarded a diploma for his significant contribution to the development of jazz music in Ukraine. In 2007, he won the first prize of the 4th International Open Festival of Young Jazz Musicians in Rostov-on-Don.

丹尼爾．古洛維奇 鼓

Gulevich was a participant of Bonzo Bash (2015), the Drum Wave International Percussion Competition (2015), The Parade of Percussion Instruments (2016), Star Wave (2015) and Golden Talents (2017). He won the Grand Prix at Fairy Talents (2017), Glory to Fatherland, and Shock Wave (2017) and was a participant in the show Better than All and a finalist of the All-Russian “Blue Bird” Contest of Young Talents (2017). Gulevich is a fellow of the New Names Charity Foundation and studies at Kursk School No. 6 under the instruction of Emelyanov Nikolay Ivanovich.
索菲亞．杜琳娜 薩克斯管
Sofia Turina Saxophone 索菲亞．杜琳娜於 2007 年出生，就讀蕭邦音樂學校，師隨斯文娜。杜琳娜是「俄 羅斯未來」國家文化藝術大獎的得獎者，亦是第十七屆胡桃夾子國際青少年電視 大賽「管樂及敲擊樂」組別，以及俄羅斯「藍鳥」青年人才大獎的得獎者。杜琳 娜自五歲起與不同管弦樂團合作，包括國家室樂團「莫斯科大師」系列、伊戈． 博曼指揮的莫斯科爵士樂團演出、聖彼得堡國家大教堂交響樂團，以及莫斯科愛 樂協會。她亦經常參與馬祖耶夫的爵士樂計劃。 Born in 2007, Sofia Turina studies at the F. Chopin School under the instruction of N. M. Zimina. Turina is a winner of the “Future of Russia” National Prize for culture and art, the 17th International Nutcracker Youth Television Contest in the “Wind and Percussion Instrument" category and the All-Russian “Blue Bird” Contest of Young Talents (Grand Prix). From the age of five, the young saxophonist has performed with orchestras including the State Chamber Orchestra "Virtuosi of Moscow", the Moscow Jazz Orchestra under Igor Butman, and the symphonic orchestras of the State Academic Chapel of St. Petersburg and the Moscow Philharmonic Society. Turina is a regular participant in Denis Matsuev’s jazz projects.
