I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Nouveau Jazz Weekend 爵士樂以及世界各地所有受爵士樂影響的音樂， 支撐起很多城市的音樂產業，這些樂手、音樂 組合或樂隊技藝超群，充滿民族及個人特色， 他們加起來的影響力，對音樂文化的傳播，絕 對比得上創意日漸衰微的流行音樂。 過去十多年，香港藝術節引進了很多大名鼎鼎 的爵士樂手，多數來自爵士樂原產地美國，千 多兩千人的大音樂廳往往座無虛席，這也成為 了藝術節的節目特色之一。但其實所謂著名， 畢竟只是相對的文化產業概念，尤其在現今的 世代，具有品味的聽眾，更看重的是發現不同 的音樂內涵、風格。呈獻及推介世界各地數之 不盡的新爵士樂，正是我們開創「爵士新潮」 系列的理念，是否正宗爵士樂已非重點。
2 0 1 9 年「爵士新潮」迎來兩位深受樂迷歡迎的 巴塞隆拿年輕爵士音樂人，分別是鋼琴家馬可． 梅斯基達及低音大提琴家佐治．達洛查。他們 的音樂糅合古典音樂與爵士樂，更會因應時代 創造獨有的音樂詮釋。 馬可．梅斯基達連續四年獲選加泰隆尼亞爵士 樂手及現代音樂協會年度音樂家。他喜愛多位 古典作曲家，特別對拉威爾的音樂情有獨鍾， 這次來港將為香港樂迷帶來《拉威爾的夢》， 透過爵士樂三重奏重新演繹充滿爵士樂節奏及 藍調的拉威爾作品。來自葡萄牙的佐治．達洛 查擅長彈奏低音大提琴，並擁有一把獨特的嗓 音，他將利用歌聲、琴音和樂句循環效果器 (loop

Jazz music and musical genres influenced by jazz form the backbone of the music industry in many cities. These musicians possess extraordinary skills, and their music embodies strong ethnic and personal characteristics that influence the spread of music culture on par with the impact of popular music. Over the years, HKAF has brought many worldfamous jazz musicians to Hong Kong. Most of these musicians have come from the USA, the birthplace of jazz. Sold-out concerts have become a distinctive feature of HKAF programmes. Yet this notion of “fame” is just a relative concept; we also value the exploration of different musical sensibilities and styles. In its second year, the Nouveau Jazz series highlights our vision of presenting and promoting new jazz styles from around the world. This year we present two innovative artists who developed their talents in the thriving Barcelona music scene and whose diverse musical cross-pollinations unfurl into uncommon sounds and exhilarating re-interpretations. For no fewer than four consecutive years, the young pianist Marco Mezquida has been named Musician of the Year by the Association of Jazz Musicians and Modern Music of Catalonia. For his Hong Kong debut, he and his trio perform Ravel’s Dreams, reinterpreting the composer’s classics with blues and jazz-infused rhythms. Originally hailing from Portugal, double bassist Jorge da Rocha draws on his bow strings and satiny vocals to perform A Few of My Favourite Songs, revisiting songs by beloved artists from Björk to Radiohead with his singular style and the help of a loop station.

Barcelona Beats 西班牙加泰隆尼亞的音樂歷史源遠流長，由於 位處地中海，接壤法國南部，所以他們早期的 音樂深受歐洲及北非傳統民謠影響，主要運用 西班牙結他、鋼琴、小提琴等樂器。相較於安 達魯西亞的佛蘭明高的狂野節奏，加泰隆尼亞 的音樂散發一份典雅格調。當地音樂長年累月 百花齊放，其中爵士樂更與加泰隆尼亞密不可 分。 加泰隆尼亞的爵士樂歷史，可追溯至 1920 年代； 當時美國的爵士樂風潮由小眾走向主流，1960 年代前，不少美國著名的爵士音樂人都會定期 到訪當地，將搖擺樂、實驗音樂等帶入西班牙 樂壇。可是，西班牙內戰 （1936 – 1939）爆 發後，爵士樂在弗朗西斯科．佛朗哥的獨裁統 治下發展遲緩。但幸得著名失明爵士鋼琴手提 提．蒙圖里奧與多位美國爵士樂手於 1940 至

The music of Catalonia has a long history. Its borders with the Mediterranean Sea to the east and southern France to the north contribute much to the traditional European and North African folk influences found in its early music. In comparison with the wild rhythms of Andalusian flamenco, the sounds of Catalonia’s classical guitars, pianos and violins possess an elegant ethos that, with the passage of time, has developed into an abundant menagerie of styles—an evolution in which jazz has played an indispensable role. To understand Catalan jazz history, we must look back to the 1920s, when the American genre shifted from a minority art form into mainstream entertainment. Up until the 1960s, many celebrated American jazz musicians regularly visited Spain,
introducing swing and experimental music to local music circles. Although the development of Catalan jazz slowed with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) under the suppression of General Franco’s dictatorship, free jazz continued to develop in the 1940s and 50s thanks to the efforts to collaborate with American jazz musicians by the blind jazz pianist, Tete Montoliu. Since its introduction to Barcelona in 1918, jazz has become intertwined with local life and culture. The genre is a regular discipline in well-known higher education institutions, such as the Catalonia College of Music (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, ESMUC) and Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu, matched by a growing number of live performance venues, such as the Festival de
Jazz de Barcelona and Festival de Jazz de Terrassa. These platforms allow local and overseas musicians to gather and learn together, bringing richness and diversity into the ever-changing Catalan jazz scene. Much like their predecessors, many of the Barcelona-based musicians visiting the 2019 Festival use music as a communicative bridge: to transmit emotions to listeners, to collaborate with a range of musicians, and to fan the flames of creative passion on stage through drawing on the wellsprings of personal experience and collective memory. What would Ravel dream? What were the images and stories that inhabited such an out-of-the ordinary mind? We don’t know. As a matter of fact, very little is known about Maurice Ravel. We know his material life rather well; we know where and how he lived. But his inside world remains an enigma, even eighty years after a slow agony took his life—when aphasia turned his brain into a cage where notes, rhythms and harmonies would float, disconnected, unable to find their ways into any form of expression. Such a frightening end was an epilogue to a surprising existence. He was fathomless, even to those who dealt with him first-hand. When it comes to Ravel, we know of no lovers or deep friendships—let alone true passion—save for his spooky collection of mechanical artifacts, automats and tin birds, to which he would devote his patience and dedication. Ravel would show similar meticulousness when it came to his music sheets, written with clockwork precision and the wisdom of an alchemist. That is what Ravel was: an alchemist of sounds, an artist that could combine timbres as if extracting distills from his alembics. But Ravel’s lab would not only rescue old notions; alien to the mythical and sentimental times of romanticism, he would combine timbres, intensities and disparate durations inspired by a fast and vibrant world made of machines and motors. Jazz captivated him, and this fascination grew year after year. It climaxed during a long-awaited tour of the United States and Canada in 1928. He visited New York, Chicago, New Orleans and other mythical jazz centres. He saw Duke Ellington
perform at the Cotton Club, Fred Astaire at the Alvin Theater and George Gershwin at the then new, now legendary, Savoy in Harlem. His connection to jazz was very different to that of many other classical composers of his generation. He would feel captivated by drums that would horrify others, the glissandi of the brasses or the percussive use of the pizzicato on the double bass, so unusual in the orthodox tradition. America welcomed Ravel as a celebrity and, as such, he signed many autographs. This is no irrelevant detail: Ravel’s signature is a universe of its own and deserves a special chapter in the history of graphology for its carefully spaced, identical fonts, as if his brain calculated those elemental cells one by one. In the same way, his handwritten musical transcripts, with their amazingly well-spaced notes, invite the interpreter to fill in those blanks and drive the notes to a sensitive world made of flesh and sensations. That is the potential universe for which Marco Mezquida has redesigned the map. He and his trio link those notes that follow alternative trajectories to those that classical music has followed: trajectories triangulating with diverse languages, crossing from end to end the history of the jazz that Ravel witnessed first-hand during an extraordinary period of musical history. We ignore what Ravel would dream, let alone if he could imagine where jazz would go. But we do know that Ravel was able to write music that would make an album like this one feasible—an album that finds its place in listeners’ imaginations and remains long after, filling their nights’ vigils with wonderful dreams.

Martín Meléndez was born in Moscow from Cuban parents in 1982. He began his musical studies in cello at the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán in Cuba and later continued his studies at Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA). His musical inspirations come from jazz, Cuban, funk and flamenco. Currently based in Barcelona, he is a member of the AupaQUARTET and Carlos Saura's Flamenco Hoy. For the past seven years, he has been part of Rafael Amargo's Opera y Flamenco. He has collaborated with artists including Pablo Milanés, Chano Dominguez, Macaco, Dorantes, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Yusa, Descemer Bueno, Antonio Rey, Kiko Veneno, Ernesto Aurignac, Raynald Colom, and Kinan Azmeh. Meléndez has been a guest teacher of modern cello at Barcelona Fiddle Congress (BFC) 2016 and at Crisol de Cuerda Tradicional.

Aleix Tobias studied percussion at the Escola de Música de Badalona and Taller de Músics in Barcelona with Ernest Martínez and Enildo Rasúa. He complemented his academic education with long visits to Western Africa and Turkey. After learning Iberian traditions from Eliseo Parra, Tobias created Coetus, an orchestra specialized in Iberian percussion, which allowed him bring a renewed context to these traditional instruments. While touring globally with Coetus, Tobias has offered countless workshops on Iberian percussion. Tobias has worked with artists such as Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Misirli Ahmet, Erkan Ogur and Ercan Irmak, Carles Dènia, Maria del Mar Bonet, Lídia Pujol, Marina Rossell, Raúl Rodríguez, Aziza Brahim, and Judit Neddermann. He also works as a producer.

Since his eruption onto the scene, there has been a consensus among media, organisers, musicians and audiences alike that he is one of the most dazzling European musicians in quite some time. Eclectic and versatile, Mezquida shines equally as composer, pianist, improviser, accompanist and bandleader. Above all, Mezquida is a playful and unpredictable artist, a universe in which to fall, and a torrent in which to surrender and let go. Jarrett, Schubert, Evans, Rachmaninov and Bley merge exquisitely into Mezquida’s musical DNA, where they become integrated into his stream of expressiveness at unexpected intersections that have become hallmarks of the musical organism that Mezquida represents. Piano virtuoso Marco Mezquida is as prolific as he is wildly curious about a range of genres, composers and musical possibilities. On the eve of his solo performance in Hong Kong, he shares insights on the process of crafting his singular piano solo experiences. How do your solo performances differ from your collaborative ones? When I play with other musicians on stage, we usually offer a repertoire that we already know and have probably also recorded. In my piano solo concerts, I normally perform a first part that is entirely improvised with absolute freedom, inspired by the moment, the venue, and the connection between the audience and me; in the second part, I play my compositions or songs from other artists, often chosen in the moment. I like to be as free as possible; I have studied and played a lot to be as fresh and powerful as I can be. Why is playing the piano as a whole instrument an important part of your practice? The piano is an instrument with more sounds and possibilities than we are accustomed to with the traditional sounds produced by playing only the keyboard. Inside the piano lives another rich world of beautiful and inspiring sonorities. Jorge da Rocha was born in 1980 in Oporto, Portugal. In 2005, da Rocha travelled to Barcelona with the intention of dedicating himself totally to music. He studied guitar and double bass at Taller de Músics and, between 2008 and 2012, completed the Advanced Course in Jazz and Modern Music at the Conservatori Superior de Liceu, where he studied with Horacio Fumero, David Mengual and Nono Fernández. Since his arrival in Catalonia, he has shared the stage with musicians such as Dani Pérez, Jon Robles, Jordi Bonell, Matthew L. Simon and Ismael Dueñas. Da Rocha collaborates and records with Mosaico Collective, Samantha de Siena, Anna Morley, Calima Electric Blue and Raynald Colom, among many others. He performs in the main clubs and festivals of Catalonia, including the Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival. For some years, da Roc ha has been dedicated to researching new ways to play the double bass. As part of that process, in 2016 he recorded his first solo work: These are a few of my favourite songs, an album of covers played in his special way. The album has been presented numerous times in Spain, Portugal and Germany. In 2017, he released To Drop and Let Go, composed entirely of original songs. During 2018, To Drop and Let Go was presented in several venues and festivals across Europe.

The fruit of his personal investigation into jazz music and the double bass, Jorge da Rocha's album These are a few of my favourite songs is a unique work of art in which all of the sounds come from just two instruments: the voice and the double bass. In a constant process of discovery, each song carries a distinctive style that highlights da Rocha’s originality. Versatile in resources and diverse in soundscapes, this album captures the listener’s attention from the very first moment. The album was released in April 2016 by Whatabout Music (Barcelona), recorded and mixed by Dave Bianchi (Dry Town Studios, Barcelona) and mastered by Alexis Kevork Bassali (Kevork Mastering Studio, France).
