I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

The Li Biao Percussion Group was formed in 2005. Its members are talented musicians with a virtuosic command of classical, contemporary jazz and pop. The group’s repertoire includes not only percussion music classics but also works written especially for them, by them. The range of works performed by the group extends across time, bridging classics with the contemporary and East with West, thus creating a universal language that connects with audiences regardless of cultural background. The range of instruments used by the group numbers close to 100, weighing almost five tonnes in total. The eclectic format of the group’s concerts has made them truly shine. One European newspaper critic described the group’s performances as "a multi-sensory musical tour around the world."

Li Biao Percussion Group’s busy schedule has taken its members all over the world; they have been frequent guests at many world-class concert halls. Recent highlights include a concert at the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie and the International Percussion Festival at China NCPA in 2018. As a continuum of the Belt and Road Summit held in Beijing, the ensemble returned to China in 2017 and completed nine concerts on the theme of “From East to West: Percussion Silk Road”. The ensemble celebrated its 10th anniversary by completing a tour of China in 2015, following a monumental tour in South America the previous year, featuring 12 sold-out concerts in seven countries. Li Biao officially signed with Sony Music Entertainment in 2015 and has since released the album Li Biao World of Percussion – The Best of 10 Years, containing classic pieces performed by the group, as well as works composed by group members, to mark the anniversary of the ensemble. In 2008 and 2009, under the sponsorship of Mercedes–Benz, the group embarked on a 12-city tour through China, including a recording for the closing ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and an eye-catching live performance at the event itself. Since its establishment, Li Biao Percussion Group has played a vital and active role in promoting percussion music. It has performed hundreds of concerts and has premiered over 100 new works.

Brazilian composer Ney Rosauro’s Valencia for percussion ensemble is an exciting and uplifting piece in the Spanish mood, with an optional open chorus for marimba and vibraphone. Spanish instruments including cajón, castanets and hand clapping are also used by the players. Rosauro notes: "In the year 2001, I did a tour through Taiwan sponsored by the Ju Percussion Group. During a concert there, I shared the stage with the Amores Percussion Trio from Spain. For this occasion, I decided to write a piece in the Spanish–Flamenco mood, so that I could perform it together with Amores during the concerts we would play together in Taiwan. Valencia reflects my impression of Spain and, in particular, the state of Valencia, which I have visited several times." 15

Invisible is a pantomime composed by the percussion duo Double Drums. The group is made up of Alexander Gloeggler and Philipp Jungk, both of whom are also members of the Li Biao Percussion Group. Gloeggler and Jungk studied classical percussion at the University of Music in Munich under Prof Peter Sadlo. When they completed their graduate studies in 2004, they founded their percussion duo, which straddles the divide between music-making and entertainment and explores how—in addition to gongs, drums and marimba—boxes, buckets and cordless drills can become musical instruments.

Head Talk is a work for five-piece ensemble written by the American percussionist Mark Ford. The composer uses 13 drum heads of different sizes and materials with a variety of sticks and tapping methods to create the dynamic style of this piece. Performers sit on the floor and tap, rotate, roll and throw the drum heads into the air; even the floor beneath them becomes a percussion instrument. Head Talk requires very close interaction between the five performers. They must develop a good rapport and skillful coordination to fully express the essence of the work.

This piece poses a question to the audience: if there is no instrument, how will the player perform? The performers use body language to show us the answer.

Composed in 1997 by the German percussionist Matthias Schmitt as an homage to the rhythms of Ghana, Ghanaia has become a very popular solo for marimba. Schmitt's use of African polyrhythms combined with his European musical background make this piece a joy to play. The piece uses important 4-mallet techniques, including the double and single vertical techniques—essential skills for marimba players to master.

Composed in 1996, Ilijas is a rhapsodic composition titled after a picturesque town in the former Yugoslav republic of Bosnia. Its melody has associations with Balkan folk tunes, as well as mixed rhythms and tonal scales whose roots could be found even further East. In the introduction, the composer used a marimba technique that produces piano-like sounds. The middle part, however, uses typical marimba patterns, masterly composed in a number of various odd meters with melody in the octaves played by the right hand. The varied repetition of the opening part leads for a moment to a major key, but after that short “light of hope”, the music goes back to the melancholic mood and ends tranquillo, morendo.

Tinplay was composed by the Swedish composer Per Andréasson during the summer of 2004. Written for four percussionists, the funk-driven piece is Andréasson’s first composition for percussion. The composer is classically educated but works often as a drummer with well-known Swedish rock bands like Rednex and Royal Republic. One of his main priorities is to insert elements from pop culture into classical works to create more harmony and tonality. Tinplay mainly revolves around polymeric structures and should be performed at a driving tempo of approximately 160 BPM.

Xylophone virtuoso George Hamilton Green (1893–1970) was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Green began playing xylophone at age 11, having received plenty of encouragement from his bandleader father. Within two years, the youngster was a soloist in his father’s outfit, and upon turning 18 he headed into vaudeville, where he made an international reputation for himself as a virtuoso xylophonist. By the early 1930s, Green had begun publishing a series of solo xylophone compositions, including Cross Corners. When he retired from the music business in 1946, Green turned around and sketched a successful career for himself as an artist, illustrator, and cartoonist. That animated spirit is reflected here in the playful rhythms of Green’s Ragtime Suite, a well-loved piece that is both fun and challenging to play.

On their visit to the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the Li Biao Percussion Group plays on some 75 percussion instruments, from pitched (tuned) percussion like the timpani and the glockenspiel, to unpitched percussion like the snare drum and the gong. These include membranophones (which produce sound by vibrating a stretched membrane, like a drum) and idiophones (which produce sound by vibrating the instrument as a whole, like the marimba). Many think of percussion instruments simply as drums, and indeed the number of drums the Li Biao Percussion Group use seems endless—from African drums like the djembe, conga and darabouka to the more commonly seen drum kit standards like the tom toms, snare and bass kick drums. But there is much more to percussion beyond the drums, with many variations amongst each type of instrument. Learn more about some of the instruments featured in the show!

The snare drum is a smallish drum made of wood or brass with drumheads made of calfskin or plastic stretched over both ends of a hollow cylinder. It has a set of wire-wrapped strings stretched across the bottom head (the snare), which give the snare drum its unique "rattling" sound when the drum is hit.

Pronounced as "ka-hon", the word cajón literally means "crate, box or drawer". The Afro-Peruvian instrument creates a variety of drum sounds, including the snare sound in modern versions. Some trace its origins to African slave communities in the 16th century. One origin theory suggests that the cajón's furniture shape allowed slaves to subvert Spanish colonial bans on music and continue playing them in secret.

Castanets consist of two concave shells joined together by a string. Depending on their size, the shape, and the contact area at the tip of the castanets, different pitches can be created. The origins of castanets are not clear, but the practice of clicking items together to create sounds can be traced back to accompanying dances in Ancient Greece and Egypt.

Similar to a xylophone, a marimba is much larger in size and softer in sound. The word “marimba” originated from Bantu, an African language spoken in Mozambique and Malawi. While the sounds of the marimba may seem exotic, you might be familiar with it in the opening of ABBA’s song Mamma Mia.

The vibraphone, or “the vibes”, is a modern invention created in the 1920s, most often used for jazz music. Resonator tubes that attach to its aluminum bars have valves that can be set to spin to produce a vibrato, or pulsating, effect. The vibraphone has a pedal which sustains its sounds like a piano.

The xylophone consists of wooden bars arranged similarly to a piano. It is believed by some that the earliest form of xylophone dates back to 2000BC in ancient Southeast China. You might recognize the xylophone from cartoons and films in which the instrument is used to create the sound effects for skeletons.

In addition to their professional instruments, the members of the Li Biao Percussion Group use everyday objects to make music—from tin cans to drill bits! Many everyday objects can be used to make instruments—and you too can start your master percussionist journey at home. These are fun and creative activities that families can work on together to produce their own version of instruments seen in the show. It is also a great way to use recyclable materials to create music and art. So, it’s time to get creative as we look at some homemade percussion instruments you can make from everyday materials.
沙槌
Rumba Shaker (Maracas)

All you need is a clean tin can or a plastic bottle and some rice or beans! Put the rice or beans into the can or bottle. If it’s a tin can, seal it with a balloon secured by a rubber band. If it’s a plastic bottle, just seal it with its own cap. Within five minutes, you can have your very own rumba shaker to dance to your own rhythm!

Güiro

A güiro is an open-ended, hollow gourd with ridges; sound is made by rubbing a stick along the notches. To create your own güiro, glue together several tin cans or simply grab a plastic bottle with the label removed. For an added personal touch, design and paint the containers with acrylic paint. When the paint has dried, you can play your very own güiro using a chopstick to scrape the side. Accompany your favourite Latin American beats with this “groovy” instrument!

李飈作為世界音樂舞台上為數不多的全職敲 擊樂獨奏家，他對敲擊樂的獨特悟性和演奏 風格，為古典音樂帶來新啟發和新角度，更 被認為是當代最優秀的敲擊樂獨奏家之一。 他曾在世界著名音樂節中獨奏演出，並與世 界各地許多樂團合作，包括丹麥國家交響樂 團、巴伐利亞廣播電台交響樂團、倫敦愛樂 樂團、班貝格交響樂團、維洛納歌劇院、里 昂國家交響樂團、香港管弦樂團、新加坡華 樂團、中國國家大劇院管弦樂團等等。他亦 與著名指揮羅斯特羅波維奇、艾遜巴赫、雷 西、 福 斯 特、 諾 特 等 合 作， 亦 是 歐 洲 其 中 一個最具影響力的音樂節目《尊重，古典音 樂！》的常邀嘉賓。

Li Biao’s unique and in-depth interpretations of percussion music bring significant rediscovery and fresh insight into a well-established repertoire, making him one of the most outstanding percussion soloists in the world. Li performs an extensive range of musical work and has given a great number of solo recitals at various music festivals. He has also cooperated with renowned orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bamberg Symphoniker, Verona Opera, Orchestra National de Lyon, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra and many others around the world while working with leading conductors such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Christoph Eschenbach, Fabio Luisi, Lawrence Foster and Jonathan Nott, to name a few. Li is also a frequent guest on Achtung! Klassik, one of Europe's most influential music programmes. The 2017/18 music season featured many highlights. The Li Biao Percussion Group's July 2018 concert at the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie was a landmark event: Li was the first Chinese artist to perform in the new concert hall and brought the first concert dedicated to percussion music since the opening of the venue; tickets were sold out months in advance. Other highlights of 2017/2018 included a world tour with Fabio Luisi and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra with a stop at the 46th HKAF, as well as performances at the opening concert for the International Percussion Festival and the 2017 Belt and Road Forum Evening Gala, both held at the China National Centre for the Performing Arts. Li also took part in a full-house concert with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon in the same year. In the 2018/19 season, Li will be an artist-in-residence at the China National Center for the Performing Arts, while continuing his professorship at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns-Eisler Berlin and the China Central Conservatory of Music. Li has received numerous accolades, including the National Spirit Achievement Award in 2008; he was named a Man of Taste and Success by Men's Bazaar in 2009. Since 2015, Li has been an exclusive artist of Sony Music Entertainment.

Philipp Jungk Percussion 楊克畢業於慕尼黑國立音樂學院，跟隨薩德羅教授學習。他作為樂隊敲擊樂手，曾於 慕尼黑交響樂團和慕尼黑愛樂樂團工作，他亦以鼓手身份為德國著名流行樂隊演奏和 錄音。他與哥魯格納成立了敲擊樂團二重奏組合「雙重敲擊」，亦是李飈打擊樂團創 團成員。 Philipp Jungk graduated from the Munich Conservatory of Music and studied with Professor Peter Sadlo before joining the Munich Philharmonic and Munich Symphony Orchestra as percussionist. He has performed and recorded many pieces of modern percussion music with various renowned German percussion groups. He has also formed a percussion duo with Alex Gloeggler and is a member of Li Biao Percussion Group.

Ronni Wenzell Percussion 溫澤爾畢業於丹麥奧德瑟皇家音樂學院，目前是里約熱內盧巴西音樂學院的客席教 授。他是獨奏家和重奏成員，活躍於北歐的藝術節，敲擊鍵盤樂器是他的強項，其個 人專輯已在歐洲發行。他亦是李飈打擊樂團創團成員。 Ronni Wenzell graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Music and is presently a guest professor at Conservatório Brasileiro de Música in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As a soloist and chamber percussionist, Wenzell has performed at many music festivals across northern Europe. He is an excellent keyboardist and has also made solo percussion recordings. Wenzell is a member of Li Biao Percussion Group.

Alex Gloeggler Percussion 哥魯格納畢業於慕尼黑國立音樂學院，跟隨薩德羅教授學習。他作為樂隊敲擊樂手， 曾於斯圖加特廣播交響樂團和歌劇院工作。他成立了敲擊二人組合「雙重敲擊」，亦 是李飈打擊樂團創團成員。 Alex Gloeggler graduated from the Munich Conservatory of Music and studied with Professor Peter Sadlo. Gloeggler then joined Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Stuttgart Opera orchestra as a percussionist. He also formed a percussion duo with Phillipp Jungk and became a member of Li Biao Percussion Group.

路卡斯．貝姆 敲擊
Lukas Böhm Percussion 貝姆出生於德國，十二歲時開始在當地學習音樂，及後進入柏林音樂學院，跟隨李飈 學習敲擊，曾在歐洲許多藝術節上演奏敲擊二重奏。貝姆獲得漢堡奧斯卡及維拉．利 特基金、柏林及法蘭克福曼奴軒「現場音樂」協會和德國國家學術基金會的獎學金。 2012 年與范妮創立敲擊二人組合 DoubleBeats，是蜚聲國際的敲擊組合。 Lukas Böhm was born in Germany and began his music studies at the age of 12. He was later admitted to the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin, studying with Professor Li Biao. Böhm has performed percussion duets at many European music festivals. Currently, he is a scholarship holder of the Oscar und Vera Ritter-Stiftung Hamburg, the Yehudi Menuhin "Live Music Now" Association Berlin and Frankfurt/Main, and the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. He founded the percussion duo DoubleBeats in 2012 with partner Ni Fan, which has since become an internationally succesful percussion ensemble.

Rudi Bauer Percussion 鮑爾畢業於慕尼黑國立音樂學院，隨薩德羅教授學習，並多次獲國際大獎，曾加入巴 伐利亞廣播交響樂團，並在慕尼黑交響樂團擔任敲擊樂師。他是歐洲著名敲擊樂團 Power Percussion 的成員之一，並經常在歐洲各地舉辦獨奏音樂會。 Rudi Bauer graduated from the Munich Conservatory of Music and studied with Professor Peter Sadlo. Bauer won many national awards during his studies and has also performed solo concerts across various parts of Europe. He joined the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Munich Symphony Orchestra as a percussionist, and is also a member of Power! Percussion, a wellknown European percussion group.
