I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Since its formation in 2000, the Quartetto di Cremona has established a reputation as one of the most exciting chamber ensembles on the international stage. Regularly invited to perform at the most important festivals and concert seasons across Europe, South America, the United States and Asia, the Quartet has garnered wide acclaim from critics and audiences alike for its high level of interpretive artistry. They are a regular feature on radio and television broadcasts around the world performing their extensive repertoire, which ranges from early Haydn to contemporary music. 2017 marked the release of the final volume in their complete recording of the Beethoven quartets, on the German label Audite. Each volume attracted high levels of acclaim in the international press, with the Quartetto di Cremona unanimously considered to be the true heir of the great Quartetto Italiano. Amongst their accolades for the series was the Supersonic Award by Pizzicato Magazine, the Echo Klassik 2017 and the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) 2018. In spring 2019, they will release a new album dedicated to Schubert, including the String Quintet in C major, Op 163 with cellist Eckart Runge (Artemis Quartet) and Der Tod und das Mädchen String Quartet in D minor, D531. During the 2017/18 season, Quar tetto di Cremona made its debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with a standing ovation success, and returned to the Muziekgebouw in January 2018 for the prestigious String Quartet Biennale. The season also included tours in the United States, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan and Colombia, as well as debuts in Hamburg (Laeiszhalle) and Edinburgh. Noteworthy engagements of the 2018/19 season include performances in Berlin (Konzerthaus), Hamburg (Elbphilharmonie), Stockholm, Geneva, Manchester, Amsterdam, Valencia, New York,

They have collaborated with numerous artists of international renown, including Lawrence Dutton, Edicson Ruiz, Andrea Lucchesini, David Orlovsky, Aaron Pilsan and the Emerson String Quartet. Frequently invited to present masterclasses across Europe and the United States, the Quartetto has directed the prestigious Master’s programme for professional and advanced string quartets at the Accademia Walter Stauffer in Cremona since 2011.

For tonight's performance, however, they will be playing on the priceless "Paganini Quartet" Strads, including the Stradivarius 1727 Vioin "Paganini" (played by Christiano Gualco), the Stradivarius 1680 Violin "Paganini" (played by Paolo Andreoli), the Stradivarius 1731 Viola "Paganini" (played by Simone Gramaglia) and the Stradivarius 1736 Cello "Paganini" (played by Giovanni Scaglione), graciously loaned by the Nippon Music Foundation. In November 2015, they were awarded honorary citizenship of the city of Cremona.

Although Hugo Wolf (1860–1903) is primarily known as a masterful and prolific composer of art songs, he also ventured into the world of chamber music. Inspired by Joseph Eichendorff’s novella Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts (From the life of a slacker), Wolf fashioned the original string quartet version of his serenade with astonishing speed between 2–4 May 1887. Undoubtedly, Wolf saw a connection between the protagonist in the novella and his own life. It tells the story of a young musician who leaves his home and a grumpy father for adventures abroad. Several exploits take place at an Italian castle where “a serenade played by a small orchestra becomes a central plot mechanism”. Scholars have suggested that Wolf’s tongue-in-cheek musical caricature of the serenade created an entirely new comic genre. Linking repeated themes with recitative-like passages creates a musical narrative that seems securely anchored in the world of Italian comic opera. As such, the players become characters in an amorous comedy. It all starts with the humorous sounds of plucked and bowed open strings, suggesting the rudimentary process of tuning the instruments. Within these first eight measures of preliminary strumming—including a number of “wrong notes” for maximum comic effect—Wolf establishes the overall jovial character of this serenade. Eventually inflected by intense chromaticism and extravagant trills, a dance melody gently emerges over the continued strumming. This is contrasted by a passionate episode in the minor mode, which meanders through a variety of distant keys before leading to the restatement of the opening material. A further episode is rudely interrupted by a declamatory cello line, and after reaching a frantic climax the music gradually returns to the cheerful mood of the opening. Originally, Wolf had considered adding two additional movements, but the death of his father only a week after composing this single movement halted his music production for the remainder of 1887.

Aida is undoubtedly one of Giuseppe Verdi’s (1813–1901) grandest operatic triumphs. A substantial part of that success belongs to the soprano Teresa Stolz, who had sung the part in every Italian performance following its premiere in Cairo in 1871. In March of 1873, the opera was scheduled for performance at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. However, when the production was delayed due to a sudden illness of Stolz, Verdi used his free time to uncharacteristically compose a string quartet. He informed a friend, “I’ve written a quartet in my leisure moments in Naples…I don’t know whether the quartet is beautiful or ugly, but I do know that it’s a quartet.” Verdi, at least partially, modified his opinion in 1878. “I did not want to attach any importance to that work of mine, because I thought and still think (though I may be wrong) that the string quartet in Italy is a plant growing in the wrong climate.” Just as Wolf’s Italian Serenade, Verdi’s string quartet belongs to that curious category of chamber compositions by composers famous for other genres. For Verdi, the quartet might be regarded as a fusion of the discipline and economy demanded of the string quartet with the vocal impulse at the center of his creative imagination. The opening Allegro presents an urgently sculpted operatic melody that gradually gives way to a tender musical contrast. Essentially an operatic cavatina, the Andantino exposes a fastidiously elegant main theme that is rudely interrupted by operatic outbursts, while the Prestissimo, with its biting accents and sudden dynamic contrasts, becomes a Scherzo of demonic energy. This ferocious Scherzo is contrasted and subdued by a central Trio singing an expressive tenor aria over a simple pizzicato accompaniment. The concluding Allegro assai mosso unfolds as a grand fugal finale. A tour de force of contrapuntal dexterity, the movement gradually loses steam and terminates in a dramatic and non-contrapuntal coda. Verdi’s lone chamber work is infrequently performed, but it nevertheless occupies a unique position in the history of the quartet genre.

In human consciousness, flowers have acquired various cultural meanings and associations depending on location and social conventions. The chrysanthemum, for example, is the Mother’s Day flower in Australia, while it stands as a symbol of the Emperor and the Imperial Family in Japan. Numerous symbolisms—depending on variety and color—are attached in China, and in some European countries, foremost France, Spain and Italy, the chrysanthemum symbolizes mourning, heroism and death. And when Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) composed a short musical elegy in response to the sudden death of a friend, he powerfully appended the title Cristantemi. The friend in question—although we still don’t know the full extent of their friendship—was Amedeo di Savoia, an Italian Nobleman who had briefly ruled as the King of Spain in the 1870s. Puccini claimed to have written his singlemovement elegy for string quartet in a single night. Musically, it is based on two brooding melodies in the minor mode; the first restless and intensely chromatic, and the second mournfully emerging in the first violin over a pulsating accompaniment in the viola. Significantly, these themes ultimately found their way into Puccini’s opera Manon Lescaut of 1893. The opening theme of the quartet serves as the orchestral backdrop to Manon and her lover des Grieux wandering to their deaths in the desert of Louisiana. The soloistic second theme resurfaces in the prison duet between the ill-fated lovers in Act III.

Throughout his life, Johannes Brahms (1833– 1897) equated corporeal infirmity with frailty of character. It must have come as a great shock to him that towards the end of 1890, he fell victim for the second time within the span of 18 months to a case of influenza. The virus sometimes labeled H2N2 by twentieth-century epidemiologists was jokingly referred to as “infectious sniffles”; it originated in central Asia and spread rapidly throughout Russia and Europe. The most serious byproduct of Brahms’s influenza episode was the composer’s insistence that he was going to permanently cease all compositional activity. The viral infections also served as the catalyst for Brahms to seriously question what kind of musical legacy he was leaving behind, and how history would, or should, remember him. He selectively completed composition projects that he had been carrying in his portfolio sketchbooks, and this cleansing of his compositional palate also saw the completion of his String Quintet No 2, Op 111. When Brahms sent the completed score to his publisher N. Simrock, he appended the following instruction: “With this note, you can take leave of my music because it is high time to stop.” The pessimistic tone of Brahms’ instruction is decidedly not mirrored in the music, as sweeping optimism permeates the entire work. The soaring first theme of the opening Allegro non troppo is played by the cello, and emerges from a powerful background of oscillating chords. It develops a musical discourse of densely scored lyricism that prepares for a thematic contrast presented by paired violas. Brahms explores the contrapuntal possibilities of both themes before a spacious recap brings the movement to a forceful close. Cast as a set of variations, the principal theme of the Adagio is introduced by Brahms’ favourite string instrument, the viola. Unexpectedly shifting between major and minor keys, this movement is bathed in contemplative transparency. Blending melancholy with tranquility, the third movement, Un poco Allegretto, paves the melodic and harmonic paths for a spirited rondo finale. Full of rustic simplicity and bubbling with creative energy, this spirited Vivace is deliciously and characteristically favoured by the Hungarian czardas.

Samuel Barber’s (1910–1981) world-famous Adagio for Strings, frequently heard in the composer’s arrangement for string orchestra, actually originated as the slow movement of his first String Quartet, Op 11. Composed in 1936, the work is instantly recognised by performers and audiences for the pervasive sense of spirituality that imbued this movement. The conductor Arturo Toscanini immediately requested an orchestrated version, which was first performed by the NBC Symphony Orchestra in 1938. To further explore and accentuate its sense of spirituality, Barber even transcribed the Adagio for mixed chorus in 1967, adding the liturgical text of the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). Ever since and regardless of version, the Adagio for Strings has not only become one of the most popular concert pieces, it also is frequently used to mark occasions of public mourning. A haunting chord progression, moving at an almost static pace and evoking the solemn dignity of religious choral music, provides the expressive and harmonic background. This harmonic background, in turn, gives rise to a slowly unwinding melody. Gradually ascending and increasing in intensity, this melody is once repeated. To further increase the musical and emotional intensity, Barber skillfully provides an inverted version of the melody. Immediately following, the melody undergoes a process of expansion and embellishment, while at the same time continuing to build tension. The melody soars ever higher before reaching a tortured climax, and exhaustedly collapsing into silence. Finally, the music strikes a more conciliatory tone, and a soft and tender passage returns us to the opening melody. Slowly releasing the musical tension that had been building ever since the opening, the music transforms into an introspective meditation before fading into the dignified void of silence from which it had sprung.

The six completed string quartets by Béla Bartók (1881–1945) are considered crowning achievements of 20th century chamber music. They emerged at important junctures in the development of Bartók’s musical style, and directly correspond to significant occasions in his personal life. Following a threeyear period of compositional sterility and personal hardship, in addition to the anguish caused by WWI, Bartók composed his second string quartet between 1915 and 1917. In part, it arose from his overriding desire to fashion a musical language in which the art and folk music aspects of his creativity were allowed to find a natural equilibrium. Deeply involved in ethnographic research, Bartók wrote, “The right type of peasant music is most varied and perfect in its forms. Its expressive power is amazing, and at the same time, it is void of all sentimentality and superfluous ornaments. It is simple, sometimes primitive…and a composer in search of new ways cannot be led by a better master.” Ranking among Bartók’s most spiritual personal achievements, the second string quartet attains synthesis of folk influences and turn-of-the-century art music styles. Bartok’s colleague Zoltan Kodaly commented on the organic unity of the work: “What emerges from the successive movements is not a series of different moods, but the continual evolution of a single, coherent, spiritual process.” In fact, the haunting melody introduced by the first violin in the opening Moderato already presents all the important motivic materials of the work. As the other instruments are carefully drawn into the discussion of this subject, they continually expand the permutations offered by the principle theme. Occupying a central position in this work, the furious Allegro is a driving rondo grounded in the propulsive rhythms and returning refrains of folk music. In the manner of a peasant dance, the primary melodic material is contained within a limited range and organized around a few central pitches. The pensive and soulful Lento is once again generated from a small vocabulary of melodic gestures. Unfolding freely and straining harmonically, the music occasionally pauses to take a deep breath before it splinters into quiet fragments.

In 1794, Ignaz Schuppanzigh became Ludwig van Beethoven’s (1770–1827) violin teacher. Although a particularly handsome youth, the outstanding violist, violinist and conductor became morbidly obese in adult life. Never shy to exploit the weaknesses of others, Beethoven dedicated a short choral piece entitled Lob auf den Dicken (Hymn to the Fat One) to his teacher. None withstanding his corpulent frame, Schuppanzigh was the leader of Count Razumovsky’s private string quartet, undoubtedly the first professional ensemble of its kind. They not only premiered a number of Beethoven quartets, their regular rehearsals provided Beethoven the opportunity to fine-tune his compositions. Given the technical challenges of the last three quartets— composed on commission by Prince Nikolai Galitzin— the musical expertise of the Schuppanzigh Quartet became invaluable. Beethoven wrote his Op 135— the last major work he completed—in a burst of activity within a two-month period around October 1826. Once again, the Schuppanzigh Quartet premiered the work in March of 1828, albeit, one year after Beethoven’s death.
rhythmic unpredictability is further intensified in the trio, with sudden chromatic modulations lending this movement an almost comical appeal. By contrast, the slow movement inscribed Lento assai unfolds as a set of slow variations on a theme of elemental simplicity. Deeply contemplative, the serenity of the hymn-like melody undergoing abrupt changes in tempo, mood and key is eventually restored in a reassuring lullaby played over a gently rocking accompaniment. The finale is prefaced by a slow introduction that contains the composer’s inscription “The difficult decision”; next to the tempo indication are the words, “Must it be?” This question is taken up by the cello and the viola and answered in the Allegro proper. Here Beethoven writes, “It must be!” These three syllables form the rhythmic basis of the main theme, and appear to have been inspired by an argument between Beethoven and a friend regarding a financial transaction. Smaller in scope and lighter in character than the other late quartets, Op 135 is nevertheless a profoundly creative and energetic work. The opening Allegretto presents fluttering musical fragments that never coalesce into proper musical themes. While outwardly maintaining formal classical conventions, Beethoven relies on short and irregular phrases to imbue this movement with a sense of playfulness. Complex cross-rhythms, forcefully scattered accents and stumbling syncopations characterize the explosive scherzo. This sense of

After graduating from the Conservatorio di Musica Niccolò Paganini in Genoa, Cristiano Gualco studied violin and chamber music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and at the Stauffer Academy in Cremona with Salvatore Accardo. After winning several national and international solo competitions, his love for the quartet repertoire brought him to create the Quartetto di Cremona with his best friend and violist Simone Gramaglia. With his Quartet colleagues, Gualco is Professor at the Stauffer Academy in Cremona (String Quartet Advanced Masterclass). He plays on a beautiful 1767 G.B. Guadagnini violin (Kulturfond P. Eckes, Germany) as well as on a 1640 Nicola Amati. For tonight's performance, he will be performing on the Stradivarius 1727 Violin "Paganini".

A member of the Quartetto di Cremona since 2002, Paolo Andreoli comes from a family of musicians who encouraged him to study the violin. He attended lessons under Joseph Levin (David Oistrakh School) and Zoria Shikhmurzayeva (Moscow Conservatory) and graduated with honours from the Conservatorio di Musica Niccolò Paganini in Genoa. Both a fine soloist and chamber music interpreter, Andreoli enjoys performing classic repertoire and lesser-known, contemporary pieces. With his Quartetto colleagues, Andreoli is Professor at the Stauffer Academy in Cremona (String Quartet Advanced Masterclass). He plays a 1758 P.A. Testore violin (Kulturfond P. Eckes, Germany). Simone Gramaglia is among the best Italian viola players of his generation, mainly devoted to the ensemble he formed in 2000 with his friend Cristiano Gualco. In addition to performing with Quartetto di Cremona, he eagerly performs chamber music repertoire, collaborating with Antônio Meneses, Lawrence Dutton, Pavel Haas Quaret, Weiyin Chen and Luigi Attademo, among others. Gramaglia is a passionate viola and chamber music teacher, regularly holding master classes in Europe, the US and South America. With his Quartetto colleagues, Gramaglia is Professor at the Stauffer Academy in Cremona (String Quartet Advanced Masterclass). He plays a viola Gioachino Torazzi, ca. 1680 (Kulturfond P. Eckes, Germany). For tonight's performance, he will be performing on the Stradivarius 1731 Viola "Paganini".

Giovanni Scaglione studied cello under Michael Flaksman, Antônio Meneses, Ivan Monighetti (Hochschule für Musik Basel) and Rocco Filippini (Stauffer Academy, Cremona). He joined the Quartetto di Cremona in 2002, with which he has performed around the world in the most outstanding concert halls. Scaglione is also an appreciated soloist, often performing cello solo and chamber repertoire. With his Quartetto colleagues, he is Professor at the Stauffer Academy in Cremona (String Quartet Advanced Masterclass). He plays a rare Dom Nicola Amati 1712 cello (Kulturfond P. Eckes, Germany). Viola Associate Professor at Kalaidos University in Switzerland, Dimitri Hoffmann graduated from the Colleges of Music in Geneva and Hamburg. His professional career began in leading European orchestras such as the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under Maestro Fabio Luisi; NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under Maestro Christoph Eschenbach; Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under Maestros Vladimir Ashkenazy and Kent Nagano; Orchestre du Capitol de Toulouse under Maestros Jaap van Zweden and Tugan Sokhiev and, finally, Palau de les Arts – Opera of Valencia under Maestros Lorin Maazel and Zubin Mehta. Hoffmann is the founder of Alma Musica, an agency for music education in Europe. For over 15 years, he has helped more than 100 young gifted musicians from all over the world to continue their studies in prestigious institutions of Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Since 2013, as an artists' agent, he has been representing well-known artists such as Natalia Gutman, Elisso Virsaladze, Olga Peretyatko, Ricardo Casero and Mykola Diadiura worldwide. Hoffmann plays a Nicolo Gagliano viola ex-Vieux, made in Naples in 1760 and loaned by Alexander Snitkovski Atelier Lyon.
