衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年邁向第4 7屆。今屆藝 術節陣容鼎盛,共有超過1700名來自香港和世 界各地的藝術家傾力演出,為觀眾帶來近1 7 0 場精彩表演。 今年藝術節的節目多姿多彩,當代及古典音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇等不同形式的藝術表演共冶一 爐。每個節目從幕後製作到台前演出,均盡顯 精湛的藝術造詣和超凡的想像力。 我很高興知道最近完成活化的中區警署建築 群,即現在的大館古蹟及藝術館,會在兩個周 末呈獻約5 0場舞蹈表演,供公眾免費入場觀 賞。大家更有機會一起參與在大館的檢閱廣 場、監獄操場,甚至是監獄囚室進行的表演節 目。牛棚藝術村亦會打造為藝術共生創造社, 首度成為藝術節發展作品的平台,場內設有不 同創意領域的工作坊,觀眾並可以欣賞一些創 作中的作品,感受藝術家的多元創意。 除了精彩表演,藝術節亦一如以往,悉心籌備 各項教育和外展活動,致力培育本地藝術人 才。「香港藝術節青少年之友」計劃讓本地學 生有機會觀賞世界級的表演和參與各式各樣的 藝術活動。此外,藝術節亦透過後台參觀和大 師班等「加料節目」,讓觀眾與國際頂尖藝術 家互動接觸,了解節目的幕後製作過程。 衷心感謝香港藝術節團隊一直致力推動本港的 藝術發展,成績斐然。我亦感謝贊助商和捐款 者的大力支持,令每年的藝術節圓滿成功,大 獲好評。 謹祝二零一九年香港藝術節所有觀眾、參加者 和表演者可以盡情享受這次藝術之旅,留下愉 快難忘的回憶。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

時光之音

Quondam Quondam 在拉丁文的意思是指「另一時光」, 呼應了這個西班牙樂團以文藝復興音樂為重心 的精神。時光之音由魯珀特.戴瑪維爾指揮, 部份成員來自歐洲,是演唱古樂的專業歌手。 時光之音參與及帶領西班牙國家遺產協會和贊 諾比亞音樂學院舉辦的 #18Victoria20 計劃,以 三年為期演奏西班牙文藝復興作曲家托馬斯. 路易斯.維多利亞的《追思亡者經課》全集。 樂團目前已經完成《追思亡者經課》 1583,並 於 2 01 9 年香港藝術節演出《追思亡者經課》

1605。 2 0 1 9 年樂季,時光之音有幸邀請指揮家,亦是 塔利斯學者合唱團創辦人彼德.菲臘斯為樂團 首席客席指揮。 樂團是贊諾比亞音樂計劃的其中一部份。贊諾 比亞音樂學院為西班牙首屈一指的古樂聲樂表 演及教育機構,舉辦的課程和講座名聞遐邇。 校友包括無以復加合唱團、阿拉米爾合唱團、 古風合唱團、英國 Voces 8 合唱團,以及世界著 名大師及指揮家彼德.菲臘斯、史提芬.克勞 伯尼(劍橋大學國王學院)、大衛.史基納 ( 悉 尼.薩塞克斯學院合唱團及阿拉米爾合唱團 ) 和 約翰.魯特等。 時光之音部分年青歌手來自贊諾比亞音樂學院, 他們受戴瑪維爾的訓練及指揮,以英國主要的 古樂風格演唱。他們跟隨大師學習音樂,並曾 於劍橋夏季音樂節、羅馬巴羅克節、祟高之聲 音樂節(由十六合唱團創辦人哈利.基斯杜化 主辦)等國際音樂節演出。

Quondam is a Latin word meaning “in another time” and defines the spirit of this Spain-based professional group specialising in Renaissance music. It is made up of some of Europe’s finest professional Early Music singers under the direction of Rupert Damerell. The group is the leading participant in the project #18Victoria20, organised by Spain’s Patrimonio Nacional and Zenobia Música, which offers the complete cycle of masses by the Spanish renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria over a period of three years. As a participant in the project, Quondam has already performed the 1583 Requiem during the first cycle and will perform the 1605 Requiem at this Festival. In 2019, Quondam is privileged to have Peter Phillips, conductor and founder of The Tallis Scholars, as its primary guest director. The group is part of the Zenobia Música project, the leading Spanish private institution for Early Music vocal performance and education. Previous faculty includes groups such as Ensemble Plus Ultra, Alamire, Stile Antico, Voces8 and world-class maestros and composers such as Peter Phillips, Stephen Cleobury (King's College, Cambridge), David Skinner (Sidney Sussex College Choir and Alamire), and John Rutter, among others. Some of the singers of Quondam were recruited from the Zenobia Scholars, a group of young singers conducted and trained by Rupert Damerell to sing in the style of the major British Early Music ensembles. In addition to attending courses and studying with the above mentioned maestros, the Scholars have sung in international festivals that include the Cambridge Summer Music Festival, Roma Festival Barocco and Sounds Sublime Festival, directed by Harry Christophers (The Sixteen).

Rupert Damerell began his musical career as a chorister at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, where he commenced his organ studies aged ten, having already started studying the piano at age four and violin at age six. From there, he went on to Eton College with a music scholarship. He also studied violin at the Juilliard School in New York and became a member of the UK’s National Youth Orchestra. He later read music at King's College, Cambridge, where he was a countertenor choral scholar in its word-famous choir, under the direction of Stephen Cleobury. During his time there, he appeared on various recordings. Since childhood, Damerell has enjoyed maintaining a wide variety of musical activities through studying various instruments. He has studied violin under the instruction of Jean Harvey and Clarence Myerscough (Royal Academy of Music), Dorothy Delay (The Juilliard School), and Wolfgang Marschner (Freiburg, Germany); piano under David Owen Norris and Jean Harvey (Royal Academy of Music); and organ under Thomas Trotter, John Harper, Naji Hakim and Stephen Cleobury. For vocals, he has studied under the instruction of Ashley Stafford (Royal College of Music), Emma Kirkby, Evelyn Tubb, and Michael Chance. His studies in direction have been with Anthony Hopkins, Peter Phillips and Paul Goodwin, among others. Damerell has been based in Madrid, Spain since 2002, singing with various early music groups throughout Europe, such as Huelgas Ensemble, Opera Fuoco, Los Músicos de su Alteza, Proyecto Guerrero or Capilla Príncipe de Viana. Recently, he has also collaborated with Alamire and Ensemble Plus Ultra. Damerell directs various choirs and ensembles in Spain, including Zenobia Consort, Zenobia Scholars, Quondam, and the instrumental group Palmyra Ensemble. He is very active in the field of education, giving seminars to choral conductors and singers, as well as co-directing choral courses and projects in Spain with directors and groups such as David Skinner and Alamire, Stephen Cleobury, John Rutter, Ensemble Plus Ultra, Stile Antico and Voces8. He also co-directs the Tallis Scholars Summer Course with Peter Phillips every summer in Ávila, Spain and has been artistic director of the International Music Festival of Las Navas del Marqués since 2010. ©Antonio Villar

The musical life of 16th century Spain was very different from other European countries. In Italy, after the decline of the Medici in Florence, the Vatican and Venice were the two rival centres of excellence. In England, all the musicians gravitated towards the Chapel Royal, and in Germany to the courts in Munich or Dresden. In Spain, the Emperor Charles V, who was born and raised in Flanders, did not even speak Spanish when he assumed the throne in 1516 at the age of 16. When he arrived, he brought with him his court and musicians from Flanders, and this state of affairs would continue for the rest of his life and be taken over by his son, Philip II. As Holy Roman Emperor, he spent much time travelling all over Europe, and the Capilla Real musicians would travel with him. Without the possibility of royal employment, the Spanish cathedrals were the centres of musical activity, with the greatest foundations being in Seville and Toledo. Today’s programme highlights three composers, all of whom started their musical life as choirboys in Seville Cathedral: Cristóbal de Morales (1500– 1553), Francisco Guerrero (1528–1599) and Alonso Lobo (1555–1617). Morales received instruction in Seville Cathedral as a boy from Francisco de Peñalosa, who was steeped in the Franco-Flemish tradition led by Josquin des Prez and Pierre de la Rue, popular throughout Europe. After short appointments in Ávila and Plasencia, Morales was employed in Rome in the Papal choir until about 1545, together with such musicians as Jacques Arcadelt or Nicolas Gombert (the future maestro de capilla of Charles V’s Royal Chapel). On returning to Spain, Morales was maestro de capilla in Toledo, where he would teach the adolescent Francisco Guerrero, and then in Marchena and Málaga. His somewhat difficult personality resulted in frequent changes of employment.

Morales’ writing reflects his upbringing and the Franco-Flemish style, with often dense counterpoint and writing for lower voices. We begin the programme with the Regina cæli, the hymn to the Virgin for the Easter period, where soprano and alto lines sing the Gregorian chant in a canon. This is followed by the Parce mihi from his fourvoice Requiem, a direct prayer for forgiveness with text from the Book of Job, made world-famous by the collaboration in 1993 between the Hilliard Ensemble and jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek. The third work is a sonorous setting of the Marian prayer Sancta et immaculata virginitas in four voices. This work is the basis for a setting of the Ordinary (those movements that always occur, without textual variation) of the Mass by Morales’ student, Francisco Guerrero. Guerrero also started out as a choirboy in Seville Cathedral, moving to Toledo to study when his voice changed and taking on his first cathedral

post in Jaén at the age of just 17, moving back to Seville three years later. He stayed there on and off for the rest of his life, having been given unusual liberty to travel around Spain, Italy and the Holy Land. Fortunately, in his later years he had an able assistant to cover his frequent absences at Seville Cathedral in the form of Alonso Lobo. Guerrero’s parody mass, Sancta et immaculata, adds a second soprano line to brighten up Morales’ sound world, and even though this work was published in 1566—many years after its model— it retains Morales’ close, dense polyphonic style that was popular prior to the Council of Trent and its Counter-Reformation changes, which sought to simplify polyphony so that the texts could be clearer. This new style can be heard clearly in the motet Surge propera with its text from the Old Testament paean to love, “The Song of Songs”. In the 16th century, the Catholic Church ascribed this text to act as a metaphor for the relationship between Christ and the Church. Guerrero goes one stage further by having a repeated phrase sung by a soprano in long notes to the text, “Come, bride of Christ”, descending each repetition in the first part of the motet, and ascending again in the second part. One of Guerrero’s most joyous motets is Maria Magdalena for Easter Day in six voices, which tells of how Mary goes to the tomb of Jesus, finds it empty and sees the angel. Again, as is typical in this period, there are two parts to the motet, and, as with Morales’ Regina cæli, each phrase of text is interrupted by cascades of “Alleluia”. Alonso Lobo, unlike Morales and Guerrero, did not spend any time in Rome. However, thanks to the maturation of printing, music was far more widely disseminated around Europe than at the beginning of the 16th century, also finding its way to the New World. Because of this, he was aware of the music of Palestrina, probably already from his time as a boy in Seville Cathedral, and his personal style could be said to combine the Italian’s smooth contrapuntal technique with the proto-Baroque intensity of his contemporary, Tomás Luis de Victoria.

The Mass Maria Magdalena uses thematic material from Guerrero’s motet. In the Spanish tradition post-Trent, the Agnus Dei music is only given once, and would have been sung twice, the second time with “Dona nobis pacem”. Liturgically, it would have been possible to have a second, Gregorian chant Agnus Dei, or even an organ interlude. The Lamentations from the Book of Jeremiah are texts used for the Office of Tenebrae during Holy Week. Lobo set the texts for the Saturday office— which are not quite as depressing as those for the Thursday or Friday offices—as we are now looking forward to the Resurrection. The complete text is set as one long work, rather than several separate pieces (such as those of Victoria, Carlo Gesualdo or Orlande de Lassus), following the traditions at Seville Cathedral. Traditionally with the Lamentations, each verse of the text is punctuated by a Hebrew letter, and this enables Lobo to set the scene for the following passage and to provide contrasts with "pure" music. Ego flos campi (I am the flower of the field) is another text from the “Song of Songs” that is almost madrigalian in character. We then bring the programme to an end with a setting of the same text by Lobo’s master, Guerrero, for double choir. The “Song of Songs” texts gave composers an excuse to compose with more word painting and affects like the Italian madrigalists. Even Palestrina, who wrote a set of 29 motets on these texts, claimed that he changed from his normal style in these works; a rare chance for these composerpriests (all three of our composers in today’s programme were also priests) to let their hair down just a little. 維多利亞的安魂曲

Victoria’s Requiem 托馬斯.路易斯.維多利亞(1548 – 1611)生 於西班牙阿維拉,父親在城中擔任公證人。維 多利亞八歲加入阿維拉大教堂唱詩班;兩年後, 另一位未來作曲家薩巴斯蒂安.德.維萬柯也 加入同一唱詩班。 維多利亞肯定是個出類拔萃的學生,因為他變 聲之後,獲腓力二世頒發獎學金負笈羅馬,在 新成立的日耳曼神學院求學。日耳曼神學院由 國王出資成立,目的是與歐洲北部的新教競爭。 無論學習音樂,還是全年的宗教慶典,日耳曼 神學院的學生都會跟羅馬學派或羅馬神學院的 學生一起參與;維多利亞大概就在這時得到羅 馬神學院樂長帕萊斯特里納指導。數年後,維 多利亞成了帕萊斯特里納在神學院的繼任人, 然後也陸續接任帕萊斯特里納的其他職位。

Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548–1611) was born in Avila, Spain, the son of the city’s notary. Aged about eight, he became one of the choirboys in Ávila’s cathedral, where he would be joined two years later by the future composer Sebastian de Vivanco. He must have been an exceptional student since, when his voice broke, he was granted a scholarship by Philip II to study at the newly formed German Seminary in Rome, which the King funded in his battle against the Protestantism of northern Europe. The students of the German seminary joined those of the Roman school for the study of music and the celebration of religious feasts throughout the year, and Victoria at this time would have received instruction from the maestro de capilla: the great Palestrina. A few years later, Victoria would take over that job from Palestrina, and subsequently other positions held by the master. Aged just 24, in 1572 he published his first collection of music—more than thirty motets—and over the following years various other books of music for the divine office, Masses and music for Holy Week. By 1585, however, he yearned to return to Spain, but refused maestro de capilla posts offered by the Seville and Saragossa Cathedrals, hoping for a royal favour—maybe at the newly built Monastery of El Escorial, close to the new capital city of Madrid. However, his chance came when the Empress Maria, King Philip’s sister, was widowed and decided to withdraw to the sumptuous Royal Convent of the Descalzas (Barefoot Clarissa nuns) in Madrid. Philip enabled Victoria to become the Empress’s personal chaplain and unofficial maestro of an exceptionally well-endowed chapel, where he had time to compose and experiment with his music. The position was also considerably better paid, through various benefices, than what any

cathedral could offer at that time. This financial stability enabled Victoria to pursue his interest in publishing and selling his own music, an expensive and risky undertaking. He was granted two years’ sabbatical from 1592–1594 to return to Rome to supervise a new edition of his music, and where he was also present for Palestrina’s funeral. On returning to Madrid, Victoria worked on a series of Masses for double and triple choir, enjoying the excellent choir he had at his disposal. Based on Marian antiphons he had composed in Rome nearly 20 years earlier, these were published in Madrid in 1600. The Empress died in 1603, and for her public funeral rites three weeks after her death, Victoria provided the Officium Defunctorum. This contains all the music for the Ordinary of the Requiem Mass itself, together with a Lectio with text from the Book of Job, which belongs to the Matins liturgy performed in the vigil before the mass, an extra-liturgical motet Versa est in luctum also with a text from Job, which would have been sung as the dignitaries saluted the catafalque (the Empress’s body had already been buried in a simple ceremony in the Convent three days after her death), and the final Responsory for the Absolution. Victoria, in common with other composers of his time, did not set the sequence to Dies irae— which would become so popular in the Requiems of Mozart or Verdi—but, in this case, that would have been sung during the mass to Gregorian chant. The Requiem chant is present throughout the work, carried mostly by one of the two soprano lines in long notes (in the Offertorium, the altos take the melody) as the other voices weave around it in slow-moving harmonies, employing the traditional cantus firmus techniques from the early Renaissance, but infusing them with almost baroque expression and affects—truly a meeting between the horizontal and the vertical.
