I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

希薇雅．佩瑞茲．克露絲在西班牙帕拉弗魯赫 爾音樂學校學習音樂理論、鋼琴和中音薩克斯 管，師從曼紐爾．曼魯吉爾。她的母親格羅瑞 亞．克露絲是一名藝術史學家及教師，亦是藝 術學校 Alar t 的創辦人。佩瑞茲．克露絲在十二 至十六歲入讀該學校。她的父親卡斯托爾．佩 瑞茲是加利西亞吉他手，專研哈巴奈拉舞曲。 父母二人組成雙人組合，創作《夜妝》、《逝 去的時光》等歌曲。 年少時，佩瑞茲．克露絲和父親不時在卡萊利 亞的酒吧獻唱《親愛的羅拉》一曲。她亦曾在 放克、巴薩諾瓦及爵士樂隊演奏薩克斯管，並 於六月之夜合唱團演唱，合唱團巡演意大利、 匈牙利、法國及挪威。 佩瑞茲．克露絲十八歲遷居巴塞隆拿，入讀音 樂工作坊，學習卡宏鼓、佛蘭明高、和聲和爵 士樂，並在課餘時間學習薩克斯管。她十九歲 入讀加泰隆尼亞音樂學院，向米雷亞．羅拉及 卡爾米．卡內拉學習爵士樂演唱。

Sílvia Pérez Cruz studied music theory, piano and alto saxophone at the Escola de Música de Palafrugell in Spain under the instruction of Manuel Manogil. Her mother, art historian and teacher Glòria Cruz, founded the arts school Alart, where Pérez Cruz studied from age 12 to 16. Her father, Cástor Pérez, was a Galician guitarist specialising in habanera songs; both father and mother formed a duo that composed the songs Vestida de Nit and Temps perdut. Young Pérez Cruz and her father occasionally sang La Bella Lola in a bar in Calella, Spain. During her teenage years, she played the saxophone in funk, bossanova and jazz groups, and sang in the choir Nit de Juny, which toured in Italy, Hungary, France and Norway. Pérez Cruz moved to Barcelona at 18, where she studied cajón, flamenco, harmony and jazz at the Taller de Músics while continuing private saxophone studies. At age 19, she started her training in jazz vocals at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) under the instruction of Mireia Lara and Carme Canela. Pérez Cruz’s first concerts in Barcelona were with pianist Sergi Sirvent and dancer Damián Muñoz in

2001. During the next ten years, she sang in more than ten groups in styles that ranged from flamenco to traditional Catalan music, jazz, folk and traditional South American music. These projects included the bands Las Migas and Coetus and the projects Llama, En la Imaginación and Immigrasons. In 2011, Pérez Cruz shifted her focus to more personal work and began writing an homage to her late father, producing the disc 11 de novembre, on which she served as composer, vocalist, arranger and co-producer. The album received various awards, such as the Premio Internacional Terenci Moix 2012 and a Golden Disc Award. Her cross-disciplinary collaborations include dance compositions with Damián Muñoz and Israel Galván and theatre productions with Joan Ollé, Julio Manrique and Lluís Homar. In the cinema, she contributed vocals to the soundtrack for Pablo Berger’s Snow White (2012), winner of the Goya Award for Best Original Song. In 2015, she served as actor, singer and composer on Eduard Cortés’ film Cerca de tu casa. Pérez Cruz has also collaborated with artists such as Hamilton de Holanda, Joan Manuel Serrat, Lluís Llach, Jorge Drexler, Gino Paoli and Rocío Molina, amongst others. In 2014, she released the album Granada (Universal Music) with Raül Fernández Miró, which received a Golden Disc Award. Her work on Cerca de tu casa led to the recording of Domus (Universal Music, 2016), which received the Biznaga de Plata for Best Soundtrack at Málaga’s Cinema Festival (2016), the Best Original Soundtrack at PÖFF in Tallin (2016), the Gaudí Best Soundtrack (2017) and the Goya Prize for Best Original Song with Ai, ai, ai (2017). On her most recent recording, Vestida de Nit (Universal Music, 2017), she sings accompanied by a string quintet, combining classic songs with new compositions arranged by Javier Galiana de la Rosa, Joan Antoni Pich, Carlos Montfort and Pérez Cruz herself. Vestida de Nit has toured successfully to Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Portugal, Turkey, Italy, Japan and France, and has been performed in more than 40 Spanish cities from 2017–2018.

The soulful crooning of accomplished Catalonian singer Sílvia Pérez Cruz brings richly layered interpretations of European singing traditions to her latest album, Vestida de Nit. In the lead-up to her performance of the album at the 2019 HKAF, Pérez Cruz shares the creative stories behind her music. What’s the story behind the album’s title song, Vestida de Nit? Vestida de Nit (Dressed by the Night, in the sense of putting on the night as a dress) is a song that was composed by my parents: the lyrics are from my mother, Glòria Cruz, and the music is from my father, Càstor Pérez. The song might be my age, around 35 years old. The lyrics talk about the landscape where I am from, my territory, the people, sea, pine trees,

sailors, love, yearning, colours…and it is a song that was part of my life, a kind of a soundtrack to my childhood, but I never paid attention to it. That changed in 2010, when I did a concert with my father and we sang this song. People started to ask me for it as an encore at my concerts…to the point that there’re people who think that it is a traditional Catalonian folk song. My mother told me that her favourite arrangement was the one that Joan Antoni Pich (the cello player) had done for this string quintet line-up, and that was the reason why I recorded it on the album. The string accompaniment was done without sheet music. What motivated that choice? This album was recorded with string quintet and voice only, in only two days. When we started to do concerts, it was clear to me that playing by memory gets everything into another dimension, because you forget the codes of the image, of the paper, of the music stand, and you focus more on what you feel and on listening to the other musicians—on the fact of transmitting. Not all the musicians were very happy at the beginning, but once I convinced them, the step forward in quality was very noticeable. The project got better in emotion, sound, and improvisation. We were more ourselves, individually and as a collective. Because the tempo was different every time, we breathed together, we were one person, and it didn’t make sense to play and record it individually. All in all, it was not easy, but it was one of the best decisions I took on this project.

How does music help you in communicating with different audiences, especially for those that may not understand the languages in which you sing? It is said that music is a universal language, but I believe it is emotion that is the universal language, and that music is a great transmitter of these emotions. This is why it is marvellous when you travel abroad and know that almost nobody is understanding your language, but you can still see the audience connecting with the emotion that you are transmitting, something that’s beyond words. Music has this gift: it means more than words, it can reach far places. It's like love, somehow. What types of music can we expect from you in the future? I believe I am a woman with no prejudices, and that I conduct myself from the stomach and the heart (even though I have a very mental approach once I am preparing a project). I am mainly a person that loves music and art, and when I fall in love with something, I don’t really care about the style or genre, so… everything is possible…everything is possible. 我為這首歌編曲、寫詞，付出了很大心血，
This is a song for which I wrote the lyrics and music. It took a lot of me to compose it, but I am very proud of the result. It is the first of my compositions that makes an explicit social criticism and talks about power relationships. I drew inspiration from the poets Federico García Lorca and Chicho Sánchez Ferlosio. The song is part of the original soundtrack of the movie Cerca de tu casa, by the filmmaker Eduard Cortés, which is about the Spanish housing crisis that began in 2008. Like the song, the film focuses on the theme of people that lose their jobs and are pushed out of their homes by the banks and government when they can no longer afford to pay their mortgages.

我的父母在三十多年前寫了這首歌。我小時
My parents wrote this song more than 30 years ago. It used to bore me when I was little, but as an adult it has stayed with me, always protecting me like a snail shell, but with open windows. My father wouldn’t believe me when I told him I am asked to play it and people know the words and sing along…Mum wouldn’t either. I still hadn't included it on any album because I knew it had to be done with the right people who would know how to caress the tune with time. Joan Antoni Pich has played it with me often; he knows its heartbeat, he understands it. He even once played it with my dad at a Habanera gathering in Palafrugell. It was a must for him to help arrange the track. My mum loves this version of the song as well.

The lyrics are from a great Catalan poet called Ana María Moix, who I was lucky enough to meet in person. When she passed away, a documentary about her was being made, and they asked me to put music to this poem; I didn’t hesitate for a second. The poem is about her own death, but without dramatics. At the time of writing the music, the inspiration came from Mexican ranchera songs, which approach grief in a way that makes performers sing louder. They treat death with much more colour and acceptance than we Europeans.

我和這首歌走了很長的路，以不同形式演奏
This song has gone a long way with me, and I play it in many different formats. I discovered it in 2009 during a concert I did with the Brossa Cuartet, dedicated to the Brigades veterans, still alive after the Spanish Civil War. [The black cock symbolises General Franco’s forces, while the red cock represents the resistance.] We covered an extensive set list for that show, but for me this song stands proudly from the rest, and I have not been able to stop playing it. Then, I performed it with Coetus for years (in fact, it was featured on one of the albums of this Iberian percussion band) and, later on, with my quintent: Dani Espasa (piano), Miquel Àngel Cordero (double bass), Aleix Tobías (percussion) and Joan Antoni Pich (cello). The arrangement I made for the quintet served as the basis for the strings arrangement. I currently perform it with the quintet but also alone with my guitar. Along with Vestida de Nit, it is, by far, one of the songs most requested by the audience.

This is a beautiful song that I discovered on the album Despegando by Enrique Morente. He was an amazing singer with roots in the flamenco tradition who bravely pushed his music further into the unknown; he passed away a few years back. On the album, Pepe Habichuela accompanied him on guitar—a great guitar player, very authentic, very pure, and also brave (and with whom I have been lucky enough to sing); he still performs with his wisdom, generosity and ingenuity. I love the music of the song for its dynamics and melodic movements, and I also love the lyrics, which assert that a better world is possible, “without rifles, without poisons”.

Artist’s Note
這首歌有一個有趣的故事。當我完成愛華
This song has a funny story. When I finished the soundtrack for Eduard Cortés’ Cerca de tu casa and the film shooting and editing had already wrapped, the producer, Loris Omedes, asked me to help pen a song to replace the music for a girls’ dancing scene (originally it was a Shakira song, but they didn’t have enough budget to cover the music rights). It was not an easy commission, because the feel and the rhythm had to align with the action, which had already been filmed. I wrote it in English, inspired by the original rhythm, but lyric-wise I tried to depict a girl's vision after suffering an eviction as a harbinger of the future movie plot. I wrote it one afternoon in Madrid. Funnily enough, this song won the 2017 Goya Award for Best Original Song. It was previously featured on my album Domus, together with other tracks from the film. Many months before I was awarded, I decided to record it again for my new album because I really like the string arrangement: far apart from the original, it’s a breath of fresh air against the high intensity of the full album track list.

艾琳娜．雷 1986 年出生於西班牙巴塞隆拿。她在 2001 到 2011 年期間分別就讀加泰 隆尼亞音樂學院、李世奧音樂學院和索菲婭王后音樂學院。雷是達妮亞四重奏、卡達 克斯室樂團、Funktion 樂團和室內樂團的成員。她自 2014 年起跟隨希薇雅．佩瑞茲． 克露絲巡迴演出。 Elena Rey was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1986. She studied at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, Conservatori Superior del Liceu and the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía from 2001 to 2011. Rey is a member of the Dalia Quartet, Orquestra de Cadaqués, Ensemble Funktion and Orchestra Da Camera. She has toured with Sílvia Pérez Cruz since 2014.

In 2008, he graduated from the Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona with a Bachelor of Performance and continued to study music at Berklee College of Music in Boston and Valencia, Spain. He co-founded the duo Clementina in 2012, and recorded and produced their first album Darrere del vent. He has toured with Sílvia Pérez Cruz for four years across Latin America and Europe and recorded on her album Vestida de Nit in Barcelona in 2017.

He studied music in Badalona Conservatory, Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona, Madrid Conservatory, and the Royal Conservatory of the Hague, Netherlands. From 2001 to 2018, he regularly collaborated with Barcelona Symphony and Liceu Symphony Orchestras. He was appointed cello teacher at the Escola de Música de Barcelona in 2005 and at Oriol Martorell Arts School in 2009. In 2010, he performed in Sílvia Pérez Cruz’s concert for the first time, followed by continuous collaboration in the recording of three albums and concerts as a part of different line-ups in venues across Europe and South America.

He is a versatile player, working with orchestras, chamber orchestras and chamber ensembles. Nowadays, he is co-soloist of the National Classical Orchestra of Andorra, soloist of the Chamber Orchestra Terrassa 48 and a close collaborator of the Liceu’s Grand Orchestra, amongst many others.
