I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

“We all know that something is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars... Everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings...There is something, way down deep that’s eternal about every human being...And that’s what’s left when memory is gone.”
Neuroscience Professor Kate Jeffery and was inspired by interviews and workshops with organisations such as the Alzheimer's Society. While the medium of performance may be an unusual resource for the transmission of science, it shines a light on issues around memory that offers a new perspective, and creates links between the science and the real human experience.

Director Guillaume Pigé comments, “The Nature of Forgetting is not about dementia. It is about the fragility of life and that eternal ‘something’ we all share that is left when memory is gone. Our collaboration with Professor Jeffery and our interviews with people living with dementia and their carers have resulted in a life-affirming journey into a weakening mind, where broken does not have to mean defeated.”
Following a sell-out run at the 2017 London International Mime Festival, Theatre Re’s The Nature of Forgetting is a powerful, explosive and joyous piece about what is left when memory and recollection are gone. It was part of the British Council Edinburgh Showcase 2017. Tom is living with early onset dementia and has just turned 55. As his daughter helps him dress for his birthday party, tangled threads of disappearing memories spark him into life, unravelling as a tale of friendship, love and guilt. This ambitious project with actors, mimes and musicians has been created in collaboration with UCL

Does performance provide a good space for the public discussion of ideas?
flavour of the answer, and that flavour turned out to be more real and tangible than any answers.
I think performance is a good trigger for fascinating discussions because it helps us to develop our empathy. It helps us to put ourselves in someone else's shoes and see the world through his or her eyes.
What was the development process like for the show?
With The Nature of Forgetting, we don't pretend that we portray on stage what it is like to be living with early onset dementia, but we give a glimpse of what it can be like. We provide a change of perspective, and that change can be enlightening and lead to the public discussion of ideas, such as why provide extensive care for people living with dementia, what sort of care is needed and also how to train people to be more dementia-friendly. It is as if the role of the artist is to unveil inner truths about the human condition and share the result of his or her exploration with an audience. Performance seems to be a rehearsal for life. How did you become interested in the performing arts? I first trained as an actor and then as a director, and then I fell in love with mime. To me, mime is about making a portrait of something—a thought, an idea, an emotion—with something else—a body, an object, a voice. It is about creating metaphors on stage to communicate, and I find it to be the most beautiful and powerful thing in the world because it triggers the audience's imagination. With The Nature of Forgetting, our main question was: what is left when memory is gone? We did not find the answer. So we made a show about it! In other words, we created a metaphor to give a

As a company, we work very collaboratively; we take time and we constantly open the doors of our rehearsal room to share and test our work. We engaged with a lot of people throughout the development process. A lot of the work happened in rehearsal, but many discoveries were also made while researching the project, interviewing experts in the fields of memory and public health, and engaging with people living with dementia and their carers. When in the rehearsal room, we started by moving and improvising. A few objects became very rapidly central to the piece, like the wooden school desks. Most of our initial little scenes did not make much sense and were completely unrelated. It was only little by little, through constant and regular adjustments and dramaturgy sessions, that very slowly a piece appeared. It seems very similar to sculpting in that sense. Dr Kate Jeffery is a Behavioural Neuroscience Professor at the University College London. She shared with us her collaborative experience with Theatre Re on The Nature of Forgetting. What, from the perspective of a scientist, is the nature of forgetting? This is a good question with no easy answer. Forgetting occurs when a memory can’t be retrieved, but the question of whether the memory is still intact but inaccessible, present but degraded, or gone forever, is still being actively researched. Also, it turns out the memory is a many-headed beast—memory of what you had for breakfast is a different kind of memory than knowing the words to a song, or how to drive a car, or recognising someone whose name eludes you. That means forgetting is not just one thing either. There are many ways to forget. How did the collaboration happen, and what about the story attracted you? The collaboration came about when Guillaume approached me to talk about what memory is, from a scientific perspective. He then invited me to talk to the group about our scientific understanding, and things developed from there. I was attracted by the challenge of trying to convey something so complex with such an ephemeral art form. I had no idea what “physical theatre” was when we started out, and then when it was explained to me I couldn’t even begin to imagine how it could be used to convey dementia. I know now! I am beyond amazed at the skill of Guillaume and his team in creating such an emotional and thought-provoking experience. What insights did you offer to the production team during the creative process, especially on portraying dementia behaviours in theatrical ways?

O n e o f t h e i n s i g h t s wa s t h e i d e a o f t h e hippocampus—this is a part of the brain critical for episodic memory (memory of life events) and it is the part that degenerates first in Alzheimer’s dementia. One of the roles of the hippocampus is to create a mental map of space, which forms the framework for a memory (if in the past), perception (if in the present) or plan (if in the future). In trying to explain the hippocampus, I drew upon the analogy of a stage on which the elements of a memory are assembled—starting with where the event occurred and then adding the details. From this idea came the notion that the central character in the play would play out his—now decaying—memories on a stage, and that each scene would be constructed on the fly by the characters. The emotional dysregulation (for example the wild swings from placid to distraught) is another facet of dementia that is incredibly well portrayed. We also drew upon the idea of temporal ordering of the memories, because there is increasing evidence that the hippocampus stores the approximate order in which life events occurred. To try and convey this we used the analogy of the rack of clothes holding items of clothing extending back in time, to convey this and also to help the audience locate the scenes in the life of the character. During the production process, what was the greatest challenge for you and the team ? The greatest challenge for me was the tension that inevitably arises between scientific accuracy and theatrical aesthetic. I think that in the end we struck a good balance, managing to convey the general phenomenology while also creating a dramatic and emotional story.
As the show unfolds, we come to see Tom’s interaction with his family, friends and lover, but their scenes are always fragmented, intertwined and abruptly over. How does this reflect the nature of memory? I think this characterizes normal memory to some extent, as well as abnormal memory. In Tom’s case, the memories did not always come when he called them, and were often not well-formed— but that is somewhat true for normal memory too. One thing we have learned over the years is that memory recall is nothing like playing a videotape, although it feels that way. It is much more like quickly building a stage set and populating it with the scenery and characters you know should be there, and having them play out a scene. Often the brain makes up the story if it can’t remember the details—or it creates details that it thinks should have been there even if they weren’t. The more we learn about memory, the more made-up and ephemeral—indeed, theatrical—it seems. It’s a little scary.

We are seeing more theatrical productions looking at dementia nowadays; do you think theatre—specifically mime—is an appropriate medium for such a discussion? I think theatre is an excellent medium with which to explore this issue. Of course, it needs to be handled sensitively, as it is such an emotional topic. Just about everyone leaves The Nature of Forgetting having shed a tear or two—it touches on the deepest issues of who we are and how we live and love. Also, in this day and age almost everybody has been affected by dementia in one way or another. We do need to examine what it means for us, and art is such an important way of doing this. Mime is incredibly dynamic and direct, and the music connects it directly to the emotions. It’s a very powerful experience and strangely uplifting, despite the tragedy of the story. Guillaume Pigé is an actor, director, mime and magician. He formed Theatre Re in 2009. Pigé trained at the Conservatory of Villeurbanne in France and graduated from the International School of Corporeal Mime in London under the direction of Corinne Soum and Steven Wasson. He also studied with Thomas Leabhart and Daniel Stein. Pigé holds an MA in Text and Performance Studies from King’s College London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Apart from directing and performing in all Theatre Re’s productions to date, Pigé worked as a Movement Director with Andrew Visnevski, Sue Dunderdale and Bill Gaskill. He is an Associate Teacher at RADA, and Head of Movement at Fourth Monkey Actor Training Company. He is regularly invited to give workshops in the UK and internationally. Pigé was recently c o m m i s s i o n e d by Th e N a t i o n a l Theatre (UK) to produce a new literal translation of Tartuffe by Molière. Pigé is an @HOME Artist at The Point, Eastleigh.

His score for The Little Soldiers received an Off West End Best Sound Design award nomination. Other recent composition credits include commissions by the Roundhouse Choir and Fourth Monkey Theatre Company, and performances at Sadler’s Wells Theatre and the European Cultural Congress. Judd is an experienced session musician who performs with a wide variety of artists including Austentatious, Bastien Keb and Bright Light Bright Light. He also works as an accompanist for the Middlesex University Dance Division. Judd is the founding member of jazz trio Future Gold.

Dick's Electric Dreams, Silent Witness, X-Files: Cold Cases for Audible and Derren Brown's Ghost Train. Malik started collaborating with Theatre Re in 2012, during the creation of The Little Soldiers, which saw him perform onstage as well as design the Offie Award-nominated costumes for the show. Becoming an Associate Artist in 2013, he has worked on three of Theatre Re's shows (BIRTH being his fourth), providing conceptual ideas and creating costumes and props.

Other recent design credits include: MADHOUSE Re: Exit (Access All Areas); Space. Planets. Stars. (Melanie Spencer/Athena Swan); and No’s Knife (Lincoln Centre, NY). She has a PhD in Lighting from The University of Leeds and has published work about the agency of light in performance in the Theatre and Performance Design Journal and Contemporary Theatre Review. She is also a lecturer in theatre at the Department of Theatre, Film and Television in the University of York.

As the lyricist for Barlow & Smith, her works include Lock & Key at VAULT Festival and Christmas in the City. Smith holds a BA from Harvard and an MA from RADA/King's College London and is co-founder of the London Playwrights' Workshop.

Belafonte is the co-founder of Ephemeral Ensemble, where she codirected and performed in Carsick, and their latest performance, OFFSTAGE.

As a regular session musician, he has performed and recorded on albums with top UK folk and acoustic acts, including Blair Dunlop, Jackie Oates, John Parker and The Luck. He has worked at some of the UK’s top recording studios, including Real World, Sleeper Sounds, Gighouse, Record Live, Richard Evan's Studio and more. As a graduate of Trinity Laban, London, Webster has collaborated extensively with contemporary dancers, composing and performing sound scores for Natalie Su Company and Scatterlings, and performing at TedX Manchester University. Henry Webster is a member of Berlin-based minimalist band ARVO, which released its debut album The Close in 2017. Webster has recently launched his new solo electronic project, Tarsier. Many years in the making, Tarsier is a unique house- and electronica-influenced project based around the violin as a 21st century solo instrument.

She graduated from RADA’s MA Theatre Lab course in 2014 and has worked with Theatre Re on an ongoing basis since 2015. Wilcox is an Associate Artist with Dirty Rascals and is currently developing several projects with them, including Crimson Wave—Craft The Resistance, a piece which dances somewhere between theatre, workshop and installation. She has also worked extensively with international collective Bez Kinte, devising and performing in BREAKS, which was performed at the Dublin Fringe 2016, before being commissioned and recorded as a radio play by RTÉ. Other work includes performing tabletop Bunraku puppetry with Flabbergast Theatre on various shows, including Boris and Sergey’s Vaudevillian Adventure. Wilcox also worked as Assistant Director to Jon Stancato on The Ecstasy and the Ecstasy, the final project of the graduating students of RADA’s MA Theatre Lab 2015.

Austin originally graduated with a Drama degree from Liverpool, then went on to graduate from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts MA Theatre Lab under Andrew Visnevski, later working with him on a highly physical performance of Macbeth. His training has given him an appreciation for what the human body is fully capable of achieving on stage, both physically and emotionally. A co-founder of physical theatre company Plastic Factory, he has worked in community theatre with the London-based company, Spare Tyre. Austin has performed with numerous directors and practitioners in theatrical styles and traditions from around the world. Recent work includes an open performance at the Royal Ballet School exploring physical performance and Shakespearean text. With Theatre Re, he has performed worldwide in The Nature of Forgetting, which he was involved in co-devising. Austin draws inspiration from contemporary and traditional forms of theatre, particularly comedy, with its power to highlight both the joyous and tragic truths of life.

Established in 2009, Theatre Re is a London-based international ensemble creating thought-provoking and moving work. Its shows examine fragile human conditions in a compelling, physical style embracing mime, theatre and live music. They are often described as magical, poetic and tender as well as disturbing and haunting. The name of the company comes from the prefix ‘re’. It is the ‘re’ of re-discovering and re-imagining, breathing new life into what already exists. Intimate collaborations with experts in different fields such as science and public health and various community groups throughout the devising process play a crucial part in the development of Theatre Re’s works. Our productions have toured widely in the UK, France, Ireland, Switzerland, Germany and the USA. Theatre Re is an Associate Company at The Point Eastleigh and South Hill Park Arts Centre.
