衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年邁向第4 7屆。今屆藝 術節陣容鼎盛,共有超過1700名來自香港和世 界各地的藝術家傾力演出,為觀眾帶來近1 7 0 場精彩表演。 今年藝術節的節目多姿多彩,當代及古典音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇等不同形式的藝術表演共冶一 爐。每個節目從幕後製作到台前演出,均盡顯 精湛的藝術造詣和超凡的想像力。 我很高興知道最近完成活化的中區警署建築 群,即現在的大館古蹟及藝術館,會在兩個周 末呈獻約5 0場舞蹈表演,供公眾免費入場觀 賞。大家更有機會一起參與在大館的檢閱廣 場、監獄操場,甚至是監獄囚室進行的表演節 目。牛棚藝術村亦會打造為藝術共生創造社, 首度成為藝術節發展作品的平台,場內設有不 同創意領域的工作坊,觀眾並可以欣賞一些創 作中的作品,感受藝術家的多元創意。 除了精彩表演,藝術節亦一如以往,悉心籌備 各項教育和外展活動,致力培育本地藝術人 才。「香港藝術節青少年之友」計劃讓本地學 生有機會觀賞世界級的表演和參與各式各樣的 藝術活動。此外,藝術節亦透過後台參觀和大 師班等「加料節目」,讓觀眾與國際頂尖藝術 家互動接觸,了解節目的幕後製作過程。 衷心感謝香港藝術節團隊一直致力推動本港的 藝術發展,成績斐然。我亦感謝贊助商和捐款 者的大力支持,令每年的藝術節圓滿成功,大 獲好評。 謹祝二零一九年香港藝術節所有觀眾、參加者 和表演者可以盡情享受這次藝術之旅,留下愉 快難忘的回憶。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. I am grateful, too, to the many sponsors and donors who, each year, help make the Festival a resounding success. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

故事大綱

Synopsis 年輕的丹麥王子哈姆雷特學成歸來,得知了 令他震驚的消息:他的父親哈姆雷特國王最 近去世,而母親葛楚則已再婚,嫁給繼任的 新國王:父親的弟弟克勞蒂斯。同時,國內 的動盪也讓鄰國的外敵福丁布朗蠢蠢欲動, 意圖入侵。 一晚,哈姆雷特父親的鬼魂出現在他面前; 鬼魂指控克勞蒂斯謀殺了他,並敦促哈姆雷 特為他復仇。這一幕也是之後一系列復仇事 件的開端。 哈姆雷特得知了驚天秘密後,開始懷疑自 己,漸漸疏遠舊友羅森格蘭茲和吉爾登斯 坦,甚至是初戀情人奧菲利亞。他假扮瘋 癲,試圖找到克勞蒂斯謀殺父親的證據。僅 憑忠實的夥伴郝睿修的幫助,他說服了一組 巡演的戲班,在克勞蒂斯和葛楚面前重演父 親的被殺一事,希望讓克勞蒂斯因悔恨而承 認自己的罪行。 一次,哈姆雷特在與母親激烈爭執時,聽到 異響,發現有人在監聽。他斷定監聽者是克 勞蒂斯,便用刀將之刺死,卻發現殺死的居 然是普洛涅斯,即奧菲利亞和雷亞提斯的父 親。 克勞蒂斯擔心哈姆雷特會威脅到自己,下令 將他逮捕並流放到英格蘭,企圖於當地殺人 滅口。但哈姆雷特成功逃過一劫,回到故 土。 奧菲利亞被哈姆雷特拒絕後,又聽聞父親的 死訊,失去理智,最終溺斃。她的哥哥雷亞 提斯在盛怒之下來到宮廷,想要找出殺害父 親的兇手。克勞蒂斯誘使他相信哈姆雷特正 是兇手,並承諾幫助他為父報仇。

Young Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, returns home from his studies to discover the earth-shattering news that his father, the late King Hamlet, recently passed away, and his mother, Gertrude, has re-married the late King’s brother, Claudius, who has now assumed the throne. The resultant instability has also led to threats of invasion by a solider from a neighbouring state, Fortinbras. Late one night, the ghost of Hamlet's father appears to him, accusing Claudius of his murder and urging Hamlet to avenge his death. This sets in motion a train of events that destroys both family and state. No longer able to trust his own senses, the loyalty of his old friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, or even the affections of his young love, Ophelia, Hamlet feigns madness in an attempt to gather proof that the ghost is telling the truth. Aided only by his most loyal companion, Horatio, he persuades a travelling band of actors to re-enact the story of his father's murder in front of Claudius and Gertrude, hoping that Claudius will be so stirred by remorse that he will confess his crime. During an intense encounter with his mother, Hamlet hears a noise and realises that they are being spied upon. In a rage, he stabs the hidden eavesdropper, believing it to be Claudius. Instead he discovers it is the King's advisor, Polonius, father to both Ophelia and her brother Laertes. Polonius dies. Afraid of what Hamlet might do next, Claudius has him arrested and dispatched to England under guard, where he has arranged to have Hamlet murdered. Hamlet escapes and returns to his homeland. Ophelia, having been violently rejected by Hamlet, hears that her father has been murdered. She loses her mind and eventually drowns herself. Her brother, Laertes, returns to court at the head of an angry mob, determined to find out the truth. Claudius convinces

him that Hamlet is the only guilty party and agrees to help Laertes gain revenge. On learning of Hamlet's escape and return to his homeland, Claudius convinces Laertes to challenge Hamlet to a fencing match and advises Laertes on how to kill Hamlet during the duel without arousing suspicion. As a back-up plan, Claudius also poisons a glass of wine, which he intends to offer to Hamlet. Gertrude, however, drinks from the glass first and dies. During the duel, Hamlet is slightly wounded by Laertes, who has tipped his sword with a deadly poison. In the ensuing tussle, the swords get switched and Hamlet also wounds Laertes with the poisoned one. Realising that he is about to die, and that Claudius has manipulated the situation, Laertes confesses everything, forgives Hamlet and dies. As the poison takes hold and he realises that he too is about to die, Hamlet finally carries through his dead father's wish for revenge. He forces Claudius to drink the remaining poisoned wine, which quickly takes effect. With his dying breath, Hamlet asks Horatio to ensure that his story is told accurately. Young Fortinbras arrives at the head of his army, ready to assume control of a state whose royal family has been destroyed by betrayal, murder and revenge. Hamlet, one of Shakespeare’s most commonly known tragedies, was most likely composed in 1601. At this time, Shakespeare was also writing Twelfth Night. The immediate source of Hamlet is an earlier play dramatising the same story of Hamlet, the Danish prince on a path to avenge his father. No printed text of this play survives, but references from the late 16th century testify to its popularity and to the presence of a ghost crying out for revenge. There is general scholarly agreement that the author of this early version of Hamlet was Thomas Kyd, known for his authorship of the revenge drama The Spanish Tragedy. This play was a huge theatrical hit in the late 16th century, satiating the contemporary thirst for intrigue, bloodshed and ghostly presences. The plot of Hamlet, however, is based on an even earlier source dated to the 12th century: an ancient saga of Scandinavia recorded in manuscript form by the Danish scholar, Saxo Grammaticus, in his Historia Danica, and finally printed in 1514. It is the story of the murder of a Danish ruler by his brother (Fengo), swiftly followed by the marriage of the widowed queen (Gerutha) to the murderous brother, the assumed madness of the dead king's son (Amleth) and his voyage to England, during which he alters the letters bearing his death warrant, and from which he returns to avenge himself upon his father's killer. This version of Hamlet is a new translation by Li Jianming specifically dedicated to Li Liuyi’s reinterpretation of the play; it is not bound by literary interpretations, nor is it obsessed with presenting the traditional notion of “beauty” in Shakespeare’s poetry. We search for a rhythm of contemporary theatre language to express the highly refined language of Shakespeare’s plays; we search for a translation with which the actors can convey their lines with resonant meaning, power and movement and express the depth and dramatic tension behind their characters. Through constant digging, analysis and re-creation during rehearsals, this translation is the polished result of the collective efforts by translator Li Jianming, director Li Liuyi and the actors.

Since the commencement of the “Shakespeare Folio Translation Project” in 2016, the Royal Shakespeare Company has collaborated with Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center on presenting a new translation of Henry V (2015). Other collaborations include: King Lear directed by Li Liuyi and starring Pu Cunxin (2017, National Centre for Performing Arts); The Tempest starring Pu Cunxin (2018, National Centre for Performing Arts); and the comedy Twelfth Night (2018, Guangzhou Dramatic Arts Center). We hope our exploration in translation of Shakespeare’s plays will create a theatrical realisation that facilitates actors’ interpretations and the audience’s appreciation, and draws people from China closer to the seminal playwright. 「西方的沒落」已近百年。「西方民主與文 明危機」在於西方事實上已經不能確信自己 的目標(李奧.施特勞斯)。當今世界的主 流戲劇在面對經典藝術時,透過對「經典」 的「解構」、「重組」及「顛覆」,藝術家 於台上表現極端自我的主體性。主觀自我的 這些重新「構作」顛覆,成為了「不能確信 自己的目標」的靈魂絕望,這種絕望成為了 一種普遍的形式。這是人類的困境、藝術的 困 境, 我 們 生 活 其 中, 不 能 輕 視, 無 法 擺 脫……正是這一困境激勵我們回到古典。回 到古典、蘇格拉底、柏拉圖、古代希臘文明 質樸的文化精神。興許這能為我們當代開啟 靈魂的覺悟,收拾絕望的靈魂!否則,靈魂 的淪落、絕望和混亂將繼續…… 莎士比亞回到了古典,創造了一個痛苦的靈 魂引領者。哈姆雷特的悲劇主要在於「靈魂 的失序」。最後,他要郝睿修好好地活下去, 向後人講述他的故事:一個靈魂痛苦的思想 家……構建了西方精神文化思想史。 我們需要有靈魂嗎? 我們需要有智慧嗎?

“The crisis of the West” has lasted almost a hundred years. The so-called crises of Western democracy and civilization lie in the notion that the West has lost "its faith in reason’s ability to validate its highest aim” (Leo Strauss). Now, when mainstream theatre approaches the classics, the extreme subjectivities of artists have led to staging approaches that “deconstruct”, “reconstruct” or “subvert” these classics. These “subjective selves” who reconstruct classics become the collective desperate soul who has lost "its faith in reason’s ability to validate its highest aims”. This desperation is becoming a general phenomenon. This is a predicament for humankind, for the arts. We can neither ignore nor escape our life within its confines. It is this predicament that inspires us to return to the classics, to Socrates, to Plato, to the spirit of ancient Greece’s civilization. Perhaps, this might reawaken our souls and save us from our desperation. Otherwise, the chaos of the lost and despairing souls will continue… Shakespeare returned to the classics himself to create a suffering spiritual leader. The tragedy of Hamlet lies in its “chaos of the soul”. In the end, he asks Horatio to live on and tell his story: a suffering soul, a suffering thinker…constructing the Western cultural, ideological and philosohpical history. Do we need a soul? Do we need wisdom? Do we need morals? Do we think? Do we suffer? Are we happy? Hamlet is… Tomorrow, Hamlet will still be… Eternal Hamlet…

我們需要有德性嗎? 我們思想嗎? 我們痛苦嗎? 我們幸福嗎? 哈姆雷特在…… 明天哈姆雷特還在…… 永遠的哈姆雷特…… 在還是不在,這是一個問題。

談到近二十年具爭議性的中國話劇先鋒導演, 不少人會浮現李六乙的名字,這多少與他的創 作較專注於藝術的探索與未來性,而非迎合觀 眾的欣賞慣性有關係。這位被譽為最懂戲曲的 話劇導演,創作種類與產量豐富,並且風格多 變,至今已有超過五十個舞台作品。 這代表要概括他的風格並非易事,他有抽象、 拼貼、無法歸類的實驗作品,也有寫實風格的 創作,更擅於營造中國式的空靈美學與意境。 在這些百變風格下,他的創作核心是九十年代 以來發展的「純粹戲劇」概念,簡言之是專注 於人的本質與精神性的探求。此一探求直接導 引出他作品中的幾個重要特徵:追求人的多重 意識的表演方式、創造既純粹且無限的劇場空 間想像、寂緩沉靜的舞台節奏等。這些特性都 與當前高度物質化、科技化傾向的劇場相悖。

2 0 1 7 年,李六乙與英國皇家莎士比亞劇團「莎 劇舞台本翻譯計劃」合作上演《李爾王》,票 房極為成功,並被多篇評論盛讚該劇舞台「所 有元素都能說話」、精準的表演、具哲學深度 的當代詮釋等,李六乙也因該劇獲得 2018 年上 海靜安「壹戲劇大賞」的最佳導演。這一方面 顯示當代話劇觀眾對這種沉靜的戲劇表現接受 度漸增,另一方面或許也意味着,李六乙追求 的純粹精神性,在某種程度上反映當代中國人 的內在渴求。《李爾王》的成功與愉快合作經 驗,帶來了他與皇莎的第二部莎劇《哈姆雷特》 (2018 年 11 月北京首演)。李六乙認為對世界 導演而言,《哈姆雷特》就如同珠穆朗瑪峰般, 是一生必須攻克的高山,而要真正達到頂峰, 甚至要付出「生命的代價」。

When speaking of China’s controversial, avant-garde directors over the past 20 years, Li Liuyi’s name springs to mind for many. This is perhaps because Li has devoted his work to exploring art and its futurity rather than attempting to cater to the conventional tastes of theatre-goers. Reputedly the drama director who best understands Chinese opera, Li is known for the volume, variety and stylistic diversity of his theatrical works, which now number over fifty. Li’s style is difficult to generalise: his productions range from abstract, collage-like or plainly unclassifiable experimental works to realist creations and those with the ethereal aesthetics of Chinese culture, at which he excels. Underpinning these manifold styles is the unifying concept of “Pure Theatre”, an ideal that Li has been developing in his works since the 1990s. Put simply, the concept focusses on exploring the very nature and spirituality of humankind, a pursuit that has given rise to some major features of Li’s works: a quest for modes of representing humanity’s multi-layered consciousness, the creation of a pure yet unbound theatrical spatial imagination, and a rhythm of acting that is quiet, calm and composed. These characteristics run counter to the trends towards materialisation and technological dependency in theatres today. In 2017, Li worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) as part of its Shakespeare Folio Translation Project on a production of King Lear. A box-office hit, the play was praised by critics for its precise acting, philosophical depth, contemporary rendering and a stage design in which “all elements could speak”. For his part in the success, Li earned the Best Director Award at Shanghai’s Jing'an Modern Drama Valley One Drama Awards in 2018. On one

hand, this shows that the audience of modern drama in China is becoming more receptive to Li’s quiet manner of stage presentation; on the other, it signifies that Li’s pursuit of pure spirituality to some extent reflects the inner yearnings of Chinese people today. With the success of King Lear and his happy part in that joint effort, Li soon began work with the RSC on a second Shakespearean classic— Hamlet —which premiered in November 2018 in Beijing. To Li, Hamlet is to stage directors worldwide what Mount Everest is to ambitious mountaineers—the summit to be scaled in one’s lifetime, a goal to be attained even “at the cost of one’s life”. In 1990, an earlier version of Hamlet directed by Lin Zhaohua attained legendary status in China’s theatrical circles. Lin’s directorial concept— “Everyone is Hamlet”—led to a peculiar roleswapping technique, at times making it difficult for the audience to differentiate between Hamlet, Claudius and Polonius onstage. The plights of individual characters were thus made to fit people in general, with the Gravediggers in Hamlet upgraded to sarcastic critics of the times. Such a rendering by Lin did well to represent the milieu of that epoch. Now, despite a strong influence from Lin, Li Liuyi remains naturally independent-minded in “going his own way”. In a rare fashion, Li’s own version of Hamlet features a role-swap between Gertrude and Ophelia, with both female roles played simultaneously by actress

Lu Fang. A frequent collaborator with Li in recent years, Lu is best suited to embody the director’s concept of acting. Such acting means more than a simple trick of one person playing two roles, Li explains. The actress will assume a mirage-like identity in which the presence and absence of the two characters are mixed into coexistence. Through the double roles played by Lu, the director attempts to provide a holistic picture of the mental states of many characters; in particular, Hamlet’s love, madness, and warped reality will be directly reflected in the performances of Gertrude and Ophelia. As the two female roles merge into one, the audience can witness the essence of Hamlet’s emotional journey from normalcy to madness, derangement and, ultimately, utter perversity. Compared with his avant-garde peers skilled at creating new formats through stage design and multimedia technology, Li is more interested in innovating through the players’ acting, although he is ever brave to try on various avant-garde ideas and forms. This lends a plain, hand-crafted feel to his works and suggests a tough prerequisite for quality acting, explaining why all those working under Li’s directorship are first-class actors and actresses in China today. Leading roles in Li’s version of Hamlet are played by Hu Jun, Pu Cunxin, Lu Fang and Jing Hao, among others, all of whom have worked for years with the director. Much like their director, the entire cast of Li Liuyi’s Hamlet are like-minded devotees of art, inspired to scale new heights in theatrical performance. William Shakespeare (1564–1616) lived for 52 years. In that time, he produced approximately 37 plays, 154 sonnets and two narrative poems, which together form the greatest body of work in the English language. Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in Stratfordupon-Avon. In 1582, he married Anne Hathaway, and by 1588, he had moved to London to pursue success as an actor and a playwright. In 1594, he became a charter member of a group of actors known as the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, working in Shoreditch as an actor and author of plays at the Rose and Curtain Theatres; after winning the sponsorship of King James I, the group changed its name to the King’s Men. In 1599, the company moved to the newly built Globe Theatre. By 1596, Shakespeare was recognized as the leading London playwright and, at the age of 35, he invested money in the Globe, where he was also a member of the acting troupe. Shakespeare is believed to have produced much of his work between the late 1580s and 1613, after which he retired from London life to Stratford and died in 1616. The First Folio of Shakespeare’s plays was published in 1623, an important turning point for the publication and study of his works. In the preface of that First Folio, Shakespeare’s friend Ben Jonson wrote that the playwright’s influence was “not of an age, but for all time”. His plays have since been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. In China, his works were first introduced in the 19th century, where his name was translated by the respected intellectual, Liang Qichao.

李六乙是北京人民藝術劇院導演及劇作家,曾 於中國藝術研究院戲曲研究所潛心研究中國戲 曲長達八年,執導多個富有中國地域特色的劇 種。李六乙先後創作六十多部作品,包括話劇、 戲曲、歌劇、芭蕾舞劇等,多次應邀赴世界眾 多頂尖國際藝術節演出,並接受委約創作。他 創建「純粹戲劇」理論,在不斷應用中日臻成 熟。

2 0 0 9 年,李六乙受歐洲文化首都林茲市邀請執 導《微笑之國》,該劇於林茲州立劇院首演; 其後受荷蘭藝術節委約,上演改編劇作「巾幗 英雄三部曲」—《花木蘭》、《梁紅玉》、《穆 桂英》;2 0 1 2 年,為中央芭蕾舞團創作的《牡 丹亭》獲邀至愛丁堡國際藝術節搬演,其後於

Li Liuyi is a director and playwright from the Beijing People’s Art Theatre and the artistic director of his own company, Beijing Li Liuyi Theatre Studio. He was trained in Chinese opera and developed his own theory of ‘‘Pure Theatre’’. Li has received commissions from festivals across the world. Over the course of his career, he has made 60 productions ranging from Chinese classical opera to theatre, western opera and ballet. In 2009, Li was invited by the city of Linz, European Capital of Culture, to direct The Land of Smiles (Linz State Theater). He was later commissioned by the Holland Festival for a stage adaptation of "The Heroine Trilogy" including Mulan, Liang Hongyu and Mu Guiying. In 2012, Li’s Peony Pavilion for the National Ballet of China was invited to Edinburgh International Festival; in 2016, it toured to Sadler’s Wells, London. One Table, Two Chairs, a play written and directed by Li, was invited to the LIFT Festival in London. In the past, Li he also collaborated closely with the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Li Liuyi’s primary theatre credits include: Peking Man, Extraordinary Mahjong, Spring in a Small Town, Antigone,Oedipus the King, Prometheus Bound, Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orchard, Teahouse and King Lear. His opera credits include: The Land of Smiles, Wilderness, Song of the Earth, Sunrise and the ballet Peony Pavilion. His Chinese opera credits include: "The Heroine Trilogy" and The Golden Cangue, among others. Li also designs props and lighting for his own work. Li has created more than 20 works. His book Li Liuyi’s Pure Theatre: Collected Works was published by the People’s Literature Publishing House, translated into many languages and available worldwide.

He received the 7th Golden Bauhinia Award for Best Actor and was nominee for Best Actor at the 38th Golden Horse Awards for his performance in Lan Yu. On TV, he starred as Qiao Feng in the drama Tian Long Ba Bu, Xiang Yu in The Story of Han Dynasty and Zhang Xueliang in The Xi’an Incident. He played a leading role in the films Red Cliff, As the Light Goes Out, Lord of Shanghai and Musicians, among others. He has been performing in plays including The Dumb Waiter, Waiting for Godot, Romulus the Great, Hamlet 1990 (directed by Lin Zhaohua), The Fishman, Birdman, Military Train, Pavel Korchagin and Wilderness. Li Jianming Translator 李健鳴長期從事德語教育和翻譯工作,因愛好涉足戲劇,曾翻譯《布萊希特傳》及布 萊希特的劇作、理論書籍,並參與戲劇實踐多年。近年翻譯的作品有《萊辛戲劇七 種》;當代戲劇《白色的房間》、《毒》、《大門之外》;編劇並導演的作品有《三 個女人》、《愛情的印象》(改編自史鐵生先生的小說《務虛筆記》);創作劇本《屋 頂上的奧菲利亞》;改編小說《圍城》、《趙氏孤兒》和《等待戈多》。 Li Jianming has long been engaged in German education and translation work; she became involved in theatre out of a passion for the medium. She translated Brecht: A Biography and other plays and theoretical books written by Bertolt Brecht, and has participated in drama practice programs for many years. Her recent translated works include Lessings sieben Theaterstücke and the modern plays Weißer Raum, Gif and Draußen vor der Tür. Her playwright and director credits include Three Women and Impressions of Love (adapted from Shi Tiesheng’s novel Notes on Principles). She is the creator behind the play Ophelia on the Roof and adaptor of the novels Fortress Besieged, The Orphan of Zhao and Waiting for Godot.

Since 1982, he has been working with the choreographers Jiri Kylian and William Forsythe on works including Limb's Theorem, Kaguya-hime, Stepping Stones, and many other works. As stage designer for opera, he first worked with director Pierre Audi for Claudio Monteverdi's Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria. Other works include: Writing to Vermeer, produced by Peter Greenaway (Dutch National Opera; Tête d'or (Comédie Française); the ballet The Peony Pavilion; and King Lear, directed by Li Liuyi. Simon has been scenic designer for several of Shakespeare’s plays, including Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth and Richard III. Simon started directing his own projects with Elements of Crime. He co-produced with composer Heiner Goebbels Newton’s Casino and Roman Dogs. Since his debut as drama director with Black Rider (1994) in Dortmund, he has been invited to theaters like the Schaubühne Berlin, Burgtheater Wien and Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus to direct and design.

Chang received the Technical Grand Prize at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and has won the Best Art Direction Award and Best Costume & Make-Up Design Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Golden Horse Film Festival on multiple occasions. In 2014, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design for his work on The Grandmaster. Chang has participated in all of Wong Kar Wai's films as art director. He played a starring role in As Tears Go By, and has worked as film editor on Wong Kar Wai’s films since Ashes of Time. His works as art director include Lan Yu (dir. Stanley Kwan) and In the Mood for Love, Happy Together, Ashes of Time, Chungking Express and As Tears Go By (all Wong Kar-wai). He edited In the Mood for Love, Happy Together and Chungking Express. He served as costume designer on A Chinese Ghost Story II (1990) and The Legend of the Swordsman (1992), directed by Ching Siu-tung; and The Dragon Chronicles: The Maidens of Heavenly Mountain (1994), directed by Andy Chin Wing-keung.

Deng Wen Lighting Designer 鄧文畢業於中央戲劇學院舞台美術系。主要作品包括德國卡塞爾文獻展中國藝術家展 開幕演出;中央芭蕾舞團《牡丹亭》、《小美人魚》;舞台劇《驚鴻一瞥貝克特》、 《刺客》、《2047 對話預言》;歌劇《一江春水》;漂移式多維體驗劇《知音號》等。 鄧文 2012 年獲頒國家藝術院團演出季最佳燈光設計獎,成為中國獲此殊榮最年輕的 設計師;2015 年獲中國十佳青年燈光設計獎。他不僅在舞台燈光設計領域表現出色, 在戲劇美術、數位多媒體等視覺藝術設計方面也有獨特創造。 Deng Wen graduated from the Central Academy of Drama majoring in stage design. His major works include: the opening of the Chinese artists’ exhibition at Kassel Documenta in Germany; the National Ballet of China’s The Peony Pavilion and The Little Mermaid; the theatre plays Beckett: En Bref, The Assassin and 2047 Apologue; the opera The Spring River; and the immersive floating theatre ZhiYinHao. Deng was awarded Best Lighting Design at the National Art Company Performing Season, and became the youngest designer in China to receive this award. Apart from his outstanding work in stage lighting design, he also creates visual designs for theatre and multimedia.

Zhou Juan Composer 周娟是中央音樂學院作曲系副教授、美國密蘇里大學坎薩斯城音樂舞蹈學院音樂藝術 博士。主要作品有管弦樂《天涯》、管樂隊《幕啟》、歌劇《悟空》、音樂劇《命運 之選擇》、合唱《愛的康塔塔》、民族管弦樂《半緣君》、大型室內樂《敦煌》、民 樂重奏《覺路 ‧ 花落人間》、話劇配樂《伊底帕斯王》、京劇配樂《金鎖記》及《浣 花吟》等。周娟的作品曾兩次獲中國音樂金鐘獎、美國作曲家、作家和出版社聯合會 古爾德青年作曲家獎首獎、第十七和十八屆文華獎、愛德格.斯諾獎等。她接受委約 和合作的團體包括:萊比錫巴赫音樂節、坎薩斯城合唱團(格林美獎得獎者)、荷蘭 新樂團及德國古音樂節等。 Zhou Juan is an Associate Professor in the Composition Department of the Central Conservatory of Music. She is also a Music Professor at the University of Missouri – Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music and Dance. Her major works include the orchestral work End of Heaven, the wind orchestra piece Before “Curtain!”, the opera Wu Kong I, the musical The Choice of Destiny, the duet Love’s Cantata, the folk orchestral work Half for Your Sake, the large chamber work Dun Huang, the folk ensemble piece Illuminating Road – Ethereal Flower Among Human Life, and scores for the drama Oedipus the King and the Peking operas The Golden Cangue and The Song of Huan Hua. Zhou’s work has twice been awarded the Chinese Golden Bell Award for Music; other accolades include the American Society of Composers Award, the Authors and Publishers’ Morton Gould Young Composer Award, the 17th and 18th Wenhua Awards and the Edgar Snow Award. She has accepted offers to collaborate with companies such as the Bachfest Leipzig, the Grammy Award-winning band Kansas, Nieuw Ensemble and Festival Alte Musik Knechtsteden.

Li Liuyi Theatre Studio 北京李六乙戲劇工作室是專門為實現「純粹戲 劇」而成立的職業戲劇工作室,由李六乙導演 擔任藝術總監,工作室旨在︰ 發揚古典美學自由無邊之精神神話; 書寫當代生活心靈真實之生命現象; 堅持獨立意識詩學品質之純粹戲劇; 享受快樂生活平常自在之非常平常。 北京李六乙工作室曾排演《非常麻將》、《一 桌二椅》、《再見》等小劇場作品;《莊周試 妻》、《小城之春》、《李爾王》等大劇場作 品。2 0 1 2 年啟動「李六乙.中國製造」戲劇計 劃,排演三部古希臘悲劇《伊底帕斯王》、《安 蒂岡妮》和《被縛的普羅米修斯》,以及昆曲 《偶人記》、新京劇「巾幗英雄三部曲」的《花 木蘭》、《梁紅玉》和《穆桂英》等戲曲作品。 工作室出品製作的劇碼曾受邀於荷蘭藝術節、 歐羅巴利亞藝術節、香港藝術節、日本利賀戲 劇節等藝術盛事中演出。

Beijing Li Liuyi Theatre Studio is a professional institute dedicated to the actualization of "Pure Theatre". Li Liuyi is the studio’s artistic director. The aims of the studio are to extol the legend of the free, unbounded spirit found in classical aesthetics, to decipher the vital signs of a beating heart in the world of contemporary living, to uphold the autonomy of pure theatre underpinned by poetics, and enjoy the simple, everyday things that turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. The studio rehearsed and performed Extraordinary Mahjong, One Table, Two Chairs, Chuang Tzu Tests His Wife, Spring in a Small Town and King Lear, among others. In 2012, Li initiated a project to make three Ancient Greek tragedies: Oedipus the King, Antigone and Prometheus Bound. The studio’s Chinese opera credits include: The Heroine Trilogy – Mulan, Liang Hongyu and Mu Guiying. The studio has received commissions from Holland Festival, Europalia International Art Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Toga Festival and other festivals worldwide.
