I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

過去近四十年來，德國低男中音湯瑪士．夸斯 托夫在國際舞台定下音樂標準，他的才能觸動 了無數聽眾，但在 2 012 年結束其出色的歌唱生 涯。其後，他在柏林漢斯．艾斯勒音樂學院和 大師班擔任導師、在音樂會及閱讀會擔任獨奏 家和講者，以及開始自己的爵士樂計劃，由此 可見，他與歌唱及音樂的關係一直密不可分。
For almost four decades, German bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff set the standard on international stages and moved the hearts of countless listeners with his artistry, before ending his outstanding career as a singer in 2012. However, he has retained his close ties to singing and music as a teacher at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin and in various master classes, as a recitalist and speaker at concerts and readings, and with his jazz projects.

Quasthoff was a frequent guest of leading orchestras like the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics at all major music venues, working closely with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, James Levine, Bernard Haitink, Mariss Jansons, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Simon Rattle, Helmuth Rilling, Christian Thielemann and Franz Welser-Möst. His opera début as Minister in Fidelio at the Salzburg Easter Festival was highly acclaimed as well as his remarkable début at the Vienna State Opera as Amfortas in Parsifal. They were highly acclaimed in Zurich, Vienna, Essen, Budapest, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Hildesheim, Weimar, Madrid, Úbeda, Graz, Bielefeld and at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Jazz Fest Wien. Highlights of the 2018/19 season include concerts at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Munich, at the Vienna Konzerthaus and Hong Kong Arts Festival, and in Dresden, Seoul and Ulsan, as well as at festivals in Leverkusen, Heidelberg, Bonn, Oberkochen and at the Berlin State Opera.

Having dedicated himself to Lied for many years, he founded Das Lied International Song Competition in 2009, which took place in February 2019. Quasthoff received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the European Culture Prize for Music at the Dresden Frauenkirche, the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London, the Herbert von Karajan Music Prize of the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, and the Gold Medal of London’s Wigmore Hall. In 2009, he was conferred the title of Österreichischer Kammersänger (Austrian Chamber Singer).

Six years after his retirement from performing Lieder and eight years after his last solo recording, the internationally acclaimed bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff released Nice ‘N’ Easy—his first album recorded with a big band. The album fulfills Quasthoff’s long-cherished dream to record the great jazz classics with the North German Radio Big Band alongside his long-standing musical confrères Frank Chastenier (piano), Dieter Ilg (bass) and Wolfgang Haffner (drums). On the album, they are joined by star trumpeter Till Brönner and musical director Jörg Achim Keller, who arranged the album’s songs Body and Soul, Cry Me a River, Stardust and Imagine for big band and Quasthoff’s unique voice. Since withdrawing from classical concert halls and opera theatres in 2012, Quasthoff has devoted himself to his busy teaching schedule and especially to jazz singing—a love that his brother taught him at an early age. “I’ve always sung jazz,” he says. “It was always part of my musical life.” The songs were chosen purely according to the musicians’ tastes and the urge to provide an ideal setting for Quasthoff’s inimitable voice. “Quite simply, we chose the songs we liked,” Quasthoff explains. “Frank [Chastenier] found a few pieces that suited my voice to a tee and that also left room for interpretation.” Among those pieces are Body and Soul, I’ve Got the World on a String and Too Close for Comfort, sung in an unparalleled, relaxed low register. As Quasthoff puts it, “I think some of the pieces will make listeners take notice and say, ‘We’ve never heard it in that register before!’ It sounds natural and extremely laid-back in this low register.” The interplay of the top-class trio with the renowned North German Radio Big Band is kept marvelously tight under Keller’s musical leadership. It was quite a different story back in the Roaring Twenties, when jazz became the byword in cosmopolitan Paris and American societies. Few classical composers were left untouched by the influence of the "jungle sound" and the sense of great vitality and audacious liberty underlining this new genre. Milhaud’s La Creation du Monde, Kurt Weill’s Threepenny Opera, Stravinsky’s L’histoire du soldat and Shostakovich’s Tahiti Trot blended classical forms with the sounds of jazz. Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, brimming with exotic sounds, biting syncopations and sensual blue notes, was rooted in the composer’s fascination with American jazz and the inimitable George Gershwin.

That admiration was mutual—Gershwin aspired to be a serious composer of symphonic music. He ventured so far as to ask for lessons from Ravel, only to be told, “Why become a second-rate Ravel when you're already a first-rate Gershwin?” Gershwin’s wildly popular Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, Piano Concerto in F and Porgy and Bess proved that he was capable of holding his ground in the classical realm. The examples do not stop there: around the 1960s, there was a surge in popularity of the "Renaissance man" of music, who traverses easily across the borders of classical, jazz and pop—including, most notably, the pianist-composers Leonard Bernstein and Dave Brubeck. In recent years, another name could be added to this list of musical polyglots proficient in the idioms of both classical and jazz: the world-renowned baritone Thomas Quasthoff. A second life in jazz German bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff, hailed by Graham Sheffield, former Chairman of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London, as “one of the most intelligent and captivating voices in classical music”, made the excursion to jazz after retiring from a four-decade career on the classical concert stage. Quasthoff’s love of jazz began at a young age. His older brother, Michael, introduced him to the genre, and an album by Oscar Peterson became Quasthoff’s key to the world of jazz. He was immediately taken with the freedom and the complexity of improvisation, first becoming fascinated with the legendary saxophonists— Parker, Coltrane and Coleman—and eventually venturing to sing jazz during his days as a law student. While it is not uncommon for classically trained singers to find themselves at odds with jazz vocal styles, Quasthoff had little trouble finding his jazz voice. In an interview with Deutsche Welle in 2012, Quasthoff explained that when singing jazz, he adjusts the phrasing, uses vibrato sparingly

and makes good use of the microphone as a tool. Speaking with the Guardian in 2007, Quasthoff remarked that the microphone “opens up so many colours and textures. You can whisper and it can be heard.” In the eyes of Quasthoff, the tunes by Gershwin, Legrand, Rodgers and Hart, Ellington, Lerner and Loewe, Arlen and Mercer, and even Stevie Wonder, are no different from his beloved lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and others—both genres embrace the “folk” spirit and are harmonically, emotionally and lyrically sophisticated in composition. Quasthoff also points out that there is no lack of virtuosity and technique from jazz singers, citing the astonishing multi-octave range of Sarah Vaughan. Putting the past glories of opera and Lieder behind him, Quasthoff’s new repertoire and recent album Nice ‘N’ Easy cover jazz standards and torch songs such as Stardust and Willow Weep for Me, which showcase his sensuous, laid-back bassbaritone voice. Listen to him in a live rendition of Hallelujah, I Love Her So at Jazzfest Bonn 2016, and the absolutely spot-on rhythm, growling and hints of yodelling prove his solid grasp of jazz vocalism. Hear him scat while singing along with Bobby McFerrin, and one would think Quasthoff was a natural-born jazz singer. Dieter Ilg, born in Offenburg in 1961, studied at the Freiburg Music Academy with Wolfgang Stert and at the Manhattan School of Music, New York. He took practical lessons from renowned bass players such as Eddie Gomez, Ron McClure, Rufus Reid and Ron Carter. From 1989 to 1991, Ilg was Carter’s successor as a regular member of the Randy Brecker Quintet. For many years, he played with the Mangelsdorff/Dauner Quintet and with the French-Vietnamese guitarist Nguyên Lê. From the mid-1990s onwards, he began to arrange folk songs as jazz pieces, finding enthusiastic colleagues in Wolfgang Muthspiel and Steve Argüelles. In 2001, he founded his own label, fullfat. A winner of the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize (1988), Ilg also pulled musical strings in innumerable ensembles, including those of the Norwegian vocalist Rebekka Bakken, the Tunisian singer and oud player Dhafer Youssef and prominent personalities Till Brönner and Thomas Quasthoff. Together with his award-winning trio, Ilg has been invited to well-known festivals and renowned concert halls. Since 1995, he has been a docent for jazz double bass at the Freiburg Music Academy, also giving master classes in Germany and abroad. In 2011 and 2014, he won the ECHO Jazz Award in the “Best Bassist – National” category. Since 2011, Ilg’s recordings have been released by the label ACT: Otello and Parsifal were followed by Mein Beethoven, and in the autumn of 2017, B-A-C-H.

Frank Chastenier began playing the piano at the age of eight, inspired by Oscar Peterson, Count Basie and Keith Jarrett. He also playfully mastered the organ at an early age. At 13, he received First Prize at the Jugend Jazzt Competition and a year later, toured Germany as the youngest member of the State Youth Jazz Orchestra of North RhineWestphalia. He was 17 when he took up classical piano studies with Ulla Graf at the Jazz Institute of the Aachen Music Academy. He also studied jazz with Francis Coppieters at the Cologne Music Academy. Chastenier made his debut with the WDR Big Band with a studio production in 1990. A year later, he accepted the position of pianist with the band in Cologne, where he was able to unfold his stylistic versatility and creativity not only at the piano, but also on keyboards, synthesizers and a Hammond B3 organ. Apart from his full schedule with the WDR Big Band, the pianist and arranger supports various studio productions, including the latest recordings of Hildegard Knef, Manfred Krug, Mark Murphy, and Thomas Quasthoff. He accompanies his long-time friend, Till Brönner, on his albums and tours, and has also participated in Roger Willemsen’s musical and literary correspondence, Kleine Lichter.

The list of musicians with whom Haffner has played and recorded seems endless: Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Pat Metheny, The Brecker Brothers, Ivan Lins, Jan Garbarek, Gregory Porter, Michael Franks, Roy Ayers, Bugge Wesseltoft, The Manhattan Transfer, Nils Petter Molvær, The JB Horns, Esbjörn Svensson, Bob James, Mezzoforte, Lee Ritenour, Till Brönner, Joe Sample, Larry Carlton, Cassandra Wilson, Clark Terry, Johnny Griffin, Nils Landgren, Mike Stern, Chuck Loeb, Hildegard Knef, Konstantin Wecker, Die Fantastischen Vier, Xavier Naidoo, the NDR Big Band and the WDR Big Band—to name but a few. He has also worked with some of the most well-known names on the electronic music scene, including Ricardo Villalobos, Timo Maas and Nightmares on Wax. Haffner can be heard on more than 400 albums; he has performed all around the world at the most important jazz festivals and toured 100 countries, from Japan to the USA, from South Africa to Brazil. As a leader, he has released 16 solo albums; he has also made a name for himself as a producer for bands such as Mezzoforte and the singer Max Mutzke. In 2010 he received the ECHO Jazz Award, followed by the Culture Award of his hometown of Nürnberg in 2014. September 2017 saw the release of his most recent album, Kind of Spain. Together with the Wolfgang Haffner Quartet, he tours the world intensely, year after year.
