衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年邁向第4 7屆。今屆藝 術節陣容鼎盛,共有超過1700名來自香港和世 界各地的藝術家傾力演出,為觀眾帶來近1 7 0 場精彩表演。 今年藝術節的節目多姿多彩,當代及古典音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇等不同形式的藝術表演共冶一 爐。每個節目從幕後製作到台前演出,均盡顯 精湛的藝術造詣和超凡的想像力。 我很高興知道最近完成活化的中區警署建築 群,即現在的大館古蹟及藝術館,會在兩個周 末呈獻約5 0場舞蹈表演,供公眾免費入場觀 賞。大家更有機會一起參與在大館的檢閱廣 場、監獄操場,甚至是監獄囚室進行的表演節 目。牛棚藝術村亦會打造為藝術共生創造社, 首度成為藝術節發展作品的平台,場內設有不 同創意領域的工作坊,觀眾並可以欣賞一些創 作中的作品,感受藝術家的多元創意。 除了精彩表演,藝術節亦一如以往,悉心籌備 各項教育和外展活動,致力培育本地藝術人 才。「香港藝術節青少年之友」計劃讓本地學 生有機會觀賞世界級的表演和參與各式各樣的 藝術活動。此外,藝術節亦透過後台參觀和大 師班等「加料節目」,讓觀眾與國際頂尖藝術 家互動接觸,了解節目的幕後製作過程。 衷心感謝香港藝術節團隊一直致力推動本港的 藝術發展,成績斐然。我亦感謝贊助商和捐款 者的大力支持,令每年的藝術節圓滿成功,大 獲好評。 謹祝二零一九年香港藝術節所有觀眾、參加者 和表演者可以盡情享受這次藝術之旅,留下愉 快難忘的回憶。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Born in Australia, Percy Grainger spent the first 13 years of his life in Melbourne, where his mother schooled him at home. He also was tutored in the piano, languages, art, drama and elocution by Prussian-born pianist Louis Pabst. After his debut as a pianist in 1894, money was raised for him to study in Frankfurt, where he would meet and make friends with composers Cyril Scott, Henry Balfour Gardiner and Roger Quilter. In 1901, Grainger established himself as a concert pianist and private teacher in London, where he was the first to use a phonograph in collecting English folk songs. His arrangements of such music were highly successful and influenced many, including Benjamin Britten. His compositions, with a few exceptions, are short pieces of various kinds, the most popular at the time being Molly on the Shore (1907), Shepherd’s Hey (1911), and Handel in the Strand (1911). He left for the United States on the outbreak of the First World War, where he served in the army as a band musician and instructor, playing the oboe and the soprano saxophone. It was in America where he produced his most popular piece, Country Gardens (1918). He developed interesting ideas about what he called “free music”, which would exist without bar lines and other constraints; he also believed that eventually even the performer should be done away with. To this end, he built machines which would be able to play such music and turned to the theremin as perhaps being able to fulfil his ideas. Ramble on the Last Love Duet in Der Rosenkavalier is one of his “free settings of favourite melodies”, and it does ramble around on themes from Der Rosenkavalier in a highly pianistic manner, in the way of an improvisation. It’s a splendid realisation of the feeling of Strauss’ lushly romantic music.

舒伯特 C 小調第十九鋼琴奏鳴曲,D958

Franz Schubert Piano Sonata No 19 in C minor, D958 舒伯特臨終那年,儘管身體抱恙又經常頭痛, 但仍創作了大量傑作,按完稿順序計有:F 小調 鋼琴二重奏幻想曲、《三首鋼琴小品》,包含 洋溢激情的快板和優美的迴旋曲的 A 大調鋼琴 二重奏、降 E 大調彌撒曲、詩篇第九十二篇之 譜曲,還有合稱為《天鵝之歌》的動人聯篇歌 曲、無與倫比的 C 大調弦樂五重奏,以及他的 遺作《岩石上的牧羊人》(為女高音、單簧管 和鋼琴而寫)。這時,同期作曲家貝多芬才剛 逝世不久;舒伯特與貝多芬一樣,臨終前一首 接一首地譜寫了最後三首鋼琴奏鳴曲;每首的 格調都截然不同。這三首奏鳴曲分別以 C 小調、 A 大調和降 B 大調寫成,並都在 1828 年 9 月完 成。C 小調奏鳴曲既激烈又像在上下求索似的; A 大調奏鳴曲整體上很抒情;降 B 大調奏鳴曲則 嚴肅深沉。

C 小調奏鳴曲的開端馬上令人想起貝多芬為同一 音調而寫的三十二首變奏曲的主題。強勁有力 的開端過後,是幾個躁動的小節,再引入以關 係大調寫成的第二主題—這個主題氣息綿長, 彷彿原本是弦樂四重奏似的。但這個主題重複 時,卻以躁動的三連音伴奏;再度重複時則是 個變奏,主題改為小調,以十六分音符勾劃出 輪廓;音樂漸漸推進,直至熱情爆發的一刻, 然後發人深省的小尾聲以降 E 大調作結,卻又突 然轉回 C 小調準備重複,或走進降 A 大調準備 發展部的來臨。到了發展部,經過一些刺激的 樂段過後,起伏有致的新主題出現,穿越多個 調性之後安頓在 G 大調—預告了激烈的第一主 題即將重現。再現部也大同小異,但第二主題 以 C 大調寫成。尾聲以發展部裏的主題為基礎, 最後寧靜地在小調作結。

During his last year, despite illness and frequent headaches, Franz Schubert produced an extraordinary number of masterpieces, including, in order: the Fantasy in F minor for piano duet, the Drei Klavierstücke, the turbulent Allegro and the beautiful Rondo in A major for piano duet, the Mass in E flat and a setting of Psalm 92, as well as the wonderful set of songs titled Schwannengesang, the incomparable String Quintet in C, and his final work, Der Hirt auf dem Felsen for soprano, clarinet and piano. Like his late contemporary Beethoven, Schubert also wrote three final sonatas, one after the other, each with a distinctly different character. These last three piano sonatas—in C minor, A major, and B-flat major—came in September. The C minor is stormy and questing, the A major generally lyrical and the B-flat major, contemplative. This C minor sonata begins with a passage which immediately recalls the original theme of Beethoven’s 32 Variations in the same key. It’s a powerful start, giving way to a restless few bars leading to the relative major for the second subject—a long-breathed melody, as if taken from a string quartet. The repetition of this theme, however, is accompanied by restless triplets, and the second repeat is a variation, in which the theme in the minor is outlined by semiquavers. This rises to a passionate outburst, after which a ruminative coda closes in E-flat major, but abruptly shifts back to C minor for the repeat, or into A-flat for the beginning of the development. In this, after some drama, a new, sinuous theme appears, moving through various keys until it reaches G major—a signal for the stormy return of the first subject. The recapitulation follows the same course, but with the second subject in C major. The theme from the development informs the coda, and the

movement ends quietly, in the minor. The second movement is in the form A–B–A–B– A. After a theme in A-flat major, the B sections begin with a theme in the minor followed by restlessness again, with agitated triplets and pungent accents. The triplets from this continue into the accompaniment of the A theme, and this time the cadential passages reach out to far-flung keys, ending in A major! The next B section is more dramatic than the first one, and when the first subject returns, it is accompanied by a semiquaver pizzicato bass. After reaching A major again, the music breaks off before A flat major is firmly reestablished, forte. The Menuetto is mainly subdued, except for an outbreak of accents and a fortissimo in the second part, while the Trio is plaintive in effect. A sense of unease pervades a great deal of the final movement, in 6/8—almost like a tarantella. This shows itself in the main theme itself, and in its constantly shifting harmonies. The second subject, beginning in C-sharp minor, is somewhat like a march with a wide-stepping theme over (and under) a jogging accompaniment. A third subject follows, in B major, and this is developed extensively before a dramatic move towards G major. The first and second subjects return and then the first subject comes back to end the movement, dying away, only to be followed by the final two fortissimo chords.

The pianist and composer Marc-Andre Hamelin was born in Montreal, and was quite early in his life introduced to composers such as Charles-Valentin Alkan, Leopold Godowski and K.S. Sorabji by his father, who clearly had an interesting taste in and unusual knowledge of music. This early inspiration made a great impression, and Hamelin went on to study at the École de musique Vincent-d’Indy in Montreal and subsequently at Temple University in Philadelphia. Hamelin is a virtuoso performer whose astounding technique allows him to make extraordinary effects in his playing and to master challenging works with apparent ease. As a judge at the 2017 Van Cliburn competition (at which Yekwon Sunwoo was the gold medallist), Hamelin was commissioned to produce the compulsory contemporary work to be played by each contestant, and this Toccata was the result. The tune L’homme armé first appeared in Europe around the middle of the 15th century, and it has been used as a cantus firmus in an astonishing number of settings of the Ordinary of the Mass. A cantus firmus is an existing melody that is used as the basis for a new composition, typically for a Mass or other composition for the church. There are more than 40 Masses titled Missa L’homme armé from 1450 to the end of the 17th century. The original purpose of the song is not known—perhaps it was a call to arms—but the melody is well-adapted for use as a cantus firmus with its clear form and direct melodic moves. The original melody may sometimes be altered in rhythm and also pitch, but it seems that Hamelin sticks to the original in his work, surrounding the tune with greatly entertaining and also demanding pianistic filigree.

During the 1912–1913 concert season, Sergei Rachmaninov had such a hectic schedule that he cancelled his final appearance and left for Switzerland and then Rome, where he began work on his setting of Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, The Bells. Two of his daughters contracted typhoid, however, necessitating a hurried move to Berlin, where they recovered enough for the family to return to Ivanovka, the country estate owned by his wife and brother-in-law, but effectively run by Rachmaninov. There in January 1913, he began work on the second piano sonata as well as completing the orchestration of The Bells; the piano sonata was completed in September, and the choral symphony was first performed in December of that year, with the composer conducting. In 1931, Rachmaninov revised the work, cutting some 120 bars and removing some of the technical challenges. This version is one of the most concise and closely argued of his larger works, while giving the impression of some grand improvisation in its emotional power and pianistic prowess. A stunning cascade begins the work, and subsequent motifs and melodies often rely on some kind of downward movement: sometimes chromatic, and often in falling thirds. These ideas permeate the whole work, which is even more tightly woven as a result of a bridge passage, which introduces the second movement and connects the second to the last. The first movement’s brilliant opening is followed by a chordal and quietly reflective second subject, providing calm amid the passion. After the broad recapitulation, the movement ends thoughtfully. The slow movement, in which the falling thirds are a prominent feature, is a magnificent example of Rachmaninov’s art in its outpouring of impassioned emotion, containing two great climaxes. The final Allegro molto begins like some sort of a march, energetic and rhythmic, and again there is a contemplative second theme, rising to a fine climax. After a recapitulation in the major key, Rachmaninov provides a grand, sweeping finish, with a last magnificent cascade at the very end.

Written in 1919–1920 on commission from Sergei Diaghilev, the director of the Ballets Russes, La Valse is what Maurice Ravel called a poème chorégraphique. Ravel had always been fascinated by the possibilities of dance, which he found to be significant from a structural point of view and an important source of rhythmic invention. During his lifetime he composed numerous dances, having contemplated composing a waltz as early as 1906, with the title Vienne. In 1911, he produced his Valses nobles et sentimentales for solo piano, but this was clearly not the grand waltz piece he had in mind. Diaghilev’s commission gave him just the spur required to unloose the work he had contemplated for so long. The original commission was for orchestra, but when Diaghilev heard the work in a two-piano reduction, he described it as a masterpiece, but as a “portrait of a ballet” rather than music for a ballet. Diaghilev thus declined to stage it, causing an unbridgeable rift between the two men. The work, however, was subsequently successfully produced as a ballet, and Ravel later arranged the work for piano solo. The composer’s preface to the original score describes the work as follows: “Through whirling clouds, waltzing couples may be faintly distinguished. The clouds gradually scatter: one sees an immense hall peopled with a whirling crowd. The scene is gradually illuminated. The light of the chandeliers bursts forth.” With the full range of colour available from the orchestra, Ravel creates a magnificent effect in carrying out this scheme, and it would seem that a single pianist would be hard put to emulate this. Ravel was a consummate master of his technique, however, and would not have made such an arrangement had he not thought it to be eminently viable, although extremely challenging. Gold medallist of the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, 30-year old pianist Yekwon Sunwoo has been hailed for his “unfailingly consistent excellence”(International Piano) and celebrated as “a pianist who commands a comprehensive technical arsenal that allows him to thunder without breaking a sweat”(Chicago Tribune). The first Korean to win Cliburn gold, Sunwoo's 2018/19 season features concerto performances with the Munich Philharmonic (Valery Gergiev), Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester (Sebastian Weigle) and Orchestra i Pomeriggi Musicali (Daniele Callegari); a European tour with the KBS Symphony; an extensive tour of Japan; and chamber music performances with the New York Philharmonic String Quartet. He has toured Central America with the Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation and performed for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In addition to the Cliburn gold medal, Sunwoo won first prizes at the 2015 International German Piano Award in Frankfurt, the 2014 Vendome Prize at the Verbier Festival, the 2013 Sendai International Music Competition, and the 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition. Born in Anyang, South Korea, Sunwoo began learning piano at age eight. He gave both his recital and orchestral debuts in Seoul in 2004 before earning his bachelor’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music, master’s degree at The Juilliard School, and artist diploma at the Mannes School of Music studying with Seymour Lipkin, Robert McDonald, and Richard Goode, respectively. He currently studies with Bernd Goetzke at Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover. Sunwoo credits each teacher for their guidance in his artistic development and approach.

Korea is probably one of the few countries in the world where classical musicians can become household names. Here, the name Sunwoo Yekwon elicits the response, “Ah, that young pianist,” even from those unfamiliar with classical music. The [30-year-old] pianist is a star not only onstage but on television as well, starring in a popular series featuring the lives of several Korean celebrities who stay abroad. Sunwoo, however, is no overnight sensation. Before clinching the gold medal at [2017’s] Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, he had competed in numerous competitions. The Van Cliburn was his eighth win and his last; Sunwoo, who previously explained that he entered competitions out of financial necessity, declared that he would not participate in any more piano competitions. The Van Cliburn prize carries a cash award of $50,000, among other benefits. Sitting across Sunwoo at a coffee shop in the basement of the Seoul Arts Center in early January 2018, I asked if he is as goofy as the JTBC show makes him out to be. “There is that aspect to me, but I could also be particular,” says the pianist. Surely, artists should be allowed to be particular, sensitive; after all, we shouldn’t expect them to create extraordinary art while being ordinary. But Sunwoo is no diva. “I know the efforts of the staff that go into creating an optimal condition. So, while I am sensitive about my own performance, I am more relaxed about the situation surrounding the performance,” Sunwoo says. Sunwoo began learning the piano at eight years old, tagging along with his sisters to a neighborhood piano hagwon, or private piano school, where a teacher spotted his talent and encouraged him to pursue music.

He attended the Yewon School, an arts middle school, and left Korea to attend the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia to study with Seymour Lipkin, with whom he would continue to study for six years and from whom he learned to think about composers’ intentions. Since then, he has earned his master’s at The Julliard School and an artist diploma at the Mannes School of Music. Currently, he studies in Hannover, Germany. Timid and shy as a youngster, Sunwoo was anxious about the language problem but otherwise embraced the opportunity to study in a different country, just as he enjoys his nomadic life today, performing in concert halls around the world. 2017 was a particularly hectic year for Sunwoo, who found himself inundated with new concerts and recitals following his Van Cliburn win in June. He kept his existing commitments while taking on additional engagements as people clamored for a chance to hear the new, young sensation. For the 2018 season, Sunwoo is preparing a new program that will include Schubert. “I like Schubert’s music. They may sound simple and monotonous, but for a musician, music of the ‘king of lieder’ feels as if they flow naturally, like water,” he says. Although the composer, who died young at age 31, had a tragic life, he also felt happiness, Sunwoo points out. “His music shows pain and happiness. There is a lingering emotion. Even a melody that sounds optimistic leaves you [with] a serene sadness,” he says. “I guess I liked Schubert from the beginning. I heard a piece at the piano hagwon that I really liked, but it was only years later that I discovered that it was a Schubert Impromptu. I didn’t have the courage to ask what it was when I first heard it.” The advantage of living in Europe, in Germany in particular, is that he can experience the kind of life that composers led—he favors late Classical-Romantic composers. He also appreciates that Europe is conducive to taking long, quiet walks. “I enjoy solitude,” says Sunwoo. “It is essential for recharging.” Beethoven was also known to have taken long, solitary afternoon walks through the forests of Vienna. Are there any disadvantages for performers who come from countries that do not share the Western classical tradition? “One cannot avoid such prejudices,” he says, adding that those views are changing now.

“A lot of young people travel overseas and have experience with foreign cultures. I think there isn’t a great [cultural] gap these days,” he says. “Human emotions cross borders, and music is about expressing and sharing emotions. There is no cultural barrier in that.” Despite his relatively young age, Sunwoo is a disciplined musician. He feels an urge at times to interpret in his own way pieces he frequently performs. “At such times, I review the score and try not to go outside of it. One should be free within the frame of the composer’s thoughts,” he says. “I could perform with total abandon, but it is the role of the performer to play within the [intentions] of the composer,” he adds. “A performance flows better when I pore over the score.” The classical musician also listens to popular music. “Lee Moon-sae, Park Hyo-shin, Chang Hye-jin, Lee So-ra,” he says without hesitation, naming iconic Korean pop balladeers. “Strangely, I don’t hear the lyrics most times, just the melodies.” What would he play for a special someone? With this question, he takes his time, leaning back against the chair and looking upward at the ceiling as he thinks. “I think I will do whatever she wants,” he says with a laugh. Pressed for more, he adds, “If I could choose…it is a piece I play frequently: ‘October’ from Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons.” Sunwoo concludes the interview with a promise to his fans that is as much a promise to himself: “There will be times when I will be tired, emotionally drained. Musically, I will try not to fall into habit and not lose my love and passion for music,” he says. “I will try to continue to have this feeling I have today. Before taking his extraordinary career beyond the competition stage, Yekwon Sunwoo cemented his rise to international acclaim by taking the gold at the prestigious 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. The Competition was originally inspired by Harvey Lavan “Van” Cliburn Jr, winner of the first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow at the height of the Cold War in 1958, and his legacy of demonstrating how classical music, in the hands of a master, can reach beyond borders. Today, the quadrennial Competition supports and launches the careers of young artists aged 18–30 through its competitions, education programmes, concert series, and comprehensive career management for its winners. Through its live concert and competition webcasts and its efforts to arrange for competitors to stay with host families throughout the duration of the competition, the Van Cliburn perpetuate its mission of reaching beyond borders, bridging cultures to share the joys of classical music.
