MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE
I congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) on celebrating its Golden Anniversary this year.
Striving to enhance the cultural vibrancy of Hong Kong, the HKAF is an annual highlight for arts enthusiasts from home and abroad. Due to the closure of cultural and arts venues during the fifth wave of the pandemic earlier this year, certain in-venue programmes had to be cancelled. This notwithstanding, the HKAF was quick in moving some programmes online while presenting some others (including those open for the public free of charge) as originally planned. Six of these programmes were rescheduled in the latter half of 2022 as a “line-up” to continue the HKAF under the theme “Connected”. It demonstrates the flexibility and creativity of the Hong Kong arts sector in infusing culture in the daily lives of people. This year’s HKAF features a wide array of in-venue programmes, including A Tribute to Cantonese Opera Legend Sun Ma Sze Tsang and the stunning dance performance Colossus, which will be presented from July to November. In addition, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and artists from City Contemporary Dance Company will jointly present an evening event featuring a spectacular music and dance performance entitled Reflections of Refractions, to mark the

HKAF’s Golden Jubilee and the 60th Anniversary of City Hall. Every year, more than 1700 local and international artists take part in the HKAF. With its wide array of traditional performances and innovative contemporary works, the HKAF plays a crucial role in raising Hong Kong’s international reputation in the arts world while highlighting the rich local culture. At the same time, it underpins the strategy to support Hong Kong’s development into an East-meetsWest centre for international cultural exchange under the National 14th FiveYear Plan. I am encouraged to see that despite the tremendous difficulties during the pandemic, the HKAF remains committed to promoting arts education in schools and other outreach activities. In particular, the PLUS programmes of the Festival bring together artists and members of the public through a range of activities such as behind-the-scenes videos, masterclasses, artist dialogues and preand post-performance talks. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the hard work and dedication of the HKAF team who always strives to ensure the Festival’s ongoing success over the past 50 years. My gratitude also goes to all sponsors and donors for their generous support to the HKAF and the local arts and cultural development. I wish the 50th HKAF a resounding success, bringing to us many more fabulous programmes in the next 50 years. I also look forward to your continued support to the HKAF.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival marks a significant milestone this year. Thank you for joining us in celebrating its 50th edition. Though the pandemic continues to present challenges and has prompted us to be extranimble in our response this year, the Festival’s determination to bring you some of the best in performing arts from across the world remains unabated. The prevailing conditions made travel difficult and the HKAF once again adapted. Though the fifth wave of the pandemic forced venues to close, the Festival still managed to present an excellent world-class lineup online and will present some of the programmes it couldn’t show, on a deferred schedule later this year. The Hong Kong Arts Festival remains “Connected”—to the world and to its audiences—bringing a range of programmes, including theatre, dance, opera and music. We are convinced that great art, in whatever form, is a tonic and we

Circumstances have forced us to adapt this year, and some invenue performances have had to be rescheduled, giving us an extended period in the year which marks our 50th Anniversary, 30 years of Young Friends, and of course the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR. We are honoured that a number of signature Festival programmes have been selected for inclusion in the 25th Anniversary events. In this and in many other ways, the Festival has been a part of the Hong Kong story over the past 50 years. We will continue in this role in the years to come, and we sincerely hope that you will continue to stay connected with us long into the future. We will endeavour to work hard to be deserving of your company.

Introduction to specialised roles in Chinese opera and “One Table, Two Chairs”
Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou: Hangdang 「
Hangdang is a unique system of classifying Chinese opera roles. Opera actors perform their roles according to hangdang. The basic roles in Cantonese opera, as in other genres of contemporary Chinese opera, are classified as sheng, dan, jing and chou.
生 Sheng
The male roles are known collectively as sheng. Xiaosheng and xiaowu are two types of young male roles, where the characters do not typically wear beards. These roles are divided into civil and martial ones. The term wusheng is specifically used by Cantonese opera to refer to laosheng (bearded male roles), which are the middleaged or elderly male roles. Black, grey and white beards are used to indicate the age of the characters.
旦 Dan
12
Dan is a general term for the female roles. Under that collective term we have huadan and guimendan which are roles of regular young women, the latter being mostly unmarried; wudan are roles requiring outstanding martial arts; and laodan are roles exclusively for old women, whose grey or white hair generally indicate their age.

淨 Jing
The jing role, commonly known as hualian or huamian (flowered face), involves male characters with unique attributes, moral values or appearance, and can be loyal, treacherous, civil or martial. Different-coloured pigments are used to paint characteristic patterns on their faces.
丑 Chou
The chou role is commonly known as the “little flowered face”, because the bridge of the character’s nose is usually painted with a small patch of white. This role covers a wide variety of characters, some kind-hearted, humorous and funny, while others are treacherous, stingy and despicable. Sometimes the role involves the need to play female characters.

“One table, two chairs” are the most common and most traditional items used to set the scene on the opera stage. Since ancient opera performances had no fixed venues, props and set design tended to be simple.

Tables and chairs are very versatile. They appear only when required by characters in the performance and are immediately removed once they have served their purpose. In different situations, tables and chairs can have different functions. The most basic practical function is for them to serve as regular tables and chairs. However, increased numbers of tables and chairs, or enclosures made from tables and chairs, decorated with props of different colours and patterns can be used on stage to represent set furnishings such as
bridges, hills, towers, flagpoles, beds, and even used to create scenes such as palaces, military camps and law courts. As necessity is the mother of invention, everything can come from nothing. “One table, two chairs” provides limitless opportunities to use the onstage area to express the infinity of time and space!

Chunyu Tiying lives during the reign of Emperor Wen of the Han dynasty. Her father Chunyu Yi was once an official of the imperial court, but gave up the position to become a doctor. Unfortunately, he is falsely accused of causing the death of a patient and is ordered to the capital to be punished. There are three types of corporal punishment in those times: one where characters are tattooed on the prisoner’s face, which is then stained black with ink; another in which the prisoner’s feet are cut off; and another still where the prisoner’s nose is cut off. Together with her sisters, Tiying rushes to the capital, where she has an appeal prepared on behalf of her father. She then goes to the palace to present the appeal to Emperor Wen. In her appeal, she points out that these forms of corporal punishment are inhumane and do not give the prisoner the opportunity to rehabilitate. Emperor Wen is also a filial person. He reads Tiying’s appeal and admires her filial piety. He also agrees with her views on corporal punishment. As a result, he orders that Chunyu Yi’s case be reopened, and agrees to discuss the abolition of corporal punishment with his ministers.

Although highly regarded in ancient times, the traditional Chinese virtues— loyalty, filial piety, chastity and righteousness—have faded away, weakening ties between people. The 2022 Hong Kong Arts Festival will present a Cantonese opera series with stories stemming from the classic tales of the Classic of Filial Piety as a blueprint. How will writer and producer Annie Chow present the characteristics of Cantonese opera through this work? What relevance do the traditional concepts in the stories have to contemporary society? In this pandemic era, the stories about filial piety might have a surprising resonance for people.

New Cantonese Opera Adaptation Centred on the Classic of Filial Piety

As an enthusiast of Cantonese opera, Chow looked to the general repertoire of classic, but also to many children’s performances. She found the mainstream operas, such as Princess Changping, unsuitable for children to perform. Bearing this in mind, Chow came up with the idea of using tales from the Classic of Filial Piety as subjects when she wrote scripts for a children’s Cantonese opera workshop. “Stories based on the Classic of Filial Piety can strike a chord with both adults and children,” she says. However, Chow found the traditional stories in the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars too monotonous, so she turned to the stories A Dutiful Son Fishing in Ice for His Mother, The Warrior Daughter Yunying Takes Her Father’s Place and A Daughter’s Appeal to Save Her Father adapted from the Thirty-Six Exemplars of Filial Piety. “These stories are by themselves relatively dramatic, and so are more conducive to arranging storylines,” Chow says, “and by adding various scenes and roles, you can ratchet up the dramatic tension.” Initially, this series of works was initiated as a children’s Cantonese opera and developed with the help of the renowned Cantonese opera actor Yuen Siufai (aka. Fai Gor), who advised on the writing and directed the performers in rehearsals and performances. In this 2022 production, the plot and the staging are different from the past productions in 2012. “Considering the size of the
performance space, this time we have referenced the format of studio theatre and adopted the ‘one table, two chairs’ barestage design while reducing the number of walk-ons,” Chow says. “This way, we can make everyone focus on the stories and main performers.” One of the performers, Kim Lun has further revised the script to make the plot more rounded. He and Chow have also tailored the scenes to the performers’ specialities and have stuck with the traditional Cantonese operatic format, to ensure the actors have ample room for expression.

In the famous old operas, routine ways of acting left little room for new performers to flourish. So Chow once again invited Yuen to be artistic consultant, and he was greatly encouraging as he was with each of the previous collaborations. “Fai Gor has been very supportive of us since our production of children’s Cantonese operas,” she says. “He sees the three plays as unfolding Cantonese opera by presenting its various characteristics such as role types as well as civil and martial scenes; and the plays also allow the child performers of our previous shows or the young talents of this new programme to harness what they have learned.” To this end, rather than instructing the performers in their singing and acting styles, Chow asks them to freely interpret the scripts and act out stories. “This way, the performers can develop their own styles, while learning from the guidance given by their predecessor [Fai Gor] during rehearsals.” This method preserves traditional Cantonese opera, but at the same time passes on the tradition to the next generation. Chow also hopes this performance can inspire audiences to reflect on what the traditional virtues in the Classic of Filial Piety mean to contemporary society and to re-examine present-day social relationships. “Chinese opera is educational— the on-stage performances help promote concepts and teachings in stories,” she says. “And also, given the rather
negative social atmosphere and weak interpersonal relationships that prevail today, we hope to bring out positive energy while inspiring people through this programme.” Adapting the stories arising from the Classic of Filial Piety can inspire in the audience new insights into the classics, as well as enhancing their understanding of Cantonese opera. Chow sums up the artistic significance of the performance concisely: “Loyalty, filial piety, chastity and righteousness; singing, acting, reciting and martial arts; and sheng (actors), dan (actresses), jing (male roles with painted face) and chou (male clown roles)”. With wellrounded characters and civil and martial scenes, the three plays will give both audiences and performers a comprehensive Cantonese opera experience.
