適逢香港藝術節踏入金禧 50 周年, 謹此衷心祝賀。 香港藝術節是本地和國際藝壇一年一 度的盛事,致力為香港文化生活增添 姿彩。鑑於 2022 年年初的第五波疫 情,香港藝術節部分現場演出因場地 關閉而須取消。儘管如此,藝術節 迅速作出應變,一方面將部分演出移 師線上舉行,另一方面如期舉辦多 個線上節目,更開放其中多項節目 供市民免費觀賞。此外,今年的藝 術節還安排把六個現場演出節目改於 2022 年下半年舉行,作為第 50 屆藝 術節的「延續」,巧妙地承接大會主題 「繫」, 亦充分反映香港藝術界的人士 能隨時隨地發揮無限創意,將文化糅 合於市民的生活之中。 香港藝術節將安排在 2022 年 7 月至 11 月期間上演連串多姿多彩的現場 節目,包括︰向一代粵劇名伶致敬 的「新馬師曾名劇展」以及動人心 魄的大型舞作《無極》。為慶祝香 港大會堂 60 周年及香港藝術節 50 周 年,香港小交響樂團將與城市當代 舞蹈團攜手呈獻精湛的聯合音樂會 《影幻形光》。 每屆的香港藝術節均吸引逾 1700 名

Striving to enhance the cultural vibrancy of Hong Kong, the HKAF is an annual highlight for arts enthusiasts from home and abroad. Due to the closure of cultural and arts venues during the fifth wave of the pandemic earlier this year, certain in-venue programmes had to be cancelled. This notwithstanding, the HKAF was quick in moving some programmes online while presenting some others (including those open for the public free of charge) as originally planned. Six of these programmes were rescheduled in the latter half of 2022 as a “line-up” to continue the HKAF under the theme “Connected”. It demonstrates the flexibility and creativity of the Hong Kong arts sector in infusing culture in the daily lives of people.

Every year, more than 1,700 local and international artists take part in the HKAF. With its wide array of traditional performances and innovative contemporary works, the HKAF plays a crucial role in raising Hong Kong’s international reputation in the arts world while highlighting the rich local culture. At the same time, it underpins the strategy to support Hong Kong’s development into an East-meetsWest centre for international cultural exchange under the National 14th FiveYear Plan.

I congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) on celebrating its Golden Anniversary this year.
This year’s HKAF features a wide array of in-venue programmes, including A Tribute to Cantonese Opera Legend Sun Ma Sze Tsang and the stunning dance performance Colossus, which will be presented from July to November. The Hong Kong Arts Festival marks a significant milestone this year. Thank you for joining us in celebrating its 50th edition. Though the pandemic continues to present challenges and has prompted us to be extranimble in our response this year, the Festival’s determination to bring you some of the best in performing arts from across the world remains unabated.
The prevailing conditions made travel difficult and the HKAF once again adapted. Though the fifth wave of the pandemic forced venues to close, the Festival still managed to present an excellent world-class lineup online and will present some of the programmes it couldn’t show, on a deferred schedule later this year. The Hong Kong Arts Festival remains “Connected”—to the world and to its audiences—bringing a range of programmes, including theatre, dance, opera and music. We are convinced that great art, in whatever form, is a tonic and we
hope to provide many memorable moments in this landmark year.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who make the Festival possible. These include the HKSAR Government’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department, which provides an annual subvention; the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, a long-time supporter of the HKAF; and corporate sponsors, charitable foundations and individual donors, for their generous support. Sincere thanks also to all the participating artists, who have brought such joy to Hong Kong audiences during these times, the difficulties of the pandemic notwithstanding.

On behalf of the Festival team, I warmly welcome you to this programme at the 50th Hong Kong Arts Festival.
Due to the pandemic, many invenue performances have had to be rescheduled—some were postponed to the second half of 2022, while some will be joining the 2023 line-up.
Before we embrace the long-awaited new season of live performances in 2023, do join us in a small roundup—including this very film you will be watching—as 2022 draws to a close. We’d like to take the time to appreciate the efforts of all of our co-workers (whether on stage or behind the scenes) who made this possible, and to hope for a successful year ahead. Above all, we hope this film and other programmes from the 50th Hong Kong Arts Festival have brought you comfort and joy.
In this and many other ways, the Festival has been a part of the Hong Kong story during the past 50 years, playing a leading role in the development of the arts in Hong Kong. We will continue to try our best, and sincerely hope that you will stay connected with us long into the future and support our efforts to enhance the city’s cultural environment.

HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include Gangsters of Hong Kong, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family – A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

香港藝術節多年來與知名海外藝術家及團體聯合 製作不少優秀作品,當中包括由香港藝術節、香 港歌德學院及翩娜.包殊烏珀塔爾舞蹈劇場聯合 製作的《抹窗人》、由倫敦老域劇院、布魯克林 音樂學院與尼爾街製作公司製作、香港藝術節為 聯合委約機構之一的「橫貫計劃」之《暴風雨》 及《李察三世》、由香港藝術節及上海國際藝術 節聯合委約的《青蛇》、三藩市歌劇院與香港藝 術節聯合製作的《紅樓夢》等。

HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.
HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 30 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached around 800,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.
HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.
HKAF actively promotes inclusiveness and understanding via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

In the past 50 years, the Festival has brought a remarkable range of world-class performances to Hong Kong. Events which have never failed to bring pleasure and delight to us all, and to open up new perspectives for our imaginations to explore.
Throughout the years, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has been a major supporter, donating over HK$500 million to date. This is made possible by the Club’s unique integrated business model, through which racing and wagering generate tax and charity support for the community.
Rising to the challenge of the pandemic, this year’s Festival is no less impressive. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series brings world-class performances through online productions from the Bayerische Staatsoper, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Paris Opera Ballet. Laila in Hong Kong, supported by the Club in celebration of the Festival’s 50th anniversary, provides an online insight into the making of this innovative performance experience.
The Jockey Club has long promoted local talent. This year, even more opportunities are offered via The Jockey Club Local Creative Talents Series and the all-new Jockey Club InnoArts Series. Meanwhile, the fourth edition of HKartsFestival@ TaiKwun presents a number of online productions in different disciplines, connecting artists and the community. Like Them, Like Us is a documentary that follows the making of Love Streams, a dance opera that fuses two operas–Heart of Coral, a biopic of female Republican writer Xiao Hong, and Women Like Us, a combination of two short stories by Hong Kong author Xi Xi–with gripping dance movements. In this tender, cinematic look at the creative and rehearsal processes of the singers as well as dancers from Hong Kong Dance Company, the personal lives of these performers overlap with those of the characters they play, far removed by time and space, in a way they could never have imagined.
Oscillating between video essay and documentary, the film weaves interviews, opera lyrics and behind-thescenes rehearsal footage into an intricate web of intergenerational conversations about life and death between women, real and fictional.

Love Streams is a two-act dance-opera that interweaves the chamber operas Heart of Coral and Women Like Us–commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2013 and 2021 respectively–helmed by acclaimed choreographer Yang Yuntao. Heart of Coral tells of the tumultuous life of Xiao Hong (1911-1942), one of the most celebrated female writers of the 1930s China, who lived through her short life with a fiery spirit of love and freedom. Women Like Us is a musical tribute to Hong Kong’s literary grande
dame Xi Xi (1937-) and a tale of two women finding hope in solitude, inspired by the protagonists of Xi Xi’s beloved short stories "A Girl Like Me" and "The Cold".
Whether in the frosty winter of the Chinese hinterland in the 1930s, or in urban Hong Kong in the 1980s, the yearning for love seems inseparable from historical, political and social forces, but audience members are sure to find inspiration in the underlying feminist perspectives of these two important modern writers.

This is how the film starts—with a gentle question from the richly nuanced chamber opera Heart of Coral, and a short, succinct reply from Xiao Hong that sets the tone and attitude for the rest of it.
Love Streams is a dance-opera that brings together Heart of Coral, a biography of late Chinese writer Xiao Hong, and Women Like Us, a literary work adapted from Xi Xi’s classic short stories
“A Girl Like Me” and “The Cold”. With music and dance being highly communicative by nature, Love Streams is a conversation among different generations, a multiverse of different realities.
Like Them, Like Us documents the sitzprobes and dance rehearsals behind the stage production—made even more difficult by the pandemic—and we look deep into the words of
the director and choreographer, Yang Yuntao, and other main creators and cast members. A compassionate approach to life is explored and amplified through the interpersonal dynamics of body movements, and, through the power of the lens. Discussions on the fragility of life and the complex nature of human psychology are taken from the stage to the widescreen and everywhere in between. Although these are tender and delicate portrayals of women, these powerful life narratives can apply to both men and women together as humanity. Everyone involved in the film is nothing but humbled and grateful for all the hard work that went into the stage production. May it serve as a tender reminder for anyone at some point, even when life hits hard, to look inward for answers, because there we find a choice and an invitation to let life streams open up and carry us forward.

The women who leapt through time
Love Streams is an eclectic piece that combines two chamber operas, Heart of Coral and Women Like Us. While the production is based on works involving two women writers (the former an operatic biography of mainland author Xiao Hong and the latter an adaptation of two short stories by Hong Kong writer Xi Xi), it is brought to life by choreographer Yang Yuntao, who turns the musical numbers into a music and visual feast of physical movements.
On the surface, Xiao Hong and Xi Xi have little in common— Xiao rose to fame in 1930s China
while Xi Xi is an active novelist writing from contemporary Hong Kong—except for their detached, almost unsympathetic portrayal of profoundly real female characters. Take a closer look, however, and you’ll see how the two were drawn, in different stages of their lives, to the port city of Hong Kong: Xi Xi moved here from Shanghai in her early teens, while Xiao Hong spent the last two years of her life in the city, where she completed her magnum opus, Tales of Hulan River. Yang’s remake of the two musical texts—documented in detail by Chung—thus becomes part of Hong Kong’s rich diasporic and literary history. But you’d be wrong if you thought
that the documentary was simply a byproduct of Yang’s dance opera, as Chung was determined to put her own contemplative spin on the production.
Chung’s first impression of Love Streams? A dizzying multiverse composed of multiple languages—music and dance, Cantonese and Mandarin—and conversations between women of different backgrounds and generations, including Xiao Hong and Xi Xi as well as librettists Wong Yi and Yan Yu, creating a dialogue that Chung readily takes part in using her own voice.

Capturing the unseen
To Chung, who grew up alongside an orchestra and plays several instruments herself, registering anything musicrelated has become second nature. She muses: “Since I’m not trained in theatre, I’m relatively free to do my own thing without getting trapped by preset boundaries, and I’m able to maintain an inquisitive mind while shooting.” She went on to do exactly just that— uncovering small details that would otherwise pass unnoticed in a live theatre setting, especially the unsung heroes hidden in the orchestra pit. “I like to think about the chemistry between the narrative, and the visual and musical elements. In the opera, Xiao Hong has had her throat cut open due to a misdiagnosis, a scene that the composer expresses through text painting: a shrill squeak produced by crotales and a vibraphone stroked by a double bass bow. I literally had goosebumps all over me! This is the power of the camera—to visualise the angst and dread experienced by the character, and to capture things that the naked eye cannot,” Chung says.
This is perhaps why Yang’s philosophy clicks so well with Chung, with the two sharing an appreciation of little things such as self-restraint. “When Yuntao told us, ‘Sometimes you can be seen only if you concede’, he means that we need to respect one another’s roles and positions without intruding on others’ boundaries. Dancers dance. Singers sing. That’s it—and voilà, everything falls into place,” she explains.
A journey of healing and reconciliation
Just as involvement in the arts often does, making the documentary served as a healing process for Chung—much like the thangka paintings she loves. And unlike many people, she sees something beyond the short life of Xiao Hong. “Xiao Hong died when she was only 31, and most people would think of her life as a tragedy. But her words show otherwise—a defiant spirit and love of life shine through in, ironically, her brilliant depiction of death,” Chung says.
Similarly, Chung’s work is permeated by a constant reflection on death, though not necessarily in a tragic sense. The shooting of the film coincided with a dramatic event in Chung’s private life, with a close friend experiencing a tragic
loss. This led Chung to rethink the meaning of her work. “We are weighed down by our past and various emotions like regret and trauma, and this is because there’s too much noise in our heads,” she says. “Through this film, and through the ‘voices’ of these dancers and singers, I want to help the audience find their own voice amid this noise, and to reconcile with their past selves.”
Rather than simply preaching positive thinking, Chung hopes the documentary provides companionship and a source of strength that helps viewers face up to their past and live in the present.

Winner of two Hong Kong Dance Awards in 2003 and 2006 for his outstanding dance performances, and named the Best Artist (Dance) at the 2009 Hong Kong Arts Development Awards, Yang Yuntao is an accomplished dancer and choreographer. He joined Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) in 2002 as Principal Dancer. He became the company’s Assistant Artistic Director in 2007 and has been its Artistic Director since November 2013.
Yang has choreographed for various dance companies. His award-winning choreography credits for the HKDC include: Spring Ritual Eulogy, which won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Production at the 2013 Hong Kong Dance Awards and was presented in Beijing and Taipei in 2013; The Legend of Mulan, winner of the award for Outstanding Production and Outstanding Ensemble Performance at the 2014 Hong Kong Dance Awards and presented in
New York and Sydney in 2015, London in 2017 and Minsk in 2019; Storm Clouds, winner of three awards at the 2015 Hong Kong Dance Awards; L’Amour Immortel, winner of three awards at the 2016 Hong Kong Dance Awards and presented in Beijing, Guangzhou, Taipei, Shanghai and Hangzhou from 2017 to 2019; Waiting Heart, winner of the 2019 Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Medium Venue Production; and Convergence, winner of the 2022 Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Online Production. After graduating from BSc Psychology with first-class honours at the University of York, Stephanie Chung returned to Hong Kong also with Double MScs in Global Media and Communications from the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, and the University of Southern California.
She was a fashion editor at Harvey Nichols before becoming a freelancer, and has been engaged in copywriting, content creation and imagemaking projects with Tsz Shan Monastery, Art Basel, K11 ATELIER and more.
In recent years, Chung has taken an interest in Tibetan thangka paintings and was trained by Martha Collard as a gong player in meditative practices. Drawing
insights from her varied fields of work, she aspires to embody the essence of non-duality in the healing power of art forms.
In 2021, Chung was commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival for the production of Dirty, a virtual dance dialogue on the existence of body and being, and the oneness of life and death.
鍾浩敏 STEPHANIE CHUNG 紀錄片導演 Film Director About Stephanie Chung 關於鍾浩敏 鍾浩敏畢業於英國約克大學心 理學學士(一級榮譽),並持 倫敦政治經濟學院及美國南加 州大學全球傳播學雙碩士。她 曾任夏菲尼高(香港)時裝編 輯,其後轉投自由身工作,分 別與香港慈山寺、巴塞爾藝術 展及 K11 ATELIER 合作,並分別 參與文案編輯、内容及影像創 作等工作。 近年,鍾氏投身西藏唐卡藝術 創作,並參與紅門聲療工作室 創辦人瑪莎歌拉德主持的冥想 銅鑼療法。她希望透過融匯各 方面的工作,以藝術創作療癒 心靈,解放世間束縛。 於 2021 年,鍾氏受香港藝術節 委托參與《得體》的舞蹈錄像 創作,透過虛擬舞蹈展開一場 探索身體與生死的對話。

陳慶恩現為香港大學陳健華陳 遠嫻基金明德教授(音樂)。 創作以擅於糅合中西特色見 稱,作品曾於世界各地重要的 藝術節上演。近作包括四齣室 內歌劇( 2021、2018、2015、 2013 )。
Chan Hing-yan is currently James Chen & Yuen-Han Chan Professor in Music at the University of Hong Kong. Lauded for their subtle mediation between Chinese elements and Western idioms, his compositions have been heard around the world at prestigious festivals. Recent works include four chamber operas (2021, 2018, 2015, 2013).
Daniel Lo Ting-cheung is one of the most active composers in Hong Kong, frequently commissioned by leading local institutions such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.
Lo’s works cover a wide range of musical genres, from orchestral to vocal pieces. One of Lo’s current compositional interests is seeking ways to integrate music with Hong Kong literature.
Lo completed his PhD (Composition) at the University of York in the UK in 2017, fully supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund.

33 Composers’ Profile 編創人員簡介 盧定彰 Daniel Lo Ting- cheung 《兩個女子》作曲家 Composer of Women Like Us 盧定彰是近年最炙手可熱的本 地作曲家之一,致力創作糅合 文學和音樂的演出,特別是以 華語演唱的聲樂作品。近作包 括室內歌劇《兩個女子》、多媒 體音樂劇場《幸福家庭與狗》、 清唱劇《艾布爾的夜宴》和合 唱作品《瑪麗個案》。 除了以文學為靈感的作品,盧 氏近年亦分別為香港小交響樂 團和香港創樂團的亞洲巡演創 作管弦樂和室樂作品。 盧氏 2009 年以一級榮譽畢業 於香港大學文學院 (音樂系), 2012 年取得作曲哲學碩士學 位,同年獲香港賽馬會音樂及 舞蹈信託基金全額贊助,前赴 英國深造,2017 年於約克大學 完成作曲博士課程。
