1998 was a very productive year for the Hong Kong Dance Alliance. The HKDA Executive Committee held monthly meetings with Committee membership representing a broad spectrum of dance professionals. New to the HKDA Executive Committee for 1998 was Ms. Diana Yau of the Hong Kong Dancing Centre. Ms. Yau plunged right into her duties as a HKDA Executive Committee member by accepting the chairmanship of the organizing committee for the Hong Kong Dance Alliance Gala to be held in conjunction with a proposed Hong Kong Outstanding Dance Artists Awards ceremony. In August 1998, HKDA Chairman, Tom Brown and ViceChairman, Willy Tsao represented Hong

Kong at the World Dance Alliance. Asia Pacific Summit meeting held in Manila. During 1998. Mr. Tsao and fellow vice-chairman Chu Kit continued their representation of the HKDA at the Hong Kong Dance Sector Joint Conference. Mr. Tsao was also the chairman of the organizing committee of Hong Kong's first Dance Day, a Joint Conference event. Ms. Chu Kit served on the Chinese Dance editorial board and Mr. Tsao and member Wendy Chu served on the Modern Dance editorial board of the Joint Conference's ‘Hong Kong Dance History' publication.

Members of this project also include staff of HKDA institutional members.

During this period, the HKDA also presented its second All Independent Dance Series and began planning for a very exciting and productive 1999.

Second All Independent Dance Series

This highly successful second installment of the All Independent Dance Series was presented by the HKDA, with funding support from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, sponsored by Philip Morris Asia Incorporated, with venue support from the Provisional Urban Council, the Hong Kong Arts Centre, the Hong Kong Festival Fringe, and with rehearsal venue and administration support from the City Contemporary Dance Company. Presented were an exciting series of four independent dance groups over a four week period in sold-out performances at the McAulay Studio of the Hong Kong Arts Centre in the month of April 1998, three public forums at the Fringe Club in May 1998, and 'Deca-Dance' - an evening length presentation of the works of eight choreographers to enthusiastic audiences and critical praise at the Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in June 1998.

The 'Deca-Dance' performance at the Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre presented the works of Yeung Chi-kuk, Lee Siu Ling and Nelson Hui, Tan Siew Lan, Yap Poo Meng and Eve Cheng Chor Kuen, Daniel Yeung, Delina Law and Jocelyn Chung to capacity audiences and served as a thrilling finale to the All Independent Dance Series project.

II. OTHER HAPPENINGS IN 1998 1. Hong Kong Dance Centre Working Group As an outgrowth of the All Independent Dance Series forum. Dance Centre: Vision for the 21st Century, the Hong Kong Dance Alliance Executive Board appointed Mr. Kwong Wai-lap, General Manager of HKDA institutional member City Contemporary Dance Company, to further develop plans for a Hong Kong Dance Centre. Mr. Kwong has formed an advisory committee, which has been charged with commissioning a feasibility study of a site selected by the committee for the new dance centre. Plans for a building on the site and

specifications for the centre are under development

by Mr. Kwong's group. The future Dance Centre is envisioned as a place where the community will be able to find information on dance and dance activities in Hong Kong as well as a place for dance artists to perform, meet and find administrative, marketing, technical, and rehearsal support.

The second All Independent Dance Series forum, New Opportunity in Dance Education, has also resulted in the formation of a working group. The HKDA Executive Board appointed Margaret Carlson, Dean of Dance of HKDA institutional member Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, School of Dance

with the responsibility of setting up a working group to further develop plans for dance education and a specialist school of dance in Hong Kong. Dean Carlson has assembled a group of twenty-two Hong Kong dance education experts who are working together to produce a position paper for the HKDA to present to government, with the intention of soliciting broad community support for the goals of the paper. The working group also plans to survey international models in dance education with the intention of developing a concrete plan for Hong Kong that includes a specialist secondary school in Dance.

十四日在香港文化中心大堂及露天廣場完滿結來：香港舞 蹈聯盟是典屮一個主辦困體。有約二?A名人仕參與和欣赏

的紀綠足以引炝這项活動的成功。除身為籌委倉主席曹誠

淵先生外•香港舞蹈聯盟團微會貝如香港舞蹈困、香港芭

蕾舞團、城市當代舞蹈困及香港演棼學院均有份參與其 中•这四個母蹈團微在文化中心廣場內為《母蹈日》特別

建設的紫荊舞台上合作演出一個長達一小時的表演節目 。 另一方面•香港演锯學院及城市當代母站困晚間舞蹈採粗

的學生更靓身為『集燃舞』作示範•作為活動的一個並■點 節0 •『集燃舞』後來自不同年齡的學來演繹多位香港

HKDA Participation in Hong Kong's First Dance Day

The HKDA was a central participant in Hong Kong's first Dance Day celebration held in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre lobby and in the outside piazza and plaza areas on 14 November 1998. The event was a huge success with reports of an estimated 20,000 participants and spectators. In addition to Mr. Tsao’s role as chairman of the organizing committee HKDA participation included institutional members The Hong Kong Dance Company, the Hong Kong Ballet, the City Contemporary Dance Company, and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts School of Dance.

These groups performed a special one-hour show on the event's specially constructed 'Bauhinia' stage in the piazza. Additionally, students from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the City Contemporary Dance Company evening dance courses acted as demonstrators of the "Dance-ALong", one of the many highlights of the event in which scores of dancers of all ages from all over Hong Kong performed a dance choreographed by prestigious Hong Kong choreographers. Mr. Tsao and Ms. Chu Kit were members of the choreography committee which selected choreographers and organized teams to 'spread the dance' throughout Hong Kong in preparation for the Dance Day celebration. HKDA individual member Wendy Chu provided a I a ba notation score of the " Dance-A-Long " an excerpt of which is printed here.

Ill FUTURE PLANS 1. Third All Independent Dance Series Plans are under way for the All Independent Dance Series '99. In addition to the McAuley Studio series, the Fringe Forums, and the 'Deca-Dance' performance at the Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, new features planned for this third installment are a 'Newcomers' series at the Fringe Theatre, a Dance Film, that will highlight artists from the series, a Dance Critics Workshop, a Dance Education Workshop, and the publication of dance notation textbook. A final event in the Third All Independent Dance Series will be a Hong Kong Outstanding Dance Artists Awards ceremony held in conjunction with a HKDA Gala at which dance artists, companies and choreographers will be honored for their outstanding achievement to dance in the preceding year. Funding and Sponsors are currently being sought to realize this ambitious project.

Discussions are also underway to include the Hong Kong Red Cross "Dance the World" celebration as part of our series.

The McAuley Studio series is planned for the Spring '99 season. Four dance groups will be selected; each will present a full-evening length concert of two performances. 'Deca-Dance' is planned for early July. The performance will be composed of nine ten-minute solo pieces between which the performers should work out a one-minute transition. City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) will provide rehearsal space and technical support. The 'Newcomers' series at the Fringe is also planned for the Spring '99 season. Programmes for this series will consist of six different groups or soloists per evening with each contributing a ten-minute segment. Performance fees will be paid to all selected artists. A selection committee with representatives from the Hong Kong Dance Alliance, the City Contemporary Dance Company, the Hong Kong Arts Centre, the Fringe, the Cultural Presentations Office of the Urban Services Department and Philip Morris Asia Incorporated will make the final selection of all artists selected for All Independent Dance Series '99 events.

Artists and groups interested in participating in the All Independent Dance Series '99 in any of the three events — the McAuley Studio series, the 'DecaDance' performance or the "Newcomers' series are invited to submit proposals directly to the producers of each of these segments. Proposals received after 15 February 1999 will not be considered.

2. 2000 Feet HKDA members have been invited to perform at the World Dance Alliance Summit Conference and International Dance Festival as part of the 2000 Feet Festival in Philadelphia, USA during the Week of 2027 June 1999. Members invited to perform are the City Contemporary Dance Company, Dance HK/NY, Dance Art, Mui Cheuk Yin, and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In addition, HKDA Chairman Tom Brown and Vice-Chairman Willy Tsao have been invited to represent Hong Kong at the World Dance Alliance summit meeting where members from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa will discuss issues in common with dancers and dance organizations everywhere.

3. Hong Kong Dance Alliance Membership Directory The directory of HKDA members is in progress with a target date of May 1999 for the first edition, in time to distribute it to attendees at the World Dance Alliance Summit Meeting in Philadelphia in June 1999. If you are already a member you will be asked to review your entry and provide any additional information required before publication.

Launch of "Dance Journal/Hong Kong"

The HKDA plans the launch of a new monthly 'Dance Journal/Hong Kong' which will provide critical writing on dance in Hong Kong together with a listing of dance events and a compilation of media coverage of dance. Mr. Willy Tsao, who will act as the publication's first editor, has assembled a team of enthusiastic dance writers and requests that anyone interested in dance criticism or writing about dance contact him at Tel: 2326-8597. The projected launch date for the new Dance Journal/ Hong Kong is January 1999.

1. Hong Kong Dance Company On 19 December 1998, the Company held its debut performance at its own rehearsal hall, which was transformed for the occasion into a mini theatre. The programme featured excerpts from Hong Kong Dance Company's past well-known dance dramas such as "Hua Pi", "Rouge" and "Jade Love".

An enthusiastic audience of 220 attended this first in an anticipated continuing series of many more concerts, events, and interesting and creative projects to come. A second event in the same space entitled "Show Within a Show" is scheduled for 6 February. This will be an interesting workshop on make-up. use of props, and poster design, etc.

The design of the programmes, packaging and actual performances of these two free activities have been undertaken by the company dancers. It is hoped that through these activities, dancers will be given more opportunity to develop their skills and their potential. The Hong Kong Dance Company also sees these events as a means to bring its audience closer to the workings of the company and the art of dance.

"The Dragon's Trail" will be the Company's first production of 1999. Scheduled for the City Hall Theatre on 29-31 of January this production features three moving dance pieces by artistic director Jiang Huaxuan and guest choreographers Helen Lai and Francis Leung. Since summer8*95, Francis, Yvette, Amanda and I have engaged in this battle of dreams. Bearing the motto "To dance for ourselves, to live with dignity and meaning",

we have brought modern dance to every corner of the city --- the streets, schools, centres for the elderly, reha­ bilitation centres, hospitals, shopping arcades, and theatres. Dances are created from and inspired by living experiences.

Performances are done not only on stages but in our surroundings. "Artists in Residencie": developing dance education for the mentally handicapped; creating dance and exhibitions for each dance season; overseas performances; cultural exchanges.... all are accomplished by human co-ordination and co-operation. We attribute our success to audience responses and self-development. We have a strong belief that we are liable for the development of modern dance in our society. Even given limited resources, we continue to bloom and glisten.

In 1999, owing to the uncertainty in subsidy provision, Dance Art will inevitably be forced to reduce its social services, dance education services, publications and communication work. All this may cause our audience and supporters to worry about the existence of the dance company in the foreseeable future. "Don’t worry. We will survive."

In view of the upcoming obstacles, I am glad that I can still dance heartily with pride, embracing both the sweetness and the bitter in life. I believe, going forward and hanging on with strength - That's the value of Life!
