普洛斯(1935-2012)一生,在其電影裏不斷變奏 賽之旅,探索着看得見和看不見的邊界,影像美學 的冒險將人引領至前所未到之境;而這旅程,永無 止境。
圓,拜占庭文化中標誌神聖的概念,是安氏電影擁 抱永恆與延續的符號。往復循環的尋父旅程,自小 深植於記憶之中:母親拖着他的手,在荒野亂屍堆 中尋找父親,成了畢生難以磨滅的烙印。由《塞瑟 島之旅》以至《霧中風景》,一直追尋是那流亡在 外、久別回家甚至不知存在與否的父親;由《尤利 西斯的凝望》、《一生何求》以至《時光微塵》, 在那亞歷山大或導演A的身影裏,不斷反思自我身 份、命運與歸宿。

His early childhood memories innately reflect a broader national trauma. The agonising experience of searching for a missing, or even non-existent, father becomes a metaphorical concept in his work, from Journey to
Cythera to Landscape in the Mist , that evokes the effects of war, emigration, and authoritarian society on families and communities. Simultaneously a tribute to and a reincarnation of the Greek epic poem, the emotional odyssey is also a yearning for reconnecting with the cultural past, while contemplating self-identity, artistic pursuit and ideological disillusionment, as seen through the characters of Alexander, or simply “A”, in Ulysses’ Gaze , Eternity and a Day and The Dust of Time . Deeply immersed in Hellenic culture, his films are coded with classical references, transfiguring Byzantine images and mythical personalities in Greek Tragedy to probe the roots of contemporary Greek society. Like
the travelling players who live through the turbulent times of the 20th century, the last modernist sought to capture the human toll of its tragic legacy, in his monumental fusion of history, myth and memory that is incisive and deeply moving. An epic poet of the cinema, Angelopoulos redefined the slow pan, the long take and tracking shots through his magisterial elliptical style, spatial coexistence and languidly unfolding narratives, providing “more freedom” for viewers to ponder upon his historical and political allegories. Failed idealism articulated through the elegiac image of Lenin’s dismantled statue; transcendence across borders conjured by the line of yellow jacketed refugees on the telephone poles; or dreams of hope evoked in the lone tree in the mist – all these emblematic imageries of poetic realism encapsulate Angelopoulos’ distinctive gaze of estrangement, and vision of redemption. The sudden arrival of the Angel of Death left his odyssey to The Other Sea unfinished. Yet, nothing ever ends. The end is where he starts from. PS: As if living through the journey, the cancellation of our first quarter programme is to make a new beginning. We go with films that have their own lives: see, they return, and bring us with them.

In a life of cinematic odyssey, he navigated distinctive aesthetics of myth and empathy, transposing us into a deep exploration and contemplation of exile, displacement and homecoming – a national and personal journey that fated to never end.

An experimental homage to the “free cinema” of the period, Angelopoulos’ debut short film begins like a cinema vérité, and is also a subtly absurdist and subversive satire that slyly past the censors during the beginning of military dictatorship. Comprising long takes and sequence shots which prefigure his signature style, the story follows a group of television journalists wandering around Athens, asking passersby for their definition of the “ideal man”. An ordinary man is randomly picked as the winner, whose ultimate award is no more than becoming a puppet in a media show. Screening with Reconstruction .

The darkening political landscape of 1936 sets the stage for drawing parallels with the 1970s for the first film in Angelopoulos’ “Trilogy of History”. In a Brechtian drama based on a real-life incident, a police informer accused of assassinating a trade unionist holds a politician hostage in his cell, leading to an absurd government crisis. Reconstructed in an oblique and elliptical narrative, the parody under an imposed silence denies everyone a clear picture, yet the high-angle long shots and the languorous 360-degree tracks and pans cast a sardonic eye on the ineptitudes of the bureaucrats and politicians, exposing an underlying truth beyond ambiguity.

Hailed as one of the most remarkable debuts ever, Angelopoulos’ modernist reconstruction of the Agamemnon tragedy heralded the New Greek Cinema Movement. A real-life crime committed in a forsaken village is construed as a complex interplay: of a case reenactment construed by the police, of a tabloid news reported by the journalists, and of the dying of the Greek traditional values under the military regime. Juxtaposing noir-inflected passion with incisive social study, the virtuoso feature, accentuated by the intensity of Giorgos Arvanitis’ stark black-and-white images, lays an overwhelming sense of loss and alienation in the deep soil of Angelopoulos’ oeuvre. Re-enacting the fates of the major figures in Aeschylus’ Oresteia , the travelling performers are caught in struggle, betrayal and tragic death amidst the swirling vortices of military junta, World War II and the aftermath of the Civil War. It’s New Year’s Eve, 1976. A group of bourgeois hunters preparing for a party comes upon the frozen remains of a partisan killed during the Greek civil war. The time for celebration is unexpectedly turned into an inquest into their troubling past, as the colonel, the industrialist, Nazi collaborators and royalist alike are forced to give an account of their unflattering actions. Merging poetic allegory and historic reconstruction in Brechtian dramaturgy, the film underlines a collective nightmare of guilty conscience, and an indictment of the nation’s deliberate suppression of painful history.
As part of a television series on the European cultural capitals, a different Athens is evoked under the lyrical lens of Angelopoulos, who captures the city he was born and raised with musings on its past and present, on national history and personal myth. Travelling from Acropolis to the Byzantine churches, the remains of the neo-classical homes, and searching for the houses in which he lived, his portrait of Athens is full of memories and inspirations, laced with the poetry of George Seferis and the paintings of Yannis Tsarouchis, and reminiscent of The Travelling Players .

Assuming the spiritual glory of the legendary Greek liberator, this great Alexander is a bandit who kidnaps a group of English aristocrats and holds them in a mountain village for political ransom. The mysterious hero soon turns into a Stalin-like tyrant, whose brutality in silence brings the ruins of Greece. Radiating with Angelopoulos’ ambition to create a blend of imaginative filmmaking with classical Greek tragedy forms, this parable is a provocative examination on demythification – from the roots of legend, socialist ideals, to the vain promises of the new century, yet leaving a faint sense of hope in the reincarnated young Alexander.
Setting out to contrast the truth inherent in the Homeric myth of Odysseus and the bleak reality of modern Greek, Angelopoulos contrived a film-within-a-film narrative as a metaphor for searching for a displaced father. Returning from exile in the Soviet Union, the old leftist attempts to reconnect with his former life and his ancestral land, only to find a son and a country become virtually unknown to him, and a life destined to be adrift. The first chapter in the “Trilogy of Silence”, this is a profoundly poetic meditation on a man’s failure to reconcile with his present, and a country’s inability to resolve with its past.

Chronicling the aimless life of a middle-aged schoolteacher, this is a dark and sombre portrait of profound disconnection, solitude and obsolescence. Embarking on his family traditional vocation of apiculture to get away from strained family relations, the man of the past desperately attempts to connect with the realities of an unfamiliar modern world through a promiscuous young hitchhiker who lives for the present, only to confirm his disenchantment with the future. In the legendary Marcello Mastroianni's Spyros the father figure reincarnates, embracing the solemn silence and loneliness in a deeply personal journey that starts and ends with the doomed fate of his hives.

When a left-wing Chile-based American journalist goes missing, his conservative pro-establishment father and his wife must overcome their political differences to find him. Together, they discover that the US government not only aided in the coup but knows more about the disappearance than it lets on. As strikingly realistic as it is, the film was ensnared in a lawsuit for libel by the former US Ambassador. Though a continuation of Costa-Gavras’ longtime creative interest in exposing authoritarian regimes and those who enable them, this controversial Palme d'Or winner also goes beyond that as a sincere character drama about trauma and truths bridging one family’s ideological divide.

Together, they discover that the US government not only aided in the coup but knows more about the disappearance than it lets on. As strikingly realistic as it is, the film was ensnared in a lawsuit for libel by the former US Ambassador. Though a continuation of Costa-Gavras’ longtime creative interest in exposing authoritarian regimes and those who enable them, this controversial Palme d'Or winner also goes beyond that as a sincere character drama about trauma and truths bridging one family’s ideological divide.

The Marriage Circle is a perfect example of his bold, taboo-breaking style, challenging social mores with his sexually liberated and progressive protagonists. Transitioning seamlessly from the silent era into talkies, Lubitsch worked consistently with the biggest stars in the industry, while “the Lubitsch touch” became a brand unto itself. His brazenly frank and ribald comedies, such as Trouble in Paradise and Design for Living fell foul of the censors,

Many of Lubitsch's films are set in prominent European cities like Paris, Budapest or Warsaw, rather than in America, while his protagonists are frequently foreigners navigating strange new lands, as envoys, diplomats, or those seeking safety or asylum. Yet, even with the world in turmoil, he continued to work almost exclusively within the realm of romantic comedy, following characters who disregard politics in the pursuit of personal happiness. The ineffable quality of “the Lubitsch touch” is hard to define, but can be vividly experienced through his works: it is a style so witty, so ironic, so incisive, arranged with tight plots and refined visuals in conjunction with verbal thrusts and parries which elicits spiritual transcendence of the films. In Lubitsch’s world, he offers us an opportunity to escape, whether from the constraints of social etiquette, or more serious threats to our freedoms and prosperity, and it remains today as vital, and delightful, as ever.

In his second Hollywood film, Ernst Lubitsch adapts Lothar Schmidt’s play Only a Dream into a wickedly funny and progressive comedy of manners. A neglected and pathologically unfaithful wife sets her sights on seducing her best friend’s new husband. Her professor husband hires a private detective to investigate her, and the results prove chaotically witty. Inspired by Chaplin’s A Woman of Paris (1923), this merry-go-round of marital misunderstandings maneuvered through jealousy, infidelity and sexuality see his inventive comic sensibility and artfully-constructed direction elevate to new heights. Lubitsch would go on to remake the film in 1932 with George Cukor, as the talkie One Hour with You .
Hugely controversial at the time of its release for its frank discussions of sexual behaviour, Lubitsch’s loose adaptation of Noël Coward’s Broadway play proved a notable box office success and is now regarded as a classic of Hollywood’s pre-Code era. Split between Paris, London and New York, it sees a charming girl-of-fortune meeting and falling in love with two handsome Americans: a struggling painter and his best friend, an equally unsuccessful playwright. Unable to choose between her two suitors, the trio enters into a platonic three-way relationship with predictably calamitous, yet often hilarious, results.

In his second Hollywood film, Ernst Lubitsch adapts Lothar Schmidt’s play Only a Dream into a wickedly funny and progressive comedy of manners. A neglected and pathologically unfaithful wife sets her sights on seducing her best friend’s new husband. Her professor husband hires a private detective to investigate her, and the results prove chaotically witty. Inspired by Chaplin’s A Woman of Paris (1923), this merry-go-round of marital misunderstandings maneuvered through jealousy, infidelity and sexuality see his inventive comic sensibility and artfully-constructed direction elevate to new heights. Lubitsch would go on to remake the film in 1932 with George Cukor, as the talkie One Hour with You .
Hugely controversial at the time of its release for its frank discussions of sexual behaviour, Lubitsch’s loose adaptation of Noël Coward’s Broadway play proved a notable box office success and is now regarded as a classic of Hollywood’s pre-Code era. Split between Paris, London and New York, it sees a charming girl-of-fortune meeting and falling in love with two handsome Americans: a struggling painter and his best friend, an equally unsuccessful playwright. Unable to choose between her two suitors, the trio enters into a platonic three-way relationship with predictably calamitous, yet often hilarious, results.

With the delightful air of almost Shakespearean farce, Lubitsch’s witty adaptation of Miklós László’s Hungarian stage play is justly regarded as one of Hollywood’s finest romantic comedies. Set in a small leather goods boutique in Budapest, Stewart and Sullavan are both charming as a pair of store clerks, whose escalating contempt for one another is undercut by the blossoming romance that unwittingly develops between them via passionate anonymous correspondences. Delving into lives haunted by the ghosts of the past, these episodes explore the impact our words and deeds have upon others. "Can you steal something that is yours?" is a question raised in The Decalogue: Seven , in which a young woman abducts her daughter from her mother, who has “stolen” and raised the child as her own. The Decalogue: Eight follows a translator’s meeting with an ethics professor who had refused to shelter her family during the Holocaust, believing that a fake christening would bear false witness to God. This action puts the child's life in grave danger, and ends up in her own remorse.
Shooting for the first time outside Poland, Kieślowski gave full rein to his interest in metaphysical concerns, leaving politics and everyday realism behind for a highly expressionist spiritual fable of intertwined destinies. Two young women who are doubles unbeknownst to one another – Poland’s Weronika and France’s Véronique – reach an intersection in their lives where one finds love and the other death. The Double Life of Véronique evokes his most ravishing rumination on coincidence and synchronicity, in which the heightened expression of sound and image found renewed intensity through his collaboration with cinematographer Sławomir Idziak, composer Zbigniew Preisner, and sound designer Jacques Witta.

Inspired by the motto of the French Republic, the Three Colours Trilogy was meant as Kieślowski’s valedictory statement exploring the meaning of liberty, equality and fraternity in contemporary life. In Three Colours: Blue , the mesmerising Juliette Binoche is the widow of a renowned composer, who seeks an existence free from any bonds after her husband and daughter die in a car accident, only to find herself inseparable from others connected to her in myriad ways. Kieślowski’s mystical vision of transcendent spiritual forces that unite us resonated within the context of a postCold War Europe on the brink of reunification and facing the anxieties of a new millennium.
Youthful idealism and innocence are confronted with the jaded and cynical perspective of old age in Kieślowski’s magisterial swansong. When a young model accidentally runs over a dog, the incident brings her in contact with a retired judge who has a habit of spying on others. These explorations of voyeurism and authorial omniscience – ways in which man tries to play God, even he struggles to find love – culminate in a tempest worthy of Shakespeare. Three Colours: White reunites Kieślowski with actors Zbigniew Zamachowski (The Decalogue: Ten ) and Jerzy Stuhr (Camera Buff ) for a black comedy that satirises globalisation even as it affirms his faith in love and spiritual redemption.
