This year, our students have distinguished themselves in various fields. Our graduates have once again been admitted to the finest universities in the world. In athletics, HKIS was awarded a top prize by the Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation. This was based on our students’ capabilities in inter-school athletics, performance and attitude in sports on and off the field. Our Choral and Woodwind students placed very

well at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, and the Middle School Handbell Choir will be going to the International Handbell Symposium in Toronto, Canada later this summer. In terms of service, 320 high school students participated in the Service on Saturday program this year. These are accomplishments of which we are very proud. I would like to acknowledge our alumni and the Alumni Board for your loyalty and support toward HKIS. I would also like to congratulate you on several successful events in Hong Kong, including the May 8th prom that saw about 100 guests. The overseas alumni reunions that

I was fortunate to attend were also very well received. I am always impressed with the bond that I see at the reunions - whether we meet HKIS Crusaders of the 60s, or the Dragons of the 90s, your fondness for HKIS is alike and unswerving. Please continue to stay in touch with the Alumni Office, and update us on your latest news. Our alumni are a wonderful legacy for HKIS. Sincerely,

Bill Wehrenberg Head of School

Dear HKIS Alumni:

Message from the CRD Director Dear Alumni: We are pleased to announce that, as of press time, the Annual Fund has surpassed our goal by a million dollars, to reach HK$9 million. We are also very excited that the 5th Annual Fund Ball (on May 29) raised an unprecedented HK$4 million towards this. Programs supported by the Annual Fund, such as the Orchestra, Merit and Need-Based Scholarships, the Visiting Scholar Series, the Family Center, and the Alumni-sponsored History Project, will continue to enrich the lives of our students.

Your Alumni Decade Chairs did a wonderful job in reaching out to former HKIS students. Dave Christian ’69, Rob Dorfman ’72, Timothy Zee ’84, Wendy Hsu ’85, Timothy Chen ’92 and Philip Chen ’97 contacted alumni both in Hong Kong and overseas to encourage support. With the 2003/2004 Annual Fund campaign running until July 31, there is still time for you to make a gift. So far, 42 alumni have made donations totalling HK$132,000. In terms of participation, the class of

’86 is leading all other class years. We hope that you will be inspired by your fellow alumni, and consider making a gift to the Annual Fund today. For your convenience, online giving is available at http://dnet.hkis.edu.hk/giving. All the best,

HKIS’ Kent Ewing relates exchange experience

by Jennifer Kay Chan

Scott, Kent, Mary and Jackie Ewing

Kent Ewing, english and humanities teacher at HKIS since 1990, has been on a one-year exchange program at Northfield Mount Hermon School in western Massachusetts. He is working at Northfield for a year, while Northfield humanities teacher Ted Kenyon, is teaching humanities at HKIS for the school year. Kent, his wife Mary (who worked in the Admissions office) and children Scott and Jackie are with him at Northfield. Dragontales contacted Kent Ewing’s to share his experiences of this exchange opportunity. The teacher exchange with Northfield Mount Hermon School came about as a result of the ongoing relationship HKIS has maintained with the NMH headmaster, Richard Mueller, who before taking up his position at NMH was the American Consul General in Hong Kong. This is a oneyear exchange (Ted Kenyon is my exchange partner) that we hope will continue with other teachers. We also hope it will prompt not just individual growth but also ongoing philosophical and pedagogical dialogue between the schools, which have a great deal in common. For example, it has been very helpful for me to compare the HKIS interdisciplinary humanities program to a similar NMH program in which I have worked this year. There is much the two schools can learn from each other. In terms of differences between the two schools, a big one is physical size: NMH is a boarding school on

It’s huge and it’s beautiful and also (if you ask my African wife, she will freely tell you) it is bitterly cold in the winter. But kids are kids, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed teaching here. When I’m in the classroom, I feel much the same as I do at HKIS. In fact, about half the students in my US history class this term are from Hong Kong! I’m trying to convince them to come home and enroll at HKIS. A conflict of interest? Maybe. I should also mention that teachers here are required to do dorm duty one night a week every week and also for two weekends during each of the three terms. This has not been my favorite part of the exchange. Every one of the more than 1,000 students at NMH is required not only

to take a certain course load each term, but they are also assigned a job to do: from cleaning the bathrooms to preparing food in the dining hall to grooming the horses in the school’s barn. Every student—regardless of his or her background, rich or poor— must take a job. The program has been part of the history of the school since it was founded in 1879 by the famous evangelist, Dwight L. Moody. Somehow I doubt this idea would be terribly popular at HKIS. In terms of culture shock, I suppose like just about everybody else who visits the States discovers, we found Americans to be friendly people who don’t know much about Hong Kong. So we spent a good portion of our time here explaining where we’re from and what it’s like there. Lessons that we will bring back to Hong Kong with us are: 1) We are lucky to work at a school that wants to provide growth opportunities like this to their teachers. 2) We are blessed to be such a close family, and this experience has brought us even closer.

We are lucky to work at a school [HKIS] that wants to provide growth opportunities like this to their teachers.

psychology instead of switching into a marine biology program which I had been seriously considering. I definitely want to work with children. I enjoyed developing relationships with them and learning that you can’t work with all the children in the same way. You have to adjust your approach to suit the needs of that child whether academically, socially, or in sports.”

Anel Kirsten ’98, graduate of HKIS walked into the grade 3/4 combination cluster and asked if she could volunteer her time for a semester. The reply was met with a quick yes and a perplexed look by her former grade 4/5 teacher, Michael Lambert. Upon the first day of the students’ arrival in August to the end of the first semester, Anel volunteered her time every single day beginning at 7:45 and ending at 11:30. Anel helped students with their reading and writing skills as well as develope their proficiency in math. Her afternoons were met with a paying job. Each day Anel met with small groups of students, circulated the classroom giving individual assistance and then joined the students for recess playing a game of four square or tetherball. Students called her Ms. Anel and it was evident a positive relationship had begun. Anel’s assistance moved beyond more than just helping students academically. She would often share some of her personal experiences such as teaching others how to scuba dive and how

to write articles for National Geographic. The class listened, and definitely ‘heard’ what she had to say. They connected to Anel as if she were the admired older sister. She did more than assist the teacher, she gave students the additional listening time that they often craved Anel created personal time for every student! Molly Treangen, currently in Mr. Lamber t’s class and a future graduate of HKIS (2012) emails Anel weekly, even though a year has passed. Molly wrote in her journal, “I hope Ms. Anel will become a teacher and work for HKIS. I would feel lucky to be her real student.” The grade 3/4 students asked Ms. Anel what her reflections were about volunteering, “I loved working in 3/4! Working with the kids in 3/4 convinced me to continue with

We asked Anel her plans for the future and she told us all with a hearty laugh, “I wish I knew! I am constantly changing my short-term plans at the moment, but I am definitely looking at going to graduate school. I want to continue with psychology, specifically pediatric clinical psychology.” After graduating from the University of Toronto with a Honors BSc: double majoring in psychology and sociology focused on criminology, Anel continues to visit our community and shares her smile with us all — one we captured and treasured every day. Anel Kirsten, dedicating her mind to inquiry, her heart to compassion and her life to service and global understanding. Mission accomplished.

The Alumni College & Career Night at HKIS drew hundreds of current students that were interested in learning about higher education and careers. During the College Fair from 7 pm - 8 pm, over 25 colleges and universities were represented, with their alumni on-hand to answer questions. Schools included prestigious institutions such as Yale, Stanford, Cornell, Columbia, Princeton, MIT, and Berkeley, among others.

Ken Rohrs poses on the 4th level of the middle school

Ken Rohrs began his career at HKIS teaching grade 7 students in 1973 under Head of School Dr. Christian. He has taught mathematics and science to grade 7 and grade 8 students for three decades. “Teaching is a calling, not a job.” As Ken Rohrs speaks about what has kept him at HKIS for the last 30 years, several things become apparent. He is passionately devoted to our institution, and educates his students both inside and outside the classroom. He dedicates much of his personal time to continuous learning, as a student as often as he is a teacher. He is very grateful for the opportunities HKIS has afforded him, and for its commitment to professional development. “Each year I relish taking courses and attending professional conferences,” the San Francisco-native says. “An engaged teacher loves life-long learning and the excitement of life.” In addition to the two master degrees he has (see sidebar for his educational credentials), Ken has taken a course or enrolled in a workshop almost every summer that he has been in Hong Kong. “I am continually inspired to incorporate new ideas into my teaching.” And whether the students were from days gone by or are his current ones, all have benefitted

from the high value that HKIS places on professional growth for faculty. When asked why he loves to teach grade 7 and 8 students (and why he prefers to stay with these grades), Rohrs becomes thoughtful. “At that age in life, the students are no longer children, and are not yet teenagers, so it’s a wonderful opportunity to plant seeds and encourage them.” A teacher at this stage can have a strong impact on a student, and for this, he considers himself very blessed. Contrasting his early days of teaching at HKIS to the present, Rohrs has seen growth and technology affect the school. “While these are both positive, and have created great efficiencies at the school, they can also offer less freedom for the students. I highly value some degree of independence in my students, so that they can grow into making wise decisions for themselves.”

in the Philippines for the World Division of the United Methodist Church. He taught science to students on Cabaruyan Island, where he met and married his wife Urduja; they came to HKIS in 1973. HKIS clearly agreed with Rohrs, because although he had originally intended to stay for one year, he has n o w been at HKIS for 30. His daughters, Irene ’97 and Maria ’94 were born in Hong Kong, and both attended HKIS for their primary and secondary education. Sadly, after 25 years of marriage, his wife passed away from

And this August, he himself will be exchanging vows with Karen Cook, who works at HKIS in Student Services at the middle school. Rohrs frequently initiates hiking trips with colleagues on the weekends or holidays. He relishes excursions such as the bicycling trips that he has organized for many a Peak Week. Ken has also found the time to sit on many school committees to help HKIS improve and become an even better institution, including the Alumni Board. Reflecting upon what he feels he has brought to HKIS, Rohrs says “I hope that my students will contribute positively to the world, and that I have provided a nourishing environment to prepare them for that.” With Ken as a role model,

The Louis Vuitton 150th anniversary party held at the Tamar site ...was most successful, exciting and memorable. I think we ’raised the bar’ on how to host an event.

Andrew Glenn ’91 Fashions a career in PR Local HKIS alumnus, Andrew Glenn’91 was once writing juicy society/gossip columns for the South China Morning Post. He was a magazine editor when he interviewed HKIS alumni about the history of the school, and now as press and public relations manager of Louis Vuitton Asia Pacific, he jets around promoting the splendours of the French Malletier. On the occasion of Louis Vuitton’ s 150th anniversary, he spent some time chatting with the Alumni Office.

California. After a year, I decided I missed life in the big city and transferred to New York University and majored in Journalism & Mass Communications, graduating Cum Laude in 1995. During my last year I spent several days a week working as an editorial assistant intern at Fairchild Publications, home to Women’s Wear Daily, W and DNR. Assisting on several fashion shoots there became pivotal in my career choices later.

Tell us about your family and your life at HKIS.

Where do you work? How did you get your current position?

I was born in Hong Kong, and spent my early years in the British education system attending Kennedy Road Junior School. My father was in advertising and owned his own agency, which he sold to an American advertising company who therefore transferred us to Chicago when I was nine. When I turned 12 my family decided to move back to Hong Kong, and my parents enrolled me at HKIS since I had already completed three years in the American system. In 1985 I entered 7th grade and graduated in 1991, spending 6 years at HKIS. Life at HKIS was so international, in terms of your friends, teachers and travel. As a student the highlight of each year back then, had to be Interim!

I currently work at Louis Vuitton Asia Pacific as senior press & public relations manager for Asia Pacific, managing a publicity footprint of 14 countries (not including Japan.) Prior to that I was managing editor of Hong Kong Tatler magazine based in Hong Kong, also managing the regional content of the Tatler group’s other regional titles. Before that I was working in New York at a fashion and luxury good PR firm handling clients including Dunhill, Etro and Burberry. It was a good ‘boot camp’ for the savage PR game that is the New York fashion industry.

What happened after you left HKIS ? I went to Occidental College in 12

Hong Kong International School

Who were you most excited to interview? If referring to Tatler it would have to be Joyce Ma, who was (and still is) a fashion icon. She put fashion on the map in Hong Kong from a European perspective.

“As a student the highlight of each year back then, had to be Interim!”

Describe your day at Louis Vuitton Asia Pacific as senior press & public relations manager for Asia Pacific There isn’t really a typical day in the PR department of Louis Vuitton. At a most general level there is communication with local and regional media, responding to requests and pitching ideas. However, part of PR is organising events, from the scope of the 150 th anniversary to intimate media presentations with models, to store opening cocktails and the like. I travel a great deal around the region and to Paris, of course.

Tell us about some of the most successful/exciting/memorable events you planned ?

That’s me at graduation. That’s Mr. Handrich on the left.

“I was working in New York at a fashion and luxury good PR firm handling clients including Dunhill, Etro and Burberry. It was a good ‘boot camp’ for the savage PR game that is the New York fashion industry.”

At Tatler it would have to the Tatler Ball - getting 400 of the who’s who of Hong Kong into one ballroom. In Hong Kong it is no easy task, especially when it comes to the seating arrangement! At Louis Vuitton we are constantly organizing exciting events around the region, from small store openings to media presentations. I would say the Louis Vuitton 150th anniversary party held at the Tamar site fits all three questions: it was the most successful, exciting and memorable. I think we ‘raised the bar ’ on how to host an event.

How would you describe the recent celebration of the 150th anniversary of Louis Vuitton? The party was held inside a 72m x 30m x 16m tent structure, which in the evening thanks to very high-tech PIGI projections from France turned the venue into a giant ‘trunk’ . I guess you could say it was truly a party of epic proportions, quite literally. We

had literally a galaxy of stars attend. Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child sang. An 18-minute live-animation “show” literally had people’s jaws drop. From the press coverage we received I think you could call it a textbook case in terms of marketing. All the right elements combined to create the perfect recipe for a party that I believe will be remembered in years to come.

“I learned the value

What is most important to you as a person? Health, family and friends. That’s the key to success and happiness. Career and money tie in a close fourth!

What advice would you give to seniors or young alumni thinking about careers in PR. To intern at as many different companies as you can at college. My first real job resulted from it.

and importance of friendship from HKIS”

What did you take from your experiences at HKIS? I learned the value and importance of friendship from HKIS. I still have many friends whom I met through HKIS; I cannot say the same about college. I think being in from such diverse backgrounds made our bonds tighter. I am still in touch with Margaret McBride ’91, Gabrielle Tuscher ’92, Rick Johannessen ’92 and quite a few others.

Who was your favourite teacher at HKIS? That would have to be a toss-up between history teacher Rick Hunt who was also my swim coach for the six years I spent at HKIS, and Anna Maakestad who taught art. Both of them taught me the value of working hard, thinking as an individual and to believe in myself.

What is the most important thing you have learned as a result of your work? That hard work pays off, and to be critical of yourself.

That’s me with Anna Maakestad, my art teacher and a close mentor in high school.

All the right elements combined to create the perfect recipe for a party that I believe will be remembered in years to come.

Alumni revive a tradition Homecoming was marked with a record number of alumni on campus. Over 150 alumni returned to HKIS and enjoyed what has become a tradition. Cookies with the counsellors was overrun by attendees warranting a cookie run to the Wellcome next door, the barbecue lunch had 4 tables full of returning alumni bonding with seniors and their teachers. When school was out, alumni swarmed to the teachers tent reunion where stories and experiences were exchanged with nostalgia. Alumni played a fantastic basketball game but faculty took the trophy this year. Alumni moved on to Soho’s Club 1911 in the evening followed by dinner at Jaspas. In the meantime, a new tradition began when Ed Flanagan ’00 organized a much enjoyed rugby game. In his own words…

Traditionally played as a friendly match to prepare HKIS for overseas tournaments such as the IASUS Sevens, the alumni rugby game was revived this Homecoming after a 3 year hiatus. 16 alumni from as far back as 1997 and 4 faculty members came together on a beautiful January afternoon to win a hard fought game against HKIS A, 42-28. The victory extended the alumni ’ s undefeated record against HKIS to 5-0 and featured a number of excellent individual performances by both alumni and current students.

by Edmund Flanagan ’00

HKIS started off strong against alumni who clearly had not recovered from the New Year ’ s revelries. Alumni survived an early HKIS attack with an inspired goal line defense led by Matt Mosey ’ 01 and Andrew Mulligan ’03. However, a beautiful chip kick by HKIS player, Jun Yung ’ 04 was chased down by Eric Yu ’ 04, who beat Mosey for the score in the left corner. The alumni response was swift as faculty member Luke W imbush made a series of brilliant runs down the field despite losing his prized pink shirt early in the match. A blown lineout by HKIS allowed alumni, Edmund Flanagan ’00 and Justin Kampa ’00 to make two strong runs into HKIS ’22. The alumni push was sustained by Jin Yung ’01 who set up Michael Lamb ’03 for the try. Eager to push the advantage, alumni capitalized on another broken HKIS lineout thanks to another excellent Matt Mosey run into HKIS territory. HKIS made a valiant goal line defense, but soon succumbed to a crushing run by Kerry Lanzit ’00 who stormed in from 5 meters out for the score.

14

Hong Kong International School

HKIS rallied towards the end of the first half with excellent teamwork from their forward pack. A Christopher Shipman ’07 run was exploited with strong mauling by the HKIS pack. Alumni recovered the ball on their goal line, but a dropped pass by Joshua Chan ’01 from Blair Austin ’ 03 was recovered by current HKIS student, Scott Keller ’ 05, for an easy try. The scoring continued into the second half as play was opened up with two outstanding individual runs by HKIS winger Eric Yu ’04 and alumnus Alex Dunoye ’ 01. Both brilliantly evaded tacklers and demonstrated excellent foot speed as they covered 50 meters on their way to the try line.

HKIS would make one final run to close the gap with a gritty try by Andy Steinbach ’ 04, but was eventually overwhelmed by the size and experience of the alumni. Kevin Tse ’97 demonstrated his now legendary aplomb with a boisterous celebration after scoring from 5 meters out and was later joined by brother, Greg ’02, when the elder fed Greg for the score. The game was capped in the final minutes by a Kotaro Yoshida ’ 03 try off a fine feed from faculty member, Laura Cowan, who doubled as referee and the alumni’s scrum-half. HKIS may have lost the game, but the current Dragons demonstrated the cohesiveness and talent level that has been a hallmark of the t e a m ’ s r e c e n t h i s t o r y. W i t h t h e team’s success against the alumni, there is a great deal of optimism a n d h o p e t h a t HKIS w i l l b o u n c e back next season and reclaim the HK Schoolboy ’ s Trophy after a 3 year hiatus from the top. Forty Dragons Dine in New York By Metta Dael ’93

Local Dragons Descend upon Dragon-i

Once again Metta Dael ’93 , organizer extraordinaire planned the annual HKIS New York Reunion. Alumni from MA, CT, NY, and NJ were invited. This time it was at Sorriso’s, an Italian restaurant on Sunday February 8 2004. In her own words…

About 40 HKIS alumni gathered for dinner at Sorriso’s Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village, New York with Jim Handrich, Bill and Jane Wehenberg, and Wil Chan. I hadn’t seen Mr. Chan in over 10 years and although he kept telling me to just call him Wil now, I couldn’t bring myself to do it. There was a huge array of class representatives ranging from Ken Szeto from the first graduating class of 1970 to new MBA student Lyman Doyle ’93 to the most recent graduate Kent Lui from the class of 2002. We took over half the restaurant, as many slurped noodles and reminisced about senior pranks, prom and the Christmas tournament. More of us were amazed

It might have been April Fool’s Day, but it was no joke that HKIS Alumni were out for a wonderful evening of reminiscing at the hip club Dragon-i. Almost 30 alumni descended upon t h e e x c l u s i v e v e n u e where they were joined by HKIS faculty and staff. The Alumni Office hosted the event with Alumni Board president Kenneth Koo ’79. Guests saw a strong turnout from the graduating year of 1988.

at how large the school had gotten as we looked at pictures of the new schools and Bill told us of all the new developments. It was especially interesting to hear about Ken’s experience at HKIS since his graduating class had only 60 students! I think the best part of the evening for me was hearing about how financially solid alumni, staff, and the administration had been keeping the school. What a great way to start the Year of the Monkey! I look forward to seeing them next year and meeting new alumni. If anyone would like to host the New York reunion next year, drop me a line!

Philly provides setting for 2001 alumni by Lauren By Lauren TannerTanner ’01

The class of 2001 had a mini-HKIS reunion in Philadelphia on February 10 th , 2003. Andrea Kean drove out from Penn State (thanks, we know it was a trek) to find Mike McCoy, who currently attends American University, Lauren Tanner who is interning at the Department of State for the quarter, and Alexis Cuddyre, studying at UPenn, holding a prime parking spot for her. The weekend was joined by T homas Bispham (who also attends UPenn) during which everyone had a great time and many mornings were spent at the yummy Philly diner!

Thomas Bispham, Alexis Cuddyre, Andrea Kean, Mike Mccoy and Lauren Tanner.

Boston alumni warm up in Chinatown Miltinnie Yih organized the annual Boston Reunion on Friday, February 6, 2004 at East Ocean Restaurant, in Boston’s Chinatown. Despite the freezing cold, 13 people at dinner had a fun time reminiscing about old times. “I even had one of my students Ed Flanagan'00 there! It was a terrific time, Miltinnie said. Organizer and former HKIS Director of Community and Resource Development Miltinnie Yih (who was a counselor and also taught english for many years at HKIS), head of school Bill Wehrenberg, his wife, Jane and high school principal Jim Handrich met with alumni Jens Buckler ’92, Dana Park ’00, Ed Flanagan ’00, Nicole Pang ’00, Cheryl Mainland ’00, Ivy Chen ’93, her husband, Kam Ota and Yuen Ping Wong ’03.

by Anne Kwok Tang ’74

All six members of the class of ’74 residing in Hong Kong gathered together to celebrate their 30th HKIS Reunion at the Hong Kong Country Club on April 15, 2004. Guest of Honor, Susan Oh, visiting from Sydney won the prizes for “Furthest Traveled” and “Youngest to Retire”. She and husband Jimmy Cheng who also recently retired, now enjoy golf three times a week in beautiful Down Under weather. Mark Kwok is now seriously tempted to retire after hearing about their wonderful retirement lifestyle. Mark and Rose’s son, Gareth ’00 is now studying marketing at Golden Gate University in San Francisco and their daughter, Robyn ’04 will attend School of the Art Institute in Chicago to study animation next fall. Margaret Kwok won the prize for “First to Marry” husband Allan Wong almost 26 years ago. Their son, William runs his own company and daughter Wendy is attending Occidental College. Alison Chow won the most “Technologically Savvy” as she is now in her 9th year running an internet website which focuses on listed company investor relation information serving the global investment community. Walter Loh won the prize for “Youngest Looking”. Did you know he still gets carded? He also was the only one who knew what he wanted to be (a dentist) in high school. Walter and Anne’s daughter Erica is now a 10th grader at HKIS and son Nicholas is in 8th grade.

Top Low L-R: Walter Loh, Suzie Chi, Alison Chow, Mark Kwok. Bottom row L-R: Anne Kwok, Margaret Kwok, Amy Kwan.

Living in Hong Kong since ’96, Amy Kwan and Henry’s daughter Jennifer Chan ’03 is attending Seattle University where she’s enjoying home away from home with aunt Mabel Kwan ’79 and her children Allison 18, Andrea 17, Alexander 15 and Andrew 6. Anne Kwok and husband Martin Tang just celebrated their 25 th anniversary and travel extensively now that they are empty nesters. Their daughter Nicole will graduate from Stanford in 2004 and son Christopher ’03 is at Cornell Hotel School and will be working at the Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong this summer. All bought HKIS Annual Fund Ball raffle tickets and are hoping to be lucky winners and that our reunion will inspire other class ’74 reunions so we can get updated news! By the way, did you notice that four HKIS class ’74 alumni produced 6 HKIS students!

(we run the offices, meetings, tradeshows, functions, etc. for several non-profit business organizations). I would love to hear from HKIS people. I especially want to reconnect with Mar y Jane Patter son, my best friend in high school. Aloha all!

Rober ta Cullen: I moved back to Honolulu after HKIS in 1970 (wow, that was a long time ago!). I finished my senior year at Punahou School and went off to college. I spent two years at Indiana University and two years at UCLA where I got a degree in anthropology and met the man of my dreams. Jim Cullen and I got married in Honolulu and decided to stay and work here. 28 years later, an MBA and 1 career change (I was with Matson Navigation Company for 16 years), I am the proud partner in an Association Management Company

Cindy DAVIS Gersony: is currently living in Great Falls, VA. She attended HKIS from grade 8 to high school. She went on to get a BA from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and MA from George Washington University. Cindy is now working in international humanitarian relief. Debr a Oakes: My sister Pam graduated in 1973 in Japan. She graduated from college suma cum laude and has a ver y successful career with the Department of Defense and holds a very high position. She is currently consolidating the 4 branches of the militar y pay system. My younger sister Candice Evans also attended HKIS. Candy (nickname) was an excellent athlete. She still holds sprint records and basket ball high points records in the metro area of Kansas City. She attended Central Missouri State to earn her bachelor’s and masters degrees in physical education. I, on the other hand, am quite nerdy. I develop software applications and I am a DBA for DST (one of our offices is in Hong Kong).

Mary Kelly: First, our mom, Mary Parr, who was the band teacher died in September 1997 of cancer. A number of people at the Reunion of the Century in HK remembered her fondly, which made her very happy. On the Parr front, our family left HK in 1970, for Virginia. Ross Parr ’80 still looks very much as he did in the fullpage photo on page 93 of the 1968 Orientale — when he was 6 years old. He graduated from the Florida Institute of Technology and spent some time as a professional diver. Marion Par r ’76 graduated from International School Bangkok 1976 and then the University of Michigan where she met and subsequently married Scott Carr. They have lived in Palo Alto for a number of years. They have a15 year old daughter, Jessie. Devon ’70 graduated from Michigan State in 1974 and subsequently completed a masters in library science. She is the head librarian at the historic Hamden branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore. She is married to Matthew Ellis, a plumber and very talented gamer and they have one child, Joseph Conrad Ellis, who turned 10 in January 2004. Mary ’72 graduated from the University of Virginia and then worked for the US government for a number of years in Bangkok (DEA) and the Philippines (State) and elsewhere. When that got a bit too bureaucratic, she left and went to Johns Hopkins where she completed her MBA in 2000. While doing that, she met Richard Kelly and their marriage in 1996 put a (temporary) end to Mary’s plans to work further overseas. In 2002, the Kellys adopted the most beautiful child in the world (see photos), Neal Watson Gumpol Kelly, born in Thailand. He spends lots of time playing with the Cindy Davis Gersony & Bob Gersony triplets, Laura, Lizzie and Gregg, who are just six months older than he — and

live a mile away. We completed the US paperwork for a brother for Neal in June of 2003 but are stalled waiting for a final letter from the Gover nment of Thailand, before which that adoption can proceed. If anyone has any connections with the GOT, please send us an email.

He says “I lived in Hong Kong for one short year of my life (’69-’70). Moving from my bir th countr y, India to the thriving metropolis of HK was unforgettable and I loved it. Entering HKIS in the 8 th grade, I soon found myself running around with fellow classmate Taco Proper. Who could forget that name? I had a super year. I moved on to Canada and then to Paramaribo, Suriname in South America. After high school I attended college in Alber ta and Tennessee, marr ied Cindy, and spent 21 years in Paramaribo as a missionary. In ’99 I looked up Taco on the HKIS website and found him right away. I excitedly typed him an e-mail… my long lost friend! His reply bamboozled me. Yes, he had attended HKIS, but didn’t remember me. We decided to get together anyway and see if it would all come back to us. In 2003 on one hot day in Georgia, we rendezvoused just off of I-75 at a fast food restaurant. We had a super time and yes, it did start to come back. Just this week he stopped by my house in Bradenton, Florida and we had a miniature HKIS reunion around some home-cooking. It doesn’t get any better than that. We plan to get together whenever our paths cross. As for me, I have 4 kids, all of whom are quite musical. We are moving to Mango, Florida (next to Tampa) and will continue our missionary work from there.”

“I would like to hear from HKIS friends. I have kept in touch with a few people over the years. It’s been 25 years since Hong Kong. However when I am fortunate enough to speak with an acquaintance HKIS, it seems like time has been standing still. Kevin Fisher, Kerry Fogarty and I were best friends in High School. Kerr y has passed away, however Kevin and I remember him regularly in conversations of growing up. Kerry, Kevin, and I kept in touch through college and into our 30’s when Kerry passed away, we miss him very much.

I am going to track down some of our old school mates. We need to get something going like a Cruise Ship reunion out of Miami. I’m am looking forward to hearing from our old Hong Kong friends.” Ken Flynn: I am still in Charlotte, North Carolina, with my wife Mary and four children. I was lucky enough to have several friends and family Me crossing the finish show up to cheer line (note: we started me on, and even 30 mins before the clock did). more who called, emailed, and just plain supported me throughout the training and the actual event. gray” for the ever present cloud cover and lack of sunshine. Historically and culturally, Berlin was a fascinating place (not to mention the excellent German beer !) but I could never get used to the weather after beautiful Hong Kong. In 1977, my sister and I moved back to our native California and attended an all-girls-Catholicboarding school in San Anselmo until graduating in 1980— by the skin of my teeth! I hopped around during my college years, one year at U.C. Santa Barbara, two years at U.C. Davis and one and a half years at California State University, Sacramento. I married in 1988, had two fabulous children, Chelsea 13, and Will 10 and divorced. I found and married my soulmate three years ago and we are now a mixed-name family of Wild, Ury and Lagomarsino! For the past 4I years I have worked as a sales executive selling advertising in Association Publications for a Canadian Publisher, Naylor Publications. I think often of my HKIS buddys, but other than an amazing encounter with Jon Potter in 1983 at a Grateful Dead Concert in Berkeley, and a brief visit with Rochelle Roades in 1983, I haven’t heard from or seen anyone. It was great to discover the website for HKIS. I spent an hour reading the first issue of Dragon Tales on-line and giggled at photos of past teachers, Mr. Rohrs, Mr. Landdeck— who have aged rather gracefully. Then I happened upon a photo of Mr. Voeltz (that sweetheart of a teacher who nicknamed me the “Pitts” one day at school after I ripped the entire underarm seam of a sweatshirt I was wearing!)and had a great bellylaugh—let’s just say he’s looking rather gray! Tee Hee, just kidding Mr. Voeltz! It was great to read the entries from past alumni who caught me up with some old classmates (I have been wondering where Mike McCor mick landed) and see the photos - Simon Lau- what happened to that beautiful, full hair?! I plan on attending the All Class Reunion next summer in San Francisco— I hope many of you will also be there! Come visit me in California!”

HKIS between 1982 to 1991. My father Walt taught chemistry at HKIS and was the chairman of the high school science department for part of that time. Dear High School Counselor: Each year you send students off to college and, in some cases, never hear from them or anyone at their college. Often that means everything turned out fine. Still, I suspect you are curious about how your former students have fared. To satisfy that curiosity and share good news of academic achievement, I a m w r i t i n g t o yo u about Payal Rajpal ’98, a student you sent our way a few years ago. Payal has just graduated from Reed College with a Bachelor of Ar ts degree in economics. Payal wrote a thesis (which represents original in-depth work in her major) entitled Determinants of Migration in a Little Village in India: 1942-1977. Every thesis ever written by a Reed graduate resides in a bound copy in the thesis tower of Reed’s Hauser Library. If you are ever in Portland and have occasion to stop by our campus, I invite you to look up Payal’s thesis in our library. On behalf of the admission office as well as the larger Reed community, I want to thank you for sending fine students like Payal to Reed. We appreciate your suppor t of our distinctive brand of education. Best wishes for an enjoyable and rewarding summer. Sincerely, Paul Marthers (signed) Dean of Admission Joseph W. It has been an adjustment coming back here as a teacher (instead of as a student), but I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying every moment. Since the inter nship program is a one year program, I have already begun to wonder where my travels will take me next. Dave Kohl: Dear One and All… I am enjoying my third school year of retirement. My time has gone into the Mug Man business; volunteering at the Portland Chinese Garden; working a lot in my own yard; and managing a house-hold of five renters and myself. The pottery business goes well. I threw about 4 tons of clay last year. I did 300 bowls for a local fund - raiser for a foodbank and got a nice full page article written about me in the Vancouver Columbian. I did a baptismal font for a local Catholic parish, several sets of communion software, and have been playing around with bonsai and ikebana wares. I also did some claywork for my own yard. My only trip outside Oregon this year was to California for 2 weeks in early June. I had a very good time connecting with friends from high school, Hong Kong and college. I spent time in LA, Palm Deser t, Sacramento and San Francisco where a group of HKIS alumni and I planned

our next HKIS reunion, which will be July 2-5, 2004 in the City by the Bay.

following my ordination on September 5, 2004.

In late June there was a great gathering to celebrate Paul Tuchardt’s retirement from the ministry. In and amongst the largest gathering were about 25 Hong Kong survivors from several states. We had 2 great services, formed an amazing ad hoc choir and feasted and laughed many hours.

For any of my former colleagues or former students that might be in the area on September 5, I would like to extend an invitation for them to join with me in these celebrations. May God continue to Bless HKIS! We have 6 years of memories that we will never forget. God be with you all!!

Bob and Ann Rupprecht : As a former instructor at HKIS (1967-1973) I was impressed with the website. HKIS has come into its own since we first opened the school in ’67. Since Ann and I left Hong Kong in ’73, we lived in Grand Island, Nebraska, teaching for 21 years at the parochial school. In 1994 I turned to working with insurance for AAL for 7 years. In 2001 we relocated to St. Louis for my 2 years’ preparation at Concordia Seminary to enter the Office of the Ministry. I am currently in my convertible vicarage year at St. John Lutheran Church of Hollywood, New Germany, Minnesota. I have been extended a call by the congregation to remain as their pastor

In Memory Chad Saxelid ’85: I really wish that I had some happy news to share with my former classmates, but I don’t. Rosemarie Saxelid, my beloved wife of almost thirteen years, died on September 24th, 2003 from liver failure, she was 44. Needless to say, both my son and I are still coping with the shock of this sudden and completely unexpected loss.
