Message from the Head of School It is my privilege to present to you this Report of Giving 2012, highlighting the many contributions the HKIS Community made in the 2011-2012 school year. In 2011-2012, records were broken as Parents, Alumni, Faculty and Staff, and Friends gave nearly HK$12,000,000 to our school. I extend my sincerest thanks to our supporters for their generosity and dedication. In this Report, we acknowledge the many individuals who collectively made a tremendous difference through their philanthropy to our school. Also inside, you will find facts and figures about our students, faculty and staff; the school’s finances, and the many contributions made by the HKIS Community to the Annual Fund and other organizations. Like independent schools in the United States and around the world, HKIS relies on many income sources, including tuition and fees payments, Annual Fund contributions and endowment interest income, in order to operate with a balanced budget while providing the exceptional education we all expect from HKIS. Our generous donors provide us with the means to attract and retain the finest teachers, develop and expand academic and co-curricular programs, and maintain and enhance school infrastructure. Visits by inspiring speakers such as HKIS founder Mel Kieschnick, author Chang-rae Lee and educator Sugata Mitra are made possible by The Charles W. Dull Visiting Scholar Series. HKIS students receive seed money for service projects through The James A. Handrich Service Leadership Endowment. The Alumni Scholarship in Memory of David F. Rittman makes an HKIS education possible for local high students. These are just a few ways the Annual Fund lifts HKIS above and beyond what tuition alone can provide.

We remain committed to providing only the best for our students. Guiding us always are our Mission and Student Learning Results (Academic Excellence, Spirituality, Character Development, Self-Motivated Learning, Contributing to Society, and Chinese Culture). In everything we do, in every opportunity we encounter, and in every challenge we face, these remain our compass. To all who supported the Annual Fund, I extend my deepest gratitude and admiration. Your generosity benefits every student today, and for years to come. I look forward to working with you all for the continued success of HKIS in the 2012-2013 academic year and into the future. Sincerely,
Kevin M. Dunning Head of School

Message from the Chair of the Board of Managers On behalf of the Hong Kong International School Board of Managers, I am delighted to share with you this Report of Giving, highlighting the many achievements of the 2011-2012 school year. In this Report, you will find information about our student body, our faculty and staff, the 2012 Dinner Dance, and the operations and finances of the Annual Fund. Most importantly, the Report acknowledges the many individual parents, alumni, faculty and staff, and friends who donated to the 2011-2012 Annual Fund. Together, these donors contributed nearly HK$12,000,000 to HKIS – the highest amount raised since the Annual Fund’s inception in 2000. This support serves as a resounding endorsement of our school’s Mission and Student Learning Results. Also in this Report, you will find reports from the Parent Faculty Organization, the Booster Club and the HKIS Alumni Association. The volunteers who fuel these organizations are deserving of our thanks for all they do for our school. In addition, we take a moment to highlight some of the service work done by our students – from our youngest learners in Lower Primary on through to graduating seniors. The Annual Fund provides a major source of funding, enabling the school to provide a great many resources and programs that are not covered by tuition fees. Musical instruments, sports equipment, classroom technology, visiting scholars, funding for service projects, scholarships… these are just a few examples of ways the Annual Fund lifts HKIS above and beyond, all while keeping tuition increases as minimal as possible. And, because the actual cost of educating a student exceeds the cost of our tuition and fees, every HKIS student receives financial assistance from the Annual Fund. Gifts to the Annual Fund contribute to the successful accomplishment of our school’s Mission and Student Learning Results. My fellow Board members and I are immensely grateful for your support and engagement. We look forward to working together in the coming year to ensure our school and our students reach the highest possible heights.

Faculty and Staff Demographics 2011/12 A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. – Henry Adams (1838-1918), American historian, journalist, and novelist
Hong Kong is home to families from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. Not surprisingly, HKIS attracts faculty and staff from around the world. The diverse backgrounds of both our faculty members and students allow for a convergence of a multitude of cultures, underscoring our mission to dedicate our lives to global understanding. HKIS is blessed to be able to retain long-standing faculty members – 39 per cent of faculty have been with HKIS for at least six years, and 24 per cent have been with us for 11 years or more. The loyalty and commitment of our faculty members enable them to nurture strong bonds with our students and their parents. Since HKIS offers an American-style education, the majority (54 per cent) of faculty members are from the United States. Faculty members from Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, China and elsewhere add to the cultural diversity characteristic of HKIS. We congratulate the following faculty members, who gained advanced qualifications during the 2011-2012 school year: Katie Flowers Jenni Newcombe Leah Shy Wilson Christopher Taylor Sunny Yang

Message from Advancement Office On behalf of the Annual Fund, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for making 2011-2012 a record-breaking year. Thanks to the generosity of parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends, we raised $11,815,950 for our school – far exceeding the amount raised in any year since the Annual Fund’s inception in 2000. Each donation represents an expression of support for our school’s Mission and Student Learning Results, and for this we are extremely grateful. It is due to the philanthropy and commitment of our donors that we are able to attract and retain the finest teachers, develop and expand academic and co-curricular programs, and maintain and enhance school infrastructure – all while keeping school tuition increases as minimal as possible. And, because the actual cost of educating a student exceeds the cost of our tuition and fees, every student receives financial assistance from the Annual Fund. In addition to channeling 80 percent of proceeds to the operating budget and 20 percent to the school’s endowment, this year the Annual Fund brought three distinguished speakers to HKIS as part of The Charles W. Dull Visiting Scholar Series. In October, HKIS Founder Dr. Mel Kieschnick spoke to faculty about the school’s founding, its history as well as how our current Mission and Student Learning Results continue to drive the school towards excellence in education. In March, Dr. Sugata Mitra shared findings from his “Hole in the Wall Experiments” with faculty, students and parents. And later that month renowned novelist and Princeton University Professor Chang-rae Lee spoke to the HKIS Community about his personal journey as a writer. The James A. Handrich Service Leadership Endowment grants awards to HKIS students to fund senior service projects. Supported entirely by the Annual Fund, it is a wonderful example of your philanthropy encouraging service. This year, over HK$35,000 in grant money was awarded to support the following student service projects: • Energy Generating Bicycle
Jennifer Ho, Tara Lorimer & Jack Pong
• Service in Cambodia
Ellen Koo, Annie So & Jonathan Vuylsteke
• Rugby for Refugees
Alec Diao
• Education in Malpscua
Grace Caywood & Hannah Passamonte
• Help 2 Help Jacqueline Chau, John Hare, Evan Lo & Christy Wong Over the years, seven HKIS graduates have benefited from The Alumni Scholarship in Memory of David F. Rittman which provides full-tuition for merit and need based recipients beginning in Grade 10. Without this funding, an HKIS education would be inaccessible to these students. The Annual Fund helps keep our student body diverse through the Rittman Scholarship and by keeping tuition fee increases at a minimum for all students.

The event was a great success and promises to be become an annual favorite! The 2012 HKIS Dinner Dance raised an unprecedented HK$3,700,000 for the Annual Fund. It was a terrific night full of fun and friendship. What a wonderful way for our community to celebrate the HKIS experience! Again, our sincere thanks to you all for making 2011-2012 a truly exceptional year! We look forward to striving to new heights together in the 2012-2013 academic year.

HKIS Annual Fund
Frequently Asked Questions What is the HKIS Annual Fund? The HKIS Annual Fund is the school’s annual fundraising initiative. 80 per cent of the dollars raised go directly to the school’s current-year operating budget, which supports academic and extra-curricular programs and activities, maintains and equips state-of-the-art infrastructure, and retains and attracts the best teachers. The Annual Fund supports programs that would not be possible on tuition income alone. The remaining 20 per cent of the Annual Fund is allocated to the school’s endowment fund.
Why does HKIS ask for donations? HKIS is a non-profit school that follows a traditional United States independent school model of setting tuition at less than the full educational cost and bridging the difference through donations to the school. Tuition income and fees make up the yearly academic operating income. However, this income does not completely cover expenses of the academic operation (e.g. employee compensation, educational materials, student supplies). Donations not only help bridge the gap, but also help keep tuition fee increases at a minimum while allowing HKIS to operate with a balanced budget.
How does HKIS spend its academic operations income each year? Approximately 75-80 per cent of academic operations income goes towards salaries, benefits and accommodation for our faculty and staff. The remaining 20-25 per cent goes towards educational materials, supplies, utilities, facilities maintenance and other items. As noted, tuition fees do not cover the full cost of education at HKIS.
What is an endowment? A school’s endowment is its savings account. A large, well invested endowment
28
means a school is guaranteed another source of income beyond tuition and annual gifts. Such an endowment provides long-term stability for a school, ensuring that it has the resources to plan and develop for the future. HKIS relies on interest income from the endowment as a key component of the operating budget.
Who gives to the Annual Fund? Each year, parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, corporations and friends make gifts to the Annual Fund. HKIS hopes that all HKIS families will make the school one of their highest philanthropic priorities, particularly while they have children attending the school.
If we have an Annual Fund, why does HKIS need to increase tuition fees? Tuition fee increases are necessary to support new/expanded programs, to facilitate student learning and to offset the impact of general inflation. The Annual Fund helps keep tuition increases as low as possible while maintaining a high level of excellence for our students. Every student receives a substantial subsidy from the Annual Fund.
How long has the HKIS Annual Fund been in existence and how much has it raised? The Annual Fund has been in existence since 2000, and over this period over HK$105 million has been raised for our student programs.
Which programs and activities have been supported by the Annual Fund? The Annual Fund primarily supports each student’s interaction with HKIS’ Student Learning Results: Academic Excellence, Spirituality, Character Development, Self-Motivated Learning, Contributing to Society, and Chinese
Culture. With 80 per cent of the proceeds going directly to the school’s currentyear operating budget, the fund helps to support academic and extra-curricular activities, maintain and equip state-of-theart infrastructure, and retain and attract the best teachers. In addition, the Fund has supported many areas of school programs and activities over the years, including: • Instrumental music programs • Alumni Scholarship in memory of David F. Rittmann • Charles W. Dull Visiting Scholar Series • James A. Handrich Service Leadership Endowment • Supplementary writing coaches • Project-based learning technology classrooms • Service to the community • Student Services – special needs • Tai Tam field enhancements • Summer Programs for gifted local students
How and when can I give? HKIS welcomes gifts at any time. Donations can be made by cash, check or credit card in HK or US dollars. Credit card donations may be made on our secure online website (www.hkis.edu.hk). Checks should be made payable to ‘HKIS Annual Fund’. You may make a pledge anytime during the year and pay your pledge by July 31.
I am a United States taxpayer: can I get US tax benefits for my gift? Yes. Please make your check payable to ‘Friends of Hong Kong Charities Inc.’ and ensure that nothing is written in the lower left-hand corner of the check. You must be a US citizen or resident and your check should be for HK$800 (approximately US$100) or more. You may donate with either a HKD or USD check. Each quarter, the Friends of Hong Kong Charities Inc. issues receipts that support tax deductions in both Hong Kong and the US. You may also give online at www.fohkc.com.
How much should I/we give? No gift is too small, and no gift is too large! Gifts of all amounts are gratefully received and appreciated. Donations to the Annual Fund have ranged anywhere from HK$10
to over HK$1 million; any amount you donate will be beneficial to our students. Just as important is your participation in the Annual Fund efforts. A high level of participation demonstrates community support for our school.
Where can I send in my gift? Please send your gift to the following address: Advancement Hong Kong International School 1 Red Hill Road Tai Tam Hong Kong
How is my gift recognized? Can my gift be “anonymous”? Each year the school publishes the Report of Giving, which highlights all our Annual Fund donors. Your name will be listed in the appropriate gift level category (your specific gift amount will not be listed). Yes, your gift can be made anonymously if you desire.
Can I designate my gift to a specific Student Learning Result? Yes, you may designate your gift to a specific SLR. Please complete the Annual Fund donation form specifying your choice. However, note that an unrestricted gift gives the school the greatest flexibility in directing gifts to the school’s areas of greatest need.
Does HKIS accept matching gifts? Yes, HKIS does accept matching gifts. Please complete the necessary matching gift forms from your company/organization and submit them to HKIS Advancement. To ensure the matching gifts are fully and properly processed, please contact Advancement prior to completing and submitting your forms for further information – they can be reached via 3149-7820 or at advancement@hkis.edu.hk
Who can I contact for more information on the Annual Fund? Please contact Advancement at 3149-7820 or advancement@hkis.edu.hk Their offices are located on the seventh floor of Middle School, Tai Tam, Hong Kong.

The success of an exceptional learning community is based on the individual contributions of many, and at Hong Kong International School service and giving are integral parts of the educational experience. Contributing to society is a key learning for HKIS students and the true value of service is reflected to others, exposing parents, alumni and friends to the good works that take place. It is through such involvement that the school’s Mission of “dedicating our minds to inquiry, our hearts to compassion, and our lives to service and global understanding” comes alive. When individuals become involved, giving and service become examples for our children and the next generation. The academic, service, and experiential opportunities provided to HKIS students rely on the generosity and broad support of the greater HKIS community. Exceptional learning requires exceptional support. The right mix of experienced and multi-national faculty, unrivaled facilities, and outstanding opportunities for our students all depend on generous financial foundations: the cost of educating our children is not covered by tuition fees alone. Such community investment provides additional resources to make HKIS a truly unique place. There are many opportunities for personal involvement at HKIS, but the most important first step is getting involved.
Parents $8,818,425

The natural place to begin is with your personal interests and passions. The natural result will be the satisfaction of knowing that you helped make our learning community a better place for those here today, and those to come in the future. Gifts to the Annual Fund lift our children’s educational experience from excellent to exceptional.

Contributing to Society Through the Contributing to Society Student Learning Result students develop the skills they need to form genuine relationships in our diverse society and to make contributions to our community. Following are just a few examples of the ways HKIS students are making a difference in the lives of others:
Lower Primary Heifer Read to Feed is the Lower Primary’s largest service-learning project and an excellent way to introduce children to the importance of giving to others while also reinforcing literacy skills. Eighty-percent of our youngest students participated by reading over 14,290 books, thereby raising HK$371,385 exceeding the target of HK$250,000. Proceeds were used to purchase 282 flocks of chickens, 10 cows, 64 pigs and 74 goats for families in China. For its exceptional efforts, HKIS’s Lower Primary was awarded the 2011-12 Heifer Read-to-Feed Interschool Highest Fundraising Award.
Upper Primary On the first anniversary of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami which devastated Japan, the HKIS G5 Band and the Hong Kong Japanese School Band performed in a charity concert in the Upper Primary Gym. Proceeds exceeded HK$120,000 and were donated to Ashinaga, a Japanese organization dedicated to the long-term support of children affected by the earthquake, and the Red Cross. Throughout the school year, Upper Primary offers Free Dress Days, during which students donate money for the privilege. Proceeds of Free Dress Days were close to HK$52,000 and benefited Operation Santa Claus, which in turn distributed funds to over 120 worthy charities throughout Hong Kong.
Middle School The Matrix Club The Matrix Club is an after school activity program that seeks to develop compassion and humanism in students by providing them with opportunities to get involved in service activities. The goal is not fundraising but in personal experience through engagement. Students nurture leadership and critical thinking skills while building a more peaceful and just world. Every year the Matrix Club students select specific projects to achieve this objective. Last year, students organized the Saturday School for Refugee Children living in Hong Kong. Refugee children visited the Middle School on two Saturdays a month throughout the year. During their five-hour visit each day, the Matrix Club students taught their guests various academic subjects and conducted non-formal educational activities. Our students also engaged the parents of these children, in IT and English conversational activities. Over the year, the Matrix Club collected about HK$ 25,000 through various fundraising activities, which was spent largely in conveyance for our guests and in providing food for them. The year ended in a very meaningful event, ‘The Saturday School
32
Showcase For Parents’, during which a video was shown to parents of the Matrix Club students that captured the sights and sounds of Saturday School through the year. The video was followed by some of our students sharing their experiences, how they have begun to understand their social responsibilities and how they have grown to be better people from the process.
High School Interact Charity Fashion Show “Solstice” in April, 2012 raised over HK$400,000 for the girls’ scholarship fund, run by the Concordia Welfare and Education Foundation which was initiated by HKIS students Brian Li, Mercedes Chien, and Gary Chan as their Senior Project in 2007. Jennifer Wu ’08, who took this cause on as her Senior Project in 2008 has recently started a new club with CWEF called “Ember”, which is raising funds in a number of Hong Kong schools on behalf of the girls. Operating in Guangdong Province, the program allows hundreds of girls in the Jiangmen and Deqing areas to continue their studies and keep their dreams alive. Above all, every scholarship recipient is motivated by the hope that their education will enable them to support their parents and other families members in the future. Interact has also donated HK$30,000 to Concordia Welfare and Education Foundation in Cambodia to enable three students in the Cambodian village of Kranglovear to complete their college degrees.
Schoolwide On April 19th, 102 students, faculty and staff, and parents shaved their heads to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. By shaving their heads, participants show solidarity with children who often lose their hair during cancer treatment. An astonishing HK$1,752,058 was raised for childhood cancer research. 2012 was the seventh year the HKIS community supported the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. HKIS placed #16 out of the 1,227 St. Baldrick’s events worldwide.

Parent Faculty Organization The Parent Faculty Organization (PFO) is a group of parent, faculty and staff volunteers from all divisions within HKIS. The PFO hosts many events and programs throughout the year, all with the aim of supporting the HKIS community. Along the way, the PFO raises funds to support the HKIS Student Learning Results (SLRs) by hosting two major events: the Pumpkin Festival in October and the World’s Fair in April. Additionally, the PFO generates funds through the sale of calendars, directories, Chinese New Year shirts, and books at Book Fairs. All in all, the PFO contributed over HK$600,000 to the HKIS Community in 2011-2012. The elected members of the PFO in 2011-12 were: President Past Officer Secretary Treasurer

The PFO’s mission is: • To support HKIS in its efforts to provide quality education • To build a sense of community among students, parents and HKIS faculty • To provide a forum for the expression of views and ideas that are schoolwide both in concern and interest to HKIS stakeholders. Views and ideas for the particular divisions are expressed through the Parent Advisory Groups. • To foster communication between school and home. • To raise funds that support education at HKIS and the SLRs. In 2011-12, the PFO’s contributions to HKIS were as follows: • HK$25,000 for the Chinese New Year Staff Dinner • HK$50,000 to each of the four Divisions to support the SLRs • HK$55,000 for the school-wide Made in China art exhibition • HK$96,000 in Merit Scholarships. Eight merit scholarships were awarded – four to graduating seniors and four to rising seniors. • Teacher Appreciation Week is dedicated to letting our teachers know how much we value their work. The PFO placed special treats in the teachers’ mailboxes every day during the first week of May. The week culminated in a huge lunch feast on Friday. • Offered opportunities for Middle School and High School students to volunteer at PFO events and earn money for their clubs/class/team etc. • Funded school-wide assemblies at Chinese New Year. • Provided snacks and drinks at all five Back-to-School nights • Hosted Parent-to-Parent, a popular breakfast event in August for all new parents, providing them with the A-to-Z of everything they needed to know about Hong Kong and HKIS The PFO works hard for HKIS, and we are extremely proud of our efforts and our successes in the community. Booster Club The HKIS Booster Club is a non-profit parent volunteer organization that is in the business of spreading the school’s ‘Dragon Spirit’. The Club does this by: • Hosting monthly spirit activities in the Middle and High School and special events in the Upper and Lower Primary Schools. • Organizing and hosting Sports Banquets that celebrate our Middle and High School athletes and helping with hospitality for tournaments – both athletic and academic – and arts events such as choir festivals. • Allocating all profits generated by the Club’s operation of the Dragon Shop to HKIS clubs, groups, organizations, divisions, and departments that meet the Club’s funding requirements.

Highlights We organized and funded the three annual Sports Banquets that celebrate and bring together our Middle School and High School athletes, their parents and coaches. This year we were pleased to be able to have the participation of the High School Jazz Band, the Faculty Jazz Band, and the Madrigal Singers, all of whom provided wonderful musical entertainment during the banquets. With the help of parents who manned tables and baked delicious treats, the Booster Club supported spirit events in the High School and Middle School as well as Upper Primary’s ‘Pink Day.’ Thanks to volunteers, we provided oranges and water to Lower Primary and Upper Primary students for Field Days in Tai Tam. We have popped thousands of bags of popcorn and organized hospitality for various HKIS-hosted tournaments, including non-athletic tournaments like APAC Orchestra. We supported the school mascot, Torch, and maybe most importantly, we keep the candy jar in the Dragon Shop full!
Acknowledgements We wish to thank the 56 Volunteer Dragon Ladies and one Dragon Dad who staff the Dragon Shop Monday to Friday, some Saturdays, and during schoolwide events. Their hard work has allowed The Booster Club to flourish and do what it does. We always welcome volunteers – come work a shift in the Dragon Shop, throw candy at a pep rally, or pop popcorn – there are many different ways to get involved. We would like to also thank the parents and students for their ongoing support and patronage of the Dragon Shop. We are very proud to be part of the HKIS community. Alumni Association The HKIS Alumni Association is a lifetime resource, serving students long after they have left our school. A key mission is to forge closer relationships between HKIS alumni and the school. One of the ways we accomplish this is by engaging alumni in a dialogue about being both an asset and resource to HKIS. We aim to increase alumni participation in events in Hong Kong and around the world, and to encourage more alumni to give back to the school. The goals and objectives of the Association are: • To create the HKIS Alumni Tradition. • To develop a world-class Alumni Resource Network. • For HKIS, its students and fellow alumni, to enable both the school and fellow alumni to tap into this Network for career counseling, mentoring, job referrals, internships, classroom help, and speaking to younger students on spirituality, morals and values. • To promote a positive attitude towards alumni. • To share our experience and enable the school to trace the development of the HKIS student body over the years. • To enable alumni to serve as an extension of HKIS’s charitable community activities by working together and volunteering. • To be a valuable resource to HKIS parents.
