Skills for Work Level 1

A one year foundation level course which will support you in developing the skills required for further study in your chosen vocational area.

The course is very practical with lots of opportunities to develop your skills in a practical environment. There are a variety of external visits which form part of your study programme, and you will be appointed a personal tutor for the duration of the course. You will experience practical tasters of subjects within the land-based sector as well as being supported in developing the skills for paid or voluntary work. Based at our Walford Campus, you will study a range of land-based subjects such as; animal care, agriculture and horticulture as well as workready units such as; word processing, CV writing and positive attitudes and behaviours at work.

Qualification OCN Diploma in Living Independently at Level 1

Duration One year

Course Content Topics you will cover include: • Carry Out a Practical Activity • Health & Safety in the Workplace • Positive Attitudes & Behaviours at Work • Everyday Food & Drink Preparation • Maintenance of Grass Surfaces • Using Social Media

Both skills and knowledge are assessed throughout the year by the completion of assignments. You will also complete a two week block of work experience during the course of the year.

Progression Progression routes shown are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria.

Study options may include: • A Level 1 in a chosen Vocational Area or employment

Employment options may include: • Paid or voluntary work in a vocational area you are interested in • Paid/voluntary work in a pet shop or similar • Paid or voluntary work in the land-based sector (garden centre, pet shop, farm etc)

Course Costs There may be optional trips relating to a unit within the course – letters will be sent out at least three weeks prior to the trip informing you of any related costs. There will be fees for safety clothing required for practical activities within the land-based areas. Further information about this can be requested from a member of the teaching team or will be sent out with your confirmation letter once you have had an interview. There are various bursaries available to support eligible students with course-related costs and you can find out more about these on page 14.

Material Fees There is a £100 material fee cost for this course.
