GETTING STARTED Where do you want to study? To help you find what you are looking for, courses are listed alphabetically in table format and split into the Hereford Campus and the Holme Lacy Campus. What type of course do you want to study? This guide covers a wide range of subjects and study options. To help you find what you are looking for we have categorised them into two options. Option 1 – Leisure Courses I hope you will enjoy browsing this prospectus to discover the wide range of part-time courses available locally for you, at our Hereford City and Holme Lacy campuses. Thousands of people from Herefordshire, and much further afield, choose to learn at HLC. Many wish to achieve qualifications to develop their career prospects; others want to learn for pleasure and to develop friendships. Course costs vary because they do not all receive government subsidies; some are fully funded by students and/or their employers. We work hard, however, to provide you with an excellent choice of affordable and accessible programmes. Whilst all of the courses in this prospectus are planned to go ahead as described, some courses listed may experience delayed start dates, amended content or delivery styles and could be cancelled if required, due to the ongoing pandemic. Whatever decision is made, it will be in line with government guidance and advice at the time. The College is implementing assorted processes and procedures to ensure the safety and welfare of both students and staff throughout this time.

We offer many low-cost short leisure courses for adults (19 years and above at the start of the course). These courses are perfect for sampling a new subject or continuing with a hobby you enjoy. Courses are frequently added throughout the year with varying start dates, making them really flexible. With the majority of courses being low-cost they are perfect for dipping into and a great way to meet new people. To help you find these types of courses we’ve added this logo so you can easily spot them in this course guide. Option 2 – Professional Skills & Training We offer a wide variety of professional courses in a wealth of subject areas. Part-time students come to HLC with a variety of motivations to study; retraining for a change in career, looking to progress in the workplace or maybe setting up a business. From professional creative sewing courses and construction industry qualifications to management training and counselling, there are many opportunities for you to study for your next step. MONEY MATTERS Course costs vary depending on individual circumstances. Some courses receive no government subsidy whereas others are partially or, in some cases, fully subsidised.

How Much Is My Course? When you are offered a place on a course, this is conditional upon payment of the appropriate fee at enrolment. Fees have been included alongside the relevant courses to act as a guide when choosing your course. Not all fees are available at the time of print and some may be subject to change or may exclude material and exam fees. For these reasons we strongly advise that you find out the relevant costs before you enrol. Contact T: 0800 032 1986 E: enquiries@hlcollege.ac.uk If you wish to undertake a course which is funded by the government, and you are under 19 years old on September 1st 2020, you will not have to pay tuition or exam fees, although other fees for example, covering professional fees, materials, necessary equipment and trips may still apply.

Fee Reductions for Adults Adults (aged 19 years or over) undertaking courses funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency may be entitled to reduced course fees if they meet the following criteria: ► Adults (aged 19 to 23 years) wishing to study at: • Level 2 who do not have a first full Level 2 qualification (i.e. do

not have 5 GCSEs at grades 4–9 (grades A*–C), an NVQ at Level 2 or an equivalent qualification); or • Level 3 who do not have a first full Level 3 qualification (i.e. do not have 2 or more A-Level passes or 4 or fewer AS Level qualifications, an NVQ at Level 3 or equivalent will be exempt from tuition fees, although other fees covering examinations, certification and materials may still apply ► Adults undertaking English or Maths basic skills, including GCSE level if the student has not previously attained a grade 4 (grade C), will be exempt from tuition and exam fees ► Adults who are in receipt of certain means-tested benefits (Job Seekers Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance in the Work-related Activity Group) may be entitled to apply for a reduction in fees ► Recipients of Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, Working Tax Credit, Pension Credit, Contribution-based ESA, DLA, Tax Award Notice or the new Universal Credit who are unemployed and wish to train in order to find work, may also be entitled to apply for a reduction in fees Valid documentary evidence of any qualifying benefits received must be provided in order for fee reduction to be allowed. Advanced Learner Loan Advanced Learner Loans provide financial support for those aged 19 years and above to access some advanced (Level 3) and higher (Level 4) further education courses. These loans operate in a similar manner to those available in higher education for tuition costs, and are managed by the Student Loans Company. This means that rather than an individual having to pay for their course upfront they have the option of accessing an advanced student loan. Students can apply from 1st April 2020 for courses starting on or after 1st August 2020. It’s easy to apply, household income is not taken into account and there is no credit check. Students will not have to pay anything back until they finish their course and their income is over £26,575 a year. Finance for University-Level Courses Whilst many university-level courses are labelled as ‘full-time’ the attendance can vary greatly, sometimes being only one day a week in college or university. Detailed course and finance information is available at www. hlcollege. ac.uk or in the UniversityLevel Course Guide. We strongly recommend that you refer to the most up-to-date information on our website so you can make an informed decision.

Can I Pay By Instalments? You can pay by instalments on certain high cost courses. We regret that we are unable to offer this facility on courses where the total cost payable is less than £200. The instalment plan consists of two simple steps: 1) 25% deposit at enrolment 2) Followed by three equal monthly payments by direct debit commencing at an agreed start date Alternative payment options include bank transfer, credit/ debit card, cash, cheque or online via our website. Account facilities are available to employers, provided that written evidence is produced in advance of the student’s enrolment, indicating that the employer is willing to pay fees on the student’s behalf.

What Happens If I Need a Refund? Classes need to be viable in order to run. If there are not enough students, a full refund will be paid. Refunds for any other reason are only granted in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the College.

What Fees Will Apply If I Am a Student From Overseas (non-eu)? HLC welcomes students from overseas and we’re sure that you will find HLC an ideal place to study. HLC has attracted students from all over the world. Fees for students who are from overseas are

HLC is committed to supporting any student in need of additional support with their studies, to enable them to reach their full potential. Student Voice Student Voice Surveys take place once a year and are an important part of the College’s development. After the last Student Voice Survey in 2019, which involved 2,400 students, the College was able to make significant changes. You can see the outcomes of

HEREFORD UNIVERSITY CENTRE In partnership with the University of Worcester, the Centre acts as an educational and cultural hub, aiming to raise educational aspirations in Herefordshire and encourage increased participation in higher education.

How Can it Help Me? At the core of the Centre is the HUC Coordinator who facilitates a range of talks, lectures and activities aimed at involving the community at the College. Though these will all be on varied subjects, they offer you the opportunity to get a feel of what university lectures might be like and how you can be inspired by the expansion of ideas and theories. OTHER STUDENT SERVICES In addition to Learner Services there are a wide range of other services and facilities which you can access whilst studying at the College. There are a range of facilities on both campuses which can be used by all HLC students; they are not campus specific.

Cider Orchard Restaurant The Cider Orchard Restaurant is situated in the Community Studies Building at the Hereford Campus. It is HLC’s training restaurant and has a fantastic menu to choose from. Tea, coffee, cakes and lunches are available most weekdays and dinner is available on Wednesday evenings. The restaurant is open to students, staff and the public. Nursery HLC’s Hereford Campus has an on-site nursery with places for 35 children between the ages of six months and five years. Students are able to study in the knowledge that their children are cared for by qualified and experienced staff. This is a provision of the highest quality and follows the Early Years Foundation Stage to work towards all children’s individual needs. What Levels of Apprenticeship are Available? There are three levels of apprenticeships available for those aged 16 and over and living, working or studying in England. 1) Intermediate Apprenticeships: (equivalent to five good GCSE passes) Intermediate Apprenticeships involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 2 (relevant to the occupational sector or job role). Achievement of an Intermediate Apprenticeship may allow progression onto an Advanced Apprenticeship. To start an Intermediate Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have five GCSEs (grade 2/ grade E or above). 2) Advanced Apprenticeships: Advanced apprenticeships (equivalent to two A Level passes) involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 3 (relevant to the occupational sector or job role). Achievement of an Advanced Apprenticeship may allow progression onto a Higher Apprenticeship. To start an Advanced Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have five good GCSEs (grade 4/grade C or above) or have successfully completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship.

3) Higher Apprenticeships: Higher and Degree Apprenticeships involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 4 or above (relevant to the occupational sector or job role), and as defined by the Framework or Standard. Higher Apprenticeships at Level 4 and Level 5 can allow progression on to university degrees, and Degree Apprenticeships are now becoming more widely available in many sectors. To start a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have a relevant Level 3 vocational qualification, three good A Levels, or have completed a relevant Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. HOW TO APPLY & FIND AN EMPLOYER So you’ve chosen an industry and you think an apprenticeship might be for you. What next? You need an employer and there are a few ways to get one: 1. Approach them directly - you can contact an employer to see if they would like to take you on as an apprentice. They might not know that they need an apprentice until you contact them! Remember that you are hoping that they will take you on as an employee, so act professionally and make a good impression. If you can, find out a bit about the company first by visiting their website and preparing what you want to say. Remember there are other attributes that employers value, such as: ► Enthusiasm ► Willingness to learn ► Reliability ► Punctuality ► Responsibility ► Working as part of a team ► Good sense of humour ► Working on your own initiative

How Long is an Apprenticeship?

2. Call the College - many businesses contact HLC to find them an apprentice that would be suited to them, so there might be just the right job for you. Get in touch on 0800 032 1986 and we can advise you on the next steps like sending us your CV and possible interviews.

The minimum length of an apprenticeship is 12 months, but some apprenticeships will be designed to last two, three or four years.

3. Look for adverts - some companies advertise apprenticeship vacancies and they are looking for people like you to join their business. This could be in local press, national press, at job fairs, through recruitment agencies or online through sites such as:

You may be required to attend college or other off-the-job training in order to gain certain skills and undertake certain assessments. This can be on day release or block release, depending on the apprenticeship you choose.

THE HOLME LACY CAMPUS The Holme Lacy Campus offers outstanding learning facilities, benefitting from well-spread workshops and classrooms in a spacious, yet friendly environment. The campus comprises specialist land-based facilities and a commercially managed 257 hectare estate, which includes an arable, beef and sheep farm; woodlands; orchards and lakes.

DANCE DANCE-MX is a mix of different dance styles used to create a dance for fitness program. The sessions cross dance styles from Bollywood to Ballet, Street Jazz to Salsa or Contemporary to Tango. FINDING HEREFORDSHIRE & LUDLOW COLLEGE HLC has two campuses in Herefordshire: the Hereford Campus is situated above the city centre to the north-east and the Holme Lacy Campus is in a rural setting about 6 miles south-east of Hereford city centre. HEREFORD CAMPUS – HR1 1LS This campus is just to the north-east of the city centre, conveniently close to both the train station and the central bus terminal and is served well by the regular public transport system. If you travel by car please note that a parking permit system operates on campus; full details are available from reception or on our website. The Campus was completely transformed in 2010 following a £32 million development. If you would like to visit before you apply then see the details of our Open Events on page 3. HOLME LACY CAMPUS – HR2 6LL This campus is located at the western edge of the village of Holme Lacy, approximately 4 miles to the south-east of Hereford on the B4399. A bus service operates from Hereford city centre although it is advisable to check times on the Herefordshire Council website. The campus is set above the River Wye in our 257 hectares estate which encompasses a mixed organic working farm, ancient and commercial woodlands and traditional parkland with ponds and streams. It also includes specialist learning facilities and the much acclaimed Straw Bale Café development which has been the centre of focus for its sustainable credentials. HOW TO APPLY OPTION ONE Leisure Courses Please note that all 19+ Leisure Courses require full payment upon booking and can only run with sufficient numbers of students. In the event of a course not being able to run due to low student numbers a full refund will be given or you can transfer payment to another course. If you are applying for one of our 19+ Leisure Courses you can collect a short course application form from the Hereford Campus Reception. OPTION TWO Professional Skills & Training You can collect a form from the Hereford Campus or use one of the following ways to apply: Web: Apply online at www.hlcollege.ac.uk Phone: Call us on 0800 032 1986, we can send you a form Application Process An acknowledgement letter will be sent to you within three days of receiving your application. (If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t receive a letter, please contact the Enquiries Team: 0800 032 1986.) 1) If your course choice requires an interview, a date and time will be organised and you will receive notification of this by letter. There will be a reply form attached to your interview invitation and you must send this back to confirm your appointment date. 2) The interview will give you the opportunity to discuss your reasons for choosing your course and what your future plans may be. The tutor is there to help you, so please ask as many questions as you like to make sure you are happy with your choice. 3) After your interview, you will receive either a letter to confirm your course offer or a letter of referral to another suitable course. 4) There will be an acceptance form attached to your letter, which should be sent back to us to confirm your acceptance of the course offer. 5) The enrolment process varies from course to course. For the majority of courses which start in September, you will be informed of your enrolment dates in August.
