Q: WHERE’S THE BEEF ? A:
HERE’S THE BEEF ™. ™
We’ve gone back to the grill to make our classic cheeseburgers thicker, hotter and juicier than ever. They’re 100% North American beef. And, we’ve added new premium toppings and a buttered, toasted bun. The way it should be.

elcome players, parents, college scouts and fans to Hockey Night in Boston’s 18th annual Girls Summer Showcase, a top-flight tournament consisting of players from over 20 different states and Canada Last summer’s tournament saw the Minnesota return to the championship throne, knocking off the Mass. Preps, 51, in the title game. This year’s Showcase will certainly boast some exciting up-and-down action, as the Showcase will again field 10 teams competing for the 2012 championship: Massachusetts Preps, Massachusetts Public/Catholic, New England, Northeast, Minnesota, Mid Atlantic, Keystone Selects, Shamrocks, TeamONE, and a new entry this summer, as Midwest has returned to the fold. Each team will play five first-round games, before the playoff round takes place on Saturday, August 11th. The two five-team divisions will cross over, with 5th vs 5th, 4th vs 4th, etc, The top two teams in each division will play in a semifinal, leading to the 2012 Championship game.

HNIB 18th Annual girls Summer Showcase Welcome Players, Parents, Scouts With the amazing growth womens hockey has seen, HNIB decided in 1995 to add the Girls Summer Showcase to its summer activities. 2012 marks the 38th year of HNIB’s nationally-known boys tournament, which will have finished playoffs and All Star competition before the womens tournament got underway. The Minnesota entry consists of a group of top high school age players in the state. This summer, CADP Program Director Lenny Vannelli will return to the bench and co-coach with daughter Laura Vannelli with what should be another potent club. The Massachusetts Preps idea was born three summers ago as a team was put together consisting of players who either live or play prep hockey in Massachusetts. The team won the crown each of its firsttwo years and reached the finals last summer. This year’s outfit will be guided by Jenelle Ries of nearby Brooks School. The same formula held true for Frank Pagliuca, the coach of Massachusetts state high school power St. Mary’s of Lynn, who has put together a solid club representing the Massachusetts Public and Catholic schools for the fourth straight summer. Under the guidance of Bob Rotondo, his organization, the Boston Jr. Shamrocks, has come up players blended with some solid talent from the Southeast to form the Shamrocks team, to be coached this summer by new Shamrocks assistant coach Arianna Rigano. Back after a few years absence is Midwest. The team, which is comprised primarily of players for Michigan, Ohio and Illinois, will be coached by Lauren Pelton from The Belle Tire AAA organization. On the weekend of June 8-10, a camp festival was held at the Valley Forum in Haverhill, MA, where two teams were finalized. The coaching staff of Kim Nanof of Kents Hill, Courtney Sheary from Cushing Academy, Pagliuca, and Canterbury’s Jessica Magnuson finalized the New England and the Northeast entries. Magnuson will coach the Mid Atlantic entry, Nanof will man the New England bench, and Christina Dotchin is back to guide the fortunes of Team Northeast. So, look forward to some exciting hockey over the next several days. Once again, congratulations to all the participants. This year’s Keystone Selects entry was put together by Craig Buntenbach and the team promises to be exciting. It will be coached by Joanne Seifert of the Quakers organization. The youngest team in the tournament will be TeamOne, coached by Ray Jacques. The team is comprised of some of the best young talent in the area, hoping to make some noise against its older competition.

he explosion of women's hockey -- and the ever increasing skills of those who play it -- during the past two decades is well-chronicled. Those trends parallel directly the growth and popularity of Hockey Night In Boston's Girls Summer Showcase, which hits the ice for the 18th time this week. Ten teams will take part in the five-day tournament, featuring elite players from across the country. Team Minnesota seeks to defend its 2011 championship. Five players to watch are the Mass. Public/Catholic pair of Alison Butler from St. Mary's of Lynn (MA) and Kayla Smith of Woburn (MA) High School; the Mass. Prep duo of Martha Findley (Cushing Academy) and Alison Quinn (Southfield School); and Southfield's Briana D'Avolio, who will lace them up for the Shamrocks. After leading Duxbury (MA) High School to consecutive
Massachusetts Division Two State Championships, standout defenseman Martha Findley is taking her game to Cushing for another year of development in the classroom and on the ice. It was an easy choice. "I visited a number of schools and I just found Cushing to be the bet fit for key and my academic needs. I felt that the Cushing coaches -- Coach Kennedy, Coach Sheary and Coach Lawler -- would prepare me for playing college hockey," said Findley, who racked up the accolades following this past season, earning spots on both The Boston Globe and Boston Herald Dream Teams and being selected as Miss Hockey by ESPN Boston. Findley is well-prepared for the transition to the level of play in the prep ranks and most recently played for Assabet Valley's U19 Red Major Team that won USA Hockey's Tier 1 National Championship this past spring. Martha Findley Won 2 Mass. State Titles At Duxbury HS (Continued From Page 30)
"Assabet Valley consisted of many of the best prep school hockey players in the country, so I don't think I will have any difficulties transitioning to the prep level. My club coaches (Dennis Laing, Jake Mastel, Bill Horan) prepared me very well," said Findley, who has played club hockey since the age of eight. Findley has been training with UNH All-American defenseman Brian Yandle on defensive skills, decision-making and skating. Off the ice, Findley can most often be found in the gym working with a strength and conditioning coach. She skates once a week with the Assabet College girls team and has transformed the family driveway into a personal shooting gallery, firing between 100 and 300 pucks a day. Findley's primary assets are her communication skills and vision, evidenced by her 21 assists this past season. She is already seeing results from her dedication to improving her speed and strength. Mass Preps advanced to the Showcase final last summer and Findley likes the caliber of players on this club. Though she is being recruited be a number of Division 1 and Division 3 programs, Findley is non-committal in regards to college. A strong tournament this week could go a long way toward bringing that process into sharper focus.
St. Mary’s Star Alison Butler A Deft Playmaker A staple of the Spartans' powerhouse program since they won the Division One State title in her freshman season, St. Mary’s standout Alison Butler has a sole goal on her mind -- to help the reigning Catholic Central champs regain the State crown after falling in the 2012 Division One title game to Catholic Central League foe Arlington Catholic, a team the Spartans defeated twice during the regular season. A superb playmaker, Butler counted 44 assists among her 61 points last season to rank third among Division One scorers. She was recipient of the Moynihan Lumber MVP Award given to the fop female player from Massachusetts' North Shore region. (Continued On Page 32)

"My most memorable hockey moment was when my team won the State Championship my freshman year. Our goal for this season is to win (another) State Championship," Butler said. To that end she has been working throughout the off-season to hone all aspects of her game.
Butler is also a member of St. Mary’s powerhouse softball team "My strengths as a player are my awareness of what is going on and my shot. I feel I still need to work on my stride and work on getting to full speed quicker," said Butler, a Mass. Public/Catholic returnee who is familiar with many of her teammates. "I think we will be pretty good and will compete well." Butler, also a member of St. Mary's powerhouse softball team, hopes to play college hockey and her goal is to head directly to college upon graduation from St. Mary's. She has visited a number of schools but is keeping her options open and will consider all offers as they come. She hopes to pursue a degree in Nursing or Physical Therapy.
Woburn’s Kayla Smith Has A Scorer’s Touch Pairing a bona fide finisher like Smith with a prolific puck distributor like her Mass. Public/Catholic teammate Alison Butler might be a wise idea. The senior sniper potted 31 goals and finished fourth in Massachusetts Division One scoring with 57 points while leading Woburn to the Middlesex League championship and a Division One quarterfinal State Tournament appearance where the Tanners fell to eventual champion Arlington Catholic in a shootout. Smith, the Middlesex League MVP as a junior, has been busy honing her skills during the off-season and hopes the Girls Summer Showcase serves as a springboard to another successful year for the Tanners, a program she takes great pride in. "My most memorable hockey moment has definitely been being a Woburn Tanner; it's hard (Continued On Page 33)

to explain the pride our team has. Aside from our goals of winning the league and state championship, we are also striving to improve as a team," said Smith, who also plays soccer. "Mainly I have been working on becoming a stronger and faster player. I've been going to (Mike) Boyle's along with skating a few times a week. "I understand the concept of hard work and dedication. I realize that if I'm not playing to my full potential, it affects not only me but my teammates," Smith said. Asked which aspects of her game need work, she said "everything -- there's always room for improvement." Smith expressed confidence in the make-up of the Mass. Public/Catholic roster. "We have a lot of hardworking and talented players, so I think we'll fare very well in the tournament," she said. Mass Public/Catholic is seeking its first-ever tournament title. Smith plans to pursue a course of study in the fitness field in college. She has made no commitments and is open to all possibilities, including a PG year. "I definitely know I will be playing college hockey. I see the benefits of a PG year and I've been weighing the options. I just haven't decided yet which direction I'll go. I have visited some colleges that I'm interested in but I'm definitely still looking to check out several more before I make my final decision," she said.

Prep squad that has a single goal this week -- regaining the title it lost to Minnesota last summer after winning back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010. "Based on the roster this year it looks like we we will be in strong contention again. It's fun to play on the Mass Prep team because during the prep season I play against a lot of the girls I play with for Hockey Night In Boston, so it makes for some friendly competition during the school season," said Quinn, a key cog on the Southfield squad that suffered a 2-1 triple OT loss to Rivers in last season's NEPSAC Tournament. "The girls and I, as well as our coach Amy Cokinos, have put our hearts and souls into winning a championship (but) every year thus far we have lost in the playoffs in wrenching games. As I enter my last year at Southfield our main goal is to walk away with a championship. Since the eighth grade I have been anticipating hoisting a championship trophy with my (Continued On Page 34)

teammate, defenseman Erin Hall. We are committed to our strong sense of team and plan to maximize our individual strengths into a coordinated effort while having fun reaching our team goals," she said. The three-sport athlete has focused on enhanced strength training in the off-season while committing to proper nutrition as a means of gaining a competitive edge. "I've been told that my greatest strength as a player would be my speed. My dad has always said it's been my back checking, so I take a lot of pride in that. I'd like to think my greatest strength is helping to elevate the play of my team both when I am on and off the ice," Quinn said. "I'm always working to better my shot. It's improved greatly over the last couple of years but it needs to become the very best part of my game if I am going to become an elite college player." Quinn plans to attend college directly after graduation from Southfield in 2013 and one day hopes to coach hockey at a high level. "I've had the opportunity to talk to a lot of coaches and I've gotten to experience many campuses. I'm excited to find the perfect fit for me; it's just difficult because
there are so many great schools and coaches out there. There is one school I can see myself playing for and this coach in particular gave me great advice, which was encouraging me to explore all my options before I commit," Quinn said.

Briana D’Avolio Will Be Catalyst For Shamrocks
Junior Briana D’Avolio, who is skating for the Shamrocks this week, has been a staple of the Southfield varsity since earning a roster spot as a seventh-grader. "It was awesome to play with girls that were older and stronger than me -- I had to work twice as hard to keep up but I loved that challenge. Even though players have come and gone since that season I feel as though that is where it all began and I experienced so much growth in the game of hockey. Every season to me is memorable. I consider my team as family, but that first year is one that nobody can take away from me," she said. "The goals for Southfield this season are to come together as a unit and as a result have a successful record. We have many strong and talented players individually and if we all put our individual talents (Continued On Page 35)

together then I am confident we will excel together," added D'Avolio, who has been Southfield's varsity soccer goalie since the seventh grade and also plays softball. D'Avolio has been working with a personal trainer three times a week across a range of disciplines such as strength training, agility and intervals work.
"My strengths are my determination, my ability to make quick decisions on the ice and my physical strength. All three make me a strong player but my determination is something a player cannot learn. nation is something a player cannot learn. I feel it is something you are born with and I am most proud of," she said. "I feel you can always improve every aspect of your game so long as you are a competitive person. I have focused this summer working on my shot and stick handling." D'Avolio expects the Shamrocks to be a competitive group in the tournament's National Division. "It looks like a strong group of players and I am looking forward to the opportunity to play with all of them. Bob Rotondo has always put together great programs with strong teams that I always enjoy being involved with," she said. D'Avolio plans to enroll in college for the 2013-14 academic year and will play hockey while pursuing a Business Degree with an emphasis on Marketing. "I am in the midst of touring all different types of colleges and universities, some small and private and others are big institutions. It will come down to the education and the hockey program for me," she said.

his outfit made its debut at HNIB last summer with the name Pennsylvania. In 2012, the team will be dubbed the Keystone Selects and look to improve on last summer’s standing. The task of coaching this group goes to Joanne Seifert, who coaches with the Quakers U-16 program in Pennsylvania. Five forwards from this year’s squad return, so the experience from last summer’s Showcase can only help.
Senior Hannah Bird, from Arrowhead HS in Oconomowoc, WI, will be an offensive leader; she earned the Team MVP Award last summer at HNIB. Senior Courtney Loesch, from the Quakers U-19 program, will be a key player as well. Sophomore Courtney Krueger is a teammate of Bird’s at Arrowhead HS and returns to the lineup, as do senior Lilly Henjes from the Quakers and Pottstown, PA’s Katelyn Hutchinson, who plays prep hockey at St. George’s School in Rhode Island.

t or near the top of this Showcase since the team’s inception three years ago, the Massachusetts Preps are hoping to continue that trend and battle to grasp back the title this franchise won in 2009 and 2010. Back for her second season behind the bench is Jenelle Ries, the head coach at New England D-2 Prep heavy Brooks School. Despite returning several players from last summer’s finalist, this is still a young club.
At forward, Mass Preps will boast just four seniors, including a trio of sharpshooters that return from last summer’s squad. Southfield’s Alison Quinn will be a vital cog in the offense, as she was this past season for Southfield. Eleanor Knutzen of Middlesex School (A New England finalist), and Lauren Bishop of Brooks will be key to the Mass Preps offense. The fourth senior on the club is Katherine Bienkowski of St. George’s, and HNIB Showcase veteran.

Junior Arushi Ray (Middlesex School) and sophomore Danielle Doherty (Brooks) both move over from the TeamONE roster from last summer. Defense will be a strongpoint for Mass Preps. Post-grad Martha Findley heads to Cushing after a starry career at Duxbury HS where she won two state titles and was Ms. Hockey for ESPN this past winter. She will join her new teammate with the Penquins in senior Caitlin Ryan, another returning member. Keep an eye on junior Brooke Gary from Middlesex, a solid blueliner. ith what looks to be a pretty solid offensive attack and some sound goaltending, the Massachusetts Public/Catholic team should be right in the mix if it gets the job done in the defensive zone. Head coach Frank Pagliuca of HS power St. Mary’s Lynn returns to mentor this club, which features many of the top players in Mass. Girls HS hockey. Up front, look for senior Kayla Smith (57 pts) of Woburn to be a key part, along with St. Mary’s senior Alison Butler (61
pts). Both return from last summer’s Mass Public/Catholic club. St. Mary’s teammates senior Kaleigh Finigan (48 pts) and junior Brittani Lanzilli (54 pts) will be tough to stop. This duo is making their first appearance on the team, but played with other HNIB entries last summer. Making his HNIB coaching baptism behind the Mid Atlantic bench will be newly-named Canterbury School head coach Chris Huntington. The forward group features a good mix of prep school and high school players.
Albany Academy senior Teagan Ketchum (Averill Park, NY) and Gunnery junior Sarah Hughson (Moodus, CT) should have key roles in the Mid-Atlantic roster. Senior Andie Plumeri, now at St. George’s, moves to the forward lines after playing defense the past two summers at HNIB. Junior Morgan Walsh is a Mass. native who skates up at Kimball Union. ack after a few years of hiatus, Team Midwest hopes to return to the HNIB Girls Showcase with a bang.
Bringing the team out East is Lauren Pelton, who has coached with the well-know Belle Tire AAA program in Michigan. This team has some potential. The Ohio Flames program is well-represented on the offensive side of things, with no less than four forwards calling that program home.
Junior Alyssa Visalli (Mason, OH) will be a player to keep an eye on around the net, as will sophomore Erin Langermeier (Westlake, OH). Also looking to contribute on the scoresheet will be sophomore Elizabeth Sheline (Reynoldsburg, OH) and freshman Kelley Madden (Novelty, OH). Belle Tire standout Victoria Pelton will have a big say in the offense. Fellow Michigan native Gabrielle Schnepp, also a senior, plays with the Little Caesars program.

f Team Minnesota is going to defend its 2011 title here at HNIB, it will do so with a young club.
Only two seniors dot the roster for Minnesota. The team may be young, but it will be talented. The coaching duties will be shared, as program director Lenny Vannelli returns behind the Minnesota dasher, listed as a co-coach along with his daughter Laura Vannelli. Orono High School is well represented with three of its forwards here at HNIB. Junior Madison Martini, junior Becky Smith and promising freshman Brianna Bren all will be key cogs in the Minnesota lineup.
Junior Kristen Reuter (Inver Grove) and sophomore Shaniah Anderson (Burnsville) both are big-time contributors offensively for Rosemount HS. The lone forward returning from last summer’s championship team at HNIB is sophomore Emily Antony, who plays at Rogers HS. The lone senior up front is Brittany Sticha (Lonsdale), a star at New Prague HS. Junior McKenzie Swenson hails from the well-known Benilde St. Margaret’s program. ith five sophomores in the front lines, it may be the defense that holds the key for Team New England this summer. Kents Hill (ME) head coach Kim Nanof has what projects as an experienced defensive unit, which will be an asset as the young forwards get their feet wet. Up front, New England has only three seniors. Beverly High’s Olivia Konaxis and Kaitlynn Roy of Maine’s
Cheverus HS are both returning HNIB Showcase players and will provide leadership, as will the group’s third senior Lauren Lessard of Kents Hill and Lewiston, ME. Dedham HS junior Colleen Downing (44 pts) has shown she has a penchant for piling up points. he Northeast entry showed last summer that hard work goes a long way, as their close-to-the vest play kept them highly-competitive. Coach Christina Dotchin of Proctor Academy hopes the same work ethic is there this summer, and that some magic from here New England D-2 prep title rubs off as well. Senior forwards looking to get things rolling for Northeast include Fontbonne sparkplug McKenna Russell and
Gabriella Crugnale of St. Mary’s, both returning HNIB players. The only other senior up front is Medfield (MA) HS standout Nicole Reardon. Coach: Christina Dotchin - Proctor Acad. There are no less than six sophomores in the forward group. Keep an eye on Shanna Hickman, who brings her talents to New England D-1 prep champion Nobles this season. Mt St. Charles’ flash Elisabeth Berard is capable of scoring in bunches. Elena Driscoll has a key role in the attack at Governor’s Academy. Sarah Wagner will be more involved this upcoming season with her championship club at Hanover HS in NH. Westwood High’s LuLu Swartz is a solid, two-way performer. Sophomore Lindsay Brown contributes heavily to the cause at Medfield HS.

The Northeast defense will have a lot of experience. Senior Kerry Twomey (NH Avalanche) moves over from the New England entry and brings her guile and experience. Junior Jillian Witwicki from Pingree School is able to get involved mightily with the offense as well. Another HNIB returner is junior Chelsea Ellis, who patrols the back line for her BFA St. Albans team in Vermont. A fellow Vermonter and player to watch is senior Mikaela Flanagan, who skates for Missisquoi Valley Union.
Senior Jessie Egan is a solid, twoway rearguard from Springfield Cathedral. Senior Kayla Kee controls things for her Newton South team. Junior Amanda Donohoe is part of the great tradition at St. Mary’s Lynn. Looking to make a name for herself is freshman Delaney Guimont from the NH Avalanche. In goal, senior Kelcey Crawford should be top-notch; she won a New England prep crown at Proctor. Junior Emily Spencer is bound for Milton Academy in the fall, while Ashley Dallaire minds the pipes for Archbishop Williams HS in MA. Page 53

Well-Rounded Club Looks To Complete

ooking to make a push in the tough National Division is the Shamrocks team, comprised partly of players from that organization, other top area players, and some talent from the Southeast. The team will be coached this summer by Ariana Rigano, a coach with the Shamrocks and former HNIB player. Two players who should be involved heavily in the offense are junior Briana D’Avolio, who plays at Southfield School,
and sophomore Devan Taylor from Lawrence Academy, a returner to the Shamrocks lineup. Sophomore Taylor Wenczkowski, from the Seacoast Spartans, was a National Camp participant will be tough to stop. Junior Lindsay MacDonald plays with the Shamrocks, but also stars for Westford Academy. Arlington HS sends two of its offensive stalwarts in senior Kaitlyn Morse and senior Eva Colarusso.

TEAM(S) Washington Pride Boston Shamrocks Governor’s Acad.
Coach: Arianna Rigano - Boston Shamrocks Senior Kara Donati pitched in on offense for her Winthrop/Lynn team this past winter. Sophomore Mary Latona is a Shamrocks product and also returns from last summer’s club. A pair of promising freshmen dot the forward roster in Meggan Rodriguez of Andover and Maggie Flaherty of Medford, both part of the Shamrocks organization. On the blue line, senior Hailey Hart of Kimball Union played with the Mass Public/Catholic club last summer and will be a key in the defensive zone. Shamrocks junior Jenna Rheault, from Hillsboro, NH, will have a lot of responsibility. Three solid blue liners from the southeast part of the country will make their presence felt. Senior Rebecca Ryan (Lorton, VA), who plays at Tilton School, has been a Southeast Team member at HNIB the past two summers. The highly-regarded Washington Pride program sends two of its standouts in senior
Colors: Red Cecelia Shewell and sophomore Zoey Pellowitz. Arlington HS junior Meredith Gallagher will join with Natick’s Amanda McGoldrick, who could also see time at forward, and Masconomet’s Nancy Palermo to give the Shamrocks entry more depth on the blue line. In goal, junior Maggie Salmon from Governor’s Academy, and sophomore Kassi Abbott from the Shamrocks, both Medford, MA natives, and the Washington Pride’s Ari Wernick will handle the duties.

he young guns from TeamONE made quite an impression in their HNIB baptismal last winter, giving their older opponents fits. Now a year older, TeamONE is ready to make its move. Coach Ray Jacques will certainly have this team ready to go as it strives to get a spot in the semifinals. A strong nucleus of forwards return for TeamONE. Sophomore Jessica Jacques, who plays with the U-19
Shamrocks, is fresh off a USA Hockey National Camp appearance, while freshman Caitrin Lonergan, who impressed last summer as an eighth-grader, brings her talents to St Paul’s in the fall. Twin sisters Ann Marie and Gina Beth Manganiello are back to cause more havoc. The junior tandem play for Mass. HS power St. Mary’s of Lynn during the regular season. The talented Lilly Castro is back as well; she also is off to St. Paul’s this season.

Keep an eye on freshman Alexis Banquer of the Mid-Fairfield Stars. Junior Ellen Chiligris comes all the way from the Chicago Mission program in Illlinois. Four of the six TeamONE blue liners return. Junior standout Jackie Guy holds down the fort for her St. Louis Lady Blues club. Junior Bryanna Keaton is a key concern with the Assabet Valley
program. Brittany Colton will begin her freshman season with Lawrence Academy and also toils with Assabet Valley. The fourth returner on the blue line is sophomore Rebecca Raphael, who sees winter ice time with the Shamrocks. Two new defensemen to keep an eye on are sophomore Baye Flanagan, a Billerica product who plays at the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid, and sophomore Allie Munroe, a native of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia who plays her prep hockey at New Hampton School.
