HNIB’s 25th Annual Girls Summer Showcase By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB
elcome players, parents, college scouts and fans to Hockey Night in Boston’s 25th annual Girls Summer Showcase, a top-flight tournament consisting of players from over 15 different states. Last summer’s tournament saw Eastern win its first HNIB title, rallying with two late goals for a 2-1 win over Mass. Public/Catholic, which was seeking its third straight crown. This year’s Showcase will certainly boast some exciting upand-down action, as the Showcase will again field 14 teams competing for the 2019 championship: Massachusetts Preps, Massachusetts Public/Catholic, New England, Northeast, Mid Atlantic, Jr. Shamrocks, Eastern, Central, Metro, Rhode Island, Atlantic, Suburban, and two new entries Southeast and Northern New England. Each team will play four first-round games, before the playoff rounds begin on Friday, August 2nd. The top two teams in each Division will enter into the semifinals and vie for the Girls Summer Showcase title. The remaining teams - 3rd place through 7th place - will play a cross-over “playoff’ game. With the amazing growth womens hockey has seen, HNIB decided in 1995 to add the Girls Summer Showcase to its summer activities. 2019 marks the historic 45th year of HNIB’s nationally-known boys tournament, and the amazing 25th year of our Girls Summer Showcase. The Massachusetts Preps are in their tenth summer and were put together and will be coached by Jenelle Ries from Brooks School. The same formula held true for Frank Pagliuca, the coach of St. Mary’s of Lynn, who has put together a solid club representing the Massachusetts Public/Catholic schools Under the guidance of Bob Rotondo, his organization, the Boston Jr. Shamrocks, has come up with players from his multitiered organization to form the Jr. Shamrocks team, to be coached this summer by Molly Corl. HNIB expanded this year to include new June Festivals at the Bog in Kingston, MA, and at the Worcester Ice Center, to go along with its long-running Festival north of Boston, held this year at the Essex Sports Center. The five teams finalized from those round of Festivals include Mid-Atlantic, coached by Corey Cooper of Hotchkiss, Metro, coached by Anthony Cornacchia of Matignon, New England,

Now in its sixth year at the HNIB Girls Showcase is Eastern, put together by Lawrence Academy coach Kevin Potter. They are the defending champions. Central, was constructed and will be coached by Kevin Zifcak, the head coach at Worcester Academy, a D2 Prep power. This summer, Rhode Island, was put together and will be coached by Kurt Carter of Portsmouth Abbey, who will also coach the Atlantic entry and put together the Suburban squad, coached by Millbrook’s Erica Shapey Berwick head coach Kelly Souza has put together a new entry called Northern New England, which looks to compete right away with a young squad. HNIB wishes good luck to all the teams. Please have a fun tournament of competitive hockey.

his weekend’s 25th edition of the Girls Summer Showcase once again brings together premier players from the high school, prep and Junior ranks. This weekend’s event at The Essex Sports Center in Middleton, MA features 14 teams from Massachusetts and New England as well as other areas from across the country. In our cover story, we offer you feature profiles on St. Paul’s sophomore defenseman Kristina Allard (Team New England), who has already committed to Northeastern University; senior forward Ciara Wall of Worcester Academy (Central), who is bound for UNH; Methuen/Tewksbury’s senior goalie Kaia Hollingsworth (Mass. Public-Catholic, a six-year varsity starter; senior defenseman Julia Holmes of Winchendon (Mass. Preps); and senior forward Katie Flynn (Junior Shamrocks U19). KRISTINA ALLARD Imagine, if you can, the relief you might feel as a high school underclassman if you already knew where your college path would lead. Kristina Allard is in just that position, already committed to Northeastern University thanks to the relaxation of NCAA rules regarding recruiting restrictions.
“I knew almost immediately I wanted to go to Northeastern. The balance of hockey and academics is evenly distributed so players can maintain their grades while playing at a top Division One school. They have a former Olympic coach, which makes the training that much better. On top of that it’s in Boston, which provides huge opportunities, including the unique education (co-op) program,” said Allard. Prior to making her decision, Allard handled recruiting calls almost daily. “There is a lot of weight lifted off my shoulders, both in the classroom and on the ice. Knowing where I’ll be playing allows me to concentrate on my long-term goals,” she said. Those goals include earning the opportunity to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. St. Paul’s enjoyed a stellar 21-3-4 season last winter, falling to Kent in the quarterfinals of the NEPSAC Tournament. Allard said the Big Red’s goals remain just as lofty this winter. “St. Paul’s looks strong for the 2019 season. [We’ve] recruited several talented new players and we are expecting to win the NEPSAC,” she said. She is looking forward to her stint with Team New England this weekend. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 24)

“Looking at all the names, we put together a strong roster and Team New England should do well this tournament. I’m looking forward to building stronger relationships with all of the talented players from the area,” she said. As for her own game, Allard relies on speed, skating and toughness to create scoring opportunities; cites improved scoring and stickhandling as areas that need work; and is a big fan of Russian superstar Alex Ovechkin because of his opportunistic style of play.

“He’s always at the right place at the right time, creating scoring opportunities for himself and I often find myself getting involved in the offensive zone trying to create scoring chances,” she said. Allard credits her Assabet Valley coaches – head coach Dennis Laing and assistant coach Carl Grey – her father and her grandfather as the biggest influences on her career. “Coach Laing started coaching me when I was nine, taking me under his wing and pushing me to improve. Coach Gray has always stressed the importance of character, of doing well in school and using hockey as a gateway. One thing I always remember that has stuck with me is him telling me ‘The great (CONTINUED ON PAGE 25)

Mass Public/Catholic’s Hollingsworth Puts Up Impressive Numbers at M/T
KAIA HOLLINGSWORTH The career numbers posted by Methuen/Tewksbury’s senior goaltender Kaia Hollingsworth – entering her sixth season as the Rangers’ starting keeper – are staggering: 21 shutouts, approximately 2,400 shots against, and a .933 save percentage. This past March, in the Massachusetts Division One State Championship game on the biggest stage at TD Garden, she shined the brightest, stealing JULIA HOLMES - MASS PREPS the show with a 31-save performance in a 2-1 victory against previously undefeated Austin Prep. Follow us on Twitter “I think I was so relaxed because I knew that coming up short like last year all year long! was something that I didn’t want to relive,” said Hollingsworth of the @hnibonline Rangers’ 1-0 loss to Woburn in the 2018 State title game. “I knew that my team was going to put everything on the line to come out on top. I wanted to be the backbone for them so they could rely on me to make a save, just like how I rely on them to score. I was /////////////////////////////////////////// proud to be a ram //////// very proud of myself and of the rest of the team for playing as well as we did. We were definitely the underdogs but that didn’t stop us from playing our hearts out.” She has high expectations for this coming season as well. “I think that we are still going to be a very strong team. We did definitely lose a lot of talent and goal scorers, but we also have a lot of young talent. Every single girl on our team knows how important making it to the Garden and winning a State Championship is. We have a title to defend,” she said. She feels her game has grown exponentially during the years since she first took over as the Rangers’ keeper. “I’ve definitely grown a lot, mentally and skill-wise. I have a lot of high school hockey experience and I’ve played with a handful of girls who have been state record-setters and who have moved on to play D1/D3 college hockey. College preparatory program serving grades 9-12 Fall Strength & Conditioning Program Their work ethic has influenced me – playing Ice Arena located on campus & postgraduates, located in Tilton, New Hampshire against talent like that has improved my game. attendance. “I know that this team has many top girls from Massachusetts on it. I am very excited to play hockey with them, especially at this high skill tourney. I hope to gain some more confidence and relationships that can help me with the college process,” she said, adding that she has spoken with some D3 coaches but has “nothing serious yet” regarding a college commitment. Hollingsworth’s calm, but competitive demeanor has always been a staple of her success.
“I don’t let the pressure get to me. I play very disciplined and I always work hard. Ever since I started playing I’ve always had a competitive nature and I always want the best for my team,” she said. Studying professional goalies as well as those on the U.S. Women’s Olympic team has been part of her self-education. “I’ve had a lot of people influence my game over the years. My parents and my coaches have always pushed me to get better and try my hardest but they also made sure I was still having fun,” she said.

A mainstay on the back line for Winchendon, senior defenseman Julia Holmes of Reading, MA returns to the Massachusetts Preps team in this weekend’s Summer Showcase as a two-time HNIB Top Defenseman winner. “It is an honor to be picked HNIB Top Defenseman. Each time I play, my goal is to do my job to help the team, not be recognized for an award, though it is really exciting! One thing I love about HNIB is meeting new girls and playing with friends from other prep school teams. I like playing for Coach Ries because she is fun on the bench. This year I want to help the team win the jacket for her!” Holmes said. Holmes is hopeful Winchendon can improve on its 11-7-4 mark from a year ago. “We lost a number of good players and teammates but we have a good mix of strong older and younger players coming in. I expect we will play hard in all three zones. Each year I’ve been at Winchendon we have performed better and better. I attribute that to a team that bonds well on and off the ice. I’m looking forward to a great season and solid results,” she said. Holmes has visited a number of colleges but has made no commitments and is treating the recruiting process with great patience. “I respectfully declined a recent offer from a great school because it just wasn’t the right fit for me. I’m looking to make a long-term life decision, not just an athletic one, so I’m not rushing the process,” she explained. The foundation of her game is her ability to control play in front of the net. “I have good gap control and this makes it hard to beat me 1 on 1. I pride myself on being gritty and being able to control the front of the net. I see the ice well and am able to stay calm under pressure to move the puck smartly,” she said. Since defense has always been her focus and strength, her goal “is to get involved more Overall Team GPA offensively. I think I have a strong shot, so I u19 3,91 need to use it more when opportunities hapu16 3.72 pen.” She is a huge fan of Kendall Coyne, the Olympic gold medalist who became the first 15+ Captains & Assistant Captains at D1/D3 Colleges woman to compete in the NHL All-Star skills competition last season. “I’ve always been one of the shortest players on my teams. Kendall proves that you don’t need height to compete at the highest level. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 27)

the first woman to compete in the NHL All-Star skills competition paves the way for other women to continue to do so. She is a great role model,” Holmes said. Holmes credits having had the chance to attend USA National Development Camps and play in USA Hockey National Tournaments as being crucial to her development. “Without these opportunities, I don’t believe I would have seen so many other states and been able to play and create friendships with top skaters my age in the country,” she said. Holmes hopes to pursue a career in the health sciences. “My school has students participate in internship type experiences each year. I truly enjoyed my physical therapy and pediatric clinic internship opportunities,” she said. CIARA WALL The senior forward from Worcester Academy embarks on her fourth Summer Showcase having already committed to the University of New Hampshire. “I decided to commit to UNH because I really loved the coaching staff there and when I visited the school I could really see myself going there. I also loved the ice surface – it’s Olympic sized so it’s much wider and for me. I love playing wide surfaces being a fast winger. I’m so excited to join the team there – it seems like a great community and I think I am going to love it there,” said Wall, who hails from Stoneham, MA. She expressed a level of comfort as she heads into her final season at Worcester. “It does help knowing where I’m going and I think now I can just focus on improving myself as much as possible as a player and preparing myself as much as I can for UNH,” said Wall, who attended Matignon High School for two years before transferring to Worcester and has racked up 98 goals and 250 career points in four seasons. She likes the make-up of this year’s Worcester squad and is hopeful it can improve on last year’s 14-10-3 mark. “We have a strong team and a great group of seniors to lead the team. We’ve got some good recruits coming in that will really benefit the team. I’m hoping for the team to have a really great season and to play our hardest every game as we have a more competitive schedule this coming season. The past two years we have come up short in the tournament losing in the semifinal both years so the goal is for this year to have a better tournament run,” she said. Boston Bruins’ standout Patrice Bergeron is her favorite player. “I have always looked up to him as a player. He has such a high hockey IQ and always makes smart decisions with the puck as I always try to do. He never

gives up on the puck or on a play. He’s one of the best two-way players and is always back checking and getting into plays some other players may give up on because they think they can’t get there in time,” she said. Consistency and sound decision-making are hallmarks of Wall’s game. “I have been told I have a high Hockey IQ and my good hockey sense allows me to make passes other players might not see and to minimize my mistakes,” she said. Shamrocks Ace Katie Flynn Ready For Big Week (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 27)
KATIE FLYNN New to the Hockey Night In Boston experience, Flynn is eager to get started. She is skating with the Junior Shamrocks U19 entry this weekend. “I’m mostly excited to be involved in a new environment with the opportunity to learn from different coaches and meet girls with the same interests and goals as me. I’m hoping to gain a new sense and perspective on the game that I will carry with me through college,” said Flynn, a Medford resident who attends Austin Prep. She is a Hockey Night legacy player, following her older sister Natalie. “My biggest influence has always been my older sister. She
played in the Summer Showcases during her high school years and eventually went on to play at Boston University and professionally in Germany. Ever since I was younger she has always been helping me improve as an athlete, whether it was teaching me how to take a wrist shot or helping me develop a greater hockey sense. I look to her for advice in everything I do,” said Flynn, who plays lacrosse at Austin Prep. It should be no surprise that she would also like to follow her sister’s path to BU. “I haven’t committed to any school yet, but I have always wanted to go to Boston University. That is what I am working towards. However, I’m still looking at various schools and exploring different options for myself,” said Flynn, who tallied six goals and 16 points for the Shamrocks last season. “She has such a drive and love for the game and it shows throughout her efforts on the ice. She has always been a role model to me throughout her college years into her professional career and has taught me that even if you aren’t the biggest player on the ice, you can still make a great deal of impact in the game,” Flynn said. She combines speed with physical and mental toughness to succeed and also knows what needs work to advance to the highest college level. While I am not a big player, I think I make up for it with my strength. I won’t hesitate to get rough in the corner for a 50/50 puck or get physical along the boards,” she said. “I think I can always work on improving my hands and my shot. Stick work is important and there’s always room for improvement in both areas. Finding a golf ball to stick handle after practice or shooting pucks in my basement are just two simple ways to stay sharp and keep improving even if I’m not on the ice.” She cited last season’s win against North American Hockey Academy in the semifinals of the JWHL playoff as her premier hockey experience. “We had worked so hard as individuals all season and that game finally showed that we could work together as a unit. We were the underdogs, so to come out on top was incredible for us as a team. It was a feeling I don’t think I will ever forget and that same feeling drives me to play every single day,” she noted.
