elcome players, parents, college scouts and fans to Hockey Night in Boston’s 23rd annual Girls Summer Showcase, a top-flight tournament consisting of players from over 20 different states. Last summer’s tournament saw Massachusetts Public/Catholic win its first HNIB title, eding Central, 2-1, in the championship game. This year’s Showcase will certainly boast some exciting up-and-down action, as the Showcase will now field 13 teams competing for the 2017 championship: Massachusetts Preps, Massachusetts Public/Catholic, New England, Northeast, Minnesota, Mid Atlantic, Shamrocks, Eastern, Central, Metro, Rhode Island, and two new entries: Tri-State and Atlantic. Each team will play four first-round games, before the playoff rounds begin on Friday, August 4th. The three division winners and best second place team will enter into semifinals and vie for the Girls Summer Showcase title. The next six teams will play a cross-over “playoff’ game, while the remaining teams will have a two, mini-game round-robin amongst themselves.

HNIB’s 23rd Annual Girls Summer Showcase Welcome Players, Parents, Scouts With the amazing growth womens hockey has seen, HNIB decided in 1995 to add the Girls Summer Showcase to its summer activities. 2017 marks the historic 43rd year of HNIB’s nationally-known boys tournament, The Minnesota entry consists of a group of top high school age players from the state. This summer, the team will be co-coached by Jordan Anderson and Hollywood Hermanson. The Massachusetts Preps are in their eighth summer and will be coached by Jenelle Ries from Brooks School. The same formula held true for Frank Pagliuca, the coach of St. Mary’s of Lynn, who has put together a solid club representing the Massachusetts Public/Catholic schools. Under the guidance of Bob Rotondo, his organization, the Boston Jr. Shamrocks, has come up with players from his multitiered organization to form the Jr. Shamrocks team, to be coached this summer by Molly Corl. Brewster Academy head coach Maeve Connelly will coach the New England team entry, Tilton’s Ben Tefft will man the Northeast bench, Cushing’s Val Bono will guide Metro, and Melrose HS’ Melissa Tetreau will coach Mid Atlantic. Now in its fourth year at the HNIB Girls Showcase is Eastern, put together by Lawrence Academy coach Kevin Potter. Central, was constructed and will be coached by Kevin Zifcak, the head coach at Worcester Academy, the New England D2 champions. In its second summer is Rhode Island, which has a nucleus of its players from the Ocean State. Kelly Souza, a coach at Berwick Academy, will be behind the bench for this group. Two new teams will be Tri-State, comprised with a majority of skaters from the Pennsylvania region and coached by Mike Keenan from the Delco Phantoms, and Atlantic, coached and put together by new Portsmouth Abbey head coach Kurt Carter.

new addition to the HNIB Summer Showcase this summer is the Atlantic team, which comes to the Valley Forum with a solid nucleus. New Portsmouth Abbey head coach Kurt Carter put together the bulk of the club and will be behind the bench to call the shots. The offense will feature a pair of Phillips Exeter products in junior Lydia Anderson and sophomore Jill Cloonan. Both hail from Woburn, MA. and will be involved in a big way. So, too, will be Rivers School senior Jenna Letterie, a solid forward for the Red Wings. Post-grad Bridget Fagan will be an immediate plus at Millbrook School after a nice career at Proctor. Junior Sophie Simard, of the Kingston Ice Wolves in Ontario, come to show what she is capable of doing. Senior Katie McGoff is well-known to Carter, being a product of the
Page 18
Medway/Ashland squad, which Carter coached last winter. Freshman Rory Essick, a Delaware native with the Delco Phantoms Selects, looks to get noticed. Look for sophomore Ally Decoste from Phillips Exeter to contribute. On the blue line, a pair of players from across the border will be more than capable of handling things in the defensive zone in senior Isabel Sawicki from the Brampton Canadettes and fellow senior Emily Purdy from the Vaughan Flames. Medway/Ashland’s Allison Smith will be a key blueliner, while junior Caeley Smith from the program at Taft School is adept in all ends of the ice. Emma Chaffee, a freshman-to-be at Northfield Mt. Hermon, is a welcome addition to the unit. The team has turned over the goaltending duties to a pair of quality netminders in Minnesota native Emma BarrickBenson from Hutchinson HS, and sophomore Asia Porter, who plays at Rhode Island’s Moses Brown School.

finalist last summer at HNIB, Team Central has set its sights fully on returning to the big game, and being successful this time around. Back behind the bench is Kevin Zifcak, who led his Worcester Academy team to the New England Girls D2 title this
past winter. Central has several Worcester players on its roster. One forward back is senior Micaela Sindoris, a USA U18 National Camp invitee and Northeastern commit who in leading Worcester to the title was named Girls Prep D2 Player of the Year. Worcester teammate, senior Morgan Mordini, will be another key forward for Central.

Central this summer after playing with a different club at HNIB last summer. Keep an eye on solid senior rearguard Tia Martignetti, a first team Girls Prep D2 All Star last winter. Sophomore Shannon Burke hails from the successful Austin Prep program. Look for a lot from sophomore blue liner Alexis Cagan, a Worcester Academy product. ach summer since 1995, the HNIB Girls Summer Showcase has brought together some of the premier players from the high school, prep and Junior ranks. This year’s 23rd annual event is no different as we welcome 13 teams and standouts from across New England as well as hockey hotbeds such as Minnesota and the Mid-Atlantic region. Fresh off last month’s trip to Minnesota to attend the USA Hockey U-18 Player Development Camp (which unfortunately made it impossible to attend this year’s cover shoot), Central’s Micaela Sindoris, the Worcester Academy senior forward and Charlestown, MA native has already committed to Northeastern University. “There were a few deciding factors that led to my decision to commit to Northeastern. The main one would be the coaching staff. I felt comfortable with Coach (Dave) Flint and Coach (Jeff) Pelligrini the first time we met,” Sindoris said. Sindoris earned New England Girls Prep D2 Player of The Year accolades while helping Worcester Academy to its first-ever championship last year with a 5-3 win against The Gunnery. She called the championship “my most memorable moment as a player so far.” “Winning the D2 Prep championship was the goal at the beginning of the season last year. Heading into my senior year the goal remains the same – to hopefully repeat as champions,” she said. “I do see my role as a leader expanding. As a senior I should lead by example and be available to my teammates, on and off the ice.” Sindoris admires Patrick Kane because “he plays with intensity and excels under pressure; he gives 120

percent every time he steps on the ice.” As for her own game? “I pride myself on being a solid two-way player and using my speed to back check when needed. I would like to get stronger and improve my shot,” she said. This will be her third Summer Showcase as a member of the Central team and she was an HNIB Showcase Top Forward selection last year. For Sindoris, success has resulted from (Continued On Page 24)

unwavering family support. “My mom and dad are the most influential people in my life. They have been supportive of me since the first time I stepped on the ice. My dad was my first hockey coach and my mom was my first fan. I learned the fundamentals of the game from my dad and inherited my mom's love for it. The encouragement, pep talks and criticism have brought me to where I am today. I wouldn't be here without my parents, my two older sisters and my grandmothers,” she said.
Mordini Ready For Leadership Role CENTRAL’S MICAELA SINDORIS LED WORCESTER ACADEMY TO GIRLS PREP D2 TITLE.
Her teammate this week with Central, senior forward Morgan Mordini, played a significant role as well in leading Worcester Academy to the New England Girls Prep Division 2 championship last season – the first in program history. “We were the underdogs last year throughout playoffs. We have many players returning this year so we would like to be the favorite to win the championship again this year,” said Mordini, who had five goals and 19 points for Worcester last winter and was a 2016 HNIB Showcase Team MVP pick as a member of the Central team. She understands the responsibility that comes with being a senior, saying: “I am expected to lead the underclassmen by example like the other seniors in the past. It is a great tradition Worcester Academy has had.” She cites speed, strength, and the ability to see the ice as her top attributes. Carrying the puck into the zone with purpose and improving her release are areas she is working to improve. She acknowledged those who have helped her along the way. “My parents were a big influence getting me started in hockey. All my coaches from Burrillville, RI to my coaches at Worcester Academy have influenced the way I play the game today,” she said. Mordini has the luxury of playing for her prep school coach this week, as Worcester’s Kevin Zifcak will again guide the Central squad. “Most of the team is Worcester Academy players. It is a good opportunity for us to get ready for the upcoming season,” she said. Mordini continues to sort through the college decision-making process, noting “I'm not commit(Continued On Page 25)

ted at this time but I have seen and spoken to several colleges who have contacted me.” She is interested in Business and Marketing. Attending high school while competing in the Junior Women’s Hockey League is a balancing act that requires laser focus for senior Lauren Coccoluto, back for another summer with the Jr. Shamrocks team. Coccoluto, a defenseman, understands that and appreciates the help provided by the Shamrock’ organization. “The schedule at the U19 level is very competitive and requires a great deal of traveling throughout the United States and Canada, so I have to remain focused in all areas. When I am not skating at the rink, I plan on concentrating in the classroom, while finding time to tour colleges and work through the application process,” she said. (Continued On Page 26)

“The Shamrocks work endlessly with the girls both on and off the ice to form well-rounded individuals. They offer countless opportunities to improve, whether it's working with the coaches on the ice or in the classroom with the academic coordinator or tutors,” she explained. Coccoluto admires U.S. National Team stalwart Meghan Duggan. “I have attended many hockey camps and showcases where she has been a guest speaker. She is a talented individual on the ice but even more remarkable off the ice. She has a strong work ethic and the ability to motivate people. She is someone that has proved that hard work and perseverance pays off,” said Coccoluto, a senior at Bishop Fenwick HS. She had nine goals and 33 points a year ago. How does she assess her own game? “I have speed and agility which allows me to get to the puck quickly. I am able to transition from skating backwards to forwards, and vice versa, with acceleration,” she said. “I need to move the puck off my stick quicker because in a fast-paced game like ice hockey a mere second is enough to transform an entire game.” A 5-2 February win against NAHA at The Challenge Cup in Washington, D.C. stands as her most memorable moment to date. It was the Shamrocks’ first-ever win against NAHA. “This victory was enormous for the organization as a whole and being a part of it was incredible,” she said.
She expressed gratitude for the support of her family, especially her grandfather. “My family has always supported me throughout, but one person in particular has inspired me the most, my grandfather. He has been by my side for as long as I can remember. Whether it was a practice at the local rink, or a game thousands of miles away, he was present. He always had words of encouragement to offer me. “When things didn’t go well he would remind me that there was always next time. He taught me how to learn from my mistakes and improve upon them. Without him I would not be the player that I am today,” she said. Coccoluto thinks skating for a team whose players are familiar with one another gives the Shamrocks a leg up on the competition this week. “Many of these players have had the opportunity to skate with each other at camps and various leagues like NEWHL,” she said. “From a personal standpoint I want to use the skills that I have developed over the years to play competitive hockey. It is my hope that there will be college coaches present that will see the talent that I have and show interest in taking me on as a member of their team.” She is in the midst of the college selection process and has already visited a number of schools. She hopes to pursue a degree in Nursing or Biology and work in the medical field. (Continued On Page 27)

Her Shamrocks teammate, goaltender Marina Mirabella, will be a junior at Proctor Academy in September. Mirabella stood front and center as the Shamrocks claimed the Massachusetts Tier 2 U19 State title for the first time in program history and competed for the National title in Troy, MI. Mirabella’s numbers during a nine-game regular season were otherworldly as she registered eight shutouts and allowed one goal. During the run to Nationals, she posted a .951 save percentage. “Last season the Shamrocks started off the season strong by winning the Cape Cod Storm Tournament for the third consecutive year. We also only lost one game in our regular schedule, she said, adding that the State Championship and trip to Nationals “serves a great stepping stone for the upcoming season. Mirabella admires Boston College goaltender Katie Burt, who begins her senior season at Boston College ranked fifth in career shutouts (31) and sixth in career wins (91) in NCAA history. “I look up to Katie both on and off the ice as she is a remarkable goalie and she has taught me a lot during my time at the Stop It Goaltending camps, Mirabella said. Mirabella’s success comes from her decision-making combined with her knowledge of the game, quickness, skating and her ability to “play big. She said the ongoing evolution of the position means “there is always a new technique to master. Many have had a hand in her development. “The individuals who have influenced me the most are Stephanie Wood, Bob Rotondo, Amy Zappen and Corey Cooper. Nikolopoulos Capable Of Putting Up Big Numbers (Continued From Page 27)
Amy have been my goalie coaches since I was 12 years old. Amy also coached my U14 team. Corey has helped me grow as a student athlete and as a person,” she said. She considers playing with her Shamrocks teammates an edge in the Summer Showcase. “Playing with teammates who all know each other does give the team a bit of an edge in the sense that the girls know how everyone on the team plays. The girls do not have to adjust to playing with people who they have not played with before,” she pointed out. “From a personal standpoint, I hope to remain on college coaches radars and I anticipate to catch the eyes of more college coaches.” As a junior, Mirabella still has ample time to consider her college course. She is interested in Biology and Sport Medicine. Burlington High star senior Kat Nikolopoulos is a returning champion, a big reason why the Massachusetts Public/Catholic entry won the HNIB Girls Showcase title in 2016. During the winter, she also helped power the Red Devils to the Middlesex League’s Freedom Division championship and a berth in the Division Two State Tournament last season. Along the way she piled up 34-35-69 totals and broke the program record for career goals (86 and counting) while being named Middlesex League Freedom Division MVP and a Boston Herald All-Scholastic. She is understandably eager for this season to start. “We are hoping to make another strong run in the tournament. We have a bunch of great players returning, so our experience as a team will definitely help us achieve our goals,” she said. “I definitely see myself taking on a bigger leadership role, considering I will be a senior and one of the team cap-

Mass Public/Catholic Star tains. I hope to lead the team in a positive direction and set a good example on and off the ice.” Nikolopoulos counts vision and her competitive nature as key on-ice attributes. “I am always keeping my head up to try and make the right play. My competitiveness drives me to push myself, whether during a practice or a game,” she said. “I need to improve my shot and get better at picking corners on the net. Also, I feel that I need to continue to improve my skating. I believe skating is something every player can always work on. She is a fan of the Boston Bruins’ four-time Selke Award winner Patrice Bergeron because “he is always making the little plays that go unnoticed, but have a huge impact on the team.” She credits her parents for their constant support. “My mom and dad have influenced me the most in my life. They have been with me through all of the years I have been playing hockey and helped me a lot along the way. They are the two people who have always believed in me and supported me with everything I do,” she said. This week is Nikolopoulos’s third go-round with the Mass Public/Catholic club and she anticipates another successful tournament. “I know that the team is always made up of talented and competitive players from many different schools. I hope that we can win the tournament again and gain exposure to college coaches,” said. The college selection process is starting to unfold and Nikolopoulos said she will be seeking “the best fit, both academically and athletically.” She is leaning toward a Business track.

The team this summer will feature a pair of forwards from the state of Washington in senior Siri Brett and junior Dylan Hammond. Brett plays during the winter for the Minnesota Revolution, while Hammond played with the Washington Wild last year, and heads to the TCAHA Midget program. Junior Jenna Hoff from Andover HS must be watched as well up front. New Prague HS sniper Kaitlyn Blair has been an All Conference player for two seasons. Mankato East HS product Maddie Davis is another returning forward for the squad ready to contribute in a big way. Also from Mankato East comes freshman Evelyn Johnson, looking to make her mark. Sophomore Trinity Gendron, a New Hampshire native who plays for Berlin HS, joins the club as well. On the blue line, look for senior Samantha Hunt, also from the Minnesota Revolution organization, and Mankato East HS
junior Claire Johnson to be cornerstones. A couple of locals added to the Minnesota roster are sophomore Erin Carter from Arlington Catholic, and Marlboro’s Ivy Hannon. Returning junior Andrea Schreiber from Mankato East HS, and Northfield HS standout Mallory Tidona give Team Minnesota a solid presence between the pipes.

Making his coaching debut with the team will be Ben Tefft, who has turned his Tilton School program into a playoff chal-
lenger in Girls D2 Prep. Up front, coach Tefft will look to get a lot of production from the likes of junior Julia Kibrick from the Boston Jr. Eagles program, and sophomore Rivers Morris, coming off an impressive 26-point freshman campaign at Thayer. Both are returning HNIB players.

On the blue line, juniors Mairead Kennedy from Duxbury HS and Sarah Zeidan from Newton North will be leaders for Northeast. Sophomore Darby Rich, an HNIB returner, is bound for Tilton in the fall. A fresh-
man to watch is Kristina Allard from the Assabet Red program. Both Northeast goalies will be in the rotation at Tilton School this year. Senior Allyson Joly returns with the Rams, and will be joined by newcomer Delanie Corcoran, a starter for last two seasons at Sandwich HS.

t was a pretty successful debut last summer for Team Rhode Island, making it to the semifinal round. With a lot of the same faces, this team will need to be watched. Coaching the team for a second straight summer is Kelly
Souza, the head coach at Berwick Academy. The offensive attack will be spearheaded by sophomore Mary Leys. The St. George's School product was a Top Forward Award winner at HNIB last summer. Senior Abbey Luth from Portsmouth Abbey also had a strong HNIB tournament last year.

Both goalies return, which will be a big plus. Selects Academy product has USA National Development Camp experience. Junior Emilie Limoges comes from the Potomac Lady Patriots program, as well as the Hill School. Junior Coco Klisivich is a returning HNIB Showcase player and will be
joined on the Tri-State roster by junior Carlie Van Tassel. Both players skate with the Montclair Blues organization in New Jersey. Klisivich could very well see time on the blue line for TriState. Two Massachusetts girls ready to blend in and contribute are junior Nicole Schneiders, instrumental in Westwood HS' run to the Mass D2 semifinals, and junior Liv Haley, headed off to St. George's School after being a top player for Scituate HS. Opposing defenses must keep an eye on sophomore Jess Carriocchi of the Exton Elite U16 program and Hill School. Post-grad Cannady Taleghani,
from Colorado, will join Hill School in the fall. The Tri-State defense will have a distinct Hill School flavor. Junior Jessie Hess and sophomore Kelsey Staivecki saw a lot of ice time last winter for the Blues. Sophomore Joyce Sun was also a member of the Hill rearguard contingent. Freshman Alexa Davis is strong blue liner from the Delco Phantoms organization. In goal, junior Sophie Goldberg, also a Hill School student, gives the team a USA Hockey National Development Camp tested netminder. Page 53
