HNIB’s 24th Annual Girls Summer Showcase By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB
elcome players, parents, college scouts and fans to Hockey Night in Boston’s 24th annual Girls Summer Showcase, a top-flight tournament consisting of players from over 20 different states. Last summer’s tournament saw Massachusetts Public/Catholic win its second straight HNIB title, downing Tri-State 4-1, in the championship game. This year’s Showcase will certainly boast some exciting upand-down action, as the Showcase will now field 14 teams competing for the 2018 championship: Massachusetts Preps, Massachusetts Public/Catholic, New England, Northeast, Minnesota, Mid Atlantic, Shamrocks, Eastern, Central, Metro, Rhode Island, Tri-State, Atlantic, and the newest entry, Suburban. Each team will play four first-round games, before the playoff rounds begin on Friday, August 3rd. The top two teams in each division will enter into semifinals and vie for the Girls Summer Showcase title. The remaining teams will play a cross-over game against a team in the other division that finished the first round in the same place in the standings. With the amazing growth womens hockey has seen, HNIB decided in 1995 to add the Girls Summer Showcase to its summer activities. 2018 marks the historic 44 year of HNIB’s nationally-known boys tournament, The Minnesota entry consists of a nucleus of top high school age players from the state. This summer, the team will be cocoached by Sophia Gorski and Hollywood Hermanson. The Massachusetts Preps are in their ninth summer and will be coached by Jenelle Ries from Brooks School. The same formula held true for Frank Pagliuca, the coach of St. Mary’s of Lynn, who has put together another solid club representing the Massachusetts Public/Catholic schools Under the guidance of Bob Rotondo, his organization, the Boston Jr. Shamrocks, has come up with players from his multitiered organization to form the Jr. Shamrocks team, to be coached this summer by Molly Corl. Brewster Academy head coach Maeve Connelly will coach the New England team entry, New Hotchkiss head coach Corey Cooper will man the Northeast bench, Dexter Southfield’s Maggie Taverna will guide Team Metro, and Phillips Andover

he HNIB Girls Summer Showcase has brought together some of the premier players from the high school, prep and Junior ranks each year since 1995. This year we welcome 14 teams and standouts from across New England and hockey hotbeds Minnesota and the MidAtlantic region to our 24th annual event. We introduce you to five Massachusetts players with multiple HNIB Summer Showcase appearances – Julianna Gong of St. Mark’s School and Hingham, MA; Caroline Kukas of Brooks School and North Andover, MA; Erika Lizotte of Lawrence Academy and Littleton, MA; Mady Hentosh of St. Mary’s (L) High School and Peabody, MA; and Maddie Crowley-Cahill of New Hampton and Haverhill, MA.
Mass Preps’ Gong A Leader At St. Mark’s
St. Mark’s aims to improve on its 12-13-1 record of last season. The Leadership Council’s guidance of a large group of freshmen and sophomores will be crucial to offsetting the graduation of seven seniors. “Our team has a goal of increasing our offensive output and allowing fewer shots. Everyone’s points last year were lower than projected based on previous years. The team has a small but steady returning core of veterans and our incoming players are all really strong. This year the team will be very young [but] we have the talent and need to put it together on the ice,” Gong said. Gong’s versatility stems from having started her career as a defenseman. The transition to playing forward began when she started playing club hockey. She still occasionally finds herself manning the point on the power play. “I am comfortable playing center and either wing position and have often been switched between the two at St. Mark’s and Assabet Valley. This versatility gives me the ability to step into any role a coach needs and has made me a more sound player overall,” she said. “I feel I am a strong back checker. Early on I had a coach say ‘fore check hard and back check harder’,” she recalled. “I need to improve on always moving my feet off the puck and being more open to learning new things as a player because the game is always changing and I need to be able to adjust to those changes.” Gong has learned a thing or two from her older sister Victoria. “Though she does not play anymore, she always gave 110%. That is what I incorporate into my style of play because no matter how many mistakes you make if you’re trying your very best and giving it everything you have got, you can be an impact player,” she said. Gong grew up around rinks with her younger brother watching her dad coach her older sisters and brothers. Gong continues to sort through the college selection process. She hopes to continue playing at the next level and plans to major in Business.
JULIANNA GONG - MASS PREPS
JULIANNA GONG/Mass. Preps – The senior and twotime Top Forward Award winner at HNIB scored eight goals and 16 points for St. Mark’s last season and is a key figure in a new leadership approach St. Mark’s will implement this year. “We are going to have one captain and a leadership council rather than having multiple captains. I will be serving on this council along with my fellow seniors. It will be a new concept but we have a very strong senior class who should be able to make the concept succeed,” said Gong, who skated for Assabet Valley Red Major 19U at Tier 1 Nationals in April.

Caroline Kukas Will Be At St. Anselm’s In 2019/20
CAROLINE KUKAS/Mass Preps – The reigning Division 2 Prep Player of the Year posted six shutouts for Brooks last season to go along with a 1.66 goals against average and .934 save percentage. She will continue her career at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, NH and major in Biology. Her expectations are high as she embarks on her senior year. “I hope to follow up this past season by playing stronger, by starting my last season the way this past one ended, and by playing with confidence and as a team. My goal is to be back at the Finals just like my freshman year. Unlike my first time there I want to come out on top,” Kukas said. As a primary captain, Kukas is ready to assume the leadership roles MASS PREPS GOALIE CAROLINE KUKAS WAS GIRLS PREP D2 PLAYER OF THE YEAR FOR BROOKS. associated with wearing the “C”. “The team this year will be pretty even throughout. With eight seniors playing their last year, we will have a very strong base with our rising juniors helping to develop the freshman and the sophomores,” she said. “I hope to bring the team together with the support of fellow captains Caroline Cutter and Caroline O’Keefe and the other seniors. Showing hard work on the ice and off the ice in the classroom will pay off in the long run. Making an impact on someone’s high school career also just like juniors and seniors did for me when I was an underclassman,” added Kukas, who has the ability to maintain focus while taking things one shot, one period and one game at a time. She studies goalies at all levels, especially Corey Crawford of the Chicago Blackhawks and Katie Burt of Lynn, MA who graduated from Boston College as the alltime NCAA Division One leader in wins and who recently signed a contract with the Boston Pride of the National Women’s Hockey League. “College goalies like Katie [and] other college goalies work so hard to get what they want,” she said. Older brother Christian – a standout defenseman at St. John’s Prep and Phillips Andover who will play club hockey at the University of Tampa – has been a major influence. “I always had my brother to follow when I don’t know how to handle something alone. He has been one of my biggest supporters alongside my parents, and I will miss him not being able to come to my games,” she said. The memory of that 2016 finals loss to St. George’s fuels Kukas. “Not because we lost, or that we made it to the finals, but because of the way the team comes together year after year when we play St. George’s, the way we battle every time

when we play St. George’s, the way we battle every time we see the St. George’s jersey on someone. We play like we are back in the finals three years ago,” she said. A second trip would be the perfect capper to a stellar prep career. ERIKA LIZOTTE/Eastern – A long family history and love of hockey had both Lizotte and her brother on skates by age three. This season the versatile hybrid with the proven ability to play either defense or forward will serve as the captain at Lawrence Academy. She is looking forward to the coming season and the responsibilities that come with being a captain “My freshman year we lost 11 seniors and we have been rebuilding since. We are still somewhat a young team that is developing. The addition of new teammates in the 2017-2018 season will begin to pay off this upcoming season,” Lizotte said. “I am looking forward to being a captain and continuing to develop deeper relationships with my teammates and building trust to lead us to a successful season.” Lizotte tallied five goals and 15 points as a junior and her ability to shift seamlessly between forward and defense is a valuable asset. She combines speed with vision and is focused on improving her gap control. She doesn’t study specific players but is a student of the game. “I try and take out as much as I can from watching all the amazing players in both the NHL and on the USA women’s team,” said the now three-time HNIB Summer Showcase participant.

She has been influenced by and benefited from the knowledge of many. “My dad was the one who taught me how to skate and coached me for many years. Our family skated together often and that really made me fall in love with the sport. My uncle has always inspired me to be a more physical player and I love that his passion for the sport still continues and he still plays in a men’s league every week,” Lizotte said. “I met Seth Goodrich when I was a U12 player. Seth was the first to recognize my strengths and encourage me to move from forward to defense and teach me how to be a strong defender. Seth has always supported me by allowing me to use my speed and taught me how to marry my offensive skills with my new defensive position, essentially becoming a fourth forward. Continuing to spend time working with Seth one on one is one of my favorite things to do,” she added. Surprisingly, a one-goal loss to Loomis-Chaffee in round one of the 2017 playoffs is Lizotte’s pre-eminent memory. “That was probably one of my most exciting games of my career to date. We ultimately lost with a minute left but our teamwork and focus was incredible and something I would like to model on future teams,” she said. She is spending the summer determining the right college fit both academically and athletically and hopes to remain in New England. “I am really enjoying meeting all these wonderful coaches while I try to find the right fit for me,” she said. ond-year captain as a junior. “Being a junior captain is kind of challenging since you’re not the oldest one in the locker room so last year for me was all about gaining my teammates respect and leading by example both on the ice and off the ice, she said. “This year will definitely come with more responsibility being a two-year captain so my main focus is to live up to my coaches and my teammates expectations of me both on and off the ice. St. Mary’s suffered an uncharacteristic first-round post-season exit last season. Despite that, Hentosh said the program goals remain unchanged. “I think the goals and expectations are the same every year and that’s making it to the Garden in March. It would make my senior season very memorable if we made a deep run in the tournament, she said. “We do have a pretty young team but most have varsity experience as they were in key roles last year. With another varsity year under their belt I think most of them will have even more confidence coming into this season and pick up right where we left off. She has been around the game pretty much her entire life. “My biggest influence has to be my dad (St. John’s Prep boys varsity assistant Scott Hentosh). I spent most of my early childhood in a rink either watching my brother (Kyle) play or watching my dad coach. He was the one who made that push to get me into hockey and I’m glad he did, she said. She also credits club coach Seth Goodrich for having “ a big impact on the type of player that I am, always dedicating his time whenever I wanted to shoot pucks or simply needed a question answered; and St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca for being “one of the most helpful throughout my four years. His tough love helped me improve into the player that I am. Hentosh has played on the past two HNIB Summer Showcase champions. Passing and hockey IQ are the strengths of her game. “I like being the playmaker and setting up my teammates and to me an assist is equally as good, if not better,

than a goal. I am always thinking one step ahead,” said Hentosh, who registered 6-15-21 numbers last season. “I could improve on is my speed and footwork. Pivoting and transitions are very important for defensemen and I know that mine are nowhere close to perfection.” She is a big fan of how the Bruins’ standout defenseman Charlie McAvoy plays the game. “One thing that he’s really good at is puck management. He plays a simple game, but can be crafty at times, and makes quick decisions. He may not always appear on the scoresheet but he works hard in silence and that’s the type of player that I strive to be,” Hentosh said. She hopes to add to a pair of vivid memories from her freshman year – St. Mary’s 1-0 win against Arlington Catholic that snapped AC’s 27game unbeaten streak; and a 4-3 OT win against Lexington in the State Tournament. MADDIE CROWLEY-CAHILL/Minnesota – The junior defenseman at New Hampton School has played a key role in an amazing run that has seen New Hampton rack up more than 50 wins these past two seasons, including 30-3-1 mark on the way to the 2017 New England D1 Prep championship. She is regarded as a D1 prospect. But, first things first – Crowley-Cahill is excited about the potential the upcoming season holds. Another title challenge doesn’t seem far-fetched.

MADDIE CROWLEY-CAHILL - MINNESOTA
“My goals and expectations for this upcoming year are to help lead my and have another solid playoff run in hopes of a championship,” said CrowleyCahill, who had seven goals and 22 points last season. “Our team will have a solid group of veteran experience, along with new younger players coming in to add skill. I am very excited for this upcoming season with the solid team coming into this year.” When studying players to pattern her own game after, Crowley-Cahill rarely looks beyond her teammates. “I mostly look up to my older teammates to try and push myself to become a better and more mature player. I also listen to what my coaches teach me to do and try to play my own type of game. My biggest influences in hockey are my past and present coaches, specifically Paul Kennedy, Maggie Taverna, Courtney Kennedy, Mike Mullowney, and Craig Churchill,” she said. Size, strength and puck-moving ability are Crowley-Cahill’s premier assets on the back line. She continues to work to improve her speed and to understand and control her strength. New Hampton’s 2017 NEPSAC Division One championship stands out as her favorite prep school memory. Though just a junior, the college consideration process is already under way. “College hockey is something that is a huge goal of mine. I hope to play Division One college hockey, hopefully at a Hockey East school,” said CrowleyCahill, who is interested in pursuing a degree in Business.
