ockey Night In Boston welcomes you to our 45th annual Summer Showcase being held again this year at the Valley Forum, a beautiful two-rink facility in Haverhill, MA (25 miles north of Boston). with some games slated for the Lawrence Valley Forum and the Essex Sports Center in Middleton, MA. This year’s Showcase will feature 24 teams. Action begins on Wednesday, July 24th with a unique format sure to please the scouts in attendance. Each of the 24 teams will play five games against five different opponents over a three-day period. College, Junior, Prep and NHL Scouts will be able to see prospects play two times each day on Thursday and Friday against different opponents. The nucleus of six select teams of Massachusetts /RI top players – Greater Boston, South Shore, North Shore, Middlesex, Southern NE and Central/West were chosen in April/May. Players were invited by the HNIB staff based upon their previous winter’s scholastic hockey season and HNIB participation. Remaining spots were filled from a series of Festivals HNIB held in June. The 35th annual New YorkConnecticut-Mid-Atlantic Festival from June 15-17 showed some marked growth, featuring over 120 players. The players competed for spots on two teams in the HNIB Showcase: Mid Atlantic and Connecticut/NY. Several others were chosen for at-large spots on other clubs. Over 100 skaters signed up for the 34th annual Northern New England Festival in Haverhill, MA from June 7th -9th. The result was two select teams, Northern New England and Northeast, that represent players from Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. The same weekend in June, also in Haverhill, 20-25 players were drafted from the HNIB High School Division tryout Festival for participation in the major showcase (from a turnout of 100 partcipants), including a whole Suburban entry. Nineteen teams of sophomores (over 330 players) competed in the gigantic

South Shore Flash Connolly An Offensive Dynamo COLLEGE DECISION MADE: SACRED HEART
A
By Kevin Doyle - HNIB
s he heads into his senior season at Dexter-Southfield School, Aidan Connolly does so secure in the knowledge that the college selection process has been completed. The decision-making was not taken lightly and the final choice was not arrived at easily.
ON THE COVER
“The process of committing to play at Sacred Heart University was a long decision with lots of different variables to it as well. I had to think about what I needed as a hockey player but most importantly as a student. Also I had to think of my family and what would be best for us. The decision was something I put a lot of thought into and one that I knew was right for me and for my family,” Connolly said. Connolly has been on the radar of college recruiters since bursting onto the scene with a 31-point season as a 14-year-old freshman at Marshfield High. He followed that up with 18 goals and 57 points as a sophomore at Marshfield before making the decision to leave for Dexter-Southfield, where he tallied 11 goals and 37 points as a repeat sophomore and 10 goals and 31 points as a junior. That’s 47 goals and 156 points thus far for those keeping count.
AIDAN CONNOLLY has had two solid seasons at Dexter-Southfield, piling up 68 points for the prep school power. He recently committed to play D1 hockey at Sacred Heart University.
AIDAN CONNOLLY SOUTH SHORE
“My time at Marshfield High helped me prepare myself for Dexter-Southfield in many ways. The coaches at Marshfield always pushed me in practices and in games, especially as a freshman being a 14-year-old playing against some 18- to 19-year-old seniors. Playing against older and bigger kids helped me face the bigger kids in prep hockey,” said Connolly. His father Dan Connolly is Marshfield’s long-time head coach, who led the reigning Atlantic Coast champion Rams to a Division 1A Tournament berth last year where they defeated St. Mary’s of Lynn in a play-in game before eventually bowing out in the quarterfinals. He anticipates playing a year of Junior Hockey prior to moving on to Sacred Heart, a member of the Atlantic Hockey League. “I think always playing against older kids and then playing a year of Juniors after I finish will definitely help me make the transition to Division 1 College Hockey. Academically I think I should transition well. My time at Dexter-Southfield has helped me focus on many things and it is preparing me academically for college,” he said. Connolly’s game is predicated on speed. A complete 200-foot player, Connolly’s skating, hockey IQ and responsible defensive zone play are keys to his overall game. He is spending the summer working to improve his strength in preparation for his final season at D-S. (CONTINUED ON PAGE 30)

Tim Heinke A Perfect Fit At Avon Old Farms ON THE COVER
I
TIM HEINKE TRI-STATE FORWARD
“My goal is to play Division 1 hockey,” he said. “I do know that if I am afforded the opportunity to fulfill my dream of playing Division 1, I want to play for a team that I can contribute to.” Heinke played for the Connecticut Wolfpack and Elite Hockey prior to entering Avon Old Farms as a freshman in 2017. Playing for coach Rob Gagnon’s Tri-State team this week at HNIB, the Kensington, CT native supplemented his play at Avon by skating in the fall for the well-known Neponset River Rats program out of Massachusetts, where he scored 22 points in 31 games. “When I went to play for the River Rats this past split-season, it was a little nerveracking,” Heinke said. “I was the new kid on an established team and you never know how a new presence to a team will be taken. But playing for the Rats has opened up friendships that I never would have made, given me the opportunity to play with kids from different prep schools and it is an experience I would not give up. The group of kids we had last year really gelled together and worked well both off an on the ice.”
“Putting on an Avon uniform is such a privilege.”
By Gary Demopoulos - HNIB
t was early on that Tim Heinke knew that Avon Old Farms would be the place for him once he reached high school age. Captivated by the school, which boasts as rich a prep school hockey tradition as any, Heinke, who lives in close proximity to Avon, has other reasons for wanting to attend school there and play for the hockey program. “The legacy that my uncle created at Avon was a big factor for me making my decision to attend Avon,” he said. “For me, to carry that family legacy on at a school that I have been so captivated with since I was little was also a huge factor. I knew going in, living up to my uncle’s legacy was going to be some big shoes to fill. But, it was a challenge that I wanted and do not regret doing it for one minute.” Tim’s uncle is Mike Heinke, a goaltender who played at Avon Old Farms in the late 1980s. The elder Heinke played at both Providence College and UNH and was drafted by the New Jersey Devils. A power forward who put up 14 points in an impressive sophomore campaign for the Winged Beavers, Heinke’s goal is to play Division 1 college hockey. He is well on his way of achieving that goal.
- Tim Heinke - Tri-State
TIM HEINKE IS WELL-PREPARED AVON OLD FARMS.
SEASON AT
FOR A BIG JUNIOR
Heading into his junior season at Avon, Heinke figures to have an even bigger role offensively as the Winged Beavers are slated to return four of their top five scorers. There is one area he hopes to improve on. “I want to grow into a better leader on and off the ice,” he said. “Also, to gain more confidence in my play so it will contribute to my team’s success. I think the two main areas of focus will be my patience with the
puck and also my positional play without the puck.” As most hockey fans know, Avon Old Farms has a long and storied tradition under the tutelage of veteran coach John Gardner. Two members of the Winged Beavers 16-17 team were first round draft picks in the recent NHL draft (Trevor Zegras - #9 to Anaheim, Spencer Knight - #13 to Florida). Heinke is proud to be part of that tradition. “Putting on an Avon uniform is such a privelege,” he said. “I was stepping into a legacy must greater than I knew. Not only are you playing for yourself, but you are playing for all your brothers before you who wore the AOF jersey. To be able to follow in the footsteps of so many great players that have played at Avon is something to be honored by. The fact that I am able to play for John Gardner is such an honor and privelege. He has helped shape, mold, coach so many kids into great hockey players and even better men to have that opportunity is something I consider a blessing.”

So, in watching his future team in the Minutemen, Crusberg-Roseen had the luxury of watching UMass rearguard Cale Makar, the top defenseman in college hockey and Hobey Baker Award winner. Makar also is skilled offensively. “I watched Cale Makar play a lot last year and I try to learn as much from his game as possible,” he said. “I definitely feel we play a similar game as he has a very strong offensive impact on the ice.” Early in his career, Crusberg-Roseen played for Exeter (NH) High School, and the Valley Jr. Warriors U14 program before a season with the Seacoast Spartans. Last winter, he roamed the blue line for the New Hampshire Monarchs U16 program, putting up a line of 3-13-16. This coming season, his senior year, Crusberg-Roseen will be a key part of the inaugural Selects program based at Mt. St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, RI.

Blueliner Returns To NNE For Another Summer By Gary Demopoulos - HNIB
ot long after last summer’s HNIB Major Showcase, Northern New England defenseman Cole Crusberg-Roseen announced he had committed to UMass-Amherst for his college hockey career. The Stratham, NH native was excited with his decision, but months later, after watching the Minutemen win the Hockey East title and reach the D1 National Championship game, establishing themselves as a college hockey power under head coach Greg Carvel (himself an HNIB Showcase alum), the blueliner’s excitement reached new heights. “It was unbelievable seeing teh team have so much success last year,” he said. “It made me very confident and excited about my decision to commit there. I can’t wait to be a part of such a strong program at UMass. All the coaches there are amazing and I can’t wait to being working with them.” Crusberg-Roseen has never been a stranger to the offensive side of the ice, even as a defenseman. He loves to get involved offensively and has even filled in at a forward spot if warranted.
Next Stop Will Be New Selects Program At Mt. St. Charles
“I am very excited to go to Mt. St. Charles,” he said. “I chose to play there because I believe that that is the best place for me to develop by game and get ready for the next level. The coaches there have a very good resume and have sent many players on to become stars in college and the NHL. Next year I am looking to bring my mental game to the next level and get myself prepared to make the jump to the USHL.” The blueliner did not come from a hockey family, as many of today’s players had. It was watching the sport as a youngster that got him into hockey.” “My dad used to work at UNH and every weekend we would go watch them play,” Crusberg-Roseen said. “I always enjoyed hockey because of how fast and physical it was. I think what really drew me into hockey was just the special atmosphere of the game.” Crusberg-Roseen lists Charlie McAvoy of the Boston Bruins and Erik Karlsson from San Jose as his two favorite NHL defensemen to watch.

U
niversity of Vermont-bound defenseman Jagger Benson cannot wait to begin his final year at The Tilton School – with good reason. Coach Brooks McQuade’s defending New England Prep Small School champions welcome a high-end group of PG candidates. “My expectations for this upcoming season are no different than last year, to win a title. There’s one difference though – we want the elusive Elite 8 title. We have a tremendous group coming in this season. As a team we’ve done a good job of staying in touch all summer and focusing on the team goal. We know what we need to do to accomplish this goal. We have the talent in the locker room, if we focus and execute, and stick to the blueprint we will succeed,” said Benson, a fifth-year senior who previously played at Malden Catholic. Looking back on his move to the prep school ranks, Benson recalled the transition was about as smooth as could be expected. “Within a few hours of being on campus during move-in day, I felt very welcomed. I believe that I handled the transition to prep school very well. Most of my friends were already in various prep schools before [and that] was invaluable. I knew, to a certain degree, what to expect going in [but] there were still a few surprises,” he said. Benson expressed enjoyment about the recruiting process before selecting Vermont. “I truly tried to enjoy what I could along the way. I think what led me to choosing the University of Vermont was that I felt as if I was going to truly enjoy being a hockey player for UVM. From Coach Sneddon’s and Coach Patrick’s tremendous knowledge of the game to the diehard fans that are up there in Burlington, to the rich history of the school as a hockey program, and as a great academic institution there is not a lot more you can ask for as a student athlete,” he said. He returns to skate for the Northern New England squad coached by McQuade in this weekend’s Summer Showcase. “This team is full of some talented kids who can do some great things on the ice. I think having coach McQuade on our bench is the biggest advantage of them all; he always has his players’ best interests in mind and understands what needs to be done and when. He knows how to read a situation from the bench and make the right moves. Obviously this is a summer tournament and the coaching is usually more laid back than a regular-season game but I’m sure he will be giving great advice and coaching,” said Benson, who hails from Lynnfield, MA. A superior skater, Benson is not shy about jumping into the offense, as evidenced by his 15-20-35 stat line in his first prep campaign. He also uses his strength to take care of business in the back end. “I am realistic and have big dreams. Which means with each new season I need to get better, faster, more agile, stronger – whatever you wish to accomplish, getting better has no ending,” he said. “As a player, your game always needs improvement. If you ever get to

point where you believe that you are the best [and] no more work needs to be done, you have lost your passion for the game. Having said that, I have to continue to work on my defensive zone coverage, watch film carefully, and anticipate what I will encounter while playing D. I need to be better at getting on the opposition faster.” He credits his parents and Coach McQuade as the biggest influences on his career. “If it were not for my dad, I probably would have never played hockey. He played back in the day and had a great career. He taught me everything I know when it comes to hockey and he always comes to my games. His support for me is unbelievable,” Benson said. “My mom has been my rock throughout my whole time playing hockey; no matter what she was always honest with me and pushed me to be my best. She taught me to never settle and always wanted to be better because there’s always someone working just as hard if not harder. “Coach McQuade has had a huge impact on my career in the one year that he has been my coach. ometimes you just know. That was the case for former Pope Francis standout Max Cocchi when he selected the Tilton School for his PG year. He’s headed to a championship program under the direction of coach Brooks McQuade. “Tilton has an outstanding reputation. As soon as I met Coach McQuade I knew I’d found the school I wanted to attend. The academics are of the highest level and the school is beautiful,” said Cocchi, an integral part of Pope Francis’ back-to-back Massachusetts Division 1A title game appearances the past two years. Tilton is the reigning New England Small School prep championship. Cocchi is part of an incoming PG group that will be counted on to help the Rams defend that crown. Cocchi is confident that his time at Pope Francis has prepared for this next step. “I think that I will be just fine transitioning on the (CONTINUED ON PAGE 29)

ice as well as in the classroom. I’m willing to work as hard as it takes to succeed in both areas,” he said. Cocchi returns for a second year with defending tournament champion Mass West in this week’s Summer Showcase and is hopeful of generating a college offer or two. “I think we are going to have a very strong and talented team with a great coach. As a player I hope to gain the eyes of some top-level coaches and some recognition for my hard work and heads up style of play. I hope to be a major contributor for my team,” he said. Cocchi is a pure scorer and credits his vision, elusiveness and
hockey IQ for his ability to fill the net. As a freshman and sophomore at Ludlow High School he amassed 38 goals and 28 assists. He added another 35 goals and 52 assists at Pope Francis – while playing arguably the state’s toughest schedule – eclipsing 150 career points with a 73-80-153 stat line. Cocchi said improving his defensive zone play and getting stronger will be the focal points of his off-season preparation. He hopes to play college hockey and has his eye on a number of Atlantic 10, Hockey East and NESCAC schools, including Holy Cross, UMass, Colby, Wesleyan, Sacred Heart, UNH and Babson. He called his father “my greatest influence because he sacrifices a lot for me and pushes me everyday as a player and a person to be my best.” Despite consecutive OT losses to B.C. High – last year’s 2-1 loss in a 4 OT instant classic that many consider the best game in state history; and 2018’s OT defeat – Cocchi said playing in back-to-back 1A championship games at TD Garden is an unsurpassed memory. “Playing in the Super 8 at the TD Garden two years in a row was an unbelievable experience. Also the memories and friendships that I made at Pope Francis will last a lifetime,” Cocchi said. He enjoys hanging out with friends, playing golf, fishing, and spending time with his family in his free time. The ultimate goal is clear and a strong PG year at Tilton will help to secure it. “I am looking to attend a good fouryear college with extremely strong academics and a good hockey program,” he concluded.

wouldn’t be in the position I am if it were not his care for all his players and Tilton as a whole,” he continued. “He was able to help me understand and break down the D-zone, making me a better defender while also allowing me to be as creative as I wanted to be in the offensive zone. I could not ask for a better coach to be returning to – he did whatever it took to help me along side my teammates to be our best.” He will play one year of Junior Hockey (TBD) before enrolling at Vermont for the 2020-21 academic year and hopes to make an immediate impact for the Catamounts. “ I am very excited about my future. I want to continue to get better and better at hockey and continue to work on any aca-
demics. I think I’m in a position at UVM where I will be as successful as I want to be and if I work as hard as I possibly can in these next few years, I can put myself in a very good situation. Ultimately I want to be able to call myself a professional hockey player,” he concluded. Benson retains fond memories of his time at Malden Catholic, including trip to TD Garden and the 2017 Division 1A final when he was a sophomore, but doesn’t regret the move to Tilton. “Malden Catholic was a place where I made friends that will last a lifetime,. The tremendous caring and support I received from the faculty was bar none,” the defenseman said.
Aidan Connolly To Lead South Shore (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 24)
He is looking forward to the Summer Showcase and will suit up for the South Shore squad. “The South Shore team this year should be very good with a lot of skill and speed to it as well. Personally, I want to improve on my game while playing with different kids,” Connolly said. He credits his dad as his biggest influence. “My biggest influence in my career so far would have to be my father. He got me into the game at the age of four and has never stopped teaching and pushing me to be a smarter and more complete hockey player,” Connolly said. Connolly also plays baseball at Dexter-Southfield and this summer started his own hockey skills camp for middle school aged skaters that runs for eight weeks. In his spare time he enjoys working out and playing golf, basketball, wiffle ball and tennis. He plans to study Sports Management at Sacred Heart and is hopeful of playing professional hockey if the opportunity presents itself. Looking down the road, he eventually hopes to coach or get into hockey management in the front office.

ost players would do anything to be part of a championship team during their high school/prep school careers. Northern New England forward Zach Whitehead has that beat. Although not on the varsity as a freshman, Whitehead was around a lot as Kimball Union won the 2017 New England Prep School Elite 8 crown. He then played a role both sophomore and junior years as the Wildcats won two more titles. And if KUA can go for four straight titles next March, Whitehead will be a major contributor then as well. “Watching that first championship team and seeing what it is like to win the tournament from the outside made we want nothing else but to win when I got the chance to be on the varsity and winning the past two years has been surreal,” he said. Making his HNIB debut this summer with the Northern New England squad, Whitehead put up 11 points as a sophomore for KUA. Then, during the 18-19 campaign, the 5’10” 170 lb forward had a huge role in the third straight Elite title, scoring nine goals and adding 22 assists. By Gary Demopoulos - HNIB

Why has Kimball Union been so successful? “In my opinion it all comes from the culture of the team,” Whitehead said. “Everyone has the same goal and we all push each other to make sure we’re always there at the end of the season. We also have had great leadership the past few years and a strong core of guys who trust the system and bring everyone together.” An added plus in his hockey development
is the fact that Kimball Union’s head coach is none other than Tim Whitehead, Zach’s father, who has tons of coaching experience, including stints as head coach at Hockey East Schools Maine and UMassLowell. And, it was the elder Whitehead that stoked the passion in Zach to grab a pair of skates and get out on the ice. (CONTINUED

We struggled last year with inconsistency which hurt us a lot. O’Halloran is one of a half-dozen seniors returning for veteran Coach Bob Conceison who logged regular ice time last season and will be leaned on heavily this year for their production and leadership as the Red Devils shoot for a return to the Division 1A Tournament. NNE’s Zach Whitehead Has That Champion Pedigree (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 31)
“It really has been a lot of fun because I’ve grown up surrounded by hockey,” Zach said. “I’ve been able to spend so much of my life hanging out in rinks and skating with my dad so I really grew a passion for playing and anything hockey-related. What’s it like to play for your dad? “It’s honestly not as weird or awkward as you may think and a lot of that is because the team has been such a great group of guys the past couple of years. They under-
stand it can be a little uncomfortable at times I don’t hear about it. It’s also not bad because my dad really is a great coach and the program wouldn’t have had the success it has had without him.” Whitehead, who was always the smallest guy on his team growing up, looks up to the diminutive players in the NHL. He tries to model his game after Calgary Flames star Johnny Gaudreau. The Meriden, NH resident is fully immersed in the college process.
“I’ve talked to several NESCAC schools and they all seem like really great places to play and go to school,” Whitehead said. “I want to play some junior hockey before I go to college so I have time to really figure out where is best for me.”
O’Halloran Ready For Big Showcase (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 33)
O’Halloran is skating for the newly-named New England squad (formerly Central) in this year’s Showcase that will be coached by Scot Somerville and Kevin Haggerty. “All I’m trying to get out of this tournament is to just compete and have fun,” O’Halloran said. He previously played for championships teams in HNIB’s Junior High and Sophomore tournaments in 2016 and 2017 respectively. An elite playmaker with 61 assists among his 92 career points in 70 games at Burlington, O’Halloran’s game is predicated on high end speed and he said everything feeds off that. He knows his defensive zone play requires improvement in order to compete at the next level. He scored two goals to lead the Red Devils past Newburyport, 4-1, in last season’s Division One North quarterfinal. O’Halloran has not yet decided whether he will attend Prep School or play at least one year of Junior Hockey prior to college. That decision will come soon enough and he’s keeping his college options open at this point, hopeful that a strong showing in the Showcase could generate some offers. “I just want to play college hockey at a high level somewhere,” he said. He said his family has played a major role in his development to date. “There’s a lot of people that have influenced me but the ones that stick out to me would be my dad and my two older brothers,” he noted. A multi-sport athlete, O’Halloran also plays baseball at Burlington. He won’t play football this fall, opting to prepare for his final season of hockey.

South Shore’s Hagan A 2-Sport Star
W
High-Scoring Forward Also A Football Quarterback hen the Canton (MA) HS football team fell in the MIAA Division 5 South championship game last fall, it didn’t sit well with Johnny Hagan, a hockey star for the Bulldogs who also happens to be the team’s quarterback. The slick-skating forward used that loss as motivation during the winter, putting together a banner campaign on the ice, leading this group of Bulldogs to the Massachusetts D2 state title. It was a memorable season for Canton, which went an amazing 25-0-1 en route to the title. Hagan surely did his part racking up 52 points, including a hat trick and two assists on the TD Garden’s surface in Canton’s 6-2 win over Tewksbury. “Playing at the TD Garden was an unbelievable experience, especially since it had been this team’s dream since we were mites,” Hagan said. “I guess you can say the hat trick was just the cherry on top of the win. Last season was unbelievable. Tons of fun. Definitely some-
thing we’ll all remember forever.” Canton was expected to be a top team headed into the season and certainly did not disappoint. A late-season tie with Boston Latin was the only blemish on its record. The Bulldogs outscored opponents in the postseason to the tune of 29-3. “We knew we were going to be good heading into the season, but after the comeback win against Franklin we knew we could run the table,” Hagan said. Possessing a combination of playmaking and scoring ability, Hagan makes his HNIB Showcase debut this July, skating with the South Shore team, where he projects to be an offensive leader. Hagan feels that being a playmaking forward in hockey and quarterback in football are similar in the sense that you want to be the “go-to” guy for your team. Like many top Massachusetts high school hockoey player, Hagan has received some pressure to leave Canton and go to prep school. He has chosen to return to Canton for his senior year, and feels he has some unfinished business to attend to. “We lost in the South finals in football last year and it has haunted me ever since,” Hagan said. “I want to leave Canton High with three rings.” That would mean state titles this coming school year in both football and hockey. And as a starting quarterback and highscoring forward, Hagan would be instrumental in either. At least on the hockey side, there is potential there for another state title run.
“We don’t want to be the program to win it and then fall off the map for the next year or two,” said Hagan, who certainly will revisit the prep school route for a post-graduate year. “That’s not what Canton hockey is. We are in a position to win every single year.”

Phillips Exeter Next For Arlington’s Simon
F
By Kevin Doyle - HNIB
ollowing a successful career at Arlington High School – which included unleashing the shot that set up the Spy Ponders’ winning goal when they defeated Central Catholic, 2-1, in OT to claim the Massachusetts Division 1A championship in 2017 – defenseman Jack Simon is headed to Phillips Exeter for a PG campaign. It’s a logical fit for Simon, an excellent student looking to build on the academic resume he compiled at Arlington. “I want to better learn to write, I want to branch out from Arlington, and it is the correct step towards college hockey. The opportunities afforded to Exeter students are different and more extensive, so I plan to use my resources wisely. Exeter offers school trips, smaller classes, longer office hours, a new pool of peers, and athletic facilities that are constantly available,” Simon explained. “At Arlington, I made the best of the resources I had. I dipped into the school budget for art and science projects, and developed meaningful relationships with teachers and peers. I don’t think I would have been able to appreciate Exeter’s opportunities without first learning to leave no stone unturned in public school. Although public education is criticized for large class sizes and underfunded departments, individual kids have access to equal opportunities as private school,” he added. While living on his own will be a new experience, Simon anticipates a relatively smooth transition. “My parents and past teachers have taught good study habits. I’ve been excited for months about choosing my own meals, doing my own laundry, trying to stay ahead of schoolwork, and a new pool of kids. I have a solid support group in Coach (Dana) Barbin, Coach (Tim) Mitropoulos and students who’ve been welcoming,” he said. The Middlesex League Liberty Division MVP plays a strong two-way game and excelled on the power play for Arlington, compiling 14-68-82 career totals and hopes to continue his playing career at an Ivy League or NESCAC school. He cited skating, gap control, puck handling, exploiting errors on offense and poise as his primary strengths and said he needs to improve his physicality and decision-making with the puck. He’s skating for the Middlesex squad at this year’s Summer Showcase and is looking at the tournament as a springboard to the next level. “I haven’t seen our roster yet, but I’m sure we will make a big splash. I’m confident, especially with coach Messuri, because he usually has groups poised for success. From a personal standpoint, I want to keep working towards college hockey. Also, I want to compete alongside past teammates, friends and coaches,” Simon said. Simon credits the unwavering support of his family for his success thus far. “My mom and dad have given me every opportunity, and I try to express gratitude by doing my best every day, and telling them face to face once in a while. My younger sister, Julia, and I do all our training together, whether that be summer weight room hours or improving puck handling in our unfinished basement.” he said.
JACK SIMON WAS THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER OF THE MIDDLESEX LEAGUE LIBERTY DIVISION FROM HIS BLUE LINE POSITION FOR ARLINGTON. NEXT UP IS A POST-GRAD CAMPAIGN AT PHILLIPS EXETER.

Coach Messuri has also played a significant role. “I’ve worked with coach Messuri on and off since I moved to Arlington at six years old. He’s coached me in youth sports and high school hockey, and always welcomes me into his home.” Simon said. Friday night pizza dinners at Coach Messuri’s home are among Simon’s favorite high school memories and, he said, central to Arlington’s team-first mentality. “Those Friday nights have made being a hockey player special – loyalty is why championships carry meaning into adulthood – we all have the team as a second family. There’s never a dull moment at those dinners. We politely greet Mrs. Messuri and everyone is being themselves. When it’s time to leave we’ve all ended up crying and laughing at some point during the night,” he said. Simon enjoys playing street basketball and street hockey, garage band beats and writing and plans to study humanities in college

Middlesex Ace Messuri Eyes Big Senior Year

nthony Messuri played a key role when Arlington High School upended Central Catholic, 2-1, in OT to claim the coveted 2017 Massachusetts Division 1A championship. Now, as a senior, his focus is to help the Spy Ponders return to TD Garden to play for another 1A crown on Championship Sunday in mid-March in 2020. He knows every player on the roster will have to contribute for that to happen. “It has always been that way here in Arlington. No one person on our team is treated differently than the others. The coaching staff has branded us with the mindset that no one person can ever control a hockey game, and something the coaches always try to breed here is depth. Ever since I’ve been in Arlington we have always had three or four lines that can play and make a difference in a game,” says Messuri, whose dad John Messuri is the Spy Ponders’ long-time head coach. He says the fact that players compete for playing time every day in practice lends to the reigning Middlesex League Liberty Division champion’s team-first mentality. “The coaches have never had a “first line” “second line” or (CONTINUED ON PAGE 39)

“third line”; it’s always been color coded, and just because you take the opening faceoff in one game does not mean you’re guaranteed to take it in the next. Every player here at Arlington High wants to play and make a difference, and the fact that we are always fighting for spots creates a compete level between players, which is what I think has made us able to win these past couple of years,” he explains. Messuri is a member of this year’s Middlesex team at the HNIB Showcase and enjoys the event’s format. “I want to be able to have fun and enjoy playing with players from other towns. Hockey Night has always been a favorite showcase of mine because of the way the teams are put together. In the past I’ve always played with players who are considered the enemy during the regular high school season, and it kind of forces rivalries aside as we come together to try to win the tournament. It’s an incredibly fun showcase to play in for that reason and many others,” he noted. Messuri said he hasn’t yet given much
Love For The Game Drives Anthony Messuri To Succeed
thought about the route he will take regarding hockey following his senior campaign. “A very well-known and respected college coach, whom I’m around quite a bit during the summer, once told me not to worry about early college commitments, and rather to just enjoy the moment, enjoy playing, and enjoy being around my friends,” he said. Quick and elusive on the ice, Messuri said it is his love for the game that is his biggest asset and drives him to succeed and to continue to improve. “If I would like to play at the next level, all aspects of my game need improvement. There is no one thing that I could fix that would instantly make me a better player, but rather many little things that I can improve to make myself a better player,” he said. Messuri credits his grandfather for getting him involved with the sport.
“Originally my father did not want me to play hockey because he did not want to deal with the ‘crazy hockey world’, but thankfully my Papa thought differently. When I was old enough to walk, he would sneak me out of the house and drive me down to the rink, where he would tie a scarf around my waist and pull me around. He is the reason I play hockey today and I have him to thank for all the experiences hockey has given me,” he said. He seems a bit incredulous that his senior year and final season as a Spy Ponder is already upon him.

FRAMINGHAM’S TERSONI READY FOR FUTURE CHALLENGE Greater Boston Forward Comes Off Banner Senior Year
A
By Kevin Doyle - HNIB
fter helping to lead Framingham to the 2017 Massachusetts Division One State final as a sophomore and posting big numbers as a senior, Mike Tersoni joins a high-end PG class at the Tilton School this season. The Rams won the New England Prep School Small championship last year under the direction of Coach Brooks McQuade and Tersoni said the decision to head to the North Country was relatively easy. “I wanted another year to develop academically and to better my hockey skills. After I had looked at all my options for schools, I decided that Tilton was the right fit for me. I admire the direction Coach McQuade has led the hockey program in and I’m hoping to be able to contribute to their continued success,” Tersoni explained. He understands the transition could be challenging. “Tilton will challenge me academically which was part of the reason I chose the school. As for the hockey part I think the transition may be a little slower as it’s the first time in four years I’ll be skating with a whole new team. However I’ll be playing with a lot of my Tilton teammates in the New England Fall Prep League so I don’t think I’ll have a problem adapting to the pace of play once the season finally starts,” he said. Tersoni returns to skate for Greater Boston once again in this weekend’s Summer Showcase. He hopes to further his hockey career at a college in the Northeast but will keep all of his options open. “I’m looking for a last chance to play with and against some great MIAA players and to hopefully demonstrate to any coaches that might be in attendance that I have what it takes to play at the next level,” said Tersoni, who was selected as the Bay State League’s MVP, a Shriner’s All-Star, an All-Scholastic by the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald, and Metrowest Daily News All-Star.
Fast and agile, Tersoni sees the ice well, is a prime scoring threat and is adept at delivering tape-tape passes. He tallied 42 goals and 54 assists in his final two seasons for the Flyers and surpassed 100 points for his career. He said he needs to work on positional play because “sometimes I tend to drift a little bit.” He credits his parents for their unwavering support. “Definitely my mom and dad as they have been my biggest supporters from the start, driving me everywhere and buying me all the gear,” he said.

He departs Framingham having left his mark on the program and with some indelible memories. “The best memory of playing for FHS has got to be reaching our goal this year [201819] of being chosen to play in the Super 8. We proved if you believe in the process and each other, good things will follow,” he said. “Playing in the D1 Finals at TD Garden my sophomore year is another great memory, even though we did lose to St. Mary’s. No one thought our team would make it that far.” Tersoni also spoke about one of the hottest topics in high school hockey – playing four years for your hometown school. “Some of my favorite memories from Framingham definitely come from playing hockey in Loring Arena. It’s the rink where I learned to skate with the youth hockey program – playing with some of the same kids I’d share the ice with in high school. I'm sure any hockey player can attest to this – the locker room is probably one of the best parts of hockey. The camaraderie and conversation that goes on is special. Just being able to catch up with the boys and have a good time playing the game you love is awesome,” he said.

Back to coach the club again will be John Messuri, the head coach at Mass. Super 8 participant Arlington HS. Two veterans back to power the offensive attack are senior Matt Horan, coming off an impressive season with the Jr. Monarchs U18, and Arlington HS senior Anthony Messuri, a key to the Spy Ponders offensive output.

Junior Jacob Noyes had a big hand in the great season had at Lincoln-Sudbury. Paidric Green played HS hockey in Maine this past season and has moved to the Bay State. North Andover of the MVC/Dual County League is well-represented by junior star Cole Fagan. Expect Arlington Catholic’s Carson Priante to have a big say in Suburban’s offense. The same goes for Central Catholic ace Michael Dinges. Cambridge HS gets a lot of mileage out of the play of junior Luc Denney. Junior Kyle LoNigro from St. Mary’s brings has A game to the rink each day.

Coach Bishop is very familiar with junior Sean Kelley, who plays for him at Guertin. Masconomet’s Jason Schueler, a senior and Andover’s Timmy Kobelski, a junior, will chip in on the scoresheet. Senior rock Michael Regan will be a key fixture on the blue line, coming from the solid program at Chelmsford HS. Big Bennett Souza is the lone Rhode Islander on the club, hailing from South Kingstown HS, Senior David Hassell is a mainstay at Haverhill HS. North Andover juniors Nick Herald and Tim Berube are certainly corner-
stones of the Scarlet Knights rearguard contingent. In the nets, junior Michael DelTrecco was a Sophomore All Star at HNIB last summer and ready to take over full time at Stoneham HS. Joining him in the rotation is senior Liam Dearden, a Rutland resident from the Junior Bruins program.
