HOCKEY NIGHT IN BOSTON By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB

H

ockey Night In Boston welcomes you to our historic 40th annual Summer Tournament being held again this year at the Valley Forum, a beautiful two-rink facility in Haverhill, MA (25 miles north of Boston), with a handful of games at the nearby Lawrence Valley Forum. Action in the 22-team Summer Showcase begins on Thursday, July 24th with a unique jamboree-style format sure to please the scouts in attendance. Each of the Twenty-two teams will each play 6 games against 6 different opponents over a four-day period. College and NHL Scouts will be able to see prospects play two times each day on Friday and Saturday against different opponents. Four select teams of Massachusetts /RI top players – Greater Boston, South Shore/RI, North Shore, Middlesex/Merrimack _ were chosen in April/May. Players were invited by the HNIB staff based upon their previous winter’s scholastic hockey season. The 31st annual New YorkConnecticut-Mid-Atlantic camp featuring over 90 players took place from June 1315. The players competed for spots on two teams in the South Division: Mid Atlantic and Connecticut/NY. HNIB Mid-West Director John Malloy conducted the 25th annual camp in Ann Arbor, MI (June 27-29) to select a major team for this showcase. The Midwest teams will feature players from many Midwestern states. Over 90 skaters signed up for the 30th annual Northern New England camp in Haverhill, MA from June 6th -8th. The result was two select teams, Northern New England and Northeast, that represent players from Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Early in July, 50 players were drafted from the HNIB High School Division tryouts for participation in the major showcase (from a turnout of 150 partcipants), including a Suburban entry. Eighteen teams of sophomores (over 300 players) competed in the gigantic and unique HNIB Sophomore All-Star Tournament from July 13-18. Also,

Historic 40th Annual Showcase 200 junior high players participated in their own festival as a stepping stone to their initial exposure at HNIB. The final 40 Sophomore All Stars were chosen after their AllStar Games on July 18th. Returning at HNIB this summer are two major teams representing South Florida (Tim Kyrkostas), and the Philadelphia area (Charlie Pens). Both should be contenders. Also returning for a second year is a team from Long Island. Mass West is back with a nice nucleus of young talent. Metro per-

formed quite well in its baptism last summer and will be a team to watch. East Coast is hoping to challenge in the West Division. Team Minnesota will be a tough team to beat. This summer HNIB welcomes three new clubs including a team of up-and-comers from the Atlanta area. Mick Lafata has put together a solid Eastern club with players who have had past success at HNIB at the Junior High and Sophomore levels. Another new entry is Central, put together by Jon Fontas of The Hockey Academy.

- In Memoriam HNIB Owner/co-Founder P. Lance LoFaro (1946-2014)

T

he entire Hockey Night In Boston staff is sad to announce the death of company co-founder and owner P. Lance LoFaro, who passed away over the holiday weekend on July 5th, 2014. Lance LoFaro founded HNIB along with partner Darby Yaeger back in 1972 when they started broadcasting local high school games on the radio. That blossomed into a television highlights show that was widely viewed by Massachusetts HS hockey players and fans. In 1974, the first HNIB Summer Showcase debuted, with four teams of local HS stars participating. The tournament grew fast into a National event, with players from all over the country traveling to the Boston area. It is known as the “grandfather of Summer Showcases, of which there are now many. This 2014 HNIB’s Boys Major Showcase will mark the 40th Anniversary of the event.

Lance LoFaro (c) with HNIB Staffers Jamie Callery (l) and Gary Demopoulos (r) back in 2011 in front of Boston Bruins locker room at TD Garden.

P. Lance LoFaro HNIB co-founder/owner 1946-2014

LoFaro and Yaeger put together a Sophomore All Star Tournament in the early 1980s that featured top players entering their Sophomore year of high school that fall. HNIB’s 34th Annual Sophomore All Star Tournament was recently held July 13-18. Under LoFaro’s direction, HNIB also started a women’s Hockey Night In Boston Showcase in 1995 and a Junior High Festival in 2002. The 2014 Junior High Festival was held concurrent with the Sophomore Tournament from July 1318, while the 20th Annual Women’s Showcase will run from August 6-10. LoFaro was also instrumental in starting a Scholastic Hockey newspaper – the HNIB News, which this past season celebrated its 30th year and is read all over New England.

Middlesex/Merrimack’s Sodergren Set For Captain’s Role At St. Paul’s

A

By Kevin Doyle • HNIB

s he participates for Middlesex/Merrimack in this week’s Summer Showcase, Connor Sodergren is already focused on the coming season at St. Paul’s, which compiled a 20-9-1 record last season. After losing in the Martin/Earl New England title game, Sodergren says the goals are higher this time around. “The goal heading into this year is to qualify for the Elite Eight. If we continue to grind out games and work together as a team, we will win more games than last year,” Sodergren says. As a captain, he expects to shoulder a larger leadership role. “I know the responsibilities already and I know that I have the support of my teammates on every decision I make,” he says. Sodergren put up impressive 17-28-45 numbers last season en route to being an All-ISL selection, and patterns his heavy game after the way his older brother played. “Whatever he did on the ice I wanted to mimic but add in a little twist to make it better. His strength on the ice was his physical play and without watching how he did it, till this day, I wouldn’t have the confidence to play physical. My strength today is knocking people off the puck,” explains the rugged 6-0, 185-pounder. He admires Bruins’ Selke Award winner Patrice Bergeron, the NHL’s premier two-way forward. “He sees the ice very well and plays both ends of the ice. He plays the penalty kill and the power play. He’s an all-around player and I think he fits my playing style the most,” Sodergren says. Sodergren’s versatility was apparent as a freshman when, because of injuries, he shifted back to defense in the Avon Christmas Classic. Irving Closes Out Prolific Beverly Career With D-2 State Title

North Shore’s’ Connor Irving, headed for a PG year at Tilton, became Beverly’s all-time leading scorer this past winter..

n the grand scheme of things, it seemed fitting that Connor Irving scored the biggest goal in Beverly High School hockey history, delivering the program’s first Massachusetts State Championship at TD Garden in mid-March. All square with Medfield, 1-1, early in the third period of a tense Division Two title match, Irving’s backhander into the crease caromed off the stick of a Medfield defenseman and over the goalie, the decisive strike in an eventual 2-1 win. Certainly not the prettiest goal of Irving’s mercurial four-year career but what’s that they say about making your own luck? He reflected on that moment. “There was no greater feeling then seeing that puck cross the goal line. Personally scoring the game-winning goal in the State Championship game means a lot to me but it was a team effort and we all did it together with all the time we put in on and off the ice,” said Irving, who’s off for a post-grad year at Tilton

School under the tutelage of Pat Norton. “Everyone bought into what coach (Bob) Gilligan was saying. It was even better to get it done with the kids I have been playing with all my life, we grew up playing together since we were Mites and I couldn't have asked for a better ending to our Beverly hockey career. I am really grateful to have such a good class,” Irving said. Gilligan – asked to take over a program in turmoil midway through the season 11 years ago – is a two-time cancer survivor who announced his retirement in early June. Irving and his mates were not to be deterred in their quest to win a State title for their coach. The championship capped a remarkable 22-1-1 season that included a 5-1-0 mark against Division One schools. “It meant a lot to win it for coach because of everything that he had been through and endured – we knew how hard he battled and we wanted to battle and win it for him,” Irving said. .C. High standout Pat Kramer heads into his senior season with the pressure of the recruiting game already behind him. He is already committed to Merrimack College for the Fall of 2016, preceded by a year of extra seasoning with the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL.

Pat Kramer • South Shore/RI BC High Product Committed to Merrimack

Forward Committed To Merrimack For 2016 “Playing Hockey East has always been a goal for me. Having the opportunity to play for the Merrimack coaching staff made the decision easy,” said Kramer of Bridgewater, MA. The rangy 6-2, 185-pounder ranks among the Catholic Conference’s elite forwards and put up 1721-38 totals a year ago as the Eagles finished 16-3-4, captured the Catholic Conference championship and advanced to the semifinal round of the Division 1A Tournament, falling to Austin Prep in a shootout, 2-1. Returning to the 1A is a goal for Kramer and a large group of BCH returnees. “The key to getting back to the Super 8 will be getting the quality senior leadership we had on the team last two years. Another key to a successful year will be playing to our strengths as a team and not as individuals. This is something we have done well since I’ve been on the team,” said Kramer, adding “as a senior I look forward to taking more of a leadership role along with my fellow senior classmates.” Kramer considers his ability to finish and vision that allows him to create opportunities for himself and his teammates as his primary assets on the ice. However, he is in no way satisfied. “To take it to the next level I would like to improve on all areas of my game. Two areas I would put on top of the list would be doing a better job at face-offs and helping my defensemen down low in the D-zone,” said Kramer, a big admirer of 18-year-old Colorado Avalanche phenom Nathan MacKinnon. Kramer said his top hockey memory at the moment is the most recent – helping B.C. High to win its first Catholic Conference championship in seven years. He said his Cape Cod Whalers U16 coaches (Ted Donato and Tim Sweeney) have been instrumental in his overall development. (Continued On Page 30)

As a senior, Kacz said he’s ready to help lead the way. “I plan on taking a larger leadership role on the ice and off the ice as well. Seeing what the leaders did to help me at Cushing has really encouraged me to step up and push the team toward our goals,” he explained. Kacz prides himself on his defensive positioning, stick skills, aggressive play, passing, and communication. “These strengths have helped me get to where I am today and I am always working on improving them whenever I touch the ice,” he said. “I need to improve my offensive skills. There are times when I should take my ice or move up with the play to help our team develop a better scoring opportunity. I need to learn how to read the rush better so I can jump in the play and help my team.” He is partial to LA Kings defenseman Drew Doughty. “He is an exciting player and it’s amazing how he controls the game from the defensive side of the ice. He never runs out of energy and will do whatever it takes to win for his team which makes him one of the elite players in the NHL,” Kacz said. He looks back at his first high school game at Moses Brown, in which he scored a goal and had two assists, as his most memorable moment to date. Kacz credits his parents for their support and encouragement while enabling him and his siblings to succeed academically and athletically. Among coaches, he cites Tim Lovell of the Boston Advantage and Pat Desir, formerly of the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers, for their roles in his on-ice development. Kacz is hoping to attend a college that combines a great finance or architectural department with a strong hockey program. “I am looking for a college that suits me and is a place where I can better myself as a person and an athlete,” he said. “I am going to work hard this summer and throughout my senior year to open additional opportunities for me. I do know there are some schools that have shown interest in me through coach Gagnon,” he said.

(Continued From Page 27)

These coaches really helped me understand to value of playing hard and competing during practices. I learned that practicing at full speed can [help] just as [much] developing as playing hard during a game,” he said. Although he doesn’t know much about the South Shore-Rhode Island team, he is looking forward to playing with different players.

North’s Irving Bound For Tilton (Continued From Page 26)

Tilton was Irving’s final prep visit but the school discussed the most when decision time arrived. He’s excited about the opportunity to play for Norton. “Coach Norton seems like a great coach and Tilton seemed like the right fit for me next year. I loved the campus and the rink,” Irving said. “Tilton seemed like it was the right school and the best one to get me to the next level.” Irving – the nephew of former U.S. Olympian and long-time Merrimack College assistant coach Stu Irving – graduated as Beverly’s all-time leading scorer (74-122-196). A superb passer with great on-ice awareness, he brings a refined, speed-based offensive game to Tilton. It is no surprise that his favorite NHL player is Sidney Crosby. “Some of the things he does on the ice are unbelievable and it’s really fun to watch. He plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played,” Irving said. He is well aware of the areas of his game that need to improve. “I hope to become more of a complete player at Tilton and work on my game in the defensive zone as well as the offensive zone. To take it to the next level I need to get physically stronger,” he said. Irving expects this year’s North Shore team – which includes his former Beverly High teammates - defensemen Nick Albano and Jack Morency, and goaltender Tim Birarelli – will be a hard-working, competitive group to be reckoned with during the Summer Showcase. Irving plans to enroll in college for the 2015-16 academic year. He has not made a college choice but is “hoping to play at the highest level that I can. I would prefer it to be in New England.”

South/RI’s Kramer Key For BC High “Helping the team be successful during the tournament would be rewarding enough for me,” Kramer said. Not to mention serving as a springboard to the high school season as B.C. High chases its first 1A title since 2007 (fifth overall).

Sodergren A Force For St. Paul’s (Continued From Page 25)

“Coach came up to me and said ‘Have you ever played defense before?’ and for two games, I played defense including the championship game where we beat Avon. It meant a lot to me that coach trusted me on defense,” Sodergren says. As he looks to the next level, developing a quicker release and becoming more effective at shooting in stride are Sodergren’s top priorities. He’s looking forward to this tournament for a number of reasons. “I know that the coach (Bill Flanagan) is a great guy and I am excited to play for him. I also know that I’ll be playing with my teammate from St. Paul’s Cam Bando, who I hope to get an assist on at least one of his goals. I hope to play with some players I have never played with before and see how I can adapt with them and how the chemistry builds up,” he says. He understands his goal of playing Division One college hockey coming directly out of high school is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve and will likely play a year of Juniors. “I have not made a decision regarding college yet. My preference is to play Division One hockey but, at the same, be academically challenged as well,” he says.

Albano takes great pride in being a member of the team that delivered a State title for recentlyretired coach Bob Gilligan, a two-time cancer survivor. “It was an unbelievable moment for him especially with all he has gone through. Never once did he feel sorry for himself; it was always positive and he led by example. For him to go out on top meant the world to all of us, and probably most of the city of Beverly as well,” Albano said. He only recently settled on transitioning from Beverly to Proctor. Albano initially visited the school during April Vacation at the suggestion of Walpole Express coach Jon Lounsberry. “I met with Coach (Mike) Walsh and Coach (Tucker) Prudden, the lacrosse coach, and really liked the school. We accepted after touring one more time. It will be hard to leave Beverly and my friends, but I am really looking forward to Proctor. Plus, I still get to play against (former Beverly teammates) Connor Irving and Jack Morency when we play Tilton,” Albano said. (Continued On Page 35)

ne thing opponents of the North Shore are sure to notice during this week’s Summer Showcase is that defenseman Nick Albano is every bit adept at initiating offense at one end as he is stifling it at the other. Albano is headed for Proctor Academy as a senior after a school record-setting season in which he clicked for eight goals and 46 points and played a starring role as Beverly High School claimed the first Massachusetts Division 2 State Championship in program history. “Winning the State Championship was an amazing feeling -- we worked so hard during the season, it was nice to see it pay off. I dreamed about getting a ring and when the time came it didn't feel real, but I was glad to share it with such a good group of kids,” said Albano, joined on this team by his former

South Florida Vets Eye Repeat Title Run

Jake Simons (l) and Joe Richardson (r) - Two of South Florida’s top hockey prospects.

lashy Cushing Academy senior forward Jake Simons of Coral Springs, FL returns to the Summer Showcase this week looking to help South Florida capture its second consecutive championship under the guidance of coach Tim Kyrkostas. “I don't know who is on the team, but Coach Tim always has a competitive team and I'm sure this year will be the same,” said Simons, one of four MVPs at last year’s Summer Showcase when he rang up six goals and 15 points in nine games to rank fourth overall in tournament scoring. That offensive proficiency carried over into the regular season as he went on to rank as Cushing’s second-leading scorer last winter with 21 goals and 46 points to help the Penguins reach the quarterfinal round of the Prep/Tournament.

hnIB PrOfIle SerIeS At 5-7, 160 pounds, Simons counts on abundant skill and guile to succeed on the ice. His ability to scan the ice allows him to find the open man but he added he must continue to work on improving his speed. It comes as no surprise that he’s a big fan of the diminutive Martin St. Louis, one of the NHL’s most effective forwards, who went undrafted out of the University of Vermont but has amassed 981 points in 1,060 career games. “He is a smaller player but able to have a big role in the NHL,” Simons said. Much like his Cushing teammates playing on other teams this week, Simons thinks the Pens could be on the verge of a special season under coach Rob Gagnon, who’s steering the South Shore/Rhode Island squad this week. Richardson Will Play WIth PAL Islanders This Season

outh Florida defenseman Joseph Richardson arrived at this week’s Summer Showcase with a very clear goal in mind – annexing another HNIB championship for the South Florida franchise. “I am looking to contribute in whatever way my team needs me to bring the title back down to South Florida, said Richardson, an HNIB Top Defenseman award winner in 2013. “We are bringing up another very strong team with a lot of HNIB veterans and we expect to win. Anything else will be a disappointment. Make no mistake – winning a tournament stocked with teams from hockey tradition-rich areas such as the Northeast, MidAtlantic and Midwest is a huge deal for squads from the Sun Belt. “My most memorable moment was probably winning the HNIB Showcase last year. It is a huge help for the developing hockey community in South Florida when they can go up and compete against top-end Northeast teams, said Richardson, a stalwart defenseman for the Palm Beach Blackhawks this past season in USPHL’s Elite Division, where he was coached by South Florida mentor Tim Kyrkostas. Richardson will transition to the PAL Islanders in the USPHL’s Premier Division this coming season, a move made with career advancement in mind. “My decision came down to the coaches knowing what it takes to move players to next level and being willing to do what

it takes to make that happen, he said. “Also the Premier league fits my style of play and seemed like the best option to showcase my talents in front of Northeastern schools. He cites skating, consistency and ability to lock down in 1-on1 situations as strengths of his game. He hopes to improve his shot and overall speed and has been hard at work in the weight room. Richardson is a fan of the Florida Panthers’ Brian Campbell “because I feel my game is similar to his in the fact that he isn’t afraid to hop into the rush but will also be the first one back in the defensive zone. Richard said he isn’t flustered by the occasionally frenetic pace of the games in the Summer Showcase where everyone is pushing the pace and it seems defense is often an afterthought. “I feel like that is when you need to stick to your game the most. If there is an opening I’ll take the puck up but keeping everyone accountable to their job and their job only is what contributes to a team win and eventually another championship, he pointed out. He said his parents, Kyrkostas and the entire Palm Beach staff have played key roles in his development. “Coach Tim not only taught me how to be a better hockey player but a better man. He emphasized accountability and leadership the two years I was with him at the Palm Beach Hawks, Richardson explained. He remains undecided about college but has always wanted to play in the Northeast, at a Hockey East or ECAC school.

South Florida’s Jake Simons Keys Cushing Attack (Continued From Page 32)

“The goal this year is to win the Prep/Elite championship. We just need to stay a little more focused and stay the course, he said. “After a year of playing prep hockey and knowing what it takes, I feel like I can have an effective leadership role. To date, Simons’ fondest hockey memory was qualifying for Nationals with his U16 AA travel team. He began playing

hockey at age three and was coached until he was a PeeWee by his dad, whose advice was simple and sound: “He always told me to go out and try my hardest. Upon graduation from Cushing, Simons will play at least one year of Junior hockey. While he has expressed an interest in playing Hockey East, he has not made a decision regarding college and remains open to all possibilities.

North’s Markell Excels In Both Ends

s one of the captains of the Middlesex School squad for the upcoming Independent School League season, senior defenseman Harrison Markell has a firm grasp of the job ahead of him what his role will entail. “Personally, I would like to be a leader for the team on and off the ice. I want to bring solid

defense and offense when I can to help contribute. Off the ice I would like to lead by example in all aspects of school and hockey,” said Markell, who hails from Andover, MA. It’s a responsibility he’ll share with his friend and Brown commit Eric Shaw. “We would like to work together to form a strong leadership core along with the other seniors,” Markell said. (Continued On Page 35)

North Shore Defenseman Harrison Markell

Markell Leads On, Off Ice For Middlesex (Continued From Page 34)

At 6-1, 187 pounds, Markell cites an active stick, hockey sense, and the ability to transition the puck quickly to his forwards as his greatest strengths. “Two things I continue to work on are my skating, specifically lateral movement and economy of motion, and I could benefit from increased poise and confidence with the puck when the pace of play quickens at higher levels,” he said. As a Bruins’ fan he is able to set aside his inherent dislike of Montreal and admire the play of Canadiens’ defenseman P.K. Subban. “I do not like his occasional embellishment, but his skating ability, skill, and finally his compete level make him fun to watch. I was lucky enough to see him live in the playoffs and he is a workhorse that affects the game every time he is on the ice,” Markell said. A long-time member of the Valley Jr. Warriors program housed right here in Haverhill, Markell is proud to have played on the Warriors’ U12, U14 and U16 teams that reached the USA Hockey Nationals.

“I have great relationships with all the players on the team and it was awesome to get to hang out with them and play some quality hockey as well,” he said. That connection to the Valley Jr. Warriors will deepen at this week’s Summer Showcase as the North Shore squad will be coached Andy Heinze, the Valley Jr. Warriors’ Director of Hockey Operations and their Eastern Hockey League head coach/GM. “I am extremely excited to play under coach Heinze. He is a wellrespected coach and I look forward to learning from him,” said Markell, who listed coaches such as Steve MacAdams, Tom Fitzgerald, Joe Mallen, and Jimmy Mirageas among those who have been influential in his career development. A draft choice of the United States Hockey League’s Waterloo Blackhawks, Markell plans on a year of Junior Hockey prior to college and thinks Waterloo would provide a terrific opportunity to enhance his overall game. “I would love to play Division 1 hockey and I see myself playing in the ECAC, hopefully at an Ivy League school,” he concluded.

North’s Albano Will Choose Between Hockey, Lacrosse (Continued From Page 31)

Rangy at 6-1, 165 pounds, Albano is a fan of the Bruins’ Tori Krug, a puck-moving specialist. Albano reads the play well at both ends of the ice and considers puck movement his biggest strength while continually working to improve both his speed and his shot. Albano is looking forward to renewing acquaintances with members of the North Shore squad this week. “I remember most of the guys on the team, a lot of my friends, so it will be a good time to catch up with them and to get better,” he said. As a highly-regarded lacrosse player, may have to choose which sport to play in college. “I have been offered scholarships from some schools for lacrosse, so if I have the opportunity to play either one in college, that will be great. I love being part of a team,” he said.

t. Paul’s senior defenseman Cam Bando is looking forward to the opportunity to play for Middlesex-Merrimack in this week’s Summer Showcase for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the opportunity to play for Coach Bill Flanagan. “Coach Flanagan was my older brother’s junior coach. My brother had nothing but the best things to say about him so I’m thrilled that I am going to be able to play for him,” Bando says. “Hockey Night in Boston has always had a great reputation and I am excited to get exposure to college coaches as well as excelling as a team and individually in the tournament.”

“Last year was so successful because of the determination and dedication our team had day in and day out.” - Cam Bando on his St. Paul’s team Like his St. Paul’s and Middlesex/Merrimack teammate Connor Sodergren, Bando is looking for St. Paul’s to build upon last year’s Martin/Earl title game appearance and 20-9-1 record. “Last year was so successful because of the determination and dedication our team had day in and day out. We focused on the things that mattered at the time, which was winning the period we were in and then taking the rest from there. We plan to play with the same mentality this year,” Bando says. “As one of seven seniors and an assistant captain, our goal is to set the example for the younger players. Once we can get the younger guys to buy into our system, we will be a very successful team,” he continues. His favorite hockey memory? Last year’s semifinal playoff win in the Large School Tournament. “After the win, a combination of extreme excitement and focus lingered on the bus ride and it was a bonding experience with my team I will never forget,” he said. Bando admires Bruins’ all-time great Ray Bourque. “He had one of the best compete levels I’ve ever seen in a hockey player. He was also an offensive and defensive powerhouse,” he says. He credits his family for his success on and off the ice, saying “their countless support has affected me so greatly and I wouldn’t be anywhere without them.”

Cam Bando • Middlesex Merrimack Rearguard Steady Defender For St. Paul’s

As he looks to move forward with his career, Bando feels he must be faster in all phases of the game including his thought process, shot, and skating. He plans to play at least one season of Junior hockey to enhance his chances to play college hockey at the highest possible level. “I am still very open-minded about my college preferences so far. Of course, my goal is to reach the Division One level. However, whether it is at the Division One or Three level, I plan to go to a college that will give me a great education and set me up for success in the future,” he said.

Snow Looks For Positive Transition Greater Boston Forward Moves To U-18 Islanders

he coming season will be another one of transition for Greater Boston center man Mike Snow, who has left Lawrence Academy in favor of the U18 Islanders program housed at Merrimack College. His goal is to make the Isles’ Eastern Hockey League team for the 2015-

16 season. Snow arrived at Lawrence after a strong freshman season at Arlington Catholic when he finished with eight goals and 21 points. This past season, his second at Lawrence, he notched nine goals and 27 total points. The move to Junior hockey represents the next logical step in his development.

“Working my way up to varsity at AC and playing first line made the transition (to Lawrence) easier than I expected but I was still not entirely prepared. I was blown away at the prep school level and it took a little time to get into the swing of things. I feel that during this last season I hit my stride and played pretty well,” Snow said. At five feet, nine inches and 165 pounds, Snow knows he has to rely on speed and elusiveness to succeed.

“One area of my game I have to improve to make it to the next level is my speed. Keeping my feet moving at all times is something that I am dedicating my time to this off season,” he said. “As for my expectations (at the Summer Showcase), I hope to have a good tournament and to have fun.” Snow is an unabashed admirer of Hall of Famer Joe Sakic, who spent his entire 21-year career with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise. “I love the way he played the game and he was a true leader on and off the ice. He is a player that I try to model my game after,” he said. Snow already has a couple of lasting memories. Following his freshman season at Lawrence, he was asked by Belmont Hill coaches to play in an International U16 Tournament in Amsterdam and was one of three forwards named to the tournament All-Star team. From a team standpoint, it definitely opened up the eyes of anyone watching Massachusetts high school hockey. It proved that you can accomplish anything with hard work, teamwork and heart,” Siebold said. “Winning the State Championship was incredible.” With 27 asssists, Siebold emerged as an elite triggerman for the Rockets’ resurgent offense, which tallied 53 goals during its closing run. He cites his vision and quickness as the strengths of his game and is a big fan of former San Jose Sharks’ defenseman Dan Boyle, recently signed by the New York Rangers. “He moves the puck well and can take it by himself if he wants to. He has instilled a strong work ethic in me,” Siebold said. “Brian Daccord basically taught me defense and systems and where to be on the ice and why. He’s made me a smarter player. He was a great teacher and I have great respect for him.” Siebold said he is excited about his senior season and the opportunities that may arise. He will most likely play Junior hockey upon graduation from Reading. “My goal is to play at the highest possible level (in college). I would prefer to stay in the New England area. I would like to play at a school that has a strong alumni network. I am looking forward to exploring my options,” he said. What’s the outlook at Reading? “I see myself having expanded leadership. This will be my third year on the varsity team. Last year I was the only returning defenseman. I will continue to work hard, and push my teammates to do the same,” he said.

Snow A Greater Boston Key (Continued From Page 37)

This past season, during the Lawrence AcademyGroton Holiday Tournament, he essentially shadowed recent Boston Bruins’ second-round draft pick Ryan Donato throughout an 8-7 overtime loss to Dexter. “I think there were two shifts all game we weren’t on the ice together. Ryan is a fantastic player and it is difficult keeping up with him. I was fortunate enough to pick up a few points but playing against and trying to cover a potential first-round pick was very memorable,” he said. Snow credits his parents, sister, friends, coaches Steve McAdams, Steve Armstrong and Kevin Potter, and trainer Billy Gore for his success to date. While he won’t be back at Lawrence this winter, he anticipates LA will have a skilled, gritty team prepared to grind down its opponents. Snow has no specific college in mind at this point but is certain that Hockey East is a definite goal. “I grew up going to the Hockey East playoffs at The Garden,” he said, “but playing at a school in the Midwest would also be great.”

at Horrocks will require zero time to familiarize himself with his South Shore-Rhode Island coach at this week’s Summer Showcase, as he’ll be playing for Rob Gagnon, his coach at Cushing Academy, for the second straight year.

South/RI’s Pat Horrocks • Cushing Rock

Cushing enjoyed a strong season last winter, advancing to the Prep/Elite Tournament quarterfinals. However, Horrocks wants more this winter and hopes the Showcase serves as a jumping off point for a memorable finish next March. “Our goal every year is to not just make the Elite 8 but to win it. We want to walk away New England champions. It is a common goal of everyone on our team. With hard work on the ice, in the weight room, and in the classroom, we will achieve our goal,” Horrocks said. “It will definitely be a fun week playing for Coach Gags and some of the boys from last year. I don’t know much about our team but I’m sure we’ll be competitive. I’m looking forward to getting on the ice and maybe taking home the hardware in the Showcase,” he added. Success is most often born of failure and Horrocks’ most memorable moment – and driving force for this coming season – is last year’s double OT quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Salisbury. “The feeling of that defeat has made me even hungrier to succeed. To end a season in the way we did makes me want to get back on the ice. I think that loss made us, as a team, realize what we have to do to win,” he explained. Horrocks is a major admirer of the Bruins’ Selke Award-winning forward Patrice Bergeron. “His heart and grit are unmatched – I think he is the best two-way forward there is,” he said. Horrocks cites his skating ability, poise with the puck, and vision as the strengths of his game. “I try to use my vision across the ice before making a play. With my trust in my skating it gives me the option to be patient with the puck because I know, if need be, I can bail myself out of a tight situation,” he said. He is also well aware of the areas that need to be worked on. “At times I am too hesitant on both sides of the puck. Whether it is pinching down the boards, or trying to make a tough pass, I over-think my decision and shy away from the play. I need to rally just trust my instincts and play more aggressively,” he said. He praised his father as the major influence on his career. (Continued On Page 42)

Steeves Ready For EHL Monarchs Challenge By Kevin Doyle • HNIB

T

he decision for Northern New England forward Matt Steeves to play in the New Hampshire Monarchs organization rather than attend prep school was not a difficult one, not with one of New England’s premier Junior program located less than a halfhour from home in Bedford, NH.

Forward Part Of Potent NNE Lineup

“I think this is a very good place for my development and I am very excited to be staying with the program and playing at its highest level. The Monarchs are a great organization and I have really enjoyed my time playing for them and look forward to continuing to play there next season,” he said. Steeves categorizes himself as a power forward who likes to battle for the puck, uses his strength to his advantage, and possesses and accurate shot. He said his speed and explosiveness would require continual work as his career advances. “Especially for a bigger player like myself it is necessary to - Matt Steeves continue working on skating to keep up with the play and be “There were several factors. able to get that extra push that The most influential would separates yourself from a probably be the convenience defender and gets you time and of playing close to home. space to make plays with the Being on the Monarchs, I am puck,” he said. able to make it to the rink from He tries to model his game my house in 20 minutes makafter Corey Perry “by using ing it easy to get to practices puck protection skills to mainand games. He is looking forward to this week’s Summer Showcase as a member of the Northern New England team coached by Mike Addesa. Steeves will join Monarchs’ friends and teammates Chad L'Heureux and Liam O'Sullivan and a number of players he has played with in the past.

“He pushed me to succeed at all levels, not only in hockey, but in other sports and especially in school. He is always there for guidance and help if I need it and there to correct me when I’m wrong. From the early days of waking up at the crack of dawn to bring me to practice or a game he has been there every step of the way. I can’t thank him enough,” Horrocks said. As for next steps, Horrocks would prefer a direct path to college but understands Juniors is a more likely option and will embrace the opportunity. He has not yet made a college commitment. “I would like to stay somewhat close to home, but given an opportunity to play anywhere in college, I would not pass it up. It is a goal of mine to play at the next level and I’m working hard every day to achieve it,” he concluded.

Steeves Looks Forward To Showcase “I know Coach Addesa is a very wellconnected person in the hockey world as well as a very knowledgeable and successful coach,” Steeves said. “In terms of my expectations for the showcase, I hope to be challenged playing a high level of hockey as well as to gain attention from colleges attending the event.” While college is at least two years distant, Steeves is definite in his desire to play at the highest possible level at a school that combines strong academics with successful hockey. “It is a dream of mine to some day win a

National Championship. Although hockey is extremely important to me, I am also a very dedicated student and want to attend a school that will allow me to pursue a future in both hockey and an education. Any schools that combine those core values draw my attention and would be desirable places to end up,” he said.

North’s Shore’s Pat Daly An Offensive Force To Reckon With While his on-ice strengths are readily apparent, Daly said he can improve across the board as he prepares for the next level. “Everybody can always get better in every facet of their game and I’m no different. I need to focus on my strength, puck handling, shooting accuracy, and a few other things to really get where I want to be. I will continue to work on these aspects of game, along with everything else because you can never stop improving,” he noted.

resh off a strong 2013-2014 campaign, Pat Daly of Hamilton, MA embarks on the next phase of his career at The Dexter School in Brookline, MA this coming sea-

son. The 6-1, 185-pounder brings proven scoring ability (43 pts last year) and a bit of physicality to a Dexter program that advanced to the championship game of the Prep Small School Tournament last March and wound up ranked No. 9 in New England. Daly’s favorite NHL player is Chicago’s Jonathan Toews, after whom he models his own game to a certain extent. “I love the way he plays the both ends of the ice and his twoway mindset. He’s a center, like me, and he’s not afraid to go into the dirty areas. He has a lot of offensive skill, but his main focus is always on keeping the puck out of his own team’s net. This attributes to the leadership he exemplifies and it makes him an admirable player, who’s definitely a lot of fun to watch,” Daly said.

Daly credits Gino Khachadourian – the head coach at The Pingree School, located in Daly’s home town – as his chief influence. “Gino was my youth hockey coach at Top Gun and taught us the value of hard work and discipline and that you had to come to every game prepared to work hard if you were going to be successful. But, he always kept hockey fun,” Daly said. Daly said he doesn’t know much about the North Shore team competing in this week’s Summer Showcase, but anticipates a strong showing as North attempts to return to the tournament playoffs. “From a personal standpoint, I’m hoping I can get some good exposure through working hard all [during the] tournament and showing people what I can do by playing my game,” he said. He is keeping his options open in regards to college, but has settled on the type of school he is looking for. “I want to go to the school that is the best fit for me academically and athletically. I want to go where I can strive as a student and athlete and make a positive impact on the community as a whole, while still enjoying the college experience,” he said.

he Greater Boston entry this summer at HNIB has a nice mix, both age-wise, and with players from public, Catholic, prep and junior programs dotting the roster. Returning to the bench this summer is Dan Shine, the veteran head coach at Arlington Catholic. Shine this past season picked up his 500th career win. Up front, junior Michael  Snow will be a key returner for Greater Boston. Snow will try a new venture this winter, skat-

ing for the Islanders U-18 full-season club. Also back in the fold is senior Eric Keefe (25 pts). The Arcbishop Williams product had a solid Showcase last winter. Senior Aaron Clancy (23 pts) helped lead Catholic Memorial back to the Super 8 Tournament and also is a returning Greater Boston forward. He will be helped in the offensive zone by school teammate - junior Paul  Hardiman, making his HNIB debut.

in Division II. Irving, an adept playmaker heading to Tilton for a post-grad year, left as his school’s all-time leading scorer. A trio of other prep school standouts will also be instrumental in the North Shore offense. Junior Pat  Daly should figure prominently in Dexter School’s plans, as does senior Michael Harris (24 pts) at BB&N and Ipswich’s Gino  Roy at St. George’s. St. John’s Prep sends what should be two of its top guns for the upcoming season in senior Teddy McNamara (12 pts) and junior Nick Latham (11 pts).

ward at Peabody HS this winter. Defensively, North should be in pretty good shape. Senior Harrison Markell (19 pts) of Middlesex School via Andover is a top prep school blueliner and will be cornerstone. Junior Payton  Jancsy is a key rearguard at Phillips Andover, helping the Big Blue to the New England Large School semifinals. Beverly’s Nick Albano (46 pts) has gifted offensive skills and will surely be involved offensively as well. He was also a state champion with the Panthers and heads to Proctor Academy for his senior campaign. Berkshire’s Dan  Driscoll (15 pts) is

rounding into a solid blue liner. Postgrad Jack  Morency teamed with Albano at Beverly for that state title run; he heads to Tilton. Rounding out the blue line is Peabody HS product Matt Pino, a force on the Tanners blue line, and junior Mitchell  McLaughlin from the Valley Jr. Warriors Metro League club. The goaltending chores will fall on a pair of juniors. Tim Birarelli was the strength in for Beverly’s title run in Mass. D-2 circles and moves on to Loomis Chafee this winters. Jake Harlow is the man between the pipes for Amesbury HS. Page 51

he South Shore/RI entry won the North Division of this HNIB Showcase last summer, and definitely has the personnel to challenge again here is 2014. Cushing Academy mentor Rob Gagnon will once again be behind the dasher for this club, bringing his experience of many years coaching in the prep school ranks. It looks like Gagnon certainly has some talent to work with up front, led by BC High’s Pat Kramer (38 pts), a Merrimack College commit for 2016. Kramer brings his smooth game and

playmaking skills. Expect some production from senior Joe Smith (48 pts) from the New Hampton School, a sophomore All Star at HNIB back in 2012. Tyson Araujo (71 pts) was one of the top scorers in Mass. HS hockey last winter at Martha’s Vineyard and takes his talents for a post-grad year at Albany Academy. Senior Brandon  Ecklund is a returning South/RI forward who this coming winter will play with the Junior Bruins U-18 club. Senior Cody Braga, who played for Suburban last summer at HNIB, is the big gun for Hull/Middleboro HS.

Defense looks solid as well for South/RI, anchored by the returning Cushing duo of seniors Trevor  Kacz and Patrick  Horrocks. This twosome will be more-than-steady in front of the net and also contribute offensively. BC High junior Billy  Roche (13 pts) was a Sophomore MVP at HNIB last winter. Senior Matt  Cappucci was instrumental in powering Wachusett to the Central Mass. title game. Keep an eye on post-grad Joe Harrington, bound for Phillips Andover after starring on the blue line for Braintree HS, a Mass. Division I state finalist. Big James McGowan (6’5”) is the rock on the blue line for Scituate HS.

Portsmouth, RI native Myles  Arkins rounds out the blue line crew; he is heading for Proctor Academy this winter. oming off a pretty successful summer last July at HNIB that resulted in a playoff berth, Suburban is hoping for a repeat performance in 2014. Crafty veteran Gary Bishop from New Hampshire's Bishop Guertin returns for yet another summer behind the Suburban bench. Up front, senior Jonathan Alsfeld returns to the lineup after a successful stint with Suburban last summer. Most recently, he

played for the Cranston Reds in his native RI. Senior Anthony Hart  from Bridgewater-Raynham also returns with HNIB experience, having skated with South/RI last year. Their experience should pay dividends. Scoring should come from the likes of junior Cal Johnson from Billerica, one of the top forwards in the MVC-Dual County I league, and Chris  Googins, who helped lead Braintree HS to the D-1 state final this past March.

ack for its third summer at the HNIB Major Showcase, Metro is hoping to continue the success of the past few years. The team has been put together once again by Frank Golden, who this coming year will join the bench for the Islanders Hockey Club USPHL Premier team. In Mass.HS hockey this past year, eventual state champ Reading and Wilmington engaged in a game for the ages in the D1 North final. No less than six forwards from those two teams

are represented here. State champ Reading boasts senior Sean  Verrier (29 pts), who has a knack for scoring big goals and Sophomore Matt Thomson (21 pts), already playing a key offensive role for the Rockets. Junior Liam  O’Neill is fully ready for an increased scoring role with Reading this winter. Junior Billy Falter (14 pts) was an HNIB Sophomore All Star last winter and will be even more vital to Wilmington’s cause this coming season. Sophomore Justin  Collins had a bang-up

Minnesota boys team debuted at HNIB last summer, and is back again for a second go-around.

Head coach Lenny Vannelli, overseer of the CADP in Minnesota, is back again to coach the squad, which will also include players from the New England area to bolster the roster. Several of the Minnesota forwards are returning from last summer’s outfit. Senior Rex Riley (25 pts) brings his good size and scoring knack from the well-known Academy of Holy Angels program. Senior Adam Vannelli also returns, coming off an impressive 38-point season at Apple Valley HS.

Senior Mark Hildahl (20 pts) from Mound Westonka HS will be a key component up front. The same goes for junior Victor Morgan, a South St. Paul residentwho racked up 25 points in a fine Sophomore campaign at Achiever Academy. He can also play defense. Keep an eye on junior Conor Ryan from the hockey hotbed of Edina. Senior Jacob Aberwald brings his offensive talents from Champlin Park HS. Senior Hunter Dolan joins the club from his native state of Wisconsin, where he plays at River Falls HS. Senior Jake Myers, a local product who plays at Hill School, is also a returning member of the Minnesota squad. Bryan Connolly of Nashua South HS bolsters Minnesota’s defense.

his club reached the semifinals of last summer’s Showcase and with some key components back, Team Philadelphia will again be a competitive lot. American Hockey Schools mentor Charlie Pens returns again behind the bench. An offensive catalyst will surely be Brandon Robert. The Southgate, MI native had a banner HNIB Showcase last summer, being named one of four MVPS. He plans on a PG year

with the Cape Cod Islanders. Scoring should also come from senior Collin Wiercinski, another returning player who put up 32 pts for the Hill School last winter. Juniors Houston Wilson and Justin Cole were both solid players for Team Philadelphia last winter, and translated that success to Vermont Academy this past winter. They are two more scorers to watch.
