elcome players, parents, college scouts and fans to Hockey Night in Boston’s 20th annual Girls Summer Showcase, a top-flight tournament consisting of players from over 20 different states and Canada Last summer’s tournament saw TeamONE take its first showcase crown, edging two-time defending champion Minnesota in a thrilling title game that went down to the final seconds, 4-3. This year’s Showcase will certainly boast some exciting up-and-down action, as the Showcase will again field 9 teams competing for the 2014 championship: Massachusetts Preps, Massachusetts Public/Catholic, New England, Northeast, Minnesota, Mid Atlantic, Shamrocks, TeamONE and a new entry, Eastern. Each team will play four first-round games, before the playoff rounds begin on Friday, August 8th. Each team will get two playoff games determined by their positioning in the standings after the four first-round games. The top four teams will enter in semifinals and vie for the Girls Summer Showcase title.

HNIB’s 20th Annual Girls Summer Showcase Welcome Players, Parents, Scouts With the amazing growth womens hockey has seen, HNIB decided in 1995 to add the Girls Summer Showcase to its summer activities. 2014 marks the historic 40th year of HNIB’s nationally-known boys tournament, which will have finished playoffs and All Star competition before the womens tournament got underway. The Minnesota entry consists of a group of top high school age players from the state. This summer, Lenny Vannelli will be behind the bench of what should be another potent club. The Massachusetts Preps idea was born five summers ago as a team was put together consisting of players who either live or play prep hockey in Massachusetts. The team won the crown each of its first two years and reached the finals two summer. This year’s outfit will again be guided by Jenelle Ries of nearby Brooks School. The same formula held true for Frank Pagliuca, the coach of Massachusetts state high school power St. Mary’s of Lynn, who has put together a solid club representing the Massachusetts Public and Catholic schools for the fifth straight summer. Under the guidance of Bob Rotondo, his organization, the Boston Jr. Shamrocks, has come up players from his multi-tiered organization to form the Shamrocks team, to be coached this summer by new Shamrocks assistant coaches Molly Corl and Abby Gauthier. On the weekend of June 6-8, a camp festival was held at the Valley Forum in Haverhill, MA, where three teams were finalized. The coaching staff of Corey Cooper from Proctor Academy, Courtney Sheary from Cushing Academy, Pagliuca, and Lawrence Academy’s Kevin Potter finalized the New England, Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic entries. Worcester Academy head coach Kevin Zifcak will coach the Mid Atlantic entry, Sheary will man the New England bench, and Cooper will be the coach of Team Northeast. TeamOne, the defending champion, is back to defend its crown with another solid outfit. It is coached by Ray Jacques. The team is comprised of some of the best young talent in the area. So, look forward to some exciting hockey over the next several days. Once again, congratulations to all the participants. The newest entry into the HNIB Girls Showcase is Eastern, put together by coach Potter at Lawrence Academy. The team should be competitive right away. HNIB wishes good luck to all the teams. Please have a fun tournament of competitive hockey.

T
he entire Hockey Night In Boston staff is sad to announce the death of company co-founder and owner P. Lance LoFaro, who passed away over the holiday weekend on July 5th, 2014. Lance LoFaro founded HNIB along with partner Darby Yaeger back in 1972 when they started broadcasting local high school games on the radio. That blossomed into a television highlights show that was widely viewed by Massachusetts HS hockey players and fans. In 1974, the first HNIB Summer Showcase debuted, with four teams of local HS stars participating. The tournament grew fast into a National event, with players from all over the country traveling to the Boston area. It is known as the “grandfather of Summer Showcases, of which there are now many. This 2014 HNIB’s Boys Major Showcase will mark the 40th Anniversary of the event.
LoFaro with HNIB Staffers Jamie Callery (l) and Gary Demopoulos (r) back in 2011 at TD Garden.
P. Lance LoFaro HNIB co-founder/owner 1946-2014
LoFaro and Yaeger put together a Sophomore All Star Tournament in the early 1980s that featured top players entering their Sophomore year of high school that fall. HNIB’s 34th Annual Sophomore All Star Tournament was recently held July 13-18. Under LoFaro’s direction, HNIB also started a women’s Hockey Night In Boston Showcase in 1995 and a Junior High Festival in 2002. The 2014 Junior High Festival was held concurrent with the Sophomore Tournament from July 1318, while the 20th Annual Women’s Showcase will run from August 6-10. LoFaro was also instrumental in starting a Scholastic Hockey newspaper – the HNIB News, which this past season celebrated its 30th year and is read all over New England.

Impressive Group Of 6 Will Stand Out

By Kevin Doyle • HNIB
ach summer since 1995, Hockey Night In Boston’s Girls Summer Showcase has attracted some of the country’s premier players. This year’s 20th annual event continues that tradition. Among this year’s stalwarts are returning HNIB Team MVP Emily Loprete; Arlington Catholic All-Scholastic Adrieana Rossini; Brooks standout Danielle Doherty; returning HNIB award winner Meggan Rodriguez of Choate; Jr. Shamrocks star Jessie Jacques; and Nobles junior and U18 National Team selection Caitrin Lonergan. Jessica Jacques, a senior, is skating for defending Girls Showcase champion TeamONE this week. She is a returning HNIB Award winner, garnering a Top Forward plaque at last year’s event. She attended USA Hockey’s National Development Camp for the third straight year in June and has competed in many tournaments this summer. A member of the Junior Women’s Hockey League (JWHL) Boston Shamrocks, she is anticipating a strong showing by TeamONE this week. “I feel like the TeamONE team is something special.

We will play up to our highest potential and we are coming back with the same intensity we had before. We are a hard-working team and I have no doubt that we will succeed. My team moves the puck well and we all just have a blast while playing,” she said. Jacques is a big fan of the stylish game played by former Boston Bruin Marc Savard. “He doesn't play now but when he did he was a joy to watch. I think we both share similar qualities. We are both playmakers and whenever I watch him on the ice I just picture myself always making that next pass,” said Jacques, who said her sense of the game is her primary strength. “My playmaking skills, knowing where people are and making the easy pass.” While she said her overall game has improved in the past year, Jacques knows there is work to be done. “I have been working out a lot getting stronger, working on my shot, getting quicker to the puck, and always moving to open ice when I don't have it. I feel as though I should work on my shot more, and keep doing what I'm doing by working out at the gym to get stronger,” she assessed. She credits Shamrocks’ coach Josh Hechter for helping to refine her game, calling him “the best coach I have had.” She will strive to put forth her best effort this week as TeamONE defends its title. Though undecided upon her college major, Jacques indicated she may study business and financial planning and one day hopes to work for her dad (Ray). Emily Loprete, a Watertown (MA) High School senior, has been the leading scorer for the Watertown/Belmont co-op squad for three years running. She rang up 40 goals last season, leading W-B to a 17-3-2 record. “I have very high expectations for Watertown/Belmont this year. I hope [we] branch off our excellent record of last year and improve it to even higher standards,” she said. Loprete cited speed and soft hands as the keys to her success to date and is a big fan of Boston Bruins’ dynamo Brad Marchand. “Despite his small size he is always making a huge impact while on the ice,” said Loprete, who possesses a deadly wrist shot and is working to quicken her release on a variety of different shots. Loprete likes the make-up of this year’s Mass. Public-Catholic club. “Each player is at a high skill level and as a whole I think we can set the expectations high and play very competitive hockey,” she said, adding “I hope to gain better game sense – scanning the ice quicker, and knowing what to do
with the puck before I get it.” This tournament kicks off what could be Loprete’s final season of competitive hockey. A stalwart member of Watertown’s powerhouse field hockey program, she has verbally committed to play field hockey at Holy Cross where she hopes to pursue a degree in Business. (Continued On Page 24)

Shamrocks’ rodriguez A Strong two-Way Player Meggan Rodriguez will skate for the Jr. Shamrocks this week. She was an HNIB Biggest Surprise winner in the 2013 Showcase and is entering her junior year at Choate, hopeful of improving upon last year’s 15-6-3 record. Rodriguez said her overall game has matured, especially when it comes to positioning and overall ice awareness. “My strengths are my aggressiveness, and consistency when back-checking, and forechecking. My main objective on the ice is to body off, and put intense pressure on my opponents in order to create a turnover,” she said. “I am always looking to self-improve. My biggest challenge is dynamic skating. I need to refine my skating style to quickly adjust to high-speed plays.” The Philadelphia Flyers’ Jaromir Jagr is her favorite player “because of his tremendous work ethic.” “I admire his strength, stamina, and competitiveness. His on-ice demeanor is often relentless and aggressive, traits that I strive to have. I recently found out that he always works out with weights on his ankles and a weighted vest; this demonstrates his desire to continue to excel as one of the oldest NHL players in the league,” she said. Rodriguez thinks the Shamrocks are a team to contend with this week. “The roster this year is filled with very talented women. The Shamrocks will be
expecting tight competition because opposing teams have equally exceptional players. However, I expect our team to have a great (tournament), because of our highly competitive nature, and tight-knit program,” she said. A lover of animals, especially horses, Rodriguez plans to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine. Though she remains uncommitted, Rodriguez is passionate about playing at a Division One institution and hopes to make a decision soon.
Mass. Preps’ Doherty A True Scorer Danielle Doherty connected for 18 goals and added 21 assists last winter, leading Brooks to the New England Division Two Prep championship game, where it lost in double OT to The Gunnery. Will there be an encore? “Because we made it so far last year by being the underdogs in the beginning of the season, I’m positive we can once again make it to the championship, and this time take home the win. We are a very close team and you can see the chemistry on the ice. We will continue our hard work ethic to help us get to where we want to be,” said Doherty, a Brooks captain and a member of the Mass Prep squad this week. Rangy at five feet, seven inches, Doherty said her game evolved last winter. “The physicality of my game completely changed. Also, the way I play and position myself on the ice became smarter as everything started to click. When I was a freshman and sophomore I understood the game but junior year is when our teams systems came naturally to me. It took time but when I was (Continued On Page 25)
Adrieana Rossini A Leader For Mass. Public/Catholic Adrieana Rossini is once again skating for the Mass. PublicCatholic club. A perennial All-Scholastic pick by The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald, she tallied 30 goals and 45 points to lead Arlington (MA) Catholic to the Division 1 State title game against Duxbury. There is one singular goal this winter – to bookend her career with a second State Championship. “This will be my last year at Arlington Catholic and I’m hoping with hard work, dedication and good leadership, this will be the best year. Over the past three years we made it to the TD Garden for the finals and won it my freshman year. We have a strong coach and several strong players who are as committed to the team. I believe the team will be focused and ready for any challenges,” she said. Rossini finds it hard to comment on her own strengths as a player because she puts the team first above all else. “It is nice to score; however getting the goal is only part of the MASS. PUBLIC/CATHOLIC’s Adrieana Rossini will need to be watched all week.

younger the coaches and captains led by good example to help everyone better understand. I hope I can do the same as one of the captains next year,” she said. She admires the Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron. “He has always been a favorite of mine not just because he is one of the best in the league, but also because he is always the hardest worker on the ice and doesn’t use just his talent alone. That is an important trait that every player should have. Watching him play teaches me how to better my game every time,” she noted. As for her own game, Doherty is working diligently on increasing her strength and improving her speed. “If I am able explode when getting the puck on my stick, I think my game would show a significant difference. I have been working with a trainer and skating several times a week, as well as attending hockey camps to improve my skills,” she said. She likes the Mass. Prep team’s chances to win it all this week. “Based on the roster I can tell we have a wide variety of very talented, hardworking, and unique players. If we combine all our strengths I’m positive we will be a threat,” she observed. “I hope to improve as a player by playing against all the skilled athletes that each team contains. By watching the great talent in this tournament I am always able to learn something new. I also hope this serves as a springboard to another successful season at Brooks,” Doherty added. She is looking at both Division 1 and Division 3 colleges and hopes to study both Business and Communications. “I hope to make a decision soon. I want to find the right fit educationally and further my hockey career,” she said.

game. I like to be a playmaker that passes the puck because it is the right move. If I had to list strengths I would say that I am consistent. I try to play most games as if it is my last,” she said. When it comes to her favorite player, Rossini is definitely old school. “People would probably laugh at me when I say that Bobby Orr is my favorite player. My dad introduced Bobby Orr to me several years ago. I saw old games and interviews of him. He was just 18 years old when he came to Boston, and has to be the best player the Bruins ever signed,” she said. Though not familiar with some of the players on the Mass. Public-Catholic roster, Rossini said she is always up for the challenge of meeting new teammates and playing in a tournament setting.” “I am looking forward to playing with and against different players. I am hoping to have fun,” said Rossini, who hopes to eventually work in the Health Care field in some capacity. She has not yet made her college choice.
Caitrin Lonergan is also on the TeamONE Roster this week. Already committed to Harvard, she joins the powerful Nobles program this coming season as a junior transfer from St. Paul’s. She played on the National U18 team last year and will do so again this year. She is excited about attending Nobles, a move made because she wanted to live at home again. “St. Paul's is a fantastic school and I was so grateful that I was able to be part of the school community. I am really excited to be part of Nobles and my expectation is to become better each and every day in and outside the classroom. I also want to win a New England Title as well,” said Lonergan, who had 22 goals and 46 points last season and was a third-team selection on USA Today’s inaugural All-USA high school girls hockey team. She realized a lifetime dream by playing for Team USA. “It was such an honor to be given the opportunity to travel to represent my country. It was also such an incredible opportunity to play with and against the best players in the world, and to be coached by such an amazing group of coaches. Putting on the USA jersey was a feeling I will never forget,” she said. The same goes for her commitment to Harvard. “It’s the academics, coaching, team and atmosphere that made me fall in love with Harvard,” she said. “I’ve lived in Boston my whole life and when Harvard offered me a commitment spot it was an amazing feeling knowing I could play for my hometown in college. It has always been my dream.” The Crimson will be getting a supremely skilled player who unfailingly places the team first. “Team goals will always come before my individual goals. Team play and chemistry has always been important to me. I also work very hard on and off the ice too become better every day. I need to continue to keep working hard in the gym, as that will help me play Division 1,” Lonergan said, Longergan most admires 2014 U.S. Olympian Josephine Pucci. “Josephine is my favorite player and she has always been a great role model to me. Pucci is one of the hardest workers I have ever met and she is always so positive and never gives up. Pucci isn’t just a great hockey player, but she is also a great person,” said Lonergan. Her influences have been many and she praised Dennis Laing, Bill Horan, Heather Farrell, George Chase and the National Team staff for encouraging her to become better with each practice and game. Lonergan is looking forward to the Summer Showcase, noting “it's great to play with different kids who are from different schools and regions to come together and play together as one.”

new team to the HNIB Girls Summer Showcase this summer is Eastern, which should impress right away.
Kevin Potter, the head coach at Lawrence Academy, put together and will coach this group. There is a distinct Lawrence Academy flavor to the club, as no less than four forwards will call the school home this fall. Junior Jordan Monbouquette and sophomore Sarah
Wright are incumbent forwards with the Spartans and both also play with the Wizards program. Sophomore Emily Lanci is another solid forward from the Lawrence program. Meanwhile, new sophomore Kelsey Ryan joins the school after a couple of solid seasons with Burlington HS. Senior Kelly Ferreira comes from the top-notch program at Falmouth HS, where she is one of the team’s top forwards. Senior Jessica Leone is key to her Andover HS squad.

Two forwards move to Eastern after skating for different clubs at HNIB last summer. Senior Julianne Sheehan was a go-to player at forward for Chelmsford HS, while senior Michaela McNamara was a key part of another state title in Rhode Island for LaSalle Academy. Sophomore Taylor Ettore had a solid freshman campaign at Worcester Academy. Talented freshman Lindsey Dumond will try the womens prep hockey world at St. Mark’s in the fall. Winchester native Kathryn Turner, a senior, skates with the East Coast Wizards program. Senior Erin McLaughlin helped lead her

Watertown/Belmont HS team to the state quarterfinals in Mass. D-1 girls hockey. The Eastern defense looks solid. Seniors Hannah Ghelfi and Kelly Potter will be cornerstones, as they are at Lawrence Academy during the winter. Nova Scotia’s Bobbi Strople, a senior, will be a welcome addition to the club. Junior Charlotte Albrecht is part of the always-powerful Nobles team in prep hockey. Junior Taryn O’Neil is another blueliner with ties to Lawrence Academy. Senior Meagan Hallaran patrols the back line for Mass. HS power
Arlington Catholic. In goal, the call will go to a pair of juniors, Marissa Anderson of Falmouth, and Kaitlyn Rooney of Shirley, both netminders at Lawrence Academy.

forward award winner. Fellow senior Maddie Evangelous projects to be another key performer in the offensive zone. Governor’s Academy sophomore Flora English will be a going concern, as will Pingree senior Leah Heinze, a member of TeamOne at HNIB last summer. ith an experienced club boasting some of the top names in Mass. Girls HS hockey, the Massachusetts Public/Catholic team is ready to jump into play and show what they can do. Once again given the assignment of molding this club into a cohesive unit is Frank Pagliuca, the veteran head coach at St. Mary’s Lynn. This team should be able to score goals, led by Arlington
Catholic senior Adrieana Rossini and Watertown-Belmont senior Emily Loprete. Both led their clubs in scoring last season and have had prolific high school careers. Senior Sam Girard is back for her third summer at HNIB as part of this Public/Catholic club and she has been the go-to forward for her Dedham HS team since freshman season. And how about senior Jane Dudley, who led her Duxbury HS team to its fourth straight state title with a host of key post-season goals.

aving come up one goal short in last year’s title game, you can be sure that Team Minnesota will be focused on getting that top prize back in 2014. Minnesota CADP director Lenny Vannelli has put together another strong squad that will be tough to beat. A key up front for Minnesota will be senior Sadie Baker, who plays her hockey at Washburn HS. Junior Amanda Navratil is also a forward to watch, she is from the Breck School. Junior Sidney Portner of Andover HS is another forward adept at putting the puck in the net. Junior Courtney Ketola is a key in the lineup at the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton program.
The Dodge County Wildcats, a co-op program of seven different high schools, is well represented as well, led be senior Brede Postier and junior Molly Shelton, both skilled offensive players. Also from the Dodge County program are junior Bella Wagner, a returning Team Minnesota player, and senior Jacie Hoehn, who is comfortable playing either forward or defense. Junior Jordan Anderson contributes mightily for her New Prague HS team. The rock on the Minnesota blue line is senir Laine Fischer, who is drawing Division I interest. Senior Amanda Kewer helped her Pomfret School team to the prep playoffs this past season. Senior Devan Taylor has a major role at Lawrence Academy. Junior Jessica Cloutier looks ahead to a big season at St. Paul’s. Senior Nikki Friesen comes from the well-known Colorado Selects program and hails from the state of Oregon. US U-18 team member Caitrin Lonergran, already committed to Harvard, will be on the blue line for TeamONE this summer. In the fall, she will have a new home at Nobles. Junior Ali Peper, also a Harvard recruit, is a Colorado resident coming east with the Shamrocks program. Juniors Brittany Colton from Lawrence Academy and Sarah Lopez Wheeler from BB&N will be defensive stalwarts. Lopez Wheeler played for TeamONE last summer as well. Austin Prep senior Rebecca Raphael will look to open some eyes on the blue line. In goal, St. Paul’s junior Kerri St. Denis is back looking for a second Showcase title. A second goalie was to be named after the magazine went to press.
