HOCKEY NIGHT IN BOSTON By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB

H

ockey Night In Boston welcomes you to our 41st annual Summer Showcase being held again this year at the Valley Forum, a beautiful two-rink facility in Haverhill, MA (25 miles north of Boston). Action in the 18-team Summer Showcase begins on Thursday, July 23rd with a unique jamboree-style format sure to please the scouts in attendance. Each of the 18 teams will each play six games against six different opponents over a fourday period. College and NHL Scouts will be able to see prospects play two times each day on Friday and Saturday against different opponents. Four select teams of Massachusetts /RI top players – Greater Boston, South Shore/RI, North Shore, Middlesex/Merrimack _ were chosen in April/May. Players were invited by the HNIB staff based upon their previous HNIB involvement and winter’s scholastic hockey season. The 32nd annual New YorkConnecticut-Mid-Atlantic camp featuring over 90 players took place from June 1214. The players competed for spots on

HNIB’s 41st Annual Showcase two teams in the HNIB Showcase: Mid Atlantic and Connecticut/NY. HNIB Mid-West Director John Malloy helped put together a club from the Midwest region The Midwest team will feature players from many Midwestern states. Over 90 skaters signed up for the 31st annual Northern New England camp in Haverhill, MA from June 5th -7th. The result was two select teams, Northern New England and Northeast, that represent players from Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Late in June, 50 players were drafted from the HNIB High School Division tryouts for participation in the major showcase (from a turnout of 130 partcipants), including a whole Suburban entry. Fifteen teams of sophomores (over 300 players) competed in the gigantic and unique HNIB Sophomore All-Star Tournament from July 12-17. Also,

HNIB. The final Sophomore All Stars was chosen after the tournament’s All-Star Games on July 17th. Returning at HNIB this summer are two major teams representing South Florida (Tim Kyrkostas), and the Philadelphia area (Charlie Pens of American Hockey Schools). Both should be contenders. Mass West is back again with a nice nucleus of young talent. Newlynamed Cape Ann looks to a challenger. This summer HNIB welcomes two new clubs including a team of upand-comers from the New Jersey area, put together by Brian Monteverdi of East Coast Hockey. Another new club looking for an impressive baptism is East Coast, compiled by coach Matt Lavallee. Making its second straight appearance in the Major Showcase is over 200 junior high players partici- Central, put together by Jon Fontas pated in their own festival as a step- of The Hockey Academy and ping stone to their initial exposure at American Hockey Institute.

ustin Prep’s senior co-captain Mike Egan can flat out score. As a sophomore, he provided secondary offense behind then-juniors Bobo Carpenter – the B.U. commit, who left for the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers – Cam Russo and Ryan McDonough.

Egan exploded last winter for a 24-24-48 line, leading AP to a 21-3-1 record and Division 1A semifinal berth. He capped his year with two goals in a 6-3 semifinal loss to Malden Catholic, which stands as his most memorable career moment. “They were the reigning champions the past few [four] years and going against them and getting a couple of big goals and an assist was electrifying,” said Egan, who will serve as cocaptain with Jake McKennely. “Our goal is to obviously win the Super 8. We have a great group of players coming back and we anticipate having some of the younger guys stepping up and making a positive impact on the team. Along with Jake, I think we will do a great job leading the team to be competitive (and) hard working,” he said. Egan is looking forward to skating with the Middlesex/Merrimack team in this week’s 41st Summer Showcase. “I know the Middlesex/ Merrimack team will have some of the best players in the area and I am excited to be part of the team. I will compete as hard as I can and do my best to play well and help my team. I plan to play unselfishly, get some wins, and have fun,” he said. Egan trains constantly. “My strength as a player is my work ethic – the hard work at each and every practice, the training in the off-season, and consistently training in the weight room both in and off season. I am an unselfish player and enjoy making smart plays on the ice with a high compete level,” Egan said. “I would like to improve in all areas of the game through sacrifice and hard work and evolve into the best player possible.” He admires the overall game of the Chicago Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews. south shore/RI’s Billy Roche a Team-First defenseman

A

By Kevin Doyle • HNIB

nyone who has seen him play knows this: B.C. High’s senior defenseman Billy Roche is a team-first guy who plays with great pride and passion. Roche looks forward to assuming a larger leadership role this winter for an Eagles’ squad that graduated eight from last year’s Massachusetts Division 1A Tournament quarterfinalist. “I am very vocal and intense and take pride in playing for BCH,” said Roche, who is skating for the South Shore/Rhode Island entry in this year’s 41st annual Summer Showcase. “Obviously the goal for the incoming season is to win the Super 8, but first we have to get there. Another goal that our BCH coaches and players always fight for is to win the Catholic Conference because at the end of the season, coaches can bring that to the Super 8 table and use it as a solid argument (for ranking),” he added. Roche’s first high school goal remains his most memorable moment as a player, although a State Championship next March would surely supplant that. “It was vs. St. John’s of Shrewsbury. I remember the exact moment of crashing the net and getting a pass and tapping it in then crashing into the boards where my teammates basically jumped on me. At the faceoff immediately after the crowd started cheering ‘He's a freshman!’ And that's when the chills ran through my body,” he recalled. (Continued on Page 25)

BC High’s Billy roche will anchor the blue line this summer for the South Shore/rhode island entry.

BC High’s Billy Roche A Blue-Line Standout (Continued From Page 24)

Roche is a big fan of New York Rangers’ defenseman Keith Yandle, a Massachusetts native and Cushing Academy product. “He is a local star. He respects the game and goes out there every shift and gives everything he has to help his team win. He is a solid offensive defenseman and is always making great plays,” Roche said. As for his own game, Roche uses his size and reach to his advantage. “I consider my strengths as a player to be a very defensive defenseman. I am very strong and aggressive and do well in the one-on-one battles along the boards. I also do a good job at holding the blue line in the offensive zone,” he said, noting he must improve his poise and patience with the puck and is working hard to increase his speed. Roche credits his parents for his success on and off the ice and for providing him the framework to excel.

Egan A Premier Offensive Talent (Continued From Page 23)

“He is such a talented hockey player. He has amazing vision on the ice, he’s a great skater, hard worker, and is always in the right place at the right time,” Egan observed. Egan credited his parents for instilling a strong work ethic in him and thanked them for their support of his hockey pursuits through the years. “Hockey is a very demanding sport that requires that support,” he said. “Kim Brandvold and Tom Ford of Dynamic Skating have helped me tremendously to refine all the skills necessary to compete at a high level. They are also tremendous role models. I have trained with them for years and they have been a huge help developing me into the player I am today. Jamie Smith has also been a tremendous help in the weight room,” Egan added. His hockey path beyond Austin Prep is undecided at this point. “I have talked with some prep schools as well as some Junior programs,” he said. “I have not made a decision for college yet. I would love to play Division One (Hockey East), which is my goal if afforded the opportunity.” Similarly, he is not yet sure what field of study he will pursue. “I am interested in a couple of fields. I will continue to work hard in the classroom to allow more options,” he said.

“My father is a very passionate man when it comes to hockey. After every game he would tell me what I need to improve on and is very intense about it. I love that, I love the intensity he brings because he motivates me to get better. He's always there to talk about hockey and even life in general. He's like a best friend to me and I can talk to him about anything,” he said. “My mom is always on me about my schoolwork. She is one of the reasons why I am successful in school. She also does everything to pay for my school tuition and the camps and showcases I attend. Words don't describe how grateful I am to have these two people in my life every day,” Roche continued. He anticipates a strong showing from South Shore/R.I. this weekend and, from a personal standpoint, hopes the Showcase generates interest from the prep school coaches in attendance. A standout baseball player for the Eagles, Roche prefers to take a PG year since he wants to play both sports in college. If he travels the Junior Hockey route, he will enroll in college classes and is hopeful of playing at an ECAC or NESCAC school. He hopes to one day become a Massachusetts State Trooper.

Loomis Chaffee Blue-Chip Goalie Birarelli A Difference-Maker Between The Pipes will Be Key Cog in north Shore’s run Upon arriving at Loomis-Chaffee this past season, Birarelli adjusted well and went on to play a whopping 1,212 minutes while leading the team to its first-ever New England Elite 8 playoff berth and a No. 8 ranking in Hockey Night In Boston’s final poll. “The biggest adjustment for me was the workload at school and being able to balance athletics and academics,” he said.

“I like the way I’m able to move around the crease and think my skating is a big part of my game.”

f you’ve followed Tim Birarelli, then you know he is a difference-maker, the caliber of goalie capable of elevating a program. When he left Beverly (MA) High School following his junior year in 2014, it was only after securing the program’s first Division Two State title that March at TD Garden in a 2-1 win against Medfield. “My most memorable moment as a player would have to be when we won at the Garden with all the kids I grew up playing hockey with, Birarelli says.

- North Shore Goalie Tim Birarelli Birarelli not only had to adjust in his hockey life this past year, but his personal life as well. His dad Joe, passed away in June of 2014 at the age of 45, and Tim honors his dad every day by stepping up as the oldest of three boys. Joe Birarelli was a well-known lobsterman in the Beverly area and Tim has taken it upon himself to help run the business - Water Street Lobster - and operate his dad’s 42-foot lobster boat. In addition, Birarelli helps out mom Nicki with her new business - Joe’s On A Roll, a food truck with serves lobster rolls in the Beverly area. Tim also honors his dad’s memory on the back of his goaltender helmet, something he never told anyone he was going to do (see photo next page). What’s in store this winter? Only time and hard work will tell. “The goal is the same as last season and that is to get better every day and to play as a team,” says Birarelli. A rangy six-foot, one-inch, he’s a big fan of the Canadiens’ Carey Price “because of how simple his style of play is and also how well he is able to handle the puck.” Birarelli says mobility plays a big part in his success but also knows what areas need to improve. (Continued on Page 27)

tim Birarelli Had impressive first year in Prep Hockey (Continued From Page 26)

“I like the way I’m able to move around the crease and think my skating is a big part of my game and helps out quite a bit. (But) I need to improve in all aspects of my game, most importantly tracking the puck and reading the play at a much faster rate,” he says. Birarelli returns for his second season with the North Shore squad in this year’s 41st annual Summer Showcase. “I don't really know much about the North Shore team, but I am hoping to just have fun and break up the summer with some hockey.” He said Mike Buckley and the staff at Goaltending Development Services have influenced him greatly as a player. “I wouldn't be where I am now without the help and guidance from them,” Birarelli notes. Birarelli has no preference as to where he plays in college. That path could entail playing a year at the Junior level, a decision Birarelli says he will make when the time comes. He plans to study either Business or Finance.

NNE Forward derek Tillotson looks For Repeat summer Performance Derek was a Showcase MVP last summer at HNIB after leading Northern New England to the tournament title.

derek tillotson • nne Catalyst

D

By Kevin Doyle • HNIB

erek Tillotson was among those leading the way when Proctor Academy surged to the semifinals of the NEPSAC Large School Tournament this past

season. Now, with a large core of players back from that team, Tillotson is confident Proctor will be in the mix again this winter. “The goal for this year is to reach the Elite 8 tournament. We have a great group of returning core guys coming back and an influx of good recruits committed to working hard to reach our goal,” said Tillotson, who is prepared to take on an expanded leadership role as a senior. “I think that I can help lead our team this year in some way. We have two of our captains returning which will be great for the team. I think that personally I could help show some of the younger guys the ropes, and what it means to be a hockey player at Proctor,” he said. At 5-9 and 160 pounds, Tillotson’s game is predicated on

speed and quickness. “I think that my speed helps me get in on the fore-check quicker to create turnovers and to attack off of the rush faster. I also think my vision and hockey IQ helps me to assess what is happening on the ice and to make better decisions with and without the puck,” he said. “My general strength needs to improve, as well as my shooting.” His two favorite NHL players, Alex Ovechkin and Patrick Kane, rank among the very best of their generation. “They are both a lot of fun to watch. Ovechkin’s shot is amazing and I love the way he likes to be physical; you don’t see a lot of superstar goal-scorers throwing body checks. I admire Kane’s playmaking ability (and) his stick handling and passing is unbelievable,” Tillotson said. As for favorite memories, Tillotson reached way back in the vault for two – winning a New Hampshire state youth hockey championship after going 10 overtimes in the semifinals and three overtimes in the title game; and having the opportunity to play Mini One-on-One at TD Garden. Tillotson learned the game from his dad, who coached him right through high school. “He taught me a lot about the game. He wasn’t afraid to tell me what I was doing wrong or to critique me, which I think really helped me grow as a player,” he said. Tillotson returns this summer to the defending champion Northern New England team under the direction of coach Mike Addesa. Last July, he was named as one of the Showcase’s Most Valuable Players in helping to lead the club to its title. “I think that the NNE team is obviously trying to win it again. I’ve played for (Coach Addesa) a few times before and he is a really great coach. Just like my dad he isn’t afraid to critique you, and he’s willing to push you to be the best that you can be,” Tillotson said. Following graduation, Tillotson said that playing a year of Junior Hockey would depend entirely upon what college programs want him to do. “My options are open right now, but I want a college that will really challenge me academically and will give me a great education,” said Tillotson. “The courses that I’m interested in now are Engineering, Architecture, Business and Law.”

at Daly takes the ice for the North Shore squad in this week’s 41st annual Summer Showcase with vivid memories of The Dexter School’s March charge to the Prep School Elite 8 championship game still fresh. “It was a great accomplishment for us to not only reach the Elite 8 playoffs, but also

the championship game,” said Daly of Hamilton, MA, one of Dexter’s top scorers last season. Dexter defeated Cushing in the quarterfinal round then took a 4-2 semifinal road win against The Gunnery, which Daly recalls in great detail. (Continued on Page 31)

“The focus and intensity of our team was very special. We came out of the gate knowing that if we played with extra passion and pride that we were going to win. After freshman Jay O’Brien scored a beautiful goal halfway through the first period, I was able to follow it up soon thereafter with our second goal, which I believe really gave us an advantage for the rest of the game as we were firing on all cylinders and possessed the momentum,” said Daly, who added a clinching emptynetter. “The atmosphere was incredible with our student section staying loud and proud the entire game. The fast pace and vibrant atmosphere was definitely a very special experience and being able to play a key role in our success is something I will cherish forever. The team experience and winning the game was the most important thing to me,” he said. Replicating that feeling will be a challenge as Dexter graduated several key players. Daly, though, is confident those new to the program will make a significant impact. “We are focused on a strong start and consistency [and] we are optimistic and hopeful for another playoff berth. We are ultimately striving to avenge the championship loss to Salisbury and take home the championship,” he said. Daly believes his varied career experiences will aid him in an expanded leadership role as a senior. “Although I felt I was able to provide leadership and a positive attitude on the ice and throughout the locker room, I feel I can build from that into being an even more effective leader. I have been on a variety of different teams and experienced a lot of different situations, and I believe that has allowed me to mature as a person and a player. I am confident I will be able to help lead our team along with the other seniors to success this season,” he said. Open ice acceleration, proven finishing ability and a demonstrated commitment to two-way hockey are Daly’s greatest assets. He is working to become stronger, which will enhance all facets of his game.

Pat Daly Has Big Year At Dexter “I have always prided myself on having a very high competitive level. I try to approach each time I step on the ice as an opportunity to improve. Whether or not I am playing my best, I always give a hundred percent effort, skating as hard as I can and finishing all of my checks and contributing to the team as best I can,” he said. Daly admires New York Rangers’ star Chris Kreider, a Massachusetts native and HNIB alum. “He is incredibly talented, hard working,

exemplifies strong character, and is always a threat to score. I definitely try to model my game after his,” Daly said. “His ability to drive the net, using his speed, and finish is similar to how I play, so watching him do it game in and game out makes him a lot of fun for me to watch. He is always defensive-oriented first and does all the little things right, which is not an easy task, but shows how hard working he is and how well he knows the game.” (Continued on Page 32)

asting an eye toward his overall development as a player, Joe Griffin opted to leave the Masconomet Regional H.S. program following his junior season to skate for the Northern Cyclones’ U-18 squad last year. “I want to play college hockey, which is why I chose the Cyclones. They have a very high success rate getting their kids to college,” said Griffin, from Middleton, MA. The transition from Massachusetts Division 2 public school hockey to a full-season program went remarkably well for the 60, 180-pound defenseman, a left shot who racked up six goals and 23 points for the Cyclones. “I felt that the transition was quite easy; after a few weeks of practice I was able to adjust to the faster pace,” Griffin said. He pinpointed skating and vision as the cornerstones of his game and realizes that in order to advance to the next level he needs to gain strength. He’s always studied the Blackhawks’ Duncan Keith, the 2015 Conn Smythe Award winner. “Ever since I was little I would always watch his games and try to model my game from him,” Griffin said. While Griffin steps up to the Cyclones’ Junior level this season, he maintains strong memories from his time at Masconomet. He led the Chieftains in scoring in his final campaign with 10 goals and 32 points, helping guide them to a Cape Ann League co-championship. “My most memorable moment was my junior year, playing with all the kids I have known since I was three. It was pretty surreal,” he said. He credits his parents for his success because “they have always taught me to work hard and to never give up.” While he doesn’t know much about his team in this week’s Summer Showcase, he hopes to gain recognition from colleges in attendance. “Playing college hockey is open right now. I’m just trying to connect with a college that has a challenging curriculum and strong hockey program,” said Griffin, who plans to study Finance. (Continued From Page 31)

Daly said his dad “has been the most important role model throughout my life, showing and teaching me every day that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to with a strong work ethic and positive attitude but also that being a person of good character is more important than anything else.” Daly took to heart the advice of his Top Gun coach Gino Khachadourian [of Pingree], who stressed the importance of always having fun and reinforced the positive attitude necessary to perform effectively. “Dexter coach Dan Donato has had huge impact on me and helped me improve my game immensely. He uses the knowledge he has gained to educate us about how to really become successful, teaching the detailed intangibles that are key to success and development. Coach Donato is a great leader who

Daly has always enjoyed playing in HNIB events and, based on past experience, expects the North Shore team will again be among the tournament’s more competitive. Whether Daly heads directly to college or the Junior ranks remains to be determined. “This decision depends mostly on my available college opportunities and how they play out. I will need to weigh my options and make the decision that makes the most sense for me as a person, student, and athlete,” said Daly, who has not made a commitment but is most interested to combine the best academic and athletic available. He is interested in studying finance, business and economics.

our months later the loss still stings. After earning the second seed in the New England Prep Elite Tournament with a 26-3-4 regular-season record, Cushing Academy was sent home prematurely via a 1-0 loss to Dexter in March. “The key to taking it all the way this coming season, will be remembering our loss and using that as motivation to continue to work hard and play hard, said Penguins’ senior right wing Brent Hill. A rugged five feet, 10 inches and 180 pounds, Hill is prepared to assume an expanded role for coach Rob Gagnon’s club this season. “Being a senior, I definitely will take on a big leadership role. Whether on or off the ice the, I will help my underclass teammates prosper at Cushing, Hill said. The Lunenburg resident made the move to Cushing two years after scoring 15 points for Austin Prep’s Massachusetts Division 1A finalist as a freshman. He said playing at TD Garden for the 1A title as a freshman ranks as his most memorable moment as a player. Hill put 19 points on the sheet for Cushing last year and admires the Boston Bruins’ three-time Selke Award winner Patrice Bergeron “because he plays a 200-foot game and has a team-first attitude. As for his own game, Hill cites vision and shooting as primary strengths and said he must work to improve his foot speed and on lengthening his stride in order to advance to the next level. “My father has influenced me the most as a player and person because he has been with me every step of my career and has taught me to never give up and to always strive for my goals, Hill said. He is looking forward to skating for Coach Gagnon as a member of the South Shore/Rhode Island squad in the 41st annual Summer Showcase.

Cushing’s Brent Hill will be a key forward this July for coach rob gagnon’s South/ri entry.

“I don’t know much about the team but I do know coach Gagnon will be on the bench coaching to win. I hope to gain exposure to the college teams that will be in attendance, Hill said. He will play Junior hockey following graduation and is hopeful of continuing his hockey career at an Eastern or Midwestern college. He plans to study Business and Economics.

he worst New England winter on record proved to be a memorable experience for Pennsylvania native Channing Gorscak, who came North to play for the Northern Cyclones’ 18-and-under squad last season. Gorscak will return home this season to Jeannette, PA and play for the Esmark Stars 18U team in the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL), but said the chance to play in the Cyclones’ program was well worth it. “We had very good exposure and played a competitive schedule, especially in the first half of the season,” Gorscak said. “What brought me to the Cyclones was the opportunity to play in the best district of hockey in the United States. Everybody

knows about New England hockey and the opportunity it brings. “The Cyclones gave me the opportunity to play in New England with an excellent facility and a lot of exposure. They have a long list of college alumni, and an excellent coaching staff as well as plenty of free ice for their players and a nice workout facility. They give their players everything they need to reach the next level,” he continued. Travelling to play is nothing new to Gorscak. He said his most memorable moment dates back to an international Peewee tournament played at The Pepsi Collisee in Quebec. “We lived with billet families and had a packed stadium every game we played in the tournament. It made me realize how special the sport really is. It also let me realize that moving away from home to play hockey outside of Pittsburgh wasn't a bad thing to do,” he said. Gorscak admires Pavel Datsyuk’s ability to create and control at full speed. “He is always a threat when he has the puck and is also one of the best two-way players the game has ever seen,” Gorscak said. As for his own skill set, Gorscak cites shot release, playmaking, on-ice vision, keeping his feet moving, and commitment to playing both ends of the ice as core elements of his game. He is working to improve his angles on open-ice hits along with lengthening his stride while skating. He is looking forward to this year’s 41st annual Summer Showcase. “I know that the team I'm playing on is a competitive and highly skilled team. There are a couple of other kids from the Cyclones. I'm expecting the team to really come together in the short amount of time and compete to be one of the best teams in the showcase,” said Gorscak, who is hoping to generate interest among junior and college coaches. He credits the support of his family and close friends for the growth of his career. “They are behind me every step of the way and let me have the opportunity to move away home and play hockey all over the U.S.,” he said. Junior hockey is the next stop for Gorscak. He is undecided about college but getting an excellent education at a Division One school is the goal. “One college I really want to play at is the University of Maine. They have an excellent education system as well as a competitive hockey team year after year,” said Gorscak, who hopes to major in Wildlife Biology.

ast season Josh Boulos was a key member of a stellar group of defensemen that anchored Burlington High School’s march to a Middlesex League Freedom Division championship and a Massachusetts Division 1A play-in game. However, from a personal development standpoint, Boulos felt the time was right to make a move and has opted to attend Brewster Academy as a repeat junior, a challenge he is ready take on. “My goal is to play college hockey at the next level. I know Brewster will give me the opportunity to play at a more competitive level to achieve that goal. From a hockey standpoint I expect the transition to be a step faster than Massachusetts HS hockey. School will be tougher but I feel that I am ready for it,” he said.

MIddLeSex/MerrIMaCk rearguard He will take fond memories of his Red Devils’ days with him, including a Division One State championship as a freshman. “Playing at The Garden was an unbelievable experience and one I will never forget. The most difficult part will be being away from my friends and family but it is a change I am willing to make in order to achieve my goals,” said Boulos, who is skating for the Middlesex/Merrimack squad this week. Boulos cites his size, skating and the ability to minimize mistakes as his primary assets. While he rang up five goals and 16 points for Burlington last season, he said he must improve his quickness and hands in order to take his game to the next level. He studies and admires Chicago Blackhawks’ rock-solid rearguard Duncan Keith. “He is so good at controlling the puck and making the simple smart plays as a defenseman but then also picks the perfect times to step in and make a rush if he gets the right situation,” Boulos said. Boulos said the constant support of his parents has played a major role in his success to date. “My parents have influenced me the most in my hockey career ever since I started skating. I can’t thank them enough for all they have done and how much they have supported me. I definitely would not be the player I am today if it was not for them,” he said. Boulos will use The Summer Showcase as a personal measuring stick. “I know that the Middlesex/Merrimack team has been competitive the last few years and I hope we can do the same this year. I’m hoping to develop my skills this year in the Showcase Tournament and also see where I stand with some of the other good players in the area,” he said.

Josh Boulos will be an important middlesex/merrimack defensive unit.

Morgan Has Unfinished Business To Tend To Forward Looks To Help Cushing Land Prep Crown

J

By Kevin Doyle • HNIB

eff Morgan and his Cushing teammates head into this coming season with a bit of unfinished business to tend to.

The Penguins, seeded No. 2 in the Boys Prep Elite Tournament, were ousted in the quarterfinal round by Dexter, 1-0, a bitter end to an otherwise stellar 254-4 campaign. Expect Morgan and his mates to be ready to roll this season. “I trust our coach's system and game plan. Last year's loss was tough to swallow, but as you know, anything can happen in playoff hockey. We have a great group of returning players coming back. We're hungry to get past the quarterfinals and will do whatever it takes,” he predicted. Morgan arrived at Cushing last year from Wall (NJ) High School after piling up 60 points as a junior and scored a dozen points in his first prep school campaign. This year he’s looking forward to playing an expanded role for coach Rob Gagnon.

“I've really stepped up my training, in order to make my last year at Cushing the best it can be,” he said. Speed and vision are Morgan’s biggest attributes and make him tough to defend. In order to advance to the next level, he said he must shoot more and improve his overall defensive zone play.

“I’ve really stepped up my training, in order to make my last year at Cushing the best it can be.” -Mid-Atlantic’s Jeff Morgan

He admires the relentless two-way play of the Minnesota Wild’s Zach Parise. “He plays the game with intensity, works hard in both ends of the ice, and can also score goals,” Morgan noted. Morgan said his older brothers were a big influence on him, encouraging him to play the game when he was younger and advising him on ways to improve along the way. This is his second summer with the Mid-Atlantic team at the Summer Showcase and he hopes the club can make a run at the tournament championship. Depending on how his final season at Cushing plays out, Morgan will either head directly to college or play a year of Junior Hockey for additional seasoning. He is keeping all options open. “I haven't made a decision regarding college. Hockey East would be a dream come true, but right now I am focused on improving my game and working hard to get better every day,” he said. He will pursue a business degree.

St. Joseph’s (Montvale) Star Grieco Has Big Goals For 15-16

S

By Kevin Doyle • HNIB

t. Joseph’s (Montvale, NJ) standout Ryan Grieco figures to be on a mission this coming season after the Green Knights fell to Bergen Catholic, 31, in the quarterfinal round of the New Jersey Private Tournament in March. “We had a strong season but not strong enough. The goal is to win the league and state championship,” said Grieco, whose club upset Don Bosco Prep in the Round of 16. Grieco was St. Joe’s leading scorer for the second year in a row with a 16-1329 stat line. He anticipates taking on an expanded leadership role this season. “Many teammates look up to the seniors for leadership and advice and I plan to take that role on,” said Grieco, whose top hockey memory to date is playing in a Silver Sticks tournament in Michigan where his Bantam squad finished in the Top 8 in North America. At six feet, two inches and 190 pounds, Grieco certainly cuts an imposing figure

on the ice. He returns for his second season with the Mid-Atlantic squad in the 41st annual Summer Showcase. "HNIB is one of my favorite tournaments because of the level of competition and ability to play with and against the top players in the country," said Grieco, whose two brothers played in HNIB’s Junior High Festival earlier this month. “I know that last year we had a good run. This year, I hope to develop my game with the great players we have and hope our team goes further and ultimately wins the tournament,” he said. Grieco cites his vision and playmaking as his strongest assets and knows he must become more consistent to advance his game to the next level. That ability to play a complete overall game is why he admires in the Chicago Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews. “He is a great leader and is one of the best offensive and defensive centers in the game,” said Grieco, whose grandfa-

ther Alan and aunt Jessica were both U.S. Olympians. Grieco has developed a close relationship with former HNIB player and Malden Catholic standout Mark “Roo” Adams, a defenseman on Providence College’s 2015 National Championship team. “Mark and I have become really close over the past couple of years and he has had a huge impact on my game. He is someone I look up to and is always there for me with advice. Also, my Dad has definitely had a huge impact on me. He provides me with so much and sacrifices every day so I can play the game I love,” Grieco said. Grieco is not yet certain whether he will take a PG year or travel the Junior hockey path upon graduation from St. Joseph’s. Similarly, he has not yet made a decision regarding college but said, “Playing Division One college hockey would be a dream come true.”

Evan McDonald Will Captain Woburn HS This Upcoming Winter By Kevin Doyle • HNIB

I

t is safe to say that Woburn (MA) High School senior standout Evan McDonald enjoyed his junior season a whole lot more than he did his sophomore campaign. After enduring a rare down year two seasons ago, the Tanners rebounded in a big way, capturing the Middlesex League’s Liberty Division title before advancing to the Division 1A Tournament quarterfinals against Springfield Cathedral. McDonald scored both Woburn goals in the Tanners’ 3-2 loss to Cathedral in the first game of their 1A quarterfinal series, led the Tanners in goals (19) on the season and can’t wait for this season to begin.

HNIB PrOfILe SerIeS “Our goal is to get back to the Super 8. We need to continue to work together as a family because without that high level of teamwork this (past) year we would never have reached our full potential,” he said. “I am anticipating taking on a stronger leadership role as one of the captains on the team. I am looking forward to being a positive role model and helping my teammates to recognize and highlight their individual talents,” McDonald added. McDonald relishes his role as a playmaker for Woburn. “My strengths include seeing the ice and moving the puck. I like to consider myself a playmaker, always looking to promote the highest level of teamwork with the players around me. My goals are a result of hard-working play from each member of my line. I look forward to getting back on the ice with Tim Doherty and Justin Alves next year working to achieve even more than we did this year,” he said. In order to elevate his game, McDonald understands the need to become more of a presence on defense and to stay on the ice. “I need to improve my defensive zone play, which includes getting the puck out of the zone. I also need to improve my ability to think quickly on my feet in order to keep the momentum moving. Finally, one of my personal goals is to stay out of the penalty box in order to maximize my time on the ice,” he said. McDonald admires the Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane’s hockey sense, quick hands and ability to “turn an average play into a highlight reel goal. He has won three Stanley Cups and who doesn’t dream of doing that as a kid?” McDonald credits his dad as well as one of his former coaches in the Jr. Warriors’ program as his biggest influences. page 38

To this day I can picture him yelling ‘move your feet’ and ‘pass the puck’ and those basic fundamentals have helped to make me the player I am today.” McDonald returns for his second Summer Showcase with the Middlesex/Merrimack squad and is anticipating a strong tournament. “I know this team consists of a great group of talented hockey players both on and off the ice. I look forward to all of us getting together to put a strong team on the ice and hopefully emerge as the tournament champions,” he said. He is not yet sure whether he will take a PG year or play Juniors next season but is keeping his options open. Beyond that? “I would love to continue to play hockey while attending college in New England. It has always been my dream to play Division 1 hockey in Hockey East,” said McDonald, who plans to study either Mechanical or Architectural Engineering.

ike Snow is looking forward with anticipation. While the transition from prep school to the Junior Hockey ranks last year proved challenging, Snow said those struggles will have him ready when he joins the Valley Jr. Warriors of the Eastern Hockey League this season. “It was rough, going from Prep School hockey to a full-season team,” Snow admitted. “I felt like I should have had a much better season, but all I can do is learn from it and move forward. I look forward to my season with Valley Jr. Warriors and coach (Andy) Heinze. I have already skated with him and a few players and am excited to get the season started.” Looking back, Snow, who will play again this summer for Greater Boston, said it was a tough decision to leave Lawrence Academy. “I'm extremely proud of Robbie Barker and the Athletic Department over there for what they are going to accomplish. It felt like I would be graduated before Lawrence would be a contender again; it was the most difficult decision to make,” Snow said.

“Whatever it takes: trying to score, passing the puck off or playing defense. The goal is to win and improve, but it takes everyone to accomplish that goal.” -Greater Boston’s Michael Snow A cerebral player with superior puck skills, Snow considers himself a team first type. “Whatever it takes: trying to score, passing the puck off or playing defense. The goal is to win and improve, but it takes everyone to accomplish that goal,” said Snow, who said he needs to improve at playing with pace. “I don't feel like I move my feet as much as I should, I slow the play down a little when I receive the puck. That's not something that is going to help me get to the next level,” explained Snow. He pegs Joe Sakic as his all-time favorite player and All-Star appearances at a tournament in The Netherlands and in the USPHL as his top hockey memories. Snow is skating for the Greater Boston squad in the Summer Showcase, hopeful of putting together a strong tournament that helps build momentum toward his debut campaign with the Warriors. He credits his family for their support, an array of coaches who have helped hone his game through the years, and Billy Gore for overseeing his strength and conditioning program for the past four years. The next step remains undecided. “I am keeping my options open. As of now, my immediate goal is to get to the next level. College is the ultimate goal for anyone who wants to succeed in life. But Junior hockey looks interesting also. I know where I want to be later in life and I'm up for the challenge,” Snow said. He hopes to pursue a degree in Education as a way to “connect with kids and hopefully influence them in a positive way.”

michael Snow returns to lead the greater Boston offensive attack.

Will New Name Bring Increased Success? By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB he newly-named Cape Ann club is looking to be in the mix in the South Division.

T

The team will be coached by Mick Lafata and John Chamberlain, and boast a roster of players primarily from the North Shore area of Massachusetts. The forwards hail from a variety of sources and have the potential to put up some solid numbers.

Senior Garrett Lafata is coming off a solid campaign with Masconomet HS. The same goes for Anthony Mancini, who heads off to Deerfield Academy in the fall, repeating his junior campaign. Also on the move is junior J.T. Chamberlain, bound for Williston Northampton after a decent offensive season at Pingree School. Junior Tyler Calos was a key component up front on a very successful North Reading HS team from this past winter.

ack for its second summer at the HNIB Major Showcase, Team Central looks to be a factor in the North Division race. Returning behind the bench for Central as coach will be Steve Guttadauro. Sure to be vital offensive cogs for Central are post-grad Anthony Cieri (21 pts), taking a year at Brewster Academy

after a fine senior year at Austin Prep, and Jake Karelas (25 pts), headed to Bridgton following a solid career with Melrose HS. New Club Should Compete Right Away By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB aking its HNIB Major Showcase baptism this summer is this version of East Coast, put together by Maine native Matt Lavallee, who will be working this year with the new Seacoast College Prep program out of Exeter, NH. The club should be competive right away, with an array of solid players. At forward, look for talented forward Channing Gorscak to have a big summer. A post-grad, Gorscak racked up big numbers

for the Cyclones U-18 club last year, and moves closer to his Pittsburgh area home to play this winter for the Esmark Stars of the NAPHL. Junior Jestin Somero (92 pts) is another talented forward from the Cyclones organization. Junior Jarod Lavallee will be an offensive dynamo and will play this winter with the new Seacoast College Prep program under the direction of GM Mike Addesa. Experience Will Be Key To Team’s Chances By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB oasting 16 seniors in the lineup, Team Mid-Atlantic will certainly have experience on its side. Long-time coach Geoff Marottolo is also back as head coach of this group, which figures to be a tough opponent. Leaders up front for coach Marottolo project to be senior Jeff Morgan, coming off a successful first-season at Cushing Academy, and senior Ryan Grieco (29 pts) a leading scorer for his St. Joseph (Montvale) club in New Jersey HS hockey.

B

Senior Nick Krasniqi is returning to the HNIB lineup as well and is a teammate of Grieco’s at St Joseph Montvale. Woodbridge HS standout Hunter Spearnock (37 pts), a senior, also played for Mid-Atlantic last summer. In Connecticut, Greenwich HS reached the D1 state final and a big reason why was senior Kristian Cunningham (26 pts). He is back, as is senior Eryk Wielgos, undecided for this winter after playing with the Connecticut Oilers program last summer.

ith a host of talented players up and down the lineup, Team Northeast should be a thorn in its opponents’ side. Returning behind the bench again for Team Northeast is Pat Norton, the veteran head coach at the Tilton School. The team is comprised of players entirely from the states of New Hampshire and Maine. Maine’s Falmouth HS sends two of its top up-and-coming

forwards in the junior tandem of Chris Camelio (36 pts) and Henry Norris (13 goals). Senior Nathaniel John and senior Danato Tempesta are part of a solid offensive nucleus at NH’s Bedford HS. Senior Conor Ryle plays for coach Norton and Tilton and is a returning player for Northeast, as is senior Keith Davis, who plays his hockey at Proctor Academy. Also back in the fold is senior Zach Pelletier (28 pts), fresh off a solid campaign at Manchester’s Memorial HS.

ight in the thick of things here at HNIB the past few summers, Team Philadelphia is hoping they can be right there again in 2015. The team is again put together and coached by Charlie Pens, the director of American Hockey Schools. A key holdover from last year is the rugged Houston Wilson, a senior to be at Vermont Academy who put up an impressive

52-point junior season. Post-grad Collin Wiercinski is another key returner up front; he heads to the Junior Bruins organization after a solid 27-point year at Hill School in Pennsylvania. Senior and Delaware native Conor Cassidy also returns and had 20 points for Kents Hill, where he led the Huskies in scoring. He will be joined there this winter by junior Justin Taylor, who had 33 goals this past winter with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

he Sophomore All Star teams at HNIB usually draw a lot of interest, and this year should be no exception.

The team made up of players who participated in the recent HNIB Sophomore All Star Tournament, will be coached by the veteran tandem of Dan Shine of Arlington Catholic (MA) and Mark Doherty of Reading HS (MA).

The Mid-Atlantic region sends a pair of forwards to keep an eye on in Nicholas Lidondici (84 pts) from the Red Bank Generals program in New Jersey, and John Kondub (77 pts) out of the Connecticut Chiefs U-16 program. From Arlington Catholic comes Anthony Parziale, who hopes to contribute for the Cougars this winter. The same goes for big Cole Kosowski (6’1”, 210) at Acton-Boxboro.

On the blue line, Will Stewart (6’2”) was a huge presence for Sophomore Tournament champion Atlanta and looks to be the same here; he will be at Tabor this winter. Kyle Emery played well at Pingree School as a regular varsity player on defense. Big Owen Borek (6’ 215) takes his talents to Brooks School for the upcoming season. Evan Beers was a bright spot as a ninth grader for his Bishop Fenwick team. Danny Shea is hoping to crack the blue line crew this winter at Arlington

Catholic. Cody DiGregorio saw regular time as a freshman at his St. Peter Marian school (10 pts). Young Elijah Older from the Cardigan Mountain program will make his presnce known. Two forwards return from last summer’s outfit, and senior Ryan Kushay (Loxahatchee, FL) and senior Alex Garcia (Boca Raton, FL) hope to be big contributors to the cause. Senior Jake Levy projects to move from the Empire Hawks to the Elite Hawks for the upcoming season. Junior Stefano Mallardi will be a newcomer to the Hawks program as he had a 44-point season with the Florida Alliance AAA squad last winter.

Mason Babbidge, a native of Alabama, will return to the Hawks Elite Division club for another year, as will post-grad Paul Paduano, who hails from Pembroke Pines, FL. Senior Eddie Sellian should be another player that will make his debut this winter with the Palm Beach Hawks Elite club. Senior Chris Melendez plays his winter hockey for the Florida Alliance organization. Post-grad Costa Pizanis played his hockey last winter with the Delaware Ducks and is a resident of Maryland. Junior upand-comer Daniel Hammer, Jr heads to Palm Beach after a season with the Atlanta Jr. Knights. On the blue line, junior Chase Lieblein is a returning South Florida performer and that year of experience will be a big plus. Solid Work-Ethic Will Be A Plus By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB lways one of the hardest-working teams in the HNIB Showcase, it is Suburban’s aim to be competitive in what looks like a tough National Division. Veteran coach Gary Bishop, who led his Bishop Guertin club to a New Hampshire D-1 state title this past season, is back to lead the Suburban fortunes again this summer. Up front, coach Bishop will be looking for offensive production from the likes of senior Will Ahearn, one of the leaders at
