HOCKEY NIGHT IN BOSTON By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB
H
ockey Night In Boston welcomes you to our 43rd annual Summer Showcase being held again this year at the Valley Forum, a beautiful two-rink facility in Haverhill, MA (25 miles north of Boston). Action in the 18-team Summer Showcase begins on Wednesday, July 26th with a unique format sure to please the scouts in attendance. Each of the 18 teams will each play five games against five different opponents over a three-day period. College, Junior, Prep and NHL Scouts will be able to see prospects play two times each day on Thursday and Friday against different opponents. Four select teams of Massachusetts /RI top players – Greater Boston, South Shore/RI, North Shore, Middlesex/Merrimack _ were chosen in April/May. Players were invited by the HNIB staff based upon their previous winter’s scholastic hockey season and HNIB participation. The 34th annual New YorkConnecticut-Mid-Atlantic camp featuring over 85 players took place from June 1618. The players competed for spots on
HNIB’s 43rd ANNuAl sHowcAse two teams in the HNIB Showcase: Mid Atlantic and Connecticut/NY. Gilmour Academy (OH) hockey director John Malloy helped put together a club from the Midwest region The Midwest team will feature many players from the State of Ohio. Over 110 skaters signed up for the 33rd annual Northern New England camp in Haverhill, MA from June 9th -11th. The result was two select teams, Northern New England and Northeast, that represent players from Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Late in June, 40-45 players were drafted from the HNIB High School Division tryouts for participation in the major showcase (from a turnout of 100 partcipants), including a whole Suburban entry. Nineteen teams of sophomores (over 325 players) competed in the gigantic and unique HNIB Sophomore All-Star Tournament from July 9-14. Also,
ping stone to their initial exposure at HNIB. The final Sophomore All Stars was chosen after the tournament’s All-Star Games on July 14th. Returning at HNIB this summer are two major teams - Southern, put together by Tim Kyrkostas of the Islanders HC, and Mass West, put together by Kevin Kervick of the Springfield Rifles program. East Coast, compiled by coach Matt Lavallee, should be competitive once again. Team NJ/Metro will feature players from several different states, put together by Brian Monteverdi. Back to defend its Showcase championship are the Canadian Preps, put together by James LeBlanc. The team was very impressive last summer. The New England Sharks return with a solid team that could challenge. And, a team that features a nice nucleus of players from Sweden - the Sweden/Selects - will be an interesting over 275 junior high players partici- view in their first appearance at the pated in their own festival as a step- HNIB Showcase.

Merrimack College The Choice For Young lege players. “My team next year will have a lot of talent and will definitely push me harder than ever. Making a team is based only on skill level and not if you can pay for it. This will bring in more talent throughout the league. On top of all of this my team will be defending the Dineen Cup. It's going to be a great season,” Young said.
“Right off the bat Coach (Mark) Dennehy and Coach (Curtis) Carr made me feel at home. Throughout my whole recruiting period they were the two coaches who wanted me the most and came after me the hardest.” - NE Sharks forward Jonathan Young

he recruiting pressure is off for Jonathan Young, who has already committed to Merrimack College for the 2018-19 academic year. It was logical choice. As one who came up through the ranks for the Islanders’ HC – who call Gallant Arena at The Volpe Complex home – Young was eminently familiar with the school, the program and the coaching staff. “Right off the bat Coach (Mark) Dennehy and Coach (Curtis) Carr made me feel at home. Throughout my whole recruiting period they were the two coaches who wanted me the most and came after me the hardest,” Young said. “I already felt comfortable at Merrimack because I have been playing games there most of my life and will be playing out off there next year. The facilities are top of the line and I truly feel like I will be able to take my game to the next level in the years I'm there,” he continued. He has long modeled his game after Bruins’ star Patrice Bergeron. “He's a very good playmaker and can create scoring chances from anywhere on the ice. He's a very good leader and can put the team on his back and turn a game around. Another thing I really like about his game is his defensive ability; he really perfects the role of the center being a third defenseman,” Young explained. At 6-2, 194 pounds, Young blends power forward size with superb vision and strong skating. He tallied 16 goals and 50 points for the Islanders’ 16U team last winter. “I feel that I need to be more patient with the puck and know when to hold onto it. Other than that it's just confidence with the puck, which will come as I keep playing,” said Young, whose most memorable moment on the ice was winning the EHF league in his U14 year with the Islanders under coach Kim Brandvold. He credits his parents for their commitment to his development. “My parents have definitely been my biggest influences from the very beginning. They have always told me to follow my dreams. All the hours that they have spent bringing me to games and practices hasn't gone unnoticed,” said Young of Pelham, NH. “They have sacrificed a lot for me and I'm very thankful. I have also been influenced by all of my past coaches and strength trainers.” He is look forward to his third Summer Showcase appearance with the New England Sharks team assembled by Chris Fitzgerald. After that, the focus will be on honing his overall game before heading to Merrimack and the rigors of Hockey East. “I definitely feel like Merrimack is the perfect fit for me. I don't think I could have gone anywhere else and been as happy with the choice,” Young concluded.

North Shore’s Maribito Relishes State Title Run By Kevin Doyle • HNIB

ante Maribito’s high school career could not have ended on a higher note. A year after the disappointment of an OT loss to Franklin in the 2016 Massachusetts Division One title game, Maribito and his St. Mary’s mates made the most of their second chance when they toppled Framingham, 4-2, this past March to claim the first State title in program history. Maribito, who scored twice in the win, said immediately after the game: “This is the best feeling ever. I’ve been here four years and to have my last game be a State championship win is unbelievable.”

Middlesex/Merrimack’s Brendan Maloney Set For New Prep School Challenge
B
By Kevin Doyle • HNIB
rendan Maloney, the former Malden Catholic defenseman, was making the rounds of the usual “target” schools last winter, seeking the proper fit for his PG year. And then he visited Berkshire. Game over. “I was just overwhelmed with the campus and the athletic facilities. I thought Berkshire was second to none. Nick Botticelli, a very close friend and former teammate of mine at MC was attending school there at the time and he gave me a really good insight to campus life and the hockey program and I just fell in love with the school. I’m thrilled to be going there,” said Maloney. “Coach Dan Driscoll really made me feel very welcomed and emphasized how much
he would like me to be part of the hockey program and I felt very comfortable with everything he had to say,” he added. Maloney, who plays in the Fall Prep League, said he understands the high-end talent level of the prep school game but feels he is prepared for the next level thanks to four years of elite competition at MC and anticipates a relatively seamless transition. “We played against BC High and St. John’s Prep as well as [New Jersey power] Delbarton and those were “high pressure” games. We had some really good players at MC over the last four years and had a lot of success winning the Super 8 and the Catholic Conference. Every team wanted to play us and they brought their best game against us, there was no easy game on our schedule, so I think I am ready for the next level,” he said.

Maloney’s maturation has been steady as he became quicker and stronger as he got older. He said one college scout described him a “late bloomer.” He logged extensive time on MC’s special teams as a junior and senior and accounted for six goals and 11 points in his final season with the Lancers. “My freshman and sophomore year I got to watch many other good players and I learned a lot from them, and then my junior and senior years I got a lot of ice time. You have to always continue to develop your basic skills like skating, passing and shooting because everything gets quicker at the next level. I hope to continue to develop my overall game as I get more experience. I want to be stronger on the puck and develop more grit because the game gets tougher as you get older,” he explained. Maloney Excited To Move On To Berkshire (Continued From Page 24)
For Maloney, the Ottawa Senators’ Erik Karlsson is the quintessential modern day defenseman and a player worth emulating “because of the way he approaches the game and carries the puck with such determination and skill.” The memory of MC’s 2-1 OT win against St. John’s Prep for the 2016 Division 1A (Super 8) Tournament championship remains his most memorable moment because it avenged MC’s 2015’s 2-1 loss to the Prep in the title game. “We were the first MC team to lose the championship in five seasons, so it was very important for us to come back the next season and win it,” he said. Among those who have influenced Maloney during his career, MC coach John McLean stands out. “He taught me a lot about how to play defense but more importantly he taught me how important it was to be mentally prepared for every game. There was no taking a game or practice off at MC, you had to be ready all the time,” Maloney said. He is hoping for a strong performance this week with the Middlesex/Merrimack squad to showcase himself for college coaches and to get a jump on preparation for the coming year at Berkshire. An honors student at MC, he is open-minded about college but will seek the best academic and athletic fit. He has yet to settle on an area of study “but I understand it will probably be the most important decision I make in my life up to this point.”
Maribito Looks For Big Summer (Continued From Page 23)
“He excels in every aspect of the game. There isn't any situation the Bruins don't use him in. He's the type of player I want to become,” he said. Maribito credits his parents, Mark Lee and the St. Mary’s staff, and St. John’s Prep assistant Scott Hentosh for his success. “My parents always have supported me throughout my hockey career. My dad has always been a coach for me even when he's not on the bench. The St. Mary's coaches all helped me develop into the player I am today, and gave me the tools and advice I
needed to become a leader. Coach Scott was such a great coach growing up. He taught me a lot of what I know about hockey and influenced how I play even now,” he said. His goals for this year’s Summer Showcase? Simple – enjoy the experience while Team North Shore seeks a championship. Maribito – St. Mary’s MVP, a Catholic Central League All-Star and an AllScholastic selection by both Boston newspapers – is keeping his college options open at this point.

f defenseman Nolan McElhaney had his way, the prep school hockey season would start in September. The Cushing senior is ready to play for legendary coach Steve Jacobs, who returns for a second tour on the Penguins’ bench this winter. “My expectations for the upcoming season are very high,” said McElhaney, who grew up in Yorba Linda, CA but now resides in Natick, MA. “ And with the D-core we have returning. I believe we will go far in the Elite 8 playoffs.” “I have met with coach Jacobs a few times. I am super excited for what's to come and what I'm going to learn from a coach like him,” he added. McElhaney characterizes himself as the guy who leads by example. “I see myself as not the loud, talkative leader but the one who shows everyone how they need to compete on and off the ice every day and show them what it takes to get to the next level,” he said. Long and lean at 6-3 and 175 pounds, McElhaney tallied five goals and 15 points a season ago. Expect those numbers to increase. “My strengths as a player are my offensive ability and how, if needed, I can be a shut down defenseman. I also think my shot and my skating ability are strengths,” he said. “I need to work on getting stronger in the gym and I have to learn to jump up in the play at the right time.”

It should come as no surprise that he studies the Boston Bruins’ unflappable rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who burst onto the NHL scene with a stellar performance in the Bruins’ first-round loss to Ottawa in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs. “He is my favorite because he is the guy I play my game after. He is my idol and I try to play exactly like him,” McElhaney said. Among hockey memories, a recent one stands out – playing against his brother Kyle for the first time in prep school. McElhaney points out that Cushing defeated Tilton that February day, 4-0. He also had a goal, making the win that much sweeter. McElhaney said his skating coach Mike Bickley in California has played a key role in advancing his career. “He always helped me get to the next step in my skating and always treated me like I was in the NHL. It was nice,” McElhaney noted. South Shore/Rhode Island reached the Summer Showcase semifinals last year. McElhaney will have a couple of familiar running mates this year – his Cushing teammate Andy Ide and his kid brother Kyle. As do most players, McElhaney said he has a top five list of preferred colleges and is hopeful of signing on with a Hockey East school. Regardless of how that process ultimately plays out, he plans to pursue a degree in either Finance or Economics.

hen it came right down to it, committing to Northeastern University last November for Fall 2019 made perfect sense for Jordan Harris. “Choosing Northeastern was a no-brainer for me after getting to know the coaching staff and how they believed in me as a player and person. The combination of the level of hockey, winning reputation, academics, and school location drew me in completely. Growing up not far from Boston (in Haverhill), I knew of the many great things local players have done at the school and its tradition for having Massachusetts players,” Harris said. The 17-year-old left shot defenseman expressed relief in having another step in his future mapped out. “(It) allows me to concentrate on getting better on an off the ice,” he said. He played a major role in helping Kimball Union Academy claim the New England Elite championship last season, notching seven goals and 26 points. He has 12-3547 totals over two varsity seasons. He is looking forward to this coming season and anticipates an expanded leadership role. “The goal of our team will be to continue playing at a high level, such as we have done in the past. Personally, it would be great to become more of a leader on the team, whether it's a captain position or just leading by example,” he said. Harris considers himself to be a solid two-way defenseman who skates well, possesses an active
stick and is able to move pucks and join the play at the offensive end. He said improving his offensive zone reads and getting more pucks to the net are areas of focus. “I enjoy watching players like Duncan Keith, who play a similar style to myself, because there are many aspects of their game that I try to emulate in mine,” he explained. Winning the 2017 Prep championship at KUA tops his list of hockey memories. “Just the way our team pulled through together and was able to accomplish a feat not many are able to do is something I cherish and appreciate greatly,” he said. The unwavering support of his parents has been crucial to his success and has not gone unnoticed. “My parents have been incredibly influential in my hockey career so far. Their support coupled with my dad being on the bench for countless years as I grew up have caused me to appreciate all the sacrifices they have made to let me play the game I love,” he said. He looks forward to another goround with the New England Sharks at this year’s Summer Showcase. “I have played already with many of the guys on the team and it's always fun to see some old friends. I'm looking forward to the tournament because it’s usually a blast to play in,” he said. With two years remaining before he has to entertain such a decision, Harris is understandably unsure about a potential course of study at Northeastern, although he is interested in both pre-med and business.

he 2016 HNIB Summer Showcase couldn’t have gone much better for Alex Gagnon, who was named a tournament MVP while helping the Canadian Preps squad capture the title. “The 2016 Showcase blended in nicely between my seasons. It served as a trampoline, from my Midget AAA season to prep school hockey. It gave me a better feel for prep school hockey,” said Gagnon. Gagnon, from Dorval, QUE, considered his first year at Holderness to be successful across the board. “The year in perspective was a good year for me while discovering prep school life. As a senior, I would like to expand my role as a leader on the ice and off the ice. Holderness is a great place to develop leadership skills through many initiatives. As such, I will have the opportunity to expand my leadership role as a floor dorm leader at Holderness in the upcoming year,” said Gagnon, who is working as a lifeguard/swimming monitor this summer in Dorval. He is hopeful his varied off-ice leadership roles translate to the hockey season as Holderness seeks to improve on its

He said his defensive zone coverage requires improvement and he needs to become more engaged physically. His favorite NHL player is Chicago’s Patrick Kane “for his ability to create space and his impact on the power play.” Gagnon’s most memorable moments include winning the Jimmy Ferrari Cup in Quebec Midget AAA hockey as a member of Lions du Lac-St. Louis, then helping the team go on to earn a bronze medal at the Telus Cup Nationals. Inspiration and guidance have come in many forms from many people. “I am grateful to cross paths with many inspiring people such as my teachers, my coaches, and my parents who exemplify perseverance, courage and passion in what they do and what they believe in,” Gagnon said. Though not familiar with this year’s Canadian Preps roster, he is eager to meet his mates for the coming week and said “I’ll enjoy competing for the title ALEX GAGNON OF THE CANADIAN PREPS TEAM WON BOTH AN MVP AND PRO PROSPECT AWARD AT LAST SuMMER’S once again.”

NNE’s Cam Wilson Decides Prep Hockey Route Best

n making the decision to attend Kent’s Hill after wrapping up his successful career for the Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth co-op in Maine, Cam Wilson sought the answer to a fundamental question. “It's a confusing road. There is always a choice between juniors and prep, and within that you have to consider a key thing about any hockey program on either side: ‘Is it a program where I will continue to develop and grow as a hockey player?’” Wilson asked. The answer became clear once he met Kents Hill coach Doug Friedman, a 2016 Maine Sports Hall of Fame inductee and former Boston University captain. “Coach Friedman, on top of his experience and connections, I believe prioritizes making his players better which not only wins games but moves players onto the teams they want make,” Wilson said. Academics were equally prominent in his decision.

“Another important part of being a hockey player striving to make a college team is how you present yourself to those colleges. If you are not only a top hockey player, but an Ivy school worthy student, it makes getting a commitment or gaining the attention of schools that much easier,” Wilson explained. Advance preparation should ease the transition from Maine Class A to the prep school pace of play. “I'm doing whatever I can in my power to prepare myself for that shift. I've played with and against many other guys in that league and I'm confident I will be able to compete with the best in that league,” he said. Wilson shifted from defense to forward as a senior at Cony and had the lone goal in a2-1 loss to Bangor in the Class A North semifinals. He said shifting positions at multiple junctures throughout his career has helped him to develop a natural feel for both. He finished with 14 goals and 25 points last season, was a finalist for the Travis Roy award emblematic of Maine’s top Class A player and was chosen Kennebec Journal Player of the Year. While preparation, skating and a commitment to two-way play are obvious strengths, Wilson said the ability to listen sets him apart. “One thing that I have always felt I excelled at was listening to what coaches say and executing it as best I can next shift. Many coaches (including my

He admires the Nashville Predators’ P.K. Subban for his contributions on and off the ice. “Who doesn't love a guy like P.K. Subban? He has unreal speed and an even faster slap shot. There isn't a time that guy's enthusiasm isn’t giving his team a boost. I really look up to a guy who not only dominates, but also gives back to his community – Subban pledged $10 million to a children's hospital back in Montreal. Subban is someone who makes the NHL great and I'm not sure why he has so many critics,” Wilson said. His parents, along with Ben Gray of the Maine Moose, have been Wilson’s biggest influences. “My dad is the reason I started playing. He has given me the most advice and always made sure that, as long as I want to, I can continue to play the sport I love. I don't think I would be the hockey player I am today without my mom. Besides suf-
fering through some brutal road trips, she has shown me how to actually have an off-season and I thank her for that,” he said. “Coach Gray has taught me almost all my thinking hockey skills and how to be a marketable player. Any elite or high end team you see me playing for is because of him,” said Wilson, adding that “Adam Nichols at Stride Envy completely redesigned my stride when I was younger. I credit him with all of my skating ability.” Wilson expects Northern New England will be competitive as usual this week. “The coaching is always, I believe, some of the best. What I intend to gain from the tournament is some exposure to college teams and junior scouts. Also, I always look forward to having my game honed by the coaching staff,” he said. While Wilson harbors a desire to play at the University of Maine, he is certainly opento any and all possibilities. “UMO is my local D1 school. I grew up watching games there, and my father played there. After that I would love to play for any good college program,” he said.

ollowing his successful career at St. John’s Prep, two-time Catholic Conference All-Star defenseman Christian Kukas is bound for a PG campaign at Phillips Andover. CHRISTIAN KuKAS It was an easy choice for the National NORTH SHORE BLuELINER Honor Society student. “Phillips Academy has an outstanding history of academic and athletic excellence. After visiting the campus and going through the admissions process, I felt very at home at the school. Plus, it’s only 15 minutes away from my house, so if I ever need anything or want to go home for a weekend, it’s not too much of a hassle,” Kukas said. Kukas, an SJP captain this past season, will be joined by a couple of familiar faces for the coming year at PA – in fellow SJP captain Kyle Hentosh and former St. Mary’s standout Dante Maribito. “ I’ve been playing with Kyle and Dante since I was very young on the Greater Boston Vipers. We always enjoyed our time together on the team and, in my opinion, have a very strong chemistry between us. It will be great to be back on the ice with them,” Kukas noted. After playing prep school hockey as a freshman and sophomore before returning to SJP, Kukas has an idea of what to expect on the ice in regards to pace of play. “I expect play to be similar to that of a St. John’s vs. Malden Catholic game, constantly up and down the ice, physical, and fast paced. I have an idea of what it’ll be like, but it will be different to see it from the point of view of a postgraduate,” he said. Among NHL defensemen, Kukas is a fan of the multi-faceted Duncan Keith’s ability to impact play in a number of way. In regards to his own game, Kukas considers his wrist shot and willingness to take the body as strengths. He strives to “keep improving my mind for the game.” Kukas said his most memorable moment was this past February’s annual 1st Lieutenant Derek Hines Memorial Game. Hines, a captain at both SJP and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Hines lost his life in September 2005 while serving in Afghanistan. Proceeds from the game benefit the Soldiers Assistance Fund. It’s a very special game for the Hines Family, the school, and the team. I’ve never seen a group of guys more ready to go out and play a game. They take the meaning of the game to heart and try to do everything they can to help win the game. It’s a very special occasion when that game comes around. This year, with the new rink and locker room, a stall was dedicated to the memory of 1st Lieutenant Derek Hines and being able to be a part of that

He credits his parents for his success to date. “They instilled in me a “never say die” spirit and I continue to keep that mentality today. I treat every shift like it’s my last because you really never know when that last one will be,” he said. Kukas is looking forward to his third Showcase as a member of the North Shore squad. “It’s some of the most fun I have all summer. The group of guys that are picked for the team are real quality guys who want to go out and win the tournament. I’m hoping to get some good exposure, get a good skate to stay in shape, and just have a great time with a great group of guys,” he said.

t will, in all likelihood, be forever referred to as “The Goal” in any future discussions of Arlington High School hockey. When senior Mic Curran’s odd-angle strike 15 seconds into overtime delivered a 2-1 win against Central Catholic in March for the Spy Ponders’ first Massachusetts Division 1A championship, the sudden finish took a moment to register. Whether Curran meant to put a shot on goal or was looking for a teammate crashing from the weak side is moot. After collecting a loose puck on the rear wall, he swung behind the Central cage and sent a backhander toward the crease that heeled in off Central sophomore goalie Matt Pasquale’s left skate. While Curran grasped the significance of the moment, it took weeks to fully comprehend the enormity of its impact on a program and community rich in hockey tradition that had won six previous State titles, but none since 1971. “My first thoughts were ‘We just made history.’ The stands were full with alumni from teams that had almost won or alum-
ni from the most recent team to win States for Arlington High School. I immediately knew how much that win would mean to them and as I learned through Facebook for the next few weeks that win meant more to the alumni than I could possibly understand,” said Curran, who had 17 goals and 51 points and was The Boston Globe Player of the Year. Curran is one of six members of the state title team playing with the Greater Boston entry this summer at HNIB, where they will try to relive the magic and lead the club to an HNIB title. He is joined by Johnny Pigott, and Cam Ryan, both of whom will head to Tilton School in the fall, as well as returning forward Dara Conneely (junior), defenseman Jack Simon (junior) and goaltender Jack Pinard (senior). Additionally, sophomores Anthony Messuri and Drew Malatesta, both of whom saw regular time as ninth-graders, will be with the Sophomore All Star squad in this tournament. (Continued On Page 33)

Defenseman Simon had an on-ice view of the game-winner – and still couldn’t believe it. “I was lined up on left defense at the beginning of the overtime, and I remember Mic winning the faceoff by passing back to my right to Matt Hart, my D partner. Matt dumped the puck in, and I remember watching Mic chase after it and win the battle. I saw him shoot the puck from apparently behind the goal line. I suddenly saw Mic put his hands up, and then Peter Scheschareg did, too, and I thought, ‘No way.’ Once I saw the puck in the back of the goal, the focus and the adrenaline was replaced by a feeling that flushed over me,” Simon said.
“It was everything I imagined it would be. It’s so hard to describe this feeling; at first it was as though it wasn’t real, as though it wasn’t happening to me. It was pure joy that never left. I always believed that we could win, but now that we actually had, the feeling was surreal.” - Defenseman Jack simon

Being able to rush to my teammates and celebrate on The Garden ice is something that I will never forget,” he said. “It was a pretty crazy feeling once Mic scored the final goal. Garden to watch the Super 8 final since we were 6. Every time I went I wondered what it feels like and now I know how great of an experience it is,” added returning junior Conneely. To get their title shot, the Spy Ponders knocked off defending 1A champion Malden Catholic in double overtime in the semifinals, 2-1. Curran gave them a 1-0 lead in that one and senior Kevin Ouellette delivered the game-winner. Arlington swept Hingham in the best-of-three quarterfinal series, outscoring the Harbormen, 8-2. All About Chemistry In his post-game remarks, Arlington coach John Messuri spoke at length about the commitment by players to remain and play at Arlington as a key component of the Spy Ponders’ success when several could have left early for the prep school and junior ranks. Arlington became just the fourth non-Catholic Conference school – and third public – to win the D1A crown, joining Hingham (2010), Reading (2008) and Arlington Catholic (1997). “The chemistry (was) unreal, from the on-ice communication and passing to the friendships we had in the locker room and outside of hockey; we all have each other's backs,” said returning senior goalie Pinard, who stopped 21 shots in the title game. “Winning the Super 8 tops everything I've ever done in hockey.” (Continued On Page 34)

Curran said the season-ending team banquet drove home just how long the core group had been together. “We had pictures from our mite teams when we all first started playing hockey. I thought that those pictures really put into perspective just how long this team has been coming together. The chemistry and friendship all started the same time we started skating. After all those years we knew when it counted, like in overtime of the semifinals and finals, we could count on each other,” he said.

When DiD they KnoW? At what point did the players sense they had a championship-caliber team? Curran and Piggott pinpointed a 2-1 January win against then-undefeated Pope Francis “The moment that stands out to me is our win against Pope Francis, a tie game with just over a minute left. We lost the faceoff but a good forecheck got us the puck and two shots on net later Peter (Scheschareg) put home a rebound. The mental toughness it took to win that game against a team that at the time hadn't lost proved there wasn't a team in the State we couldn't play with,” Curran said. “Beating Pope Francis in our rink was a major moment in our season. At the time they were undefeated and we knew from that point forward we could beat anyone. At the end of the game it got a little heated and we all had each other's backs, so we all knew from that game that we could do it,” Piggott noted. Ryan, meanwhile, said he had been anticipating this type of success for some time. “Since middle school, we knew the group coming into Arlington High was solid, but I knew my soph(Continued On Page 35)

my sophomore year was the year to make a run for the rings,” he said. Pinard and Simon felt the tone was set early on. “Ever since preseason workouts and tryouts I could tell we had a special group. Our captains put us on the right direction to accomplish what we have,” said Pinard. “Coach Messuri always knew that we had the potential for a great team this year, and truth be told, he called it on Day One of tryouts, when with full conviction, he said, ‘Guys, I think we have a team that can win the Super 8.’ Honestly, at the time, I looked at him as though he was crazy,” Simon admitted. “Coach Mazoo got the impression in our heads that we could play with anybody and could beat anybody. From the first day of tryouts we all knew as a team we could do it,” Conneely said.

Piggott, a Boston Herald All-Scholastic, is headed to Tilton for a PG year; Curran will skate in the junior ranks as a PG; and Ryan has opted to leave Arlington in favor of Tilton. Pinard (8 shutouts, 21 goals allowed), a Boston Globe All-Scholastic, Simon (19 points) Conneely (12-16-28) return to lead Arlington this coming season and have high expectations. They too will skate for Greater Boston this week. “What we accomplished this season is in the past; our team has already turned the page and is getting ready for next year. As for expectations we are gunning for that state title that everyone is after,” said Pinard. (Continued On Page 37)
“Seacoast College Prep is the most comprehensive college preparatory junior program to date, designed for the serious minded student/ hockey player that will be friendly to high school coaches and ultimately a culmination of comprehensive youth development. We encourage you to contact us to learn more information about our program, objectives and opportunities” - Mike Addesa & Kurt Mallett
Program Highlights: • On-ice skills development & system training • Monitored off-ice strength training including yoga & cycle spin classes • Disciplined life skills culture that includes mentorship in nutrition, lifestyle and education “There are many reasons why I chose the Seacoast College Prep junior program over other junior programs in the area. Due to the efforts of the coaching staff, I have talked with more college coaches and been on more college visits this season than in my three years of prep school hockey and one year of juniors combined. Also, the practice and training schedules are more serious. Our workouts, spin class, yoga and stretching sessions help us get stronger and stay at the top of our conditioning throughout the season. Finally, with the way the program is set up, the organization is focused on advancing players to the college level and is focused on each and every player’s success.”

Arlington Championship Truly A Memorable Run (Continued From Page 35)
“In terms of tangible goals, we want to win the Middlesex League and then see what we can build on from there. The mission is to build the most unstoppable team that we can be between now and the end of next season. Last year, we had all the pieces to win, and the task was to build chemistry and create a group where everyone bought in to achieve the end goal. This year, I think we already have the chemistry, so the challenge is going to be developing a third and fourth line of forwards and playing strong on defense. I’m excited, because despite our losing nine seniors, I’m confident that we’ll be contenders again come March,” Simon elaborated. “The expectations are to first win the Middlesex League and see where that takes us. We have a lot of underclassmen who are going to be ready to contribute a lot this coming season,” Conneely said. Among them are sophomores Messuri and Malatesta, who, with their varsity experience already, will become go-to offensive stars for the Spy Ponders. The future, it seems, remains very bright. Both players will be key cogs in the lineup for the Sophomore All Stars.

s it turns out, the decision to attend Phillips Andover for a PG year was relatively easy for former St. John’s Prep standout Kyle Hentosh. “My ambition to play college hockey led me to my decision – it gives me another year of exposure. Also, my former (St. John’s) teammates Kyle Lynch and Kyle Martin both went there which gave me good insight into how Andover works and also the chance for coach (Paul) Tortorella to see me play at St. John's,” said Hentosh. Hentosh, an SJP captain as a senior, was named team MVP and Salem News Player of the Year. He joins fellow St. John’s Prep graduate Christian Kukas and former St. Mary’s star Dante Maribito, both North Shore teammates this summer, in Andover’s incoming PG class. “I think it will be really fun to play with
both Christian and Dante. We grew up playing together so the comfort level will be there and I expect us to contribute a lot to the team,” Hentosh said. Thanks to his extensive experience playing for the Northshore Wings, Hentosh expects a relatively smooth transition to prep school play. “I expect the games will just be a little bit faster and all decisions will have to be made quicker. I have played against many prep school players playing for the Wings so I am used to playing at a higher speed,” he explained. A superb passer, Hentosh racked up 48 career assists for the Eagles. The son of SJP assistant coach Scott Hentosh, he combines a high-end hockey IQ with an unyielding work ethic. He said improving both his shot and strength will be crucial to continued success.
He admires Sidney Crosby’s skill set and ability to win but said “I feel like Connor McDavid could take his spot as my favorite player in the near future.” Hentosh’s two favorite hockey memories both occurred during Massachusetts’ prestigious 1A Tournament. He played a key role as a sophomore with seven goals and 19 points as the Eagles claimed the 2015 1A crown. As a junior he scored the Series-clinching OT goal against Burlington in the quarterfinal round. He credits his success to his parents and his extended SJP hockey family: “My mom, Dawn, for shaping me into a nice and well rounded person and my dad, Scott, and the rest of the Prep coaching staff including Kristian Hanson and Dave Hennessey for developing me into the player I am today.” Hentosh again skates for the North Shore team in this year’s Summer Showcase. Aside from joining his mates Kukas and Maribito for a PA prequel, he doesn’t know much about the squad. “What I'm looking to gain from the tournament is being able to get on the ice and stay fresh throughout the summer and look to improve my game,” he said,

hile Pat Mullowney may not have known quite what to expect when he chose to forego his final season at Newton North High School in favor of attending Choate a year ago, it’s clear he’s pleased by how he met the challenge. “I really enjoyed my first year and playing for coach Pat Dennehy. The competition in the Founders League is incredible – you have to bring your best every game. It was definitely a big jump coming from Newton North and it took me a little bit to get used to the faster pace but I thought I had a very solid year,” he said. “Academically it was a big change for me as well. Choate is a very hard school. I was studying all the time!” With a year under his belt and a familiar routine in place, Mullowney is eager for the coming season. Choate returns most of its top players and has set qualifying for the Elite 8 Tournament as a goal. “I can’t wait for the season to get started. We should have a very strong team. We have a great group of guys who all get along together both on and off the ice. Unfortunately, our record wasn’t great last year but we were in just about every game. I think we learned what it takes to win consistently in the Founders League and we will build off that,” he said. Mullowney battled puck luck last season but remains confident in his offense and anticipates increased production this winter. “I play my best when I have the puck on my stick. Although my goal production was down a bit last season, I had lots of chances to score but I was a little snake-bitten and couldn’t find the back of the net. I am working very hard on my shot this summer,” he said. Mullowney said he’s working hard to build leg strength this summer in order to develop more explosiveness so “I can separate with the puck a little quicker.” He admires Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby and is emphatic about the Conn Smythe winner’s status in the pantheon of NHL stars. “ With all due respect to Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr, Crosby is the greatest hockey player that I have ever seen. I could watch him play every night. He seems to bring it every time he steps on the ice,” Mullowney assessed. When it comes to memorable moments, Mullowney cites his game-winner in Newton North’s 3-2 double OT win against Braintree in the 2016 Massachusetts Division I South Sectional quarterfinals. It was North’s first win against Braintree in more than 15 years and, Mullowney said, “put Newton North hockey back on the map. He recognizes just how instrumental his parents have been in his success. “They both work very hard and have always told me that if you work hard that anything is possible. That is the biggest reason why I work so hard on my hockey. I know that if I keep working hard that good things are going to happen,” he said.

Mullowney played for Greater Boston in the past two Summer Showcase tournaments, but slides over to Mass West this year. “I will definitely miss playing on the Greater Boston team this year but I am also really excited about playing for coach (Kevin) Kervick on the Mass West team. I will be playing with a lot of really good players including some of my Choate teammates so it should be a really fun tournament. I definitely think we have a chance to win the whole thing,” he said. In regards to college, Mullowney has received some preliminary interest from both Division 1 and Division 3 programs. I haven’t made a decision yet. The bottom line is that I want to go to a good school and play for a coach that believes that I am good enough to make a difference in his hockey program,”said Mullowney. He plans to study finance and hopes to one day work for a hedge fund.

Senior ryan murray from LaSalle Institute (NY) returns to the club after a 60-point season. Keep an eye on senior Jared thomas, a solid prospect from South Glens Falls HS (NY). The Connecticut/NY defense will be a strongpoint, led by returning senior Josh bliss from Holderness School via West Charlton, NY. Both seniors Anthony trigilio and matthew bielinski patrol the blue line for Williamsville North.
Junior Curtis Adam birthwright, a native of Rochester, keeps opposing forwards honest at Portsmouth Abbey School. Junior Zachary henkin is hoping to open some eyes; he plays for the Jr. Wolfpack in Connecticut. Two prep schoolers - Kent senior Andrew lane and Brooks junior mitch nenninger - will have key roles defensively as well. Junior Alex Robert (40 pts) was a huge cog in the lineup at Maine Class A state champion Lewiston. Sam Frechette, repeating his sophomore year at prep, was a big part of that team as well, so was senior Joseph Bisson, who takes his talents to Hebron Academy. Post-grad Kyle Wiswell finished a solid career at Noble HS in Maine. Chelmsford, MA native Robert Currie is a key member of the Boch Militia U18 club. Senior Jacob Dubay (54 pts) led his Orono/Old Town HS team to a huge season this past winter. Sophomore Owen Stadheim, Seth’s brother, is an up-and-
coming offensive talent. Keep an eye on junior R.C. Angelil, all the way from the Jr. Golden Knights in Nevada. Austin Roy will play with the new TA Seahawks of the EHL. On the blue line, post-grad Evan St. Pierre will continue his career with the Seacoast College Prep squad. Fellow post-grad Walsh Troiani-Gagner is readying for another year in the junior ranks. Senior Ismail Prudent is a gifted two-way blueliner who hails from Hawkesbury, ONT. Junior Nick Bisson was a key blueliner for the Lewiston state title club and follows his brother to Hebron this winter.
Junior Leonard Brochu is a key rearguard at Brewster Academy. Goaltending will be solid with post-grad Paddy Capsalis, who backboned a nice season this past winter for Salem (NH) HS.

Campbell is ready for a huge senior year at Masconomet. Junior Damon Maribito, brother of Dante, moves up from HNIB’s Sophomore All Stars. Senior Steve Johnson blossomed into a top scorer for his Tewksbury HS club. Newton South ace Andrew Pratt (43 pts) and North Reading senior Owen Maxwell round out the forward ranks. Hentosh’s teammate at St. John’s, rugged blueliner Chrstian Kukas, will join his temmate at Phillips Andover in the winter. Senior Brian Nadeau returns to the club and is back at St. John’s Prep.
A stellar season at Andover HS saw great play on blue line from senior Jake Lachance. Senior Matt Taylor of Danvers has made himself one of the top blue liners in the Northeast Conference. The lone junior in the group is Kyle Ouellette, hoping to keep the strong winning tradition at St. Mary’s alive. Senior Joe Conte is the backbone of the blueline at Triton. his year’s edition of the Sophomore All Star team has a lot to live up to, after last year’s group qualified for the Showcase playoffs. The team will be looking to achieve that goal once again. Two veteran head coaches - Arlington Catholic’s Dan Shine and Reading’s Mark

away. Look for big things from William Flynn at Danvers HS this year. Pennsylvania’s Khaleil Laracuente is a key scorer for the Esmark Stars.
