H
ockey Night In Boston welcomes you to our 39th annual Summer Tournament being held again this year at the Valley Forum, a beautiful two-rink facility in Haverhill, MA (25 miles north of Boston). Action in the 20-team Summer Showcase begins on Friday, July 26th with a unique jamboree-style format sure to please the scouts in attendance. Twenty teams will each play six games against six different opponents over a four-day period. College and NHL Scouts will be able to see prospects play two times each day on Saturday and Sunday against different opponents. Four select teams of Massachusetts /RI top players – Greater Boston, South Shore/RI, North Shore, Middlesex/Merrimack _ were chosen in April/May. Players were invited by the HNIB staff based upon their previous winter’s scholastic hockey season. The 30th annual New YorkConnecticut-Mid-Atlantic camp featuring close to 90 players took place from June 14-16. The players competed for spots on two teams in the South Division: Mid Atlantic and Connecticut/NY. HNIB Mid-West Director John Malloy conducted the 24th annual camp in Ann Arbor, MI (June 21-23) to select a major for this showcase. The Midwest teams will feature players from many Midwestern states. Over 85 skaters signed up for the 29th annual Northern New England camp in Haverhill, MA from June 7th -9th. The result was two select teams, Northern New England and Northeast, that represent players from Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Early in July, 50 players were drafted from the HNIB High School Division tryouts for participation in the major showcase (from a turnout of 125 partcipants), including a Suburban entry. Sixteen teams of sophomores (over 300 players) competed in the gigantic and unique HNIB Sophomore All-Star Tournament from July 14-20. Also, 240 junior high players participated in their own festival as a stepping

Returning at HNIB this summer are two major teams representing South Florida (Tim Kyrkostas), and the Philadelphia area (Charlie Pens). Defending champion Central/West returns looking for another title newly named as Mass West. Metro performed quite well in its baptism
last summer. East Coast is hoping to challenge in the West Division. This summer HNIB welcomes three new clubs including a team with a majority of players from the state of Minnesota that should compete right away. A team from Long Island, put together by George Hansen, and a team from Western NY, compiled by Nick Nucci, look to challenge in South and East divisions respectively.

Conn/NY’s Fallon A Going Concern
S
By Kevin Doyle • HNIB
enior Joey Fallon has been thinking about and working toward the coming season at Gunnery since last season ended at the hands of Kent in the semifinal round of the Stuart/Corkery Elite Tournament. Expectations are high for a Highlanders' squad that returns a large contingent from the 216-4 club that finished third in HNIB's final 2013 poll. "The loss left me as well as all the other returners hungry for redemption. We are returning a bunch of great guys who are not only good players but all are awesome human beings. We have one of the closest of bonds I have ever seen before as a team and with coach (Chris) Baudo's ability to recruit great hockey players and even better kids the bond as a team will get even stronger come next year. We have all the elements of a great team and in my honest opinion New England's is ours to lose," said Fallon. Compact and durable, Fallon hails from West Islip, NY. He is a product of the Long Island Royals' program and is a big fan of the Rangers' Ryan Callahan. "I have loved Callahan from Day One. I model my playing style directly after his. He is an 'X Factor' type of player, who will do anything and everything for the betterment of the team," said Fallon, who tallied 27 pts in his first season at Gunnery. He credited the Gunnery coaching staff for noticeable improvements in his penalty killing and keeping mind of his defensive responsibilities as a center. He uses his speed and strength to his advantage but says he needs to work on maintaining poise with the puck and his shot release. At the conclusion of this past school year, Fallon was back on the ice as his former coaches Steve Webb and Pat Lafontaine secured ice for members of his old U16 Royals team to get their legs back. Fallon is also working directly with New York Islanders' Strength and Conditioning Coach Derek Douglas. A returnee to the Connecticut/New York squad coached by Jim Salfi in this week's 39th annual HNIB Summer Showcase, Fallon likes the roster's makeup and its chances to improve last year's 3-4-0 slate. This tournament, coupled with his ongoing training regimen, should serve as a springboard into Fallon's senior season
Joey Fallon • Gunnery Leads Conn.N Y Charge
"It looks like we have some good talent and, with coach Salfi on the bench, we should be a good contender," he said. "I hope to help Connecticut/New York win some games as well as better myself as a player." (Continued On Page 29)

McDonough Will Test Jr. Hockey Waters Metro Star Heads to Jr. Monarchs He will carry the memories of consecutive State championships with him and said scoring a goal at TD Garden is something he will never forget. "Winning back-to-back state titles was awesome, and doing it with your best friends makes it even better. I will some day be able to tell my own kids about getting to play in the Boston Garden and winning back-to-back state titles. As a team, we worked really hard to achieve this goal, and having it happen two years in a row is the best feeling in the world," he said. (Continued On Page 28)
"It was not an easy decision for me. I feel that working with the coaches and Monarchs' organization will help me develop to the level I need to be at to play college hockey. It is a big commitment but I am very excited about this opportunity and look forward to the upcoming season." Wilmington’s Brendan McDonough Offensive Catalyst For Metro

By Kevin Doyle • HNIB
stalwart member of Wilmington High School's Massachusetts Division Two State Champion teams each of the past two seasons, Brendan McDonough will forgo his senior season as the Wildcats transition to Division One in favor of playing with the Junior Monarchs of the Eastern Hockey League. "It was not an easy decision for me. I feel that working with the coaches and Monarchs' organization will help me develop to the level I need to be at to play college hockey. It is a big commitment but I am very excited about this opportunity and look forward to the upcoming season," said McDonough.

Liquori Last Line Of Defense Mass West Goalie Ready For Big Showcase
John Liquori • Springfield Cathedral Mass West Backstopper
A
By Kevin Doyle • HNIB
s the last line of defense for Springfield Cathedral, John Liquori enters his senior season motivated by a bit of unfinished business -- success in the elite Massachusetts Division 1A Tournament, a.k.a. The Super Eight. "My expectations for this year are to take my team to the Super Eight for the third year in a row and win the Super Eight Championship," said Liquori, who had a 2.03 GAA and .908 save percentage last year. Cathedral seemed poised to mount a challenge last winter -- until it ran into
eventual 1A champion Malden Catholic, which dealt Cathedral its only three losses of the season in succession -- first in the championship game of Cathedral's tournament, then in the Super Eight quarterfinals. Liquori played for defending Summer Showcase champion Central/West last year, an experience he said gave him confidence for the high school campaign. His performance drew him one of the Showcase’s Top Goaltender awards last summer. (Continued On Page 29)
Playmaking McDonough Key For Metro (Continued From Page 26)
And, he expects Wilmington will be just fine despite the jump to Division One. "They have Drew Foley in net, who I think is the best goalie in the Middlesex League. They also have a great group of returning players. I am very glad I had the chance to play with some great teammates in front of our classmates and our awesome fans," said McDonough, who led Wilmington with 31 points last season skating on the top line with Cam Owens and Jake Rogers.
McDonough tries to emulate Thomas Vanek of the Buffalo Sabres, combining skill with physicality. An adept set-up man, McDonough considers his hockey sense and on-ice vision his biggest assets. "I like to move the puck and set up plays with my teammates. I work very hard in the corners and try to play a two-way hockey game. I have a strong shot and spend a lot of time practicing shooting," said McDonough, adding his skating and acceleration need improvement.

You can always use more speed in hockey as at each level things happen faster on the ice. You can always improve your skills in every part of the game so the work never really stops ," he said. McDonough has been engaged in off-ice training and strength training since the end of the high school baseball season. In addition the HNIB Summer Showcase, he will skate in several tournaments this summer as well as participating in skills camps. McDonough says he looks forward to playing at HNIB each summer. This is his second HNIB appearance with Frank Golden's Metro squad, which includes Wilmington High teammates Luke Foley and Cody McGowan. "I know we will have a lot of fun playing in this tournament. I think we should do just fine. Coach Golden has put together a strong team and always gets the most out of his players. I have learned a lot from him these past few years in these tournaments," McDonough said. He has not made a college commitment but understands the recruiting process is now under way in earnest. He hopes to stay in the New England region. "I plan on working really hard this year in all aspects of my game. If I do my best and push myself hopefully things will eventually fall into place. I know my coaches will be a big plus in teaching me how to become a better player and help me get some exposure from college coaches. My goal is to play college hockey at the highest level possible but more importantly get a good education at a college that fits me," he concluded.

"I was playing very well and I was pleased with the way I was playing," he said, adding that he continued to improve throughout the season. "My overall game improved a lot in my opinion. My angles were one thing I had to improve, which I believe I accomplished. My patience in net grew a lot from past seasons and my ability to read and react to plays has improved greatly." Liquori's favorite NHL player is Penguins' goalie Marc Andre Fleury, his post-season struggles notwithstanding. "I admire the way he plays and presents himself as a goalie. I've always tried to mirror my style and performance after him," said Liquori, who cites his speed in net and quick reaction time as primary assets. "I think that my glove side is my strongest area in net along with my pads. Areas I believe still need work are my blocker side and the confidence to make a strong play behind the net with my stick," he assessed. His preparation for the coming season has included appearances in two earlier showcases and attendance at a prospects camp in Marlborough. Off-ice training takes place even day and Liquori is also doing position-specific weight training with a former Cathedral goaltender "I don’t know much about the roster for the Central/West team this year, but if we're anything like last year we pose a big threat to take the Showcase again," he said. "What I hope to gain from this year’s Showcase is to play with even more confidence and not to over think. Liquori will play Junior hockey upon graduation from Cathedral and will pursue a Criminal Justice degree. "I would love the opportunity to play college hockey, I hope my performance this year draws some attentions and helps prove to myself and others I'm ready to play at the next level," he said.
Fallon Leads Conn/NY (Continued From Page 25)
Fallon will likely seek a business degree in college and anticipates at least an additional year of Junior hockey upon graduating from Gunnery. "I am hoping to commit (to college) this coming year. I have a very open mind as for where I want to go and I still have a very wide field of schools that I'm interested in," he said. Step One in that process takes place this week.

North Shore’s Bailey MacBurnie A Cool Customer In The Crease
Bailey MacBurnie Will Guard North Shore Cage
F
By Kevin Doyle • HNIB
ans of goaltending should pay attention to North Shore keeper Bailey MacBurnie during this week's 39th annual Hockey Night In Boston Summer Showcase. The Beverly, MA product burst onto the scene two seasons ago as a sophomore, leading St. Mary's of Lynn to 22-2-3 record, a Catholic Central League championship and the No. 2 seed in the elite Massachusetts Division 1A Tournament. He posted a 1.38 GAA in 27 starts, earning league honors while facing close to 600 shots. He received a merit scholarship to attend Brewster Academy, where last season he recorded shutouts of Holderness, Pingree and Winchendon (52 saves) and, in perhaps his most impressive performance of the year, turned back 62 shots in a 4-2 loss to a powerhouse Kimball Union club. "That was truly a memorable and exhausting game against a team that has
numerous Division One commits," recalled MacBurnie, who has been "playing up" in age and ability in USHL U20 tournaments. "During the most recent junior and college tournaments I realized that the strength and pace doesn’t bother me. Seeing quick powerful shots from all angles on a regular basis has forced me to improve on crease quickness and awareness. The USHL and college level players force me to lock down posts and seal the lower part of the the net during inclose scrums. I see the NHL goalies have mastered this knowing at any time these players can sneak one in from anywhere," said MacBurnie, a student of goalie guru Brian Daccord. A rangy 6-2, MacBurnie is a classic butterfly goalie who maintains balanced crease coverage augmented by a quick glove and blocker. He admires NHL goalies Mike Smith and Pekka Rinne. "I believe my tenacity and focus on the ice makes me successful. Mike Smith
reminds me of myself the way he competes. You can tell that he really loves to compete. Pekka Rinne is special because of his size -- I would love to be close to his size on the ice," MacBurnie said. He possesses the mental toughness and short-term memory, coupled with the ability to anticipate the unexpected and to manage the flow of the game, necessary to succeed in the cage. "My own personal goaltending philosophy is playing strong and smart during rough patches in a game, (and) separating yourself from distractions that can affect your performance while communicating with my teammates. I am always motivated and prepared to do the very best in net to give my team the best chance of success," he said. Part of that preparation includes an off-ice regimen of cardio work, cross training, stretching, yoga, weight lifting, core strengthening, and playing sports such as tennis to develop hand-eye coordination. Skating, Play-Making Keys To Success For South/RI’s Borges
Brandon Borges • Williston Key Cog In South/RI Lineup
T
By Kevin Doyle • HNIB
hough small in stature, junior forward Brandon Borges hopes to have a large impact this season as WillistonNorthampton seeks to bounce back from a rugged 2012-13 campaign. "My expectations for Williston this year are to make the playoffs and to be an impact player my teammates can count on. This past season going into Prep hockey, which is a fast and physical game, made me ready for the next level and allaround made me a better player," said Borges, of Providence, RI. He finished his debut campaign for the Wildcats with nine goals and 20 points, after starring for two seasons at Mt. St. Charles. Borges is skating for South Shore/Rhode Island in this week's 39th annual Summer Showcase. After years of fielding separate squads, the combined South/RI entry won its first title in 2009. South Shore, in fact, is far and away the most successful region in the tournament's history with eight championships. "I feel that this is a talented team and I think the team will do well in the Showcase," said Borges of the South/Ri unit. "I hope to get some exposure and face good competition." Borges, a recent 14th-round draft pick of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Moncton Wildcats, admires the Penguins' Sidney Crosby. "He makes something happen every time the puck is on his stick and he is a leader. I like to model my game around his playing style and compete level," he said. As a smaller player, Borges understands the need for enhanced skills to offset a lack of size. He cites his skating and puck-handling ability as his primary strengths and is working to improve all aspects of his game. "Right now I am trying to focus on improving my strength. This summer I have been working with Anthony Morando at Mike Boyle's Strength and Conditioning. I also have been shooting every day and skating twice a week," Borges said. Borges said he has drawn interest from ECAC, Atlantic and Hockey East Schools and hopes to make a commitment during the upcoming school year, adding "there is no rush." He also understands an additional year of seasoning may be necessary to prepare him fully for the rigors of the college game. "If Juniors is going to prepare me for college, then I will most likely play Juniors," said Borges, who will study Business in college.
North’s MacBurnie Looks Forward To Upcoming Year (Continued From Page 33)
He enjoys both saltwater and freshwater fishing and playing NHL on Xbox. At Brewster this past year he achieved the highest grade in the junior class reporting on fundraisers and the importance of credible foundations. " I can see myself involved in raising money for non-profit or profit marketing. I enjoy setting goals and attaining them," he said. This week's goal? To help North Shore add a second tournament title to the one it claimed back in 1989. "I'm looking for-
ward to playing for coach (Andy) Heinze. I'm hopeful to do what I can to contribute to the team's success," he said. Beyond that, MacBurnie said "I’m really looking forward to my upcoming senior year, both academically and playing hockey. I’ve been contacted by several colleges over the past year or so and I’m looking forward to the college process and being successful at the next level. Interests that I’d be pursuing in college include business marketing and personal relations possibly within professional sports."

South’s Tim Doherty Won’t Be Denied St. George’s Star Deals With Diabetes
T
By Kevin Doyle • HNIB News
he picture of Philadelphia Flyers' Hall of Famer Bobby Clarke in the family living room serves as both inspiration and constant reminder for Tim Doherty that Type 1 diabetes is not a stop sign but merely a speed bump to be negotiated along life's path. "It (diabetes) can't stop you from doing anything in this world and that is my motto -- it just can't stop you. When I was younger I had the opportunity to go to a Bruins' game and go down to the locker room after and meet Nick Boynton, who at the time played for the Bruins and also has Type 1 diabetes," said Doherty, who had a stellar campaign as a junior captain at St. George's School last winter. Doherty was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age five but has never considered himself a disabled athlete. "Diabetes is something that I carry with me everywhere I go. It certainly brings some challenges regarding sports but it is motivation to me to overcome adversity. I like having it as a challenge and it makes me a better player, I think, because of the inspiration it gives me," Doherty said. He grew up playing with a diabetic line mate, which made dealing with the disease easier. Occasionally he meets diabetic players at various tournaments or showcases. "We always talk about the basics, like if he wears a pump or what kind of bolus he gives before a skate. Anyone without diabetes would look at us like we were speaking a different language but it's always nice to know you're not the only one with it," Doherty noted. In addition to the mental preparation prior to every practice or game, Doherty must remain hyper-vigilant monitoring his insulin intake. "Before each skate I have to determine on the spot the amount of insulin I have to give myself before I take my pump off. Then in between periods I test and see where I'm at. Every day is a new day meaning it is never the same so each time I skate it's like a game with diabetes, judging how much I need or don't need," he explained. Doherty is another well-rounded forward on the South Shore/Rhode Island squad in this week's Summer Showcase. "I think our team will fare just fine in the showcase. Hopefully we can form a bond early and do well. Hopefully we make a good run," he said. "I hope to have a good tournament and hope that my team makes a really good run. I hope that my play is noticeable to some college coaches."
Tim Doherty • St. George’s South Shore/RI Sniper
Doherty's ice vision, coupled with a high hockey IQ, make him dangerous every time he touches the puck. He feels his overall game improved noticeably last season and he is working this summer to improve his explosion and speed. "Patrice Bergeron has always been my favorite player. He's the best two-way player in hockey and is more of a playmaker rather than a goal-scorer, which I see myself as. He is also just a warrior which I admire because I deal with something extra while playing and he proved anything is possible in Game 6 (of the Stanley Cup Finals)," Doherty said. Doherty has high hopes for this year's St. George's squad following a 9-12-1 campaign a year ago. "We were a really young team last year and we had our ups and downs so I think this year we should be an all around solid team. We have some guys coming in who are gonna' help us out and a really good core group of guys. I definitely see us making a name for ourselves this year," he said.

he regimen includes shooting a minimum of 200 pucks a day, five days a week, as well as on-ice and off-ice conditioning programs and power skating. It's all geared toward preparing former Chelmsford High stalwart Tommy Bishop for his upcoming PG year at Phillips Andover. The decision to attend nearby Phillips came easily. "I wanted an extra year to develop both academically and athletically and Phillips Andover was my number one choice to accomplish both goals. I look at it as a great gateway to college," said Bishop, who skates with North Shore in this week's Summer Showcase for the second straight year. Bishop drove Chelmsford's high-powered attack the past two seasons, piling up 39 goals and 99 points, including 22-22-44 totals as a senior. He is hopeful of a smooth transition from Massachusetts Division One public school hockey to the faster pace of the prep school game. "I was fortunate enough to play on a great team in the MVC/DCL where we played a lot of tough teams. The difference is that in the Prep League, every team is a tough team, so we have to just be more consistent. We've got a great roster at Phillips Andover and I'm really looking forward to playing with so many high quality players. We're all going to be able to push each other to play to be the best, and I believe the coaching staff and other players will make this a smooth switch," he said. Bishop felt he improved in all aspects of his game as a senior, especially when it came to taking the puck to the net and creating opportunities. He complements his hockey sense and skating with the ability to set up scoring chances for himself and, as 60 helpers the past two seasons indicate, his line mates. So it is no surprise he's a big fan of the Bruins' premier playmaker David Krejci and his knack for making things happen. While he possesses an accurate shot, Bishop said he is working on his strength and speed which, in turn, will add power to his shot. He's looking for North Shore to make an impact this week. Hard-Working Stephan Seeger Will Impress From a personal standpoint, HNIB provides Seeger -who, at 17, has not repeated a year -- a measuring stick of where he stands in comparison to older, more seasoned players. "HNIB is a place to be challenged and forced to show your skills and compete level, playing against the best kids around. I always want a measurement of how I’m performing among skilled players because it helps me set goals for myself," he said. "I also welcome the chance to show what I have learned, and prove myself to be a player worthy of consideration for higher level opportunities. To be recognized for hard work is very satisfying on a personal level, and I am coming ready to play for that reason.

runswick School senior forward and captain Stephan Seeger has spent this summer diligently working on his allaround game in preparation for his upcoming season. That preparation has included working with current and former NHL stars like Max Pacioretty, Mat Moulson, Jonathan Quick, Mark Messier and Glen Anderson on occasion. Seeger explains: "I am working out at Bluestreak in Stamford (CT), doing both off-ice and on-ice stuff. We have a few weekly skates with some Brunswick guys, and I get a chance to jump on with the pros around our area from time to time--it happens more than you think. It's a lot of fun to be on the ice with these guys; they’re all players I look up to and have learned things from even over the last few years especially. Some of them do camps that I work at, so I guess it's a job benefit." Seeger skates for veteran coach Jim Salfi's Connecticut/New York entry in this week's 39th Summer Showcase and anticipates a highly-competitive tournament. "We're going to have to work no doubt, given the caliber of some of the teams with experienced junior and prep players on their rosters," Seeger said. "But I think that in these types of tournaments it's not always the teams with a ton of individual talent that win. As long as we can play together up and down the ice, we’re going to do well."
Seeger characterizes himself as "a physical two-way player with a nose for the net." He is a superb passer, ferocious forechecker and tenacious in the defensive zone. A big fan of Bruins' banger Milan Lucic, Seeger proudly pointed out he required a total of 28 stitches last season from four separate instances, a result of his physical play and propensity to block shots. "He’s a big power forward with a lot of skill, and scores big goals. I like that he is physical and no nonsense. You don’t have to be dirty to be physical, and I think he’s somebody who is a good example of that," Seeger said. Improved conditioning allowed Seeger to play an estimated 70 games between Prep and Juniors with the Connecticut Oilers organization last season. His confidence grew, a result of being cast in a leadership role on both teams. He excelled in the dirty areas and made sure to play hard and play through every shift as a means of leading by doing. Seeger characterizes himself as "a physical two-way player with a nose for the net." He is a superb passer, ferocious forechecker and tenacious in the defensive zone. He is working on developing his speed and improving his edges, working closely with CT Oilers coach Eric Lind. (Continued On Page 38)

"We made a strong run last year and with our experience and talent on this year's team, I think we have a good shot to win the 2013 HNIB Showcase," he said. "I'm hoping to draw some interest from scouts and coaches associated with college hockey." Where and when that will be remains open at this point, though Bishop is hopeful of catching on with a Division One program. "Depending on how recruiting goes for me during my PG year at Phillips Andover, I will be willing to play a year of Juniors if the college feels it is in my and their best interest," Bishop said. "I have no commitments to date, and I am making a strong push at the D1 level and know there are some good schools that I would be a great fit for."

Seeger has a trainer helping with nutrition and also scours game tapes from the past season, matching advice received to game situations. Expectations for Brunswick this coming season depend in large part on replacing graduated goaltender Griff Richardson. "We’re going to have to dig deep and get a lot from our younger guys. As captain, I want to make sure they know we can’t win this year because of individual talent, and that’s not a bad situation at all. It will have to be a group effort or it will become a long season," he said."I have high expectations, and we’ll find a way to win, we always cause a few upsets and create a few surprises, and I know all of our guys are training over the summer. We’ll be ready to compete in every game." Beyond Brunswick, Seeger plans to play Junior hockey in advance of college. He hopes to make his commitment early this academic year. "I am seventeen now, so when I graduate next spring, I’ll have a few years to develop at a much higher level. I am interested in a Hockey East or an Ivy opportunity. So schools like University of Vermont, UNH, and UMass are of interest, and Yale, Dartmouth and Brown are places that are really attractive to me as well. Michigan and Quinnipiac are also up there," he said.

everly High senior captain Connor Irving has targeted a very specific goal this coming season -- the Massachusetts Division 2 State title. The Panthers return 10 seniors and a nearly intact squad that should be highly-motivated after suffering a premature post-season exit this March. " I have had a good career at BHS but there is still something missing that I really want and that is a State championship. My expectations for the season are to not look ahead of any games and take it game by game," said Irving. "We have a great senior class this year and we've learned a lot from our seasons at BHS. I'm hopeful to make a run this year in the playoffs." Small in stature, Irving cuts a commanding figure on the ice with his out-sized skills. He eclipsed 100 career points last season when he led the Panthers in scoring with 13 goals and 43 points and could threaten the program's all-time record (172 points) by the end of this season. Irving returns to HNIB this summer as a member of the North Shore squad and pointed to his all-star performance of a year ago as a catalyst for successful high school season. "HNIB gave me a lot of confidence going into last season because of the great competition. Making the all-star game and playing with that caliber of talent gave me a lot of confidence going into the season at BHS," he said. Irving is a fan of Sidney Crosby's game because "he sees the ice and is always making plays and he also can shoot the puck with the best of them too. He's a really fun player to watch." Speed and passing are Irving's strong suits. He works on his game relentlessly and feels his shot has improved and said "being a junior captain was a big task and I feel like I've learned how to become a good leader from experience and not just being a leader on the ice but off as well." He is focused on improving his strength during the off-season. "I would like to throw my weight around next season rather than taking all the hits!" he said. He anticipates North Shore will turn in its usual strong showing this week and is hopeful of putting together a strong week to generate increased interest among college coaches in attendance. While he hopes to attend college directly out of high school, he will take a PG year at a prep school if so advised. "I am looking to attend college (right away) but if coaches don't think I'm ready then I'll do a post grad year at a prep school. I'll know more when the high school season starts," said Irving, who expressed interest in some ECAC Division Three schools as well as prep schools such as Kent's Hill and Berkshire.

uckingham, Browne & Nichols senior Connor Hegarty emerged as one of the Independent School League's premier defensemen last season, earning All-ISL honors while winning the league's prestigious Flood Shield. Additionally, he was selected as BB&N's John Powers Leadership winner and Coaches Cup winner. Hegarty's accomplishments mirrored those of the team as BB&N finished 10-3-1 in the ISL (16-8-1 overall) under the guidance of veteran coach Terrence Butt. "(I'm) hoping to build on the successes of (last) season both as a team and as an individual, due to the tremendous coaching of Coach Butt. He puts everything he has into the players and the team and that has proven to be invaluable to my personal development especially," said Hegarty, who felt his increased time on the power play aided his overall understanding of time and space, and in making smart offensive decisions. Hegarty is skating this week for Greater Boston, which last won the Summer Showcase championship two years ago and is seeking its seventh overall title. "I hope to gain exposure and catch the eye of some college coaches to expand my opportunities, as well as working hard with the tournament team to achieve the best possible outcome," he said. "I'm sure we will be a great team. Historically, there have been many great players on this team and in this tournament. I'm sure they will all be skilled players from Boston's surrounding schools that will gel to make a competitive team."

at Wrenn and his returning senior teammates at Malden Catholic will have a rare opportunity this coming season. The three-time defending champion Lancers could become just the second program in Division 1A Tournament history to win four consecutive championships. Catholic Memorial has done so twice. Wrenn believes the Lancers have the potential to return the title game at TD Garden next March. "We have a large majority of the team coming back. We always set the bar high and try to complete our goals by the end of every season. The past year's goal was to win the Super 8 for the third time. We want to be back playing in the championship game at the Garden," said Wrenn, a gritty two-way forward who had six goals and 14 points in the regular season as a junior. The likelihood of MC reaching the title game this past March seemed remote at mid-season when they had a 5-6-3 record. However, the Lancers ran the table with 11 consecutive wins, including a 5-0 Super 8 record during which they outscored opponents, 24-8. "We had a rough spot during the middle of the season. We knew that we were much better than the way we were playing and we were struggling. We came together as a team and we never stopped. We started winning games and it gave us the momentum that carried us to the Super 8," Wrenn said. Wrenn laces them up for traditional Summer Showcase contender Greater Boston this week, familiar with a fair number of players on the

Hegarty cites speed, vision and puck skills as his greatest assets and says size and strength are areas he is constantly working to improve. To that end, he is spending four days a week in the weight room and two days on the ice with ProForm Development based at The Icenter in Salem, NH. "I feel these areas can always use improvement and development. They are especially critical for me this year and I believe the ProForm program will provide me with the appropriate training to meet my goals," said Hegarty, who has also attended the Harvard Hockey Camp and participated in some other area tournaments. He is another of Patrice Bergeron's growing legion of fans because "no one player in the entire NHL plays all zones of the ice better than him." Though hopeful of moving to the college level upon graduation from BB&N, Hegarty understands that additional seasoning may be necessary. "If the right situation presented itself I would be open to anything, but I feel that my time at BB&N has and will prepare me to play at the next level wherever that may be," said Hegarty, who is leaning toward majoring in business or economics and will seek the right academic and athletic fit. "I know how difficult it can be to find that. There are a ton of great schools and programs out there and I am excited to find the best one for me at the college level, much like I did in high school when I chose to attend BB&N and play for coach Butt," he concluded.
squad. "I think our team will be very good and we have a shot at winning. I think we will compete with the best of them," said Wrenn, who's looking forward to gaining "experience from good competition" as part of the preparation for his final campaign at MC. Wrenn admires the Bruins' multi-talented Patrice Bergeron. "He is one of the best two-way forwards that plays today. He is a force in the offensive zone and he is very good in the defensive zone. He is a power play and penalty kill player and he is one of the best in the game," Wrenn assessed. As for his own game, Wrenn cites speed, size, strength and determination as his primary assets and, as last season went on, felt he gained confidence and patience in the offensive zone and played a more disciplined game. He said he needs to improve his face-off efficiency and his defensive zone play. In addition to the Summer Showcase, Wrenn is working out at Mike Boyle's Strength and Conditioning and skating at Dynamic Skating. Wrenn is undecided as to taking a PG year or playing Juniors upon graduation from MC but understands that at least one, or perhaps two, more seasons of seasoning are likely necessary. "I want to explore all my options and would like to play at the highest level with the best competition possible," he said.

he decision to transfer from Archbishop Williams to Nobles prior to last season did not come easily for Billy Sweezey. He ventured into the unknown, leaving behind teammates and coaches he loved. "I loved everything about the (Williams) team. Coach (Derackk) Curtis and the other members of the coaching staff were all extremely supportive of my choice to transfer, which I really appreciated," said Sweezey, a defenseman. "Nobles was a big change for me, both academically and athletically. I found that the academics and athletics were a step up but I feel that I adjusted to
the speed (of the hockey) and the rigor of the school quickly." He is optimistic about Nobles' upcoming season. "We lost important players from last year but I know that different guys will step up and contribute to the team. It was disappointing we didn't make the playoffs last season and I am hoping this year that we will make the playoffs and make a run for the title," he said. Sweezey skated for the Suburban squad last summer but shifts to the South Shore/Rhode Island club for this week's Summer Showcase. (Continued On Page 44)

t. Paul's School junior forward Connor Sodergren of Tewksbury, MA is eagerly anticipating his Summer Showcase debut this week as a member of Bill Flanagan's Middlesex/Merrimack squad. "I’m excited to be playing against all these talented players from across the state and country. This being my first year, I’m anxious and excited to be a part of this tournament and compete at this high level," said Sodergren. "I’m not familiar with the Middlesex/Merrimack roster but I know they did very well last year and I am sure coach Flanagan will have another strong competitive team this year." Sodergren is hopeful his experience gained during this tournament carries over to the coming season at St. Paul's.

A fan of the Bruins' Brad Marchand, Sodergren possesses terrific speed, protects the puck well and relies on his vision and hockey sense. "Our expectations this year are to continue to improve as a team so that we are in a better position to qualify for the playoffs. We are one of the younger teams in the ISL, but have the work ethic and drive to compete with any of the other predicted top teams in the Prep School League.," he said. A fan of the Bruins' Brad Marchand, Sodergren possesses terrific speed, protects the puck well and relies on his vision and hockey sense. His knack for finishing has improved and he has become more of a grinder. Meanwhile, he continues to work on his shot. His summer preparation has included skating twice a week and working out four days a week. He has participated in a number of showcases and tournaments to maintain and improve his skills and to remain competitive at a high level. (Continued On Page 44)

Just a junior, Sodergren has yet to experience the high pressure of recruiting although he is hopeful of making a commitment some time within the next year. That process could include an extra year of seasoning, something Sodergren is happy to do. "I would certainly play (Junior hockey) if asked to do so by a college coach. I would help me learn as a player and prepare me for the college level," he said. While he is keeping his options open, Sodergren is certain of one thing -though undecided as to a course of study, choosing a top-flight education will
be every bit as important as the hockey program when it comes time to making that decision. "I would love to go to an Ivy League School, not only for hockey but to get an awesome education as well. A Hockey East school would also be very exciting to me for both athletic and academic reasons," he said. "I have always enjoyed watching BC and BU especially at the Beanpot Tournament.Hockey there is very competitive and exciting."
Sweezey Opening Eyes At Nobles (Continued From Page 42)
"I am looking forward to playing on the team and hope that we can have a good tournament and win some games," he said. "I can only hope that the team is successful and that I could get my name out there to some of the scouts and hope there is some interest." The Pittsburgh Penguins' Brooks Orpik stands as Sweezey's favorite NHL defenseman. "I enjoy watching him play every chance I get and I try to model the way I play after him. I love how physical he plays and that he is a solid defenseman who can also contribute offensively for his team; and I try my hardest to play like him," Sweezey said. Sweezey plays a heavy game and cites his vision and ability to keep the puck out of dangerous areas in the defensive zone as strengths. He is focused on improving his foot speed and said the biggest improvement in his overall game this past season came in the offensive zone. It's been a busy summer full of hockey for Sweezey, who is training at Edge Performance System at the Foxboro Sportscenter. He has already played in several tournaments, and will play in a showcase at Cornell at the end of August. While the future is hard to predict, Sweezey said he'd like to make a college commitment some time within the next year. With an interest in science, he said he may major in Biology or Biomedical Engineering. "I think it would be a fun experience to be able to play a year of juniors before I go to college. I am very excited for the next few years to see how everything unfolds for me," he said. "I am very interested in playing in Hockey East and I am interested in Providence, UNH, and some Ivy League schools like Brown and Harvard."

s he prepares for his upcoming junior season for powerhouse Springfield (MA) Cathedral, Peter Crinella finds himself in an enviable position, having already committed to playing hockey at Holy Cross. "I initially visited Holy Cross to watch some games and I fell in love with the school. The program is well-run and the level of education is exceptional. I consider myself very fortunate to have the opportunity to attend such a highly-regarded school. My parents always said 'Education first, sports second'. Holy Cross is the best of both worlds," said Crinella, selected recently in the 13th round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League by Baie-Comeau Drakkar.
With the rigors of the recruiting process no longer in play, Crinella hopes to finish his high school career at Cathedral with a focus on securing the program's first-ever Division 1A championship to go along with a pair of Division 1 State crowns and a single Division 2 championship. Cathedral roared out to a 16-0-4 record last winter only to catch eventual 1A champion Malden Catholic at precisely the wrong time. First MC ended Cathedral's unbeaten streak, 1-0, in the championship game of Cathedral's own tournament. Then, as fate would have it, the two squared off in a 1A quarterfinal series, which MC swept, 4-0 and 3-2. (Continued on Page 48)

f form holds true, you can expect Northern New England defenseman Nick Gorski of Sandown, NH to provide coach Mike Addesa's squad with a long-range offensive presence this week, particularly on the power play. Gorski was a key offensive component throughout this past season for Mass. D-I power Central Catholic. While responsible in his own end, Gorski's sense of when to creep up to the weakside dot for a one-timer proved a going concern throughout the Raiders' Division 1A Tournament quarterfinal series against St. John's Prep. He had one goal and a number of good looks in that three-game set. "I see the ice really well. I'm able to shift from a defensive Page 46

"I'm looking to get more college exposure and play against good competition." He will attend Philips Andover Academy this year for his PG season. He's looking to build on what was something of a breakout senior year during which Gorski said "I was quicker and stronger (and) I played more offensively." "It (Phillips) is a good fit for me, academically and athletically. I love the campus. They have a great hockey program. Connor Jewett Has The Scoring Touch Forward Coming Off Torrid 61-Goal Season

he number jumps off the page, causing an inevitable head-snapping double-take. Your rational mind tells you it doesn't compute. Yet there it is -- 61 goals in 21 games, for all intents and purposes a hat trick per contest. Which is precisely what New Hampshire Division Three Player of the Year Connor Jewett accomplished this past season, leading Berlin to a perfect regular season and to the Division Three state title game, where the Mountaineers fell in OT to John Stark/Hopkinton. "Coming within one game of getting a title was very frustrating. We couldn’t stress enough that we had to stay out of the box but yet we found ourselves killing penalties at key times in the game which made the loss much more frustrating. We beat ourselves," Jewett lamented. "The expectation for this year is to be right back at the Verizon playing for a state title. We will have a strong team that will score plenty of goals. Our defense will do fine and we have two outstanding goalies," he added. Jewett said the maturation process every player goes through has brought with it improved ice awareness and a sense of calm with the puck. "I don’t panic with the puck as much as I used to. Playing at Hockey Night for
coach (Mike) Addesa and other tournaments at a high level of competition is a major factor in the improvement of my game. My high school coaches have helped me mature as a player. I’m always willing to take criticism to make myself the best hockey player I can be," said Jewett, who admires Pavel Datsyuk.
"I want to do whatever is going to make me the best player I can be and get me into a good college. Every player wants to play D1 college hockey and that is what I want to do." - NNE’s Connor Jewett "He is very good in his defensive zone and he always seems to know where the puck is going to be and that is why you always see him making big time takeaways and turning those into goals. His hands are some of the best in the league and he plays the game with a lot of heart," he said of the Detroit Red Wings' star. In addition to his obvious offensive abilities, Jewett is an adept penalty-killer and considers it one of the primary strengths of his overall game. He is by no means satisfied with his development. "I feel that I still need to work on all
areas of my game. There is always room for improvement and nobody is perfect. I listen to what people tell me to work on and I work on it. It’s all about being better than you were the day before," he said. His summer training focus has been on gaining strength while maintaining a high level of cardiovascular fitness with road work and summer soccer. Jewett returns for his second summer with Northern New England in this week's HNIB Summer Showcase. He anticipates a typically strong showing from Mike Addesa's squad. "We all know each other pretty well and most of us have all played together before so the chemistry should be good at the start of our first game. I feel that we will be strong in all categories. We have a great coach and we should be one of the top teams in the tournament," he said. From a personal statement, he hopes to gain notice by college scouts in attendance. He is undecided as to whether he will take PG year or travel the Junior route following his senior year at Berlin. "I want to do whatever is going to make me the best player I can be and get me into a good college. Every player wants to play D1 college hockey and that is what I want to do. I'm going to do everything I possibly can to do so and hopefully it works out," Jewett said.
Northern New England’s Gorski Excels In Both Zones (Continued From Page 46)
He admires the talent and tenacity of the Bruins' Patrice Bergeron, on full display in this year's Stanley Cup Finals. "He's a great forward who can create scoring opportunities (but) he understands the value of defense. He's just as willing to block a shot as a defenseman and willing to grind in the corners, which you don't always get," Gorski said. This week's Summer Showcase is the latest stop in a summer packed with preparation for Gorski, who typically spends the morning's working out at Mike Boyle's and fills his afternoons with skating and conditioning programs at Max Hockey. Though new to HNIB, he likes Northern New England's
chances to succeed this week. "I noticed there are several returning players, so there is definitely chemistry, as well as kids from schools with respected teams. I think we'll have a good showing at this tournament," he predicted. Gorski said, if needed, he will skate a season of Juniors following his time at Philips in order to enhance his chances of playing at the next level. "I''m really interested in playing at the college level. There are so many great schools with good hockey programs. I'm open to all offers," he said. Page 47
Peter Crinella Leads Mass West Charge "I would like to think that my teammates consider me to be very hard working, smart and unselfish. My coaches always talk about my size (6-1, 180 pounds) and my hands which I guess you could say is one of my strengths," said Crinella, adding he is working hard on his stride because "my coaches would like to see me become more of a power forward." Crinella plans to pursue a degree in economics at Holy Cross and hopes to follow his father into banking. With two years of development as a player still ahead of him, Crinella's personal goal is to play at HC as a true freshman, a rarity these days. However, he is not discounting a PG year or Junior hockey. "I am keeping all of my options open. (SC) coach (Brian) Foley has been an excellent resource to me and my family. That decision will be determined after my senior year based on my development. I will look for guidance from my coaches as to how I approach my college career," he said.

Crinella, who led Cathedral with 23 goals and 38 points last year and has 31-25-56 career totals, anticipates the Panthers will locked and loaded for another 1A shot this winter. "We are looking forward to the coming season as we are returning several strong offensive players like DJ Petruzelli and John Leonard. Our defense is young but logged some good minutes last year and will be led by Bryce Peritz and Cam Griffin. In goal, there is none better than (Central/West teammate) John Liquori, who has clearly distinguished himself as one of the best goalies in the State. We are all working hard this off season in the weight room," Crinella said. Crinella admires the Bruins' Patrice Bergeron's for his intelligent and responsible two-way play but, when it comes to role models, looks no further than his older brother Frank, a 2012 Cathedral graduate. "My all time favorite player to watch was my older brother Frank, who starred at Cathedral and won the Bessone Award which is the best player in Western Mass. We played so well together my freshman year in the Super Eight. When he chose to play baseball in college it was bittersweet because I thought we could play together again someday in college. He was the toughest two- way hockey player I have ever seen play and really is my role model," he said. Central/West won HNIB's Summer Showcase last summer, an experience Crinella found especially beneficial. "It definitely helped me in my approach to the high school season. I felt more confident after HNIB knowing that we not only competed but actually won against some of the best players in the state. It was definitely a highlight of the summer for me.," he said. He likes the make-up of this summer's Central/West entry. "I think we compare well to last year’s team. We lost some solid players but there is some really good guys coming in. We have a great goalie and I have played for Coach Kervick in the past and he always gets the most out of his teams. I think we should do well if we play to our ability," Crinella said. "I think the competition at HNIB is a great way to gauge where I am as a player and what I need to continue to work on for the upcoming season," he added. HNIB is just part of Crinella's summer of preparation. He attended the USA Development Camp in Buffalo, NY (June 27-July 3), is skating once a week and has started a comprehensive weight and conditioning program. Additionally, he is playing Legion baseball and represented the West in the Bay State Games (July 8-12) at Bentley University.

- Greater Boston Team Looks For Bounce-Back Summer
H
By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB
oping to rebound from a sub-par 2012 performance, Greater Boston is looking to get back into contention this July. Back behind the bench will be John McLean, whose Malden Catholic team won its third consecutive Mass. Division 1A title this past season. Offensively, Greater Boston will be diverse, with several different skaters capable of putting the puck in the net.
That starts with senior Patrick Wrenn, a key member of that MC team this past season. He should move into an even bigger role for the upcoming 13-14 campaign for the Lancers. The same holds true for a pair of his MC teammates that are here as well. Sophomore Matt Felipe and senior Brian Cameron are more than ready to contribute heavily to the cause. Burly junior Aaron Clancy (24 pts) was a key reason why Catholic Memorial returned to prominence and should be the go-to guy for the Knights this winter. Sennior Ryan Dunn (22

some good size, which will be a big plus. Six-foot two senior Connor Hegarty (37 pts) is a solid two-way threat who starred at BB&N School. He was named the Eberhart’s Flood Shield Award winner. Senior Will Conroy (6’3”) of Catholic Memorial will keep opposing forwards honest. Junior John McLean (6’2”) was a steady force at Malden Catholic. Another MC product to keep an eye on is junior Will Lawrence, another sixfooter. Senior rock Kyle Powers anchored the blue line for Mass D-2 power Franklin and is a returner to the Greater Boston blue line group.
Named to the club following the HS Division Festival were Arlington Catholic’s Charlie Pigott and Adam Hosmer from D-3 state champion Westfield HS. Greater Boston will make due with a new goaltending trio. Senior A.J. Ansaldi was an All-League netminder at Medford HS this past season. Junior Alex Reissis is poised to take over the #1 job at Malden Catholic. Rounding out the trio is BB&N’s Steve Grinzstein, who was drafted from the HS Division Festival.

he Middlesex/Merrimack entry advanced all the way to the championship game last summer at HNIB and the goal is to at least duplicate that effort this year. Looking to make that a reality is head coach Bill Flanagan, the leader of the Northern Cyclones junior club of the new Eastern Hockey League. A leader offensively should be junior Connor Sodergren. The Tewksbury native was an all-ISL performer at St. Paul’s
and has a nose for the net. Post-grad Rob Devaney (28 pts) was the offensive leader at Reading HS last year and brings his talents to Phillips Andover; he is a returner to the Middlesex/Merrimack lineup. Post-grad C.J. Grinnell (36 pts) heads to Canterbury after leading Burlington HS to the Mass. Division I state crown. Lexington native Ben Franks (29 pts) was a key component at Middlesex School this past season.

He will be steady along with Arlington Catholic junior Jack Rogers, a returning HNIB Sophomore All Star. Junior Taylor Farrow from Bishop Guertin and the Cyclones organization will battle in front of the net. Rounding out the blue line contingent will be St. John’s Prep’s Jack Montesanto. In goal, post-grad Dan Curran moves on to Bridgton Academy after a four-year career at Lowell Catholic. Senior John Richard looks to be the #1 guy between the pipes for Arlington Catholic in the winter. The third member of the trio will be senior Matt Andrews of St. John’s of Shrewsbury.

ueled by a combination of veteran skill and leadership and some impressive up-and-coming youngsters, North Shore could be a team to watch this summer. Hoping to meld that talent into a winner is Andy Heinze, the head coach of the Valley Jr. Warriors, now in the newly-formed Eastern Hockey League. Up front, returner Tommy Bishop (45 pts), headed for Phillips Andover after a big-time senior year at Chelmsford HS, will again be an offensive catalyst, as will playmaking senior
Connor Irving of Beverly. (45 pts), another returner. Senior Bobby Mullins from BB&N was an MVP last summer at HNIB, however, a late injury may force him from the summer lineup. Governor’s Academy senior Colton Lafata moves over from the Northern New England entry. Be sure that he will be involved offensively, as will post-grad Matt Bauchman (33 pts), bound for Hebron after a solid career at Methuen HS; he played for Suburban at HNIB last summer.

olid in all three areas of the ice, look for South Shore/RI to be amongst the contenders for the 2013 HNIB Major Showcase championship. Coaching the team once again this year will be Rob Gagnon, who guided his Cushing Academy club to the New England Prep School Large championship this past March. There is a good amount of firepower in the forward lines, led by senior sniper Tim Doherty of St. George’s, who was
amongst prep school’s top scorers this past season with 58 points. Fellow Rhode Islander Brandon Borges made an immediate impression in his first season at Williston Northampton School and should be a top weapon for South Shore/RI. Bridgewater-Raynham’s Anthony Hart. On the blue line, junior Billy Sweezey has already established himself as a solid defender at Nobles and will be an anchor. Trevor Kacz moves on to Cushing for this season after being a top rearguard at Moses Brown. Senior C.J. Mulieri, a Hingham native, patrols the blue line at Tilton School. Marshfield senior Matt Burchill (37 pts) and Braintree senior Patrick Horrocks (31 pts) both have shown that can get into the offensive end of things as well.
Joining South Shore/RI on defense from the HS Division Festival are the Rhode Island tandem of Tyler Duquette (Lincoln HS) and Jeff Scharver (Barrington HS). lways one of the most watched clubs at the HNIB Major Showcase, the Massachusetts/NE Sophomores hope to be a challenge for their opponents and open some eyes. Given the task of molding this group into a successful club is longtime Arlington Catholic HS mentor Dan Shine, and Reading High head coach Mark Doherty. Governor’s Academy’s Garrett Lafata will be involved
heavily in the offensive scheme. Keep an eye on Nick Botticelli, a member of the Mass Super 8 champions from Malden Catholic. Arlington Catholic sends a pair of up-coming players in the likes of Andrew Somerville and Bernie McGovern. Both were on the varsity as freshmen and both hail from Medford. The Catholic Central League will also be represented at forward by Austin Prep’s Patrick Lundy and Jackson Allard of St. Mary’s.

Dwyer hope to have a significant impact at Belmont Hill and Medway HS this coming season. The defense will be led by Billy Roche, who took a regular turn for Mass. Catholic Conference power BC High as a ninth-grader last winter. Ryan Lovell saw varsity time as a freshmen at the Pingree School. Braden King of Lincoln-Sudbury and Brett Kochanski of North Andover were also both varsity contributors in their freshman campaigns at their respective programs. Joe Starck looks to make inroads at
Reading HS this coming year. The same goes for Cameron Hult up at New Hampshire’s Bishop Guertin HS. Tyngsboro native Josh Cole is a member of the well-respected program at St. John’s Prep. The goaltending chores this summer will fall on two local netminders Bryan McGrath of Roxbury Latin and Nick Guadagno of Loomis Chaffee via Newton, and California’s Brandon Schellin, who put up solid numbers for his Santa Margarita team on the left coast.

he defending champions of the HNIB Major Showcase have seen their name change slightly - to Mass West for this season, but don’t expect this young group to backslide. They should be right in the mix again. The club will have a new face behind the bench with Kevin Kervick from the Springfield Rifles organization taking over the job. Once again, a good portion of the team’s roster will be made up of player’s from the Springfield Cathedral program out in
Western Mass. Leading the way offensively will be junior forward Peter Crinella (38 pts), the Cathedral star already committed to Holy Cross. He and Northfield Mt. Hermon junior Ben Freeman (20 pts) should pile up the points. Freeman brings good size at 6’4” Other guys with prep school experience are Avon Old Farms senior Mac Carnes and Cushing Academy junior Nolan O’Connor, both of whom hail from the state of Connecticut.

* Roster was being finalized as magazine went to print Sophomore Ben Wosky from East Longmeadow HS shows great promise. Junior Zachary Prattson expects a big year for Cathedral. Junior Tyler Dowdy is a key member of the Rifles who hails from South Windsor, CT. A trio of youngsters hailing from the Springfield Cathedral program and ready to make the next step up come this winter are Matt Deloria, Cole Foster and Tim Zmuda. Rounding out the forward contingent for Mass West is Westfield’s Connor Sullivan. On the blue line, junior Jack MacNee from Avon Old Farms will be a force, as will Courtney Morgan, a Connecticut resident playing at Deerfield Academy in Western Mass. Junior Nick Rivet comes from the Rifles program, as does junior Matthew Cieboter, who has shown he can contribute offensively in a big way.
Huge blue line roles are in the cards at Cathedral for the sophomore duo of Jordan Tetrault and Cam Griffin. In goal, Cathedral senior John Liquori backboned this club to the HNIB Showcase title last summer and is poised to do it again. He had a solid junior campaign with the Panthers.

ith the offensive nucleus of this club that advanced to the semifinals last summer back, Team Metro is hoping to have another successful run this July. The squad was put together and will be coached again by Frank Golden of the NH Junior Monarchs organization. The offensive leader should be senior Brendan McDonough, the scoring champ and one MVP of last summer’s Showcase. After leading Wilmington to its second straight state title, McDonough will move on to the Jr.
Monarchs of the Eastern Hockey League. McDonough’s former Wilmington teammates - seniors Luke Foley and Cody McGowan - will also have key roles offensively for this Metro outfit. Senior James Currier was a key component of St. John’s Prep’s great season and will be a big contributor to the squad. The well-known Reading program sends two players back for a second season in senior Jake Barbera and junior Sean Verrier.

North Andover’s Chris Nigro is primed for a breakout campaign with the Knights this winter. Senior Brian Bassett hopes to give his Bishop Fenwick team an offensive jolt in 2013-14. Senior Altan Atamer, from the Jr. Bruins organization via Wayland, hopes to open some eyes. Sophomore Kyle Evangelista from North Smithfield HS in RI was impressive in the Sophomore Tournament and added to the club. On the blue line, look for post-grad Derek Donley, bound for the Jr. Monarchs via Seabrook, NH and up-and-coming junior Michael Seibold from Reading HS to be cornerstones. Post-grad Brian Pickett was the glue on the blue line for Wilmington’s two title runs and heads to Hebron. Senior Antonio Manzotti is a Metro returner from Rhode Island’s Johnston HS program. Veteran Club Has All The Tools By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB
With a host of returning veterans couple with some welcome additions, Northern New England has all the ingredients to be a serious title contender. And, add to that the veteran presence behind the bench of Mike Addesa, now scouting with the Calgary Flames after several successful years as a junior coach. Post-grad Brad Theodoulou returns to the NNE lineup, and is also returning to the Boston Jr. Rangers for the upcoming campaign. Senior Connor Jewett is another returner, coming
off an eye-popping 61-goal season with his Berlin HS club. Two more returners are senior Chase Hainey from St. Dominic Academy in Maine, and senior Patrick Bartolomucci, a Quebec native that plays prep hockey at Vermont Academy. Merrimack HS senior Josh Roy, who made a smooth transition to his local HS program, and Pomfret School senior Zach Higgins (via Essex, Jct, VT) are yet to more NNE veterans that have the necessary experience.

* Roster being finalized as magazine went to print The Springfield Pics program is well-represented by two of its forwards in junior Luke Jodoin from Agawam, and junior Chris Gentile from Southwick. Gentile was a key cog in Westfield HS’ state title run this past season. Senior Jake Chaisson was the leading scorer at CMass power Marlboro HS last winter. Chelmsford High flash Jesse Lye is banking on a big season. Hudson’s Zach Chartrand will be a contributor. From the south of Boston comes Middlboro flash Cody Braga (58 pts), his team’s scoring leader last winter. Defensively, the junior tandem of Matt Cappucci and Dan Bates powered Wachusett Regional to a CMass crown and will be more than solid on the blue line. Arlington’s Alec Newell heads off to BB&N to join the prep school ranks. Ditto for Longmeadow’s Nick Drennan, who is readying himself for a post-grad season at Pennsylvania’s Hill School.
Senior Ryne McNeilly was the mainstay on the Silver Lake Regional blue line, while senior Nyle Sockbeson held down the fort at Rhode Island’s Prout School. In goal, senior Ross Mantione from West Milford, NJ excelled at HNIB’s recent Northford CT Festival and earned his spot. Junior Leo Lake backboned his Cumberland (RI) team to a great season this past winter.

aking its initial foray into the HNIB Major Showcase is this Western NY entry, which is looking to jump right in and be competitive right off the bat. This squad will be coached by Nick Nucci, a longtime coach from the Rochester area. In the forward ranks, Nucci will be looking for leadership from the likes of post-grad Connor Guay, who played at Canandaigua Academy, and senior Austin Bull from the Hilton HS program.
Ready to make a big splash is senior Sam Rice, a Kansas native who plays at Hotchkiss School prep. Junior Jeromy Nucci from the Rochester Jrs. was a Sophomore All Star at HNIB last summer. Juniors ready to contribute include Louis Cup from the Monroe County Eagles program, and Connor Davis from Wheatland-Chili HS. Junior Anthony Thurston comes from the hockey hotbed of Rochester while Joe Como plys his trade with Canandaigua Academy.

oal scoring should not be an issue for the 2013 Connecticut/NY entry, as the team boasts a plethora of guys capable of getting on the scoresheet. Veteran coach Jim Salfi, of the Connecticut Oilers organization, is back for another summer behind the bench for this crew. He is expecting a good summer. Up front, senior Joey Fallon, a West Islip, NY native, is coming off a solid first season at the Gunnery School and projects to be one of their go-to guys again this winter. Senior
Stephan Seeger puts up big numbers at both Brunswick School and with the Connecticut Oilers and must be watched at all times. Another senior to keep an eye on is Tom DeFelice, a regular contributor at Cushing Academy. Senior Matt Wikman won a Connecticut Division I state title at Fairfield Prep this past March. The St. Joseph program in Connecticut is represented by two of its offensive leaders in senior sniper Ryan Corcoran and junior Colin Powell.

hock full of fast, talented forwards and some solid defense and goalies, Team Mid Atlantic should be making some noise this summer. Geoff Marottolo, the head coach of the new Connecticut Yankees USPHL club, will be looking to make that happen for the team, the majority of which is made up from players from the state of New Jersey. Two veterans who will provide leadership up front are the two holdovers from last summer’s outfit - post-grad Joey
Campisano, heading for the Jersey Hitmen program, and Hotchkiss senior Cam Neely. Paramus Catholic flash Brian D’Erario and Robbinsville HS star Eric Hildebrand will contribute in the scoring department. Two more seniors - St. John Vianney’s Matt Kidney and Toms River East sniper Charlie Mule, come highly-regarded from the Garden State. Team Should Impress Right Away

By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB
fter bringing teams that have been very successful in HNIB’s Girls Summer Showcase, coach Lenny Vannelli of the CAPD Program in Minnesota has put together this squad for the boys side. The team boasts some fine younger players from the state of Minnesota, with the roster bolstered with some local players from the New England area. There is plenty of talent up front, led by a trio of impressive
skaters from Minnesota’s Academy of Holy Angels. Junior Owen Larson (20 pts) will be a go-to guy in the forward lines. Junior Joe Sullivan looks for a bigger role this winter with Holy Angels; he was named the team’s Matson Award for hardest worker this past season. Sophomore Brady Winkler is banking on a key role with the varsity for this season. Senior Tyler Lodin, also from Holy Angels, will have to be watched by opposing defensemen

lways one of the more hard-working clubs in the Showcase, Team Northeast is looking to be competitive and grab a playoff spot. The bench boss again this summer will be Pat Norton, the head coach at Tilton School in NH. The speedy Joe Osaka brings his wealth of talents from Brewster Academy. Senior Evan Dalaker is coming off a solid campaign at Bishop Guertin (NH).
Keep an eye on Camden Hills (Maine) teammates Jack Orne and Grayson Szumilas, two of the top scorers in all of Maine HS hockey last season. This duo should be able to produce. A pair of post-grads ready to contribute are Spence Cowand, on to Bridgton Academy after a big career at Maine’s Gorham HS. laying out of the tournament’s West Division, team East Coast will leave it all on the ice each and every game. You know the team will be hard-working with the likes of Glenn White on the bench. Up front, coach White will look for production from the brother duo of Derek and Ryan Petti, who led Tewksbury HS to a great season this past March. Derek will move on to play
with the Middlesex Bears for a PG-year, while Ryan will be back to lead the Redmen. Another member of that successful Tewksbury squad, Patrick Doherty, will join Derek Petti with the Middlesex Bears. A returner to the East Coast squad is Hebron Academy senior James Uccello, who moves up to forward for this season.

Colors: Royal/White also has HNIB experience. Junior Blades Shields was a Sophomore All Star last summer at HNIB and should be a solid force. Junior Nick Diduca had a solid campaign this past season for North Andover HS. Kyle Sawyer is hoping to be part of a resurgence at Hudson HS to bring the Hawks back to their state championship form. Kyle Nelson is a mainstay at Rockport HS. Senior Dale Armstrong is a local player, as he plays at nearby Methuen HS. Goaltending for East Coast should be solid with the likes of Tewksbury junior Kyle Paquette, a starter since his freshman season, senior James McCoy from the Monarchs, and senior Austin Wildes, a prep school player from Hebron Academy.

his club is hoping to build on the success that last summer’s club enjoyed and be a serious contender in the West Division. Coaching the team this year will be Dan Driscoll, who brings his expertise from several years behind the bench at New England prep school power Berkshire School. For scoring prowess look for senior Michael Dzoba (65 pts) from Team Ohio to be involved heavily. Senior John Buck is the lone Illinois native on the front lines and he skates at
Loyola Academy. Senior Will Whalen (42 pts) is the offensive leader at his Riley HS squad in Indiana. Senior Taylor Hamilton from Liberty Township, Ohio will have to be watched. Two more seniors in the forward group are Kevin Philbin (54 pts) and Aidan Wilkinson (48 pts), teammates at Indiana’s Mt. Carmel HS. Wilkinson also excels on the blue line. Junior David Stonebreaker from the Pittsburgh area is looking forward to a big showcase. Junior Zach Lawson (62 pts) put up some big numbers for his Ohio Prospects program.

oaded with hard-working players looking to get noticed, the National Sophomore All Star team hopes to be very competitive. Coaching the team this summer will be Rob Gagnon, the head coach at prep school power Cushing Academy, located in Central Mass. At forward, the team will have a multitude of options from a variety of regions.
Both Ricky Walsh (Aston, PA) and Conor Cassidy (Wilmington, DE) come from the Philadelphis Little Flyers organization and have a nose for the net. Justin Vien has already put up big numbers for his Berlin HS team in New Hampshire. Griffin Connor was a solid contributor to his team at Bow HS, while looking for a bigger offensive role in 13-14 is Joe LaValle at NH’s Bishop Guertin HS.

hock full of experience, team South Florida will certainly be in the mix.
Coach Tim Kyrkostas, head coach of the Palm Beach Hawks, has many of his own players on the roster. Twins Mark Sunde and Luke Sunde, were prolific scorers during their high school careers in their native state of Ohio and will try a year of junior hockey with the Hawks program in southern Florida. The same goes for A.J. Fasick, a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana that toiled for the Midwest entry at HNIB last summer. A pair of native Floridians in the forward ranks that coch Kyrkostas knows quite well coming up through the Palm Beach Hawks ranks are Brandon Desrosiers and Ben Silver. Post-grad Brian Engh will hope to get his name on the scoresheet for South Florida, as will Stephen Budkey, who moves to the Hawks program from the Pittsburgh area. Returning South Florida skater Jake Simons heads up to prep school as he takes his talents to Cushing in the fall. Senior Larri Heinonen, from Wellington, FL, and NickAleva, bound for the Connecticut Wolfpack in the fall, are

two more key forwards. On the blue line, returning to the team will be junior Aaron McPheters, who hails from Alaska and was placed on the South Florida roster last summer after a solid Sophomore All Star tournament. Senior Joe Richardson is looking to make a big splash; he is from Lake Worth, FL. Post-grad Evan Stanislav joins the Hawks program from his home state of Iowa, while young sophomore Justin Jones, a Wellington, FL resident, is an up-and-comer in the Hawks program. South Florida will have some experience between the pipes with the likes of senior Chase Green and post-grad Zak Kemble.
