Title Road Goes Through Elite Champ Salisbury Gunnery, Berkshire, KUA All Have Talented Clubs Bears lost just four games last year, including a 3-2 overtime heartbreaker to Salisbury in the Elite quarterfinals. Coach Dan Driscoll boasts what may be the premier line in prep school hockey in seniors Charlie Corcoran, Craig Puffer and Tipper Higgins, all Division I commits. Last year’s top team heading into the post-season, Kimball Union, is still smarting from a first round loss in the playoff round. The #4 Wildcats lost some talent, including head coach Mike Levine (now at Brown), but there is still plenty left in the cupboard for new head coach Tim Whitehead, including Boston College recruit J.D. Dudek. KUA is another team that will have a new goaltender to start the season. Plenty of coaches said to keep an eye on #5 Phillips Exeter. The Big Red have some guys that can put the puck in the net, and a talented, young blue line. Like the SALISBURY won the 2013 NE Elite Tournament title by defeating Founders League rival Kent, 4-1. ard to believe that another season of prep school hockey is upon us. The puck will drop in barns throughout New England in the upcoming days to signal the start of what should be an exciting 2013-2014 season. A quick glance shows that numerous teams should be in the fight to become the New England Elite Division champion come March. It should be an exciting ride. There will be some changes come playoff time. Semifinals will now be hosted by the higher seed on Saturday, March 1st, with the New England championship games slated for Yale University on Sunday, March 2nd, instead of the longtime home of the prep tournament – the Icenter in Salem, NH. Last March, Salisbury School won the Elite Division crown, and with it the de facto title of top team in boys prep school hockey. The Crimson Knights

will stay in that position as the new season kicks off. The key for Salisbury will be to settle on a starting goaltender, with Callum Booth moving on to junior hockey. Brothers Evan (38 pts) and Mitch (25 pts) Smith will spearhead things offensively, while the Crimson Knights boast one of the top two-way blueliners in prep school hockey in senior Will Toffey (38 pts). And, you can be sure that coach Andy Will has brought in a talented cast of newcomers ready to blend into the Salisbury way. There certainly will be plenty of competition for bragging rights, starting with #2 Gunnery. The Highlanders have been amongst the top echelon clubs the past few winters and this should not be an exception. Princeton-bound senior Joey Fallon (28 pts) will lead the attack, along with Kevin Darrar and Ryan Dmowski. #3 Berkshire will also be a going concern. The

Avon Ready For Big Challenge AVON OLD FARMS (16-9-4) With a strong returning nucleus and the usual influx of new talent, expect perennial challenger Avon Old Farms to be right in the mix for the Founders League title and a postseason playoff berth. Senior tri-captains Jackson Tucker and Sam Levin will be offensive catalysts for veteran coach John Gardner. Seniors Mac Carnes and Scott Mulligan, and juniors Chase Zieky and Brendan Ashe are welcomed back as well. The Winged Beavers will unveil four new sopho-

more forwards ready to contribute right away in Liam Murphy (already committed to UConn), Tyler Carangelo, Matt Horton and Dan Winslow. On the blue line, senior tri-captain Sam Loizeaux will be a cornerstone of a group that also returns seniors Matt Cowles (could play forward), Aidan Salerno, Austin Jadovich, and T.J. Dockery. Freshman Ryan Ashe hopes to crack the lineup.] Avon returns two goalies in senior Cody Doyle and junior Tucker Weppner.

Loads Of Experience At Choate CHOATE (15-10-3) With a year of experience under their belts, the Wild Boars look to make some noise this winter, as coach Patrick Dennehy's squad returns no less than 17 varsity performers from a year ago. Up front, senior co-captain Owen Powers, a three-year varsity performer, will be a leader for Choate, a team that returns four of its top five scorers, including Charlie Borek and

SALISBURY (21-5-3) The Crimson Knights got hot late in the season and rode that momentum all the way to a New England elite title last winter. Coach Andrew Will says the goal this season is to play an up-tempo, aggressive style offensively having lost a good chunk of offense to graduation. Salisbury does return three of seven rearguards. Twin brothers Evan Smith (38 pts) and Mitch Smith (25 pts) were key cogs in last year's title run and figure to be just an important this winter. Seniors Derek Barach (21 pts), Neil Robinson (19 pts) and Dylan Holze (9 pts) also return, as do juniors Sean McCarthy and Matthew Muzyka. On the blue line, senior Will Toffey (38 pts) is a gifted offensive player and great athlete; he has committed to Vanderbilt on a baseball scholarship. Junior James Gobetz is also back. With Callum Booth having left for major juniors, there will be a new starter in goal for Salisbury. Competition should be fierce during the pre-season.

Jeremy Germain. Post-grad Gordie Borek heads a list of new players ready to chip in. Defensively, the Wild Boars have the luxury of returning all six rearguards from last winter's club, led by senior co-captain Max Daigle. Senior Steve Yowan and junior Brenden Russ will be avital blueliners as well. In the nets, junior Sam Tucker is already amongst the prep school's elite goaltenders.

Reinhardt New Coach At Kent KENT (18-7-3) The Lions were a New England Elite finalist last season and if they are to repeat that success, it will be under a new head coach, as Dale Reinhardt has taken over behind the bench for Matt Herr. Reinhardt will look to a quartet of forwards to be key scorers and leaders in seniors Brendan Soucie (29 pts), senior Lewis Zerter-Gossage (18 pts), junior Max Kaufmann (26 pts) and senior Dylan McCrory (23 pts). Returning senior goalie Stephen Morrissey looks for a big year, while keep an eye on new junior Josh Hardiman (from Montreal) to have an impact on the Kent blue line.

Pelicans Made Great Strides LOOMIS CHAFFEE (13-11-1) This team made great strides last winter, finishing above .500 for the first time in many years. Coach J.R. Zavisza feels a commitment to defense and staying healthy will be keys to duplicate that success this year. In the forward group, senior Cory Swift (26 pts) and junior Alex Esposito (28 pts) will certainly be go-to guys for the Pelicans. Returning senior Kris VanGameren will be an important offensive piece. New junior Eric Benshadle looks to contribute right away. Senior Matt O'Donnell (22 pts) should be amongst the Founders League's top blue liners; he has committed to the University of Vermont. Junior Zach Giuttari (10 pts) will be an integral piece of the back line as well. Two new juniors ready to step in are Sean Ross (San Diego, CA) and Jack Williams (Suffield, CT). New junior Nick DeSimone (Ambler, PA) will battle for the starting goaltender's job.

Always Potent Cushing Looking For Big Things CUSHING (21-7-4) The defending New England Large School champions have to overcome some key defections over the off-season, but nevertheless return a strong nucleus. Be sure they will have a nice crop of newcomers as well.

Tommy DeFelice Cushing

Richey Boyd (25 pts) will be a solid, two-way performer on the blue line for coach Rob Gagnon. Junior Jack Carroll (10 pts) and senior Steven Windt (17 pts) are both coming off solid seasons. Senior Mack Bernard is banking on a bigger role. Two newcomers hoping to contribute are juniors Trevor Kacz (Moses Brown) and Patrick Horrocks (Braintree, MA). Two new forwards to watch are junior Frederic Cyr (Quebec City) and sophomore Ryan Steele (PEI). The Bulls will depend heavily on the blue line on the senior duo of Matt Thomas and Nick Gibson. Defense, Balanced Attack Key For Seawolves TABOR (8-18-1) The Seawolves struggled somewhat a year ago, but have the potential to be much better this winter, if they can get solid team defense and a balanced scoring attack. Coach Gerry Dineen has some weapons up front to utilize, including senior Joe Slovak (28 pts), sophomore Erik Foley (28 pts, recently com-

mitted to Providence), senior Fred Kaub (18 pts), and senior David Mitchell (14 pts). Two rearguards who will log lots of time are senior Nick Holt and senior Ryan Barnes. Two new goalies ready to go if they get the call are junior Riley Whitham (Hudson, MA) and sophomore Andrew Walters (Pennsylvania).

Northfield Hopes To Pull It All Together NORTHFIELD (13-13-4) Finishing at the .500 mark a season ago, the Hoggers will be looking to be in the race for the league title. Junior Ben Freeman will lead things offensively for coach Tom

Pratt. Freeman recently committed to UConn. Post-grads Bradley Allen and Christian Heidelberger will fit right in. Seniors Cory Moriarty and Isaac Lipton give Northfield two solid veteran defensemen to lean on.

Post-grad Paul Butler and new junior Aiden Weller will see time. In goal, senior Conor O'Brien is back for the Hoggers.

TILTON (18-13-3) With three Small School semifinal appearances in the last four years, the Rams are hoping to get over that hurdle and get to the title game. In order to do so, they will have to replace a lot of scoring that graduated, and find a starting goaltender from a host of candidates in pre-season. Up front, junior Justin Goldman (11 pts) will be a key returning forward for coach Pat Norton. He should get some help from postgrad Jared Baker (Woburn, MA). Defense looks to be a strong point with senior Andrew Sullivan (19 pts) and senior Sean O'Brien (17 pts) back to lead the way. Add in post-grads Andrew Markham (Salem, MA), Trevor Massey (Swampscott, MA) and Nic DiCristoforo (Medway, MA).

Whitehead To Guide Kimball Union KIMBALL UNION (27-3-0) Former UMaine head coach Tim Whitehead takes over behind the bench for the Widcats, and he inherits a team that will undergo a rebuilding process, having graduated 16 seniors from last season’s powerhouse squad. The Wildcats said good-bye to their top four forwards and both goaltenders, so competition for those positions expected to be fierce during the pre-season. KUA will still have some power up front. Senior J.D. Dudek, committed to Boston College, is back for what should be a banner season. Another key returner is junior A.J. Greer, who has committed to Penn State. Three new forwards ready to contribute in a big way are seniors Tyler Bird (Andover, MA), Bobby Hall (Westwood, MA) and junior Jack McCarthy (Wakefield, MA).

PHILLIPS EXETER (15-9-5) A lot of eyes will be on the Big Red this winter, as several prep coaches feel they are vastly improved and capable of causing a lot of noise. Up front, veteran coach Dana Barbin welcomes back seniors Pat Quinn, Kyle Alexander and Cody Rorick, and juniors Stanley Brenner and Sterling Weatherbie. Add to the mix Dartmouth College commit Kevin Neiley (Warminster, PA), brother of former Exeter star Eric Neiley, post-grad David White (Fairfield Prep), Henry Hart (Stillwater, MN) and impressive new juniors Ted Hart (Cumberland, ME) and Andy Espinoza (Abington, PA) and Exeter has the makings of a solid offensive core. The Big Red will be deep on the blue line, thanks to the return of seniors Griffin Py and Austin Fruchter, and the impressive sophomore quartet of Spenser Young (already committed to Providence), Peter Christie, Trevor Cosgrove and Derrick Spencer. Saints Look To Continue Upward Trend CANTERBURY (13-11-3) The Saints saw some marked improvement last winter, a trend that coach Paddy McCarthy hopes to continue this year. Leadership and team building from a solid core of returning players will be a key to success. Veterans that coach McCarthy will be looking to at forward are senior Mark Bowen (26 pts), senior Lucas Habich (27 pts) and junior Shane Seller (28 pts), all capable scorers. New seniors Stefan Malomlund (Tustin, CA) and Sean Henry (Trumbull, CT) add some nice depth.

Strong leadership from its core of seniors will be vital. Up front, Berkshire will have the luxury of throwing one of the top lines in all of prep school hockey over the boards in seniors Charlie Corcoran (48 pts), Craig Puffer and Tipper Higgins. All three are D-1 commitments, with Corcoran headed for Brown, Puffer to the University of Vermont and Higgins to Army. Coach Dan Driscoll will look to senior rock Bryan Gerstenfeld, also committed to Army, to headline the Berkshire defense. Pomfret Turns To Paro As New Head Coach POMFRET (4-20-1) The Griffins welcome Bruce Paro, the school's athletic director, as their new head coach, and if the team can stay healthy, it should see some considerable improvement, according to the new head coach. Senior forward Brett Supinski, recently committed to Union, is coming off an impressive 44-point season and will be a key catalyst up front for the Mustangs, as will senior Aidan Parker (25 pts) and senior Ryan Harper (21 pts). Post-grad Jack Loessberg (Dallas, TX) should have a role. On the blue line, senior A.J. Wallace and senior Luke Hincenberg will be anchors. New junior Walker Hincenberg (Toronto) hopes to step right in. Post-grad Josh Davies (Guelph, ONT) has set his sights on Millbrook's starting goaltender's job.

Nobles Eyes Rebound Campaign NOBLES (11-15-1) Looking to rebound from a subpar 2012-2103 season, a key for the Bulldogs will be to see how new players to the club integrate with returning varsity players. Good team defense will also be a key, with two senior goaltenders having graduated. There is some production back in the forward lines, led by junior Cal Burke (34 pts), who has already committed to Notre Dame. Junior Cody Todesco (27 pts) will be a leader as well for coach Brian Day, while also returning are juniors Miles Wood (18 pts) and Nick Boyle, and senior Drew Bennett. Senior J.C. Brassard (26 pts) should have a big year on the Nobles blue line. Senior Jake Mercier, junior Billy Sweezey and sophomore Pat Murray are all varsity tested on the blue line. A starting goaltender will be named after pre-season camp comes to the close.

St. Paul’s Wants To Be In The Mix ST. PAUL’S (9-16-1) The Big Red is hoping for a big improvement this season and with that hopefully challenging for the Keller Division crown. Coach Mark Bozek is looking to get some leadership and production from the likes of senior forward Luke Babcock, junior forward Connor Sodergren, senior forward Cam McCusker and junior defenseman Vincenzo Renda.

Goaltending, Defense Will Propel Governors GOVERNOR’S ACADEMY (12-12-5) The key to the season for the Governors is rather simple: “This team is built around our goaltending and defense. We will go as far as they take us,” said coach Leon Hayward. The Governors do have back four defensemen who saw time last winter. Seniors Nick Nonis and

Jonathan Ellis, along with juniors Zach Mirageas and Tyler Niven will hold down the fort. Senior Colton Lafata will be a vital cog on offense, as will senior Ted Zimmerman. In goal, sophomore Liam Moore is a returning varsity performer.

Belmont Hill A Force Again BELMONT HILL (23-4-2) The Hillies return a solid nucleus from a club that was very successful last winter (only four losses). So, the confidence is high for another banner campaign in Belmont. The kingpin up front for the Hillies will be senior Will Galonka (42 pts), who has committed to UConn. Senior tri-captain Matt Melanson (23 pts) will again be an intregal part of the offens, as will senior Joe Welch (20 pts). Juniors Charlie Michalowski and

Charlie McConnelll and senior Dan Seibel expect to have increased offensive roles. Defensively, coach Jeremiah McCarthy will be in good shape with senior tri-captains Tyler Granara (10 pts) and Danny Kelly (9 pts), and junior Charlie Barrow (13 pts) leading the way. Sophomores David Giunta and Brian Matthews both saw varsity time as freshmen. The Hillies also return a starting goaltender in senior Ryan McConnell.

Albany Academy Returns Solid Group ALBANY ACADEMY (12-18-1) With a boatload of returners, the Cadets are banking on some added success. To achieve that goal, strong team defense and consistent offensive pressure will be key. Leading the way offensively for coach Eric Cavosie will be senior Jake Marello (34 pts), senior Jake Mayette (15 pts) and juniors Shawn Knowlton (28 pts) and Nick Boyagian (22 pts).

New senior Sean Phillips and sophomore Kevin O'Neil add to the mix. The blue line will have experience. Seniors Kyle Lancto and Aidan Flanagan are key returners, as are juniors Xavier Abdella and T.J. Oricchio. Albany also returns a pair of senior, experienced goaltenders in Josh Egan and Max Ciovacco.

Arrows Optimistic About Chances ST. SEBASTIAN’S (14-11-2) Depth at forward and strong goaltending will be major factors for the success of the Arrows this winter. Up front, senior Corey Ronan (30 pts), verbally committed to UConn, and junior Will D’Orsi (18 pts) will be a strong onetwo punch for coach Sean McCann. Senior Nick Flanagan (14 pts) will be involved heavily as well. The defense will have to develop, as the Arrows took a hit with Noah Hanafin moving on to the USA National U-17 team and Jake McCarthy heading to junior hockey.

Solid Group Back At Brooks Defending NE Small School Champs Will Challenge Again Senior Ian Speliotis (36 pts), a returning All-Eberhart performer, is back to lead the offensive charge for coach David Ries. A host of other forwards return as well, with senior Cam Patch (16 pts), junior K.J. Moore (21 pts), senior Spencer Lehrer, juniors Max Shusterman, P.J. Kelleher and Matt Serrao, and sophomore Vito Bavaro all back in the fold. Making that group even deeper will be new juniors Eric Farmer (St. Lazare, QUE) and Mitch Jones (Skaneateles, NY). On the blue line, junior Chris White (10 pts) and sophomore Connor Moore (18 pts) are returning keys, as are senior Cam Armstrong and senior Zach St. Pierre. Brooks is solid in goal with junior Max Prawdzik, who saw considerable time last winter with the Bishops.

Rivers Wants To Go Further RIVERS (17-9-2) A playoff entrant last winter, the Red Wings will be looking to advance further than the quarterfinal round. Two players capable of big scoring seasons up front for coach Shawn McEachern are senior Miles Gendron and senior Steve Van Siclen.

BB&N (16-8-3) With a veteran defensive group, BB&N could be in for another successful season, provided it can replace the production of three forwards who moved on to the college ranks. The offense for coach Terrence Butt will be built around the senior duo of Bobby Mullins (47 pts) and Cam O’Neill (32 pts), both coming off solid seasons of their own. Supplementing the offensive attack will be new sophomores Chris Butler (Danvers, MA), Mark Addinizzio (Winchester, MA) and Joe DeSimone (Burlington, MA). Defensively, the Knights are blessed with the return of four senior defensemen. Connor Hegarty (36 pts) leads that group that also includes R.J. Caruso, Brien Diffley and Steven Patalano. New junior Alex Newell (Arlington) looks to be an impact right away. In the nets, senior returner Steve Grinzstein should be the #1 guy.

Roxbury Latin Wants To Improve ROXBURY LATIN (6-17-0) Improvement is the goal for Roxbury Latin, which is looking to be very competitive in the Eberhart Division. Senior Robert Shaw will be an offensive leader for coach Mo Randall, while the same can be said of senior Jim Conley on the blue line. Senior Joe Marchetti is returning in goal for Latin.

Young Nucleus Fuels Dragons ST. GEORGE’S (9-12-5) The Dragons have a young nucleus of talent that needs to come together in order for them to challenge for the league title. Defense should be a strongpoint, according to coach Justin Cerenzia With all-league forward Tim Doherty opting for junior hockey, the offense will be centered around the junior tandem of Gino Roy and Hunter Johnson. Two young newcomers ready for action are sophomore Fredreic Gregoire (St. Lambert, QUE) and freshman Toby Almeida (Cumberland, RI). Senior Greg McKinnon and sophomore Tim Baumann will be mainstays on the Dragons blue line. Joining the crew are new juniors Matt Skerkowski (Tampa, FL) and Spencer Shelton (Pte. Claire, QUE), and freshman Colin Felix (Audobon, NJ). Cerenzia reports that his goaltending, while talented, will be young.

Keep An Eye On Middlesex MIDDLESEX (15-7-5) One team to keep an eye on will be Middlesex. The Zebras definitely have the capability of winning the Eberhart crown and returning to the post-season. A big reason is the return of senior Justin Ferreira up front. Ferreira put up big numbers last season (30-22-52). Junior Eric Shaw has already committed to Brown University. Senior Ben Franks will be involved offensively as well. At the back end, senior Mike Menter brings a veteran presence, while junior Harrison Markell is very solid as well. Expect newcomer Justin White (Whitesboro, NY) to fit right in on the blue line. Sophomore Derek Goguen will battle with newcomer Tristan Collins (Allentown, PA) for the starting job in net for coach Joe Mallen.

St. Mark’s Has Potential ST. MARK’S (10-16-2) With a decent crew returning, and some good numbers in to the school, St. Mark’s could be a much better club this season. Last year’s young players will need to step up and contribute more, said head coach Scott Young. Junior Bobby Dray had a big season last winter and should be an offensive leader for the Lions, along with sophomore returners Luke O’Brien and Owen Allen. Sophomore Derek Osik and senior Jeff Cyr are other key returners up front. New sophomore Zach Tsekos (Quebec) should pay immediate dividends. New juniors Adam Lee (Quebec) and Will Santageli (Ontario), along with freshman Ethan Kimball, hope to have key roles. Junior Sean Bellefeuille will be solid on the St. Mark’s blue line. New junior Matt Sarro, sophomore Josh Loveridge and sophomore Peter Hosakos will battle for minutes. Two goalies return in senior Rob Labonte and sophomore Ryan Ferland.

If he has another excellent season, and the Zebras excel in other areas, improvement should be in the cards. Senior Andrew Popp (13 pts), sophomore Mike Brown (17 pts) and junior Ace Cowans will be the offensive catalysts for coach Bill Riley. New young players hoping to contribute right away are sophomores Adam Hauke (Shelburne, VT) and Ward Betts (Raleigh, NC) and freshmen Tristan Smith (No. Caldwell, NJ) and Will Norton (New York, NY).

Tough Schedule Awaits Berwick BERWICK ACADEMY (14-12-1) Faced with their toughest schedule in a long time, the Bulldogs will have to replenish a lot of lost depth on the blue line, but do return most of their key performers up front. Star forward James Winkler left for junior hockey, but coach Andy Lathrop can still rely on the likes of senior Alex Hopkins (26 pts), senior Cam Toohey (23 pts), senior Jake Morrisette (12 pts), and juniors Lucas Michaud (23 pts) and Connor Tully. Michaud recently committed to

the Unversity of Maine. New juniors Connor Ronan (Exeter, NH) and Garret MacDonald (So. Portland, ME) will help out as well. The defense will have to be rebuilt, but Berwick does return junior Liam Darcy. The UNH commit racked up 24 points from his blue line position a year ago. A lot will be expected of new senior Chris Michaud (Exeter, NH). Junior goalie Joe Lazzaro gives the Bulldogs solid goaltending each time out.

Brian Bishop Brewster Academy

Former Assistant Anctil Takes Top Job BREWSTER ACADEMY (8-16-2) The Bobcats have a new leader, as former assistant Jay Anctil moves up to the head coaching position. He inherits a club looking to improve towards the .500 mark. Anctil does have the luxury of six returning forwards, led by senior Joe Osaka. The group also includes seniors Bryan Bishop and Bobby Gray, juniors Conor Lynch and Conor Caffrey and sophomore Teagan Meehan. Post-grads Brendan Murphy (Mansfield, MA) and Tucker

Johnson (Salisbury, MA) and new juniors Alex Marcinkiewicz (Natick, MA), Alexandre Marcoux (Farnham, QUE) and Josh Jordan (Lunenburg, MA) provide adequate depth. Senior rock Blaise Kilroy anchors the Brewster defense. Post-grads Brandon Short (Norfolk, NY) and Oliver Jackson (Newton, MA) and new junior Julien Choiniere-Denicourt (Bromont, QUE) will be immediate help. Senior Ryder Garnsey is back between the pipes for the Bobcats.

BRUNSWICK (13-13-3) Heavy on seniors, the Bruins should be in for a solid campaign, provided they can replace the graduated Gryph Richardson (4 year-starter) in goal. Brunswick should be able to score goals and play tight defense. Up front, senior Stephan Seeger should be able to put up a lot of points and will be a go-to player. Fellow seniors Nick Germain and Sebbi Foster will have key roles. On the blue line, senior Mark Esposito and junior Mike Faulkner will be leaders for coach Ron VanBelle. New junior Max Masyulis comes for Russia and should provide immediate dividends. A starting goaltender will emerge from pre-season camp.

Dexter Has The Horses To Compete DEXTER (22-2-5) The Maroon are coming off a banner campaign, one that saw them lose only two games in 29 starts. If Dexter can get continued strong goaltending, there is potential for another big year. Coach Dan Donato's team should be strong up-front. Senior Ryan Donato (60 pts) should be one of the top scorers in prep school hockey this season; he is rated by NHL Central Scouting. Three new forwards ready to make immediate impacts are the Hingham, MA duo of Matt Brazel and Sam D'Antuono, both juniors, and sophomore Kevin Hock, from Catholic Memorial. Liam Feeney, also rated on NHL Central Scouting, will headline the Dexter defense in front of returning goalie Pat Frazer.

Panthers Have Scoring Back

Kents Hill Coming Off Banner Year KENTS HILL (24-9-2) The Huskies had a banner season in 2012-13, winning 24 games and reaching the New England Small School finals. With a bevy of new faces this year, how fast the team will jell will dictate if Kents Hill can have a similar campaign. In senior Jared Cockrell (58 pts), the Huskies could have one of prep school's premier forwards. Senior Drew Sommerhof also returns to the fold. Coach Larry Cockrell welcomes a solid group of new forwards - including senior Marc-Antoine Bourbonnais (Mont-Saint Hilaire, QUE), postgrad Pat Ward (Canton, MA), postgrad Ryan Bunyon (Westford, MA), post-grad Alex Lind (Sweden), and sophomore Mark Snyder (Cumberland, ME). Senior blue liner Francesco Tolfa (19 pts) anchors the Kents Hill defense. Post-grads Louie Berube (Groton, MA) and Nic Serbic (Vancouver) add experience. Junior Kenny Britton can play either forward or defense.

Brad Potter North Yarmouth

NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY (5-20-0) With five of its top seven scorers back, NYA should be able to improve, even though the Panthers will still be on the young side. Junior Brad Potter (19 pts) and senior Colton Ackerman (16 pts) will lead the attack for coach Eric Graham, with ample help from the sophomore duo of Josh Chapman (13 pts) and Nick Demers. New sophomore Brad Rockey (Scarborough, ME) should help. Senior Jarred Davis had a solid season between the pipes for the Panthers last winter and is back. Joining the goaltending rotation is new freshman Jeremy Thelven from Sweden.

Depth An Issue For Chancellors

Jarred Davis North Yarmouth

ST. THOMAS MORE (4-15-0) Depth could be an issue for the Chancellors. Coach Alex Savioli feels his team will have to be disciplined as a result. Senior Alec Burgess (21 pts) will be a go-to guy at forward, along with senior Brendan Strobel (16 pts). Defensively, senior Taevon Walker (8 pts) will be key, as will new senior Harley Simmers (Chicago). Senior goalie Callen Pyfer (2.99 gaa) will see a lot of time in the St. Thomas More cage.

Sophomore Mike Riley will contribute, while new freshman Cameron Schmitt (Andover, MA) looks to step in and make an impact.

Defensively, the Highlanders will lean heavily on a trio of sophomores to handle serious duties in Matt Cavanaugh (7 pts), Max Trotsky (5 pts) and Ryan Lovell (7 pts). Rye CD Wants To Develop Scoring RYE COUNTRY DAY (15-9-1) The Wildcats should be solid on the blue line. The key will be to find some offensive production to replace what was lost from last year’s squad. Charged with that task will be senior Serafim Rocco and the junior triumvirate of Kyle Halloran, Will Halloran and Blake Beber. New Tommy Bishop Phillips Andover

Nick Gorski Phillips Andover

Derek Britner Proctor Rob Devaney Phillips Andover

junior Riley Van Den Broek and new freshmen Jeffrey Chen and Jesse Lefebvre will add depth. Senior Gabe Regan will be a defensive cornerstone for coach Erik Kallio. New freshman Alex Berger should help out the cause. Rye Country Day does return a goaltender in senior Michael Mossman.

Pat Daly Phillips Andover

Big Blue Looks To Challenge For Playoff Berth PHILLIPS ANDOVER (11-12-2) A goal this season for the Big Blue will be to get some more consistent scoring. It would go a long way to seeing Andover improve and get over the .500 hump. Senior Michael Lata (24 pts), a Toronto native, will spearhead the offense for the Big Blue, a group that also welcomes back junior standout Pat Daly (19 pts). Post-grads Tommy Bishop (Chelmsford, MA) and Rob Devaney (Reading, MA) should help out right away. Senior David Belluche and senior Michael Kim, also from Toronto, are top blue liners back in the fold for coach Dean Boylan. Post-grad Nick Gorski (Sandown, NH) will provide immediate help, and new junior Kyle Moss looks to have a role. In goal, junior Erik Wurman returns and has a bead on the starter’s job.

Jake Pappalardo Proctor

Derek Tillotso n Proctor

Proctor Hopes To Be Competitive PROCTOR ACADEMY (9-16-3) With solid goaltending and a much improved blue line, Proctor is banking on getting some additional scoring punch from its younger guys. Up front, the Hornets return the likes of senior Ben Mello and juniors Hunter Luhman and Derek Britner. Bolstering the offensive attack will be post-grad Durham Gelphi (Falmouth, MA), and new sophomores Jake Pappalardo

(Salem, NH), Derek Tillotson (Bow, NH) and Jack Hall (Colchester, VT). Seniors Mike Damian and Jordan Moore will be defensive anchors for coach Mike Walsh. Post-grad Connor Todesco (Winchester, MA) will be a big help to the Proctor back line. Junior Beau Collins returns between the pipes for the Hornets.

Cavaliers Older And Wiser HARVEY SCHOOL (6-16-0) A year older and wiser, the Cavaliers are hoping that will help catapult them to a better season. Coach Tim Halewicz is looking for a lot of production and leadership from a quartet of returning forwards. Senior Robert Van Raamsdonk was one of the top scorers in prep hockey last winter with 38 goals. Others to keep an eye on are senior Curtis Rattner (17 pts), junior Connor Wilson (29 pts) and junior Keith Lambert (20 pts). A key newcomer to the program will be sophomore defenseman Tyler Levy.

Ravens Strong In The Back PORTSMOUTH ABBEY (6-15-0) Returning their top six defensemen and a four-year starter in goal, the Ravens’ strength will be on the back line. If the offense can click, they should be able to win some more games this year. Coach Paul Ranalli returns a quartet of senior forwards in Kevin Jantz, Zak Andersen, Brian Fredericks and Chris Sullivan that will be counted on to produce more, and help out the likes of sophomore sniper Josh Vertentes (25 goals last season) and sophomore Ben Quick (15 pts). Senior Rob Tuite and sophomore Jack Murphy (11 pts) lead the seasoned group of rearguards. And in goal, the solid play of senior Connor Rodericks will be paramount to any success Portsmouth Abbey has this season.

Hilltoppers Still Building With Another Young Squad WORCESTER ACADEMY (7-17-1) The Hilltoppers have added eight new players to what was a young team last winter. Still on the young side, this is year two of a rebuilding process for coach Kevin Magnani. Leaders in the forward lines for Worcester will be senior Michael Cusato (12 pts), along with juniors C.J. Lannan (13 pts), Jeff Coutu (7 pts) and Aaron Kline. Newcomers ready to step right in are post-grad Pat Flahive (Chatham, IL), junior Stanislav Zanevskyi (Ukraine) and sophomore Mickey Riley (Clearwater, FL).

New junior Nick Correia (Barre, ONT) should log a lot of time on the Worcester blue line. Look for post-grad Jordan Davis (Norwood, MA) to be the Hilltoppers’ starter between the pipes.

AHI’s New England Wolves Off To Tremendous Start Team Is 15-2-2 Against A Strong Schedule By Gary Demopoulos • HNIB News

W

hen the New England Wolves broke camp for the start of the American Hockey Institute's inaugural 2011-2012 campaign, administrators didn't really know what to expect of their unique program. Now, just over one-third of the way through the program's third season, they couldn't be happier. It hasn't taken long for the Wolves to show they belong as a serious choice for the elite player looking to play at the college level. With a schedule full of the Northeast’s top junior programs, both in the states and Canada, the Wolves have more than held their own, racing out to a 15-2-2 record through mid-November. Last winter, the Wolves took home the initial championship in the first season of the Academy East Hockey League, where the Wolves compete with Bridgton Academy and National Sports Academy, among others. "We are extremely pleased of how far our program has progressed since its inception in January of 2011," said AHI Director of Player Personnel Jon Fontas. "Each year we have been able to refine our product not only from a hockey standpoint but also with the other major components of our model, which include academics, food/lodging, off-ice strength & conditioning, and the addition of a 44 passenger bus." The home base of the American Hockey Institute is beautiful Waterville Valley, NH, where the players stay from September -

NEW ENGLAND WOLVES BRAINTRUST: (l to r) assistant captains Jack Musil, Dylan Bader, head coach Steve Jacobs, captain Christian Smith and assistant captain Zak Hayes.

March, practicing every day, and most importantly, taking college courses that are transferrable. "AHI believes that we have a one-of-a-kind hockey development model where players benefit greatly by the state-of-the-art training facilities and vast hockey resources that we make available to them," Fontas said. "Also, the ski resort town of Waterville Valley provides an all-in-one campus setting where everything is within walking distance of their living residence and has the feel of an Olympic village. This environment allows the players to train, develop and focus without any outside distractions. That said, we are convinced AHI is the ideal program for the highly motivated post-graduate hockey player." The AHI coaching staff has remained the same since the program's beginning, with former Cushing Academy mentor Steve Jacobs serving as head coach, assisted by Jay Gallant and Brett Tryder.

In addition to the professional coaching staff, players receive 1012 hours on ice per week (practices/skill sessions), a highly competitive 60+ game schedule with 68 showcases, 4-6 hours of strength & conditioning, townhouse condo style living, two meals per day and two college courses with six trans-

ferable credits. Improvements to the program for this season include; three college courses (English Comp, Statistics and The American West). Each player is required to take two courses which are fully accredited through Plymouth State University (Continued On Page 31)

and are taught on our Waterville Valley campus. Offensive leaders for the Wolves thus far have been Jack Musil (40 pts/Hull, England), Nick Marin (32 pts/Shrewsbury, MA), Griffin Rogers (25 pts/Bow, NH) and Matt Michaud (12 goals/So. Portland, ME). Offensive-minded defenseman Sam Kent (15 pts/+20/Sandwich, MA), along with Andrew Nelson (+18/Staten Island, NY) and Garrett Gunski (+10/Goffstown, NH) have been invaluable in the defensive zone. Eric Bogart (London, ONT) and Parker Bonis (Rochester, NY) have shared the bulk of the goaltending. Joining the Academy East Hockey League has been a positive step for AHI.

“Head coach Steve Jacobs was instrumental in creating the AEHL, his vision was to bring good hockey programs together as scheduling partners that shared the same academic/hockey philosophies." -Director of Player Personnel Jon Fontas "Head coach Steve Jacobs was instrumental in creating the AEHL, his vision was to bring good hockey programs together as scheduling partners that shared the same academic/hockey philosophies," said Fontas. "The concept of the league was to ensure each hockey team member that participates have an academic component attached to it and included in its tuition, whether it’s a traditional or a not-traditional type of education”. "The league is in an excellent position to expand," Fontas continued. "There is no question that AHI benefited by being a participant, not only from its highly-competitive play and talent pool but also from the diversity of our schedule. It was a great experience for our players and organization to win the AEHL championship the first year of the league. Our team made it a goal of theirs from day one and it is very rewarding to be able to reach your goal as a team and set the standard for next year's team." (Continued On Page 55)

Bala Moves To Head Coach Job At Hill HILL SCHOOL (6-16-4) Long-time assistant and Hill School alum Chris Bala takes over as head coach for the Blues and feels his team needs to create more offense by pressuring opponents and creating turnovers. Key forwards for Hill project to be returning seniors Scott McKean and Kellan Rankin, juniors Colton McMenamin and Jake Myers and sophomore Mike Novello. Three new juniors – Charlie Ricard (Leola, PA), Collin Wiercinski (Philadelphia, PA) and Freddie

Monkman (Lancaster, PA) will help out. Defensively, senior rocks Alex Bianchi and Sam Salvino will be cornerstones, along with senior Brandt Beck. Sophomore Trent Thomas also is a varsity returner. Post-grad Nick Drennan (Longmeadow, MA) and sophomore Ben Bala (Quakertown, NJ) give the Blues even more depth at the position. Two goalies return as well in senior Omeed Alidadi and sophomore Jake Cerullo.

More Depth Has Lawrenceville Excited LAWRENCEVILLE (9-13-2) Deeper and more balanced than a year ago, Lawrenceville will cause havoc for many of its opponents this winter. Up front, junior Jordan Kaplan was the Big Red’s leading scorer last winter. Senior Stephen Clarke was a huge presence as well, as was senior John Kowalewski. Sophomore Misha Mrothchek will be a plus. New senior Dylan Smith (Toronto), junior Ryan

Camp (Nova Scotia) and freshman Steven Bray (Mt. Laurel, NJ) hope to contribute. Coach Etienne Bilodeau welcomes back three of his top four rearguards from a year ago in Jack Burt, Misha Song and Joe Stancato, all juniors. New sophomore Matt Hubler (Rumson, NJ) adds quality depth. A pair of sophomores – Zach McCloskey and Monty Cunningham – will be in charge of the goaltending duties.

• Independent • Bridgton Academy Off And Running BRIDGTON ACADEMY Already over 20 games into their season, Bridgton Academy is looking for some consistency. The Wolverines have had both a winning streak and losing streak in their young season. They also have a new coach, as Mike Warde has taken over the program. Goalie Ryan Slatky is a key member of the squad, Other players to keep an eye on are forward Brendan Duff and defenseman Ryan Shea. In January, Bridgton will participate in both the USPHL Showcase in Marlboro, MA, and the Northwood School tournament in Lake Placid.

LASALLE COLLEGE HS  (24-4-2) The Explorers are looking forward to the new challenge of the Mid Atlantic Prep Hockey League. The team will focus on strong team defense, as graduation did a number on the offense. For that all-important production, coach Wally Muelhbronner will look to senior Andrew Romano and senior Kevin Charyszyn. On the blue line, senior Colin Charyszyn and senior Colin Gustafson will be counted on heavily. LaSalle returns a pair of varsity netminders in junior Corbin Gustafson and sophomore Harrison Feeney.

Portledge Will Rely On Vets PORTLEDGE (8-7-4) For the Panthers to challenge for the new league title, veteran leadership must carry the load, according to head coach Jon Sandos. Sophomores Kyle Weller (15 pts) and Connor Fletcher will have bigger roles. Seniors C.J. Young and Andrew Clayton are defensive cornerstones for coach Scott Bertoli. In goal, holdovers Colin Burgess and Mark Anarumo will compete with new freshman Logan Kramsky for time between the pipes.

Nobles Sets Sights On Another Title ‘Dawgs Expect Challenge From ISL Rival St. Paul’s zone and in net, where graduation took its toll. But, at Nobles, it is reload and not rebuild, so don’t expect the ‘Dawgs to backslide much, if at all. #2 St. Paul’s burst on the scene as a legitimate threat last season, reaching the semifinals before losing decisively to ISL rival Nobles. The majority of that team’s nucleus is back, including All New England forward Caitrin Lonergan (61 pts), senior Brooke Avery and senior Shayna Tomlinson. St. Paul’s plans on battling Nobles for both ISL and New England D1 supremacy. Perennial power Westminster checks in at #3. It has been a few years now since the Martlets wore the crown and be sure they are itching to get back. If they do, seniors Tori DeAngelis, Katherine Pate and goalie Brooke Wolejko will lead the way. #4 Choate had quite the bounce back season last winter, as the Wild Boars reached the New England title game and handed Nobles its only loss during the regular season. A hard-work ethic will be key this season for coach Nicole Stock’s club, especially with the

Westminster, Choate Will Be In The Mix graduation of D-1 Player of the Year Pheobe Staenz and All New England forward Briana Mastel. A nice crop of experienced forwards, led by senior Halle Silva, and defensemen has #5 Tabor excited about another big year. The Seawolves hope to start the season strong and take it from there. A big second half of the season propelled #6 Williston into the post-season, and the Wildcats hope to make that a regular occurrence. With experience back at each position, another playoff run will be a strong possibility. With four returning defensemen, and a second team All New England goaltender in Brittany Bugalski, #7 Loomis Chaffee already has vital pieces in place for a successful campaign. The team will be young, with just one senior on the roster. A semifinalist last year, #8 Cushing had to replace 11 skaters lost to graduation. If coach Paul Kennedy didn’t miss a beat with that task, the Penguins will be very involved this winter. A tough squad to play year in and year out, #9 Hotchkiss will utilized its usual strong defensive game to keep opponents honest. Coming out of the tough Founders League, the Bearcats will be seasoned if they can get to the postseason. Rounding out the top ten is BB&N. The Knights came out of the blue and made the post-season party last year and would like nothing more than to do it again under new head coach Ed Bourget. Having an All New England goaltender – junior Katie Burt – in the fold will certainly help matters.

Choate Coming Off Banner 12-13 Season CHOATE (21-2-0) The Wild Boars advanced all the way to the New England championship game last winter. For that to happen again, this hard-working group will need to believe in a common goal. Senior veteran Olivia Bishop will have a key role up front for Choate, where she will be joined by talented newcomers Janka Hlinka (Stamford, CT) and freshman Kristina Schuler (Webster, NY). Defensively, senior Caroline Buckholtz will be a cornerstone for coach Nicole Stock. Two new goalies who will battle for the starting job are junior Lauren Bailey (Freeland, MI) and freshman Claire Marshall (New Canaan, CT).

Berkshire Hopes To Rebound BERKSHIRE (4-13-2) It was a rare struggle last season for the Bears, who look to increase their win total in a big way. Up front, coach Sylvia Gappa will look for leadership and production from senior Lauren Henman. Newcomer Mackenzie Lancaster (Waxhaw, NC) will look to contribute right away. On the blue line, junior Olivia Good and senior Veronique Lortie are returning for another varsity season. New goalie Jamie Ernst will look for playing time between the pipes.

Also back a year stronger are juniors Alexa Lorillard and Lizzy Horwitz. Hotchkiss also

Johanna Slicklen New Hampton

New Hampton Optimistic Returning 7 Of 9 Scorers NEW HAMPTON (13-13-5) With seven of last year's top nine scorers back, the key for a playoff push will be getting solid goaltending, and some steady play from looks like a young defensive corps. Up front, senior Dori Craig (24 pts), senior Alisha Gilbert (19 pts) and senior Gabby Vatour (18 pts) will give coach Craig Churchill solid leadership. Juniors Dempsey Arsenault (24 pts) and Mallory Rushton (23 pts) are capable of putting up some good numbers as well. Senior Johanna Slicklen is also back. Added to the group will be junior Emma Slicklen (Needham, MA), sophomore Jayne Lewis (Troy, IL) and freshman Sierra Lee (Ferguson Cove, Nova Scotia). Junior Allie Munroe (16 pts) is a solid two-way threat on the blue line for the Huskies. Senior Kelsey Corcoran (10 pts) is another capable rearguard. New sophomore Krista Evans (Boynton Beach, FL) and freshmen Julie Lee (Ferguson Cove, Nova Scotia) and Cayla Barnes (Corona, CA) provide solid depth. The goaltending duties will be shared by junior Hilary Cashin and sophomore Heather King.

Loomis Young, But Talented Pelicans Have Only 1 Senior LOOMIS CHAFFEE (13-9-1) The Pelicans will boast a young team, with only one senior on the roster. Despite the youth, Loomis should still be a formidable opponent capable of nabbing a post-season berth. The key returner for coach Liz Leyden is junior goaltender Brittany Bugalski, named to the second team All New England squad last season. Leading the forward group should be junior Shannon Strawinski. Loomis is blessed with four returning defensemen, including the club's only 12th-grader in Hannah Oganeku. Juniors Danielle Comorre and Ginamarie Mangiafridda and sophomore Abigail Marmer are back as well.

LuLu Swartz Kent

KENT (7-11-2) Great strides were made last winter by the Lions, who are banking on building on that success. Coach Shawn Rousseau says he hopes his squad can be more confident at the start of the season and more explosive in their offensive effort. Heading up the returning forwards are senior Krista Federow, senior Melissa Stys, junior Elena Gualtieri and sophomore Alexis

Alexis Banqu er Kent

Banquer. New sophomore Lulu Swartz looks to have a role. On the blue line, senior Megan Wilmot and junior Cassidy Pratt will be key rearguards. A pair of freshmen ready to make an impact are Anne-Sophie Rioux and Jessye Ebzery. Kent will be solid between the pipes with senior Tessie Salatas and post-grad Kacy Rawlyk from Alberta.

Focus Simple For Martlets WESTMINSTER (18-3-1) Still smarting from a quarterfinal loss in last year's playoffs, Westminster will set its focus on being a serious challenger for the New England title this season. A more-than-solid returning nucleus will be a big help for coach David Pope. In senior standout Tori DeAngelis, the Martlets return a second-team All New England selection. She, along with juniors Katie Savage and Erin Ozturk, and sophomore Ashley Carbone, give Westminster a formidable offensive charge. Sophomore Sarah Migliore hopes to crack the lineup. Senior rock Katherine Pate, a four-year varsity performer, and sophomore Paige Capistran head up what should be an excellent defensive unit. New senior Shannon Cherpak brings her talents. In senior returner Brooke Wolejko, the Martlets will have one of prep's top netminders.

New sophomore Micah Pollack expects to chip in. Junior Paige Michel and senior Laura Rollins will be defensive leaders for Northfield, as will senior Camille Belletete. In goal, senior Yvonne Rondeau is back and will compete with new junior Zowie Caouette (So. Windsor, CT).

Brewster Must Rebuild Defense BREWSTER ACADEMY For the Bobcats to challenge for a post-season playoff spot, they will have to rebuild a defensive unit that graduated en masse. The team also graduated both varsity goalies from a year ago. Coach Ellissa Popoff will have some talent in the forward groups, led by senior standout Shannon Godin. Others slated to have big seasons include juniors Ashtyn Bartlett, Elise Hennessey and Amy Livermore, and sophomores Marina Jozokos and Shae McIntrye.

TABOR (17-4-2) The Seawolves were a legitimate threat last season, and on paper look to have a strong unit again this winter. Coach Eric Long is hoping for a strong start to the season. New junior Meredith Vlachos (Bridgewater, MA) and sophomore Victoria Young (Hanson, MA) should step in and have a key role. Freshman Elizabeth Hanson (Stoughton, MA) will be in the running for time between the pipes for Tabor.

POMFRET (11-6-0) Coach Becky Zavisza had quite a decent first year behind the Pomfret bench last season and with a solid group back, could have an even better second season. The forward contingent should be deep, with the likes of seniors Meg McArthur, Candace Lu, Jaycie Luo and Kelli Mackey, all of whom could see time on the blue line as well. Juniors Makenna Newkirk, Abby Horst and Amanda Kewer will be vital to the cause, as will sophomore Lauren Ferraluolo. Senior Gabby Criscuolo will be a defensive mainstay for the Griffins, as will senior Alex Gerew. Senior Kristy Brown and junior Sarah Hatfield will be available for Pomfret's goaltending duties.

Silverman New Coach At Taft TAFT (8-12-0) The Rhinos will be under new management, naming Gretchen Silverman as the team's new head coach. She thinks the team can improve by playing smart, defensive hockey while capitalizing on opportunities. Seniors Rachel Muskin and Sierra Hannough, and sophomore Maddie Leidt are key holdovers up front for Taft. Newcomer Andrea Noss (Orange, CT) will be looked upon for scoring. The cornerstone of the Rhinos' blue line projects to be senior Audrey Quirk. Sophomore Becky Dutton is a returning varsity goaltender.

GOVERNOR'S ACADEMY (16-6-1) Stingy defense (13 shutouts) was the hallmark of the Governors last winter. If that strong defense continues, and the club can get some balanced scoring, it should be another solid campaign. Offensively, seniors Michelle Alonardo and Maria Krull are two key returners for coach Babe Ceglarski. Junior Elena Driscoll, injured for most of last season, will be a big plus as well. Defensively, the group of Hannah Quin, Abby Nearis and Kiley Coffey will be cornerstones. Senior Maggie Salmon is a returning goalie. In all, 11 players are back, and Ceglarski says a handful of freshmen should contribute as well.

ST. GEORGE'S The Dragons will also have a new coach this winter, with Hannah O'Brien taking over control. They hope to be very competitive in the Division II realm of the ISL. O'Brien will have some numbers to work with, as Michaela Ahern, Olivia Consoli, Annabel Grunebaum, Katelyn Hutchinson, Mary Keith, Beth Larcom, Carly Mey, Charlotte O'Halloran, Ito Orobator, Andie Plumeri, Katie Simmons, Olivia Soares and Emily Walsh all return, not to mention some new players to the program.

he Boston Shamrocks’ 2013-2014 season is well underway, and as the team heads into another Junior Womens Hockey League weekend in upstate New York, the Shamrocks find themselves in a pretty neat position, tied for first place in the South Division with perennial league power NAHA.

The start, which includes a fifth place finish at a Labor Day tournament in Vermont and the team’s best opening league weekend since joining the JWHL, the majority of which was held this year at the Shamrocks home rink – Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington, MA., is the best start in the history of the program. And just a far cry from a few seasons ago, when the new program struggled in its first season in the JWHL.

Nora Maclaiine

Sarah Robello

“I think the early success can be attributed to a great core of returning players who are familiar with the expectations, systems and level of competition, in addition to some spectacular additions,” said Shamrocks head coach Josh Hechter. “We still have a lot to work on. Every season our goal is to be better than the day before, in an attempt to play from the first face-off to the last buzzer, a full 60 minutes.” The JWHL features 12 of the top womens programs in North America, with teams like the Shamrocks from the Boston area, to the Washington Pride, the Minnesota Thoroughbreds, and several teams in Western Canada, including the Pacific Steelers from British Columbia and the Edge School from Calgary. League games are held on weekends with one of the teams hosting all 12 clubs in a Showcase-like atmosphere. Each team plays 3-4 games on league weekends. It helps with travel, and allows college scouts to see all teams in one building. (Continued On Page 45)

The Shamrocks head to the Syracuse area this weekend (November 22-24). Also on the docket are trips to Utica, NY and the University of Minnesota in January, Washington D.C. in February, and the league playoff weekend in March, held at the University of British Columbia in March. The Shamrocks are 5-2-1 in league play heading into this weekend’s action, having established themselves as one of the JWHL’s top programs. “The recruiting process over the last four years has been challenging,” Hechter said. “What hasn’t changed is our great location, amazing facilities and rigorous schedule. As the team has experienced more success and our graduating players have moved on to more desirable places, interest has increased significantly.”

“As the team has experienced more success and our graduating players have moved on to more desirable places, interest has increased significantly.” - Shamrocks coach Josh Hechter This year, senior captain Kate Kohl will be the program’s first player to have spent her entire High School hockey experience as a Shamrock. Notable Shamrocks alumni in the college ranks include Dakota Woodworth at Boston University, and Heather Schwarz at Syracuse, who recently was named College Hockey America (CHA) rookie of the week. Current junior forward Taylor Wenczkowski has already committed to the University of New Hampshire. Kohl is amongst the top scorers in the JWHL to date, as is junior forward Jessic Jacques, who is also drawing some Division I interest. Senior defenseman Savannah Harmon has been exceptional on the blue line. Senior Sabrina Dobbins, headed for Amherst College next season, and junior Kassi Abbott have handled the goaltending duties. Post-grad Sarah Robello has been steady, as has senior defenseman Jackie Guy. One newcomer that has stood out is junior forward Nora Maclaine, who last season played on the Mansfield/Oliver Ames co-op high school team south of Boston. (Continued On Page 55)

t was around mid-season last year when Gunnery head coach Harry Geary realized his team had the potential to be a serious threat in the Division II race. He was proved right when the Highlanders won the New England title. With a good group back from that club, Geary won’t have to wait until mid-season this year. Gunnery begins the 2013-2014 season as #1 in the HNIB News Girls Prep Division II poll. The key will be on the blue line, where the Highlanders lost All New England rearguard and playoff MVP Isabela Bagi to graduation. A couple of forwards may move back this winter. The Highlanders do return a starting goaltender in senior Samantha Walthers, and are strong offensively with the likes of Kaitlyn Paiva (36 pts), Kayla Meneghin (26 pts), Sarah Hughson (23 pts) and Amanda Sabia (36 pts) all back. After a few down years, Greenwich Academy returned to the post-season last winter and the Gators definitely have the goods to do that again, and go farther than last season’s quarterfinal exit. Having a four-year varsity player in goal like Annie DeFrino is a big help. Could #3 Governors Academy return to its championship ways? Coach Babe Ceglarski’s club returns 11 players from last win-

Gunnery Looks To Defend Its Crown Greenwich, Governors Will Be Threats

GUNNERY is the defending Girls New England Prep Division II champions thanks to a 4-2 win over Millbrook in the title game held at Cushing Academy last March.

Millbrook, Southfield Hope To Contend ter’s squad that pitched 13 shutouts. The school won four consecutive D-II titles from 2008-2011. #4 Millbrook opened a lot of eyes last season, advancing all the way to the championship game, where the Mustangs lost a hard-fought battle with Gunnery. Millbrook returns senior scorer Melissa Sheeran (53 pts) and starting goaltender Megan Moffat, so the potential is still there. Former Taft coach (and daughter of Greenwich Academy mentor Moe Tarrant) Shannon Tarrant takes over at #5 Southfield. This team has been amongst the powers of D-II for the past several years, but will enter the season having graduated a pair of All New England forwards (Alison Quinn, AnnMarie Ng) and a veteran goaltender in Jessica Thulin. Seniors Briana

D’Avolio and Stephanie DiPietro will be a strong 1-2 offensive punch. #6 Middlesex welcomes back coach Kate Hession after a one-year hiatus with another solid team, led by seasoned forwards Maddie Winslow, Arushi Ray and Cici Frattasio, and defenseman Brooke Gary. They will be in the hunt. The playoffs will be a goal for #7 Brooks, which just missed a year ago. Brooks boasts offensive stars like Bella Papapetros and Danielle Doherty and also return both goaltenders, so expect a nice campaign. Rounding out the pre-season Top 8 will be another ISL school – Rivers. The Red Wings are also under new management, with Malcolm Spurling taking over behind the bench.

Berwick Leads EIL Charge BERWICK ACAD. (14-7-2) The Bulldogs have enjoyed a lot of success the past few years in the EIL and with a strong group of upperclassmen, they should continue that trend. Coach Pat McNulty welcomes back a host of forwards, including Gabby Wiggin, Tilly Burzynski, Tatiana Bradley, Izzy Eldridge, Caroline Hernon, Siobhan McDermott and Anna Cosentino. On the blue line, Kathy Wurzer and Gabby Boaulavanh are back, as are Izzy Ballou, Christina Grassie, Emma Hambright and Kailey Sonricker. Julia Mini is a returning starting goaltender for Berwick.

Saints Hope Big Returning Class Means Success CANTERBURY (4-14-2) New head coach Peter LaVigne is pretty emphatic about what the Saints need to do to get more wins on the docket: score more goals. The defense and goaltending look to be solid. There are six senior forwards returning and they Emma Hannan, Ashley Dineen, Erin McCarthy, Sarah McFarland, Tristan Izzo and Fallon Oeser - will get the charge of producing more offense. New forwards ready to show what they can do are junior Mikayla Castro (Killingworth, CT), and freshmen Mary Kate

Martino (Orange, CT) and Matilda Rooney (New Paltz, NY) Junior defenseman Sara McNamara led the team in scoring last winter from the blue line. Senior Erica Guider and junior Carly Andersen return as well. Postgrad Georgia Kleiner (Pelham, NY) and freshman Emily Martino (Orange, CT) will add depth. Junior Olivia Brasloff is a returning goaltender for the Saints and will compete with new freshmen Chelsea Allain (Ballston Spa, NY) and Siobhan O'Donnell (Massapequa, NY).

Highlanders Ready To Duplicate Effort GUNNERY (22-5-2) With a solid group back from last year's New England championship club, coach Harry Geary know full well that his team will have a target on its back. He says his team will be ready for the challenge. The Highlanders return a lot of scoring punch, so much so that a few forwards may move to defense. Senior Kaitlyn Paiva (36 pts) is one such forward. Also back are senior Kayla Meneghin (26 pts), senior Sarah Hughson (23 pts) and sophomore Amanda Sabia (36 pts). New sophomore Mikayle Michals

(Needham, MA) and freshman Hayley Lunny (Bedford, NY) join this formidable group. Senior Jocelyn Mongillo (14 pts) will be a defensive mainstay. Newcomers on the blue line include junior Claudia Cohen (New York, NY), sophomore Tess Mackey (Guilford, CT) and freshman Ashley White (Bristol, CT). Gunnery also returns both goaltenders from last year's title club in senior Samantha Walther and junior Caitlyn Derosa.

Keep An Eye On Greenwich Academy

Sarah Hughson Gunnery

GREENWICH ACADEMY (11-10-2) The Gators returned to the playoffs last winter and look to make a similar run this year. There is enough talent to do so. Returners Megan Collins and Isabella Crawford will have key roles for coach Moe Tarrant. New sophomore Charlie Johnson can play either forward or defense.

On the blue line, Charlotte Gilliland is back; she led the GA defensemen in scoring last season. Sasha Fritts, another top blue liner, is back as well. Freshman Anna Khoury will need to be watched. Senior Annie DeFrino has been a goaltender with Greenwich for four years and gives the Gators valued experience between the pipes.

KENTS HILL The Huskies won't have a lot of numbers, but be sure they will be one of the better conditioned clubs in the circuit. They also have a new head coach, as Meghan Toomey takes over behind the bench. Senior Meghan Kebalka and sophomore Sarah Arseneau will be key offensive contributors for Kents Hill. Freshman forwards Kerri McKinnon (Saugus, MA) and Leah Dufour (Winthrop, ME) should step right in and play.

Veterans Key Hebron Charge Lexie Stefekos Hebron

Michaela Clark Hebron

HEBRON ACADEMY (6-17-0) The Lumberjacks are looking to improve and possibly challenge for a D2 playoff berth. Coach Katie Ftorek feels that the team's veterans will need to generate some more offense in order for that to happen. Senior Lexie Stefekos will be an offensive key. New junior Rachel Barry (Walpole, MA) brings her offensive talents. Junior Taylor Fowler is another key returner. Handling the goaltending will be senior Michaela Clark. The team also has a solid group of new talent from the state of Maine.

Can Ravens Challenge In EIL? PORTSMOUTH ABBEY (7-7-2) The Ravens will be on the young side, but a good group of new players should be able to contribute right away. Coach Kate Reardon will lean heavily on the leadership qualities of returners Sally Hoerr (junior), Kristine McNulty (junior) and Maddy McCann (sophomore). New junior Molly Sullivan will help out right away, while adding much-needed depth to the roster will be a group of six new freshmen - Diana Oakes (Brookfield, CT), Kaity Doherty (Portsmouth, RI), Jena Villeneuve (East Greenwich, RI), Maida Hoefel (Dartmouth, MA), Remy Chester (East Greenwich, RI) and Grace Benzal (Wilmette, IL).

On the blue line, senior Alexandra Dube and junior Nikolle Storey will log a lot of minutes, getting help from new junior Mary Ellen Cohen (Aspen, CO) and sophomore Emma McDermott (Sandwich, MA). Kimball Union Looks To Make Some Noise KIMBALL UNION (10-13-3) Yet another team with a new head coach is Kimball Union, which welcomed Cail MacLean as its new head coach. MacLean has spent the last 16 years playing and coaching professionally, including stints in the AHL. A trio of veteran seniors will be instrumental in leading the way for the Wildcats, those players being Christine Bouchat-Bonin, Morgan Walsh and Amelie Poirier. Looking to make an immediate splash on the roster will be new juniors Angela Augusta (Windham, NH) and Halle Murray (Lone Tree, CO) and freshmen Isabel Hill (Derry, NH), Lexi Nottke (Reading, MA) and Julia Surgenor (Meriden, NH).

Rye CD Is Optimistic RYE COUNTRY DAY (14-6-0) Second-year coach Courtney Doucette enjoyed a banner first season at Rye Country Day last winter, one she hopes will be duplicated this year. Junior captain Ciara Clare and junior assistant captain Jamie Simensky will lead the Wildcats offense, a group that also includes returners like junior Hailey Shea, sophomores Juliet Fitzpatrick and Charlotte Fleischmann, and freshmen Maddy Lyons and Stephanie O'Brien. New freshman Olivia Weaver will help out. Freshman Sarah Ince is back on the Rye blue line. New freshman Maddie Gaynor will have a role right away. Other newcomers are freshman Gracyn Campbell and eighth-graders Kathering Holtby and Maddie Zuber.

Defense Key For Pingree PINGREE (13-11-0) Returning only one blue liner from last winter's club, it is apparent that the Highlanders will need to get the new blue line corps and goalie on the same page early on. Pingree should score some goals, as senior captain Jill Witwicki (38 pts, 89 career pts), senior Kristina Caradonna (25 pts), junior Leah Heinze (23 pts) and junior Katie Shreenan (19 pts) all return. Sophomore Nicole Khachadourian is lone returner on defense for coach Sarah Carpenter, who will be on maternity leave for the first half of the season, turning over the duties to longtime boys mentor Buddy Taft. Three new rearguards ready to go are sophomore Cara Cahill (Andover, MA), freshman Abby Dirks (Danvers, MA) and freshman Rowan Sullivan (Melrose, MA). New freshman Cece Purcell gets the duty in goal for Pingree.

Millbrook Is Strong Again MILLBROOK (15-8-3) This team made it all the way to the New England title game, and coach Ed Allen is hoping this year's edition of the Mustangs can build off that success. Offensively, senior Melissa Sheeran (53 pts) should be one of the top forwards in all of Division II prep hockey. Junior Meg Lahey will be the team's defensive backbone, while fellow junior Morgan Moffat (1.85 gaa) is a returning starter in goal. The team has several newcomers, including post-grad defenseman Stephanie Heresniak.

#7 Belmont Hill was a playoff quarterfinalist last season and definitely will be in the mix again, with UConn-bound forward Will Galonka (42 pts) leading the offense and the returning trio of Tyler Granara, Danny Kelly and Charlie Barrows taken care of matters in the defensive zone in front of returning goaltender Ryan McConnell. A lot of high-end talent has moved on from #8 Cushing, but the Penguins still have lots of talent and are a solid group under head coach Rob Gagnon. Expect them to be right in the middle of things. “She has really developed much quicker than I had anticipated,” Hechter said. “We all knew how talented she was, what we didn’t know was how seamlessly she would be able to adjust to the quicker more physical play of our league.” With more depth on the roster, Hechter says it has made team practices more competitive, allowing him to add more wrinkles and options to all areas of the game, making for more creative prac-

The team is certainly looking forward to the rest of the season… and playoff weekend. “This is without question the most talented group of kids we have ever had,” Hechter said. “We are currently tied for first place in our division and the team goal is to continue improving and be in a position to compete for the league title. Only two teams have ever won the league championship and we intend on being the third.”

In the end, college placement is the name of the game, and the Wolves can be proud that in year two of the program, they placed their first Division I player, with Collin Bourque headed to UNH, where he is a freshman player with the Wildcats this winter. Other players moving on included Joe Cerulo (Salem State), Kendall Culbertson (Bowdoin), Julian Fialkow (Colgate), Riley Flanagan and Tord Thoresen (Plymouth State), Mike Fish (Fitchburg State), Matthew Heise (Wentworth), Will Humfryes (Becker) and Chris Harlow and Nick Wirth (University of New England). As for the future, AHI is hoping to have as many as four teams under its umbrella down the line. “Our vision has always been to have four teams playing out of Waterville Valley under the AHI model within the next two years,” Fontas said “Ideally we would like to have two boys and two girls teams, however, if for some reason that does not happen, we will adapt to meet the market demand and what will work best in Waterville Valley.” The Waterville Valley Ski Academy which provides AHI’s academic component, has recently added an accredited full-time high school and as a result, AHI now has the option to expand into the U-18 and U-16 levels as well.
