Hockaday A Publication of The Hockaday School A century of individuals involved with the Hockaday community — students, faculty, staff, alumnae, parents, grandparents, and friends — have had a positive impact on each other and the world in which we live. Hockaday, published twice a year by the School’s Communications office, strives to articulate that impact — in the past, in the present, and in planning for the future. The magazine also seeks to highlight the activities of the School and its alumnae, as well as to help define and analyze topics facing our entire community. Perspectives A Message from Kim Wargo Eugene McDermott Headmistress
“Is it an art or a science?” This question has been asked about everything from teaching to the stock market to baseball to admissions decisions. The question itself implies that art and science are an either-or proposition. In this issue of Hockaday, we explore the idea that art and science are two sides of the same coin. In the studio and in the lab, students learn how to experiment, which requires the ability to take risks and to think analytically. At Hockaday, we are making the case for creativity — “the production of something original and useful” — at a time when research tells us it is on the decline in American schools. (See Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman, “The Creativity Crisis,” Newsweek, July 10, 2010.) Spend just a few moments on campus (or with this magazine) to see the emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) at Hockaday: Upper School technical theater students use design-thinking — and power tools! — to create three-dimensional sets for school productions; 8th graders explain concepts of physical science using shadow puppetry; 3rd graders imagine, create, and build solutions for real-world problems in Engineering classes; Middle and Upper Schoolers use digital technology tools to tell stories with farreaching applications.
This year, each and every student will have a handson opportunity to explore the intersection of the arts and sciences. Students from PK through 12th grade will participate with Visiting Artist Carlyn Ray in the design and creation of a piece of blown glass art that will be prominently displayed in the new Centennial Center, the physical intersection of the sciences and the arts on campus. At Hockaday, as we celebrate our Centennial, the task of educating creative girls who can innovate and find solutions is an art and a science. And it’s happening everywhere you look.

NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing Chooses Jessica Cloud Jessica Cloud ’14 was selected as a winner in the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing for her argumentative essay titled “When Twilight Clones Attack” and for her personal essay on the topic “Personal Mount Rushmore”. Across the nation, 753 juniors were nominated by their schools, and 155 were chosen as “outstanding writers.” 2013 is the fifth year in a row that a Hockaday student has won this award.
Hockaday’s JWAC Students Meet Governor Jeb Bush
Brave New Voices 2013 Eliza Schreibman ’13, Kellen Weigand ’14, and Lizzie Vamos ’13 won first, second, and third place on a team of six to represent Dallas in the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival last August in Chicago. Brave New Voices has been featured on HBO, and is committed to building safe spaces that challenge young people to develop and present the power of their voices.
The accreditation process included a self-study process in which administrators, staff, and parents evaluated the program in accordance with Accreditation Standards. Onsite observation was then conducted at Hockaday’s CDC by an early childhood professional. Based on the information collected, the CDC was awarded accreditation through the National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education.
Local National Merit Scholarship Winners Announced Hockaday was the only school in Dallas to have two students — Lizzie Vamos ’13 and Hailey Winston ’13 — receive the National Merit Scholarship.
Knowles is Raising the Bar Eighth grader Marguerite Knowles is raising the bar in the ballet world. Marguerite has attained professional status and is a member in the company of the Dallas Metropolitan Ballet. For the second year in a row, she has been selected by the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in New York City for their summer intensive program. The audition for ABT’s summer intensive is highly competitive, with 300 dancers auditioning and only about 12 are selected for the program. Marguerite was also selected for an offer from the Joffrey Ballet.
Hockaday’s CDC Awarded Accreditation The Hockaday Child Development Center (CDC) was awarded accreditation through the National Accreditation Commission for Early Care and Education Programs. As an accredited center, The Hockaday Child Development Center has been recognized as an
Wechsler Takes Top Honors at Dallas Morning News Journalism Day Emily Wechsler ’14 was named best writer in The Dallas Morning News’ 22nd annual High School Journalism Day & Competition. She also won first place in short feature writing and honorable mention in sports reporting and sports feature writing. Hockaday students who also received awards were Tiffany Le ’14, Hailey Winston ’13, Megan Porter ’13, Molly Montgomery ’14, Annabel Lyman ’13, and Mary Clare Beytagh ’14. The Fourcast also won an honorable mention in the Best Newspaper category. Tiffany Le was among five students selected for a coveted summer internship at The Dallas Morning News. The competition drew more than 1,200 entries from student journalists at public and private high schools across North Texas. The entries were judged by editors, reporters, columnists, photographers, designers, and graphic artists at The Dallas Morning News. FA L L

The World Affairs Council hosted a lunch event Wednesday, April 24 with Governor Jeb Bush, who discussed the national issues of immigration and education. He talked about his success in Florida, as well as what he believes should happen in our nation looking forward. Eight Hockaday students attended the Jeb Bush event.

Tennis Wins SPC Championship
Hockaday Brings Home the Gold Crowns
Congratulations to the Hockaday Tennis Team on winning the SPC championship on May 4. The defending state runners-up went into the SPC tournament undefeated in north zone play. The team defeated St. Andrews and All Saints in the tournament, and played a very tough Greenhill School team in the finals,
The Fourcast and Vibrato were awarded Gold Crowns at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Conference in New York City last March. Seventeen publications juniors, along with faculty sponsors Kyle Vaughn and Ana Rosenthal, traveled to the conference to bring home their awards. Crown Awards are the highest recognition given by the CSPA to a student print or online medium for overall excellence.

Eliza Schreibman ’13 was a finalist for the Ambassador Scholarship Award, which is given to two students who have been very involved in technical theater but who do not plan to major in the arts. Bang: Busting the Myth About Girls and Guns by MARY CLARE BEYTAGH ’14
Though guns seem ubiquitous in the modern world, traditional perceptions align men with guns, not women. An October 2011 Gallup poll, however, reported that female gun ownership is at a record high of 43 percent. For a number of reasons, women are taking advantage of the right granted to them by the Second Amendment. “It’s a feminist issue. It’s a question of power. It’s a question of autonomy. It’s a question of what women want to do,” Kelly said. “Women own guns for all the reasons that men own guns.”

“Come with nothing, go home rich” was the inspirational quote for the Community Service Retreat that took place last October in West Dallas at the Wesley Rankin Community Center. Eighteen students from the Community Service Board attended the overnight retreat and engaged in service learning, relationship building, and meaningful experiences.
It has been a tradition to invite local community organizations and retirement homes to enjoy the Hockaday and St. Mark’s musical dress rehearsals, and this year invitations were extended to students from Wesley Rankin Community Center and T.R. Hoover Center, many of whom had never seen a musical before.

The Fine Arts Board worked with The Promise House to completely redesign and decorate rooms in the shelter. With the careful work of the Fine Arts Board girls, the drab therapy room in the shelter was completely transformed.
Hockaday has partnered with Commit! (an independent nonprofit dedicated to helping Dallas County kids realize their full educational potential) to be effective and thoughtful about where our tutoring resources are best utilized.

I guess the notion of a uniformed artist is somewhat of an oxymoron; the artists of our imagination are always seem to be iconoclastic hipsters rather than plaid-bedecked schoolgirls. However, all artists have to come from somewhere, and I think that being around the Hockaday uniform every day actually made me a better designer. It made me alive to the possibilities of the small detail, attuned to the nuance of a jewelry choice or a lipstick color or even the length of a sock protruding from a saddle oxford. After all, this is how we girls communicated our personalities to each other. To the uninitiated we might all look alike, a sea of green and white, but to ourselves there was a vast difference between the pretty preppy with her fitted blouse, pearl earrings, carefully madeup face, delicate watch and skirt rolled perkily hockaday magazine
just-so and the athlete, hair in a serviceable ponytail, with gym shorts under her kilt and green-edged athletic socks. One girl, slightly older than me, wore a fiery shade of lipstick that became her trademark. Another skirted the edges of the dress code by dying sections of her hair in a rainbow of different colors, prompting a change in the handbook: “Hair must be dyed only a shade found in nature.” Of course, none of our little rebellions against conformity were new. All of my middle-school classmates drew on the white areas of their saddle shoes, or, if you were less daring, on the soles. I thought this the height of outrageousness until my aunt, class of 1958, informed me that a girl in her class had actually polished her shoes red and green, and then when told she had to return them to the regulation brown and white, polished the white part brown and the brown part white. So much for originality! What the

administration was unable to ban, in some cases it cleverly coopted. Take, for instance, the white senior blazer, seemingly an ironclad part of Hockaday tradition. Who would have guessed that it began as a senior white sweater in 1954, and was considered so outrageous that the first versions were locked in an office until the administration gave in and approved them? Although it seems unchanging, the uniform has indeed changed with the passing years. The current generation’s hoodies and polyester plaid skirts would be unrecognizable to the 1930s students wearing long, solid-green wool skirts and middy blouses with ties. The iconic saddle shoe did not arrive on the scene until the 1940s, and the dominant color of the “saddle” has changed numerous times, from brown in the 1950s and 1960s to black by the 1980s to green for today’s girls, who may even choose to wear a Tom’s Shoes version. There have been nods to current fashion,
green and white saddle shoes
including the plaid pants, introduced in 1973 and still available in a green version when I was a student. They were worn with tremendous style by one girl; a lesson to the future designer that what may not work on most people can indeed look fabulous on a chosen few. On my trips back to campus, I have observed that this sartorial language is alive and well, although my ability to read it is now quite limited. Things have changed in ways I would never have anticipated; cell phones have made watches obsolete for this generation, so few of the girls wear what was in my day and almost universal accessory. However, I was happy to notice some things that hadn’t changed, including saddle shoes sporting graffiti — plus ça change, plus la même chose, as the French would say. So let this be my thanks to the Hockaday uniform, unexpected godparent to my creativity. May it inspire many future generations of artists to be alive to the small detail.

The Hockaday English Department Moves into the Twenty-First Century: Where We Are Going & Where We Have Been

As we begin the celebration of our Centennial, looking backward to honor those people, events, and ideas that gave birth to Hockaday, we naturally and necessarily look at the present and then to the future to imagine how Hockaday will evolve in the next 100 years. As an English teacher, I wonder, “What was teaching English like then?” and “What can we do now to ensure it evolves in productive ways in the future?”
Miss Hockaday wanted to prepare her students to be leaders in the century before her, and we want to continue this foundational principle of our school. To consider how we might accomplish this goal through the teaching of English, let us pause for a moment to consider what “studying English” meant one hundred years ago in Ms. Trent’s classroom. From anecdotal information, we can surmise that students learned what she taught them, and learned it well. Stories have it that she was in charge of her classroom, respectfully and gracefully no doubt, but in charge
hints that the sentimental appealed to the women from time to time, but the presence of Harry C. McKown’s 1935 Character Education reveals a more significant aspect of their t houg ht: ou r fou nd i ng mot hers believed education should serve democracy. In fact, McKown’s essay “The Student Council” no doubt influenced Miss Hockaday in creating at our school the first student government in the southwest. Furthermore, because McKown’s reflections on character education extended and revised those of the great philosopher John Dewey, we have every reason to believe

nevertheless. However, if she, Miss Morgan, and Miss Hockaday were stern disciplinarians, a glance at Miss Hockaday’s library tells us they were much more. An 1897 edition of Bram Stoker’s Dracula suggests someone in the group had a taste for the transgressive, while Gertrude Stein’s Three Lives leads us to think the ambiguity of modernism was no stranger to at least Miss Hockaday. Other texts indicate even a wider and more complex range of interests. At one end of the intellectual spectrum, Margaret Sangster’s 1901 collection of essays and poems Winsome Womanhood
that Miss Hockaday solidly aligned her school with Dewey’s pragmatic progressivism. She understood that, in Dewey’s words, “education is a process of living” and that “the school is the primary and most effective instrument of social progress and reform.” For this reason, I believe that she would smile with understanding at our struggle to be, in Ms. Wargo’s words, “nimble” as we negotiate the past and future as we now consider the meaning of “progressive education” in relation to the study of English. department take very seriously our mission to prepare our girls to be leaders across cultures in the 21st century, and looking forward, we want to continue making decisions that will serve the progressive vision of our founder. Returning to Miss Trent’s classroom for a moment, let us sit quietly and observe her teaching. I imagine we will quickly surmise that a young lady did not leave Ms. Trent’s tutelage without knowing and practicing correct rules of grammar in sentences formed with elegant penmanship, and without reciting a variety of literature in precise intonation, standing poised as she did so. History tells us that in the early twentieth century, “teaching writing” meant teaching summary, grammar, and penmanship, and “learning literature” involved internalizing its words and with them its moral lessons, explained by the teacher. Confined to these goals, English classes preserved the cultural past rather than encouraged breaking free from that. Not involving analysis, interpretation, inquiry, deconstruction, reflection, or voice, all of which are basic to the present Hockaday writing experience, writing then
with distinct roles for teacher and student, the former the giver and the latter the receiver of knowledge. In enforcing correct summary, grammar, and tidy penmanship, teachers did not explicitly seek to silence a child (well, maybe sometimes that was the case); instead, she simply followed the accepted pedagogy of her time while also participating in what many considered solid character education. Yet even as teachers enacted these pedagogies, theories about writing began to grow, for English teachers desired to know what might enable a student to write the sort of literature she read, memorized, and often loved. Certainly, such was the case at Hockaday. Literature inspires us to think beyond the literal, transports us into the imaginative; it causes us to wonder. With correspondents such as Gertrude Stein and Eleanor Roosevelt, Miss Hockaday knew the possibilities of writing. She knew that people write because, along with the other arts, writing promotes expression, questions, and answers; it enables a link to the past, to the future, and to those around us in the present. Miss Hockaday knew that if any human invention has been significant to the

In memorizing and correctly applying these rules, a student demonstrated her writing ability and her strength of character as well. “Character,” a Hockaday cornerstone, rings an important bell for us, but its meaning is historically specific, not necessarily embodying the attributes with which we imbue it today, which emphasize the active pursuit of a moral and ethical life, self-assurance, and strength to withstand life’s pressures. As William C. Sewell points out in “Entrenched Pedagogy,” “strength of character” involved following prescribed rules, which the predominance of grammar instruction fostered. More specifically, he says that grammardominated instruction created a teacher-centered classroom that situated students as “passive learners who were deficient in their thinking and therefore incapable of using a language without a teacher to provide and adjudicate the rules of the language.” What resulted was the familiar classroom hierarchy, hockaday magazine
development of the human race, it is the invention of the word. Through writing, we form ideas and communicate them, and by doing so, we share, we change, we grow — and make possible the same in the world around us. In short, we progress. By the 1960s and ’70s processed writing emerged, with the cultural revolution of the era permeating many experimental methods. When teachers began understanding composition as an activity defined as much by process as by the final product, penmanship became a bit messier and rules of grammar often bowed to the ideas struggling to express themselves. Even more, the student’s relationship to her teacher shifted, for through process, students explored ideas, reflected on ideas, created forms for the ideas, with the teacher becoming by degrees facilitator of a student’s discovery of meaning rather than an enforcer of rules and order. Peter Elbow’s Writing Without Teachers, first published in 1973, emphasized the importance of free writing to generate ideas, and his subsequent Writing with Power (1981) emphasized the importance of
revision to give those ideas shape. With his pedagogy, not teachers but students provided feedback to the writer, enabling the beginnings of the writers’ workshop. Using Elbow’s theories, The University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop developed the practice that emphasized the importance of an interactive community to the process of writing. About the same time, Bard College, also in response to Elbow, opened its Institute for Writing and Thinking, based on the principle that writing is an exploratory process that supports teaching and learning in all disciplines. Writing allows a teacher or student — all of us — to discover, because writing promotes thinking. These principles, culled from Elbow, the University of Iowa, and Bard, provide the foundation but not the totality of Hockaday’s writing program. It does not include all the recent possibilities of expression that technology has offered us: blogging, digital discussions, mixed media essays, collaborating on Google docs, digital writing workshops, wiki projects, hypertexts, and much more. This brief summary of our past and present brings us back to the topic of “moving into the twenty-
first century.” The study of English is spreading its wings; it is too restless and its job too large to become isolated in the humanities. We sometimes hear that STEM and the Humanities are adversaries, but nothing can be further from the truth. Rather, they are siblings, bookends, or parts of the flower that is education. As a result, we need to encourage STEM and the Humanities to work together. Programs such as Writing across the Curriculum or Writing in all Disciplines encourage such a relationship. Based on principles of problem-solving, student-centered learning, collaboration, and interdisciplinarity, both programs recognize the salience of writing to all academic study, promoting critical thought and clear communication of ideas both within and between disciplines. Through pedagogies of problem-based learning, a student might write in any number of ways in her classes. She might write to reflect on an idea for JETS, to collaborate dialectically on a science assignment through a Google doc, to persuade a president of a corporation of her solution, to narrate in a blog the story of her discovery, or to reflect metacognitively for herself on a process. The list is long, various, and exciting in its possibility.

In founding our school, Miss Hockaday did not look only at her cultural moment but also into the future. On the cusp of our Centennial, we need to do the same. We want to continue her vision so that our students will think critically through the philosophical, scientific, social, and practical problems they will encounter when they leave us. Along with Miss Hockaday, we want to empower our students with the skills to communicate their visions purposefully, courageously, and elegantly, whether they are engineers, doctors, dancers, teachers, or politicians. Doing so will continue our mission of instilling in our students “an appreciation of excellence in all its forms, and a commitment to what is right and good.” Surely, emphasizing the importance of writing is progressive in the best meaning of that word, in the meaning upon which Miss Hockaday founded our school. IS A STRANGER, WHO CAN NO LONGER PAUSE TO WONDER AND STAND RAPT IN AWE, IS AS GOOD AS DEAD: HIS EYES ARE CLOSED.” – Albert Einstein A streak of cobalt light, a dumbstruck glance at the chipped, glossy polish on my thumbnail and suddenly I feel luminous. Instantaneous luminosity: the number of particles passing through a given area per unit time. I blink back at my shaded reflection on the blank screen — another blue flash comes a few seconds later like an ice cube slipping rapidly down my spine. The video display is programmed to sporadically spit out stringy paths of bright blue LEDs, simulating the traces left by muons as they slip silently and painlessly through me. Above the screen, a sleek black placard proclaims that a muon passes through an area the size of my fingernail about once every minute. Muon: an unstable subatomic particle and heavy cousin of the electron. I’d like to think that, in general, I am aware of my surroundings. If tiny, invisible particles are piercing me about once a minute, I’d like to think I would feel their smarting pinpricks. Yet now this simple museum exhibit is sticking its tongue out at me to remind me that I am hopelessly, gloriously ignorant of so much of my universe. I recall the moment two summers ago — astrophysics textbook sticking like flypaper to my bare thighs as I reclined on the grass outside my dorm — when I learned that all of the stars, planets, and matter that we know of accounts for just 4% of our whole universe. Physicists label the other 96% “dark energy” or “dark matter” to make themselves feel like they have some kind of handle on the situation, but the reality is that they’re just as mesmerized and ignorant as the rest of us. I feel somewhat lightheaded, almost giddy. Does this mean I’ve tasted a muon before? I look down at my thumbnail again. On my walk back to the lab, I wave it in front of me like a metal detector, imagining I’m collecting muons on its surface. I wonder for a moment (silly thought) if more muons pass through me when I dance, bestowing me with that delicious burst of energy that kicks in when I feel too tired to continue but my body wants to push farther.

When I let myself get tangled up in thoughts like this, I am struck by a powerful itch to create. How can I help it? There’s nothing quite so inspiring to me as the elegance and mystery with which the laws of nature conduct themselves. By engaging with the world with an artistic eye, I get the privilege of feeling like I’m a part of the show. As both a scientist and an artist, I strive to actively generate new material, explore shadowy corners, break down conventions, and see the world from new perspectives all the time. Though I have been enamored with the arts and sciences for as long as I can remember, it took a surprisingly long time to choose to define myself by a combination of the two. Art-making, be it through dance or theatre or visual art or music or cake decorating, sustained me in ways I couldn’t express, but I feared that it would be both an indulgent and risky career choice. Physics and math kept me tethered to the world and gave directionality and purpose to my work, but at times I would look at the accomplishments and confidence of some of my peers (largely male) in my college courses and feel like I was already a lost cause. More than anything, I wanted to help others experience the waves of
blissful inspiration I gained from experiencing great art or science that kept me so buoyant, but beyond becoming a professor I didn’t quite know how to do so. I felt tugged in various directions, stretched between passions and obligations, envious of those who were able to confidently pursue the careers they felt they were destined to follow without looking back. Fortunately, fusing science and art is no longer just for those young, quirky, and daring enough to experiment with it. Nationwide educational movements such as STEAM and “sciart” are growing in momentum and revolutionizing the way our education system approaches learning about science, math, and the arts. These innovative fields are not merely proposing integration of the arts into math and science curricula — they are advocating for a true symbiotic relationship between creativity and logical inquiry. The aims of such programs are manifold, and they are showing signs of great success to come. They are helping to encourage students to follow the mold of Leonardo da Vinci, the inventor, artist, and innovator, in order to become more adaptive, improvisational, and intrepid in whatever field they wish to pursue.
STEAM:
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics Rethinking our education system, in regard to math and science in particular, is desperately needed now more than ever. The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has published a series of reports that consistently show that students in the United States score, on the whole, either average or below average in scientific and mathematical literacy compared to those in thirty-three of the world’s other most advanced economies. Male students in the majority of the countries surveyed outscored their female peers, and within the United States alone, male students more than tripled their lead over female students between 2003 and 2009. A team of Duke researchers analyzing gender statistics of seventh-graders scoring in the top 0.01% of

SAT and ACT tests recently announced that boys have been outscoring girls by at least a 4-to-1 ratio in the science and mathematical reasoning sections since the 1980s. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given these statistics, women are in the minority when it comes to getting higher degrees in math and the physical sciences, despite getting more degrees in higher education overall than men. Appallingly, women only make up a paltry 26% of the science and engineering workforce, and women with higher education degrees in science, engineering, technology, or math are twice as likely to leave their jobs as men with comparable degrees. These facts are hardly news to most of us. Decades of seeing this gender disparity in school and in the workforce has led even high-powered intellectuals, notably Harvard’s former president Larry Summers, to conjecture that perhaps the problem is due
in part to innate cognitive differences between genders. As young women start to think about their future careers and notice the abysmal gender makeup of scientific fields that purport to be meritocratic, some part of them will inevitably wonder if gender differences actually do play some part in their intellectual abilities. In spite of this widespread misconception, the U.S. Department of Education also reports that girls typically outscore or at least match the boys in their high school math and science classes on homework and overall grades. It is primarily in the context of a high-pressure environment such as a timed achievement test that girls tend to underperform on the same material that they are mastering in the classroom. Indeed, several recent studies have indicated that the sources of these gender gaps are not girls’ inherent abilities but “cultural differences and expectations.” From an early age, girls rate their mathematical abilities lower than their male counterparts do, even when they are young enough that no such discrepancy exists. Clearly, girls today are getting a message that being a female interested in science is culturally outside of the norm. According to the National Science Foundation, when asked to draw a scientist, most second graders in the United States will draw a white man in a lab coat holding a beaker or test tube, and if the scientist happens to be female, she will typically look stern and stoic. The uncomfortable truth is that such stereotypes are being reinforced both inside and outside of the classroom, both consciously and unconsciously. One common classroom bias noted by the National Science Foundation arises from situations of teachers helping students. If a boy asks a question about an experiment, a teacher will often help him by explaining how to do it, but if a girl asks a similar question, a teacher will often help her by simply doing the experiment for her. The framing of feedback given to a student by their teacher will also strongly influence the student’s perception of his or her intellectual capabilities. A tendency to praise intelligence rather than effort can make female students in particular feel like their accomplishments or failures are outside of their control. Discouragement seeps in steady streams from many sources: the media, the home, and the classroom.

If we intend to reverse this current reality of women feeling spurned by the world of STEM, we need to think beyond narrow-minded BandAid models such as “teaching to the test” and instead consider what possibilities are already latent inside developing minds.

The chime of a recess bell might sound like permission to students to temporarily switch off their brains before they switch back into “learning mode.” The creative forms of logic that emerge from spontaneous games of makebelieve, however, are just as essential to encourage as engagement in the classroom because they nurture the ability to draw new connections, to communicate ideas effectively, and to be daring and innovative in the face of failure. These are the types of confidence-boosters that art is uniquely qualified to foster. A research consortium sponsored by the Dana Foundation, a non-profit focused on brain research, found that “an interest in a performing art leads to a high state of motivation that produces the sustained attention necessary to improve performance and the training of attention that leads to improvement in other domains of cognition.” The same study even discovered correlations between reading acquisition, sequence learning, and music training. A strong education in the arts also emphasizes two specific types of knowledge that are not often exercised in a stereotypical classroom environment: procedural (utilizing fine motor skills) and schematic (based on schemata, or mental imagery). Both of these types of knowledge have proven to be key elements in breakthroughs in science, art, or other fields – for example, Einstein’s inspiration for the theory of general relativity came from his imagining himself riding alongside a beam of light. Sometimes, in order to see a solution more clearly and intuitively, we need to change the way in which we think about the problem entirely. Procedural and schematic knowledge are essential for visual artists, musicians, dancers, actors, etc., but their benefits to fields beyond art are extensive. It should come as no surprise, then, that Nobel laureates are at least two times more likely to be musicians, seven times more likely to be visual artists, twelve times more likely to be poets or writers, and twenty-two times more likely to be an

amateur actor, dancer, or other performer than an average scientist. Unfortunately, most educational environments rely almost exclusively on semantic (language-based) knowledge to teach important concepts, while largely ignoring procedural and schematic learning techniques. The classroom environment that will feel most accessible to all types of learners, however, is one that treats all three learning styles with equal weight, a task that can be daunting for teachers who themselves were probably taught in a language-centric style. Bringing creative arts initiatives into a classroom naturally introduces the possibility of integrating procedural and schematic knowledge, while simultaneously allowing students to take more of an active role in their learning. Certainly language skills are crucial to a well-rounded education, but a calculus class ultimately should not have to rely upon the same structure of an English class. Mathematics courses, for example, demand visual and tactile representations for key abstract concepts so that students can intuitively know why their manipulations of equations result in certain physical changes. One of my favorite physics professors, Professor Howard Georgi, has a favorite phrase to describe finding the answer to a physics problem: “You have to feel it in your bones.” He recognizes that physics and mathematics lose their luster if they are reduced to mere memorization of equations. It is crucial that students being introduced to mathematical and scientific concepts understand that the equations are elegant tools through which we can dig into the world around us, but tools only. The danger of a language-centric educational system is that students will see the equations themselves,

not the concepts they sketch out, as the heart of these rich, textured, expansive fields. Additionally, one of the most important features of these initiatives is that they help students blossom across many varied fields, not just in science and math, as a result of the empowering and creative elements of STEAM- or “sciart”based programming. Evidence from cognitive psychologists across seven major research universities suggests that training in the arts boosts “attention, cognition, working memory, and reading fluency” as well as “motor skills, perceptual representation, and language.” Collaboration and teamwork are essential elements to the process of art-making, making it an ideal classroom tool. Furthermore, creative outlets allow students to express complex emotions they feel but might not fully understand or be able to put into words. Arts-based education also emphasizes learning for the sake of exploration, not learning for the sake of a grade. This in turn gives students the confidence to take risks with their work and encourages the teacher to focus on praising hard work rather than intellect. The arts are a fantastic motivator — the National Endowment for the Arts even found that students from lower socio-economic backgrounds who were actively involved in the arts tended to score higher in both science and writing tests, and were more likely to go to college. In short, arts education provides the natural bridge for gaps in performance in STEM fields by encouraging students of both genders and of all learning styles and socio-economic backgrounds to feel powerful, creative, unashamed of being wrong, and inquisitive.
The rub, of course, is that there is no universal method of art-making that will best suit every learning environment. STEAM necessarily requires teachers to put in the effort to restructure their lessons a bit, to be creative and flexible themselves. Inevitably, incorporating arts projects, particularly of performing arts genres, in the classroom will result in some added logistical problems. Then there is the question of where the funding for these programs is coming from. These are all valid concerns, but I would address them by saying that the students’ efforts more than compensate for the added logistical and financial strain of making that initial step of incorporating creativity into a course curriculum. The role of the teacher in a classroom that embraces the arts becomes that of a leader rather than a spoonfeeder, for the students can share with and learn from one another’s work under the guidance of a teacher, rather than putting the entire burden of communicating the material onto the teacher alone. Yet schools across America are simply cutting funding for the arts, rather than thinking of more innovative and cost-effective ways of incorporating art more fluidly into the curriculum. There is also the concern among some that art, while certainly creative and aesthetically interesting, is not inherently analytical, and therefore cannot serve as an effective communicator of STEM ideas. To this point, I would push back a bit and say that while art as a final product could perhaps be viewed as nebulous or not rigorous, the process of art-making is necessarily deeply analytical, which is why movements like STEAM are pushing for integrating art-making as a classroom activity and not simply advocating showing students more examples of art. Artists must consider not only what elements of the work inspire them, but also how best to communicate those ideas to a broad audience. The value of STEAM is therefore in its interactive component, because it puts students at the center of their educational journeys and shows them that they can choose to explore whatever interests them most in whatever medium they feel is appropriate and truthful. Art and science are, to me, a natural combination – both are experimental and probing in nature; both are interested in limits, boundaries, and the spaces between them; both seek to analyze
minutiae of our world in hopes of finding some clearer perspective on our fleeting time here. Both understand that this search will never fully come to a close, but that fact seems to only propel us further in our searches. While in college I have devoted much my time to physics & math, taking classes in particle physics and differential geometry, and working for 6 months researching the newly-discovered Higgs boson particle at CERN. Yet an equally crucial part of my college life has been spent in the rehearsal room or in the theater as a dancer, actress, director, choreographer, etc., interested in exploring the unconventional sides of art, be it through fostering a theater collaboration between a microbiology class at Harvard Medical School and an experimental theater company based in New York City, or trying to explain the Higgs boson through dance and video technology. I have certainly not figured out how best to fuse STEM and the arts for myself yet, but the beautiful thing about this type of work is that we can all choose to explore the intersection of these two critical fields in whatever ways motivate us most. The myriad of perspectives through which we can explore these complex folds of knowledge and inquiry form the core of what makes these collaborations productive. For me, I have found a kind of truth by diving into physics and performance art, but for others, this could manifest itself as something entirely different. We all have diverse strengths when it comes to our intelligence, and thus we are doing future generations and ourselves a disservice by restricting our ambitions to a single domain out of habit or societal precedent. Maybe the most elegant and affecting discoveries come from the most unexpected places. I want to try an experiment.

Room 208 Middle School
BY SUSAN SANDERS-ROSENBERG VISUAL ARTS CHAIR; MIDDLE SCHOOL ART INSTRUCTOR Four sinks, One kiln room and a massive supply closet anchor the Hockaday Middle School Art Room. There are Five large tables and 22 stools. In an average academic year, two hundred and twenty-three Hockaday Middle School girls (fifth grade through eighth) take art courses in this studio space. For all intents and purposes, Middle School Room 208 is a lab. Whether in this room or in the two Hockaday Lower School Art Studios, the Film/Video Production Lab, the Photography Digital and Darkroom Labs, the Upper School Studio, or the Ceramics Studio, the goal of the Visual Arts Faculty via its curriculum is for each girl to have hands-on meaningful experiences with her work. This includes the act of making and the extremely important activity of reflecting on what she has made and on her individual process. When asked about STEAM in my line of work, and you’d be surprised at how many times people have broached this subject, one specific moment always pops into my head first. We were doing a very basic one-point perspective exercise. My sixth graders were measuring angles, and we were talking about approaching the location of objects as if on a grid by using the graphing concept of rise over run. A student looked up at me and as if a light bulb had gone on in her head she exclaimed, “This is just like math!” I looked at her and said, “Ashna, this isn’t just like math, this IS math.” In my mind’s eye, I can still see the expression on her face. Mixing glazes, and manipulating and causing the chemical interactions that result from electric kiln, gas kiln, and raku firing, isn’t just like science, it is the periodic table in action. Throwing on the wheel is Physics. Making an image appear
via traditional and alternative processes in the darkroom doesn’t just employ science or simply show us science at work. What results is the physical manifestation of scientific processes. The digital photo lab is a vehicle for our girls to reinvent learned darkroom methods via technology and vice versa; this lab is where they reinvent technology by bringing darkroom processes into the mix in newer and newer ways. Film and Video Production is storytelling via the physics of Time Art and the technology of cameras, computer programs, the engineering of prop building, and whatever else the girls can think up. Experimenting with the chemical properties of solutions, viscosity, transparency, the chemistry of color interaction, the construction of objects, or the execution of designs and plans are only the tip of what is happening and what is STEAM in the art studio. In MS Room 208 it is project-based. The projects are designed to help the girls capitalize on their imaginations, develop their strategic thinking and planning skills, learn to execute a plan, practice flexibility, understand visual communication, and affirm their core belief in their own agency. All this, as the girls create images and objects that exist as living examples of their own conceptions and theories. As a faculty, our job is to give them opportunity in the form of our expertise via the many tools at our disposal, and by asking them to listen to their own ideas as they create. Through the principles of design we help them understand the interconnectedness of concept, meaning, composition, materials, form, and function. We guide them as they figure out how to rely on their own decisions and when, where, and how to seek out additional input. We help them realize and access their own power. Experimenting to discover what is possible stands as a key theme across all three divisions. Central to this is the student’s willingness to take chances; her willingness to put herself out there and risk failure on the way to discovering success. It can be messy, and involves detours and do-overs. On most days, the girls are using their senses of perception (mostly touch, sight, and hearing) to experiment in hopes of answering seemingly simple questions like, “What would it look like if I did this? Can I make this stand up? If I mix these things together, what should I expect will happen? What was my intention? What is the perceived outcome? What part of my experiment is working, why, and how could I make it better?” The girls are positing a hypothesis, designing and planning based on a personal vision of what will happen, continually assessing results, redesigning while in the middle of making, and finally, they use their acquired empirical knowledge and edit. At the easel, at the potter’s wheel, and in the studio labs, students combine and put to practical purposes what they have learned in other areas of study. But there is also a bit of alchemy involved. The intangible self that each individual girl imbues in her art, because she is the one who is doing and creating, makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. In the end, a piece of artwork must stand on its own. Synthesizing this artistic process into her make-up prepares each Hockaday girl for whatever her next undertaking entails, whether inside MS Room 208 or beyond. FA L L

I have often thought (and sometimes even said out loud) that if I didn’t teach science, I would be an art teacher. The parallels strike me on a daily basis. Art and science….both are experimental, both grow from creative thought and problem solving, and often the best outcomes spring directly from mistakes and detours. If you are not open to this sort of creative process, new and exciting discoveries may go undiscovered, hidden behind locked doors. Incorporating the creative process in the classroom is not always the most comfortable process. The act of teaching itself is a creative act that makes every day, every class, every lesson different. I feel performance anxiety every single time I face a class full of students. I don’t love the feeling, but I have come to expect it and even embrace it as a sign that teaching is a dynamic, creative, ever-changing process. The day that I don’t feel the excitement and the uncertainty that comes with this job, I know that I am not bringing my best game to my students. I think it’s important to put students in the same place from time to time… to give them situations that they’re not familiar with and to try to get them to act outside their habitual patterns. This feeling of discomfort prior to creative exploration makes learning more meaningful and more memorable. To quote one of my favorite advocates of innovative expression, illustrator and author Keri Smith: “I want them to throw themselves off-kilter for a bit and feel that discomfort and know that it’s okay to be in that place…and, hopefully, to get into a habit of trying new things.” Art can and should be used to ignite students’ interest in science and to offer them a new way of visualizing, understanding, and communicating scientific concepts. Students need little encouragement to express themselves meaningfully in ways that go beyond written reports, PowerPoint presentations, and data tables. They often use videos, models, skits, and art to illustrate science concepts and cycles. These unique forms of output make science much more engaging and visual. In some recent examples from middle school science, students used shadow theatre presentations to make visual the process of transport of water and nutrients through vascular plants. They dramatized threats to the coral reef ecosystem by making haunting videos set to music. They drew comic strips to make the complex

processes of the nitrogen cycle more understandable and approachable. When students can engage with concepts in a creative way, true learning and retention result. When they are not engaged, lasting learning does not happen. Creative, engaged learning seems more like play for students, and makes for an enriched, exciting classroom environment. Science has a vested interest in encouraging this type of divergent thinking, as opposed to the more traditional approaches that reinforce rote memorization and convergent thinking strategies. The Partnership for 21st Century Skills organization (www.p21.org) insists that we must go beyond the “3 R’s” to incorporate a “4 C’s” way of thinking and problem solving: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity. The first three of these have always defined the essence of the scientific process, and the last one, creativity, is a less visible, but always integral part of the process. I was going to close with a well-chosen quote from Albert Einstein, but he was, true to form, way ahead of me on this one and I was unable to choose just one. STEAM: A Student Perspective ELIZA SCHREIBMAN ’13 However, as a Hockaday senior who has both participated in tech crew and engaged in science courses for all four years of her high school career, I couldn’t disagree more. The thought processes and executions of both science and the arts are intertwined, working together constantly, whether we notice it or not. Creative, out-of-the-box thinking is the foundation for both the Arts and Sciences. Whether I’m designing my own experiment or designing a set piece, I have learned how to toss away my inhibitions and dare to dream big, using all my available resources and knowledge to create innovative ideas. At the same time, I have learned that, to make my dreams a reality, sometimes I need to think practically. No…we can’t build a set of intricate pipes to rise out of the floor during the bathroom scene in Seussical. No…we can’t engineer a solar-, wind-, and fertilizer-powered moving flower garden. When executing either science or the arts, you have to find a balance between creative whimsy and sensibility. The end results from the Arts and Sciences are dependent on one another: how could Bernini have sculpted marble without a chisel and hammer, and how could Steve Jobs have marketed his smart phone technology without the aesthetically pleasing design of the iPhone? Many of the greatest fields of study – from architecture to medicine to interpretive dance – are an amalgamation of math, design, chemistry, film, physiology, and every other aspect that overlaps between the Arts and Sciences. Though I won’t be at Hockaday for the STEAM revolution, I couldn’t be happier to see two of my greatest passions, art and science, finally coming together in such a big way (not that they were ever truly separate).

Elizabeth Ostrow Smith ’86 Director - English for Speakers of Other Languages; Director of Global Citizenship BREAKING FROM ROUTINE AND GETTING OUT TO SEE THE WORLD IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WAYS A HOCKADAY STUDENT SHOULD COMPLETE HER EDUCATION. Travel helps students clarify their relationship with the world, teaching independence, global understanding, and self-awareness. Student travel has been a part of the Hockaday experience since its beginnings. Miss Ela recognized the positive impacts of travel, and we celebrate her forward thinking with the current Travel Program. As the Centennial approaches, we are focusing on global initiatives, and expanding the Hockaday Travel Program is part of that effort. In 1928, Miss Ela developed the first travel class. That year, a small group of students journeyed across Europe with two faculty members for seven months. It’s fun to recall that this was before the convenience of air travel. Departing Dallas, the group took the train to New York
City, leaving from the Highland Park Katy station. After a long ride, the group reached New York City, where they boarded a ship across the Atlantic. Over the next several years, Hockaday students would ski at Christmas time in St. Moritz, attend the coronation of King George VI in England, and visit Miss Ela’s friends around the continent. Miss Ela believed that, “The only hope of the world is in real international understanding. Such understanding is not gained just through seeing the architecture, topography, and art of a country, however important these factors are. It is gained by seeing how other people’s minds work, what they love, how they live, and what they believe.” Sadly, WWII brought an end to Miss Ela’s travel class that proved her an educational innovator and early champion of travel as a key part of a superior education.
Miss Ela’s original vision for the international travel class is more relevant today than it has ever been. Here are three reasons why:
The Hockaday Travel Program... NO. 1 CREATES A GLOBAL FAMILY. In every destination, students have the opportunity to meet someone connected to the Hockaday community. The program encourages the connection between current students and alumnae who live and work around the globe. Whether students get to talk to an alumna who runs a NGO in a developing nation or meet an alumna running a business overseas, our students observe the end result of a Hockaday education. Across the world, many Hockaday families with daughters who board at the school graciously open their homes to us, hosting our current students and showing the girls the extended international Hockaday family. Students participate in community service projects in other parts of the world, developing our worldwide commitment to service and friendship. The Hockaday Travel Program strengthens a global community and touches every corner of our world.
NO. 2 THE CORNERSTONES OF COURTESY AND CHARACTER IN ACTION. These trips provide opportunities for students to learn the importance of awareness of and interaction with different cultures. Good character is further defined by good global citizenship. Students at Hockaday are part of a world in which multicultural respect and understanding for others will build bridges between countries and cultures. When students see how other people live and learn to appreciate their own lives, they develop the attributes of empathy, adaptability, ethical sensitivity, and acting morally. In these ways the traits of courtesy and character are woven into a young woman.
NO. 3 TEACHES STUDENTS AS MUCH ABOUT THEMSELVES AS THE PLACES THEY ARE VISITING. Over the course of a trip or upon later reflection, a student may discover she is not as shy as she once thought; she may learn a new skill or find a quality about herself that may one day lead to a career choice or just expand her horizons. The trips are designed by faculty rather than travel agents, and thus the Hockaday Travel Program provides scholarship and athletics in a new setting. Each trip is led by a team of expert faculty who want their students to access information first presented in the classroom in the real world.

Global Education Mission Statement
Global education at Hockaday encourages an educational perspective that inspires students to learn beyond the walls of a classroom, to connect local and world-wide perspectives, starting from their personal corner of the globe. Hockaday supports experiential application of what happens in the classroom; the teaching of knowledge and skills that allow students to share and reflect upon their own points of view and their roles in an interconnected society; and self-reflection that opens students’ eyes, minds, and hearts to the realities of our global world.
What does global education look like at Hockaday? Hockaday Travel Program Peru: Upper School students have the opportunity to travel to Peru for a two-week service learning project organized by Globe Aware. Hockaday students will connect with Peruvian students by learning, studying, and engaging with the culture and people of the country throughout the school year, so that at the end of the year they can travel to Peru and engage in meaningful and purposeful community service projects. Sicily and Barcelona: This trip focuses on the conflict of the old and the new: how the ancient, the established, and the traditional define us, and how our environment sometimes forces us to change. Using an interdisciplinary approach to the Hockaday curriculum, this trip will complement students’ education in the fields of art, culture, economics, politics, history, language, and science by immersing the students in ancient and modern Sicilian and Catalonian culture. England and France: This interdisciplinary trip is designed to provide students with a glimpse of classical history in Britain and France through the lenses of science and art, the goal being to explore the world as it looked before disciplines of learning were distinguished in isolated perspective. Beginning our journey in Greenwich, England, “the home of time and the meridian line,” with sketchbooks in hand, students will start measuring with a pencil, exploring the nature of measurement – from the artistic to the scientific, past and present. (No previous artistic experience is required!) (June, 2014)

Exchange Programs: · Hockaday has entered into a new partnership and exchange program with the St. Hilda’s school in Brisbane, Australia. In September, 2013, two Form I students from St. Hilda’s will attend classes at Hockaday and live with Hockaday host families. In June, 2014, two Hockaday Form I students will spend a month at St. Hilda’s in Brisbane and live at the homes of the girls who were hosted in Dallas. · Hockaday is currently exploring other exchange opportunities, including one with the Taipei First Girls High School in Taipei, Taiwan. · We invite input as we look for more exchange opportunities, around the world.
Global Initiatives: Hockaday students have been invited to a discussion of space and environmental issues with Russian peers at a program taking place at a Russian youth camp called “Orlenok” (Little Eagle), located on the Black Sea about 2.5 hours from Sochi (site of the 2014 Winter Olympics). Students will spend time in discussions on environmental issues and how young people can make a real difference now. The trip is open to Form II students and will take place October, 2013.

As Hockaday moves into its centennial year, a commitment to providing girls essential skills for becoming successful women remains at the core of its charge. Central to this commitment is the cultivation of skills that aid in the ability to successfully navigate a rapidly changing, mediadriven, multicultural world. Technology, social media, and greater travel opportunities have yielded a society characterized by interconnected relationships, broader world views, and a sense of global citizenship. Egocentric identities of the past have given way to notions of international civic duty, and a desire to become key players in the global arena. This expanded world view requires a new set of skills of its participants. This skill set, more appropriately termed “cultural competencies,” is at the core of work in the areas of inclusion and community. Diversity work of the past is often defined by the narrow black and white lens through which many experienced it. Issues were black and white; offenses were black and white, solutions were black and white, and most importantly, people’s opinions regarding those affected by diversity were individuals who were either black or white. Under the Inclusion and Community component of the Center for Global Citizenship, students will experience “diversity work” through an expanded lens. The black and white views of the past will be explored through a lens with an ability to appreciate a broader spectrum of colors. The move from fixing mistakes or negative interactions between communities to developing strong, inclusive, multicultural communities is the nucleus of this work.
What does this mean for Hockaday students? Inclusion and Community work will have three central objectives: 1) Creating a deeper understanding of one’s own culture 2) Understanding, communicating, appreciating, and effectively participating in various cultures throughout the world 3) Understanding and respecting different world views and cultural norms
How will these objectives be achieved? Inclusion and Community work will be realized by: 1) Providing resources for learning about different cultures A. Books, tapes, library resources, speaker series 2) Teaching effective communication strategies A. Community-wide communication workshops to aid with skill development B. Focus group to practice skills and address specific concerns 3) Deepening understanding of one’s own culture to better understand how to successfully interact with others A. Teaching students through curriculum, about cultural norms B. Through programming and class curriculum, exploring the parallels that exist between cultures and learning to appreciate the differences that exist Ultimately, through skill building, the promotion of cultural awareness, and the celebration of differences, students will be fully equipped to navigate their own community and communities throughout the world.

Laura Day—Director of Service Learning
The Hockaday service learning program seeks to develop in our students a sense of purpose and responsibility to contribute to the well-being of all in our community. The program goals are to foster empathy and an appreciation for a broad range of backgrounds and experiences, while providing the opportunity to do real work and develop real skills. We hope to instill a lifelong commitment to service and advocacy that fosters future leaders empowered to work towards social justice. We want our students of all grade levels to create meaningful relationships and conversations with all the communities in which we work and live.
Curriculum Tie-ins · The Lower School at Hockaday assigns a service learning theme to each grade level, on which they focus their learning and attention. The students learn about their themes in class, through reading, field trips, and handson activities. Pre-K appreciates Hockaday’s support staff, Kindergarten works with the elderly, First Grade focuses on animals, Second Grade respects the environment, Third Grade works to fight hunger, and Fourth Grade assists with children’s welfare. · The Middle School receives pre- and posteducational lessons about where their money is donated from the Holiday Bazaar and yearlong break sales. The student council gives presentations on different organizations and learns about the importance of philanthropy. · Different Upper School classes incorporate service work or advocacy into their daily hockaday magazine
activities. The junior health class teaches and advocates for health justice in low-income neighborhoods. Additionally, they teach lessons in local public schools and work on policy recommendations for neighborhoods dealing with health inequity.
Special Programs and Private/Public Collaboration · Upper School students participate in service immersion trips in West Dallas. On these trips, they stay overnight and help local families refurbish their homes. Reflection and education are a major focus of these trips. During the 2013-2014 school year, we will partner with the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, the Children’s Garden at the Arboretum, and the Holocaust Museum to offer internships during the school year. Our Upper School students will train and serve as docents at the various local Dallas institutions. · Hockaday has partnered with Commit! (an independent nonprofit dedicated to helping Dallas County kids realize their full educational potential) to be effective and thoughtful about where our tutoring resources are best utilized. We will educate our students on the state of DISD schools, teach students the proper way to support literacy, and focus the 15,000 hours of service toward tutoring K-3 grade students to read at grade level by 3rd grade.

What does global education look like at Hockaday in Lower School?
Global Citizenship in Lower School engages students in occupying their rightful place in becoming critical thinkers and problem solvers for the world that they will help shape and inherit. They will leave their comfort zones and diminish fear of the unknown by asking questions and seeking answers that guide them to discover the communities around them — both local and global — through service. They will have educational opportunities to build understanding while supporting each other’s differences. Students will impact change whenever possible to support a more welcoming environment, as well as develop a broader sense of the world and their role within it as young global leaders.
The Global Education Program’s goal is to foster cross-cultural competencies necessary for effective citizenship. Through multicultural standards embedded in the curriculum, the faculty will look for new opportunities to teach students the importance of valuing, respecting, and embracing diversity of thought, talent, and background as a critical skill for the future. With the support of our Character Education and Media Literacy Programs, bullying and other forms of intimidation will be openly discussed. Students will be taught new ways to use technology to create greater equality and appreciate differences locally, nationally, and globally through participation in the National Association of Independent Schools 20/20 Challenge.
What does inclusion and community look like at Hockaday in Lower School? The purpose of the Inclusion and Community Program is to examine our curriculum and programming to support diversity and inclusion. Through the study of culturally responsive pedagogy and infusion of our teaching methods, the faculty will become more effective in the classroom. Student learning will increase through identifying, nurturing, and utilizing their individual strengths. The curriculum will also be enriched with school-wide standards for multiculturalism. Multiculturalism provides equal attention to the cultural needs and contributions of all the diverse groups. For example, the faculty will be encouraged to learn and leverage their students’ cultural identities, to support each student’s unique experience to build a more diverse community.
What does service learning look like at Hockaday in Lower School? The Service Learning Program will continue to implement developmentally appropriate projects in the community and build connections, between service and classroom learning. The integration of service learning will be reviewed in the curricula to support students’ mastery of content standards. Each lesson or unit will include ongoing reflection activities. Students will be encouraged to become part of the process, with set guidelines resulting in more active participation. Students will also be taught respect for diversity through designed activities that are for the mutual benefit of the student and those being served from diverse backgrounds.

Our Turn Driving down Preston Road, I was dutifully transporting children to school with my then-14-year-old son sitting shotgun, when I learned how this kid defines the American Dream. As is typical of this particular area in Dallas, we were surrounded by opulence: on our left was a Lexus, on our right a Porsche, and directly in front a silver Maserati. “Mom.” Abandoning his pose of boredom, my son perked up. “Which one of those do you think I’d look best in? I think the Porsche … Yeah. That’s what car I’m going to get when I’m sixteen.” Fighting back nausea, I looked at him. “What planet are you on? And how do you hockaday magazine
think you will pay for one of those cars?” A question I knew had no answer, since his primary activity involves a screen and remote control. Who is raising this kid? I thought. Is materialism and money all he thinks about? Where have all my words of wisdom gone? The hours of volunteer service, the countless lectures on being content with what you have, and all the brilliant soliloquies I’ve delivered on the fact that “stuff” will never really satisfy you— has none of that penetrated his brain? After dropping him off, I passed through the last school zone on my way home and dialed my sister-in-law, who is also one of my best friends. Not only did I need to vent my frustration, I needed reassurance that I wasn’t crazy and
“I think I’m raising little socialists,” I said, “the serve-me kind that are numb to the benefits of ingenuity and hard work, the kind that don’t just need to be taken care of — they expect it.” And why not? That’s what I have apparently been raising them to expect. In that moment and in the days that followed, I came to realize that not one of my five children knew how to do their own laundry. Not one could clean a bathroom — I mean, really clean it. Not one could cook, serve, and clean up after a full dinner. I wasn’t sure my eight-year-old could even cut his waffles.
To be fair, my children can do a lot of amazing things. They are genuinely great kids. But they’d been getting a sweet free ride, especially in their home life. With me stepping in and doing for them — rarely, if ever, putting genuine responsibilities on their plate — they didn’t have a chance to realize their potential. Incidents like these and countless others brought to my attention a malady that had infected my home. Youth entitlement seems to have reached epidemic proportions in both my family and society as a whole — and I was appalled to realize that I, like many of today’s well-meaning parents, am a primary carrier of the germ. With the greatest of intentions and in the name of love, we have developed a tendency to hover, race in to save, protect from

failure, arrange for success, manipulate, overprotect, and enable our kids. Freeing their schedules for sports, school, and increasingly important time with friends, we strive to make our children’s lives easier or to make success a sure thing by doing it all for them. We shower them with accolades, proclaiming how wonderful they are — yet we rarely give them the opportunity to confirm the substance of that praise. All our efforts send the clear, though unspoken and unintended, message “I’ll do it for you because you can’t” or “No sense in your trying because I can do it better and faster.”

that there is a light at the end of this selfcentered teenager tunnel. She delivered on the former but couldn’t help much with the latter because she has a few slackers of her own. After we exchanged similar stories, I had a sobering epiphany.
Those messages are really the opposite of what I want my kids to hear from me. I want them to hear the truth — that with hard work, perseverance, and discipline, they can do anything they put their minds and muscles to. None of us want needy kids. We want them to be equipped to conquer the world, rather than waiting for it to serve them. The only way to conquer youth entitlement is one house at a time. What a privilege we have to celebrate all that these kids have to offer and to help them realize their potential by bringing on the work. It’s incredibly exciting to consider the abundant possibilities just around the corner for a generation empowered by parents and other adults who believe in them, support them by teaching real-life skills, and then pile on the responsibility. Think about the ramifications of unleashing this tech-savvy crew on global economic issues, seemingly incurable diseases, and age-old political conflict. So here’s to seeing what can happen when we tell our kids, “I believe in you, and I’m going to prove it by putting you to work.”

Immediately after college, I became intimately acquainted with the turbulent teenage years as a youth director in a Dallas megachurch. With 600 in my junior-high division, I quickly learned that teenagers between the ages of 13 and 16 come in like lambs — and go out like lions. Meanwhile, moms know nothing and dads are dinosaurs! Ever since those days, I’ve counseled countless wellintentioned parents who are filled with perplexity and pain. Let’s face it: No parent wants to be perceived as the villain wearing “the black hat” in the family. Every parent wants to be liked, listened to, and loved. However, some parents assume the solution to this problem is permissiveness: Permit teens to do whatever they want (often against a parent’s better judgment) so that the family can live in peace. Consequently, for those who “cross the line,” this means … no reprimand, no rebuke, and no repercussion. But this passive, peace-at-any-price approach won’t reap the positive results parents desire: selfdisciplined teens who respect their parents’ role and responsibility to set the rules.

Time Can Turn Black Hats ...White On a flight from Los Angeles to Dallas, while sitting beside a college freshman, I asked,
“Did your parents ever give you boundaries?” “Yep,” he quickly answered. “Did they enforce them?”
“Oh yeah,” he assured with a nod. “Last year, my parents set a midnight curfew … but one night I came in around 2:00 a.m. — and that was it! They refused to let me drive my car for two weeks.” “How did that impact you?”
“It was awful,” he moaned. “Every day I had to ask somebody to drive me to school … then I had to ask someone else to take me home. I also needed transportation to and from all my extracurricular activities. I couldn’t do anything for myself.”
“Did that repercussion make any difference in your life?”

“You bet it did — whenever I was out late, I watched the time like a hawk!” “Did you feel your parents were unloving?”
“No — my parents did what they did because they loved me.”
“Did you feel that the repercussion was excessive?”
“Oh, at the time I thought it was excessive, but all kids think that way when their parents enforce a consequence they don’t like. Yet today, I see how being without my car helped me become much more time conscious. Now that I’m on my own at Texas A&M University, I’m thankful for what my parents did. In fact, I think they’re great!” The moral of this story could be summarized this way: To teens, parents who enforce boundaries may appear to wear the black hat, but one day they’ll see that black hat … turn white!
The Two R’s— Repercussions and Reward Though I had never met this student’s parents, I learned much about them from their son. He was blessed with parents who knew the value of boundaries with both repercussions and rewards. “Boundaries” are established limits — lines not to be crossed. If the teen exceeds the boundary,
the result is a repercussion. If the teen maintains the boundary, the result is a reward. Kids understand boundaries. They already live with them — from sideline stripes on playing fields to curbs on city streets. When parents establish boundaries, their teens are given a choice: Go beyond the boundaries or stay within them. Realize this point: It’s the teenager – not the parent – who chooses the repercussion or reward. And this means by using boundaries, parents no longer wear the black hat! Wise parents recognize that the goal of external boundaries is to build inner character. In turn, inner character produces trust. And trust is the major building block for bonding in all relationships. To implement consistently fair repercussions and rewards isn’t always easy. But if you are a parent, you long for (you pray for) a relationship of respect with your child — a loving relationship that will last a lifetime. The very best way to achieve this kind of bonding is … through boundaries!

1952JC Class Agent – Communications: Betty Taylor Cox bjtwhcsb@aol.com We’ve gotten into the habit of celebrating this year, as so many of us reach a big birthday. We loved celebrating at the Fort Worth Stockyards with Alice (Bert) McCart Walters last summer, and several of us drove to Wimberley in late November to celebrate with Lila Luckie McCall. Wherever and however you’re celebrating, we wish each and every one a happy birthday! The Hill Country “big” birthday bash for Lila was one to remember. Her friends set out to invite 80 friends to celebrate her 80th, and 123 people came! Hockaday friends came from Austin, Dallas, and Fort Worth, and included Sonia Wolf Wilson and her husband, Sam, from Austin; Alice (Bert) McCart Walters and her husband, Leon, from Fort Worth; and a carload from Dallas including Eva Jane Potter Morgan, Betty Taylor Cox, and Peggy Davis Greenstreet and her husband, Ross. We celebrated with a Hill Country spread in a friend’s house, high over the river in Wimberley, and even more special, one of Lila’s great breakfasts in her home, with guests scattered along the big porches that ring two sides of her house. The weather cooperated, and it was balmy on the 29th of November. Other big birthdays to date: Lanette Sherman Sullivan of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, and her family held a birthday luncheon in Dallas in December, with many generations of family and friends there to celebrate. And I (Betty Taylor Cox) had a big birthday jam session in February at home with musician friends and my brother Bill, a jazz trumpeter, to make a happy noise! (We warned, and invited, the neighbors.) Patty Cordonnier Smith of Midland, Texas, celebrated another major anniversary

1951JC The Junior College Class of 1951 lost two classmates this year. Pat Faber Boike passed away March 12, 2013. Patsy Harper Leftwich passed away April 28, 2013.

in January 2013, when she retired after 52 years with Midland’s schools. A teacher, she co-founded the city’s successful and nationally noted storytelling festival 20 years ago. This year it was held November 26-December 13, 2012, with events involving many of the city’s residents, children to adults, both public and private schools. She has served as the festival’s director and marketing director. She envisioned the festival, modeled on the national storytelling festival held annually in Jonesboro, Tennessee, and helped to bring the concept to Midland. National leaders point to her program as the “national model for storytelling applied to education.” Other news: Dottie Stacy Wood is continuing 25 or 30 years of morning walks (and coffee) with her neighborhood walking group. They walk a couple of miles, beginning about 6:30 a.m., then have coffee and biscuits or sweets at a neighbor’s house. An idea for all of us? Lanette Sherman Sullivan and her sister, Billye Sherman Taylor ’47, joined Lanette’s daughter, Lisa Baker Clarke ’81, at The University of Texas at Austin in November, celebrating their Tri Delt centennial there, then stopped by Dallas for lunch with several of us. Lanette has made an almost instantaneous recovery from surgery, and her sister came from Lake Hamilton, Florida, to join her for the Austin and Dallas trip. In December, her family celebrated Lanette’s big birthday with a luncheon in Dallas for many generations of her family and friends. And our annual “Weekend at Lila’s” in the Hill Country at Lila Luckie McCall’s Texas ranch house with the big wraparound porch was May 10–12. The bluebonnets were few, but Sonia Wolf Wilson came from Austin, Martha Ann Knapp Linden from Houston with her two daughters, Lanette Sherman Sullivan from East Texas, Peggy Davis Greenstreet and I from Dallas, and Alice (Bert) McCart

Walters and her husband, Leon, from Fort Worth. We had a Hill Country feast at Lila’s, made a quick visit to Fredericksburg, and discovered that two of our group have a hand in teaching Texas students about the United States Constitution — Lanette as a member of the Dallas Bar in 1971 wrote the text for statewide use by teachers, and Lila is currently giving copies of the Constitution from the Heritage Society to sixth graders in her area. There’s some progress to report on the New Mexico “Barn-ominium” — named by Bert Walters’ daughter, Robbie. It’s the art studio and vacation home she’s designing in far western New Mexico. She and her husband Leon, a sculptor, have enjoyed frequent trips there to work on the place and enjoy the beauty of this isolated and scenic location. With several artists now living here, the nearby town of Hillsboro is becoming known as an art center. Ann Ferguson Williams has officially handed some of the chores of running her ranch to her sons and is still enjoying the place that has been in her family for so long, near Decatur. And a note from Carol Stirman Barton of Athens, Texas, reports that she has just returned from two weeks with her children on a National Geographic boat trip down the Columbia River, with sightseeing on the coast of Oregon. She learned, she says, after recent knee operations, that “I should not plan to climb every mountain.” But she’s still traveling as a member of the Athens City Council. Eleanor Polk Pearson continues to manage her plantation property along the river at Carville, Louisiana, north of New Orleans, her home for 26 years. Sue Verhalen Padgett, Dallas, has taken up silversmithing and jewelry design. She’s creating bronze and sterling “avant garde” jewelry, working with natural objects like leaves. And Sonia Wolf Wilson of Austin, Texas, reports that her granddaughter was Queen of Diamonds for the Austin Symphony’s 57th annual Jewel Ball on October 15. Sonia has been active in the Women’s Symphony League of Austin and was there to see Catherine Elizabeth Boyd Chlebowski, a student

For Shirley Nordyke Latham of Bay City, Texas, the highlight of this year was the graduation of her youngest granddaughter, Karina Clements, from Bay City High School as the “friendliest,” the homecoming queen, and the “most athletic” of her class. She was on the all-district soccer team, and tried out and made the school’s football team — as pointafter kicker! Sue Grosjean Wilcox of Paradise Valley, Arizona, reports that her youngest grandsons, twins, are off to college in Arizona, but for the first time, to two different schools. Her family is well represented in Arizona colleges, with a daughter who is a dean in Arizona State’s college of education, a son-in-law who is a math professor there, and others. She does her part for education by supporting a scholarship to the University of Kansas Medical School in her father’s memory. She also sponsors a college scholarship in Arizona, where her family has provided so many educators. “Everybody’s a teacher!” she says. On a sadder note, Martha Ann Knapp Linden’s husband, Bill, died November 14 at their home in Houston after an illness. He had an extraordinary life. William Mosse Linden, 80, was born in Denison, graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, attended law school at The University of Texas at Austin, then became a star lawyer at Vinson & Elkins LLP in Houston as an oil and gas tax attorney – making partner in four years, eight months, and 18 days, and winning a U.S. Supreme Court case in 1984. He took early retirement to study abroad at Oxford University in England, breaking another record as the oldest person admitted for a postgraduate diploma in theology! And if all that wasn’t enough, he authored and published The Historical Jesus for Beginners, a scholarly quest for understanding the human Jesus in first century Middle East culture, and taught courses on the historical Jesus at Rice University. I (Margot Holt Gill) thought I would be going alone, but Betty Jane Lemmon Hein rallied to join me. Then Fran Parker Chapman showed up in town, stayed with Darleene White DeLee ’49, and made us a group of three. What a delightful surprise to meet up with Toni Andrau Siegler at the Registration Desk! We had a grand and chatter-filled time visiting over lunch, even though being seated at Table #1 meant that we were the oldest reunion class present! Toni had not attended a reunion since our 35th, nor had she sent any news, so there was a lot to catch up on. Some of you will remember her attractive daughter who accompanied Toni 30 years ago. Sadly, she was killed in a car wreck soon after that. Toni lost her husband in the mid ’90s and recently she has moved from their “forever home” in Houston to The Woodlands and is involved in real estate development in Baytown. Fran and Betty Jane never change and just keep on keepin’ on! In addition to Darleene, another ’49-er, Mary Ann Jackson Hyde ’49, was seated with us as well. We enjoyed browsing the very professionally executed Centennial Exhibit in the Memorial Living Room. It contains various pictures of Trent House, Tarry House, Miss Morgan, Miss Trent, Miss Hockaday, and The Cottage, and it triggered many memories that had younger alums giggling as they listened in on our tales. We wish

more of you had been there with us! Now, for the sad items. Since our last Alumnae Magazine, we have received news of three additional losses. A favorite of all, Donna Reese Godwin died on June 8, 2012 from complications following surgery. With six children scattered across the globe, but none in Jackson, we did not hear the news until October. Marilyn Draper Brown mailed some Hockaday-era pictures to Donna and they found their way to a daughter, who contacted Draper, who quickly emailed me. We were able to access the obituary and various pictures of Donna and her enormous family (such a contrast to her life as an only child!) on the Internet, and then communicated with daughter Mary in the Houston area and son Will in Austin. Doug and I saw a good bit of Donna and George through the years and especially appreciated their help when our son Grayson married a Jackson girl 25 years ago. When I sent out my reunion mailing in March, I received not one but two letters from sons telling me of their mom’s death. John Tynes wrote from Crescent City, California, that Margaret McClennahan Tynes had a massive stroke in August 2012, just a few days after her 82nd birthday, lived a couple of days, and died peacefully. She was also a stalwart, popular, fun member of our class. And Ted Duckworth, son of Wally Goedecke Duckworth, responded that Wally had died in March 2012, but did not supply any particulars. Who will ever forget those translucent blue eyes, light blonde hair, and that sweet, ladylike (even at 15!) demeanor of Wally? OK, ladies — double up on the exercise and vitamins! Our ranks are decreasing too fast, so slow it down, please! Other tidbits — I talked to Marylyn Becker Baker in October 2012 and she was recuperating from a painful broken shoulder. She said that Carylyn Becker Lewis was doing fine. Laura Hillhouse Cadwallader was in Dallas for a day in March 2013 to judge Horticulture at the Founders Garden Club Flower Show at the Meadows Museum, so I was able to have a visit with her. 1949 Reunion Class Class Agents – Communications: Darleene White DeLee darleenedelee@gmail.com Mary Ann Hyde mahyde415@gmail.com In May, Fran Parker Chapman joined classmate Darleene White DeLee in Winchester, Virginia, where Darleene placed both DAR patriot’s and Valley Forge soldier’s markers on her great-great-great-grandfather Michael White’s grave. The churchyard ceremony was attended by the local DAR chapter and an SAR color guard in colonial uniforms, as well as members of St. John’s Lutheran Church and area historians. Later, the classmates toured Montpelier, the recently restored home of James and Dolly Madison, before continuing to Fran’s home in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and on to her lakeside cabin. 1952 Class Agent – Communications: Drane Kendall Haw dkhwaco@grandecom.net The Class of ’52 seems to have put all its eggs in one basket: Kay Carter Fortson of Fort Worth. One of our own, Kay was awarded the Hockaday Medal during Alumnae Day festivities in April. According to Chandler Roosevelt Lindsley, no stranger to the prestigious award herself, a crowd of 560 alums cheered Kay on. During her years as a boarder, Kay was a member of the Green Team and president of Entre Nous. She received a B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin

where she was a Pi Beta Phi. Since 1975, Kay has led the Kimbell Art Foundation, which owns and operates the internationally acclaimed Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth. Known for exquisite collections and stunning architectural beauty, the Kimbell is a standout among museums. Kay also serves as a Trustee Emeritus on the TCU Board of Directors, and she is on the Executive Committee of Performing Arts Fort Worth. Kay and Ben Fortson have four children, 11 grandchildren, and one greatgrandchild. I would like to quote from the lovely tribute that her son, Todd, wrote about our Lucia. “She was the epitome of grace and beauty and her signature resilience, eternal optimism, and quiet faith will be greatly missed by all who knew her.” The remaining “Concho Pearls” attended her funeral ... Lisa Meadows Di Leo, Margo Robertson Templeton, Gayle Glass Roche, Nancy Showers Slaughter, and Nita Armstrong Adkins. Margie sent a wonderful floral arrangement from the Class of 1954, which was displayed in a prominent place in the church at the request of her husband, Dick. hoping that Lucia could join us, but for the first time in thirty years, she was unable to do so. While in Dallas, my daughter, Aimee Simms, entertained us at her shop Highgate House for a lovely lunch that she had created and cooked. We all had such fun admiring the many treasures that Aimee and her husband Dudley have acquired for sale in their store. Afterwards we toured the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and saw the fabulous Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. Margie arranged for our delightful tour of the Dallas Arboretum and yummy lunch at their café on the patio the next day. All of this plus the shopping whetted our appetites for our BIG reunion next April ... not only our 60th, but Hockaday’s 100th! This is a definite must-attend affair! This marvelous publication tells the story (through vivid photographs and fascinating text) of the remarkable table decorations, special Christmas trees, and other artful endeavors of Rena Munger Aldredge and includes family history and Dallas history. Speaking of talent, publications, and history — Janet Kleinman Kutner has prepared, expressly for Hockaday’s Centennial Anthology, an extraordinary essay on the history of art at Hockaday (both studio art and art appreciation) across the decades. The Anthology will be

available after August 2013 and will contain writings from 1913 to 2013 by Hockaday students, alumnae, teachers, administrators, and friends. Witty tidbits from Jane Taylor O’Toole and Lanie Amacker Bridges will be included. Originally, it was hoped that the book would have brief bios on each of the contributors, but, alas, there was not enough space in this already weighty tome. Here are some delightful facts about our classmate-contributors, which the readers of the Centennial Anthology will miss (but which many of you already know): Janet was assistant to the director at the Dallas Museum for Contemporary Arts in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and was art critic for the Dallas Morning News from 1970–2006; Jane graduated Connecticut College with a B.A. in English and attended Harvard Business School before working in New York City for True Confessions and for Booz Allen Hamilton (management consultants); Lanie graduated with a double major in music and music education from Oberlin College, where she received the 1999 Alumni Medal (she also holds M.A. degrees in Music Education and Psychology from The University of Texas at Austin and was President of the Board of Directors of the San Angelo Symphony from 1996–1998). What an amazing class we have! Betsy will have a piece of sculpture in Hockaday’s Centennial Art Exhibition (September 27–October 31, 2013), on which Janet is working as a curator (along with Amy Williams Monier ’73). Lanie sent news last winter from San Angelo (although, by the time you read this, she will be in Michigan again): “The ranch is bone dry, and we are selling everything but goats. The oil boom is changing everything ... the grocery store now stocks green things (5 kinds of chilies). Me, I’m waiting for home delivery of the New York Times. I brought 40 books to read while here, and now I’m so forgetful I can start re-reading my library. I sense I’m getting old.” Aren’t we all?! Or, has 75 been the “new 55” for the Class of ’55? An email from Mercer McKee Trapp in Augusta, Georgia, describes a
delightful dinner party celebrating her 75th birthday: “Our daughter, Sutton, and her husband, Scott Turner, and four children (who live only three hours away) were there. Our son, Doug, and partner, Billy, came from NYC. He is an actor and musical theatre performer (great tenor voice) as well as an art director; and he and Billy have a business creating websites and sprucing up those that are dull! We took our family on a week’s cruise in March on a Carnival ship (!) out of Jacksonville, Florida. Nothing went wrong; and we really had fun. My oldest grand (Lauren, 15) said, ‘You know, Mimi, what I like so much is all of us together for dinner at our table.’ We all agreed enthusiastically. My husband, Doug, has Parkinson’s disease. He is a very positive person, and, all in all, we are doing quite well. I recall Hockaday days with affection.” Hockaday Medalist Gracie Hill Gentry spoke at Founder’s Day on April 21. 1956 Class Agent – Communications: Betty Weichsel Compton bwcompton@sbcglobal.net Madeline Utay Podorzer organized the Houston group for lunch and a tour of the Holocaust Museum of Houston in January 2013. Madeline has been a docent at the museum for several years. Attending the lunch and tour were Jean Erwin Schuller, Martha Kyger Guyton, Jerry Johnston Andrew, Nancy Philen Thompson, and Madeline, all from ’56, and Houston resident Phyllis Bywaters Singer ’57. Shannon Harrison Armstrong huddled through the 2013 Denver winter, which brought excessive snow in her opinion. She claims to love snow, although she mentioned that she bundles up in triple layers when venturing out and sleeps cocoon-like under two comforters. Long winters notwithstanding, she has transitioned

Sally Seay Stout, our classmate through ninth grade, passed away in April 2013. She was a special friend of mine and Alice Worsham Bass. well into her life in Denver. A teacher of classical piano to many Austin students through the years, Shannon is now a student herself in a new avenue of creative expression for her, jazz piano. You may remember that she took up the cello when she was in her fifties. Now she has also joined a swim class, just to round things out. Lelya Levy Menscher writes from beautiful Aspen that winter remains her special time because she is still able to ski, which is her lifelong passion, with the help of a “wonderful” knee brace. Lelya practices yoga several times a week to keep limber and muscle-toned, as does Martha Kyger Guyton. Adelaide Biggs is also a passionate skier, spending a lot of time at her home in Crested Butte. She loves to gather her large family at her mountain home. Susan Reynolds Hughes still plays tennis every week and loves it. She even has her original knees! Susan reports that life is good (and safe) in El Paso. She and Dick are glad that they sold their ranch and moved to that border city a number of years ago. Our “catch me if you can” girl, Nancy Philen Thompson, is still traveling with Peter to Guatemala several times a year with Faith in Practice. They also went to Egypt in 2012. Factor in 2012 visits with their son and family in Massachusetts, their daughter and family in the San Francisco area, skiing at Lake Tahoe
and sunning in Key West, and you have a couple living life to the fullest. Madeline Utay Podorzer and Bill also travel about and are enjoying their lives. They went to London for a cousin’s Bat Mitzvah in March 2012, and then traveled around the English countryside. From there, they flew to Lisbon for several days. Louise Phinney Caldwell and Joe celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2012 with trips to New York, Shelter Island, and Greenwich, Connecticut, where their only grandchildren live. They have three granddaughters, including twin girls. This is in keeping with the family tradition of twins, as Louise and Joe have twin sons. They also celebrated Joe’s 80th birthday in 2012. Joe continues to work as a hospice chaplain and a psychiatric social worker. Louise is a Life Trustee of the Dallas Historical Society, serving as an advisor to the society’s Awards for Excellence, which honors outstanding Dallas volunteers. Numerous Hockaday graduates have been recipients of this award. Nancy Murrell Neuhoff took an exciting trip to Italy in April 2013 as part of a small group who received an audience at the Vatican with Pope Francis very soon after his election. Nancy’s two daughters, Helen Neuhoff Butler ’79 and Linda Neuhoff ’81 (now known as Mother Elizabeth Marie, head of her Order), accompanied her, as did
Class Agent – Communications: Myrtie Rawlins Rice myrtierice@sbcglobal.net As many of you already know, we are coming into our 100th Anniversary of The Hockaday School. Several of us were boarders during the mid ’50s, and this is a bit of Sallie McCutcheon’s memory of why she preferred boarding over driving 50 miles both ways to school outside of Pecos, Texas. Boarding had its good times; she was already here at school ready to roll each day. Some of us came even further: Myrtie from Inca, Peru, a 21-hour flight to the States. She was wary, as this was her first school with other girls. Things had been good in Peru for she had her own maid, sweet Maria, who would fix her lemonade at a whim. Myrtie was in bed reading one night and she was getting sleepy so naturally she yelled for Maria. She yelled again. Maria did not show, but her father did. He stood at the door and said, “Why are you calling for Maria? She is serving dinner to our guests. She is busy.” After a short silence, Myrtie said, “I wanted Maria to turn off my light.” Her parents sent off for information about Hockaday the next day. The rest is history. Back to today. Caro Alexander Stalcup continues to spoil her family by taking Irene Stalcup Forero ’85, Leonardo, and six-year-old Emelia to New York. Guess who was thrilled with the Statue of Liberty, the play Cinderella, and

the Eloise tea at the Plaza? A few mementos were found in her suitcase. Barkley Adams Rice took the idea from Caro and took her entire family to Annapolis for the military services for her deceased husband, Robert Rice. The entire weekend was most special and will be long remembered by all. Marietta Scurry Johnson invited herself along so she could visit her grandson, William. He was part of the ceremony for Robert, a thoughtful invitation by Barkley. Oteka Little Ball and her daughter Oteka Lyn Ball Bernard ’85 entered a mother and daughter writing contest in Oklahoma. The title of the entry was The Bra: To Wear or Not to Wear. These two won! This contest was inspired by the book, The Joy Luck Club. Only in Oklahoma! Some bad news: Linda Ashby Crites was in a one-car accident. She was terribly hurt and had surgery on her ankle and injured her sciatic nerve, leaving her immobilized. 1958 Class Agent – Communications: Nancy Greene hockaday58@gmail.com An additional credit to Harriet Schock’s new acting career was that she played the female lead in Borrowed Glory on February 16, 2013. She wrote the music for Borrowed Glory as well, and sang the songs that she had written for it during the performance. It is an old-time radio show-type reading. The performance was at the Golden Age Theater in Hollywood. She also performed Borrowed Glory in Florida last year. Penny Taylor Rembe and her family have been involved with the preservation of Los Poblanos for almost 30 years and finally have their own house on the property. Los Poblanos is a 22-room Historic Inn, a store, and a restaurant in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In addition, they have a lavender business, bee keeping, and an organic

farm. Luckily, their son, Matt, came back from New York City and he has taken over the helm. All the kids are involved in the business, as well as some of the grandchildren. Three of the kids live within two miles, so Penny gets a chance to go to soccer games and music recitals. She has a pantry full of Girl Scout cookies. Suzanne Barbee Crawford sends her fondest greetings. She spent some time in Beaumont last April during our reunion time and regretted not being able to attend the reunion. Marilyn Munger Watson has a new place in South Texas, outside of Harlingen. When she isn’t square dancing, she travels around the country researching quilt barns. She was able to find 350 of them in just the last year. There are tens of thousands of them. She gives talks on quilt barns as she travels. In March, she also attended a “pie camp” in Seattle, Washington. Marilyn reports that Joan Watzek Hargadon has now re-married. Carol Koch Allen vacationed on a riverboat in Holland in April. In June, she took a cruise from Rome to Barcelona. In July, she plans to go to the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu. In October, she will be in Vietnam. When she is home, she is busy with grandchildren and lunching with friends. She saw Merl Meadors Glasscock last March. She says, “Life is good.” Carol Craig Cowan-Lanyon is busy traveling

across the country with book-signings now. The book includes quite a bit about Hockaday and later reunions with classmates in Europe in 1960–1961. Margaret Anne Cullum was in New York with the art museum docents in April. She is still doing the two things she loves most: being an art museum docent and traveling. She has been a docent at the Dallas Museum of Art for 20 years and at the Nasher Sculpture Center for 10 years. She says, “These are the best unpaid jobs you can have.” This year she has traveled twice to New York. She also traveled to France, London, and Istanbul. Her grandmother always said that the secret to getting older is to “make younger friends.” Lynda Byrd Sharrett sends her greetings to the Class of 1958. She regrets, “I cannot come (to the reunion), but I know you all will have a great time! I do have many fond memories of my time at Hockaday.” Mary Jane LeVan

Armacost has changed her residence as of January 1 to her home in Sun Valley, Idaho. They are enjoying the more relaxed lifestyle and come back to the Bay Area on a regular basis when her husband has board meetings. Nancy Greene (me) is happy living in Emory. I spend a lot of time in Dallas shopping, running errands, and visiting friends. I also dine with several different dinner groups. I’m still a member of Dallas County Master Gardeners and am a gardening volunteer at the Juliet Fowler Nursing Facility. We assist elderly gardeners in their gardening projects. I have met some really wonderful people here in Emory. One of them has had such a fascinating life that I (and another writer friend) am turning it into a screenplay. I will then try to get it funded and direct it. I’ve done that before, so I hope to do it again. It takes place 1942–1947 during WWII in the Netherlands, 50 miles from the German border. The story is from the (boy) child’s point of view and includes the harboring of a young German couple for four years in the family barn, which is part of the house. What occurs is breathtaking! We must all be very busy, off on trips around the world or something, because this sets a record for the least amount of news I’ve ever received! Linda Leslie writes that she has spent the last two years helping her sister, who recently died. Linda is looking forward to one of the Centennial celebrations and sent an interesting historical note: “Do you remember the sign at the old school on Greenville Avenue? It had two dates on it: 1913, which was not only the founding year but my mother’s

Mother and I felt a special connection to Hockaday through the sign, and geographically as Miss Hockaday was from Fannin County where we lived.” Sandy Smith Laughlin and Gary take part in a golf tournament called the MacKenzie Cup. Twenty-eight members of their club, the Cypress Point Club, go somewhere every other year to play an Alister MacKenzie course, and this November they gathered at the Jockey Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Jim and Nancy Hoak, whose daughters attended Hockaday, were also on the trip. Kay Stanley Thrasher writes that her oldest grandson, Kyle, got married in May and will be deployed overseas soon. We congratulate Kyle and wish him the best. The Dallas/Fort Worth group who gathered at the Kimbell Museum last spring enjoyed another outing together in October, this time to the Dallas Arboretum to see the Chihuly exhibit which was breathtaking! Marcia Fuller French, Betty Reagor Murray, Shelby Schafer, Susie McCrum Marshall, Nancy Kaplan Lubar, Ellen Higginbotham Rogers, Julie Boren Patrick, and I (Allie Stemmons Simon) enjoyed a perfect Texas fall day in the gardens and a quick refreshment stop at my house afterwards. distressed our friends who live in the north. Both Sue Schaenan Gould in Philadelphia and Anne McCord Miller in New Jersey were without power for almost a week. Ellen Kleinman Banner, who lives in the middle of Manhattan, amazingly never lost her power, but her daughter and family who live in Greenwich Village did, so they moved right in with Ellen. Alison Taylor in Washington, D.C. survived her power loss by staying with a friend but worried about her cottage surrounded by tall trees, which threatened to topple in the storm — mercifully none did. I’m sure we have many more classmates in the area who were affected. Anne McCord Miller’s husband, Dick, died shortly before Christmas after a long illness, with Anne as his faithful caregiver. We send Anne our sincere sympathy. Sydney Reid-Hedge and Joel are in the middle of a major home renovation and are thankful they still have her mother’s home to camp out in during the construction. Nancy Fix Anderson was in Dallas December 23–24 to attend the Cowboys/Saints game as Sallie Bell Jackson Loop’s guest (Nancy lived so long in New Orleans, she can’t give up the Saints!). We had a Christmas Eve luncheon at my house, which was a lot of fun. In the spring Nancy visited the Iberian Peninsula, first walking seven days on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela,

reliving the trip she and Cliff had made two years ago and spreading his ashes along the way, then a ten-day tour of Portugal. Suzanne Hickey Bryant recently sent news that she and Gary have purchased a third ranch in the Bartonville/Argyle (Texas) area and this one they have turned into an Animal Rescue, BNoble Farms Rescue. At the moment they are caring for 13 horses including a newborn filly, three donkeys, two rabbits, two ducks, seven dogs, and six cats. By the time you read this, the Centennial Celebration year for Hockaday will be in full swing! The finale will be the Alumnae Centennial Weekend, Friday and Saturday, April 11–12, 2014, which coincides with our 55th Reunion year. We will have a special class reunion dinner on Thursday, April 10, to complement the other Centennial festivities, so mark the dates now and make plans to attend. Jane Stamper Godlove and husband, Ernest, took their grandchildren to Williamsburg in May, and then the two of them spent three weeks on a road trip through Germany. Congratulations to Caroline Giles Banks, whose book, The Weight of Whiteness, A Memoir in Poetry, is available at Amazon.com. Her grandchildren are keeping her very busy. Tyler (15) plays lacrosse and Madison (13) earned her black belt in Taekwondo. She also served as a delegate to the Model United Nations in Minneapolis. Kay Fowler Kelton and husband, Phil, traveled to the Badlands in North Dakota. Linda Jones Rayes and husband, Pat, have recently bought a house in Santa Fe and will be spending much of their time there, when not traveling the globe. Other classmates in Santa Fe, part-time or full-time, are Suzanne Simmons Bartolucci, Judy Kadane Nix, Peggy Lubben Gould, and Becky Beasley. They are just a few of the many Daisies in and around Santa Fe. Galen Murray Bauchman and husband, Rick, spend about six months out of the year in Montana. Galen has two granddaughters, one at SMU and one at the Episcopal School of Dallas. Ann Addyman Lawrence and her daughter, Dana Lawrence
’90, did a driving trip in Portugal last summer. They have really had some wonderful trips together. Judy Kadane Nix retired, once again, and is currently taking a Shakespeare class. She will soon begin a training program to become a docent at the beautiful New Mexico History Museum and plans to get back into the fine art aspect of photography again. She and Mary Ellen did a river cruise in China last July and plan another cruise from Santiago to Buenos Aires in February. Beth Anthony Lightbown had one knee replaced the month after our 50th Reunion and the other knee will be completed by the time you read this. Becky Beasley continues to spend as much time as she can with her three grandsons – Will (7 ½), Connor (6 ½), and Knox (2). When they are in Santa Fe in the summer, they all hike with Suzanne Simmons Bartolucci and her grandchildren, Luca (6) and Siena (5). Peggy Grinnan Allen writes that she and husband, Peter, have been to Maui five times this year where Peter, a geologist and hydrologist, is working under the auspices of the U.S. Navy on the last sugarcane plantation on the island, hoping to make biofuel out of sugarcane. Their daughter, Maggie Allen ’01, was married in September 2012 to Jay Wolgram at her great-grandmother’s house on the banks of the Chester River in the

historic town of Chestertown on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. They now reside in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where Jay is in business school and Maggie is a pediatric nurse practitioner. Daughter Annabel is in business school in Denver, and daughter Sarah Bloom is the busy mother of Dulany (10) and Oliver (8) and is working as an interior designer in Dallas. The Class of ’61 is scheduled to have a 70th birthday party in April, thanks to Linda Jones Rayes and Peggy Grinnan Allen. Anne Jordan Logan and a dedicated committee worked for months contacting class members and planning activities for our 50th Reunion. Classmates from seven states and two countries joined to share memories and renew
friendships. Texas alumnae greeted Diane “Dinker” Gast Aven, Cammy Ritchey, Dale Ness Eggers, and Carol Friedman Dressler (California); Debby Barnes Borg and Marlene Mirkes Johnsen (New Jersey); Ann Bateson and Ginny Elkin Fuller (Colorado); Candy Good Jacobson and Dorothy Paine Duff (New Mexico); Anne “Roonie” Franklin Beach (North Carolina); Suanne Miller Horton (Oklahoma); and Suzanne Raborn Burns (Canada). At Friday’s luncheon each of us received a keepsake from Dorothy Paine Duff and Susie Weber Munson, a glass paperweight inscribed “1963 Hockaday 2013.” Later, Class of 1963 members met their Class of 2022 “Pen Pals” in Great Hall. Brilliant idea, exchanging letters with today’s fourth graders and sharing our experiences at Hockaday 50 years earlier. Friday evening was spent at Anne Logan’s gracious home. Co-hostess Candy Jacobson provided the delicious dinner. Spotted having

A highlight was viewing an amazing DVD Jody Williams Hagler created. Saturday’s Alumnae Boarder Reunion Breakfast was a hit. Kenny Dixon Pickens writes: “[We] were entertained with a Boarder Reunion Breakfast on Saturday morning and then taken to see our original 50-year-old dorm rooms, which are soon to be remodeled for the first time in 50 years! Most fun of the weekend was running into my old boarder friends: Candy, Linda, Lynne, Electra, Roonie, Dinker, and more.” Dinker and Candy agreed: “The entire weekend was ‘the best’ ... Candy and I chuckled about [the fact] we were roommates for three years at Hockaday and found ourselves picking right up where we left off being roomies again 50 years later. It was such fun having Suzanne Burns join us, with so many thanks to Anne Logan for her hospitality!” Dale Eggers and Ann Bateson visited Mary Jane Ehricht Fally at her lovely home near White Rock Lake. Later they joined others for a joint Hockaday and St. Mark’s cocktail party. Saturday evening, Tom and Linda Deal Barrow opened their gorgeous home for great food, drink, and camaraderie. Mayhew Dealey, Vicki Vanston Rothschild, and I (Angier Peavy) met up on Thursday. Jan was just awarded a huge case and was already planning legal strategies. Lynn reported that her daughter is great with twin boys, whose birth will give her an entire basketball team. Kay filled us in on the travails of the Boeing Dream Liner and the perks of seniority in United/ Continental, and Vicki showed pictures and bragged on her grandson Charley. Friday at the “Mother Ship” was a hoot. There was an exhibit of the graduation dresses for the various classes. Ours was not quite the tackiest, but it was right up there with the one with the unfortunate peplum. Our class picture will, no doubt, be stunning. Swanee Hunt sent in an aged Hockaday banner to take her place. Picture taken, we were heading out when Bitsy Jennings showed up. Be sure to mentally Photoshop her into the picture. At the Alumnae Day Luncheon we kept busy table-hopping and chatting. Jackie Miller Stewart took time off from her daughter’s wedding day to come. Now that is loyalty! At the end of the program, including speeches, awards presentations, and a choir of winsome infants, the Class of 1968 did a heartfelt if shaky rendition of the school song. Each of us remembered some of the words, so we got it completely done. There was a fine exhibit on Miss Ela and the First One Hundred Years, and we peeked at the soon-to-be re-done boarding department. Evening event was dinner at the Arboretum Camp House, courtesy of the ever-efficient and convincing Molly Livingston Hobson. Mickey McNamara, Linda Majors Kassenbaum, and Shirley Steere made appearances after lo these many decades of absence. Peggy Wagner Zadina took time off from decorating Dallas to come, and Nancy Halbreich put her fund-raising efforts aside to visit. Bitsy Jennings came with her gentleman friend, and looked and sounded happy with her life and studies. Saturday featured a trunk show at Vicki Michaelis Bartholow’s house. Jenny Inge and Vicki showed their wares, and then we all segued to
Susie Strauss Breen’s abode for a last supper. Over the course of the weekend, and in no particular order, bits and pieces from attendees: Jennifer Josey McPherson makes jelly from her own trees and is selling it. She is thoroughly enjoying her life and visiting kids around the country. Beverly Hill Scott left early and got back to Austin just in time to take her daughter-in-law to the hospital. Her son also cut his trip short and got back for the birth of his son Liam. Lainey Luckadoo Abbott is still beading and visiting far-flung kids. Susan Tobian Palmer is a middle school principal. Her daughter is working on The Hill and enjoying it immensely. Ann Lawrence Wessel is, as always, delighted with her life and her brilliant daughters, one of whom showed up for the trunk show for a bauble to wear to her upcoming interview at L’Institut Pasteur in Paris. Gayle Anderson Bicik is looking forward to retiring and kicking back with her husband. Sounds like a great plan. Linda Julian Richie’s husband regaled us all with tales from political ad land and immediately designed a campaign for a hypothetical congressional run. Jenny Inge is celebrating 40 years of the Rare Things Gallery. If you are in Creede, Colorado, drop in. She has in mind a year-long celebration to rival that of Hockaday. Jenny, by the way, has learned a new skill – catching trout with her teeth. Cathy Orr Luccock is molding the minds of the youth of America and coming up with wonderful ways to get kids to read and

enjoy it. Tricia Wilson’s two sons are both graduates of the Naval Academy, as is one of her daughters-in-law. Kathy McAdams Howard is one of the heads of Collin County Child Protective Services. She has a very challenging and difficult job, but loves what she does. She and her husband John will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this summer. Laurel Ornish freelances with media outlets and was the only one of us sufficiently organized to take, edit, and post pictures of the reunion. Nancy Leake Abelanet is an active member of Artreach Dallas. Susie Strauss Breen is president of the board of directors of Artreach Dallas and has done a superb job in that capacity. Other Hockadaisies on the board are Vicki Michaelis Bartholow, Linda Julian Richie, and Kaleta Doolin ’69. A veritable Hockaday mafia! Vicki Bartholow is taking metalsmith classes, which she reports is practically impossible. She also serves on a number of non-profit boards in Dallas. She is already planning and thinking ahead to our 50th in five years, so everyone mark their calendars now. There will be no excuses, and we plan to set records! Susan Lively sent a note that she would have preferred to hang with the gals instead of languishing in chilly Moscow. Frances Aronson was in Wilmington/Newark, Delaware, working on a new show. She will be lighting a concert version of Song of Norway at Carnegie Hall. Cathy Castleman Greene was unable to come because of her obligations to medical support for Haiti, competition
in the Senior Olympics, and keeping up with a dizzying array of children and grandchildren. Maria Carolina Rozas, Pam Pitzer Willeford, and Debbie Kusin-Kline all sent their regrets for not attending and promise to mark the 50th Reunion on their calendars. We laughed and talked, shared stories of parents, kids, grandkids, and pets; described past and upcoming travel; compared notes on legal, medical, and architectural travails; and went a long way toward solving all of the problems of the world. Lainey Luckadoo Abbott rode out Superstorm Sandy and only lost electricity for several days. She reports that her son John and his wife Jennifer had a beautiful little girl, Hannah Charlotte Abbott, April 17, 2012. As John was deployed with the Navy in a secret location somewhere off the coast of Africa, they were only able to take Hannah and her mother with them this September on a trip to Sydney, Australia, for a pediatric neurosurgical meeting and to visit with other son Richmond, his wife Tenille, and their daughter Skyla. They live on the Gold Coast of Australia. The Abbot clan celebrated Skyla’s second birthday and the inclusion of a piece of Lainey’s jewelry in the latest Lark book, Showcase 500 Beaded Jewelry: Photographs of Beautiful Contemporary Beadwork (500 series), available at Amazon.com. and am trying to tame the landscape and have a garden around the house, which was completed in 2011. Wild blackberry vines pop up everywhere. My activities during 2012–2013 have been curtailed somewhat as I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2012 and have had a double mastectomy followed by a year of chemotherapy, ending this August. I am eagerly awaiting the return of my hair and greater energy, but all things considered, I am feeling pretty well. If any of you should be out this way, I would love to see you. Anabel Herrerías has been living in Antigua, Guatemala, since 2007, enjoying the beautiful springtime weather and the gorgeous view of volcanoes and blue skies. On May 18, she will present her book of 24 essays in Spanish, English, and French entitled Private Collection. It is a compendium of thoughts on recommended reading, from the 17th century Spanish poet Luis de Góngora to C.S. Lewis, Joseph Conrad, Harold Bloom, and many contemporary Guatemalan authors. The cover and some chapters are illustrated by her sister, Carmen Herrerías Mileti ’67. Her oldest son, Alejandro, will be moving back from USC to teach Industrial Engineering at Georgia Tech. Her second son, José Antonio, is running the family milling business. Her youngest son, Carlos Rafael, is working with his father in the steel roofing business. Barb Bennett has had a couple of very busy and trying years. Barb’s mother passed away last March, and her funeral in Dallas was on the same day that Barb’s youngest got married in Australia. Life is full of challenging decisions. Barb wrote: “I opted to attend to my mother and to share the time with my sister. I have just quit my job as a family violence counselor that I have had for the last six years. Gomberg writes that she is teaching primary school in a village south of her home in Wolverhampton, England, with her husband Martin. Kathy has four very accomplished offspring: Anna, an Oxford graduate, is married and living in Berkeley, California, where she teaches at a prep school; Peter is a banker in Wolverhampton; Stephen will be getting married in August and is a music producer based in Berlin; and Simon is in the midst of his medical studies at Oxford. Most of Kathy’s family is based in the San Francisco Bay area, so she rarely makes it back to Texas. Teri Tynes moved to New York after 18 years of teaching. She works as the Web Content Strategist for the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, and has an award-winning blog as a sideline. Hello Hockadaisies! I (Julia Willie Klein) am still in Ouray, Colorado, and I thought I would lay back and enjoy my free time after closing the B&B. Oh no, I have been busier than I have ever been. I went back to school at age 50 and have been taking various classes. I am currently preparing to get my Colorado real estate license. I am planning my daughter Heather’s wedding for October in California, and planning two events for some non-profits for June and July. I have started a Boomers Meet-up here for active people that want to have fun! Life can be a bit boring in a small town if you don’t utilize all that the area has to offer. I have a compassion for people that seem lonely and bored. I guess you could call me an “anti boredom agent.” There is indeed so much to do. I have become an advocate for adult education, since I enjoy taking classes. I should have my Ph.D. by now, but that’s OK. I am enjoying life anyway. I run the plumbing and heating department of my husband’s business, so I guess I do have my Ph.D.! I miss Dallas very much and would like to move back to Texas one day (at least for part of the year). Shoveling snow is getting to me, but I do love cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. My son Brandon is still in Aspen and has a small company called Ajax Labs. He is a software developer and has worked on ski patrol for a few years. It is so awesome to have the technology we have today so we can all keep up with each other.

Jill has just started working on the 2014 China–U.S. Relations Conference, the sixth in the series of conferences sponsored by Texas A&M reinforcing the vision of President George H.W. Bush’s legacy of collaboration between China and the U.S. The conference will focus on the role of the two countries in preventing, preparing for, and responding to emerging infectious diseases and pandemics. Jill and Brett spend their free time attending as many Aggie sporting events as they can. In addition to her new job as Compliance Reporting Manager at Parkland Health & Hospital System, Pamela Rundell has received her CHC designation, which is Certified in Healthcare Compliance. Her son, Reiny, is off to DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, in Fall 2013 so she will be an empty nester! I’m alive and crazy in Round Rock with my long-suffering husband Russell Strahan and our younger daughter Christine (15). Lauren (20) is off at Texas A&M studying to be a nurse. (At least, that’s what she tells us.) We run a small engineering firm out of the office in our back yard. The 2.5 acres of said yard, which we share with two cats and a Vizsla puppy, keep us pretty busy. If you’re in Central Texas and need structural or drainage engineering, we might be able to help you. They were joined by Maria McKinney Dau, Grace Dau ’13, and Katherine Dau (Form III); Sara Mosle and Johanna Mosle; and Ann Whitley Wood and Genny Wood (eighth grade), and Jenna Brasch Woodberry brought her daughter and my niece Margaret Woodberry (sixth grade). We all loved the show! Last summer, Nancy Purse Winston and Ann Whitley Wood popped to Paris together for Bastille Day, where they celebrated at the chic Brasserie Lipp and, of course, did some serious shopping. Serena Young’s oldest daughter, Emma Young ’10, will be a senior at Carnegie Mellon next fall. Her younger daughter Sophie, who is 19 and has special needs, is in the Bridges Program at the Notre Dame School in Dallas. Serena works as Director of Arts Programs at the O’Donnell Foundation. Just as she entertained us at Hockaday, Leslie Hyland Rodgers has been busy running her music-based charity Symphony of Soul, recording two CDs, and also acting. Her most recent role was a speaking part on The Lying Game for ABC Family. Cuqui Chiriboga traveled from her home in Ecuador to visit New York City. She had a nice catch-up dinner with Sara Mosle and Rachel Cobb. I (Sarah Woodberry) joined Jenna Woodberry, my brother Seth, and their four younger kids on a trip to London over Thanksgiving to visit big sister Haley Woodberry ’12, who is doing a post-graduate year at Uppingham School in Rutland. Here is a bit of news: Meredith Brown recently married Steve Boyd. Marcella Butler has moved from New York to Fort Worth, started a new job, and bought a new home. Kim Banks Cody and husband Tom welcomed home Lucas Arthur Cody in June. He joins big brother Andrew Banks Cody who is two. They have moved to Monterrey Park, California, and are settling in very happily. Robin Carder missed many of the reunion events because she hosts an annual weekend camp for children with dermatological issues. Elizabeth Spencer Owens is busy with her interior design business, and is launching a new business with a friend to offer a “dorm room in a box” of linens, furniture, and decorative accessories geared to college-bound kids. Jan Ablon Maher was sorry to miss the reunion; she was moving her older daughter Heather into an apartment in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where she will be working toward her MBA at Oklahoma State University. She graduated from Texas State University with a degree in international business and a minor in Japanese this past May. She joins her sister, Shannon, who is finishing her first year at Oklahoma State, majoring in aerospace and mechanical engineering with a minor in math. Shannon works on the Formula SAE Team at school and will be competing with her team against other colleges in Detroit in June; she will then study in France during the 2013 summer. Jan became a Certified Associate in Project Management and is working toward her MBA. She continues to work for VHA in Las Colinas, Texas, as a Lawson System Administrator, and lives in Plano with two dogs and six rescue cats in what is now an empty and quiet house. For fun, Jan and her daughters participate in high performance driving events at Texas and Oklahoma race tracks. Shannon and Jan drive Mustangs, while Heather drives a Camaro. Here is some of the latest news for the Class of 1985. Natalie Spencer Lorio has been to New York City on a mother/daughter trip to celebrate her daughter’s 12th birthday. This is a family tradition she does with all of them. Mary Kate O’Toole Mellow came in town to meet them and to see the sights. They had a fantastic time. You name it, they did it. Natalie and her family have started working on a house around the corner from where they currently live in Dallas, and it sounds like Natalie has her hands full. After almost six years with Mike’s Hard Lemonade in Seattle, Jennifer Hirschfeld moved back to Dallas in June in order to be closer to friends and family. She’s not sure what her

next role will be, but she is looking forward to exploring new opportunities. In the meantime, she has been enjoying the blue skies and Texas sunshine, both of which were sorely missed in Seattle. After years of cramming in a few days over Christmas in either Dallas or Denver, she has also been putting this rare “downtime” to good use, spending several weeks in Tuscany with the extended family and taking road trips to Denver with her sister and her kids. She has also had the opportunity to catch up with some of our classmates, including Judy Tsao Tse. (Judy flew in from Hong Kong in August with her husband Ray to visit their son Justin, a sophomore at SMU.) She would love to reconnect with everyone! Melinda Bell Nugent’s oldest son, Caton, is a freshman at Baylor and loving it. She can’t believe he’s in college! Connor is a freshman at HPHS and Chloe is in second grade at Bradfield, so she is running from school to school. Melinda is also a realtor with Ebby Halliday. She had lunch recently with Natalie Lorio for her birthday and caught up with Wendy Kumpf (her son Richard is a freshman at Ole Miss), Susan Maclay Rote, and Brett Cohen Levy. Melinda reports that Brett’s fabulous new home is finished, and she has a party almost every week! Laura Belknap Calley is now an adjunct professor of English for the McKinney campus of Collin College. She is teaching composition on campus and as a dual credit class at two nearby high schools. She loves it. She also is the committee chair and den leader for her son Ralph’s Cub Scout pack. Mattie Caldwell Roberts is still living in New York City. She continues the search for a cure for cellulite and will report back as soon as she can via her YouTube channel (mattierobertsshow). Last December, she married Eric Whitney and realized that being a stepmother has all of the benefits and none of the stress of traditional parenthood. Claire Hughes Lynch had quite the summer! Her family traveled to Dublin, Ireland, where she presented at Trinity College on inclusive education. They spent a week touring Ireland and

tracking down her husband’s family who came over during the Famine. They thought it was so much fun hanging out on the Cliffs of Moher and Tara, and learning Irish songs and stories! They then went from the damp Emerald Isle and came back to the desert, as they visited Mesa Verde and visited her mother in Santa Fe. Their home in Georgia feels very warm and very humid after their far-flung summer! She is still an associate professor of special education at the College of Coastal Georgia, and this year she is Faculty Senate President and is preparing to go through the tenure review process — so it’s a busy year. Add to that her daughter competing in cheerleading competitions and her son competing in Taekwondo. Catherine Walsh, daughter of Elizabeth Clark Walsh, granddaughter of Sara Alexander Clark ’59, and niece of Catherine Clark Chiao ’86, performed three principal roles in Hilton Head Dance Theatre’s upcoming production of The Nutcracker. She will be dancing the Tiramisu solo, and the Snow Queen and Arabian Coffee pas de deux with guest artist Matthew Prescott, formerly of the Joffrey Ballet and most recently of Billy Elliott in Miami. She will perform with the corps du ballet in the Waltz of the Flowers. Vivian Pflanzer Brown and husband Eric welcomed their first child. Evan Brown was born September 10, 2012 and was 8 lbs, 4 oz. news from Europe. She moved to Paris last summer and changed her life 100%. She lives there with her boyfriend Franck on a huge domain with 100 horses. Her kids are still in Switzerland with their Dad to finish their studies, but often come to visit. She is enjoying her new home and trying to find her way in France. She recently started working for the Haras de la Cense (www.lacense.com) in the public relations department. Besides this, she trains her horses every day for dressage competitions. Sharon Weed Cocco welcomed a new baby to the family this year! Reece Boyd Armstrong-Clossey was born to Sarah Clossey and Mark Armstrong on June 13, 2012. Katya Jestin took her three kids, Samuel (9), Madeleine, and James (5) to D.C. They are also grandchildren of Susan Mead ’66. They were very excited to see the stone upon which Martin Luther King, Jr. stood in delivering his famous speech at the Lincoln Memorial. Sally Darden Hudspeth is starting her daughter, Megan, at Hockaday this year in Form I, where she will be joining Sarah Held (Form I, Ariana Viroslav Held’s daughter) and Elinor Sachs (Form I, LeDee Kidd Sachs’ daughter). Kelly McClennahan Barnett’s big news is that she and her family moved back to Austin from Seoul this summer. They were there for three years. Estee Marsh Kellogg’s daughter C.C. (22) is graduating from Princeton in June, son Coley (20) is completing his sophomore year at The University of Texas at Austin where he is in the

Liberal Arts Honors Program, and Tom (15) is finishing his freshman year of high school at Saint Mary’s Hall. She and her husband, Luke, love San Antonio and are celebrating their 24th wedding anniversary this summer. Kristin Brown Flynn is looking forward to summer getting here so she can be on the lake every day. Her kids are quickly growing up — way too fast. Her daughter Erin is a sophomore and son Jake is a junior already looking at colleges. He wants to be a civil engineer and is looking at Georgia Tech. Erin is still jumping horses and has been training a green horse for the last year. I have been busy playing “where in the world is Kathy Gersch,” traveling for work to Asia, Europe, Latin America, and across the U.S. You can follow my adventures on Facebook. She is also continuing her musical endeavors, playing some jazz violin. Meg Allen Temple’s daughter, Mia Temple (kindergarten), started pre-kindergarten at Hockaday last fall and scored her first goal playing soccer with Mandy Ginsberg’s daughter, Maya Ginsberg (kindergarten). Meg is bravely coaching their team, appropriately named the Crazy Daisies! Kimberly Haley-Coleman writes that her daughters, Maggie and Haley, named their Labrador puppy Daisy, and she spent an eventful month of stares after vegetable-based fur dye (in honor of breast cancer awareness) just wouldn’t wash off. Maggie is currently a Daisy scout who will find a way to work “daisy” into any conversation ... vive les Daisies! I received an update from Rachael Leventhal-Garnett whose oldest son, Micah (13), is in seventh grade at Fort Worth Country Day and is having a fabulous year. He won the first place award within the Tarrant County private school’s cross country runners this fall and was just placed on the A-team as the center forward in soccer. She is homeschooling her younger son Gabriel (11) this year in order to allow extra time to focus on his sport, competitive fencing. Up until the summer of 2011, she had been teaching art to pre-kindergarten and fourth through

eighth grade students at a small Catholic school in Fort Worth. Recently, though, she ventured to become her own boss and last spring started an estate sales business, Garnett Estate Sales and Dry Goods (Dry Goods referring to her growing online business and hopefully, a storefront one day). She states it is great fun and a tremendous amount of hard work. Julie McArthur and Shana Intille Wilcox both started volunteer teaching English as a Second Language to adults at the West Dallas campus of VMLC (Vickery Meadow Learning Center) this spring. Nice work, ladies. In other more recent news, our reunion was a huge success! I believe there were more than 44 Daisies in attendance. Meg Temple threw a fabulous cocktail party at her home in Dallas, and we met up later with the St. Mark’s Class of 1988 to reminisce. Meg is heading up the Hockaday Annual Fund for our class and urges everyone to give, shooting for 100% participation. Way to go, Meg ... let’s support her! Even if it is a gift of $5, it will help us beat the St. Mark’s boys and we always want to beat them! Personally, I (Nicki Allen) had a wonderful time seeing everyone again although it was a bit surreal being on campus again and feeling a bit lost with all of the new buildings that have been added. She has been single for three and a half years and is beginning her fourth year of teaching high school English. Her children William (15), Lawrence (12), and Olivia (7) attend All Saint’s Episcopal School in Tyler. They are truly joys in her life and keep her feet running. She still dances and is a certified Zumba instructor, has taken up cardio kickboxing, and is currently training for a marathon. She has been known to work out at 5:15 a.m. and then again in the evenings, and loves the challenge. Recently Joanna chaired the Silent Auction for the Women’s Symphony League, and she is currently Chair of Gaming/ Casino of the Cattle Baron’s Gala for the American Cancer Society. Joanna is very excited for our next reunion in 2014. Jennifer Holdbrooks Hodge is now working for two Medicare quality improvement organizations in Georgia and Colorado, working on projects to reduce hospital

readmissions among Medicare beneficiaries in 12 southeastern states. She also is speaking nationally on the topic in cool places like Arkansas. Jennifer did get to speak at a huge healthcare quality conference in San Antonio in June 2013. Her kids are in second and third grade, and are involved in soccer and Little League. The family lost their nine-year-old Lab tragically last summer and they are now trying to figure out what type of dog to get. Jennifer spent time with Kristal Snelson in San Antonio. Jennifer reports that Kristal is working in oil title law as an attorney in San Antonio. Rogers Hartmann has a film shooting outside of Mumbai, India, which includes Donald Sutherland in the cast. She cannot believe her nephew just got his driver’s license, and she remembers the day he was born in Santa Monica, California, like it was yesterday. Finally, she is so excited to be the maid of honor in her sister Kate’s wedding. Kathleen Johnson Self is the children’s ministry coordinator at her church in Portland, Oregon. She also recently traveled to Rwanda with her husband to visit their sponsored children through Africa New Life, an organization that is building schools in areas that were devastated by the genocide of the 1990s. weekend at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to celebrate her 20-year reunion. One of the highlights was getting into the freshman dorms to see her old room, which remarkably appeared to be exactly the same, even the same furniture! She loved showing her children (twins Andrew and Caroline, 9, and Benjamin, 5) her old stomping grounds. They also spent time at the U.S. Naval Academy so her husband Jason could show them around his campus, which the kids noted was “much more fancy,” and they showed them the place where they first met back in 1992. Kimberly is a partner at Baker and McKenzie LLP, where she has worked for 14 years, and she handles a diverse docket of commercial litigation, class actions, and intellectual property litigation, and continues to be heavily involved in recruiting. Kimberly also chases after her munchkins and takes them to every conceivable sporting event, as well as choir, piano, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and a seemingly endless supply of other fun adventures. Her family enjoys amazing travels in the great outdoors, recently taking in Lake Tahoe, camping in Yosemite National Park, and hiking in Sequoia National Park. They are also always up for some relaxing time at the beach, and rekindled their annual Fahrenbrook family trip to the beach over Father’s Day 2013 with four generations of Fahrenbrooks. Ann Patterson recently relocated to Dallas from Austin. She recently saw

Shannon McCutchin Finucane’s oldest son, Brendan, just turned 16 and began driving in February. This was a huge milestone for the family and a big help to Shannon’s driving schedule! His 16th birthday brought back fond memories of high school and driving with Gigi Hill Lancaster and Shannon Saalfield Thompson in their convertibles! The Finucanes came to Texas at the end of May when all three of their sons went to summer camp at Camp Champions in Marble Falls. Her sister, Alma Doll McCutchin Pratt ’86, has three sons who attended camp there also. While they were at camp, Shannon and her husband Brendan went on a long-awaited trip to Paris and Normandy. Shannon is looking forward to seeing all of you at our reunion. Betsey Boshell Todd has three teenagers. “Noah, Samuel, and Grace are great kids, and thank goodness, they are gently taking us through adolescence,” writes Betsey. They are starting the college application process with their eldest son, who finished his junior year in June 2013. All three kids are busy playing lacrosse, the beloved sport where they live in Maryland. Betsey is an art teacher at her kids’ school, and her husband David is an

interventional radiologist in Annapolis. David surprised Betsey with an early 20th anniversary trip to romantic Paris in March 2013. They filled the trip with out-of-this-world food and an abundance of museum visits. “If you happen to be near Baltimore, please look us up,” writes Betsey. Lora Kingsley went back to school and earned her master’s degree in counseling from UNT in 2012. She is an LPC specializing in play therapy with children, and working in a group practice in North Dallas. Gigi Hill Lancaster is living in Dallas and still selling Leontine Linens and raising three kids, Gigi (15), John (13), and James (7). She is still spending lots of time at Hockaday, and her daughter Gigi Lancaster (Form II) is going to Swiss Semester, 27 years after Gigi did! Gigi’s two boys go to school in Highland Park, and Gigi is excited to be a new board member to the Highland Park Education Foundation. Elisabeth (Giggy) Loeb Jacobson is enjoying coaching her youngest daughter’s soccer team, appropriately named the Cupcake Sprinkles. Yes, the Jacobson household is the proud owner of a giant plastic cupcake (with pink sprinkles on it) that is placed in the goal for each game so the girls know which way to kick the ball. Giggy spends the majority of her time driving Abby (10), Molly (8), Caroline (5), and golden retriever Baxter (9) to various games, practices,
recitals, and parks in her Honda Pilot “bus.” She has also spent the last year doing equity research for a hedge fund based in Palo Alto. And even though Denver has had one of the coldest and snowiest springs on record, Giggy and her husband Peter still love living in Colorado. They spent spring break in Los Angeles. The Harrell family has been busy as always, getting kids to all their stuff. Leslie Henderson Harrell’s daughter Virginia (11) plays soccer on a select team that takes the Harrells all over the Houston area. They still do a mother/daughter Bible study during the school year, which is in its third year, and they have an incredible group of girls. The seven girls from the group coordinated over 600 Valentine’s Day cards to deliver to all of the nursing homes in Brenham. “It is so great to see these girls talk with that generation,” writes Leslie. Virginia and Leslie traveled to New York in December 2012 to see Virginia’s friend perform in Elf on Broadway. They had a great time and did all the “Christmas in NYC” things. In January, the Harrells took the kids to Disney for the first time. Leslie’s mom went with them and really enjoyed herself. Her son Marshall IV (8) keeps them running with all the sports that he likes to do. He loves swimming right now (which makes his mom happy!). He plays every sport he can participate in around Brenham. Leslie ran two half marathons this year and achieved two personal records. The first race was the Houston Half, then a month later she flew to New Orleans for another. Megan Manser Wood co-chaired the first-ever fund raiser for the Nasher

Museum called “The Great Create” in April 2013. There were 500 people who attended for a family fundraiser event at the Nasher. Families with children spent a Sunday afternoon in the garden. Ten artists had tables where kids created artwork, while families danced to a kids’ Beatles cover band and had a nice lunch in the garden. Allison V. Smith ’88 was manning a booth teaching kids how to use Hipstamatic to make cool photography. “If you didn’t make it this year, I hope everyone can come next year,” writes Megan. Megan’s husband Brady opened a new drive-in movie theater in Fort Worth in April 2013, and hopes to see everyone at the drive-in next summer. Who would have predicted Megan would end up as a cheer mom? Her daughter Honor (10) surprised them all by getting into competitive cheer and she loves it immensely and, thus, Megan has spent many a weekend at cheer competitions. Jennifer Goodman Nelkin’s son Zachary graduated high school and will be attending her alma mater, Brown, next year. Congrats! Jenny Miercort Turkyilmaz’s girls are almost 10 and 7 and are absolutely thriving and having so much fun. Jenny is still working as a school nurse, but she has also started a side business as an intuitive consultant and hopes to build that to the point where she can quit her day job. Jenny still studies and teaches at the School
of Metaphysics and is also studying to become a certified spiritual counselor. She is also getting more and more into writing, wrote a book last year, and has plans for a screenplay that she wants to write this summer. Jenny’s husband is an amazingly talented photographer and filmmaker, and recently was director of photography on a short film that has been submitted to several notable film festivals. “Basically we’re all just having a great time and constantly learning and testing new waters. Life is good,” writes Jenny. Michelle Brodsky Goldstein writes: “I finally have some news to share! My family (husband Peter, son Zak, and I) is living in Cape Town, South Africa,
for the next four months on a Fulbright Grant through the United States State Department. We arrived mid-March and are leaving mid-July. Peter will be making an interactive map of Cape Town with local high school students. Zak will be attending Reddam House, which is a secular, co-ed school here in Cape Town. I am working remotely with my clients via Skype and email. We’ve spent most of our time at the beaches on both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean sides. The hardest thing to get used to is driving on the opposite side of the road and the steering wheel is on the right — we keep getting in on the wrong side of the car. Also the signals are backwards, so at least once a day I turn on the wipers instead of my turn signal!” Katherine Rogers Roberts spent nearly two years putting together the Hockaday Centennial Exhibit, which is a must-see. The exhibit celebrates the remarkable life of Ela Hockaday herself. Anyone and everyone should come see this amazing treasure! Katherine also continues to sell as much real estate in Dallas as possible. She is excited about her upcoming adventure as St. Mark’s Parents’ Association President-Elect. Beth Bankhead relocated to Denver and has since been enjoying some travel. She took a cool adventure — no pun intended — to Antarctica and even took a polar plunge! warmer. Amy Gilliam Anderson is a pediatric dermatologist in a private practice in Palo Alto, and her husband Jason is an in-house attorney at Skype. Their son Derek is almost five years old and starts kindergarten in the fall. Kathryn Gunby Cline has two Hockadaisy sisters-in-law, Lauralee Thornton Gunby ’96 and Annelise Thornton Maijer ’94. This has been the year of travel and activity for the Clines. They went to Hawaii with Kathryn’s parents in July 2012. She went to Santa Fe in September for Annelise and Rolf’s wedding. The Clines all went to Savannah in September for a family wedding. Robert and Lauralee with their three kids, Kathryn’s parents (plus a favorite cousin and two aunts), and the four Clines had a great time skiing Breckenridge in February 2012, including night-skiing in Keystone for the kids and Kathryn. Her dad splurged on a fabulous house with plenty of room and entertainment for all. Kathryn works full-time nights on a cardiac step-down unit at Saint Joe’s in Atlanta, which allows her to still try to be a full-time mom. When Kathryn is not working, she is busy volunteering for and attending her kids’ performances and games. This year her son Briggs played in the Varsity Drum Line as a seventh grader, plays trumpet in the band, is working his way through his Boy Scout ranks, played basketball, had a part in his school’s production of The Sound of Music, and just finished a whirlwind soccer season; while her daughter Sarah has really focused on her art, played on her school volleyball team, then went straight into the all-consuming club volleyball season, and is currently playing with a varsity girls’ team as a seventh grader in a competitive volleyball league, as she prepares to start her first beach volleyball season. The kids both swim competitively in the summer in between various scout, sports, and summer camps, and hopefully a little down time at the beach. The kids were both inducted into their school’s chapter of the Junior National Honor Society in the fall, will be 14 in August, and will be in eighth grade. They even

have a new Head of School this year who came to us by way of some Hockaday foes ... St. John’s and Holland Hall! Briggs and Kathryn celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary in March 2013, right before Spring Break, as he headed off to sail around the Abaco Islands, Bahamas, with Briggs, Jr. for a Boy Scout High Adventure trip, and Sarah and Kathryn headed downtown to the Georgia World Congress Center for the Big South Qualifier volleyball tournament, hosting nearly 1,300 teams on 169 courts for three days. Kathryn definitely plans to make the big 100th anniversary celebration next year! Eliza Thomas Quigley took the helm of the Galveston ISD Educational Foundation as the new Executive Director in the fall of 2011. The foundation has made huge strides in partnering and supporting teachers and students within the district. Since her arrival, the giving distribution capacity of grants to teachers in GISD and a district-wide initiative has almost doubled in a year. Eliza has been appointed to the UTMB School of Health Professionals Advisory Board, and is the Vice-President of the Board for the Harris and Eliza Kempner Fund. The Quigleys have three children. Cara is 15 and a freshman cheerleader at Ball High School. Quinn is five years old and Kadin just turned four. Danny and Eliza love living on the island, and Eliza feels a great sense of pride coming back to her roots and giving back to her community after being gone for almost 20 years. Last summer they took a family vacation to Aspen and this summer they plan to go back to Park City, where they got married seven years ago. Debbie Loeb Keon has a new dance single out called So Into You, and it is available on iTunes and Amazon as well as many other places. The song was mixed in Amsterdam and is being played all over the world on different dance radio stations. She is having a ball with her son Sam (3½). Debbie loves running into other Hockaday and St. Mark’s old friends at Lamplighter, where Sam attends. Debbie keeps in close touch with classmates Julie

On the business side, her business just became one of the world’s first YouTube Certified companies, helping large brands be successful on YouTube, and closed a huge investment round in March. Congratulations. Heather Lawrence Hopper continues to enjoy teaching yoga to adults as well as kids with special needs, leading yoga retreats in East Texas, and tutoring kids in grades two through nine. And, most importantly, raising her rambunctious and precocious two-year-old. We want to wish Karen Soltero a speedy recovery from necrotizing fasciitis in her leg. It was a busy and fun weekend. After the Alumnae Day Luncheon at the School, we gathered at the home of Cindy Casey Brown on Friday night to celebrate and hear an update on the state of the School from Headmistress Kim Wargo. Saturday brought the Alumnae Picnic with kids and families, and a wonderful Mexican dinner at the home of Heather May Smith. Heather displayed all of her Hockaday uniforms from Lower School to Upper School, and even included our graduation gown! We had an amazing turnout — better than we could have hoped! She and her husband, Matt, have settled in Broomfield, Colorado, just outside of Denver. Rachel is practicing spine and sports medicine at the University of Colorado and enjoys being a busy parent of a toddler. Courtney Elliott Itson and Greg Itson welcomed their second son, Andrew Elliott Itson, on November 18, 2012. Andrew’s godparents are Bethany Elliott Holloway ’98 and Stephen Holloway and Landy Elliott Fox ’92 and Alex Fox (St. Mark’s Class of ’93). Cousins Evie Fox (second grade) and Callan Fox (kindergarten), grandmother Linda Elliott (fifth grade humanities teacher), and Andrew’s big brother James (4) love him very much. Jennifer Fetner Booth, Ailsa Heard, Alison Foxworth Schilpp, Kirsten Marsh Breckinridge, and Monece Cullum Appleton got together with their families for an Easter celebration in Dallas this year. Holley Elam married David Blount, her childhood crush since she was 12, on February 14, 2012. She completed her Master’s in Clinical Psychology and is currently working toward her LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) and LPA (Licensed Psychological Associate). She and her husband live in Odessa with their two amazing children, Logan Tracewell (6) and Dylan Michelle (21 months). Daley Haggar lives in Los Angeles and is writing for the show Anger Management with Charlie Sheen. She reports that she’s not on Facebook, but would love to hear from people on email if they’re in town and want to catch up! Annie Whitworth Downing welcomed her daughter, Alice Elizabeth, on May 29. Barth, her husband Michael, and their two-year-old Avery moved to Hong Kong in March so that she could take over as Chief Operating Officer of Asia for global law firm White & Case. Katie Johnson Hale lives in Dallas and left Dr Pepper Snapple Group (after nine years) to join ranks with the marketing and strategy team over at Ericsson. Technology is a far cry from carbonated sugar water, but she reports that it’s a good change! She and her husband, Bobby, are doing great, as are Cannon (4½ years) and Harper (18 months). As you all know, Hockaday is celebrating its Centennial during the 2013–2014 school year. This celebration coincides with our 20th Reunion on April 11–12, 2014. So, please mark your calendars now for what will be a great weekend to see friends, teachers, and all of the amazing changes that have been made to the campus in recent years. Hockaday! Emily Mayfield is a psychologist in the Air Force. She lives in the Azores, a small group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal. Zareen Malik and her husband, Ahmed, will celebrate five years of marriage in July. They have been living in St. Louis, Missouri, for the past three years and are moving to Chicago over the summer. Ahmed is joining a practice at Central Dupage Hospital. Her son, Zayn, will turn two years old in June, and they also recently welcomed daughter Zara on March 23, 2013. Paige Hunt Gialanella is working part-time but spending most of her free time chasing around her 17-month-old twins, Grant and Alice. Ashley Murphy is still busy teaching high school English in McKinney, and is getting ready to add French instruction to her repertoire. She took a fun trip to Cabo San Lucas in October 2012 with her family. Kim Kircher James also got to take a fun trip last fall, traveling to Telluride in September with Gracie Everett and Kate Thomas. Bethany Elliott Holloway is still in Dallas and has been hard at work on the Hockaday Alumnae Board and fundraising for

Trude Goodman was appointed Program Director of the Stage Harbor Sailing School in Chatham, Massachusetts. Yes, it is the same place Trude has worked since her freshman year of high school, making this summer her 18th with the program! Lisa Lozano got married to Brian White in New York City on August 25, 2012. In the small world department, Brian is the cousin of Nicole Parker King, who was Lisa’s matron of honor. Jenna Zouzelka Osborne was one of Lisa’s bridesmaids. Lisa and her husband will continue to live in NYC, where they both work in finance. Athena Wickham gets double congratulations! First she married Peter Stuart, and then in October 2012 they welcomed baby Elliott Stuart. Sara Frankfurt Gail, along with David and big brother Jacob, welcomed Noah Corbin Gail on December 14, 2012. While he arrived quite a bit before his due date, he is now happy and healthy at home. Victoria Montgomery Cullum and B.A. Cullum recently celebrated their son Montgomery Best Cullum’s first birthday. He was born March 14, 2012 and was 7 lbs., 10 oz., and 19.5 inches. In the professional world, Kristin Tucker wrote her first produced television episode, episode 19 of Disney Channel’s Dog with a Blog, which should air sometime in the coming months. She is looking forward to the moment when she sees her name in the opening credits. Congrats, Kristin! Kelly Little chaired the 35th Anniversary Chi Omega Christmas Market in November 2012. Over 10,000 people came to shop, and the event raised $305,000 for Dallas area charities. Nice work, Kelly! Rhiannon Rees is completing her master’s in mechanical engineering at SMU and is working for Nearburg Producing Company. Melinda Ku works for Neiman Marcus as a copywriter, combining her love for beautiful items and words. Angie Fayad is in the Ph.D. psychology program at UT Southwestern. Nicky Drawbridge is currently working as a research assistant in the psychiatry department at Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. She will be leaving that job to begin medical school at Texas Tech University in July. Jocelyn Huang is in New York, finishing up her first year at NYU Law School. Shannon Carney is still living in Los Angeles and working for the same accounting firm, CohnReznick, but she is open to a new adventure. Elizabeth Baker is living in sunny San Diego and working for AT&T as an account manager. Andrea Autrey is working as a producer’s assistant at a small production company in Santa Monica, after moving to Los Angeles in July. Madison Lacerte has been on location filming in Vancouver, but she will be returning to Los Angeles in May. Lindsey Adams Williams will be celebrating her one-year anniversary with her husband Jarrod, graduation from Dallas Baptist University, and
the start of her new job. She is the executive director of “#JFK Day” (a political non-profit set in place to commemorate the Kennedy legacy – jfkday.com). Rachel Bell will graduate from The University of Texas Law School and study for the bar exam in Dallas this summer. This fall she will move to D.C. to start work as a judicial law clerk for judges at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, focusing on administrative and environmental law. Alexandra DePasse is getting a master’s degree in illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. The Bay Area has provided a lovely change of scenery! Andi Pimentel has been working at Uber Technologies for the past seven months running social media, partnerships, marketing, customer support, and business development for headquarters in San Francisco. She’s spending the next few months launching the Uber office in Mexico City so if you’re around, hit her up! Elizabeth Bruyere is still working in London for LEK Consulting, the management consulting firm she has been working for since graduation. She also notes that Libby Longino is in Oxford getting her Ph.D. so they have hung out a few times. She has also made an effort to see Hockadaisies when back in the States and has enjoyed seeing Elizabeth Stevenson, Anna Rosenblatt, and Farrell Rafkin, all of whom are doing well! 2007 Class Agent – Communications: Anna Simon anna.simon@gmail.com This year, Maillil Acosta is finishing her two-year commitment to Teach for America. She has accepted a position with Teach for America in Dallas as a Manager of Teacher Leadership and Development, where she will be managing a group of 35 first- and second-year TFA corps members in low income communities. Sarah Dockery works for a small bilingual school in rural Honduras with her fiancé Dean Galaro! She has been in Honduras since August 2011, where she is the Director of English Programming. In Honduras, she’s also co-founder and CEO of One Family Honduras, a 501(c)(3) certified non-profit dedicated to providing quality, bilingual education to students who would not otherwise have the financial resources to attend school. Currently stationed in South Korea, Megan Hoskins is serving as an Intelligence Officer at DGS-3. Megan writes: “It’s an incredible leadership opportunity. I started out as a Flight Commander, overseeing 60 people, and am now the OIC of our Analysis shop, responsible for a few dozen people, as well as the ops crew during missions. I was promoted in May and am slated to

move to my next base in November, for now — maybe later if I choose to extend, but I’m having a blast, learning a lot, and getting to travel a little bit in my free time!” Caitlyn Loucas moved to Boston last summer and is currently working as the Clinical Research Coordinator with the Pediatric Psychosocial Oncology Department at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Caitlyn writes: “It’s demanding work — both mentally and emotionally — but I absolutely love it! This specific field has been my interest for many years, so it’s a phenomenal opportunity and a privilege to work with this amazing community of researchers and clinicians.” Outside of work, she is training for her first half marathon and will be applying to clinical Ph.D. programs in the fall. Katie Morgan is currently working on a master’s degree in agriculture and animal sciences while living and ranching in Fannin County, north of Dallas. Kavitha Surana plans to start graduate school in NYU’s Global and Joint Program in the fall. She will study journalism and European and Mediterranean studies. These two events were also attended by Katie Albritton, Mandy Cline, Maggie Darver, Kiki Dreyfuss, Becca Fine, Alex Fisher, Kiran Gupta, Haley Huffines, Anna Kern, August Knape, Rachael Wildes, Hattie Lindsley, Rosie Parravano, Christine Peterson, and Kate Reeder. As far as individual updates, Haley Huffines is currently living in Center City, Pennsylvania, and working with the consulting firm Accenture. She welcomes any Hockadaisies in the area to come visit for a weekend! Laura Jean Stargardt is a mechanical engineer at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. Rachael Wildes works as an analyst at Crow Holdings Capital Partners in Dallas, and August Knape is an associate health professional at Compass Professional Health Services. Anna Kern is managing and curating art exhibits at Kirk Hopper Fine Art, and Molly Rosenblatt recently returned from Gorlitz, Germany, where she worked as an art department assistant on the new American Empirical Pictures & Studio Babelsberg film. Janie Bruyere is working in media in NYC and living in the West Village. Many of our Daisies will also be attending law school in the fall. Rosie Parravano will be attending Harvard Law School, and Becca Fine and Peyton Budd will be heading to Austin to start their first hockaday magazine
year at The University of Texas School of Law. Shaye Martin and Hattie Lindsley are roommates in Austin (they welcome visitors anytime!). Shaye Martin is finishing up her second rotation in corporate communications in the Leadership Development Program at Dell, and she is excited to head out to Santa Clara, California, in the fall to help launch a marketing initiative and enjoy the beach. Hattie Lindsley is a design assistant with Bunkhouse Group, where she coordinates retail and event management for hotels in Austin, Marfa, and San Antonio. She is still wildly curious about how cactus and their livelihood reflect climate change. Jennifer Mathai lives in Los Angeles, working as a high school Resource Specialist Assistant. Beginning in June she will move to Boston to attend
Boston College, where she will pursue a master’s in special education as well as a teaching credential through the Donovan Scholarship Program. Jennifer was also recently awarded the Bank of America Leaders in Urban Teaching Fellowship! Another celebratory congratulations to Maggie Darver Orenstein, who married her high school sweetheart Spencer Orenstein on May 25, 2013, at the Dallas Museum of Art. Maggie celebrated this day with several Hockadaisies including Christine Peterson, Kate Reeder, Amanda Cline, and Kiki Dreyfuss who were her faithful and attentive bridesmaids. work on her thesis about the cruise industry. After graduation, she will be working for Epic Systems as a project manager and implementation consultant in Madison, Wisconsin. Caroline Stephens, Cyonna Holmes, Erin Ku, Alex Queener, and Elizabeth Novinski enjoyed their annual reunion in Denver, Colorado. Elizabeth will be completing a year of service in healthcare post graduation. Caroline will be moving in with Cyonna in Dallas, and will be working as a scribe or research assistant over the next year before beginning medical school. Two others back in Texas post graduation are Katie Cummiskey and Hillary Wallace. Katie will be in Dallas, working with Texas Instruments in their finance, accounting, and operations division. Hillary is graduating from Baylor with a B.B.A. in finance and marketing and will begin working at ExxonMobil in Houston as a member of the financial controllers department. Lindsey Bank is graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in psychology. She has been an active member of AEPhi and has enjoyed seeing other Hockadaisies around campus, such as Spin Beck, Melissa Russell, and Allye Doorey. Post graduation, Lindsey will be beginning optometry school. Melissa Russell is graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in advertising and a minor in Spanish. She is an active member of Pi Beta Phi and also participates in the Texas Advertising Group. Spin Beck is graduating with a degree in Plan II Honors and an English minor. Spin swam with the UT swim team all four years of school ,and had the opportunity to swim at the US Olympic trials this past summer. Additionally, she has gotten involved with an assortment of comedy and improv groups. Gail Chiangda is enjoying her last year at SMU and is graduating with a degree in electrical engineering with biomedical specialization and minors in math and chemistry. Gail received the Richter International Fellowship from the SMU Honors Program, and has spent her winter break conducting research
in Thailand for her publication, “Cultural Influences in Diagnosis and Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis in a Thailand Medical Institution.” Elise McDonald, also at SMU, is graduating with a B.S. in management science, an M.S. in systems engineering, and a minor in business administration. She will begin working with Marianna See as an associate consultant at Bain and Company in Dallas. Elise was also awarded a number of high honors from SMU, including the “M Award” for outstanding service to the university. Chloe Teeter will also be doing consulting, and will be moving to NYC to work as a consultant with IBM. Claudia Otten has one more year left with her bachelor of architecture program at USC. Her family just moved to Tokyo, and she will be spending the summer interning with Atelier Bow Wow in Tokyo. Betty Lai stayed busy throughout her senior year by being involved as an international peer ambassador, a tour guide, a yoga assistant, and a marketing and communications intern with the BCA Study Abroad Department. Amber Hardeman served as the president of Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish Honor Society, and is working on writing a thesis entirely in Spanish. She also spent time serving as captain on the club golf team. Amber was also honored with a competitive student lab position in the Syncore Organic Chemical Synthesis Lab at the Vanderbilt Institute of Chemical Biology. Cynthia Tassopoulos finished her last season with field hockey at Harvard and will be working for The Advisory Board Company in D.C. this next year. Annee Garton is graduating from Stanford with a major in mathematical and computational science. Over this past summer she was part of a ski show that involved a five-man pyramid, and she was the top skier on the pyramid! Also at Stanford, Alina Pimentel is graduating with a degree in human biology and a minor in French. She studied abroad this past fall in Seville, Spain, and had a great host family, for which she is thankful. During the school year, she is working at the Chicago mayor’s office for spring quarter, and over the summer she will be working at Southwest Airlines’ headquarters in Dallas. At University of Chicago, Nur Kara is involved with initiating a program through the neighborhood schools program on campus for Chicago Public Schools called Mosaic. Mosaic is a child empowerment program using art to see how children think and react towards writing, painting, drawing, singing, dancing, and other craft making. This program will hopefully allow more privileged members in the University of Chicago community to help make a difference. At The University of Michigan, Sarah

The Class of 2012 has had a busy and successful year! We’ve all enjoyed our first year in college, and have begun to find our places in our new campus communities. Representing the arts, Leila Safavi and Megan Gross each joined their respective radio stations, and produced their own shows. Caroline Sydney, Allie Heck, Rupsha Basu, and Kristin Lin all write or contribute opinion columns to their college newspapers. Rachel Barber has been interning for an app which will come out this summer, called “Figr,” described as “a fashion version of Instagram.” On the athletic side, Isabella So and Avery Youngblood continue to compete in fencing at a high level. Isabella placed in the top 20 at NCAA regionals, and Avery won first place in sabre in West Coast regionals, going on to compete in the National Fencing NCAA Championships in San Antonio. Hockaday’s commitment to community service continues to influence our lives. Michelle Tsai just finished testing to become an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, and will volunteer with Emory’s student-run EMS unit in the fall. Kristin Lin and Jennifer Qin contributed to a group that received a grant to encourage community engagement through a project called South Side in Focus, which will culminate in an exhibition set to open next year. Megan Neligan appeared in the University of North Carolina’s presentation of “Operatic Fairy Tales.” Megan Gross has a weekly radio show at the University of Pennsylvania’s WQHS station. And, of course, we’ve all been enjoying keeping in touch with one another.

Gilberg is heavily involved as a leader in many student organizations throughout campus. She is currently studying abroad in Seville, Spain. She plans on majoring in international studies, focusing in political economy and development, and minoring in entrepreneurship. She was the VP Philanthropy for Pi Beta Phi in 2012, and she is currently involved in Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity. Over the summer, she will be working as a management consulting intern at Baker Tilly in Chicago. At University of Chicago, Luyi Adesanya is planning to major in biology (specializing in endocrinology) and minor in human rights. With these two academic interests, she hopes to go into a field combining both clinical medicine and health policy/public health. She is the current President for SNMA–MAPS (Student National Medical Association–Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students) and she helped plan a campus-wide keynote address lecture which featured Dr. Freeman Hrabowski (University of Maryland at Baltimore County College President and Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People). Over the summer, she will be doing research at The University of Michigan Medical Center. Katherine Leuschel will be graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Texas Christian University this May. Milestones
Gail Drum, former Lower School faculty member (1977–1993), passed away July 7, 2012. Her daughters are Tricia Drum Davidson ’91 and Lynn Drum Lanyon ’93, and her granddaughter is Kate Davidson (first grade). During her time at Hockaday, Mrs. Drum served as Assistant to the Head of Lower School, pre-kindergarten teacher, and fourth grade science teacher. After her retirement in 1993, she remained involved at Hockaday as a substitute teacher and a Happy Haps coordinator. Mrs. Drum touched many lives during her years at Hockaday, and imparted many important daily lessons to her young students. A supportive friend and colleague, Mrs. Drum will be missed by many.
Julia (Judy) Dalton Hyland Greene, former Hockaday Director of Development, passed away August 8, 2012. Mrs. Greene is the mother of Julia Hyland Ambler ’79 and Leslie Hyland Rodgers ’82. She held numerous teaching positions, including teaching art at The Lamplighter School. Described as an “elegant and gracious woman who loved being in the company of friends and family,” Mrs. Greene will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Rosamond Larmour Loomis passed away at the age of 102 on March 3, 2013. Mrs. Loomis served as Hockaday’s Head of Upper School from 1948–1953. In 1953, she accepted an invitation to be the Headmistress of The Bishop’s School in La Jolla, California, where she served for nine years. Mrs. Loomis was an educator, counselor, friend, and role model to her “girls,” and during her 102 years she helped shape the lives of many through her shining example.

An interview with June Mattingly ’49 What are your favorite memories of being a student at Hockaday? Visiting Miss Hockaday’s house for tea, getting on the Honor Roll, wearing those funny black bloomers, the former campus, and being affectionately called a “Hockadaisy”! Why did you attend Hockaday? I’m a third-generation New Yorker whose family moved to Highland Park in the late ’30s. I matriculated at Hockaday in the second grade. Hockaday was then and is now the very best girls’ private school – I know what an unmatched education I received. Tell us about your past that’s reflected in your activities today. While earning a BFA (1953) in studio art at Bennington College, I met Helen Frankenthaler, David Smith, and Jackson Pollock. For one of my Non-Resident Terms in college, I worked in the library of the Museum of Modern Art. After five years in New York, I moved back to Dallas to raise three children in a contemporary home on Strait Lane. In the ’70s I worked as an interior designer for an architectural firm. In the ’80s and ’90s, to show emerging local artists, I opened my gallery in a building in Uptown. For the next eight years, most of my ten gallery shows each year got reviewed in both newspapers’ art sections (remember the Times Herald?). From my gallery, the Dallas Museum of Art purchased a suite of Robert Rauschenberg etchings, and I honored Donald Judd at a party I gave him in my home. I founded the Dallas Art Dealers Association (DADA) and chaired the Dallas Museum’s Friends of Contemporary Art. My range of interests includes the Friends of the KATY Trail, Planned Parenthood, and the Dallas Zoological Society, for which I co-hosted a Wilds of Africa party for Jane Goodall.

Describe what you do now. My five-decade career in the field of contemporary art inspired me to share my “eye” to spot undiscovered talents and my knowledge of art by reviewing museum and gallery exhibits for my website TexasContemporaryArt.com. In 2012, my first e-book titled The State of the Art: Contemporary Artists in Texas appeared on Amazon, with color photographs and reviews of the art of 94 history-making artists. A 2013 Second Edition has 34 artists plus updates on 29 artists from the first edition; both editions are published electronically to be environmentally friendly. Published articles reflecting my joy of being surrounded by good art and architecture were in PATRON magazine in 2012, as far back as 1984 in Dallas/Fort Worth Home & Garden and in between in PaperCity. Along the way, I won three AIA (American Institute of Architects) awards, for a house on the Trail and an office building. What changes do you see taking place in the art world? Fairs, galleries, auction houses, and even museums are changing the way they do business and the art world, as we know it now, will be almost unrecognizable in 20 years’ time. Describe other memorable experiences in your life. I’ve traveled all seven continents – from Istanbul, Helsinki, Vancouver, Casablanca, Athens, Beijing, Sao Paulo, New Delhi, Cairo, and Moscow – after London, Rome, Berlin, Madrid, and Paris, of course. To enjoy the wild’s natural beauty and its endangered inhabitants, I photographed penguins on icebergs in Antarctica, lowland gorillas in the Rwandan jungle, and whooping cranes on the Texas coast. For adventure, I white-watered at the base of Victoria Falls, climbed steep cliffs in Patagonia, birded on the Tibetan plateau, and canoed on the crocodile-filled Zambezi River. What advice do you have for Hockaday students? Stay intellectually curious. Learn to cope with the unexpected. Travel everywhere to understand the real world. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Be open-minded all the time. Never ever give up!
