Dear Hockaday Families, It is with great enthusiasm that we present this year’s selection of Special Occasions! These one-of-a-kind events are graciously hosted by Hockaday friends and families between October 2019 and May 2020. All ticket sales will benefit The Ela Hockaday Fund for Faculty Excellence. Our goal in curating this year’s line-up of 20 events was to provide myriad experiences across diverse pursuits and topics: … from music to meteorology, ... bourbon to bugs, ... golf to glass, ... spinning to the stage, ... champagne to cheer, ... tennis to tea, ... floral arranging to foreign affairs, ... interiors to insider perspectives, ... movies to mindfulness, … and even from soccer to ceramics; there is indeed something for everyone’s unique interests! Yet, we also strived to incorporate the idea of “POP!” and to weave an artistic motif throughout all events, so that the year-long celebration is cohesive, customized, and creatively fun! Spaces are limited and these events sell out every year, so don’t delay – mark your calendar for October 15 to attend the pre-sale event, and hurry to get your tickets online before they’re gone! Thank you to all of our Special Occasions event hosts, sponsors, volunteers, and participants. We are appreciative of the entire Hockaday community who has come together for an amazing line-up! Warmly and gratefully, Charlotte Hudson Carter ’99 Special Occasions Co-Chair

14 POPPING OUT OF THE SHADOWS: THE ART OF ESPIONAGE
SUNDA MARCHY, 5 – 7 PM8
Join us for an evening with the young woman who went straight from her college sorority to the CIA where she hunted terrorists and weapons of mass destruction. When Hockaday Upper School History Teacher Tracy Walder enrolled at the University of Southern California, she never thought that one day she would offer her pink beanbag chair in the Delta Gamma house to a CIA recruiter; or that she’d fly to the Middle East under an alias identity. Now with an ABC television show in development, Tracy Walder returns to Special Occasions to give insights into her tenure in the CIA and the FBI. The evening’s lecture will be set in the fascinating Crow Library and sculpture garden, which features statue and bust acquisitions from myriad conflicted countries, including communist dictators, leaders of authoritarian regimes, Marxist theorists, and other notorious socialist revolutionaries and rogues. From her perspective as a former covert operative and FBI Special Agent, Tracy will provide important context about the power vacuum after leaders fall and environments that are hospitable to terrorism. The evening will include a book signing and a complimentary copy of The Unexpected Spy! Beer, wine, hors d’oeuvres, and valet parking will be provided.
