UNWIND it’s Summer! ENTERING GRADES 1 – 10 TECHNOLOGY Minecraft® University Minecraft® needs no introduction. It has become a cultural phenomenon with over 23 million copies sold, and if you play yourself, you know how much time this game can consume. The game mechanics, however, are incredibly analogous to engineering and require coding skills. These skills are learned as you spend time within the game itself. In Minecraft University, we will use the game as a tool to focus on problem solving and programming techniques. We will also use Scratch, a visual programming language designed by MIT, to enhance the lessons of programming. Programming in Minecraft teaches you to think logically and introduces you to the inner world of computing. Camps are offered on a graduated basis, with the skills being taught advancing from the basics of the program through programming and quantum physics, with a dip into Java. You will be provided a coursework book and access to a campers-only whitelisted server for one year. Campers must have an account with www.minecraft.net.

Architectural Design in Minecraft Ages:

Entering Grades 8–10

Dates/Time: June 15 – June 26, 9:00 am – 11:00 am June 29 – July 10, 9:00 am – 11:00 am July 13 – July 24, 9:00 am – 11:00 am Tuition:

$220 participation fee as an elective within the Summer Institute; $500 as an individual class

Registration: www.hockaday.org/summer Start with the basics of aesthetic and functional design and learn how to incorporate architectural concepts like flow, movement, and negative space into your builds. Design and then create structures ranging from houses to bridges and aqueducts. Finish by taking ideas from multiple sources and combining them into your own unique structure. Coach Stewart Ball: Minecraft® University: Basic Physics and Minecraft Minecraft® University Minecraft® needs no introduction.

Use the Minecraft mod ComputerCraft to learn the basics of programming and then apply those skills via your own in-game robots. These robots can do anything, from building you a house to finding and mining diamonds for you. The only limit is your ability to direct them! At the advanced level, we’ll discuss the limitations of computers and how to work around them.

Learn the basics of Java, the most common programming language in the world, and use them to create your own modification of Minecraft. Add any item of your design to the game, expanding Minecraft in whatever direction you desire. At the end, you’ll understand the syntax and applications of Java and how they apply to Minecraft.

We will stress a full service motion, overhead, and volley skills. You will also learn strategy of singles and doubles play. After assessing your playing level, you will practice with and challenge others of comparable skill. The ball machine will be available and in case of rain, indoor activities that can be applied to tennis will take place. Grab your racquet and get ready for some tennis fun! In swimming, front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke are the strokes you will learn and strengthen in these two weeks. We will throw in some added water games for some friendly competition. You must be comfortable and independent in the water to participate in this camp.

A variety of writing techniques will be utilized as students create scripts, news articles, book reviews, and more. Students will respond to pieces through prose and/or poetry and create an original piece for peer review. Through the use of art, poetry, literature, current events and more, students will review and strengthen writing processes and skills. While the themes for each grade level might be the same, the depth to which the course is taught will vary according to grade level to achieve grade-appropriate instruction and challenge.
