A FOUNDATION OF EXCELLENCE In March 1971, Gordon Bowman ‘28, who at the time was the President of the Association, wrote a message to the Hokie Nation that depicts a foundational principle. It reads:

for student-athletes, and recruit the top young talent coming out of the high schools, we might as well get out of the game. Generating the funds for studentathlete scholarships is what the Virginia Tech Student Aid Association is all about. Continuing financial support through scholarships is the one way you can help guarantee that ‘Hokie’ means ‘winner’ in anybody’s language … Only you and other members of the Hokie Fraternity can make possible the new era in Virginia Tech athletics. If strong support for scholarships for student-athletes does not materialize year after year, top-ranking intercollegiate athletics can never be more than a fleeting dream.”

Thanks to the continued, generous support of the Hokie Club, Virginia Tech student-athletes have accomplished some incredible feats. From the transitions from the Metro Conference to the Atlantic 10 to the Big East to the ACC, to the victory in the Sugar Bowl over Texas, to the shutout of the US Olympic team by Virginia Tech softball, donors can take great pride in supporting the education of student-athletes who proudly wear orange and maroon.

The Virginia Tech Athletic Fund, or Hokie Club, was chartered by the commonwealth of Virginia as the Virginia Tech Student Aid Association on July 1, 1949, “… for the purpose of soliciting funds from Alumni and Friends of VPI with the sole intention of providing scholarships for students with recognized athletic and academic ability.”

Whether you are a longtime member renewing your commitment, or a new supporter, the importance that your contribution plays in advancing opportunities for our current student-athletes and helping to build the future of Virginia Tech Athletics cannot be overstated. It is our goal and vision to become the preeminent program in the Atlantic Coast Conference and nationally celebrated in all facets. However, our desire to be the best academically and athletically will not be possible without the continued help of Hokie Nation. This donor guide outlines a plan that will play a significant role in the future success of Virginia Tech Athletics. When the Virginia Tech Student Aid Association was first established in 1949, it was founded on the sole premise of providing scholarships for the student-athletes of Virginia Tech. It is vital to the future of Virginia Tech Athletics that scholarships continue to be the most important resource we provide our student-athletes, and for that reason, I am pleased to introduce our donors to the new programmatic structure of the Hokie Club. The new Hokie Scholarship Fund program (detailed in the following pages) will bring us back to our roots of providing the young men and women who represent Virginia Tech Athletics ample opportunity to be successful first and foremost in the classroom, but also in competition and the community. As the landscape of college athletics has evolved over the last two decades, the financial investment required to provide scholarships for our student-athletes is at an all-time high. Due to increases in tuition, fees, and cost of attendance, the athletics scholarship bill for the 2015-2016 school year totals approximately $14 million, up from $8.9 million five years ago. With this in mind, I ask that every member of the Hokie Nation consider making an impact and giving through the Hokie Scholarship Fund program. As you review this donor guide book, you will notice some improvements and modernizations. These new procedures apply a process that is fair, equitable, donor-centered, consistent with our ACC and Power 5 peers, and encourages involvement regardless of whether or not you desire season tickets. While the breadth of responsibility for the Hokie Club has expanded since 1949, the principle mission to provide scholarships for Virginia Tech student-athletes remains the same. The primary goal is to provide the funding necessary for the Athletics Department to cover the cost of scholarships for all student-athletes who receive scholarship aid each year. Other fundraising initiatives such as capital improvements, endowments and programmatic needs are also important and fall under the responsibilities of the Hokie Club. These initiatives, along with scholarship fundraising, are a vital part of moving Virginia Tech Athletics forward.

The landscape of intercollegiate athletics has vastly changed over the past two decades, as has the financial investment required to achieve excellence and to win championships. As the cost of scholarships has continued to rise, so too have expenses such as equipment, travel, nutrition, student-athlete development, strength and conditioning, and recruiting. We must grow and enhance our Hokie Club membership to continue our positive momentum.

There is strength in numbers: Building a championship culture starts with a strong commitment from our alumni and friends. Currently, Virginia Tech ranks 11th of 14 ACC members in annual scholarship fund dollars raised and fifth in total number of donors to athletics. NC State, Clemson and Florida State each have more than 20,000 athletic donors, which is double that of Virginia Tech. Also, while ALL friends of Virginia Tech are encouraged to participate, it should be noted only four percent of living Virginia Tech alumni currently give back to athletics. This ranks tied for 11th among our ACC peers. The following pages detail how you can personally make an impact and help us to be “strong together”! It is about our student-athletes; it is about competing at the highest levels.

Since 2012, Virginia Tech student-athletes have had the opportunity to enroll in a Summer I study abroad course titled Global Citizen Leadership. The course focuses on service, leadership development and sport as a tool for international development. Student-athletes work collaboratively with local community leaders to host a five-day sports camp for youth from Veron, Dominican Republic. The course is designed to foster a lifestyle of service to others with a deeper understanding of global challenges. A scholarship is more than a scholarship. We prepare Champions for Life.

THE FUTURE SUPPORT OF VIRGINIA TECH STUDENT-ATHLETES With the education and development of our student-athletes at the core of the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund, the progression and evolution of the Hokie Club will create a more sustainable model and enable Virginia Tech Athletics to continue to grow and be a national leader. Currently, Virginia Tech is one of only a few schools within the ACC and the Power Five conferences that does not participate in a “per-seat” priority seating program in order to raise annual scholarship funds. Virginia Tech is also one of the few schools nationally that has not raised its annual donor giving levels over a significant period of time. Therefore, annual scholarship fund donations have remained fairly flat, while the cost to provide scholarships has rapidly increased. Under the new Hokie Scholarship Fund program, season tickets in both Lane Stadium and Virginia Tech Carilion Court at Cassell Coliseum will have an annual per-seat minimum gift requirement that varies based upon section or location. With approximately 75 percent of scholarship funding coming from priority seating for football and men’s basketball, the Hokie Scholarship Fund program will provide an invaluable resource for Tech Athletics. Both Lane Stadium and Virginia Tech Carilion Court at Cassell Coliseum will undergo reseatings for the 2017 seasons. *Previous reseatings occurred in 2004 and 2012

THE NEW HOKIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND PROGRAM The new Hokie Scholarship Fund program is designed to address the need for increased funding for annual scholarship support of Hokie student-athletes. All gifts given through this program will go directly to scholarship support. The overall program includes a new priority seating and parking program, exclusive donor benefits, priority point system, and a new and improved benefit allocation process. With the goal of elevating Virginia Tech Athletics’ ability to compete for championships while better meeting the needs of our student-athletes, the Hokie Scholarship Fund program comes as the result of more than a year of extensive research and analysis that included data collection from donors/ season ticket holders, ACC peer institution review, a focus group, a national review of Power Five Conference institutions and a comprehensive look at schools recently implementing major football and/or men’s basketball priority seating changes.

How Scholarship Seating Will Work

Beginning in 2017, football and men’s basketball season ticket holders seated in designated “scholarship sections” throughout Lane Stadium and Cassell Coliseum will be asked to contribute a minimum per-seat scholarship gift each year to secure a priority location for season tickets for football and/or men’s basketball. Gift amounts will vary based on location within the stadium/ coliseum. The Hokie Club is also introducing a new and easier to understand priority point program and annual giving benefits chart that will present donors with additional benefits based upon their giving level, including (but not limited to) parking, exclusive event invitations, and the ability to purchase postseason tickets (please see pages 16 and 17). The Scholarship Seating Program will officially launch in 2017 (please see pages 18 and 19 for other important dates). All donors who wish to be eligible for benefits are asked to make their gift to the Hokie Scholarship Fund by the March 31st, 2017 giving deadline. Donors will then be ranked based upon their priority points for a complete reseating of Lane Stadium, which will occur in May of 2017. All donors who wish to be eligible for benefits related only to men’s basketball will be asked to make their gift by June 30th, 2017.

Benefit Allocation Process

Priority Season Ticket and Parking for Football and Men’s Basketball

Seating for season tickets in football and/or men’s basketball will be based upon your priority points and making (at least) the minimum gift annually for “scholarship seat” locations. Parking will be based upon your priority points and meeting the minimum giving level to be eligible for a donor’s desired zone for football (please see pages 22-23). Priority points will be determined based upon the Hokie Club priority point system. Similar to previous years, season ticket and parking selections will take place during your assigned time slot using Ballena online selection technology.

Seating for Single Game, Away Game, Miniplans, Neutral Site, and Postseason Tickets

Donors who give at the top three scholarship fund giving levels (Hokie Stone, Hokie Scholar, Hokie Ambassador) will receive first priority for seating for single game, away game, miniplans, neutral site and postseason tickets for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball with the Ambassadors receiving first priority, followed by the Scholars, and finally the Hokie Stone donors. The remaining tickets (if available) will be allocated throughout all other donor giving levels based upon donors’ priority point totals.

Other Benefits

All other benefits will be allocated first based upon donors’ annual Hokie Scholarship Fund giving level and secondly based upon their priority points. Please see the Benefits Chart on page 16 for detailed information.

HOKIE CLUB DONORS WHO PURCHASE BOTH FOOTBALL AND MEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON TICKETS Under the new Hokie Scholarship Fund program, donors who wish to purchase season tickets to both football and men’s basketball will only be asked to make a single annual gift for seating with the HIGHER of the two per-seat requirements determining the minimum gift amount. Your total gift amount must also be received by the March 31st, 2017 giving deadline. Example: If a donor selects four seats in section 6 for football, their total perseat minimum gift requirement would be $2,400 ($600 per-seat) for football. If that same donor selects six tickets for men’s basketball in “The Paint” portion of section 15, the total donation requirement would be $1,500 ($250 per-seat) for men’s basketball. The donor would only need to donate a minimum of $2,400 to cover his/ her seating requirements for both football and men’s basketball for 2017. See pages 21 and 25 for seating charts. 14

PRIORITY POINTS PROGRAM

The revised and simplified Hokie Club Priority Points Program will be utilized to reward both donor loyalty and generosity. Each donor’s priority point total will determine their priority ranking and play a determining factor in how various benefits are allocated, such as: Season ticket location selection order for football and/or men’s basketball Neutral site and postseason ticket allocation including ACC championships, NCAA tournaments, and bowl games Season parking selection order for football and allocation for men’s basketball Note: Annual Hokie Scholarship Fund giving levels will also factor into parking selections and allocations.

Donor giving level and associated benefits (please see page 16) will be based only upon annual giving to the Hokie Scholarship Fund. All other gifts, including capital projects, endowed scholarships, sport specific giving, and gifts-in-kind will not count toward a donor’s annual giving level. However, these gifts will receive cumulative credit and are used for priority point calculations. Three NEW scholarship fund giving levels have been added. These include the Hokie Stone ($15,000-$25,328), Hokie Scholar ($25,329-$42,326), and Hokie Ambassador ($42,327+) levels, which reflect actual costs for in-state and out-of-state full scholarships. The aforementioned benefits and giving levels will come into effect in 2017.

Please note that the new priority points system will be used to recalculate your current point total and donor rankings beginning in 2017-18. FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP SEATING Under the new Hokie Scholarship Fund program, Lane Stadium will undergo a reseating for the 2017 football season. The minimum per-seat gift requirements for “scholarship seating” at Lane Stadium are noted in the stadium map key. Seating for season tickets in football will be based upon your priority points and making (at least) the minimum gift annually for your “scholarship seat” locations. Per-seat donation levels are in addition to the 2017 season ticket cost. These minimum per-seat gift amounts do not guarantee seating in the correlated sections; they are minimums needed to qualify to order tickets in those sections. Lane Stadium reseating will occur every three years moving forward, unless otherwise notified.

Scholarship Seating Season Ticket Priority Limit

The number of football season tickets a donor can purchase and/or select in priority locations for the 2017 season reseating has been increased. Please see benefits chart on page 16 for details.

First Right of Refusal

Once season ticket locations have been selected in 2017, donors will have the first right of refusal to renew their same seats each year (until the next scheduled reseating, estimated to be in 2020) as long as they maintain the minimum gift requirement for the seat locations in subsequent years. However, should a donor choose to not make the annual per-seat minimum gift required to renew those seats, they will be asked to reselect seat locations for the upcoming season.

Future Seat Improvement Opportunity

In non-reseating years, donors will have the ability to improve their seat locations via the priority point system and the annual Ballena seat selection/renewal process. This option will be available if a donor desires, but it is not mandatory as long as the per-seat gift minimums have been met for the seat locations you are renewing from the previous season.

Transfer Policy

All benefits related to donations and tickets (including priority points) can only be transferred to a spouse. Similar to previous years, no other entities will qualify for a transfer of donor or ticket benefits.

HOKIE SCHOLARSHIP FUND PRIORITY FOR FOOTBALL PARKING Hokie Club parking selections for 2017 will be based upon a donorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s priority points (as of March 31, 2017), with their Hokie Scholarship Fund annual giving level determining eligibility of location and number of spots (please see pages 16-17). Donors must give a minimum of $2,500 to the Hokie Scholarship Fund to be eligible for a reserved parking space in Zone A and a minimum gift of $550 to be eligible for a pass in Zone B. This gift minimum associated with reserved parking is NOT in addition to your minimum per-seat scholarship donation. All Hokie Scholarship Fund donors will be eligible to select a space in Zone C. Parking spaces in Zone B and C will NOT contain reserved numbered parking spaces. In other words, the pass will provide access into the lot on game day, but not a specific/reserved parking space within that lot. Also, new in 2017, donors can now qualify to purchase multiple parking passes depending on their giving annual level. Please see benefits charts on page 16 for details. How are gifts to the Hokie Scholarship Fund used? Your gift to the Hokie Scholarship Fund will go directly to help pay for scholarships for 550 student-athletes at Virginia Tech. Scholarship costs will total over $14 million for the 2016-2017 school year, and your gift will make a direct impact on the success of Virginia Tech student-athletes in the classroom, community and competition.

How is loyalty rewarded in the new systems? The revised and simplified Hokie Club Priority Point Program is designed to reward loyal supporters. Because points now accumulate over a lifetime of giving rather than starting over at zero each year; loyalty and consecutive years of giving will play a bigger role in your priority ranking.

Is the Hokie Scholarship Fund priority seating donation in addition to my annual gift? No. Your per-seat gift will count towards your annual giving level. For example, if you choose to give at the Golden Hokie Level ($2,500) and have four tickets in section 7L of Lane Stadium ($600 per-seat minimum donation required), the $2,400 total needed to cover your per-seat minimum requirement is met through your gift at the Golden Hokie giving level. In addition, if you have men’s basketball season tickets, so long as your per-seat donation requirements for men’s basketball does not exceed $2,400, your single Hokie Scholarship Fund gift that year will apply to your perseat basketball gift as well.

I have season tickets for football and men’s basketball, do I have to pay the per-seat requirements for both sports?

Under the new Hokie Scholarship Fund priority seating program, donors who purchase season tickets to both football, and men’s basketball will only be required to

make a single annual gift for seating and parking with the higher of the two per-seat requirements determining the minimum gift amount. Donors who wish to be eligible to park in Zone A for football must make a minimum Hokie Scholarship Fund gift of $2,500. A single gift covers football, men’s basketball and football zone parking as long as the minimums for all three are covered in the annual donation. Please see page 22.

If I give $1,200 (Silver Hokie Level) by March 31, 2017, and want to choose four seats in a section with a $350 per-seat donation requirement ($1,400 total) when selecting my seats, what do I need to do?

If based on your priority ranking, you are able to select seats in that section, you would then be asked to give an additional gift of $200 to the Hokie Scholarship Fund at the time of your selection in order to be able to select those tickets for 2017.

If I donate at the Hokie Scholar level, is there any way to have two or three parking passes together for football tailgating?

Yes. Donors who give at the Hokie Scholar level ($24,367-$40,737) have the option to purchase up to three parking passes in a lot in Zone B. However, they will no longer be eligible to purchase a parking pass in Zone A. Donors at the Hokie Stone level ($15,000$24,366) have the option to purchase parking passes in Zone A and Zone B.

What are other ways to accumulate priority points? Any gift made to the Hokie Club will earn two points for every $100. Other giving opportunities include planned giving, capital projects, scholarship endowments, special projects, and sport specific giving. Is there any way I can lose my priority points?

All points related to cumulative giving, purchasing postseason or neutral site tickets, membership in the Student Hokie Club, and being a former Virginia Tech letterwinner accumulate over time and will never be

lost. However, points related to consecutive years of giving to the Hokie Scholarship Fund and purchasing season tickets for football, menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basketball or womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basketball will be lost if a donor fails to either give or purchase tickets in consecutive given years.

Can my benefits related to giving and tickets be transferred to someone else? Similar to previous years, all benefits related to donations and tickets (including priority points) can only be transferred to a spouse. No other immediate family members, friends, or other entities will qualify for a transfer of donor or ticket benefits.

It will take support from all of Hokie Nation to help Virginia Tech Athletics grow and be recognized as one of the premier athletics departments in the country. Is my contribution to the Hokie Club tax deductible? Yes. All gifts made to the Hokie Club that receive benefits (by purchasing tickets and parking) are 80 percent tax deductible per IRS regulations. Special Projects & Sport Specific Giving

Support for the projects listed below is sincerely appreciated by Virginia Tech coaches and student-athletes and does benefit the overall Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Gifts to these programs are above and beyond gifts to the Hokie Scholarship Fund and add to donors’ cumulative priority point totals. However, they do not count as a scholarship fund donation and do not offer donors the benefits detailed on the Hokie Scholarship Fund Benefits Chart (noted on page 16), including priority season ticket and parking benefits. Funds given to these projects are used at the discretion of the head coach and the director of athletics. Over the Phone

Call the Hokie Club at (540) 231-6618 and a staff member will be happy to assist you with your contribution. Gifts over the phone can be made via MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or American Express credit cards.

HokieMatic (Electronic Funds Transfer and Payroll Deduction)

The HokieMatic electronic transfer option allows the donor to have his or her annual donation drafted with even payments on a monthly basis from a specified banking account; either checking or savings accounts are acceptable. Drafts will occur automatically at either the middle or end of each month as specified by the member. The Hokie Club will automatically renew the donor’s HokieMatic donations each year until directed otherwise by the donor.

Matching Gifts

Gifts-In-Kind

Donated items or services that would normally be purchased by the Virginia Tech Athletics Department are considered gifts-in-kind and are always appreciated. Subject to approval and IRS regulations, the value of the contribution would be credited to your cumulative giving amount. NOTE: Gift-In-Kind Donations will not qualify for Hokie Scholarship Fund benefits.

Gifts of Securities

Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc., are accepted and appreciated by the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund. These gifts typically involve publicly traded shares, such as those traded on the major exchanges and over the counter, as well as most mutual funds. Gifts of privately held stock, though more complex, are also possible. Supporting Virginia Tech with a gift of securities can provide significant tax benefits for the donor — bypassing capital gains taxes and providing a valuable income tax deduction — both of which effectively reduce the cost of making a gift.

Planned/Estate Gifts

Gifts in the form of life income gifts (Charitable Remainder Trust, Charitable Gift Annuity), charitable lead trusts, and/or bequests are common ways to state your intentions of leaving a future gift to Virginia Tech Athletics while receiving substantial income, estate, and gift tax benefits now.

Donor Advised Funds, Private Foundations & IRAs

Contributions from these avenues can be accepted and are welcome. However, please note the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund cannot offer any benefits including priority points and annual scholarship fund benefits for gifts coming from a donor advised fund, private foundation, or IRA per IRS regulations. Contributions from those sources may only be applied to a gift that is 100 percent tax deductible. Please consult your tax advisor for more information.

You may be able to increase your level of giving by matching your gift with matching funds from your employer. If your employer will match gifts to the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund, please enclose your employer’s form with your contribution. 31

DONOR AGREEMENT / TAX INFORMATION / WAIVER OF BENEFITS Donor Agreement

Donors to the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund adhere to and abide by the rules and regulations concerning intercollegiate athletics as determined by the NCAA, the Atlantic Coast Conference, and Virginia Tech. Should questions arise concerning the various rules and regulations, donors acknowledge they should contact the Virginia Tech Athletic Compliance Office at (540) 231-2696. Donors agree that should they be found by the NCAA or the university to have violated, knowingly or without regard for the same, rules or regulations, they may be disassociated from the university, athletics program, and its activities.

Donors can be expelled as a member of the Hokie Club and will forfeit all benefits and privileges (including the right to receive priority season tickets and parking at specified athletic events) until the end of the period of disassociation and subsequent reinstatement by the Hokie Club.

Tax Information

All contributions to the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund are considered gifts to Virginia Tech and are credited at full value for the purposes of the donor’s gift record at the Virginia Tech Foundation. Any contribution that entitles the donor to benefits is 80 percent deductible for income tax purposes, according to IRS Code Section 170(I). In addition,

the IRS has ruled the 80 percent portion of your contribution is only tax deductible to the extent it exceeds the value of any additional benefits received. The Virginia Tech Foundation will issue a tax receipt to individuals who make a contribution to the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund. We recommend you consult your tax advisor to determine how the tax laws may affect you.

Waiver of Benefits

For a gift to be 100 percent tax deductible, donors must decline their right to receive any benefits at the time you make your contribution. To decline your right to receive benefits, contact the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund at (540) 231-6618.
