CLEAR BAG POLICY WHAT TO KNOW
T
o provide a safer environment for spectators and to expedite fan entry into Lane Stadium, Virginia Tech Athletics implemented a new clear bag policy beginning in 2016 that will continue in 2017. The policy allows for an improved experience at gates and is also a public safety measure that is being successfully implemented at other large venues including fellow ACC venues. The following guidelines will be used for the Clear Bag Policy:
•

2017 VIRGINIA TECH FOOTBALL FAN GUIDE
CLEAR BAG POLICY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON THE CLEAR BAG POLICY:
Why did Virginia Tech Athletics adopt this policy? We review our stadium security policies every year looking for ways to improve them. Virginia Tech Athletics, along with the Virginia Tech Police Department, believe it made sense to adjust our policy to enhance public safety and make stadium access more efficient by limiting the size and style of bags carried into the stadium. This is a proactive measure to enhance safety inside and outside the stadium and speed the security screening process. This is about both safety and improving the overall fan experience. How does the new policy improve public safety? The clear bag is easily and quickly searched and greatly reduces faulty bag searches. It also supports the Department of Homeland Security’s “If You See Something, Say Something” campaign. How does this make it more convenient for fans? This will enable us to move fans through our check-points much faster. It will make the stadium’s job much easier, allowing staff to be more efficient and effective in checking bags brought into the stadium. There will be less time spent standing in lines at the stadium gates and fans will be able to be in their seats well before kickoff. Fans also will enjoy an improved sense of safety. Shorter lines mean fewer hassles. How many bags can each person bring into the stadium? One large clear bag — either a one-gallon Ziploc style bag or the 12” by 6” by 12” clear bag — plus a small clutch. The larger clear bag must be a standard 12” by 6” by 12” made of clear PVC vinyl and is easily searched. The one-gallon Ziploc bag is readily available, inexpensive and easily searched. The small clutch allows privacy for small personal items and also is easily searched. Can fans carry cameras, binoculars, smart phones or tablets separately from what they put in a clear bag? Yes. Binoculars or a phone or camera can be carried into the stadium so long as it is not in its own bag. This is not a restriction on items that fans have been able to bring into the stadium. It is only a restriction on the type of container used to carry items. 14
What about bringing blankets in cold weather? Fans will be able to bring blankets by tossing them over a shoulder or arm. They can be easily screened carrying a blanket into the stadium. What happens if I show up at the gate with a bag that is not permitted? Fans carrying bags not meeting the criteria will be instructed to either return the bags to their vehicle or check the bags at the lost and found. Are all purses prohibited? No. Small clutch purses, with or without a handle or strap, are permitted along with either the 12” by 6” by 12” clear tote bag or the one-gallon freezer bag. This should enable you to carry the same items you have in previous years and speed entry into the stadium for all fans because it will take less time to screen bags. Shorter lines means fewer hassles. We encourage fans not to bring any bags, but believe this policy balances fan needs with improved public safety and convenience. Do I have to put everything I’m carrying into the permissible bags? No. We are limiting only the type of bags carried into the stadium, not items that you normally bring to a game. Therefore, you can carry in your pockets or jacket keys, makeup, feminine products, comb, phone, wallet, credit cards, etc., if you choose not to put them in a clear bag or clutch. And you can carry a blanket over your arms, and binoculars and/ or camera around your neck or in your hands without the case. You can use the clear bag and clutch to carry other items. You will continue to have the flexibility to bring a wide variety of approved items into the stadium. Every member of your family may carry in a permissible bag. What about diaper bags? Diapers can be carried in a clear bag. Each member of a family, including children, would be allowed to carry an approved clear bag and a clutch purse into the stadium. If I have special medical equipment I need to have with me at all times, where do I put it? An exception will be made for medical necessary items.

ustin Fuente authored a phenomenal inaugural season as Virginia Tech’s head football coach as he guided the Hokies to 10 wins, an ACC Coastal Division championship and the largest comeback in school history as Tech registered a thrilling 35-24 win over Arkansas in the Belk Bowl. The consensus choice as the 2016 ACC Coach of the Year, Fuente led the Hokies to a final ranking of No. 16 in both the USA Today coaches’ poll and The Associated Press top-25 poll — Tech’s highest finish in both polls since 2010. In addition, the Football Writers Association of America named Fuente the top first-year FBS coach, an honor he shared with USC’s Clay Helton. Much of Virginia Tech’s success in 2016 could be attributed to a Fuente-led resurgence on offense. The Hokies tied or broke 10 single-season records, including points (490), touchdowns (61), first downs (330) and total offense (6,223 yards). The Hokies also returned to their dominant defensive ways as Tech ranked second in the nation in third-down defense (27.5), while ranking fourth among Power Five squads in tackles for loss (113.0). Virginia Tech also experienced a special teams’ resurgence as the Hokies returned to their Beamer Ball roots, blocking four kicks (three FGs, one punt), while registering TDs on a punt return and a blocked FG return. Fuente came to Tech after serving as the head coach for four seasons at the University of Memphis, where he inherited a program that went 5-31 in three seasons (2009-11) prior to his arrival and guided it to a 19-6 mark his final two seasons. In 2015, he helped the Tigers to a 9-3 record, which included a 37-24 win over then-No. 13 Ole Miss. That marked the highest-ranked opponent Memphis had beaten since knocking off then-No. 6 Tennessee in 1996. Following the season, his star quarterback pupil, Paxton Lynch, was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by Denver. In 2014, Fuente led Memphis to a 10-3 record
16
and to a share of the American Athletic Conference championship — the school’s first championship in football since 1971. The Tigers capped the season with a double-overtime victory over BYU in the Miami Beach Bowl, which gave the school its first 10-win season since 1938. Prior to going to Memphis, Fuente worked with Gary Patterson for five seasons at TCU. He was the running backs coach for the first two seasons and then became the quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator his final three seasons there. In 2009-10, Fuente coached current Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, who became TCU’s career leader in virtually every passing category. Dalton threw 50 touchdown passes and just 14 interceptions in his two seasons with Fuente, guiding TCU to bowl appearances in the Fiesta and Rose Bowls. Fuente’s initial coaching job came at Illinois State, where he coached quarterbacks (2001-03) before adding offensive coordinator duties to his responsibilities (2004-06). A product of Tulsa’s Union High School, Fuente played quarterback for two seasons (1996-97) at the University of Oklahoma and then transferred to Murray State for his final two years of eligibility, setting 11 school records there. In 1999, he earned Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year honor and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award. He went on to play professionally for the Arena Football League’s Oklahoma Wranglers. A 1999 graduate of Murray State with a degree in finance, Fuente and his wife, Jenny, have three daughters — Cecilia, Caroline and Charlotte. Established in 2001, the “Hokie Walk” is your chance to greet the football team as it arrives on campus. The “Hokie Walk” begins on Beamer Way directly outside of Hokie Village and ends at the Merryman Athletic Center. The team typically arrives approximately 2.5 hours prior to kick, but for updates on timing be sure to follow @VT_Football on Twitter. SKIPPER
In 1963, three Virginia Tech students and Corps of Cadets members built a cannon and it made its debut against VMI in the two schools’ annual Thanksgiving Day game. The students named the cannon “Skipper” after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. Ever since, Skipper 28
fires outside of Lane Stadium throughout Hokie Village, after the national anthem, and whenever the Hokies score. For more information, see page 6.

HISTORY OF THE LUNCH PAIL D HOKIES FOOTBALL
T
he famed Virginia Tech Lunch Pail has come to symbolize the blue-collar approach of the Hokies’ defense under longtime defensive coordinator Bud Foster. In 1995, Foster served as co-defensive coordinator with Rod Sharpless, whose mother-in-law found the original Lunch Pail in Mercerville, N.J. The pail once belonged to a coal miner and after a record-setting defensive season, the Lunch Pail became an iconic part of Hokies’ lore. The Pail travels wherever the Hokies go and its care is only entrusted to a defensive leader. Before the start of every season, a signed mission statement from the defense is placed in The Pail. Then every week, unit goals, team goals and keys to success are placed in The Pail, plus the turf from any road victories. Since 2008, The Pail has also contained the names of the 32 fallen Hokies taken in the April 16 tragedy. Corey Moore — whose jersey No. 56 is retired by Tech — is the only player who has ever earned lifetime possession of an incarnation of The Pail from Foster.
