2009 VIRGINIA TECH SOFTBALL

On March 26, 2008, the Hokie softball team pulled off one of the greatest upsets in softball history, beating the U.S. National Softball Team 1-0 at Oklahoma City. Behind a no-hitter from Angela Tincher and a RBI single from Caroline Stolle, the Hokies broke the Red, White & Blue’s 185-game preOlympic exhibition tour winning streak. This was the only loss for Team USA on its “Bound 4 Beijing” Tour in 60 games leading up to the 2008 Olympics.

STABILITY AT THE TOP

The key to a successful program is stability at the top and Virginia Tech has that in 14-year veteran head coach Scot Thomas. A native of Blacksburg, Thomas and his staff bring a wealth of experience to the field.

The 2009 staff: head coach Scot Thomas, assistant coach Barb Sherwood and associate head coach Al Brauns.

Getting to spend some time at the Women’s College World Series with the Hokie women, you realize how competitive they are and also how much fun they have playing the game. From Player of the Year Angela Tincher to the coaching staff, you understand how much they have accomplished in such a short time but also how much they enjoy the experience of being student-athletes at Virginia Tech. I have a young daughter and if she is good enough to play big-time college softball, I would be honored to have her coached by Scot Thomas.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

The field, which was completed in the fall of 1997, has dimensions of 200 feet down the lines and 220 feet to center field. Since the Hokies started playing at Tech Softball Park, they have compiled a record of 150-52 (.743), including a 17-0 campaign in 1999, a 20-3 record in 2000, 18-4 in 2001, 16-3 in 2002, 15-6 in 2004 and 12-4 in 2007 and 15-5 last year. When weather doesn’t allow for outdoor practice, the team moves into Rector Field House. Located adjacent to the playing field, the field house has an artificial surface, batting cages and ample room for drills. It is also equipped with a training room. New banners were placed on the outfield wall recently, celebrating Tech’s two ACC titles, its regular-season ACC title in 2007, the past four NCAA Regional appearances, its Super Regional and the Women’s College World Series berth from last year. A special banner was hung in right field on Sept. 13, 2008 for 2008 USA Softball National Player of the Year Angela Tincher, who had her number retired in a special ceremony before a football game.

2009 VIRGINIA TECH SOFTBALL

The Virginia Tech softball team has the luxury of playing and practicing in some of the finest facilities on the east coast. Using the Tech Softball Park, Rector Field House and the Jim “Bulldog” Haren weight room, the Hokies train with the best in preparing to win championships. Tech fans have taken a love to their Hokie softball team, with attendance skyrocketing through the roof over the past four years. In 2005, Tech ranked 15th nationally in average attendance and was 17th in 2006, averaging 551 fans per home contest. In 2007, the Hokies averaged 547 fans per home event, 21st-best in the country. Last year, that number rose to 699, placing Tech 13th nationally and in the top 25 for the fourth-straight year. Virginia Tech was also 21st in the country in overall home attendance with 8,395 people attending the 12 dates. For colleges competing in 12 or fewer home dates, Tech led the nation in overall attendance. Big crowds are the norm at Tech Softball Park as attendance has gone over the 1,000 mark six times in program history. The biggest crowd came on April 16, 2005 as the Hokies hosted NC State in front of 1,977 fans.

GREAT PLACE TO

2009 VIRGINIA TECH SOFTBALL

Virginia Tech’s softball program has not only taken its performance to a new level on the field, but in the classroom as well. The athletics department realizes that the academic progress of each student-athlete is a valued and vital part of developing successful individuals and teams. Student-athletes at Tech continue to excel off the field each year with the help of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS). Tech’s student-athlete graduation rate has risen significantly in recent years and was a school-best 76 percent for 2007. This marks the fourth time in the last six years that Tech’s student-athlete graduation rate has been 70 percent or better. In addition to posting impressive graduation figures, current Tech student-athletes are also performing well in the classroom as well. For the 2007 calendar year, 501 3.0 GPAs were earned by student-athletes, student trainers, student managers, cheerleaders and HighTechs.

LEARN

Jenna Rhodes is doublemajoring in psychology and sociology and was named to Tech’s All-Academic Team for softball.

Tech’s SAASS office is committed to providing fundamental and supplemental programming, consistent with university and NCAA policy, to enhancing each student-athlete’s educational experience. SAASS provides programming for student-athletes from their freshman year through graduation, including a comprehensive orientation to Tech, study hall, mentoring, tutoring, academic monitoring, academic recognition and eligibility education. In the 2006-07 academic year, the SAASS office moved to the West Side of Lane Stadium, where student-athletes have access to stateof-the-art technology, quiet study facilities, individualized tutorial rooms, and direct access to the SAASS staff. This complex is the focal point for the Athletics Department, both aesthetically and pragmatically, providing a centralized place for student-athlete services. The facility features: • More than 18,000 square feet of functional space • 10 staff offices • 18 private tutor rooms • State-of-the-art classroom • 36-station computer lab • Three reading/study rooms • Conference room • Reference library

Erin Ota works with Mike Swanhart in one of Tech’s many computer labs.

These spaces provide a variety of study environments conducive to the studentathletes’ success and are available between classes, after practice or in the evenings, with flexible hours tailored to make the most of a student-athlete’s limited time. Mike Swanhart handles the day-to-day academic needs of the softball team.

GREAT PLACE

GROW

Led by the Virginia Tech Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Hokie student-athletes volunteered countless hours in the local community last year. In addition, over 400 Virginia Tech student-athletes earned a 3.00 grade point average during one or both semesters in 2007. The accomplishments are even more amazing in the context of the 20072008 athletic seasons being some of the most successful in Virginia Tech history. The office is under the direction of Reyna Gilbert and Danny White. The Virginia Tech Athletics Office of Student Life programs and services are inspired from the NCAA/CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success) Life Skills Program. The program has been previously honored for its commitment to serving the good of the studentathletes by the Division I-A Athletic Director’s Association as a Program of Excellence. Virginia Tech student-athletes are involved more than ever in the local community. Having volunteered many hours in the schools, community groups and hospitals, the studentathletes are setting a high precedent for all involved with the program. Under the “Hokies with Heart” umbrella, each sports team has a community partner with which they volunteer their time and host a home game to honor the partnership program. This year, the softball team is partnered up with Prices Fork Elementary. The Office of Student Life also oversees the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which is a committee made up of studentathletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. The softball team’s representatives are Beth Walker and Whitney Davis.

PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL

CARE

The 4,300-square-foot Eddie Ferrell Memorial Training Room gives the training staff a centralized area to care for the needs of all Virginia Tech student-athletes. It is equipped with a new state-of-the-art X-ray system, a fluoroscopy unit and a minor procedure room. The training room also has offices for the staff, dozens of training tables, two cold tubs, whirlpools, an underwater treadmill, a Biodex System 3 and various other pieces of rehabilitation equipment and treatment modalities. Katie Baer, who is in her third season with the softball program, is a certified athletic trainer who attends all practices and games — home and away. She is assisted by several students and GAs to help give athletes the best possible care.

2009 VIRGINIA TECH SOFTBALL

The Sports Medicine Department at Virginia Tech is constantly evolving to incorporate new ideas utilizing state-of-the-art resources for the betterment of all Hokie student-athletes. The team of certified athletic trainers, orthopaedic surgeons, Board Certified primary care physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, sport psychologists, nutritionists, massage therapists and orthotists are available on site to manage the health care needs of Tech athletes. The staff continually looks for ways to enhance the services provided for their athletes as evidenced by their participation in local and national projects pertaining to related topics such as concussion management, prevention of antibiotic resistant types of staph infection (MRSA), high ankle sprains and collegiate health care management strategies.

BUILDING THE

MIND BODY &

One of the most important aspects of the Virginia Tech softball program is the area of Athletics Performance. Before the lights ever come on, before the first pitch is thrown and before the first game is played, the Hokies work on getting themselves physically and mentally prepared for the rigors of a four-month season. Thanks to the direction of Assistant Athletics Director for Athletic Performance Mike Gentry, the Virginia Tech strength and conditioning program is among the best in the nation. Terry Mitchell, who handles the strength and conditioning for Tech’s softball team, has experience in the Texas Rangers farm system. He graduated from Lee (Tenn.) College in 1994 and earned a master’s in health promotions from Tech in 2004.

&

Virginia Tech offers another important service to all of its student-athletes — sport psychology. Dr. Gary Bennett coordinates the sport psychology department, which offers psychological and performance enhancement services for student-athletes. Bennett also works closely with the Cook Counseling Center. Bennett meets with student-athletes on an individual basis for personal counseling and to discuss the mental aspects of the game. He also works on team building, communication and performance enhancement. The sport psychology department also offers an injury group to afford injured athletes the opportunity to meet with other injured athletes and talk about their recovery process. Injured athletes may also meet individually with the sport psychologists.

Eating healthy and choosing nutritious diets are important aspects of a Tech student-athlete’s life and that’s why in July 2002, the athletics department implemented the sports nutrition program. Amy Freel serves as the director. Freel works individually with student-athletes to provide them with information they need on their diet. She provides individual players with diet counseling on issues such as gaining lean muscle mass, losing body fat, and eating choices to improve performance. Also in July 2002, the Virginia Tech Athletics Department purchased the BodPod body composition system. Tech is one of a handful of college athletic departments using this type of technology. The BodPod is found in many professional training facilities, such as the NFL and Major League Baseball. It accurately measures body composition (percent of body fat, lean muscle mass and fat mass) through air displacement within five minutes.

has one of the strongest arms on the team and continues to improve at the plate. “We have a lot of experience and good speed at all three positions,” Brauns said. “We should have a solid year, defensively, in the outfield. All five of these players bring positives and it’s not a stretch to say this could be the best outfield in the program’s history if they all have the kind of year they’re capable of.”

THE BATTERY

Hokies Looking to Build on Momentum

After winning two consecutive ACC Championships and earning a berth in the 2008 Women’s College World Series, head coach Scot Thomas will have a lot of holes to fill and new faces will be stepping in to try and keep the momentum rolling for the program. Gone are four starters from last year’s squad, including the national player of the year, a three-year starter behind the plate and a versatile multi-year starter in the outfield. But with six bats returning from last year’s starting lineup at the WCWS and an influx of talented young players, the nucleus is still there for another run at the postseason.

INFIELD

First-team all-region honoree Charisse Mariconda returns for her senior year, as do two other starters from the infield – seniors Erin Ota and Beth Walker – making this a veteran group. Mariconda, who led the Hokies at the plate with a .340 average last year, is back as one of the best third basemen in the region. She is lightning quick at the hot corner and will be asked to step up her leadership this year. Backing her up will be walk-on Alicia Field, who saw action in 10 games last year and is solid in the field.

Erin Ota

Ota, who has started the past three seasons at second base, will get a look at shortstop this season. At just 5’2”, she doesn’t have the prototypical size for the position, but her reflexes and savvy make her a strong candidate for the spot. Freshman Kristen Froehlich will also work here and the two could swap at second base and shortstop until things are decided. Both will be in the lineup regardless. Walker and Kim Jalm are long-ball threats that will battle for the spot at first base, along with freshman Kristin Graham, who also pitches. Walker and Jalm are seniors who are looking to contribute in any way possible. “Our infield has some veterans with Charisse, Erin, Beth and Kim in there,” Thomas said. “We may be at some different spots, but I feel good about the game experience these kids have. They’ve played the game at the highest level and we’re blessed to have their skills behind such a young pitching staff.”

The main cogs in last year’s battery are gone and new pitching coach Barb Sherwood will be starting basically from scratch. Angela Tincher and Kelsey Hoffman threw and caught just about every pitch, respectively, down the stretch last year and now it will be up to a new cast to continue the excellence established by those two. Kenzie Roark leads the way in the circle. After a solid freshman year, but one in which she threw just 58.0 innings, she has bought into Sherwood’s philosophies and is coming off an excellent fall season. As a sophomore, she is the veteran of the group and will be counted on for strong innings this year. A pair of freshmen – Abbie Rexrode and Kristin Graham – will be the only other pitchers on the staff, as the Hokies will use a “by committee” approach this year. Rexrode is still adjusting to the college game, but has a good mix of pitches and will contribute this spring. Graham missed a good part of the fall with an injury, but is expected back. The Georgia product is a good complement to Roark and Rexrode and at 6-feet-tall, she can be an imposing presence in the circle. Heather Lowry will miss the season after having “Tommy John” surgery this past fall. “I’m excited because a lot of times when you have a new pitching staff, they are eager and hungry,” Sherwood said. “This group is exactly that and I think we can be pretty successful this year. All three of them continue to get better every day and if they continue to do that, we have a chance to surprise some people this year.”

OUTFIELD

Jessica Everhart

Five strong players make up the outfield for this year, which could end up being the strength of the Hokies. Jessica Everhart enters her fourth year as a starter, but will make the move to left field from center field. Walk-on Marra Hvozdovic was a pleasant surprise in the fall and will provide solid depth at all three positions. “With a lot of off-speed pitching for us this year, we think we’ll have a lot balls hit to left field and with Jess’ experience and skills, we feel she’ll be better utilized in left,” said associate head coach and outfield coach Al Brauns. Transfer Richelle McGarva enrolled at Tech in January after coming in from junior college and could be an impact player in center field. She has great speed and skills in the field, but also provides a good bat in the lineup. Jenna Rhodes will back up McGarva, but will be in the lineup once again as the designated player. She was a pain for the opposition on the base paths, stealing a school-record 41 bases last year while hitting .304. In right field, Whitney Davis had an excellent fall and continues to hold down that spot. She

Tech will rely on two catchers this year to handle the staff. Freshman Kelsey Hensel and junior Amber Walker will battle throughout the preseason and even throughout the year for playing time. “Both Amber and Kelsey are really hard workers and have great attitudes,” Sherwood said. “They do the extra things needed to make us better and they work well with the pitchers. It’ll be an open competition for the job and one of them is going to have to step up and take control.” Tech will play in several tournaments before jumping into ACC play come mid-March. The Hokies will open the season with stops in Chattanooga, Atlanta and Myrtle Beach before playing in the always-tough NFCA Leadoff Classic and USF Under Armour Invitational. Before the conference schedule kicks off, they will play

numerous 2008 NCAA Tournament teams such as Michigan, Alabama, USF, Lehigh, Tennessee Tech, Chattanooga, Missouri and DePaul. “This is a challenging schedule, but it’ll help us as the season goes along,” Thomas said. “We may take some lumps early, but I hope the early part of our season will make us better heading into the second half of the season. From there, I think the ACC is pretty wide open and with the tournament being single elimination this year, it’s anyone’s for the taking.” With a young staff replacing the national player of the year from 2008, the Tech offense will be called upon to score more runs this season and the defense will be important behind the pitchers. “I think from an offensive standpoint, people are going to be surprised,” Thomas said. “For one, we have some quality people who can put

some runs on the board. I think there will also be some more urgency for runs, which is going to help us. The past three or four years, the urgency hasn’t been there and we would sit on scoring a run or two and let Angela take it from there. “This is going to be a fun team to watch,” Thomas added. “The biggest thing we have to do is mentally stay tough. If a base hit gets through, we can’t get down on ourselves. With the veterans we have out there, we should be able to do that. But it’s going to be a fun game to watch. We may not see the strikeout totals we have in the past, but we’re going to be putting the bat on the ball better, we’re going to continue to be aggressive on the base paths, we’re going to have to field the ball well and we’re going to be doing some other things to make it an exciting game.”

in the state and region, but has put it on the national map as well. A 2008 Women’s College World Series appearance was the latest step as Thomas is perpetually looking to lead his team to new heights. Last season, with the best player in the country, he led the Hokies to new levels, culminating with a trip to Oklahoma City for the WCWS. After finishing second in the regular season, the Hokies rolled through the ACC Tournament for the second time in a row, guaranteeing them their fourth-straight NCAA Regional appearance. Tech finally got over the hump and won its Regional and then went to Ann Arbor and defeated No. 4 seed Michigan twice on the final day to seal the trip to the biggest stage in college softball. A 49-19 record, as well as the National Player of the Year in Angela Tincher, secured a special place in the history of Hokie softball. He also led his team to a historic upset of the U.S. National Team, breaking the Red, White & Blue’s 185-game, preOlympic exhibition tour winning streak with a 1-0 win. This is the same program that had won the previous three Olympic gold medals in the sport and took silver in Beijing. Thomas and his staff were honored for the second-straight year as the Northeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year for the way they led the team in 2008.

Anyone trying to understand the reason behind Virginia Tech’s unprecedented success on the softball diamond doesn’t have to look any further than head coach Scot Thomas. Since taking the job on July 5, 1995, Thomas has personally handled every element of building the program from buying the first pieces of equipment, to hiring the assistants and recruiting the players. The results are nothing short of phenomenal. Since the first season Tech fielded a softball team in 1996, Thomas has had 10 winning seasons in 13 campaigns, has led the Hokies to four NCAA appearances, two ACC titles and last year took Tech to the biggest show in college softball. Thomas grew up in Blacksburg where he dreamed of one day becoming a coach at Tech. Having faithfully watched Hokie athletics his entire life, along with having parents who worked at Virginia Tech, he understood the dedication to excellence and the commitment to quality the University demanded, and he was a perfect match for the program’s philosophy. Thomas dreamed of building a nationally recognized program from the beginning. People warned him that it would take years for Virginia Tech to become a player in the region, not to mention on the national scene. Now entering his 14th season with nearly 500 wins, Thomas has positioned Hokie softball as one of the most respected Scot Thomas and his wife, Carolyn, with Eliza and Andrew. programs, not only

In 2007, he saw his team post 49 wins, including the ACC’s regular season and conference tournament championships. Those titles were the first in the program’s history and helped him earn ACC Coach of the Year honors. He also picked up his 400th career win, a 3-0 victory over Stetson, and saw his team finish ranked 14th in the country. Additionally, Thomas — along with his three assistants — were named the Northeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the NFCA. In 2006, the Hokies won 39 games and were a No. 2 seed at the Knoxville Regional, despite starting seven sophomores or freshmen down the stretch. He helped coach Tech’s first softball All-American, as well as five all-region, four all-conference and seven all-state selections. In 2005, Tech picked up 44 wins and was selected to the NCAA Tournament, a first in the program’s history. After finishing seventh in the conference, the Hokies made a dramatic run to the championship game to secure the bid. Three players earned all-region honors

and over two dozen school records were broken by either the team or individuals. In 2004, he led Tech to its sixth winning season while picking up his 300th win. Three players earned All-BIG EAST honors while two took home all-region accolades as Tech posted a 36-23 record. Thomas became Tech’s first head softball coach when he was hired on July 7, 1995. Since then, he has recorded 483 wins, averaged 37 wins per season and made the conference tournament championship game seven times. The Hokies finished a spectacular 1999 season ranked 25th in the nation with a 5416 record. In just its fourth year as a varsity sport, the team placed second at the A-10 tournament, falling to Massachusetts for the second year in a row. For his team’s play, Thomas was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. Tech’s hopes for a regional at-large bid were denied, but it did receive the national attention it had been working for. An upset of No. 4 Michigan highlighted the season. Tech finished the year undefeated at home and 14-2 in Atlantic 10 play, losing only to UMass. The Hokies had the third-longest winning streak in the nation at 26, and at one point won 35 of 36 games. In 2000, his first recruiting class left its mark on the program as the Hokies went 41-22 and finished second in the A-10 Tournament. Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and two-time GTE National First-Team Academic All-American Michelle Meadows led the team both on the field and off. In 2002, Thomas led the Hokies to their third 40-win season and a runner-up finish at the BIG EAST Softball Championship. While success on the field is important, Thomas also places a strong emphasis on success in the classroom. In 13 seasons, he has had four players earn Academic All-America honors. Michelle Johnson made the 1998 second-team squad while Meadows was a three-time selection, the last two being

COACH SCOT THOMAS’ PHILOSOPHIES Priorities: In order to fit into the picture at Virginia Tech, you must have your priorities in line. Academics take precedence over athletics. Our motto is: “In order to take care of business on the field, you must first take care of business off the field.” On the other hand, we stress that softball should not suffer for academics either. Being able to manage time wisely and efficiently is the key to the success of balancing academics with athletics at Virginia Tech. Recruiting: It is our goal to fill the recruiting needs of our program with mature, self-driven/ motivated student-athletes along with the necessary talent to help our team be successful in the Atlantic Coast Conference and on a national level. Recruiting is not a perfect science, however being a state university, we try our best to sign quality players from the state of Virginia first, then broaden our opportunities in other areas of the country and Canada. Players should possess the selflessness to fit into the team concept and the inner drive that guides them to be CHAMPIONS. Playing the game: Teams that are fundamentally sound are always successful. We try to emulate that style on a game-by-game basis, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, we have tended to be a program that is fundamentally sound as well. We have shown a knack for hitting the ball for power, both home run and gap power. This year, we have added some speed and hope to provide a more balanced attack. Smart, yet aggressive is our style of play. Blacksburg and Virginia Tech: As a native of Blacksburg, I have grown to appreciate this special place as I have gotten older and I always look forward to showing it off to new recruits. The small town atmosphere with the major university flair provides a unique academic and social environment. The history and traditions of this great institution make it one of a kind and one that I am very proud to be a part of. I still get chills during the Homecoming Parade when the Alumni Highty-Tighties march through downtown playing TECH TRIUMPH! Not many people can say they have reached their final destination, but I feel very lucky to be at Virginia Tech and plan on being here for the duration of my coaching career. I am fortunate to be able to raise my children in the same great environment that my wife and I grew up in, here in Blacksburg. on the first team. Following the 2002 season, Ashlee Dobbe earned first-team honors and Angela Tincher was a three-time Academic All-American, including Academic All-America of the Year honors in 2008. Those classroom honors went along with three NFCA/Louisville Slugger All-America honors, including the National Player of the Year honor in 2008. In the 1999-2000 season, the Hokies finished tied for ninth in the nation for team grade point average (3.28). Respected by many,

Coach Scot Thomas at a Women’s College World Series media conference last season.

Thomas has been named the Virginia State Coach of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) a record five times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2008). He has had 23 different players named to the all-state team 46 different times, including at least three on every team in 10 of the last 11 seasons. Two players have earned state player of the year honors and one was named rookie of the year, while Tincher was named the pitcher of the year three times. Thomas graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1991 with a bachelor’s in physical education. He is on the Louisville Slugger advisory staff for the 13th straight year. He was also selected to be the head coach of a group of local collegiate all-stars who took on the U.S. Olympic Softball Team in Salem, Va., in the summer of 2004 and did so again in the summer of 2008. Thomas was also an active ballplayer in the fastpitch world, playing in the ASA Men’s B Nationals in 2003 and the NSA World Series in 2004 and 2005. Thomas graduated from Blacksburg High where he was a member of the football and baseball teams. He is married to the former Carolyn Croy, a Tech graduate from Blacksburg. His mother, Judy Ridinger, has worked at Virginia Tech for over 40 years, and his late stepfather, Jack Ridinger, was captain of the Virginia Tech Police Department. BRAUNS ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH

AL BRAUNS 11th Season • Penn State (1973) • Uniontown, Pa.

2009 VIRGINIA TECH SOFTBALL

Al Brauns enters his 11th year on the Tech softball staff and his first as the associate head coach. His responsibilities include working primarily with the outfielders, as well as helping with the infielders and hitters, and he has been an integral part of the staff that has earned back-to-back NFCA Northeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors. A favorite among current and past players, Brauns is also in charge of field maintenance, travel, equipment and has a heavy hand in recruiting. Virginia Tech’s summer softball camps, which have seen a huge spike in attendance over the past few years, is also run by the long-time assistant coach. Brauns is a familiar face in Hokie sports, holding a position with the Virginia Tech athletics department for three years prior to joining the softball staff. Under his direction, numerous players have earned all-state, all-conference and all-region honors. Bronwyn Blair, a four-year starter in centerfield, was drafted by the Tampa Bay FireStix of the WPSL in 2001. In 2006, he coached Kelly Brown to her third AllNortheast Region squad and freshman Jessica Everhart to All-ACC and all-region honors. That year, the outfield had a fielding percentage of .952, recording seven outfield assists and committing just six errors all year. Everhart led the way with four assists.

In 2007, he showed his versatility by taking over the infielders early on before returning to his outfielders late in the season. As a team, the Hokies had a fielding percentage of .966 with one of the fewest error totals in program history. Brauns also serves as the first-base coach and is the right-hand man of head coach Scot Thomas. Last summer, he was rewarded for his loyalty and work by being named the associate head coach as the top assistant on the staff. A tireless worker on the recruiting trail, he played a big role in identifying current and past Hokies like Charisse Mariconda early on in the process as players who could make an impact on the Virginia Tech program. Brauns, a Vietnam War veteran, started playing fastpitch in the 1960s and finished his career playing with a men’s major team from 1970-74. In the summer of 2003, he coached a men’s fastpitch team to a 17th-place national tournament finish. Originally from Uniontown, Pa., Brauns graduated from Penn State in 1973 with a degree in criminology. Brauns and his wife, Michelle, have one child, Adam, who is 16 years old. He also has two other sons, Eric, 40, and Jason, 34. He has two grandchildren, Alaina and Allison.

SHERWOOD ASSISTANT COACH

BARB SHERWOOD First Season • Troy (1999) • Pensacola, Fla.

Assistant coach Barb Sherwood makes the move north, but stays in the Atlantic Coast Conference as she joins the Hokie coaching staff as the pitching coach. Sherwood spent last season in Tallahassee serving as the pitching and catching coach at Florida State University, but after long-time head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf retired following the season, she became a top candidate for Tech’s open position on the staff. She will also work with the catchers and focus heavily on recruiting. Prior to her season at FSU, the Pensacola, Fla., native spent two seasons with the University of Wisconsin as an assistant and serving as the pitching and catching coach. Sherwood began her coaching career at Troy University in 1998 as a student assistant coach, but quickly moved to the graduate assistant level the following year. Upon receiving her Master’s degree in education in 2000, the former four-year letterwinning catcher and team captain was named the top assistant at her alma mater. Sherwood also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Trojans, adding top players such as Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year Jocelyn McCallum and four-year Canadian National Team catcher Tamra Howren. McCallum continues to hold the single-season strikeout record at Troy, while Howren led the Trojans in 11 categories, including batting average (.342), in 2004. During the 2005 season, Sherwood’s pitchers achieved a notable 1.45 ERA with two individuals notching 20 wins. That year, both pitchers were named all-conference performers as well.

World Series Appearance Highlights Incredible Campaign

Most expected Tech to just be another mild hurdle in the USA’s “Bound 4 Beijing” Tour as the team hadn’t lost a pre-Olympic exhibition game in over a decade. In fact, the Red, White & Blue dispatched of DePaul 23-0 as the Hokies watched as they warmed up, leaving many to wonder how bad Tech would get dismantled. But in one of the biggest upsets in softball history, the Virginia Tech softball team, behind a no-hit performance from Angela Tincher, defeated the U.S. National Softball Team, 1-0 at Hall of Fame Stadium. The Hokies got a run in the second inning and that would prove to be enough. Catcher Kelsey Hoffman led off the inning with a double to the right-center gap and was pinch ran for by Anna Zitt. Zitt moved to third on an illegal pitch by USA pitcher Jennie Finch and scored on a bloop two-out single by Caroline Stolle. The loss snapped a 185-game pre-Olympic exhibition tour winning streak dating back to 1996. During that span, the U.S. team outscored opponents 1,475-24. This was the same U.S.A. team that had won the past three Olympic gold medals and the same team that went on to win the rest of its games on the Tour and then went on to win the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics last summer. After the euphoria and media frenzy calmed down, the Hokies won an ACC series at Maryland, swept Virginia and Boston College and took two from Florida State. The only series loss was against North Carolina, giving the Hokies a 16-5 overall conference mark and putting them as the No. 2 seed at the ACC Tournament. Rain forced major changes to the tournament after day one. In the first game, Tech rallied to beat seventh-seeded Maryland, 7-4. After the tournament was converted to singleelimination because of the weather, Tech beat Florida State behind a no-hitter from Tincher, and then beat NC State 2-0 for the title. Despite being ranked in the top 20, Tech was given a No. 2 seed and sent to Knoxville once again for its Regional. It didn’t matter this time as the Hokies were focussed and ready to take the next step. After beating Louisville 1-0 in 10 innings on a walk-off home run by Hall, the Hokies had to meet up with their old nemesis, Tennessee. Stolle made sure there was no repeat performance as she hit a grand slam to lift Tech

2009 VIRGINIA TECH SOFTBALL

The scoreboard read a 2-0, nine-inning loss to No. 1 Florida, but that was just the last piece in an amazing puzzle that stretched over a four-month span that will be remembered as one of the greatest runs not only in program history, but in Tech athletics. There are almost too many highlights to mention on one page for a team that went further than any other had in the program’s 13-year history. The season saw the Hokies beat the best team in the world in an upset that sent shock waves around the country. The season saw Tech win its secondstraight ACC Tournament title. The season saw Tech battle back at both the Regionals and Super Regionals to earn a trip to the Women’s College World Series. And the season saw one if its own crowned as the best player in the country. 2008: what a ride it was! The season started with mixed results as the Hokies went 3-2 at the Florida International Tournament, 3-1 at the Green & White Classic and 3-1 at the Hokies United Memorial Tournament. With a 9-4 record and hanging on in the national polls, the Hokies headed out west for their toughest Spring Break trip in program history. At the Hillenbrand Invitational, Tech started 3-0, beating Illinois-Chicago, New Mexico State and Iowa State. In the nightcap of night two, the Hokies went toe-to-toe with two-time defending national champion Arizona on its home turf. Although Tech lost in an epic 4-3, 12-inning game in which the two starting pitchers combined for an NCAA-record 42 strikeouts, the Hokies were starting to believe in themselves. After a weekend in Arizona, the team headed to Long Beach, Calif., for the Long Beach State Invitational. Tech dropped a tough 1-0 contest to No. 2 UCLA, but rebounded to beat Rutgers 9-0. Then, in a game that possibly started to turn the tide on the season, Tech beat No. 8 Northwestern 1-0 in eight innings. Misty Hall’s suicide squeeze bunt in the eighth allowed Jessica Everhart to score, setting off a wild celebration from the Hokie faithful. Tech opened its ACC season with a series win over Georgia Tech and then beat No. 11 Houston, 1-0, at home on Beth Walker’s double late in the game. After a sweep at NC State, the Hokies took a break for a mid-week exhibition contest against the U.S. National Team in Oklahoma City.

“I’m extremely proud of this team and how well they represented the University,” head coach Scot Thomas said at the press conference after Tech was eliminated from the WCWS. “We don’t have any team national championship banners at Tech, but there are certain teams that are always held in high regard, like the 1973 NIT championship men’s basketball team and the football team that played for the title in 2000. I think this team right here will go down as one of the greatest in Virginia Tech history, and I’m proud to be associated with these ladies.” Tincher wrapped up her illustrious career as the USA Softball National Player of the Year, the Honda Award winner for softball as the national player of the year, a three-time All-American, the Academic All-American of the Year for softball, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and just about every other award. She finished with 2,149 career strikeouts, the third-highest total in NCAA history and set dozens of school and conference records. She was the No. 3 overall draft pick of the NPF’s Akron Racers and left Tech as the most decorated female athlete in school history.

2008 REVIEW — Continued from previous page to a 4-0 win. On Sunday, the Hokies fell in the first game to the Lady Vols and were trailing 1-0 in the second game before a rain delay halted play. After the break, Hall hit a tworun home run and Tech never looked back, winning 4-2. The win was sweet, but the next stop was even more daunting as the Hokies had to travel to Ann Arbor to take on fourthseeded Michigan in the Super Regionals. After dropping the first game 1-0, Tech came back on Sunday to win game two, 1-0, to force a deciding final game. Whitney Davis hit her first collegiate home run and the runs kept coming as the Hokies upset the Wolverines 6-1 to clinch a berth in the Women’s College World Series — a first for the program. While the stay was short (a 1-0 loss to No. 5 Texas A&M and a 2-0, nine-inning loss to No. 1 Florida), the memories will last forever for this over-achieving bunch who took Tech fans on a wild ride to the sport’s biggest stage.

“I don’t think I could’ve asked for much more,” Tincher said while reflecting on her career. “The seniors and I have gotten really close, and I had a great time — not just with softball, but with the University and everything. We’ve had a lot of fun getting here to the World Series. Ending my career here — I wish we would’ve won — but I don’t think I could’ve asked for too much more than that.” Other team members were also rewarded for their seasons. Charisse Mariconda and Jenna Rhodes were named all-region while the two, along with Hoffman, were named all-conference. Mariconda, Rhodes, Hoffman and Erin Ota were named all-state and Tincher was named to all of these teams, along to the WCWS All-Tournament squad. Thomas and his assistants were named the NFCA Northeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year for the second year in a row and the team finished eighth in both major polls. The team, which finished 49-19, also was given the ACC’s Sportsmanship Award.

VIRGINIA TECH’S ALL-AMERICAN HONOREE

Angela Tincher 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA First-Team All-American 2007 Louisville Slugger/NFCA First-Team All-American 2006 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Second-Team All-American Angela Tincher concluded her phenomenal softball career at Virginia Tech in 2008 by helping lead the Hokies to their first appearance in the Women’s College World Series and a No. 8 national ranking. As a senior, she hit the grand slam of national awards, winning the USA Softball National Player of the Year Award, the Honda Award for National Softball Player of the Year, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and was also named the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America of the Year for softball. Tincher was one of five finalists for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which is given to the top female athlete in the NCAA, won the Mary Garber Award as the ACC’s Female Athlete of the Year, won an NCAA Top VIII Award and was also one of three finalists for an ESPY as Female College Athlete of the Year. The Eagle Rock, Va., native led the Hokies to an ACC title for the second year in a row, a Regional title, a Super Regional crown and to Oklahoma City for the WCWS. Tincher no-hit the U.S. Olympic Team in Tech’s 1-0 victory, helping break the Red, White & Blue’s 185-game exhibition winning streak. She was also the No. 3 overall draft pick of the National Pro Fastpitch League, marking the highest any Tech female has been drafted in a professional sport. As a senior, she led the nation in earned run average (ERA) for the secondstraight year and also led the country in strikeouts. She finished her career with a 123-35 record, a 0.78 ERA and 2,149 strikeouts – the third most in NCAA history of softball at any level. She was a three-time All-American as well as a three-time Academic All-American and is the most-honored female athlete in school history. Tincher had her number retired in a ceremony before Tech’s home football game against Georgia Tech on Sept. 13, 2008, becoming the first softball player to earn this honor. No player will ever wear No. 1 again in Tech softball history.

2009 VIRGINIA TECH SOFTBALL

THE TRADITION

Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 56th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 109 national championships, including 57 in women’s competition and 52 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 145 times in men’s competition and 92 times in women’s action. The success of softball in the ACC has increased over the years since the conference began sponsoring the sport in 1992. The league has produced 48 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Americans, including Jessica van der Linden of Florida State and Virginia Tech’s Angela Tincher. Van der Linden became the league’s first USA Softball National Player of the Year and Honda Award winner in softball in 2004. In 2008, Tincher was also USA Softball National Player of the Year and received the Honda Award for softball. In addition, the ACC has had 185 studentathletes named NFCA All-Region. The ACC can also measure its achievements in the postseason, as the conference has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament over the past several years. In 2008, the league’s presence in the national event was felt as the ACC put four teams in the Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. Virginia Tech reached its first College World Series and the fifth trip to Oklahoma City for a league team. In all, ACC schools have combined for 45 all-time appearances in the NCAA Tournament, with 30 of those coming since the year 2000. Since joining the ACC in 1991, Florida State has established itself as one of the top softball programs in the country. The Seminoles have appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 21 of the last 23 years. Florida State also possesses College World Series experience, having made four of its seven appearances as a member of the ACC. FSU is among an elite group of schools in the sport, as the Seminoles are one of five programs to have made four consecutive trips to the WCWS. In all, the Seminoles have advanced to the WCWS seven times since 1987, and twice in the last seven seasons. Over the years, ACC softball has found similar success in the classroom. Over 20 student-athletes have been selected as an NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete, while several others have been tabbed NFCA Academic All-Americans or ESPN The Magazine (formerly Verizon) Academic All-Americans. In 2008, two ACC student athletes were named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans for the second consecutive season. Virginia Tech’s Tincher became the first ACC softball player to earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America of the Year honors in 2008. Seven more student-athletes were selected to either the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first- or second-teams. In its history, the conference has placed 61 student athletes on the Academic All-District Teams.

2007-2008 IN REVIEW

The 2007-08 academic year saw league teams capturing four national team titles and 12 individual NCAA crowns. In all, the ACC has won 43 national team titles over the last 12 years. The ACC has won two or more NCAA titles in 26 of the past 28 years. A total of 140 ACC teams placed in NCAA post-season competition in 2007-08. League teams compiled a 119-69 (.633) mark against nonconference opponents in NCAA championship competition. In addition, the ACC had 154 student-athletes earn first team All-America honors this past year. Overall, the league had 258 first, second or third team AllAmericans. In addition, the ACC produced 10 national Players of the Year and five national Coach of the Year honorees. ACC teams won four national championships last year — Boston College won in ice hockey, Florida State won men’s track & field and North Carolina won in field hockey and women’s soccer.

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The conference will conduct championship competition in 25 sports during the 2008-09 academic year - 12 for men and 13 for women. The first ACC championship was held in swimming on February 25, 1954. The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or tennis during the first year. The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, wrestling, baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in 1981. Women’s sports were initiated in 1977 with the first championship meet being held in tennis at Wake Forest University. Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, field hockey, soccer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing, while volleyball determines its champion in regular season play.

A HISTORY

The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws. The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became officially the Atlantic Coast Conference. Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline. Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200.00 to pay for conference expenses. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation. The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964. The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University. The conference expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting July 1, 2005.
