Former Hokie swimmer Kaan Tayla, the 2008 ACC champion in the men’s 50- and 100-freestyle, was named to the Turkish Olympic Swimming and Diving team and competed in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. Tayla was the 2007 Turkish National Champion in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events.

Jessica Botzum departed Blacksburg as the most decorated swimmer in the program’s history for her effort not only in the pool, but also in the classroom. An Academic AllAmerican and recipient of an Atlantic Coast Conference postgraduate scholarship, she earned All-America status three times in the 200 breaststroke (2005, 2007-08) and twice in the 100 breaststroke (2007, ‘08). She also earned AllAmerica honorable mention status once in the 200 breaststroke (2006), the 200 medley relay (2008) and the 400 medley relay (2008).

Tech Facilities

War memorial pool War Memorial Pool, located just off the campus Drill Field in War Memorial Gym, is Virginia Tech’s swimming and diving facility. The complex includes a 25-yard pool with eight lanes and a diving well. The movable bulkhead which separates the pool from the diving well can be adjusted to lengthen the pool to 25 meters. Complete with underwater windows and sound system, the facility is also equipped with the Colorado Electronic Timing System and scoreboard. Two years ago, a 12-line readout scoreboard was installed for swimming, as well as a three-line scoreboard for diving. The diving well is made up of two one-meter boards, a three-meter board and a five-meter platform. The pool has served as the site for two Virginia State Championship meets and one Metro Conference Championship. War Memorial Gym itself houses numerous other facilities including saunas, weight rooms, racquetball courts and six basketball courts. The Hokies also have the use of other equipment such as power-racks for strength swimming and VASA trainers, VASA climbers and bicycles for dry land.

Located in War Memorial Hall, Virginia Tech’s swimming pool and diving area provide an outstanding venue for competition.

2008-09 Men’s Outlook

New Additions Coupled With Veteran Leadership Look To Make Waves Two of the most heralded swimmers for the H2Okies have stepped off the blocks, along with three others walking away from the pool from last season’s 12-win squad. Former Tech swimmers Scott Beard, a three-time 100 fly champion, and Kaan Tayla, the 2008 ACC Champion in the 50- and 100-meter free races and a 2008 Olympian for the Turkish national team, will leave a void that head coach Ned Skinner and his staff will have the challenge of trying to fill. With 19 returnees and 12 newcomers, Skinner will look to better last season’s fifth place finish at the Atlantic Coast Conference championships.

Sprint

Beard and Tayla became great swimmers for Skinner in their four years of competition in Blacksburg and will be considerably missed for their abilities as leaders and as performers in the sprint free events. Tech will rely on the senior leadership of Ian deToll to carry the load this season. DeToll, who played a key role for the relay teams, scored in the top-25 for Tech at the ACC Championships in the 100 free competition. Meanwhile, sophomores Stephen Hawkins and Zach Holmes will both compete in the 50 free and Richard Ulatowski, who raced in the 100 and 200 free events at the ACC meet, will compete in the 50 and 100 races this season.

Freestyle

Senior Ben Miller and junior Griffin Lutterbein head the group of freestyle swimmers for the H2Okies. Miller, who served as a team captain last season and garnered the team’s annual Coaches’ Award will be looked upon to lead an inexperienced group throughout its grueling schedule and at the championship meets. Lutterbein, who holds the 1000 and 1650 H2Okie records, continues to better his performance each time he hits the water. Fellow junior Chip Hughes will race in the 200 free while sophomore Bo Farr, who placed in the top-25 in the 200 free for the H2Okies at the ACC championships, will be looked upon to score at championship events this season. Skinner reloaded his freestyle team with five freshmen that bring their talents to Blacksburg this season. Turkey native Caglar Gokbulut and freshman Phillip LaRosa rank in the top-10 among freestyle swimmers across the country, while Justin Litz, Blake Trabuchi-Downey and Bryan Uncur are milers that will compete in multiple ways for the H2Okies.

6

Mikey McDonald

Individual Medley

Senior James Aitken will head a young individual medley group when Tech takes the pool this season. Aitken, a two-time letterman, took home a top-20 finish at the Nike Cup in the 200 IM. Junior Scott Harkins will take part in the 200 and 400 IM. A group of three sophomores; Mark Greenberg, Carter Moore and Trey Stewart; will be relied upon to contribute their abilities for Tech. Greenberg and Moore will swim in both the 200 and 400 IM races. Stewart, who took home the teams’ Rookie of the Year award and races in fly events, will also race in the 200 and 400 IM competitions. With the addition of freshmen Nevin Cook, Dan Flynn, and Justin Litz, Tech adds three talented individuals eager to make some waves this season.

Backstroke

The departure of Beard leaves Tech with a young squad. Rogers is the most experienced swimmer of the five returnees. Competing in the 100 back, Rogers will be asked to score during the championship events this season. Francis, Hawkins, Holmes and Stewart, all sophomores, continue to develop their talents, as all played key roles in the H2Okies’ 12 wins last season. Tech added freshman Charlie Higgins, a highly sought after recruit, along with sophomore transfer Nick Giometti to make an immediate impact racing for the Maroon and Orange.

Butterfly

With seven flyers welcomed back and three new faces, the H2Okies possess a deep core of talent. Led by deToll, who competes in the 100 butterfly, and Riley, a 100 and 200 butterfly participant, will be called upon to pick up the scoring void left by Beard and Tayla. Rogers and sophomores Farr, Greenberg, Hawkins and Stewart will contribute this season in the event. Meanwhile, freshmen Matthew Baumler, Higgins and Trabuchi-Downey look to break out of the blocks early this season in hopes of scoring at the ACC championships in February.

Breaststroke

Two juniors, Harkins and Jonathan Huss, a sophomore Moore and a freshman Cook will compete for the H2Okies this season in breaststroke action. Harkins recorded a top-20 finish in the 100 at the conference meet, while Huss scored 12th

in the 100 breaststroke at the championships and recorded his first points as a Tech racer. Moore and Cook add depth and will contribute in both events.

Diving

After posting the best performance of any diver in Virginia Tech’s history, junior Mikey McDonald will look to add to his impressive portfolio. McDonald, the first H2Okie diver, male or female, to score at the NCAA Championships in the platform and springboard events, placed third in the onemeter and platform events and captured a fourth place finish in the three-meter event at the ACC Championships. Under the guidance of head diving coach Ron Piemonte, sophomore Daniel Martin and freshmen Michael Cilimberg and Trevor Michalak will look to score at meets throughout the season as well as at the ACC Championships.

Experienced Cast Guides H2Okies To New Heights

Sara Smith

With the departures of five former H2Okies, including two-time ACC women’s swimmer of the year Jessica Botzum, head coach Ned Skinner and his staff will have some large shoes to fill this season when Tech takes to the pool. The Tech women return 22 swimmers and divers for the 200809 season, while welcoming eight newcomers to Blacksburg. Last season the H2Okies posted their third straight fourth-place finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference. In his 11th year at the helm, Skinner will look to better his team’s performance this year, relying on veteran swimmers and a talented group of newcomers.

records in the 50, 100 and 200 free events. Fellow seniors Jordan McHorney and Megan Newell bring a wealth of experience and success to a deep group of sprinters. McHorney will compete in the 50 and 100 free races while Newell, who competes in the fly events for Tech, will look to score in the 50 free for Tech this season. Meanwhile, junior Sarah Ameen, sophomores Morgan Allen, Steffi Drechsel and Kaleigh Gomes are among the other returnees for the H2Okies that scored in contests throughout last season. Newcomer Emily Ferguson has shown great potential in training sessions and will be called upon throughout the 2008-09 meets.

Lauren Haley all will compete in backstroke action. After having a stellar junior campaign, placing third at the Nike Cup, McHorney is a veteran swimmer that can score at the championship events. Ameen, who competes in the 50, 100 and 200 back races, and deMarrais, the 200 back record holder for the H2Okies, will be called upon to exceed last season’s marks for Tech. Shapiro, who suffered an early season injury in the 2007-08 season, is ready for a breakout season for the H2Okies. Suhr and Haley add depth to a deep core of swimmers.

Sprint

Freestyle

Two seniors, Newell and Smith, and a junior, Abby Barney, look to make a splash this year for the H2Okies. Newell, who set records in the 100 and 200 fly races at the NCAA Championships, and Smith, arguably the fastest swimmer in the ACC, plan to score at a high level throughout the season and ACC meets. Barney will compete in both the 100 and 200 fly events for Tech this season.

Tech’s two-time All-American swimmer, senior Sara Smith, will look to pick up where she left off last year in leading the H2Okies this season. Smith proved to be the fastest swimmer in the ACC last season capturing both the 50 and 100 free titles while assisting in the 200 medley relay team in its first place finish while holding H2Okie

Luttermoser will focus her talents in the 200 and 500 free races with Jones competing in 1000 and 1650 free events. Meanwhile, junior Kelly deMarrais, and sophomores Lauren Ritter and Emily Tipton round out the returnees for Tech. Newcomers Jace Howanitz, Katie Priess and Alexandra Tomasky will look to compete for Tech in the upcoming meets this season. The three freshmen will add depth to the event in 2008-09.

Individual Medley

A trio of seniors that include Claire Dickey, Luttermoser and Smith, along with junior Suhr, are an experienced group of medley swimmers that will look to take the H2Okies to new heights this year. Dickey, Tech’s defending Skelton Award winner, will race in the 200 IM for the Hokies, while Luttermoser, who is Tech’s record holder in the 400 IM, will look to score in the 200 and 400 IM events. Smith, the defending 2007-08 ACC Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, will compete in the 200 IM and is the War Memorial Pool record holder in the event. After placing in the top-25 at the ACC Championships, Suhr will look to better her performance in the 200 IM event. Skinner and the H2Okies welcome Paige Aryes, Howanitz, Priess and Emily Winland. Howanitz is fresh off the Olympic Trials and will be called upon to score at the ACC and NCAA championships.

Breaststroke

With the departure of Tech’s most celebrated swimmer, Jessica Botzum, a two-time ACC swimmer of the year and a three-time All-America honoree, the H2Okies will rely on junior Jessica Earl and sophomore Sarah Losinger to lead an inexperienced group of swimmers this season. Earl scored her first career points at the ACC Championships and will compete in the 100 and 200 breast events this season, while Losinger, the only other returning swimmer, will compete in both events this season. A trio of new faces — Ayres, Priess and Winland — will be called upon to handle a heavy load for the Tech breaststroke squad.

Divers

Sophomore Sara Milton leads the H2Okie divers this season. Milton, one of the team’s 2007-08 Rookies of the Year, set a school record in the threemeter event last year. Freshman Cara Murnan comes to Tech with an impressive resume in the platform and springboard events. Meanwhile, junior Julia Bradford has displayed a great sense of maturity in her diving and enters her third season with the H2Okies. Freshman Natalie West, who is coming off knee surgery, could be a top scorer for Tech, while classmate Andrea Sawchuck will add to the depth for the H2Okies in 2008-09.

The Coaching Staff

Ned Skinner Head Coach 11th Season • Louisiana State (‘89) The 2008-09 season marks the 11th year at the helm of the Virginia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams for head coach Ned Skinner. The men’s squad has registered a 63-43 record during his tenure, while the women have posted an 84-27 mark. Skinner brings back a talented group that has continued to impress in their four years competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Last season both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams made their mark in Blacksburg. Skinner and his staff sent six individual swimmers to the NCAA Championships, two of whom received All-America awards, and three of whom were All-America honorable mention recipients. Season in Review

Women Crack Top 25 in Consecutive Seasons; Mikey McDonald Highlights Male Competitors A Record Year to Remember

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had memorable seasons that included two ACC annual honors, six individual NCAA Championship invitations, two All-America awards, three individual All-America honorable mention accolades, two relay honorable mentions and Tech’s first-ever victory at the prestigious Nike Cup. Each team also set a school record for wins in a season, as the men finished with 12, two more than the previous record set in 1998 and 2007, while the women topped the 1998 record of 12 by three. The men combined to break 14 individual and five relay school records, while the women also set two ACC records. The Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association gave the ladies a No. 25 ranking at the end of the season, while the men took No. 28.

NCAA Championships

Swimmers Jessica Botzum, Jordan McHorney, Megan Newell, Sara Smith and Kaan Tayla, along with diver Mikey McDonald, all had strong performances at the NCAAs with 2008 ACC Swimmer of the Year Botzum earning AllAmerica honors in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke to conclude her career. She also helped the other women earn top-16 results in the 200 and 400 medley relays, while 2008 ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Smith scored a point by taking 16th in the 50 free. McDonald became the first-ever diver to score points, finishing 11th in the three-meter and platform. Tayla had a tough break in the 50 free as he tied another swimmer for the last finals spot, eventually losing the tie breaker in the second swim-off.

ACC Men’s Championships

Though the men’s fifth-place result did not match last year’s fourth-place finish, Tech concluded the meet with four titles, the mostever captured at one ACC Championship. Tech also had top-three finishes in the 100 back, 400 and 800 free relay, platform diving event and the one-meter diving event. Tayla won both the 50 and 100 free, while Scott Beard became the first swimmer since 1998 to three-peat as the 100 fly champion. The two men, along with Jake Bova and Stephen Hawkins, captured the 200 free relay title, the only relay event team champion Virginia did not win. McDonald became the first Tech diver to earn All-ACC honors with his performance.

ACC Women’s Championships

Before the meet, the women had won a total of four ACC titles the past three seasons. They left this year with five as Smith, like Tayla, won both the 50 and 100 free, while Botzum earned her first 100 breast title and second 200 breast win. The two women, along with McHorney and Newell, also captured the 200 medley relay for the women’s first career ACC relay victory. Smith added more points by medaling in the 100 fly with a third-place finish as Tech took fourth for the third-straight year.

Nike Cup Victory

The men and women led the field with a combined 1,899 points, with host North Carolina in second at 1,773. Beard earned ACC Performer of the Week honors as he willed the men to Tech’s first career team victory at the meet by winning the 100 fly, finishing second in the 100 back, placing third in the 100 free and taking 10th in the 200 IM. He — along with Tayla, Bova, deToll and Scott Harkins — combined to win four of the five relay events, only losing out in the 800

free relay. Trey Stewart and McDonald captured the 200 fly and one-meter titles, respectively. On the women’s side, Botzum led the charge to second-place with wins in the 200 IM, 100 breast and 200 breast. She also helped McHorney, Smith and Newell win the 200 and 400 medley relays, while Newell also took the 100 fly title.

Taming the Wildcats

Tech’s most impressive dual meet sweep of the year came at home against Kentucky, as the women tamed a No. 20 Wildcat squad by finishing 1-2-3 in six different events, while winning eight total and posting 10 second-place finishes. The men had 10 victories and six second-place results.

Bidding Adieu

Senior Day was a memorable one for Beard, Botzum, Bova, Beth Byrum, Pete Cancila, Zac Czaplicki, Millie Campbell, Becky Horning, Tayla and Courtney Walsh as Tech swept former BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh for the first time ever at home.

BLACKSBURG, VA.

College Town, U.S.A. – A Great Place to Spend Four Years ... or a Lifetime!

One of America’s best college towns, Blacksburg is a perfect setting for a great university like Virginia Tech. Located in Southwest Virginia on a plateau between the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mountains, Blacksburg combines the laid-back lifestyle of a small town with the amenities one would expect to find around a major center of higher education. Together, the town and university have worked hard to create a progressive community that ranks among the nation’s elite living environments. Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg gained national and international attention by creating the world’s first “electronic village.” Businesses and industries have been drawn by the potential of the quaint town. Established in 1798 by John and William Black, the town is surrounded by scenic mountain views that accentuate the area. Since its founding, Blacksburg has grown to become the largest town in Virginia. The nearly 42,000 residents (including students) enjoy a close proximity to a variety of recreation areas such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail, Claytor Lake and the New River. The region features a moderate climate and four distinct seasons. Blacksburg’s location (adjacent to major interstate highways) provides convenient access to most points in the southern and eastern parts of the country. More information on Blacksburg can be found on the web site of the Blacksburg Electronic Village, www.bev.net or the town’s web site, www.blacksburg.va.us.

Assisting in the Development of the Total Person

Led by the Virginia Tech Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Hokie student-athletes volunteered countless hours in the local community last year. In addition, over 400 Virginia Tech student-athletes earned a 3.00 grade point average during one or both semesters in 2007. The accomplishments are even more amazing in the context of the 2007-2008 athletic seasons being some of the most successful in Virginia Tech history. The Virginia Tech Athletics Office of Student Life programs and services are inspired from the NCAA/CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success) Life Skills Program. The program has been previously honored for its commitment to serving the good of the student-athletes by the Division I-A Athletic Director’s Association as a Program of Excellence. The office is under the guidance of Assistant Director of Athletics for Student Life Reyna Gilbert. She is assisted by Student Services Coordinator Danny White.

Student Athlete Advisory Committee

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Two members of each sport team serve on SAAC each academic year. The leadership team during 2007-2008 was president Bryan Collier (men’s soccer), vice president Beth Walker (softball), and secretary Heather Hallberg (women’s soccer). Highlights of the 2007-2008 SAAC include the second annual toy drive competition among sports teams for the Montgomery County Christmas store, which collected over 1,400 toys (kudos to women’s soccer and football for the highest totals), a canned food drive competition collecting over 2,000 food items for the local food banks and participating in Virginia Tech’s Relay for Life. For the first time in school history, SAAC sponsored two members of Homecoming Court – Bryan Collier (men’s soccer) and Jessica Botzum (women’s swimming and diving).

Career Development

Virginia Tech student-athletes are savoring their collegiate athletic experiences with the understanding that upon graduation, they will need to secure a job. The Student Life Office worked with Becca Scott in the Virginia Tech Career Services Center to create programs designed to teach student-athletes why they are much sought after for their transferable skills (resiliency, time management, teamwork, competitiveness and ambition). Student-athletes had the opportunity to participate in an Etiquette Dinner held in January where over 80 student-athletes and coaches were in attendance. In the fall, the office also hosted its second annual Mock Interview Night with representatives from Wolseley North America, Northwestern Mutual Finance and the Virginia Tech graduate program. In addition to the mock interview night, student-athletes are offered workshops on topics such as resumé design, interview attire and job search information. Student-athletes are encouraged to participate in oncampus interviewing and eRecruiting along with securing internships and co-ops during their college careers.

quarterback turned activist, to campus in October. Hurt examined issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today’s hip-hop culture. In the past, the swimming and diving teams have also participated in a Leadership Development workshop developed by the coaches.

Academic Excellence

The Virginia Tech Athletics Office of Student Life is responsible for nominating student-athletes for academic honors and awards. Athletes are nominated for on-campus, Atlantic Coast Conference and national awards. Student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA are rewarded each semester by being honored on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. The 2007 calendar year listed 432 student-athletes with this honor. Paul LaPenna (men’s cross country) and Claire Dickey (women’s swimming and diving) received the Skelton Award for Academic Excellence in Athletics. The award is given to one male and one female student-athlete who demonstrate leadership, outstanding academic excellence and community involvement. The recipients of the award receive a $5,000 scholarship donated by Dr. Bill and Peggy Skelton.

Community Outreach

Virginia Tech student-athletes are involved more than ever in the local community. Having volunteered many hours in schools, community groups and hospitals, the student-athletes are setting a high precedent for all involved with the program. Under the “Hokies with Heart” umbrella, each sports team has a community partner with which they volunteer their time and host a home match to honor the partnership program. In 2007-2008, the Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams participated in a lunch buddy program at the Margaret Beeks Elementary School. Team members “adopted” a class in the school and joined the kids for lunch once a week. The team also helped the school with its Jump Rope for Heart event in order to raise funds for the American Heart Association. The award is given to three male and three female athletes who have shown outstanding service to Virginia Tech and the community. The other recipients were Bryan Collier (men’s soccer), Scott King (football), Jen Albrecht (volleyball) and Grant Throckmorton (football).

Personal Development

Virginia Tech student-athletes obtain personal development education through workshops and speakers. Topics covered in these presentations include appropriate campus and community conduct, media relations, sport psychology, drug and alcohol education, sports agent relations, gambling and healthy relationships. Last year, Tech also welcomed Bryon Hurst, a former college

Student-Athlete Academic Support Services Providing the Tools Needed for Success in the Classroom

Former swimmer Katie Ammons (above) is an academic counselor with Student-Athlete Academic Support Services.

The success of Virginia Tech’s swimming and diving program rests largely on the academic progress of each student-athlete. The academic performance of Tech student-athletes has improved each year due in part to the Student Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS). The Virginia Tech graduation rate for student-athletes has risen significantly in recent years and was a school-best 76 percent for 2007. This marked the fourth time in six years that Virginia Tech’s student-athlete graduation rate has been 70 percent or better. In addition to posting impressive graduation figures, current Virginia Tech student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. For the 2007 calendar year, 501 3.0 GPA’s were earned by student-athletes, student trainers, student managers, cheerleaders and HighTechs. These student-athletes and students from support areas were recognized at the Athletic Director’s Honors Breakfast last spring. Student-athletes are the most visible student component of a university. They entertain thousands of fans, students and alumni. Their athletic abilities and achievements are the primary focus for national media attention. Athletic events bring back not only faithful alumni, but are a welcome mat for potential new students. Student-athletes devote many hours to practice, conditioning and training that are not required of all students. Due to their time commitment and their high visibility, it is an obligation and in the best interest of the university to supply these students with services which will allow them to maximize their academic potential. The Virginia Tech Student Athlete Academic Support Services office is committed to providing fundamental and supplemental programming, consistent with university and NCAA policy, aimed at enhancing each studentathlete’s educational experience. Stakeholders of the office’s mission include student-athletes and their families, the university community, coaches and athletics administrators. SAASS seeks to develop relationships with its stakeholders that are founded on trust and respect, and provides the following services to accommodate their needs: • University and NCAA information • Orientation • Academic assessment

• The development of an effective student life program • Appropriate referrals • Monitored study environments • Tutorial programs • State-of-the-art technological learning assistance • Student-athlete academic performance evaluations The expectations of the Virginia Tech community are that each studentathlete achieves their maximum academic and athletic potential. With the proper assistance, facilities and encouragement, these potentials can become a reality. SAASS provides programming for student-athletes from their freshman year through graduation. This includes a comprehensive orientation to Tech, study hall, mentoring, tutoring, academic monitoring, academic recognition and eligibility education. Additionally, student-athletes are referred to and encouraged to take advantage of other campus agencies charged with helping students in their academic pursuits. During the summer of 2006, the SAASS office moved to the West Side of Lane Stadium. Here, student-athletes have access to state-of-the-art technology, quiet study facilities, individualized tutorial rooms, and direct access to the SAASS staff. This complex is the focal point for the Athletics Department, and provides a centralized place for student-athlete services. The facility features more than 18,000 square feet of functional space, 10 staff offices, 18 private tutor rooms, a state-of-the-art classroom, a 45-station computer lab, three reading/ study rooms, a conference room and a reference library. Together, these spaces provide the student-athletes with a variety of study environments conducive to their success. Athletes can use these facilities between classes, after practice or in the evenings, with flexible hours tailored to make the most of a student-athlete’s limited time. Mike Swanhart begins his first year with Student Athlete Academic Support Services as an assistant director for the swimming and diving program. Prior to joining Tech, Swanhart spent a year and a half at Florida Atlantic in a similar role. Swanhart completed his graduate degree at Barry University in sports management, and received his undergraduate degree at Rowan University in communications. Colin Howlett serves as the interim director of SAASS.

Strength & Conditioning

One of the main support centers of the Virginia Tech swimming & diving team is the strength and conditioning program. The results of hard work by the staff and the student-athletes are apparent as the Hokies prepare for their fourth season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Thanks to the direction of Assistant Athletics Director for Athletic Performance Mike Gentry, the Virginia Tech strength and conditioning program is among the best in the nation. Tech swimmers and divers train in the Jim “Bulldog” Haren Weight Room. Located in Jamerson Athletic Center, the 5,000-square foot weight room was officially dedicated in September 1985 to Haren, a former Hokie football player and long-time supporter of the Virginia Tech Athletics Department. The teams also use the state-of-the-art weight room on the lower level of the Merryman Center. With West End Market dining center is a favorite spot for Tech the two facilities, the Hokies have more than students. Virginia Tech has received national citations for 22,000-square feet of training space. best campus food.

Sports Nutrition

Eating healthy and choosing nutritious diets are important aspects of a Virginia Tech student-athlete’s life, and that’s why in July 2002, the athletics department implemented the sports nutrition program. Amy Freel serves as the director. Freel works individually with student-athletes to provide them with information they need on their diet. She also provides individual players

46

Sport Psychology

Virginia Tech offers another important service to all of its student-athletes – sport psychology. Dr. Gary Bennett coordinates the sport psychology department, which offers psychological and performance enhancement services for studentathletes. Bennett also works closely with the Cook Counseling Center. Bennett meets with student-athletes on an individual basis for personal counseling and to discuss the mental aspects of the game. He also works on team building, communication and performance enhancement. “We try to address all the various factors that affect student-athletes’ performance,” Bennett said. “We believe we can help athletes perform better by addressing those concerns.” On average, the psychologists conduct 20 individual sessions per week and meet weekly with teams as the need arises.

SPORTS MEDICINE The Sports Medicine Department at Virginia Tech is constantly evolving to incorporate new ideas utilizing state-of-the-art resources for the betterment of all Hokie student-athletes. Under the leadership of Assistant Director of Athletics for Athletic Training Mike Goforth, the department is constantly improving and developing new strategies to provide the most current and comprehensive care. Their team of certified athletic trainers, orthopaedic surgeons, Board Certified primary care physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, sport psychologists, nutritionists, massage therapists and orthotists are available on site to manage the health care needs of Tech athletes. The staff continually looks for ways to enhance the services provided for their athletes. Tech is entering its eighth full year in the 4,300-square-foot Eddie Ferrell Memorial Training Room, which consolidated the training rooms that existed in the Merryman Center and Cassell Coliseum. The facility gives the training staff a centralized area to care for the needs of all Virginia Tech student-athletes. Tech now has more than 10,000 square feet dedicated to sports medicine, placing in the top five percent nationally. The $10 million Merryman Center includes 2,400 square feet of medical space and a physician’s suite. The suite is equipped with a new, state-of-the-art X-ray system, a fluoroscopy unit and a minor procedure room. The training room also has offices for the staff, dozens of training tables, two cold tubs, whirlpools, an underwater treadmill, a Biodex System 3 and various other pieces of rehabilitation equipment and treatment modalities. After the sports medicine staff diagnoses and treats an ill or injured athlete, the staff starts collaborating with the strength and conditioning staff to provide the best injury prevention and performance enhancing programs possible.

with diet counseling on issues such as gaining lean muscle mass, losing body fat, and eating choices to improve performance. “It is extremely beneficial for our studentathletes to have nutrition education and counseling available to them in order for them to remain successful in their sports and outside of athletics,” Freel said. The sports nutritionist works with the “Training Edge,” a dining option for healthconscious students and athletes, to design menus for training tables and daily menu selections.

Providing Experienced, Professional Care

The sports medicine staff also takes great pride in treating the athletes year-round. Special attention is paid to off-season activity. During this time, the staff will analyze past injury data from each participant and construct a preventative program that is followed over a nine-week period between the end of the season and the beginning of spring practice. This same procedure is followed during the summer. If physical therapy is needed, student-athletes can be seen by physical therapist Mark Piechoski in the Ferrell Training Room. Piechoski, a certified athletic trainer, physical therapist and strength and conditioning specialist, plays a large role in the overall program developed to return an injured athlete back to 100 percent. In addition, staff sport psychologist Dr. Gary Bennett is available to all student-athletes for personal and performance issues. Team chiropractors, Dr. Greg Tilley and Dr. Dale Reynolds, provide Tech athletes with specialized treatment for spine-related conditions and play a huge role in performance enhancement through various chiropractic techniques. “Our goal is to provide the same high level of health care that professional and Olympic athletes receive,” Goforth continued. “Our usage of specialist care is modeled after the NFL system and incorporates components of the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.” Team orthopaedic surgeons Dr. Marc Siegel, Dr. Jim LeBolt and Dr. Demian Yakel bring a wealth of experience and skill to assist when athletes need orthopaedic consultation for certain types of sports-related injuries. A vital part of student-athlete medical services is access to the Montgomery Regional Hospital’s SWVA Center for Orthopaedics and Schiffert Student Health Center. Both facilities are staffed with qualified physicians and staff, and feature a wide variety of technologies designed to increase the level of care available to athletes.

By the Way … What Is a Hokie? That’s the most often-asked question in Virginia Tech athletics. The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his “Hokie” yell which still is used today. Later, when asked if “Hokie” had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention-getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics. The official school colors – Chicago maroon and burnt orange – also were introduced in 1896. They were chosen because they made a “unique combination” not worn elsewhere at the time.

The Hokie Stone Story Most of the buildings on the beautiful Tech campus are constructed using Hokie Stone. This natural rock is a 475-million-year-old dolomite limestone, some of which is mined from a quarry located not far from Cassell Coliseum. In constructing the building at Tech, a stonemason shapes individual stones, arranges them and cements them together with mortar to create walls of great strength and durability.

A Tradition of Excellence

The atlantic coast conference The Tradition

Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 56th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 109 national championships, including 57 in women’s competition and 52 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 145 times in men’s competition and 92 times in women’s action. The success of ACC swimming and diving continues to reach new heights since the league sponsored the sport for men in 1954 and for women in 1979. The 2007-08 season proved to be another storied campaign, as the league produced two NCAA individual champions and had 15 student-athletes named NCAA All-Americans along with 22 others earning All-American Honorable Mention. Miami’s Rueben Ross won the three-meter diving event at the NCAA, giving the ACC consecutive diving national champions for the first time in league history. Brittany Viola, also of Miami captured the platform diving national title for the league’s first women’s diving championship. Last year, the conference sent five schools from each of the men’s and women’s programs to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with two finishing among the Top 25 in each of their respective team standings. It also marked the fifth consecutive year the ACC has had at least five teams selected to compete in the NCAA Championships. Eight teams from the women’s ranks made NCAA last season to set a new league high. Seven men’s teams made the national postseason event for the third time in league history. ACC men’s swimming and diving have accounted for 228 NCAA AllAmericans, 16 national individual champions and one national championship relay team in the 54 years of its storied program. Six of the 12 schools have claimed an ACC championship crown with three of the schools having won 10 or more titles. NC State leads all member schools with 24 total conference championships (21 outright), while North Carolina has clinched 17 (13 outright) and Virginia captured 11. North Carolina’s Phillip Drake and NC State’s Bob Mattson became the first ACC pair to be crowned NCAA champions in 1955. Drake won the 200 butterfly, while Mattson took first place in the 200 breaststroke. There would be five more NCAA individual champions from NC State over the years, including two-time NCAA champion Dick Fadgen (200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly) in 1956 and most recently Cullen Jones, the 2006 NCAA champion in the 50 freestyle. Women’s swimming and diving have established its own standard of success over the past 29 years. Approximately 255 student-athletes have been named NCAA All-Americans and six were crowned NCAA individual champions. North Carolina has been a dominating presence in the ACC, winning 16 outright league championships (1981-86, 1991-96, 2000-02 and 2007). The Tar Heels also boast one of the best all-time swimmers in conference history. Sue Walsh won 10 national collegiate individual championships and never lost a backstroke race in her three years of NCAA competition. Clemson’s Mitzi Kremer was also a swimming sensation for the ACC, as she won both the 200 and 500 freestyle events at the NCAA in 1987 and 1989. Virginia’s Cara Lane was also an NCAA champion in two different events, winning the 1500 freestyle in 2000 and placing first place the following year in the 1650 freestyle. Countless numbers from both the ACC men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs have competed at the international level and continued on to become world champions and Olympians. Among the numerous Olympians who hailed from the league were North Carolina’s Thompson Mann and Sue Walsh as the first male and female representatives. Mann picked up a gold medal in the 1964 Olympics, while Walsh was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team.

In addition, the ACC has had several Olympic medalists including a league-best six from NC State in Steve Rerych (1968), Dan Harrigan and Steve Gregg (1976), Duncan Goodhew (1976 and 1980), David Fox (1996) and Cullen Jones (2006). North Carolina’s Mann became the first Olympic medalist for the ACC men, while Duke’s Nancy Hogshead was the conference’s first female swimmer to collect an Olympic medal. Mann helped the U.S. 400-meter relay team capture the gold medal as its leadoff swimmer in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. He also set a world record at the Tokyo Olympic Games in the 100 backstroke (59.80 seconds), becoming the first person to ever eclipse one minute at that distance. Hogshead shared the gold medal with fellow American Carrie Steinsiefer after the pair claimed a dead-heat victory in the 100 freestyle at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Calif. She was also a member of the U.S. gold-medalwinning 400-meter freestyle and 400-meter relay teams. Hogshead also won silver in the 200 individual medley. ACC swimming and diving has also excelled in the classroom, as the men’s and women’s programs have combined for 23 CSCAA Academic All-Americans and 26 others selected to an All-Academic Team by either the CSCAA, CoSIDA/ ESPN The Magazine or both national organizations. All told, the ACC boasts over 545 All-Americans, 55 NCAA individual champions, two national championship relay teams and countless numbers of Olympians.

2007-08 in Review

The 2007-08 academic year saw league teams capturing four national team titles and 12 individual NCAA crowns. In all, the ACC has won 43 national team titles over the last 12 years. The ACC has won two or more NCAA titles in 26 of the past 28 years. A total of 140 ACC teams placed in NCAA post-season competition in 2007-08. League teams compiled a 119-69 (.633) mark against nonconference opponents in NCAA championship competition. In addition, the ACC had 154 student-athletes earn first team All-America honors this past year. Overall, the league had 258 first, second or third team All-Americans. In addition, the ACC produced 10 national Players of the Year and five national Coach of the Year honorees.

From its humble beginning in 1872 with 132 students and two programs of study, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, popularly known as Virginia Tech, has evolved into a comprehensive university of national and international prominence. With about 27,500 students in Blacksburg and about 2,500 other students statewide, the university produces world-class scholarship in a challenging academic environment. University tradition is firmly rooted in our motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), and our historic land-grant mission is brought to life through learning, discovery and engagement. Virginia Tech’s eight colleges (Agriculture & Life Sciences, Architecture & Urban Studies, Engineering, Liberal Arts & Human Sciences, Natural Resources, Pamplin Business, Science and Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine) and Graduate School offer more degree programs — approximately 200 — than any other university in the state. Virginia Tech is one of the nation’s leaders in developing and using instructional technologies. More than 85 percent of departments offer e-learning courses, which have attracted more than 100,000 enrollments since 1998. During this time, more than 700 different faculty members have offered more than 3,500 different courses. For more information about Virginia Tech, visit the university’s Web site — www.vt.edu.
